They stood up for what they<lb />thought was right and there was<lb />no such thing at that time for a<lb />black man.<lb /><lb />They just stuck to their faith,<lb />believed and refused to go back.<lb />Now his granchildren and great<lb />grandchildren can read about him<lb />in the history books and know that<lb />he did not back down. ?<lb /><lb />After his accident. Mayfield<lb />found he could still sing by lying<lb />down, letting gravity put pressure<lb />on his chest and lungs. With<lb />vocals sometimes recorded lines<lb />at a time, Mayfield released his<lb />final album, * New World Order. ?<lb />in 1996.<lb /><lb />Mayfield was a two-time induc-<lb />tee to the Rock and Roll Hall of<lb />Fame---as a member of the<lb />Impressions, and as a solo artist.<lb />Though his songs often invoked<lb />bleak surroundings, they never<lb />lost sight of hope. oLike a true<lb />nonviolent civil rights activist,<lb />Mayfield looked for the best in<lb />anatagonists as well as friends,<lb />gently prodding for change and<lb />rarely pointing an accusatory fin-<lb />ger in anger, ocritic George<lb />wrote in his 1988 book, o The<lb />Death of Rhythm and_ blues. ?<lb /> oThere waws dignity in his ap-<lb />proach, a feeling that his ideals<lb />were for the elevation of his<lb />listeners. o<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />Baca<lb /><lb />Happy Bit bay Dr.<lb />- We Salute.<lb /><lb />King<lb /><lb />ie pricr to ? One of them has resulted in.<lb /><lb />adeath, with at least one other send-<lb />ing a young girl to the hospital with<lb />a severe knife wound. These are all<lb />major problems, which must be<lb />handled forthwith.<lb /><lb />In each of these cases, racial<lb /><lb />to be determined by courts of law or<lb /><lb />_| by whatever means necessary.<lb /><lb />Meanwhile, we need to take a<lb /><lb /> I closer look at the children we are<lb /><lb />rearing and ask ourselves if we are<lb />preparing them to deal with a world<lb />that is both hostile and friendly.<lb /> Some of the barriers have fallen.<lb />Some others have not. It is impor-<lb />tant that we teach our children to<lb />know the difference, and how to<lb />deal with either or both sets of cir-<lb /><lb />| cumstances.<lb /><lb />Of equal importance in this equa-<lb />tion is the role of the adult, i.e. the<lb />parent, grandparent, et al. Some-<lb /><lb />| where along the way, as we at-<lb /><lb />tempted to throw off the yoke of<lb />oppression, we failed to reinstitute<lb />something called respect. Such ac-<lb />tion has resulted in an almost-total<lb />breakdown of our society.<lb /><lb />In the oolden days, ? African<lb />Americans said oYes Sir, No Sir,<lb /><lb />sablishes ae<lb />of The Sentinel, used tokid me alot<lb />} about looking into the past. But he<lb />-1 also understood that the road to the<lb />| future lies within the problems over-<lb /><lb />- Jorma ofiegen Soap one th on<lb />vein, they said the same thing to.<lb />- the school and the teachers for the<lb />dance to most African culture, older<lb />» people are venerated. They are re-<lb /> T vered and they are respected.<lb /><lb />their parents and elders. In accor-<lb /><lb />-. When the concept of integration<lb />became the law of the land and the<lb />oppressive bonds wete thrown off,<lb /><lb />we began to think that because we<lb />~ no longer said oSir ? and oMa'am ?<lb /><lb />to white people, we no longer<lb />needed to show respect to our own<lb />elders.<lb /><lb />What a sad mistake that | was.<lb />The concept of respect to our elders<lb />had not come out of fear, as it-had<lb />with white people. It had come from<lb />an African tradition of genuine re-<lb />spect. We lost it. We have not found<lb />it yet and our children are running<lb />rampant through the communities.<lb /><lb />It Ts cold but it Ts real. In our com-<lb />munity, the culprits don Tt speak<lb />Spanish. They don Tt have foreign<lb />accents. As a matter of fact, some of<lb />them can barely speak English be-<lb />cause they only thought they only<lb />needed to go to school long enough<lb />to learn to sign their names. And<lb />some of them are illegible.<lb /><lb />The problem is that we don Tt<lb />stand behind the schools and the<lb />teachers. When a teacher sends a<lb />note home to a parent, like as not,<lb />the parent goes to his or her local<lb />armory, checks out an AK47 and<lb />then goes to school with killing the<lb />teacher in mind. Still, Johnny can Tt<lb />read, write or decipher.<lb /><lb />Johnny and Jennie go to school<lb />with the notion of telling the teacher<lb />where he or she can go and the<lb /><lb />astray<lb />We cannot continue to thew<lb /><lb />failure of our kids. These teachers:<lb />don Tt teach our children to rob and<lb /><lb />- steal. They don't provide gun-han-<lb /> dling classes. These are things<lb />learned outside the classroom, and<lb /><lb />in some cases, condoned by the<lb />parents. There have been: several<lb />incidents where parents have bought<lb />weapons and given them to their<lb />children,<lb />- .Nobody wants to accept the<lb />blame for the lack of respect, the<lb />failure to learn and the unwilling-<lb />ness to be corrected on the part of<lb />our children, Every parent in the<lb />world, soto speak, will say, oI know<lb />my child and I know he/she would<lb />not do anything wrong.. ?<lb /><lb />When the wrong occurs, the par-<lb />ent is quick to explain they learned<lb /><lb />it from the television or from a<lb /><lb />neighbor's son. It simply was not<lb />the fault of the child or the parent.<lb />Horse Manure!<lb /><lb />It is too easy to cast the blame "<lb /><lb />off on someone else. The onus be-<lb />longs on the shoulders of the par-<lb />ents in most cases. In some cases, it<lb />is not the parents T fault and this<lb />statement alone will give all par-<lb />ents an out. They will be quick to<lb />grab onto this little blurb and say,<lb /> oWell, at least he Ts not talking about<lb />me. ?<lb /><lb />Wrong! In most cases, you are<lb />exactly the one I Tm talking about.<lb />To misquote the Bard, oMethinks<lb />thou doth protest too much. ?<lb /><lb />- Maybe nobody else wants to deal<lb />with it. But something has got to be<lb /><lb />pid.) 2)<lb />Somewhere along the way, we<lb />have got to wake up and understand<lb />that we have in fact bred a genera-<lb /><lb />tion of vipers (with apologies to<lb /><lb />Philip Wylie.) and now they have<lb /><lb />begun to bite us. this ain Tt about<lb />race. This is about survival. We<lb />have turned deaf ears to the prob-<lb />lem, claiming this was the white<lb />man Ts influence or his problem. He<lb />does not live in our community for<lb />the most part. He does not come<lb />into our community and break into<lb />our homes. He does not rob the<lb />mom and pop stores on the corners.<lb />These are our kids and we are look-<lb />ing for every kind of excuse in the<lb />world to excuse them. It just doesn Tt<lb />wash and it is about time that we<lb />stopped trying to fool ourselves into<lb />believing the problems we have are<lb />somebody else Ts fault.<lb /><lb />When we stopped teaching our<lb />children respect, we turned the cor-<lb />ner onto a one-way street. There is<lb />a brick wall at the end of that street.<lb /><lb />Perhaps it is too late for some of<lb /><lb />a ee e.<lb />next door poenetning,. a stu-<lb /><lb />the youngsters. It is not, however too |<lb /><lb />late for all of them. Let us look at the<lb />African traditions we have been<lb />given and if nothing else, follow the<lb />ones that are there in front of us.<lb />We must be able to look to the<lb />past in order to forge ahead for the<lb />future. After all, we have been com-<lb />plaining that this nation took our<lb />history from us. Well, there are some<lb />things they have not taken from us<lb />and we would do well to look at the<lb />past and see what lies ahead for us.<lb /><lb />co<lb /><lb />URBAN PERSPECTIVE<lb />Violence Prevention: Focus on Youth<lb /><lb />i?<lb /><lb />The California Wellness<lb />Foundation recently held its<lb />seventh annual Violence Prevention Initia-<lb />tive Conference in Los Angeles. Violence is a<lb />serious public health problem and arguably,<lb />violence prevention should be this nation Ts<lb />top priority. Violence mirrors the direction<lb />and quality of life for youth, It also reflects<lb />the social justice and public policy Priorities<lb />of America.<lb /><lb />Gun viclence is a public health epidemic<lb />and the leading cause of death for California Ts<lb />young people. The annual conference pro-<lb />vides an opportunity for all Violence Preven-<lb />tion Initiative participants to convene and<lb />strengthen the statewide network of advocates.<lb />The intention is to transform public discourse,<lb />inform policy development and create new<lb />community strategies for prevention.<lb /><lb />The VPI has several dimensions, one of<lb />which is a media or public information com-<lb />ponent. This provides background informa-<lb />tion which better enables participants and the<lb />general public to understand the complexities<lb />and challenges of violence prevention.<lb /><lb />Violence among America Ts youth remains<lb />at historically high levels, and both offenders<lb />and victims are getting younger each year.<lb />Youth are the most frequent victims of vio-<lb />lence nationwide, with teenagers at least twice<lb />as likely as adults to become the victims of<lb />some sort of physical assault. Every day, 13<lb />children under the age of 20 are murdered.<lb />Although there has been a 30 percent decline<lb />in juvenile homicides since 1994, homicides<lb />account for 20 percent of all deaths of the 10-<lb /><lb />' 24 age group and is one of the leading causes<lb /><lb />of death for this group. On an optimistic note,<lb />national statistics show violent crime arrests<lb />fell 4 percent in 1995 for juveniles 17 and<lb />under, the first drop since 1987. Teenagers T<lb /><lb />_ perception of violence or crime as the biggest<lb /><lb />problem facing their generation has also de-<lb />clined from 22 percent in 1994 to 7 percent in<lb />1998. But despite violence prevention pro-<lb />grams and declines in rates of youth violence,<lb />juvenile-related crime continues to take its<lb />toll.<lb /><lb />Once considered sanctuaries of safety and<lb />learning, American schools today are often<lb />perceived as dangerous places. With the re-<lb />cent media frenzy surrounding school<lb />shootings, the public has been inundated by<lb />images of children shooting classmates and<lb />teachers, leading to the belief that school-<lb />related violence is surging. Heightened con-<lb />cerns and exacerbated fears about school safety<lb />have also resulted in public policy initiatives.<lb />Statistics show, however, that the perceived<lb /> otrend ? in school violence may be more a<lb />media phenomenon of linking together sensa-<lb />tionalistic incidents than a pervasive problem.<lb /><lb />Of course, this is not to say that America Ts<lb />youth face no threats to their safety. Guns have<lb />killed children in America 12 tinfes as often as<lb />they have killed children in other industrial-<lb />ized countries. The real dangers are not so<lb />much in schools, but away from them, as 99<lb />percent of children Ts deaths occur outside of<lb />schools. Tragically, 11 American children are<lb />killed every two days by their parents or care-<lb />takers.<lb /><lb />Resources for Youth i is a public education<lb />campaign funded by the California Wellness<lb />Foundation which seeks to provide California Ts<lb />leaders and decision-makers with tools and in-<lb />formation to help promote increased public and<lb />private investment in violence prevention ef-<lb />forts and policies that reduce firearm injuries<lb />and deaths. RFY is acomponent of the ten-year,<lb />comprehensive Violence Prevention Initiative.<lb />(The VPI has three primary goals: change the<lb />view that violence is inevitable, stimulate and<lb />support innovative programs, and give Califor-<lb /><lb />nians a direction for dealing creatively with<lb />violence prevention.) RFY has developed a<lb />database of more than 15,000 opinion leaders<lb />and broad-based support from the grassroots as<lb />well as professional communities.<lb /><lb />The seventh annual Violence Prevention<lb />Conference offered speakers and a wide range<lb />of workshops and discussion sessions. These<lb />include Seizing Political Opportunities, Iden-<lb />tifying Allies and Making It Happen "by the<lb />end of this session, participants had the oppor-<lb />tunity to share experiences that have helped<lb />community-based organizations strategically<lb />position themselves in the political structure<lb />of their communities. Adolescent Violence: A<lb />Practical Perspective "Case Studies "by the<lb />end of this session, it was intended that par-<lb />ticipants be able to assess and/or identify risk<lb />factors associated with youth violence. Par-<lb />ticipants were to develop a management plan<lb />for an identified at-risk youth. Talking Out<lb />Loud About Juvenile Justice "by the end of<lb />this session, participants were to be better able<lb />to frame public health arguments about juve-<lb />nile justice. Fostering Youth Leadership "by<lb />the end of this session, participants should<lb />have had a good understanding of the knowl-<lb />edge of the ingredients for developing effec-<lb />tive youth leadership programs.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the most innovative and signifi-<lb />cant thing about the VPI conference is its<lb />strong focus on youth, both as leaders and<lb />participants. A future column will summarize<lb />the results of the seventh annual Violence<lb />Prevention Initiative Conference, which will<lb />likely be interesting and have important prac-<lb />tical implications.<lb /><lb />A personal note: One of the Wellness<lb />Foundation Ts 1999 Peace Prize recipients is<lb />Los Angeles T Ruben Lizardo, who works hard<lb />to better other communities as well as his<lb />own "a rare, invaluable trait. For those<lb />who have the good fortune of<lb />never having .to have been a part<lb />~ of this ever growing population, it<lb />is quite easy to stereotype and<lb />dismiss the homeless community<lb />as not only "homeless" but also<lb />"helpless". We would wish only to<lb />get on with our lives and not think<lb />of "those other people."<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, "those other<lb />people" actually exist, not only in<lb />society at large, but at an increas-<lb />ing rate here in the City of<lb />Raleigh. It is estimated on a given<lb />night that there are well over 2000<lb />homeless persons in our City. And<lb />while there is an alarming truth to<lb />the myths of drug use and abuse<lb />which are reported from the<lb />homeless community, there are<lb />untold realities which require our<lb />concern, attention and assistance<lb />as well<lb /><lb />In the City operated homeless<lb />shelter at 1420 S. Wilmington<lb />Street, between 250-330 men and<lb /><lb />women reside at the shelter on a<lb />given night. More than 43% have<lb />a medical condition or disability.<lb />80% or greater suffer from some<lb />form of substance abuse. An even<lb />greater percentage of the residents<lb />in the city-run homeless facility<lb />suffer unresolved emotional or<lb />physical abuse issues.<lb /><lb />Of the female residents, at least<lb />40-60% are victims of domestic<lb />violence, such violence oftentimes<lb />continuing during their stay at the<lb />shelter.<lb /><lb />While these statistics are stagger-<lb />ing, none of the problems are<lb />insurmountable and there is hope.<lb /><lb />More than 60% of the females<lb />and 80% of the males are regu-<lb />larly employed, either by an<lb />outside employer or through day<lb />labor services. Lack of money<lb />management skills, a failure to<lb />understand and utilize spending<lb />priorities and or bad credit histo-<lb />ries render home ownership of<lb />apartment renting unlikely without<lb />outside intervention.<lb /><lb />Assistance in the form of services<lb />is absolutely necessary to reverse<lb />the trend of homelessness in our<lb />locality and this factor cannot be<lb />overstated. Even more, however,<lb />in our encounters with the home-<lb />less, we must be vigilant in<lb />establishing proper boundaries,<lb /><lb />promoting self esteem, assisting in<lb />goal setting and maintaining<lb /><lb />a positive focus, wherever we can,<lb />however we can.<lb /><lb />The City's support in seeking<lb />homeless persons to employ dur-<lb />ing the Special Olympics created<lb />overwhelming enthusiasm at the<lb />Shelter and is but one example of<lb />how positive efforts by the City<lb />can be utilized to build positive<lb />self worth. .<lb /><lb />Teaching respect and dignity<lb />through example is equally as<lb />valuable, especially when we con-<lb />sider that many in the homeless<lb />community have never experi-<lb />enced a values system in their<lb />lives. This lacking need, unfortu-<lb />nately can be a breeding ground<lb />for anger, violence and abuse.<lb />Aiding those in need can have a<lb />tremendous positive impact on<lb />society, on the homeless commu-<lb />nity and on self. The best part of<lb />making a compassionate contribu-<lb />tion to those who have reached<lb />great levels of hopelessness and<lb />despair is that the only tool needed<lb />is the humanness of a_ beating<lb />heart. And, we all have one of<lb />those. .<lb /><lb />*The statistics used in this article are<lb />based on observation and staff estimates<lb /><lb />What is soul?<lb /><lb />Soul is the image of Billie Holiday,<lb /><lb />eyes closed, singing the blues.<lb /><lb />Sout is the image of hands raised,<lb /><lb />joined in a gesture of unity.<lb /><lb />Sou! is the image of Dr. Carter G. But it has one of the smallest num-<lb />bers of refugees admitted to the United<lb />States each year.. -<lb /><lb />The numbers are startling. For fiscal year<lb />(FY) 2000 there is a ceiling of 18,000 Afri-<lb />can refugees. For Asia and the Near East<lb />the ceiling is: 16,000. For Europe, the ceil-<lb />ing is 47,000.<lb /><lb />These disparities are highlighted by a<lb /><lb />~ Dec. | State Department ruling that termi-<lb /><lb />nated refugee family reunions for six Afri-<lb />can countries while leaving the reunions<lb />open indefinitely for European countries.<lb />Poo counties include Cameroon, Chad,<lb /><lb />jibouti, Liberia, Nigeria, Somalia and<lb />Uganda.<lb /><lb /> oYes, in general, there 1s a disparity.<lb />Fewer Africans are allowed in compared<lb />with Europe, Asia and the former Soviet<lb />Union ?, said Mwiza Munthali, information<lb />specialist for the Washington-based<lb />TransAfrica.<lb /><lb />It would be easy to just call the disparity<lb />another form of racism. The State Department<lb />has been able to carry out this policy be-<lb />cause the Americans don Tt have refugees<lb />as a day-to-day issue ?, said Mr. Krua.<lb /><lb />Whatever the reason for the exclusion<lb /><lb />of African immigrants, the facts still remain<lb />that Africans are getting the short end of<lb />the stick when it comes to refugee admis-<lb />sion. They were infected with<lb />a Marburg virus from African green<lb />monkeys. The virus didn Tt phase the<lb />monkeys; it killed those workers.<lb /><lb />This column is based on his<lb />findings.<lb /><lb />According to the author,<lb />the testing was done by a US.<lb />firm, Wistar Institute, with<lb />two Belgium firms joining<lb />them later. Of the 28 cases of<lb />AIDS in specified towns in<lb />Africa through 1980, 23 of<lb />those cases came from the<lb />same towns in which oral test-<lb />ing of a polio vaccine was un-<lb />-dertaken, or at least within<lb />175 miles of those locations.<lb /><lb />Testing of the oral vaccine<lb />was also done in Sweden and<lb />at a women Ts prison in New<lb />Jersey. No early AIDS cases<lb />occurred in Poland and Swe-<lb />deh and no early documented<lb />cases occurred here.<lb /><lb />But, in 1973 a New Jersey<lb />teenager had a baby who was<lb /> born with HIV. Is it linked to<lb />those tests? Scientists gener-<lb />ally agree that the ancestors<lb />for AIDS viruses were in the<lb />simian population. HIV-1, the<lb />virus that is most prevalent,<lb />derives from an immunodefi-<lb />ciency virus of chimpanzees:<lb />HIV-2 is most likely aN im-<lb />munodeficiency virus from<lb />the sooty mangabey monkey.<lb /><lb />Only a very small percent<lb />of simians have the immuno-<lb />deficiency virus. However,<lb />whether a small percent or a<lb />large percent have the virus is<lb />of no concern if it can Tt make<lb />that jump from a chimp or<lb />monkey to us.<lb /><lb />The real question is, how<lb />does the HIV virus make that<lb />jump? Since man and chimps<lb /><lb />chimps were being killed for<lb />a meal or two.<lb /><lb />However, the natives in the<lb />Congo basin and many other<lb />places have been eating<lb />chimps and monkeys and hav-<lb />ing inadvertent blood to blood<lb />transfers for centuries "and<lb />AIDS was unheard of.<lb /><lb />The book, oThe River, ?<lb />points to oral polio vaccine<lb />batches contaminated with<lb />chimpanzee AIDS virus as the<lb />change agent for that chimp<lb />to man jump. Supposedly, that<lb />couldn Tt happen because po-<lb />lio vaccine is made with cells<lb />from monkeys, not chimps.<lb /><lb />However, the author, Ed-<lb />ward Hooper, points out that a<lb />large colony of chimpanzees<lb />were in the area where the pri-<lb />mates were caught for oral<lb />vaccineexperiments. It is quite<lb />likely that some chimps were<lb />caught in the simian drag net<lb />for experimental subjects and<lb />their cells were used to make<lb />some batches of vaccine.<lb /><lb />And if they were, since the<lb />immunodeficiency virus is<lb />rare among the chimps, only<lb />a few random batches of the<lb />experimental oral polio vac-<lb />cine would have that virus.<lb />Then, only in certain places<lb />where the contaminated<lb />batches were given would the<lb />first HIV viruses show up.<lb />That happened.<lb /><lb />There have been cases of<lb />simian viruses jumping from<lb />monkey to man via polio vac-<lb />cine. In the SOs and early 60s,<lb /><lb />Teenage boys who attended boot<lb /><lb />be moved to another secure juvenile fa-<lb /><lb />the camps was sparked by newspaper ar-<lb />ticles that said boys in at least one camp<lb />were regularly abused. All of the boys<lb />were from Baltimore and some 200<lb />youths "convicted of various crimes,<lb />except murder "attend the camp each<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Polls: Blacks, whites believe<lb />cops use racial profiling<lb /><lb />A new Gallup poll found a majority<lb />of Americans, across racial lines, believes<lb />racial profiling happens all the time<lb />across the country. Three out of four<lb />young Black males polled said they had<lb />been pulled over just because of their<lb />race. Poll participants were asked what<lb />they thought about reports that motor-<lb />ists in certain racial and ethnic groups<lb />were stapped by cops because they were<lb />thought to be more likely to commit<lb />crimes.<lb /><lb />In addition, the poll found four of 10<lb />Blacks, across age and gender lines, said<lb />they believe they have been stopped by<lb />police because of their race. The tele-<lb />phone poll, which included 2,006 respon-<lb />dents (including 1,001 Blacks) was con-<lb />ducted from Sept. 24 to Nov. 16 and has<lb />an error margin of plus or minus 4 per-<lb />centage points, was part of the annual<lb />Gallup audit of Black-white relations.
