Hinman had an explanation <lb />for the disparity, however. The<lb />UCR is based on seven crime<lb /><lb />more than 10,000 members in 41<lb />states; the District of Columbia;<lb />Nassau, Bahamas; and Frankfort,<lb />Germany. The national organiza-<lb />tion was founded in 1946 in<lb />Philadelphia, PA, while the area<lb />chapter, Wilson-Rocky Mount-<lb />Tarboro Chapter was chartered<lb />in 1948. Women from<lb /><lb />- Williamston, Roanoke Rapids and<lb /><lb />Greenville are also included in this<lb />chapter.<lb /><lb />The major thrust in Greenville is<lb />National Trends and Services. The<lb />goal is to sponsor activities that<lb /><lb />- will impact on economic, political,<lb /><lb />and social issues affecting the<lb />quality of our lives. The initiatives<lb />are education, legislative, and the<lb /><lb />misrepresent<lb /><lb />vated assault, motor vehicle theft,<lb /><lb />larceny and breaking and enter-<lb /><lb />ing, Hinman said. oIf we get a<lb />report of an attempted burglary, it<lb />goes in our statistics as an<lb />attempted burglary. The UCR<lb />takes that: same crime and reports<lb />it as an actual breaking and<lb />entering so as to fit it into one of<lb />those seven categories. This 1s<lb />why their rate turns out higher<lb /><lb />ours. There was another<lb />problem with the way the depart-<lb />ment was calculating the crime<lb /><lb />rate that made it appear lower. If ,<lb /><lb />for example, someone went and<lb />shot three people in a restaurant,<lb />the incident was recorded by the<lb />Greenville Police Department as<lb />one crime instead of three. The<lb />UCR would report the incident as<lb /><lb />ate crimes, Since 1998,<lb />the police department has been<lb />ot crime the same way<lb />that the UCR is by the Department<lb />of Justice, oWe play exactly by the<lb /><lb />es,<lb /><lb />crime ru Hinman said.<lb /> oWe Gort make mistakes. _<lb /><lb />, More recent events and<lb />questions about crime reporting<lb />have put Hinman on the hot seat<lb />once age Last week, as<lb />Greenville resident Kristi T Gohi<lb /><lb />- Was leaving the tennis courts at<lb /><lb />Evans<lb />wl oc dp oes<lb /><lb />. From my own van-<lb />tage point as an economist, when I<lb />think of some of the issues around<lb />globalization, I look at reigns of<lb />color and where those communi-<lb />ties are going to be ... issués of race<lb />and culture are going to be impor-<lb />tant globally. We talk about global<lb />commodities and the branding of<lb />cultures with Mc Donald Ts every-<lb />where and Eurocentric points of<lb />view dominant throughout the glo-<lb />bal economy. I think those will<lb />continue to be matters of concern.<lb /><lb />Cleaver: DuBois made his com-<lb />ment at the dawn of the 20th cen-<lb />tury, a time when most of Africa<lb />was colonized by Europeans and<lb />most people of color in North and<lb /><lb />eX ii@ih@§ M&A A|A\_A_-A_-A-:A-AG|GMAGA-AQAaQAg_li§iAg§FIg§iAg§\AgkiAQ§iAsikik hh SSAASAN SASS ASSASSINS ASANTE ASS SSS<lb /><lb />SSS<lb /><lb />mestic colonialism. But in Brazil,<lb />they don Tt even pretend to have a<lb />democracy, yet they pretend<lb /><lb />than it was<lb /><lb />Poussaint: I see a problem with<lb />the color ling, but in some ways it Ts<lb />no longer so sharply drawn. As the<lb />country contains more people of<lb />color, African Americans are still<lb /><lb />at the bottom, in a social and psy-<lb /><lb />chological way, in a hierarchy of<lb /><lb />races. That hierarchy may become .<lb /><lb />more entrenched and persist in a<lb />much more complicated way where<lb />it Ts not by color per se, but by the<lb />ethnic group with which someone<lb />identifies. That will be an ongoing<lb />problem for African Americans.<lb />There are a lot of indications that<lb />this critical issue is going to be<lb />defined for us because of our race,<lb /><lb />~ but will be buffered by socioeco-<lb /><lb />nomic status. And, some of the<lb />upper and middle-class blacks will<lb /><lb />be able to function in ways that .<lb /><lb />make them think there isn Tt a color<lb />line.<lb /><lb />Shipp: But they Tre Soften re-<lb />minded of that color line. I was<lb />recently at a conference about me-<lb />dia coverage of race and ethnicity,<lb />and one of the pieces we screened<lb />was a oDateline NBC special<lb />about Matterson, IIl., a suburb of<lb />Chicago where houses sell for hun-<lb />dreds of thousands of dollars. When<lb />blacks started moving in "these<lb />were doctors and lawyers and uni-<lb />versity professors "white people<lb />started running because the idea of<lb /><lb />20th. With the momen-<lb />tum, we T ve become more forceful<lb /><lb />in nearly every other areaas well "<lb /><lb />arts, music, politics "in a very<lb />short period of time.<lb /><lb />trrety<lb /><lb />Sani<lb /><lb />ev ee<lb /><lb />ee es<lb /><lb />eve T Ey<lb /><lb />As the century changes, so do the<lb />ideas of some young black men.<lb />Just recently, a young, highly intelligent black man<lb /><lb />_ came up with the idea that black people should not<lb /><lb />vote in the coming elections. He went even further<lb />by suggesting that all black people should align<lb />themselves behind the Rev. Jesse Jackson and elect<lb />him as president of the United States.<lb /><lb />He even went so far as to ask several people that<lb />in the event that Jackson and Vice President Al Gore<lb />were the only candidates, for whom would they vote.<lb />He was obviously saddened when he learned that<lb />most of those queried chose Al Gore.<lb /><lb />The basic premise behind his action was and is,<lb />that we should not allow white people to choose our<lb />candidates for us. As he talked on, it became appar-<lb />ent that he did not understand that nearly every<lb />major black leader we have seen emerge in recent<lb />years has been either created or endorsed by the<lb />dominant white needs.<lb /><lb />His argument was persuasive to some degree. As<lb />he talked on however, it became reasonably clear<lb />there is much he does not know about the civil rights<lb />movement, the rise of African Americans in a vari-<lb />ety of business ventures and enterprises, as well as<lb />the destruction of some of the barriers we have<lb />endured through the years. .<lb /><lb />Probably one of things that confounded him was<lb />the fact there is no such thing as a monolithic black<lb />community..We are in amalgam of the society in<lb />which we have been reared.<lb /><lb />In this context, it does not matter whether we<lb />came here as slaves. From that perspective, if we are<lb />going to be angry, then our anger should start with<lb />the Africans who first sold us to the slave traders.<lb />But the facts of the matter are simple. Nobody wants<lb />to touch that issue. It seems easier to blame the white<lb /><lb />slave traders. That is grist for another mill.<lb /><lb /> Getting back to the young man whose notions<lb />sparred th:s column. When it was suggested to him<lb />that there might be better candidates than Jackson at<lb />this point, he was confused and perhaps even taken<lb />a little aback.<lb /><lb />The name of Gen. Colin Powell was thrown out.<lb />He immediately charged that Powell is a tool and the<lb />creation of the white imperialist system. But he<lb />could not ¢oherently explain that system. It was<lb />suggested that if he believes there is a black candi-<lb />date who can win a presidential election, then per-<lb />haps he should look at the current crop of major<lb />black intellectuals. Men like Henry Louis Gates<lb />could be courted and prepared for the race.<lb /><lb />An attempt was made to make him understand<lb />that the national black community does not have the<lb />necessary numbers to elect a president. If a black<lb />candidate is to win, then it will take a collaborative<lb />effort, such as the one put forth by Jackson in 1984.<lb />when the Rainbow Coalition was founded.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the hardest point to drive home was the<lb />fact that not all black people think alike. Therefore,<lb />not all black people are looking for the same thing.<lb />Over the past three decades, we have seen a large<lb />number of former black Democrats become active<lb />black Republicans. Not to confuse the issue, we<lb />even have at least one black Libertarian in the person<lb />of talk show host Larry Elder.<lb /><lb />To go even further afield, we have the Ward<lb />Connerlys of the world. You remember him. He is<lb />the successful black man who fostered the plan to<lb />do away with affirmative action in the state of<lb />California and it is reported that he has been going<lb />around the country, trying to convince other states<lb />to put the issue on their respective ballots.<lb /><lb />Now ask yourself this question: Could Jackson<lb /><lb />represent Larry Elder or Ward Connerly? The an-<lb />swer is a true no-brainer. A resounding oNo ... but<lb />these are not the only ones to be considered. There<lb />is acoterie of black Republicans who would rather<lb />go to prison than to see Jackson in the White<lb />House.<lb /><lb />Around 1966, Dr. Ron Karenga, head of the<lb />African American Studies program at Cal State<lb />Long Beach, founder of Kwaanza as well as the<lb />founder and leader of the dormant Us Organization,<lb />made an important speech. In it, he pointed out that<lb />we might very dislike each other for a variety of<lb />reasons, but that it was important we develop what<lb />he called ° Operational Unity. <lb /><lb />We have failed to do that and as a result, there are<lb />hundreds upon hundreds of splinter groups all oVer<lb />the nation, each trying to make a mark in this convo-<lb />luted society. One wonders what would happen if<lb />they put their differences aside and came together in<lb />a unified cause.<lb /><lb />Perhaps one of the biggest problems is that the<lb />young Turks of today don Tt have aclue about the true<lb />history of African Americans in this nation. Con-<lb />versely, ask any Jewish youth about the history of<lb />Jews all over the world. They can spout it off, book,<lb />chapter and verse. Rich or poor, they have a sense of<lb />pride about their history. The answer here is simple.<lb />Too many of our young people don Tt have it.<lb /><lb />Maybe a hundred years ago, we could not see any<lb />immediately visible role models. Not so for the past<lb />50 years from 1948, when Dr. Ralph Bunche was<lb />awarded the Nobel Prize for his work with the<lb />United Nations, we have seen black men and women<lb />overcome the astronomical odds and succeed.<lb /><lb />The odist of accomplishments of blacks in the<lb />American society would take up, 10 times as much<lb />space as a available. But our children don Tt know<lb /><lb />and their parents have not taught them. ... The end<lb />result is that we have several generations who have<lb />not the slightest idea of what it takes to get from<lb />point A to point B.<lb /><lb />As bright as he is, this young man never heard of<lb />William Venold Banks, a black lawyer and lodge<lb />leader, who took a country and western radio station<lb />in Detroit and turned it into the first black-owned<lb />television station in the country. He didn Tt know that<lb />one of the network TV affiliates in Jackson Miss.<lb />was black-owned. This information came out when<lb />the young man complained about blacks not have<lb />any communications venues.<lb /><lb />Then he was informed that whatever the circum-<lb />stances, the white man cannot be blamed for this<lb />entirely. One of the main reasons there is a dearth of<lb />communications businesses in the black community<lb />can be laid. at the feet of the black people with<lb />resources who have failed to come together and<lb />create some of the things we need. There are some<lb />few, but not nearly enough.<lb /><lb />Indeed, there are many people who would vote<lb />for a Gore over a Jackson. Not because they hate<lb />blacks, but because they realize that it takes a coali-<lb />tion to elect a president and so far, we have failed to<lb />form that coalition and create that sense of opera-<lb />tional unity.<lb /><lb />Further, we have failed to educate our children<lb />about the Successes of black men and women. And<lb />we continue in the vein of 100 years ago. ...<lb /><lb />Hopefully, this young man will take the time to<lb />study the real history of blacks in this nation and<lb />understand that one day, there will probably be a<lb />black president of the United States. He will also<lb />have to understand that we cannot afford not to vote.<lb />Too many lives have been given or taken for us to<lb />take voting lightly.<lb /><lb />Re tae<lb /><lb />BETWEEN THE LINES |<lb /><lb />Tt is ironic that the<lb />last part of this se-<lb />res runs the first week of the 21st<lb />century. the 19th century freedom<lb />Key to our freedom may very well<lb />open the lock to a 21st century<lb />dilemma; how do blacks in America<lb />find their way back home (to a<lb />culturally centered, economically<lb />independent existence). God makes<lb />all things new (if we allow him).<lb />Blacks, by and large, have a habit<lb />of throwing out the old, forsaking<lb />itfor owhat is new. But hidden in<lb /><lb />ose oold things are the sectets to<lb />/ life, Understanding the past<lb />- Riplps us not repeat it.<lb /><lb />Right metre if yowread the news<lb />a rature of acentury ago, 2000<lb />easly could be 1900 from a<lb />construct perspective. The<lb />rs that helped our recent ances-<lb />Ve escape slavery less than 150<lb /><lb />s av eaieliy, closed on them<lb />years: later, just. as the<lb /><lb />fought, and reel for freedom. In<lb />some cases, as the case with many<lb />of our youth and young profes-<lb />sionals, we never knew how we got<lb />over because it wasn Tt passed<lb />down. What has since been discov-<lb />ered in the. resurgence of the un-<lb />derground railroad sites is that the<lb />map is still there and the keys are<lb />still in evidence that social coop-<lb />eration can bring about social jus-<lb />tice. Escaping from slavery was<lb />about social justice for us. It may<lb />have been about economic justice<lb />for those who cooperated, but in<lb />the end social justice prevailed and<lb />economic justice become wide-<lb />spread (even for the runways).<lb />The question now becomes,<lb /> oHow do we get future generations<lb />to pick up the key that holds the<lb />past but also opens the door to their<lb />future freedoms? How do we<lb />change the mindsets of young pro-<lb />fessionals, many of whom take for<lb /><lb />i granted their access in certain<lb /><lb />industry: -and privilege,<lb />y ogot there on their<lb />The; mistake talent<lb /><lb />the chance to use it. Freedom had to be<lb />taken, whether it was in 1860 or<lb />1960.<lb /><lb />Each time, the key was left in.<lb /><lb />the door "the key being oour his-<lb />tory, our struggle for freedom and<lb />our desire to be free. Freedom is<lb />now a metaphor since restrictive<lb />law has been abolished. But free-<lb />dom never was about owhere you<lb />could or couldn't go. Freedom<lb />was owhat you could do or what<lb />you could be, given the desire<lb />(not éven the opportunity), Most<lb />of our youth (and adults) wouldn't<lb />be able to find their way to free-<lb />dom if somebody left the door open<lb />(which they our recent ancestors)<lb />did}.<lb /><lb />Po a9 railroad tours can<lb />ee pa the cons<lb /><lb />and museum sites can take our<lb />people to the places where our an-<lb />cestors walked and hid and settled<lb />to make a way for them who now<lb />know little about the sacrifice that<lb />was made Ton their behalf. All were called. but only<lb />five were chosen and went in to<lb />the marriage, but the point I am<lb />getting to derives from verse 5;<lb />Having a form of godliness, but<lb />denying the power therefor:<lb />from such turn away. The Word<lb />clearly tells us to get away from a<lb />church, a body of believers, a<lb />fellowship, or whatever you prefer<lb />to call. it, that has a form of<lb />godliness but denies the power.<lb />The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to<lb />tell Timothy to turn away, get<lb />away from it.<lb /><lb />I know of many people that have<lb />practically lived in the church, so<lb />to speak. They have been going to<lb />church for 10, 20 & 30 years or<lb />more. They should be spiritual<lb />giants, seasoned saints in the Word<lb />and in Christ, but when God<lb />allows them to be tested with<lb /><lb />what He can do when everything<lb />is going well, but will you be able<lb />to talk of His goodness and what<lb />He can do when testing time<lb />comes? When things like this<lb />happen it denotes one thing, you<lb />can hear the Word and it never<lb />becomes a part of you. If it is never<lb />quickened or joined to your spirit,<lb />it is unsuccessful. The Word is not<lb />for reading only. It is supposed to<lb />become a part of us and eventually<lb />overtake us. Even though there were no other Black funeral homes in Pitt County at the<lb /> time, Walter still ran into opposition, primarily because Black residents were<lb /> ging serviced by local White funeral homes.
