<lb />Serving Eastern North Carolina Since 1981<lb /><lb />Can Residents resurrect a Historic Bla<lb /><lb />By Eric Ture Muhammad<lb /><lb />Princevillle - Ravaged in mid-<lb />September by floodwaters that<lb />rose 48 feet over a period of four<lb />to eight days, residents of<lb />Princeville are returning to what<lb />is left of their town to rebuild<lb />lives and return others to rest.<lb />Across the street from a road<lb />marker that identifies Highway<lb />64, just a few hindred feet from<lb />the remnants of the Town Hall,<lb />stands a National Historical<lb />Society plaque that reads,<lb /> oFreedom Hill - Community es-<lb />tablished here by freed blacks in<lb />1865. Incorporated as Princeville<lb />in 1885." Today. 110 years since<lb />its incorporation, new markers in<lb />recent days have become more<lb />prominent than the historical<lb />plaque.<lb />Small fluorescent flags affixed to<lb />thin wire rods mark the open<lb />graves of Blacks in Princeville,<lb />Greenwood. Wilson and Dancy<lb /><lb />cemeteries. At a pace of 16 per<lb />day, remains of town residents are<lb />replanted in the cities T four<lb />adjacent graveyards after the<lb />floodwaters of Hurricane Floyd<lb />unearthed them, sending 224 cas-<lb />kets on a wild water ride along the<lb />Carolina coast. Public health<lb />officials, Red Cross teams and the<lb />Federal Emergency Management<lb />Agency (FEMA) supervised the<lb />burials while other unit members<lb />train to take over the reburial<lb />process.<lb /><lb />One of the markers belongs to<lb />Braswell Moses in the Princeville<lb />Cemetery. He was among the<lb /> ofloaters. ? as they were some-<lb />iimes called. Along the bottom of<lb />the dug-out grave lay the leg bone<lb />of Moses. waiting to be rejoined<lb />with the sum of his parts. oFirst<lb />an archeologist comes to collect<lb />bone fragments that are found at<lb />the graves. He then matches them<lb />to remains already examined.<lb />Once the match is made, he then<lb />flags the grave with the appropri-<lb />ate marker signifying the match. ?<lb />said a professional gravedigger<lb />whose company from Redding.<lb />Pa.. was contracted by federal<lb />officials to handle the reburial of<lb />the flooded coffins.<lb /><lb />Even more noticeable are the<lb />bright *X ? marks spray painted on<lb />practically every home and com-<lb />mercial building in the area.<lb /><lb />Where the markings once signi-<lb />fied rescue efforts, it is now<lb />rumored that it is part of an<lb />elaborate scheme by government<lb />agencies to buy out the town.<lb /> oThe X marks was an indicated<lb />for the rescue people. It told them<lb />that residents cleared the homes<lb /><lb />and that it had already been.<lb /><lb />searched for people who may<lb />have been trapped inside, ? said<lb />Kim Burwell, a crisis assistant to<lb />the city Ts mayor, Delia Perkins.<lb />Many residents now say that the<lb />marks indicate which homes will<lb />be torn down because of FEMA Ts<lb />buyout proposal. The proposal<lb />offers residents fair-market value<lb />for their property. oIt will belong<lb />to the Federal government and<lb />you will never be able to buy it<lb />back, ? said Burwell. So far the<lb />town has resisted the offer, which<lb />Perkins insists has to approved by<lb />the city Ts governing board, and<lb />that comes only after there is<lb />majority consent from the city Ts<lb /><lb />residents.<lb /><lb />Another pressure has been the<lb />Small Business Administration's<lb />(SBA) grant assistanceprogram.<lb /> o| believe it offers $16,500 per<lb />qualified family, but the average<lb /><lb />approval has been only for<lb />$4,000. You can Tt rebuild a<lb />kitchen for that. ? exclaimed<lb />Burwell. oThe other thing that<lb /><lb />people need to know is that this is<lb />not ready money. At the closing,<lb />you will pay any federal debts<lb />owed, taxes. your existing house<lb />note and you still will have to<lb />wait on the money. Hurricane<lb />Fran came years ago and the<lb />people of Raleigh, N.C.. are still<lb />waiting for the money they agreed<lb />to under the program. ?<lb /><lb />The near 2,000 residents have<lb />been moved to a government<lb />trailer park that residents angrily<lb />refer to as oFEMA-ville. ? Some<lb />trailers house as many as eight<lb />people with one bathroom, sofa<lb />and two bunk beds. FEMA said<lb />residents would be allowed to<lb />remain there for 18 months until<lb />housing is provided or an author-<lb />ized return to their homes is<lb />granted. Those living in FEMA-<lb />ville are expected to repay the<lb />government for their temporary<lb />housing once relocated.<lb /><lb /> oThey want the properties, there<lb />is no doubt about it, ? said<lb />homeowner Tim _ Bridgers.<lb /><lb />November 1,1999 - November 12, 1999<lb /><lb />Bridgers and his wife were the<lb />first to return to their home, but<lb />they first had to outsmart the<lb />National Guard. oThey were<lb />everywhere. We had to drive 80<lb />miles around the city, rent a<lb />paddleboat and row our way in<lb />heavy water currents back to the<lb />country. It [currents] destroyed the<lb />boat, but we got to our house, ? he<lb />said.<lb /><lb />The homes in Princeville are not<lb />elaborately built. They are mod-<lb />est, mostly wood-framed bunga-<lb />lows laced along sandy, tree-lined<lb />and semi-paved streets.<lb />Unemployment had always been<lb />high and incomes low. Now those<lb />homes, many barely standing. are<lb />caked in mud and debris. Many<lb />of the homes are beyond repair.<lb /> oThis town belongs to the<lb />grandchildren and great-<lb />grandchildred of slaves. We are<lb />too proud of our heritage to let<lb />our town die. ? stated Perkins in an<lb /><lb />interview.<lb /><lb /> oWhy should they pay? ? asked<lb />Bridgers. oThe state added on<lb />Highway 64 and created a funnel.<lb />When the dike broke in Raleigh,<lb />that forced the water down to<lb />Rocky Mount. When the pressure<lb />got too great for Rocky Mount,<lb />they opened their dam and the<lb />water filled Princeville like a<lb />bucket. None of us found out<lb />about the water coming until 3:30<lb />that morning when the Army and<lb />sheriffs were knocking on our<lb />doors telling us we had to leave. ?<lb /><lb /> oThis was nothing but a big<lb />swamp full of mosquitoes and<lb />snakes. ? said Princeville resident<lb />and former Mayor Glenny<lb />Mathewson. oOthers, he said,<lb />mainly Turner Prince, stayed and<lb /> ofought the snakes, mosquitoes<lb />and everything else. No one<lb />wanted to live there but us. ? he<lb />concluded.<lb /><lb />States estimates of highway and<lb />road damage have reached $80<lb />billion and are cllimbing. Former<lb />presidential candidate and native<lb />of North Carolina, Elizabeth<lb />Dole, recently wrote Pres. Bill<lb />Clinton demanding immediate as-<lb />sistance for the state. Princeville<lb />was the hardest his according to<lb />all surveyors. The Clinton ad-<lb />ministration has voiced concerns<lb />for the state and visited<lb /><lb />ATTENTION MEN IT'S RETREAT TIME AGAIN!<lb /><lb />Reggie Price, WOOW Ts radio<lb />personality for the mid-day and<lb />drive time gospel music mix party<lb />is inviting men from all over the<lb />city and surrounding areas to join<lb />him and the Philippi Church of<lb />Christ men for an exciting Men Ts<lb />retreat. <lb />e White People T s Party T<lb /><lb />~ oDemocrats remade themselves as the black people Ts party. ?<lb /><lb />- oGuppoue forsee Speaker of che House Newt Gingrich said that. What<lb />would happen? Before you could say, oJesse Jackson Ts next press<lb /><lb />conference, ? Gingrich would deny the remark, say he was misquoted,<lb />say it was taken out of context, before finally apologizing.<lb /><lb />Well, a national leader did make a similar remark, NAACP<lb />chairman Julian Bond, in a recent speech, said, oRepublicans re-<lb />made themselves as the white people Ts party. ?<lb /><lb />Yet in a typical national election, the owhite vote ? splits fairly<lb />evenly between Democrat and Republican. Minorities and single<lb />women tip the scales. As a percentage, far more whites vote-Demo-<lb />crat than blacks vote Republican. Blacks show more loyalty to a<lb />party "in this case, Democratic "than does any group in America.<lb />Clinton Ts job approval rate among blacks hovers around 90 percent.<lb />So, the hypothetical Newt Gingrich remark, calling the Democratic<lb />Party the oblack people Ts party, ? would have been far more accurate<lb />than Julian Bond Ts remark about Republicans and white people. Oh,<lb />well.<lb /><lb />But there Ts more. Bond gave a ringing defense of affirmative<lb />action, stating that o...affirmative acti6n made the black middle<lb />class .... affirmative action helped a third of all blacks. ? Really. In<lb />their book, America in Black and White, Stephan and Abigail<lb />Thernstrom show that the black middle class existed and grew well<lb /><lb />_ before affirmative action. Moreover, they point out that affirmative<lb />action did not accelerate the growth of the black middle class.<lb /><lb />And economist Thomas Sowell recently wrote, oYet the rapid<lb />growth of that [black) middle class began even before the civil rights<lb />revolution of the 1960s, much less the racial quotas and preferences<lb /> that began in the 1970s. The rise of blacks into professional and<lb />similar occupations was faster in the five years preceding passage of<lb />the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than in the five years following its<lb />passage. ?<lb /><lb />Bond is, quite simply, wrong. But this blind belief "no affirma-<lb />tive action, no black middle class "dominates contemporary think-<lb />ing among oblack leaders ? and many other liberals. This mistaken<lb />view explains the almost pathological defense of big government and<lb />the indifference towards the unfair middle class tax burden. After all,<lb />but for government Ts benevolence, where would blacks be?<lb /><lb />Note Bond says a third of all blacks owe affirmative action.<lb />Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell places the figure at 100 percent:<lb /> oEverybody who's a person of color in this country has benefited<lb />from affirmative action. There has not been anybody who has gotten<lb />into college on their own, nobody who Ts gotten a job on their own,<lb />no one who Ts prospered as a businessman or a businesswoman on<lb />their own without affirmative action. ? 33 percent versus 100 per-<lb />cent? Pretty big difference. But why quibble?<lb /><lb />Now, no speech by a oblack leader ? seems complete without the<lb />obligatory attack on Ronald Reagan. Bond said, oThen Reagan<lb />removed government from every aspect of American life. They<lb />attempted to destroy all the laws that say America should be<lb />bias-free. ? Reagan removed government from every aspect of<lb />American life? Hey, despite promises, the Gip couldn Tt even shut<lb />down the Departments of Energy and Education. Social spending<lb />under Ronald Reagan went up, not down.<lb /><lb />If Bond means that Reagan Ts policies hurt black people, wrong<lb />again. Under Reagan, black adult unemployment fell faster than did<lb />white unemployment. Black teenage unemployment fell faster than<lb />did white teenage unemployment. And blacks started businesses at<lb />a rate faster than did whites, with the pace of revenues exceeding<lb />that of whites. In 1981, the nation Ts poverty rate stood at 14 percent.<lb />It declined to 11.6 percent in 1988, Reagan Ts last year in office.<lb /><lb />Republicans, the white people's party? Nearly half of all adults<lb />own stock, either directly or through some investment vehicle like<lb />a 401-K. This means that Americans of all races have a stake in<lb />strong, prosperous, growing companies. Since Republicans tax and<lb />regulate less "good things for the corporate bottom line "who is<lb />looking out for the little guy?<lb /><lb />Despite the dastardly Reagan, the black middle class grew. What<lb />does this say? It confirms Barbara Bush Ts remark, oWhat happens in<lb />your house is more important than what happens in the White<lb />House. ?<lb /><lb />So, Mr. Bond Ts pessimism is unwarranted. Worse than pessi-<lb />mism, however, is wasted energy. The tough problems "teen preg-<lb />nancy, under-performing schools, crime "get slighted in favor of<lb />the gratifying (but ultimately unproductive) kicking of Ronald<lb />Reagan and the Republicans.<lb /><lb />The great black singer Joe Williams just died. Like many of his<lb />black contemporaries, he toiled in relative obscurity until his<lb />mid-thirties, never reaching the status of other white crooners.<lb />When asked whether he felt bitter, Williams said, oA friend of mine<lb />once said that hate is too important an emotion to waste on someone<lb />you don Tt like. ? You know, like Republicans.<lb /><lb />(Larry Elder is a talk show host on KABC Radio.)<lb /><lb />a A Y veapidl<lb />moaths ago, the Willis family had<lb />_ their annual summer reunion. This<lb /><lb />was a different family gathering. It<lb />was different because for the first<lb />time in nearly 20 years, all of the<lb />youngsters were able to be present.<lb /><lb />In previous years, the children<lb />of the four brothers and two sisters<lb />of the Willis clan, had for one rea-<lb />son or another for not been able to<lb />attend. For the most part, just the<lb />senior adults had been involved in<lb />the previous gatherings.<lb /><lb />Now, the children were all out of<lb />college and were getting settled in<lb />their own individual careers and<lb />business. For some of them, this<lb />was the first time in their lives they<lb />had been able touch bases with all<lb />of their cousins, aunts and uncles.<lb /><lb />A program was planned. One of<lb />the brothers was a minister and he<lb />was Called upon to offer the prayer<lb />and the blessing. This was done and<lb />the women and some of the men<lb />retreated to the area where the foods<lb />would be served. An older uncle<lb />was seated about 25 yards away from<lb />the rest of the food with some kind<lb />of weird contraption at his feet.<lb /><lb />When he was asked about this<lb /> othing ? he had, he just laughed and<lb />said, oThis is my turkey fryer. ?<lb />Nobody believed him of course,<lb /><lb />until they saw him empty about:<lb /><lb />three gallons of peanut oil into it,<lb />then light a fire under it.<lb /><lb />He then pulled a whole turkey<lb />from a huge chest. The bird looked<lb />as though it weighed about 16-19<lb />Ibs. He injected the turkey with some<lb />spices and stuff and then he tied a<lb />lightweight nylon rope through it.<lb />He lowered the turkey into the boil-<lb />ing oil and the crowd grew. They<lb />had never heard of fried turkey.<lb /><lb /> As the pots and pans came for-<lb /><lb />wot on ates serving ke. some of<lb />the younger folk were amazed. They _<lb /><lb />saw chitterlings (chittlins), smoked<lb />ham, (somebody had had a ham<lb />shipped from Arkansas), mounds<lb />of fried chicken, ribs, smoked sau-<lb />sages, roast beef and pork roast.<lb />One of the women had found some<lb />pigtails and cooked them with white<lb />beans. There were at least three<lb />different huge pots of greens. One<lb />had mixed greens, another had just<lb /><lb />collards and another had greens<lb /><lb />cooked with okra.<lb /><lb />There were several different pans<lb />of yams and sweet potatoes. One<lb />was cooked with apples, brown<lb />sugar and cinnamon and topped with<lb />marshmallows. Another had pecans<lb />in it and then there were a few with<lb />just sweet potatoes, sugars and<lb />spice.<lb /><lb />Of course there was corn on the<lb />cob and potato salad, some with<lb />mustard, and some without.<lb /><lb />The desserts were too numerous<lb />to attempt to count, with at east six.<lb />different kinds of cakes and maybe<lb />ten different kinds of pies and with<lb />always more.of the same waiting in<lb />the wings. .<lb /><lb />One of the oddities of this re-<lb />union was that some of the foods<lb />that were there were new to some of<lb />the young people. They didn Tt now<lb />anything about odirty rice ? or fried<lb />gizzards. They didn Tt know about<lb />pigtails, pig ears or osnoots. ? This<lb />was indeed a cultural awakening<lb />for many of them.<lb /><lb />An amazing thing happened<lb />however. As the younger people<lb />ate, they initially criticized the<lb />choice of food, claiming it was un-<lb />healthy. They were looking for<lb />snacks that were fat free and per-<lb />haps Sushi, even. They complained<lb />about the deserts and the pork, call-<lb /><lb />ing the ribs and other pork. oswine. ?<lb />Then, one of the older family<lb />members happened to hear the criti-<lb /><lb /> cism. He didn Tt make an issue, he<lb /><lb />just began to talk about the history<lb />of the family. He explained that the<lb />young people who were concerned<lb />about the food were probably right<lb />in some of the cases. But, he ex-<lb />plained this food was the food that<lb />had brought generation after gen-<lb />eration of this and many other black<lb />families through hard times.<lb /><lb />He talked at length about the<lb />times when their family didn Tt have<lb />anything other than the scraps from<lb />the table at the big house. He ex-<lb /><lb />plained about the depression years<lb /><lb />and how their faith in God and their<lb />own ingenuity in fixing whatever<lb />was available had seen them through<lb />the rough years.<lb /><lb />As the evening wore down, and<lb />the darkness began to creep in, some<lb />member of the family had brought a<lb />large television set and VCR to the<lb />park for the family members to<lb />gather gather around to watch oSoul<lb />Food. ?<lb /><lb />Some of the youngsters had seen<lb />it in the theater and some other<lb />others had seen it on television.<lb />There were, however, several of the<lb />older folk who had not seen it, and<lb />didn't know what it was about.<lb /><lb />As the movie played, people<lb />became engrossed in it. Sniffles<lb />could be heard from more than one<lb />person. Noses being blown and dis-<lb />creet coughs made it clear that the<lb />people were enjoying the movie.<lb /><lb />But nobody could explain why<lb />the tears came. Nobody could say<lb />why so many were crying at this<lb />silly movie.<lb /><lb />Then great-grandma Willis, a<lb />stately woman with much class as<lb />style belied her 77 years. She spoke<lb /><lb />up and in aclear voice said, oJust in<lb />case anybody wants to know, yes, I<lb />cried when I saw that movie. It took<lb />me home and it made me Have a<lb />better understanding of all those<lb />years that had gone by. I remem-<lb />bered my granny and granpaw, |<lb />could see them picking peas in Caro-<lb />lina. I could hear them talking<lb />among themselves in a room with<lb />the coal oil lamp at night. ?<lb /><lb /> oI remember Sunday morning<lb />breakfast with hot biscuits and sor-<lb />ghum and sometimes some fatback<lb />or jowl bacon, ? she continued, Af-<lb />ter church on Sunday morning,<lb />mama and granny would come<lb />home, fry chicken and we would<lb />have greens and candied yams and<lb />Aunt Minnie would bake a marble<lb />cake with white icing. We would<lb />eat and then sit around on the front<lb />porch and talk about the week past<lb />and the week to come. ?<lb /><lb /> oMake no mistake about it, this<lb />movie took me home and the feel-<lb />ing in that household is the same<lb />feeling that ought to exist at this<lb />family reunion. ?<lb /><lb />As she spoke, her eyes filled<lb />with tears, as if she was remember-<lb />ing those family members who had<lb />gone on, and she looked at the<lb />youngsters who had been critical<lb />and she said, oThis is the soul food<lb />movie for our family. It tells the<lb />story of the love we have shared<lb />and all of the things we have had to<lb />do to keep the family together. ?<lb /><lb />She stopped. And the reunion<lb />was quiet. Then somebody looked<lb />over at the table where the food had<lb />been and commented, oFor young<lb />folk who thought they were too good<lb />and too sophisticated for Southern<lb />food, it sure went away fast. There<lb />ain Tt nuthin T left, and that includes<lb />the bones from the fried turkey. ?<lb /><lb />J, -<lb /><lb />My THOUGHTS<lb /> A Elvis? Hitler? or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jn?<lb /><lb />By EARL OFARI HUTCHINSON, PhD<lb /><lb />} Part 1<lb /><lb />If the voting booth closed and<lb />the ballots were counted today for Time<lb />magazine Ts Person of the Century ? either Elvis<lb />Presley or Adolph Hitler would be runaway vote<lb />getters over Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Both<lb />men each have nearly doubled the number of<lb />votes that King has gotten for Time Magazine's<lb />top spot.<lb /><lb />Since Time announced its national poll for<lb /> oPerson of the Century ? earlier this year, King Ts<lb />vote total has barely budged. The editors insist<lb />that the poll is just that, a poll, and they will<lb />make and announce their final selection in De-<lb />cember. But the fact that he has barely made the<lb />top ten list tells much about how little the tow-<lb />ering contributions King has made to the move-<lb />ments for social change in this century are ap-<lb />preciated.<lb /><lb />A King selection for the top spot should have<lb />less to do with what the editors at Time think<lb />about him than what the millions globally who<lb />have benefited from the movements for civil<lb />rights, peace and justice think about him. Sull,<lb />Time's oPerson of the Century ? derby 1s a price-<lb />less opportunity to educate young persons and<lb />remind adults of King Ts eternal legacy of peace<lb />and social justice and the need to continue the<lb />struggle to fulfill that legacy.<lb /><lb />Yet King Ts contributions remain in mortal<lb />danger of being shoved to the wayside of his-<lb />tory. Much of the public tightly labels him as a<lb /><lb /> oblack leader, ? a ocivil rights ? leader, or say that<lb />he simply imitated Gandhi. These are huge myths.<lb />King certainly was a staunch practitioner of<lb />Gandhi's tactics of non-violent resistance and<lb />non-accommodation to injustice. But he took his<lb />teacher's message and refined, broadened and<lb />stretched it into a global moral imperative for all<lb />humankind. That moral imperative stretched way<lb />beyond the limits of the civil rights movement.<lb /><lb />When he formed the Southern Christian Lead-<lb />ership Conference in 1957, King staked out the<lb />moral high ground for the infant modern day<lb />civil rights movement. It was classic good ver-<lb />sus evil. Many white Americans were sickened<lb />by the gory news scenes of baton welding racist<lb />Southern sheriffs, firehoses, police dogs, and<lb />Klan violence unleashed against peaceful black<lb />protesters. <lb /><lb />King made it possible, even obligatory, for<lb />millions of persons throughout the world to<lb /><lb />condemn racial segregation as immoral and "<lb /><lb />indefensible. The civil rights movement spurred<lb />students and workers in Asia, Africa, and Latin<lb />America to oppose the military strongmen, dic-<lb />tators and demagogues in their countries. He<lb />inspired liberation priests in Latin America,<lb />and student demonstrators in Europe. He deeply<lb />influenced the struggle against Apartheid in<lb />South Africa. Nelson Mandela has repeatedly<lb />said that he owes a profound debt of gratitude to<lb />King.<lb /><lb />Mandela is not the only major leader to say<lb /><lb />that. Caesar Chavez, a leader much deserving of<lb />praise and gratitude for his selfless contribu-<lb />tions to peace and social justice, made his great-<lb />est mark as champion of the farmworkers and<lb />labor organizing battles. Chavez never hesitated<lb />to admit that King taught and inspired him.<lb /><lb />Nearly all of the main anti-war leaders ex-<lb />pressed their debt of gratitude to King. They<lb />recognized that his brave and outspoken opposi-<lb />tion to the Vietnam war and militarism gave a<lb />huge boost to the anti-war movement. The lead-<lb />ers of the gay rights, and women Ts movements<lb />also owe a debt of gratitude to King. They too<lb />were inspired by him and borrowed heavily<lb />from the tactics of the civil rights movement.<lb /><lb />With due respect to Elvis, and (ugh) Hitler,<lb />this is what we should tell the editors at Time<lb />magazine when they pick their oPerson of the<lb />Century. ?<lb /><lb />Time Magazine<lb /><lb />email: letters @time.com<lb /><lb />fax: (212) 522-8949<lb /><lb />(Earl Ofari Hutchinson is director of the<lb />National Alliance for Positive Action. On Oct.<lb />27, the National Alliance will hold a Martin<lb />Luther King oPerson of the Century o Walk. The<lb />group is calling for similar walks and com-<lb />memorations in other cities between October 27<lb />and 30 to urge everyone to tell Time Magazine to<lb />make King the oPerson of the Century. ? He can<lb />be heard on KPFK Radio, 90.7, Tuesdays, 7-8<lb />p.m.)<lb /><lb />J<lb /><lb />The homogenized<lb />version of com-<lb />munity (black) press put out by the<lb />Los Angeles Times, a weekly insert<lb />called-Our Times, put out a omost<lb />influential ? list a couple of weeks<lb />ago. Itrepresented a perfect example<lb />of why one should be very careful<lb />about compiling lists. Particularly<lb />when you label it, oMost Influen-<lb />tial. ? Did the list convey some people<lb />with some influence? Definitely.<lb />People who are oMost familiar<lb />(People you're most likely to see<lb />everywhere), ? maybe. People who<lb />are oMost popular, ? questionable.<lb />People who are oMost Influential ?<lb />in the lives of people in Crenshaw<lb />and Inglewood, a few but not many.<lb />Definitely not 103.<lb /><lb />After a couple dozen calls of<lb /> oSamad, did you see that #@%!, ? |<lb />thought I'd take up the paper Ts offer<lb />for a public critique of its list ( oDid<lb />we goof? ?) before it puts out its<lb />reader Ts list. I Tm qualified inasmuch<lb />as I'm not exactly looking to get on<lb />anybody's (particularly the other's<lb />man) list, and the olistees ? are not<lb /><lb />likely to take me seriously, but the .<lb /><lb />rest of the community readership<lb />will, I love being in the position of<lb />being underestimated (freedom does<lb />that kind of thing). Comin T outta<lb />nowhere works.<lb /><lb />Why is this list particularly dan-<lb /><lb />BETWEEN THE Lines<lb /> Their T Times 1999 Most Influential: Example of Why Lists T Can be Dangerous<lb /><lb />gerous? Because it gives a false im-<lb />pression of degrees of influence that<lb />are deeply flawed, highly exclusion-<lb />ary and quite partisan in the Los<lb />Angeles Times desire to make oIts<lb />leaders ? in our communities. In fact,<lb />the editorial olead-in ? to othe list ?<lb />states that there is no real (scien-<lb />tific) basis for their picks. They say<lb />they were just oour ? picks to oin-<lb />voke debate... ? Well, that it did.<lb /><lb />Imagining playing a game and<lb />saying it doesn Tt matter owho won T<lb />Vince Lombardi once said, oIf it<lb />doesn Tt matter who wins or loses,<lb />then why do we keep score? ? If<lb />you're going to have a omost ? any-<lb />thing, what Ts the basis for the num-<lb />ber you settle on? Why 103? Why<lb />not 33, or just three? Clearly, this<lb />helps you understand that there is<lb />another motive in mind.<lb /><lb />A group of us, who know the<lb />community sat around a table to<lb /> ohave fun ? with this list. We counted<lb />22 people (that we could agree upon)<lb />that actually had omost influential ?<lb />status inthe community. We counted<lb />another 31 that had osome juice ?<lb />status (Brownie point: naming teach-<lb />ers was a nice touch). That left an-<lb />other fifty (50) people that we all<lb />said, o???, ? in terms of the level of<lb />influence they had in the commu-<lb />nity, Our Times should have entitled<lb />its list, o103 people we like in<lb /><lb />©<lb /><lb />Crenshaw and Inglewood. ? There<lb />would have been no controversy over<lb />that. People can like who they want<lb />to like, but when you designate it<lb /> omost influential, ? it Ts highly mis-<lb />leading, almost irresponsible and<lb />downright wack!!<lb /><lb />Here Ts how ridiculous this list<lb />was; there were no community me-<lb />dia organizations on the list. There<lb />are five black-owned newspapers,<lb />one black-owned radio station, and<lb />two community-based magazines<lb />that provide tens of thousands in the<lb />community their principle sources<lb />of information (news and views) on<lb />a daily or weekly basis. Black radio<lb />and black newspapers are the most<lb />influential entities for information<lb /><lb />_ in our community. You'd think one<lb /><lb />publisher, editor, writer, or general<lb />manager would make the list, right?<lb />Nope.<lb /><lb />There are three community banks<lb />that provide thousands of commu-<lb />nity people services that the so-called<lb /> oconventional ? banks don Tt. They<lb />put millions of dollars into loans for<lb />home ownership and business (when<lb />the other man rejects many of them).<lb />Did one community bank CEO make<lb />the list? Nope.<lb /><lb />There are two major medical cen-<lb />ters (on Prarie and Santa Rosalia)<lb />with dozens of community-based<lb />doctors who treat hundreds of pa-<lb /><lb />tients on a daily basis. Did any make<lb />the list? Nope.<lb /><lb />One of the top academic private<lb />schools in the nation (Marcus<lb />Garvey) "which has graduated hun-<lb />dreds of students into top colleges<lb />with so-called incorrigible youth<lb />from inner @ity schools "made the<lb />list, right? Nope (nor did several<lb />other high achieving private schools<lb />in the area).<lb /><lb />Did any of the bookstore owners,<lb />restaurant-owners (except Flying<lb />Fox), and watering holes where thou-<lb />sands of people frequent to eat and<lb />socialize oin their community, ? and<lb />discuss the issues of the day make<lb />the list? Nope. The owner of the<lb />most successful funeral home in<lb /> oour ? community serving over 5,000<lb />bereaved families a year, did he make<lb />the list? Nope. Nor did lawyers like<lb />Johnnie Cochran or Melanie Lomax?<lb />Nor did the top two gang interven-<lb />tion agencies in the area make othe<lb />list. ? All of these were literally ono-<lb />brainers ? for a omost influential ?<lb />list. Then there was othe list Ts ? bi-<lb />ased subjectivity. If people are in-<lb />fluential, they make the list whether<lb />you like them or not.<lb /><lb />Can you imagine the nation Ts<lb />most recognizable former congress-<lb />woman (and county .supervisor)<lb />making the list, but not the nation Ts<lb />currently most recognizable (and<lb /><lb />most influential with President<lb />Clinton) congresswoman, who rep-<lb />resents the district this list covers,<lb />not making the list? Nor the siting<lb />state senator (and chair of the Black<lb />Caucus), nor the sitting assembly-<lb />men (in Crenshaw and Inglewood)?<lb />None of them made the list. |<lb /><lb />The obig ? old Churches (FAME,<lb />West Angeles, Holman and<lb />Crenshaw Christian Center) made<lb />the list, but the fastest growing large<lb /> oprogressive ? non-denominationals<lb />are currently the influential congre-<lb />gation in the faith community. Can<lb />you imagine the Crenshaw Cham-<lb />ber president making the list, and<lb />not the presidents of the omore in-<lb />fluential ? business trade organiza-<lb />tions from the Black Business Asso-<lb />ciation of the Greater Los Angeles<lb />African American Chamber? Or<lb />even the L.A. Chamber of Com-<lb />merce with its president, Essential<lb />Burts, being from our community,<lb />not making othe list? ?<lb /><lb />None of Tem made it. There were<lb />notable oexceptions. ? A few that<lb />made the list are not from Crenshaw/<lb />Inglewood. But there are three Cal<lb />State University presidents that did<lb />not make the list. What's the basis<lb />for going out of the area? There<lb />were some oPasadena ? activists, and<lb /> oSouth Bay ? people who made the<lb />list, but some very obvious senior<lb /><lb />nh<lb /><lb />activists and elected officials that<lb />didn Tt. Very subjective choices<lb />(probably for political correctness<lb />sake).<lb /><lb />The most glaring (and aggravat-<lb />ing) bias was that demonstrated to-<lb />ward young leadership. Not one per-<lb />son under the age of 30 made the list.<lb />One person age 30 (actress Wendy<lb />Robinson) made the list. Los Angeles<lb />has learned very little since 1992 in<lb />terms of who's running What in L.A.<lb />There are some young professionals<lb />and community advocates doing some<lb />wonderful things in L.A. "none of it<lb />being recognized. If you don Tt think<lb />they have influence, attend one of<lb />their functions and see thousands of<lb />people you T ve never seen before, few<lb />of whom know you. They have their<lb />own network and their own leader-<lb />ship. And they probably recognize<lb />few people oon the list ? as influenc-<lb />ing their realities.<lb /><lb /> oThe list ? clearly continues to<lb />ignore a whole (probably our best<lb />trained) generation of technocrats<lb />and ocyber-prenuers ? that have more<lb />influence than most anyone they<lb />named, Tsk, tsk.<lb /><lb />Making lists is a very dangerous<lb />proposition. It not only let's people<lb />know what you think you know, it<lb />makes it very obvious to people<lb />what you don Tt know. And that can<lb />hurt you.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />To the editor<lb /><lb />The Bible is the manufacturer's<lb />manual for all our relationships.<lb />If all of us would follow its<lb />instructions, our<lb />would be ideal and racism and<lb />prejudice would not continue to<lb />trouble many of us. Our best<lb />defenses against discrimination<lb />are education, patience, under-<lb />standing and time. Parents should<lb />be careful,for we educate our<lb />children every day, by our words,<lb />our deeds, our values and most of<lb />all by our thoughts. Children's<lb />attitudes are formed by watching<lb />their parents.Our aspirations are<lb />similar regardless of skin color or<lb />ethnicity, for we want to be<lb />accepted, liked, respected and<lb />treated with dignity. It is our<lb />choice to live in harmony, or to<lb />live with greed hate, suspicion.<lb />Let's stop blaming everything on<lb />race. God created us all from the<lb />dust of the earth and to the dust<lb />of the earth we'll return.<lb />Prejudice is essentially an out-<lb />growth of ignorance.<lb /><lb />Beatrice Maye<lb /><lb />relationships,<lb /><lb />THAT MAKES MARRIAGES<lb /><lb />What's the secret of a ly<lb />marriage? Lots of people would<lb /><lb />time for romance. But after<lb /><lb />videotaping. 800 couples, John<lb /><lb />Gottman, Ph.D., Author of The<lb /><lb />Seven Principles for Making<lb />Marriage Work, discovered it's<lb />simpler than that: in the happiest<lb />marriages, the number: of nice<lb />things couples do for each other<lb />exceeds the number of negatives<lb />by five to one. In other words, for<lb />every argument they have, they do<lb />five small but nice things that<lb />make each other happy.<lb /><lb />"Any couple who adopts this<lb />five-to-one way of relating will<lb />feel immediately happier, closer,<lb />and more loving", promises psy-<lb />chologist Steve Brody, Ph.D.<lb />co-author of Renewing your<lb />Marriage at Mid-life. In fact,<lb />experts agree the formula can<lb />even turn an unhappy marriage<lb />around. So how do you start<lb />using it in your marriage?<lb /><lb />So for the very happiest mar-<lb />riage...For every one of these you<lb />do:<lb /><lb />1. Criticize what he's wearing<lb /><lb />2. Remind him that he forgot to<lb /><lb />do a chore<lb /><lb />3. Listen with only half an ear to<lb /><lb />what he's saying<lb /><lb />4. Disagree with him over money<lb /><lb />5. Throw out that old catalog you<lb /><lb />forgot he was saving<lb /><lb />say common interests and lots of<lb /><lb />6. Overdraw your joint checking<lb /><lb />- account<lb /><lb />7. Tell him how much his mother<lb />irritated you last week<lb /><lb />8. Scold him for not being<lb />attentive enough 2<lb /><lb />9. Get distracted when he is<lb />feeling romantic<lb /><lb />10. Have an argument. (By the<lb />way, remember that huge fight<lb />during which you pulled out every<lb />grievance you've ever had against<lb />him? That still counts as just one<lb />negative incident, since it was one<lb />negative experience, explains<lb />Brody).<lb /><lb />Want to make up for all that<lb />negativity, and make your mar-<lb />riage among the happiest?<lb /><lb />Do five of these:<lb /><lb />1.Tell him he looks great<lb /><lb />2. Praise his taste in<lb /><lb />clothes/music/movies/anything<lb />3. Tell him what a good dad he is<lb /><lb />4. Let him know how much you<lb />fove his sense of humor.<lb /><lb />5. Tell him you appreciate what<lb />he did around the house<lb /><lb />6. Let him know he is a terrific<lb />protector or provider<lb /><lb />7. Compare him favorably to<lb />some other nice or handsome man<lb />you know<lb /><lb />8. Rave about him in front of<lb />others<lb /><lb />9. -Brush his hair with your<lb /><lb />Kevin DeWitt Cobbs and Natalie Marie Ward exchanged vows Saturday, October 30, 1999<lb />at, 3:00 p.m. The wedding took place at St. Rest Holiness Church in Winterville, North<lb />Carolina Reception followed at Kiwanis Bldg. in Winterville, NC.<lb /><lb />Photo By Faith May<lb /><lb />Thoughts<lb /><lb />Dr. George Hawkins<lb /><lb />A Very Present Help<lb /><lb />Tribulation was one of the signs<lb />Jesus gave for His return.<lb />Matthew 24:32 reads, "Then shall<lb />be great tribulation such as was<lb />not since the beginning of the<lb />world to this time, no, nor ever<lb />shall be." The world has known<lb />trouble for a long time, Uffit this<lb />trouble would be without prece-<lb />dent.<lb /><lb />How many times have you<lb />recently heard elderly people say,<lb />"I've never seen anything like this<lb />flood before." The news media<lb />labeled it The Flood of the<lb />Century. Never have so many<lb />josses of lives of humans, live-<lb />Stock and cattle from a flood been<lb />recorded in Pitt County and<lb />surrounding areas. Perhaps this is<lb />a warning to us, and faithful<lb />Christians are admonished not to<lb /><lb />Spiritual<lb /><lb />be spiritually asleep so that they<lb />would not know the "day of the<lb />Lore "had arrived (I Thessalonians<lb />:1-6)<lb /><lb />The flood waters recently experi-<lb />enced in our area crept upon us<lb />unaware. Some were sleeping --<lb />only to awaken and find them-<lb />selves trapped in their own homes<lb />as a result of high waters. Some<lb />were ordered to evacuate, and<lb />they did. Others remained in their<lb />homes -- determined to "stick it<lb />out" -- only to lose their lives,<lb />sending a clear message that<lb /> oyour arms are too short to box<lb />with God."<lb /><lb />Even though the sign of<lb />tribulation has already begun (and<lb />it will get worse) the good that<lb />will come from it will be more<lb />than compensated in Christ's<lb />1000-year Kingdom. We cannot<lb /><lb />~afford to be hung up on "things."<lb />The Bible tells us to "lay not up<lb />for yourselves treasures on earth<lb />where thieves break in and steal,<lb />but lay up for yourselves treasures<lb />in heaven." There are those who<lb />feel that they are secure in all of<lb />the necessities and some luxuries<lb />that life can afford. They go about<lb />"business as usual," never seeking<lb />the Lord Jesus Christ, never<lb />considering that the "things" of<lb />life can be wiped from them in a<lb />moment. What then do they have<lb />when all material "things" are<lb />taken away? Do they have Jesus<lb />in their lives? Do they have Jesus<lb />to turn to? To depend upon?<lb />Psalm 121:1-2 reads, "I will lift<lb />up mine eyes unto the hills from<lb /><lb />whence cometh my help. My help<lb />cometh from the Lord which<lb />made heaven and earth."<lb /><lb />Job had all the material things<lb />of life. He had all of the wealth<lb />that could be afforded at that time.<lb />Yet he had everything taken away<lb />from him, literally over night --<lb />his whole family, all of his cattle,<lb />even his own body was ravished<lb />with disease. But his soul was<lb />spared because he had a relation-<lb />ship with God. He never lost faith<lb />that God was able to save him. He<lb />had a strong T belief that God was<lb />able to deliver him, the same<lb />belief that Shadrach, Meshach<lb />and Abednego had when they<lb />were thrown into the fiery furnace<lb />and came out without a singe.<lb />After Job had been through the<lb />test of trials, tribulations, and<lb />losses, God restored him to health<lb />and gave him back twice as much<lb />as he had before.<lb /><lb />To the flood victims, | would<lb />like to say, that even though you<lb />have suffered losses and disrup-<lb />tion of your normal lives, keep<lb />your hearts and minds through.<lb />Christ Jesus and he will supply all<lb />your need actording to His riches<lb />in glory. Out of this all, you will<lb />eventually see =e Shekinah glory<lb />--the brightness of the Lord's<lb />glory (Ezekiel 10:4) when He<lb />restores you to even better things<lb />than you had before. Then you<lb />will be able to say like Job, "I<lb />have heard of Thee by the hearin<lb />of the ear, but now mine eye ceath<lb />Thee." (Job 42:5)<lb /><lb />fingertips<lb />10. Every big achievement has a<lb />big price. There is no easy road<lb />to success and riches.<lb /><lb />6. Work hard.<lb /><lb />7. Sacrifice is a part of paying the<lb />price. Never sacrifice quality, there's<lb />no substitute for building it right.<lb /><lb />12. Work with those who deserve<lb />it, not just those who need it.<lb /><lb />13. A good leader keeps moving<lb />ahead constantly, regardless of<lb />whether conditions are good or<lb />bad.<lb /><lb />14. People don't have time for a lot<lb />of meetings. Neither do you.<lb /><lb />15. You can't do it all; teamwork<lb />is essential and to an active<lb />business, church, school, home.<lb /><lb />16. Leaders never forget the<lb />power of giving in their personal<lb />and business lives.<lb /><lb />17. Don't catch the disease of<lb />"self-ness", your loyalty, commit-<lb />ment, faith in people, talents and<lb />energy and you will win. The<lb />more people you help the more<lb />people will help you. Read Luke<lb />6:30.<lb /><lb />18. Give without expecting in<lb />return. <lb />Myra Woater<lb /><lb />Black Like Me<lb /><lb />While sitting in a meeting<lb /><lb />-with twenty or so leaders in the<lb /><lb />field of mental retardation |<lb />discovered, much to my dismay<lb />an appalling fact. People, regard-<lb />less of education and experience<lb />can be very ignorant and com-<lb />pletely without tact when it comes<lb />to matters of race. | sat in that<lb />meeting surrounded by faces that<lb />were quite like mine, and some<lb />very different while inside my<lb />emotions and my anger raged. Let<lb />me first pause and share with you<lb />what brought me to this point. As<lb />a child growing up | can remem-<lb />ber the feel of Christmas. The<lb />crisp winter air that would freeze<lb />my small fingers even through my<lb />mittens, circling toys in "Wish<lb />Books" and what was always a<lb />joy for me, writing my letter to<lb />Santa. Each year I would pen out<lb />what | wanted and end by telling<lb />Santa that I had been real good.<lb /><lb />As an 8-year-old child I lived for.<lb /><lb />the opportunity to take a picture<lb />with Santa. Dressed in blue, and<lb />bundled up we would head for the<lb />mall and the South Pole. I can<lb />remember waiting in line for what<lb />seemed like an eternity in. my<lb />child's mind. And then. suddenly<lb />leaving the line and starting out<lb />for a different mall. The reasoning<lb />my sister would tell me was,<lb />"That's the wrong Santa ?.<lb /><lb />Not quite understanding tears<lb />would fill my eyes as I looked<lb />over my shoulder watching the<lb />South Pole become smaller and<lb />smaller, while Christmas Carols<lb />filled the air, Finally, to my relief<lb />we would find the right Santa and<lb />| would climb up on his lap and<lb />tell him of Easy-Bake Ovens,<lb />Baby-that-Away and my favorite,<lb />Cookie Monster.<lb /><lb />Eighteen years later |<lb />understood what my sister meant<lb />when she said the Santa was the<lb />"wrong one". He was the wrong<lb />one because he was white. He<lb />skin didn't mirror my skin. To my<lb />sister Santa couldn't appreciated<lb />my beaded hair that clicked and<lb />clanked when climbed on his lap.<lb />He couldn't understand what |<lb />meant when | said I wanted a doll<lb />that looked like me. And he could<lb />never realize the importance of<lb />allowing a child to see themselves<lb />in others faces.<lb /><lb />Now as an adult, the whole idea<lb />of Santa-a stranger bringing toys<lb />to children-is quite unappealing to<lb />me. but for many children and<lb />parents it still holds that same<lb />thrill that it once held for me. So<lb />that night while sitting in that<lb />meeting to hear the board presi-<lb />dent speak with the confidence<lb />that can only come from years of<lb />ignorance, that the Santa "can't be<lb />female and can't be black", sent<lb />off alarms in my head for several<lb /><lb />VATA 1B otzterel (or) Rvevexe Coen] carol mereem Yee<lb /><lb />ae, Make you<lb /><lb />r next reunion an extra<lb />special occasion by planning it at<lb />the Hilton!<lb /><lb /> "<lb /><lb />* Elegant, yet affordable, family accommodations<lb /><lb />° Reception planning inclu<lb /><lb />1h)<lb /><lb />( ine coordination of entet<lb />e WNCUCHIS I<lb /><lb />} |<lb />) \<lb />howew#rs ind decorations)<lb /><lb />1<lb /><lb />Ta CY ad MTF } |<lb />Cate nng CO MALoRlimelele<lb /><lb />]<lb /><lb />tf Tip<lb />al LLM<lb /><lb />Formal or casual group dinners<lb /><lb />| Jances Tense fle Or,<lb /><lb />Fashion Shows<lb /><lb />Wor.cp Cutsine<lb /><lb />For more information, please call our<lb />professional event planners at<lb /><lb />(252)355-5000<lb /><lb />CHRSTNNES<lb /><lb />207 SW Greenville Blud., Greenville, NC 27834 *<lb /><lb />Satestateaalancacenliy7eemiteaaial vailahl<lb />faging anda PCC ZAC UST TU I AV ALA<lb /><lb />®<lb /><lb />Hilton<lb /><lb />Greenville<lb /><lb />Free Diabetes Testing<lb />Come to WOOW.<lb /><lb />tome te ns a rer ain aenamen NR EAN A<lb /><lb />Wednesday<lb /><lb />November<lb /><lb />7:00 AM -<lb /><lb />ns ot.<lb /><lb />17, 1999<lb />9:00 AM<lb /><lb />different reasons.<lb /><lb />First of all Santa was always<lb />black to me, and now for my niece<lb />and nephew Santa also is black<lb />and for the hundreds of thousands<lb />of other black children waiting to<lb />see Santa he too should be black.<lb />Maybe my whole view of the<lb />meaning of Santa has been lost,<lb />and I will be the first to admit that<lb />years of watching a racist world<lb />that has filtered into the world of<lb />our children has made me bitter.<lb /><lb />The second and most disturbing<lb />reason is the ease with which this<lb />educated woman insulted not only<lb />myself and the other A frican-<lb />Americans present, but also the<lb />entire body. It would seem that<lb />while working in the field of<lb />mental retardation and encounter-<lb />ing prejudice on an almost daily<lb />basis one would develop an<lb />internal sensor that would alert<lb />them to the fact that not every<lb />thought that enters their head<lb />should be shared.<lb /><lb />| share this story with you, not<lb />to create a controversy surround-<lb />ing the color of Santa or even his<lb />existence. | share this story to say<lb />that the claws of racism have<lb />become much more subtle and are<lb />being masked as, "slips of the<lb />tongues T, "a simple mistake", and<lb />"just the way I am". When we<lb />consider that a town like Trenton<lb />shaped in racism and born into<lb />prejudice can elect a black, female<lb />mayor we can believe that there is<lb /><lb />still hope. For black adults we are T<lb /><lb />used to the crafty ways of racism,<lb />but now it would seem that our<lb />children must. learn these same<lb />survival skills that will allow them<lb />to live and create what so many<lb />people have spoken of, a utopia<lb />society.<lb /><lb />Dedicated to all the Black<lb />Santas who still bring joy to<lb />white and black faces!<lb /><lb />Flu and Wiihenie Shots Save .<lb />Lives of North Carolinians with<lb /><lb />People with diabetes are three<lb />times more likely to die with<lb />complications of influenza (Flu)<lb /><lb />and pneumonia, yet only half of<lb />those with get an annual flu shot,<lb />and only a third have gotten a<lb />pneumococcal shot.Docters rec-<lb />ommend flu shots in the fall,<lb />before flu season, which gener-<lb />ally runs November through<lb />March. Hats off to all young Black<lb /><lb />Photo By Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />A response to the article ap-<lb />pearing in the September 16-<lb />October 4, 1999 issue of The<lb />Minority Voice titled<lb /> oCommissioner Savage<lb />Arrested For Drunk Drving".<lb /><lb />After reading the article about<lb />Commissioner Jeff Savage's arrest<lb />for driving under the influence, we<lb />thought it was necessary to re-<lb />spond and let Jeff and our commu-<lb />nity know that he has the Pitt<lb />County Chapter of the Southern<lb />Christian Leadership<lb />Conference Ts support. We realize<lb />that drinking any amount of alco-<lb />hol. and driving especially on<lb />public property is not permissible<lb />in our society, but we see no<lb />reason why the two policemen had<lb />to treat him like a common<lb />criminal and a second class citi-<lb />zen. Jeff has proven to be a worthy<lb />first class citizen in every sense of<lb />the word and has done so very<lb />much to help our community<lb />prosper for all races in the Pitt<lb />County area.<lb /><lb />When a police officer is about to<lb />arrest someone, shouldn't he read<lb />him his right and give him time to<lb />respond? According to what Mr.<lb />Savage said in the article, he<lb />received no warning from the<lb />policemen stating that he was<lb />under arrest. We feel that smash-<lb />ing his window, dousing him with<lb />pepper spray and pressing his face<lb />to the asphalt was absolutely<lb />uncalled for and not acceptable.<lb /><lb />Announcing 7th Annual<lb />Greenville Community<lb />Shelters Rattle |<lb /><lb />It's raffle time again! <lb />THE GREAT FLOOD OF 1919<lb /><lb />STREAMS OVERFLOW; HEAVY<lb />DAMAGE MANY _ POINTS<lb />LOOKED FOR Neuse and Other<lb />Rivers Flooded - Crops and Stock<lb />in Danger- Record Rainfall<lb /><lb />The weather forecast is for rain<lb />Tuesday night and Wednesday.<lb />Neuse River is flooded. It is<lb />rising along its entire length from<lb />the rains of the past nine days.<lb />The Roanoke and Cape Fear and<lb /> numerous other streams upstate<lb />and in this section also threaten to<lb />go our of bounds. The Cape Fear<lb />registered 43 feet at Fayetteville<lb />Monday. The Neuse was 18.4:<lb />feet at Smithfteld. The Roanoke<lb />reached 41.2 feet at Weldon. The<lb />Tar is expected to overflow<lb />shortly.<lb /><lb />Farmers along the rivers are<lb />preparing to drive stock out of the<lb />low grounds. At hundreds of<lb />points west of here flood water<lb />and the continuing rains are<lb />threatening enormous damage to<lb />crops. Precipitation records have<lb />been broken at West Carolina<lb />points.<lb /><lb />July 23, 1919<lb /><lb />On Wednesday, the 10th consecu-<lb />tive day of the war of the elements<lb />on this section Ts bumper crops,<lb />fields throughout the section were<lb />ankle to knee-deep in water.<lb />Hundreds of pessimistic reports<lb />poured in from the rural districts.<lb />Some of these said irreparable<lb />damage had already been done to<lb />cotton and tobacco and that corn<lb />stood in a fair way of suffering<lb />shortly. Streams Over Bank<lb />Scores of creeks. runs and ditches<lb /><lb />were over their banks. Roads<lb />were submerged in spots. The<lb />precipitation during the dark<lb />hours of the morning was of<lb />cloudburst propertions, following<lb />upon similar downpours Sunday,<lb />Monday and Tuesday. A drizzle,<lb />apt to turn into showers at any<lb />time, continued through the day.<lb /><lb />The sun appeared after 240<lb />hours T absence to have deserted<lb />the country. Thé weather was<lb />similar all the way from Florida to<lb />the north of Washington. Sewers<lb />in north Kinston at 7 a.m. had not<lb />been able to carry off the night's<lb />rainfall.<lb /><lb />Streams Running Away<lb /><lb />With most of the rivers in the<lb />state flooding, some observers say<lb />the worst is yet to come along the<lb />shallow basins of North<lb />Carolina Ts lowland " streams.<lb />Neuse River at this point has gone<lb />over its banks at places south and<lb />west of the city.<lb /><lb />The high bank along the western<lb />edge of the city and the rise<lb />beginning at the southern corpo-<lb />rate line will protect the city from<lb />inundation. The Neuse is still six<lb />to eight feet below the high water<lb /><lb />mark of 1908 and even with the -<lb /><lb />great volume of water yet to come<lb />down river, it is not probable that<lb />the record stage of that year will<lb />be equaled...<lb /><lb />July 26, 1919 RIVER OVER<lb />BANKS PUTS CITY WELL<lb />ON BLINK; CARE URGED<lb /><lb />Supply Short - Mayor Issues<lb />Warning - Every Drop Must Be<lb />Conserved If All Hands Are to<lb />Drink and Bathe With an over-<lb />zealous river full of it romping by,<lb />Kinston faces a serious shortage<lb />of water. oI wish to impress upon<lb />the public the need for scrupulous<lb />conservation of the supply, ?<lb />Mayor Dawson stated Saturday<lb /><lb />forenoon following notification<lb />by the Water and Light<lb />Department of the bursting of a<lb />pipe from a main well at the<lb />pumping station and damage to a<lb /><lb />reservoir there: by flood water<lb /><lb />from Neuse River.<lb /><lb />With the well out of<lb />commission possibly 30 percent<lb />of the supply is cut off, Mayor .<lb />Dawson said. Midway, the mules,<lb />wagon and car were swept off the<lb />dam into 15 feet of water.<lb /><lb />Nobles drowned. The mules<lb />were swept far down stream and<lb />broke loose from the wagon. One<lb />was drowned in a swamp. The<lb />other disappeared. Two negroes<lb />who were in the wagon were<lb />rescued from a tree by MC.<lb />Lassiter.<lb /><lb />Moccasin River rose 48 inches<lb />during 24 hours ending Saturday<lb />morning.<lb /><lb />July 28, 1919<lb /><lb />é<lb />At 3:30 o'clock Mondav Neuse<lb /><lb />River was about two inches above<lb />the high water mark of 1908. The<lb />stream had hung up a new record.<lb />It was still rising. Water was a<lb />foot deep over the Central<lb />Highway at one place. The stage<lb />now may be more than two Inches<lb />over 1908's high mark, but some<lb />persons say the tree that carries<lb />that mark has not grown in height.<lb /><lb />Kinsten Monday morning was<lb />a peninsula between the seas of<lb />water to the south and west of the<lb />city. Neuse River was within a<lb />few inches of the 1908 high water<lb />mark. The stream was rising<lb />rapidly.<lb /><lb />Damage to crops in inundated<lb />fields will aggregate many thou-<lb />sand dollars. oA hundred thou-<lb />sand won't touch it, ? according to<lb />some farmers. A quarter of a<lb />million dollars might not be too<lb />low an estimate, for thousands of<lb />acres are under water for many<lb />miles on either side of Kinston.<lb /><lb />Parrot Ts Park is completely<lb />submerged. Frame buildings<lb />there threaten to wash away. The<lb />two story brick residence and<lb />store of Mrs. Walter J. Redd at the<lb />west end of Caswell Street<lb />Bridge is an island in a broad<lb />expanse of water. The main road<lb />leading from the bridge is deep<lb />under water for a long distance. It<lb />was predicted Monday morning<lb />that the Central Highway would<lb />be submerged for a distance<lb />beyond the city. South of town the<lb />low grounds are covered. The<lb />water came over the oDam Road ?<lb />to a depth of three or four inches<lb />near the oIron Bridge ? Monday<lb />morning, and at 9:30 was<lb />lapping the bottom of the oSecond<lb />Slough Bridge. ?<lb /><lb />At Goldsboro and Seven<lb />Springs, the stream has exceeded<lb />the former record stage by<lb />feet. It is falling at Goldsboro.<lb />Whitehall Bridge, near Seven<lb />Springs, the stream has exceeded<lb />the former record stage by feet. It<lb /><lb />is falling at Goldsboro. Whitehall<lb />Bridge, near Seven Springs, is<lb />now en route to Kinston, unless it<lb />has broken up along the banks. It<lb />collapsed Sunday morning. Travel<lb />Halted<lb /><lb />The Norfolk Southern Railroad<lb />offices Monday said trains were<lb />making all points on the system,<lb />but that tickets were not being<lb />sold to northern points via<lb />Goldsboro. The Atlantic Coast<lb />Line people here had no informa-<lb />tion that trains had been sus-<lb />pended on the other side of<lb />Goldsboro, but said it was impos-<lb />sible to go farther than Greenville<lb />toward Parmale, where Plymouth,<lb />Rocky Mount and Washington<lb />connections are made. ;<lb /><lb />The bridge over the Tar at<lb /><lb />Greenville is weighted down to<lb />keep it from going down. The<lb />Norfolk Southern offices here<lb />understand that the A.C. L. bridge<lb />at Black Creek is down. Should<lb />the various streams fall consid-<lb />erably during the next 48 or 72<lb />hours, it may still be the end of<lb />the week before the bridges can<lb />be restored.<lb /><lb />Tar on a Rampage<lb /><lb />The Tar is supposed to be falling<lb />now. Some houses have floated<lb />away. For miles around that town<lb />the country is under water. Some<lb />stock is understood to have been<lb />lost. Boats are plying through<lb />fields. The situation in<lb />Edgecombe County probably is<lb />worse. than anywhere in the<lb />section. The Tar empties into<lb />Pamlico River at Washington.<lb />Effects of the flood will at the<lb />latter point be negligible. as they<lb />will at New Bern. near the mouth<lb />of the Neuse.<lb /><lb />Rapid Rise Here<lb /><lb />From 8 to 2 o'clock Sunday the<lb />Neuse rose to 10 1/4 inches.<lb />From 2 to 4 there was an increase<lb />of 3 1/4 inches. From 4 to 7 the<lb />stream gained 5 3/8 inches. At 8<lb />o'clock two inches more had been<lb />added...<lb /><lb />Crops Ruined<lb /><lb />Many farms are partly or wholly<lb />inundated. Houses may go down<lb />at spots. Planters in the vicinity<lb />of the city Monday estimated their<lb />losses in the thousands of dollars.<lb />R.F. Hill, declaring his loss com-<lb />paratively small, said the damage<lb />on his place would be at least<lb />$4000. There is almost no way of<lb />calculating the total damage, it<lb />may amount to a quarter of a<lb />million or even half a million<lb />dollars.<lb /><lb />Spectacle For Many<lb /><lb />Hundreds thronged Caswell Street<lb />Bridge Sunday to view the ram-<lb />pant stream. Where there had<lb />been dry land currents raced along<lb />at a6 mile clip. The west end of<lb />the bridge will probably be under<lb />water in a few hours. The crowds<lb />continued Monday.<lb /><lb />Little Loss of Life<lb /><lb />There has been little loss of life in<lb />the section so far. The only<lb />casualty reported here so far was<lb />Lt. David M. Prince, Jr, an Old<lb />Hickory veteran. Prince, who<lb />served with the 119th Infantry<lb />Overseas, attempted to save a<lb /><lb />child from the Neuse River at.<lb /><lb />Goldsboro The child threw her<lb />arms about Prince Ts neck and<lb />drew him under. He drowned.<lb />The child was rescued.<lb /><lb />July 29, 1919<lb />Knocked Out The Movies<lb /><lb />Most all of Kinston was on the .<lb />streets Monday night. The ice<lb />cream. places and soda fountains<lb />did a big business. The Grand<lb />Theater was closed. The moving<lb />picture films failed to get through.<lb /><lb />July 30, 1919<lb /><lb />Flood Water Nears Sea; All<lb />Streams are falling now Nervy<lb />Duplinites Walk Into Town Over<lb />Submerged Dam Road - Neuse<lb />Drops Half- Heartedly For Start<lb />But Surely Neuse River fell<lb />slowly Tuesday night, apparently<lb />about three inches. The stream<lb />was comparatively placid<lb />Wednesday morning.<lb />Experienced observers predict<lb />that a materiai fall will come<lb />within the next 48 hours and that<lb />much of the surplus water will<lb />be out of the river by Saturday<lb />night. These think the water will<lb />have receded from the inundated<lb />low grounds within 72 or 96<lb />hours. No additional reports of<lb />loss of life and stock have come.<lb /><lb />The declaration by Herbert<lb />Nobles of Greene County that his<lb />reported drowning did not occur<lb />reduces the number of human<lb />victims in this section to one.<lb />Local showers occurred Tuesday<lb />night, together with a big electri-<lb />cal display, but the rain had little<lb />effect upon the river, swollen by<lb />millions of tons of water from<lb />upstream. Wednesday failed to<lb />reduce the estimates of crop<lb />damage. and it appears that the<lb />loss from the flood will aggregate<lb />$250,000 to $500,000, with<lb />equally as much from the exces-<lb />sive rains.<lb /><lb />Wade Mile Through New Lake<lb /><lb />Three Duplin County men, two<lb /><lb />named Lee and one Stroud, waded<lb />from the Iron Bridge to Kinston<lb />Wednesday morning over the<lb />submerged Dam Road. They got<lb />to the bridge neighborhood and<lb />was ferried from the home of Mr.<lb />Sutton to the county home. From<lb />there they waded across the Iron<lb />Bridge and on into town.<lb /><lb />The Duplinites found the water<lb />deep at all points. Knee-deep or<lb />a little better was the limit. The<lb />rushing water tickling their shins<lb />was not nearly as vicious as it<lb />appeared. The semi-aquatic tromp<lb />was a cinch. The men found the<lb /> oslough bridges ? intact. There<lb />appeared to be some loose planks,<lb />but no material damage had been<lb />done, it appeared to them.<lb /><lb />Railroaders Breathe Freere<lb /><lb />Railroad men expect early return<lb />to normal conditions. There has<lb />been improvement at a number of<lb />points, although not all trains are<lb />making their fulll trips. Nearly<lb />everywhere in the section the<lb />rivers are falling. At Snow Hill<lb />the Moccassin is lowering rapidly.<lb /><lb />November 4, 1999<lb /><lb />RESIDENTS BEGIN RETURN<lb />TO PRINCEVILLE<lb /><lb />Princeville, NC Princeville resi-<lb />dents are now returning to the<lb />town in small numbers. The<lb />Buffalo Soldiers will help with the<lb />cleanup, the inventorying and<lb />distribution of donated goods, and<lb />other issues as needed. The group<lb />will be housed at the National<lb />Guard Armory in Tarboro for the<lb />duration of their stay.<lb /><lb />Youth are referred to<lb />VisionQuest by county or state<lb />government staff in corrections,<lb />probations, mental health, and<lb />child welfare. The name<lb />VisionQuest was borrowed from<lb />the Plains Indians and reflects the<lb />philosophy of the program.<lb /><lb />During a vision quest, Native |<lb /><lb />American adolescents were sent<lb />into the wilderness to overcome<lb /><lb />challenges and discover a view of<lb />their futures. VisionQuest pro-<lb />grams seek to give adjudicated<lb />youth this same opportunity to<lb />succeed in challenges, see a new<lb />future for themselves and give<lb />them skills to accomplish their<lb />goals and reach their highest<lb />potential.
