<lb />Tulsa, Okla. was the golden door<lb />of the Black community during<lb />the early 1900 Ts and it proved<lb />that African Americans had a<lb />successful infrastructure. That's<lb />what Black Wall Street was all<lb />about. During that era, physi-<lb />cians owned medical schools.<lb />The mainstay and mission of the<lb />community was to educate every<lb />child. When the average student<lb />went to school on Black Wall<lb />Street, he wore a suit and tie<lb />because of the morals and re-<lb />spect they were taught at a young<lb />age.?<lb /><lb />Some 76 years ago, Mary E.<lb />Parish or oAuntie Sweet, ? author<lb />of oRace Riot 1921, Events of the<lb />Tulsa Disaster, ? took upon herself<lb /> oto create a record that might<lb />serve to enlighten the minds of<lb />thinking people to the idea that<lb />there is value in diversity, and,<lb />that without understanding, with-<lb />out appreciation and compassion<lb />for one another, history will<lb />always repeat itself. ? Parish fur-<lb />ther wrote, oDuring my few<lb />months stay in Tulsa (Okla.)<lb />(from Rochester, NY), my eyes<lb />feasted on the progressive sights<lb />they beheld among our group<lb />(African Americans). Every face<lb />seemed to wear a happy smile.. ?<lb />Those smiles on all of those faces<lb />were unexpectedly distorted with<lb />grief that erupted from an incident<lb />in a downtown Tulsa hotel, May<lb />30, 1921. David Rowland, a<lb />bootblack and a Black man,<lb />entered an elevator and stepped<lb />on the toe of a White elevator girl.<lb />The incident was reported as an<lb />attempted rape. (Today, Black<lb />historians say they found out that<lb />the pair were lovers. He later was<lb />brought to trial and given his<lb />freedom: she failed to appear to<lb /><lb />testify against him. Some sites of these<lb />bones are known; some are not.<lb />But all of those bones, once<lb />covered with healthy Black flesh-<lb />light to dark, young and old,<lb />wealthy and not so, male and<lb />female-came from the mostly<lb />prosperous oNegroes ? who had<lb />lived in the Greenwood District in<lb />Tulsa Known at that time as oL Til<lb />Africa. ? <lb />of celebrating. "<lb />Oe 6 pak ae bs bone,<lb /><lb />we all enjoyed his birthday. But<lb />» some rather interesting thoughts<lb /><lb />game to mind as I watched him. I<lb />_ realized that this young man might<lb /><lb />. very well be the most valuable thing<lb />| can leave behind.<lb /><lb />Although this may seem mor-<lb />bid, we must all recognize that we<lb />will not live forever. At least not on<lb />this plane. And as far-fetched as it<lb />may seem, logic dictates we should<lb />make an attempt to make a positive<lb />impact on the world.<lb /><lb />As a matter of fact, we should put<lb />forth every conceivable effort to leave<lb />this world a better place than it was<lb />when we came. It won Tt be easy, but<lb />it can and should be done.<lb /><lb />We may very well write volume<lb />after important volume. We can<lb />make impressive speeches and draw<lb />attention to perceived greatness. In<lb />the end, however, all of this can be<lb />swept away by the tides of time and<lb />circumstance.<lb /><lb />Therefore, it seems reasonable<lb />that our most important project in<lb />this lifetime should be our progeny.<lb />Our children.<lb /><lb />Looking at the prevailing condi-<lb />tions of our society, it occurs to me<lb />that perhaps we have failed miser-<lb />ably.<lb /><lb />My son has evoked a special<lb />kind of pride in me. There were<lb />some times when I was not there for<lb />him and perhaps, there is a deep-<lb />seated anger or disappointment<lb />within him because of that.<lb /><lb />There have been some days when<lb />he angered me to the point that I<lb />screamed at him. And, in his<lb />younger years, I may have inflicted<lb />Some corporal punishment upon hi.<lb />In retrospect, I am not certain I<lb />would, or would want to, apologize<lb />to him for that.<lb /><lb />The bottom line however, is very<lb />simple. He grew into a responsible<lb />adult with responsible values and a<lb />strong will to make an impact upon<lb />his societal environment.<lb /><lb />Further, he is doing pretty much<lb />with his children what was done to<lb />him. He is calm, compassionate and<lb />fair. At the same time, he neither<lb />gives nor takes any quarter from his<lb />offspring. His is the final word<lb />where the children are concerned.<lb /><lb />Since my last<lb />piece on the<lb />Alameda Corridor and its failure to<lb />live up to local inclusion terms, there<lb />has been a omad ? scramble to refute<lb />truth and challenge othe source. ?<lb /><lb />The disclosure that the non-skills<lb />Job training component has been a<lb /> osham ? and that most of the con-<lb />tracts have been let to project area<lb />outsiders not interested in local hir-<lb />ing has been met by the Alameda<lb />Corridor Transportation Authority's<lb />effort to initiate a odamage control ?<lb />campaign. [t started with trying to<lb />assail the source of these osham ?<lb />revelations as omad. ? oHe Ts just mad<lb />because of what happened to him<lb />some years back, ? or oHe Ts just mad<lb />because he Ts trying to get wk, ? or<lb /> oHe Ts just mad, period. ?<lb /><lb />Unfounded allegations yive some<lb />real insights to the psyche of the<lb />players involved who are getting<lb />some real lessons in the purpose of<lb />public commentary and power of<lb />the black press. Also there have been<lb />some really interesting responses<lb />from a federally funded project on<lb />the verge of possible Congressional<lb />investigations and/or DOT audits.<lb />At least that Ts what some commu-<lb />nity interests are calling for. And,<lb />some federal representatives are lis-<lb />tening.<lb /><lb />The case won't be hard to prove,<lb />with $5 million allotted for training<lb />(much of which has yet to be ac-<lb />counted for) and few trained place-<lb />ments hired from the target area.<lb />Instead of trying to oright ? the<lb />wrongs that have been perpetuated<lb />to date in the $712 million project<lb />phase, the focus has been to rebut<lb />what is known as truth so far, failed<lb />community inclusion. So othe<lb /><lb />source ? asks, who really is mad?<lb /><lb />The main goal of opinion writers<lb />is to represent various aspects of<lb />public opinion, prevent policy mak-<lb />ers and powerful stakeholders from<lb />committing unpopular actions<lb />against an unknowing or defense-<lb />less public and make them react to<lb /> othe attentive public (those who<lb />watch government and private in-<lb />terest to prevent to the establish-<lb /><lb />if ¥<lb />eS Tate<lb /> oSUPER ee<lb /><lb />~ Rearing children is much like<lb /><lb />staying in a somewhat difficult re-<lb />. Ittakes commitment and<lb /><lb />~ hard work. It also takes a special<lb /><lb />kind of dedication to the cause, with<lb /><lb />the understanding that the lessons<lb />learned as. children follow - into<lb />adulthood. .<lb /><lb />The. great king Solomon spoke<lb />to the issue on at least two occa-<lb />sions. oTrain up a child in the way<lb />he should go and when he is old, he<lb />will not depart from it. ?<lb /><lb />This follows the adage, ? as a<lb />twig is bent, so shall it grow. ?<lb />Solomon was alleged to have been<lb />the wisest man in the world. This<lb />seems like pretty good evidence.<lb /><lb />This brings us back to the legacy<lb />concept. No matter what we do, we<lb />will ultimately be judged by the<lb />actions of our children. In days long<lb />since gone, we should be able to<lb />remember our mothers, chastising<lb />us and admonishing us for some<lb />misdeed. Almost everyone would<lb />say something like, oYou want folks<lb />to think you didn Tt have no home<lb />training? ?<lb /><lb />The grammar may not have been<lb />perfect, but the message was crys-<lb />tal clear. Our parents knew people<lb />would judge them by the actions of<lb />their children. That has not changed<lb />and it probably never will.<lb /><lb />Our children are the only people<lb />in the world who will love us, no<lb />matter what. This is not to say they<lb />will not be angry with us some time<lb />or disagree with our opinions. They<lb />still love us.<lb /><lb />My own father was the living<lb />definition of the word orascal. ? His<lb />deeds or rather his misdeeds are far<lb />too numerous to begin to enumer-<lb />ate. Still, he was my father and I<lb />loved him. My stepfather essentially<lb />reared me and I surely loved him.<lb />But at the same time, I loved my<lb />father because he was my father.<lb /><lb />We love our parents because of<lb />who, not what, they are. Because<lb />this is the case, we have a serious<lb />obligation to give them the best we<lb />have. Not the most, but the best.<lb /><lb />This transcends money and ma-<lb />terial things. Our children and their<lb />children will be here for genera-<lb />tions after we have died. That may<lb />not be a desirable word but it gives<lb />a clear and unobstructed view what<lb />lies ahead.<lb /><lb />From a religious perspective, we<lb />are promised everlasting life<lb /><lb />BETWEEN THE LINES<lb />Alameda Corridor-Round a: Confessions of a oMad ? To keep those who<lb />would compromise the will of the<lb />people from compromising the press<lb />and opinion maker's ability to pub-<lb />licly discuss private actions that af-<lb />fect public interest.<lb /><lb />Editorialists are journalists in the<lb />sense that the facts surrounding a<lb />public issue must be accurate and<lb />credible. But, editorialists are not<lb />like journalists inasmuch as they<lb />don Tt have to present both sides of<lb />an issue. They can pick a side and<lb />advance their position. We have to recognize the<lb />seriousness of the matter and un-<lb /><lb />derstand and we cannot allow them<lb /><lb />to rear themselves. .<lb />If they were capable of doing<lb />that, then birth would take place at<lb /><lb />age of 21 and they foal not<lb /><lb />poe re dy crear<lb />of their parents.<lb /><lb />Thope I have given my son all he<lb />needs to cope with the world. I also<lb />hope Ihave instilled enough oright ?<lb />in him for him to withstand all of<lb />the pressures of life.<lb /><lb />Whatever the case, I am proud<lb />of him and I hope his son makes<lb />him as proud as he has made me.<lb /><lb />Part 2<lb />Race vs class was, and is, a<lb />major issue for the foreseeable future. Author,<lb />Clarence Page, addresses the race card vs the<lb />class card in his essay. Showing My Color:<lb />Impolite Essays on Race and Identity.<lb /><lb />Page is amused whenever Republicans de-<lb />nounce Democrats for waging oclass warfare, ?<lb />because their complaint only acknowledges the<lb />power class holds as a strategic issue for Demo-<lb />crats, comparable to the power of race for Re-<lb />publicans.<lb /><lb />Both are delicate issues, yet effective appeals<lb />to class consciousness, suspicions and resent-<lb />ments win elections. This only shows that the<lb />GOP knows what the game really is.<lb /><lb />In his first campaign, Bill Clinton showed<lb />himself to be a tireless campaigner and an excel-<lb />lent student of what wins. Clinton appealed<lb />directly to the oforgotten middle class ? "the<lb />big group in the middle that was feeling left out<lb />of Reagan-Bush era bonanzas for the wealthy<lb />and Democratic reforms for minorities and the<lb />poor. :<lb /><lb />For better or worse, effective politics is often<lb />nothing more than an effective appeal to the<lb />resentment of those who vote in large numbers,<lb />directed against a target group that doesn Tt.<lb /><lb />A reputation for soaking the poor doomed<lb />Republican hopes in elections in which the poor,<lb />or those who view themselves as poor, outnum-<lb />bered those who saw themselves as rich. In fact,<lb />polls show that 90 percent of Americans view<lb />themselves as midle-class, giving America the<lb />largest middle-class the world has ever known.<lb />Here, as in most issues, politics is a manipula-<lb />tive interplay on perceptions.<lb /><lb />If many white middle-class voters (in 1992)<lb />failed to see Democrats as caring about them<lb />anymore, even though the largest share of fed-<lb />cral spending continues to go to middle-class<lb />entitlements such as Social Security and Medi-<lb />care, it was largely because conservatives per-<lb />suaded significant numbers of whites that gov-<lb />ernment spending was generally being wasted,<lb />mostly on blacks.<lb /><lb />The voice of the oangry white male, ? who<lb />would constitute the decisive, pivotal vote in the<lb /><lb />URBAN PERSPECTIVE OR vam mmRY cesses:<lb />Examining the Race Card vs. the Class Card<lb /><lb />Republican landslide of 1994, could be heard in<lb />the voice of a Chicago carpenter interviewed at<lb />the campaign headquarters of a GOP state sena-<lb />tor in 1988. o ... You could classify me as a<lb />working-class Democrat, a card-carrying union<lb />member. I Tm not a card-carrying Republican<lb />yet. ... We have four or five generations of<lb />welfare mothers ... but somebody has got to help<lb />themselves. ... When you try to pick somebody<lb />up, they have to help. ... Most of the people who<lb />need help in this situation are black and most of<lb />the people who are doing the helping are white.<lb />... They hate it because they are paying for black<lb />schools that aren't even educating kids and the<lb />money is just going to the board of education<lb />and the teachers T union. ?<lb /><lb />This voice echoed across the nation and was<lb />picked up in the early 1990s by a wave of<lb />conservative talk radio programs, spreading the<lb />word that whites were always giving and the<lb />blacks were always taking and the liberal elites<lb />were overseeing it all.<lb /><lb />Clarence Page believes that it is now clearer<lb />than ever that behind middle-class anger, whether<lb />itis directed against blacks or taxes, is a greater<lb />problem afflicting the group. It is the vast num-<lb />bers of Americans who see and feel a growing<lb />divide between rich and poor, skilled and un-<lb />skilled, the secure and the insecure in post-<lb />industrial America. This middle-class anxiety<lb />explains why party loyalty shrunk to record<lb />lows by the mid-1990s and the urge to find<lb />alternatives soared. Three years after Doug<lb />Wilder Ts rebuff in New Hampshire, America<lb />had a new great black hope. His name is Colin<lb />Powell.<lb /><lb />Powell emerged as the front-runner in all<lb />demographic, political and ideological groups "<lb />male, female, white, minority, liberal, conserva-<lb />tive, Democrat and Republican "well ahead of<lb />the declared field. His emergence benefitted<lb /><lb />from a national yearning for heroes and ooutsid-<lb /><lb />. ? Perhaps most significantly, he embodied<lb />more than any other black celebrity the nation Ts<lb />yearning to transcend its agony over race, ac-<lb />cording to Clarence Page.<lb /><lb />Unlike Jesse Jackson, Powell was introduced<lb />to the public eye without mention of race. Media<lb /><lb />SDR Been ged ?<lb /><lb />stories played down his race and played up the<lb />popular ouniversals ? in his life, images that<lb />touched on cherished all-American values. For<lb />years, he was seen conferring confidently, au-<lb />thoritatively (and this was very important), non-<lb />threateningly in the inner circle of advisers to<lb />Presidents Reagan and Bush. Not only did he<lb />walk, talk and behave like one of the boys, but he<lb />also looked like the smartest guy in the room.<lb />Desert Storm reinforced his status as an all-<lb />right, all-American leader.<lb /><lb />Americans became so invested in the notion<lb />of Colin Powell as a black man who had made it<lb />on merit and merit alone despite his racial as-<lb />signment to society's lowest caste, confirming<lb />the durable goodness of the American Dream,<lb />that he actually appeared to have turned race<lb />into an advantage.<lb /><lb />National polling supports that point: Powell Ts<lb />race in some polls actually magnified his politi-<lb />cal strength. When whites of all ideological<lb />Stripes encounter an individual black person<lb />whose character refutes negative racial stereo-<lb />types, otheir response is to respond even more<lb />positively to him, ? according to a Stanford po-<lb />litical scientist. In other words, white voters will<lb />vote for a black who is not too black in the sense<lb />of their stereotypes about blackness. Powell fit<lb />that bill.<lb /><lb />All of this worked in Powell Ts favor as the<lb />right man at the right time. For many Americans,<lb />he helped confirm that America T fabled<lb />meritocracy still works. Nonetheless, there was<lb />a lesson in all of this for crossover candidates<lb />everywhere. White people are more open to<lb />voting for a black candidate than ever before.<lb />But to win the white votes, it is still necessary,<lb />first of all, to ease white guilt. Also, it is not<lb />essential to be so conservative that you alienate<lb />much of the black mainstream, but it doesn Tt<lb />hurt.<lb /><lb />As long as race remains an America dilemma,<lb />it will play a salient role in American politics.<lb />Americans of all races need to learn who their<lb />real enemies are. It is those who use race as a<lb />smokescreen to hide deeper agonies over class,<lb />according to Clarence Page.<lb /><lb />change in favor of the people taken<lb />advantage of.<lb /><lb />As a businessman, I assess pub-<lb />lic policy and political economies<lb />of underserved communities nation-<lb />wide.<lb /><lb />I know improperly implemented<lb /><lb />government) contracting when I see<lb />it because I see it. because I do it for<lb />a living (for those of you that think<lb />I just write articles)<lb /><lb />As an activist, journalist and is-<lb />sucs strategist to T many<lb />policymakers and agencies, my in-<lb />formation sources run long and<lb />deep. It<lb />was a black columnist with the Pitts-<lb />burgh Courier that broke the story<lb />that Jackie Robinson was being court<lb />martialed. on trumped-up orace ?<lb />charges. Maybe you don't<lb />agree with them on some things,<lb />but you can find a lot of other<lb />things in common with them. It<lb />may stretch you a little, but you<lb />can be friends with everyone;<lb />and you'll be a bigger person by<lb />including everyone as your<lb />friend.<lb /><lb />Your closest friends will be<lb />those with whom you have most<lb /><lb />in common. There are a lot of<lb />people who think as you do<lb />about things, and many others<lb />who think enough like you to<lb />still be fairly close to you. These<lb />two groups will form the two<lb />inner circles of friends. Then<lb />will come many other circles<lb />outside of that, until everyone<lb />fits somewhere into the orbits of<lb />your friendships.<lb /><lb />To Reduce Sodium:<lb /><lb />Recommended: fresh vegeta-<lb />bles, fresh fruits, lean meats,<lb />fresh fish, unsalted margarine's,<lb />low-sodium breads and saltwater<lb />fish<lb /><lb />Use Sparingly: canned vegeta-<lb />bles, soups, snacks; luncheon<lb />meats, shellfish, dairy products,<lb />crackers, pretzels; and smoked<lb />fish.<lb /><lb />WILL A MAN ROB GOD?<lb /><lb />Everyone receives an equal<lb />supply of time. The only<lb />difference between us/in the<lb />way we spend it. Each week<lb />brings us 168 golden hours. We<lb />spend approximately 56 hours<lb />for sleep and recuperation. We<lb />spend approximately 28 hours<lb />for eating and personal duties.<lb />We spend approximately 40 to<lb />50 hours for earning a living. We<lb />have 30 to 40 hours left to spend<lb />Just as we wish. But how do we<lb />spend them? How many hours<lb />for recreation? How many hours<lb />for family fellowship? How<lb />many hours for the regular<lb /><lb />worship of God? How many<lb />hours for personal service in the<lb />name of Christ? Will a man rob<lb />God? He can; and he does.<lb />perhaps we may be very busy<lb />with good things, yet be too busy<lb />for the best things. As an adult professional, I thought<lb />that I did not need to go for etiquette training, so, I sent my teenage<lb />daughter, Letitia. When she came home and raved about the experi-<lb />ence, I knew that I must attend also. In your class you mentioned the<lb />ten most common dining mistakes. Would you please print them to<lb />share with all that read your column? Thank you. Letitia Ts Mom.<lb /><lb />ANSWER: Dear Letitia Ts Mom: I am happy that you enjoyed<lb />the etiquette training. Your daughter was delightful and she is now<lb />equipped to handle issues of etiquette with grace and ease. The most<lb />ten common dining mistakes are as follows:<lb /><lb />1. Cutlery: Don Tt hold your fork like a cello or your knife like<lb />a dagger. Also don Tt wave your cutlery in the air to emphasize a point<lb />and don Tt put silverware partly on the table and partly on the plate.<lb />Once you pick up a piece of cutlery, it should never touch the table<lb />again. Knives go on the plate. Only the handle should rest on the rim<lb /><lb />2. Napkins: Don Tt blot or rub the lower half of your face. Dab<lb />delicately. Don Tt flap your napkin to unfold it, and don Tt wave it<lb />around like a flag. It belongs unfolded on your lap. If you leave the<lb />table, place the napkin on the chair and push the chair back under the<lb />table, gently. Don Tt refold your napkin at the end of the meal:<lb />otherwise, an unknowing server might give it to another diner. Pick<lb />it up from the center and place it loosely on the table to the left of your<lb /><lb />3. Chewing: Never chew with your mouth open. Also, no<lb />matter how urgently you want to inject the perfect bit of wit and<lb />wisdom at just the right moment, don Tt do it with food in your mouth.<lb />And don Tt gulp or blurt. Finish chewing, swallow, and smile philo-<lb />sophically, content in the knowledge that you could have said just the<lb />right thing, but had too much class to speak with food in your mouth.<lb /><lb />4. Appearance: Remember what your mother said. Sit up<lb />straight. Keep your elbows off the table. If you have any doubt about<lb />where your hands belong, put them in your lap.<lb /><lb />5. Breaking bread: This is a real bread-and-butter tip. Tear<lb />bread into bite-size pieces and butter each piece just before you eat.<lb />Don Tt butter the entire slice of bread or the entire roll to get it ready<lb />for occasional bites during the course of the meal.<lb /><lb />6. Speed: Take it easy. Gulping down food, whether you are<lb />at the Ritz Carlton or Burger King, it is not only unhealthy but<lb />unattractive. It can cross the line into rudeness when dining with<lb />others. Dining partners should have the same number of courses and<lb />start and finish each at about the same time. And it Ts just as bad to<lb />huddle over soup while others are anxiously waiting for their<lb /><lb />7. Being Picky: If you have something trapped between<lb />your teeth, don Tt pick at it while at the table. If it Ts really driving<lb />you nuts, excuse yourself from the table, go to the restroom, and<lb /><lb />8. Lipstick: It Ts bad form, especially at a business meal, to<lb />leave a lipstick trail behind. If you do not have blotting tissue<lb />with you, make a detour to the restroom as you enter the restau-<lb />rant or nab acocktail napkin from the bar on yoyr way to the table.<lb /><lb />9. Blowing your nose at the table: Don Tt do it. Excuse<lb /><lb />10. Purses, briefcases. Keep them off the table. And this<lb />goes for keys, hats, gloves, eyeglasses, eyeglass cases, and ciga-<lb />rette packs. In short, if it isn Tt part of the meal, it shouldn Tt be on<lb /><lb />If you have any questions about etiquette or any dilemma,<lb />please write to Ms. Etiquette, C/O The Los Angeles Sentinel,<lb />Family Section, 3800 S. It used to<lb />go something like this oBaseball,<lb />apple pie, and Chevrolet: the<lb />all-American way ? while show-<lb />ing hard working middle class<lb />people enjoying life, hanging<lb />around a: baseball field eating<lb />apple pie leaning on their new<lb />Chevy truck. The commercial<lb />was supposed to give the viewer<lb />a feeling of Freedom (while also<lb />making the viewer more eager to<lb />buy a Chevy truck). Not me, |<lb />was very young in the mid 80 Ts<lb />and all | understood was car-<lb />toons, that apple pie was good to<lb />eat, and that Chevy trucks and<lb />baseball were very big deals to<lb />the oold people".<lb /><lb />I also remember feeling very<lb />confused watching these com-<lb />mercials. Was I not all-<lb />American? Was only thinking<lb />apple pie was delicious not<lb />enough to classify me and my<lb />family? Did we not count?<lb /><lb />We didn't eat that much apple<lb />pie, we didn't have a truck, let<lb />alone park our truck in a base-<lb />ball field while eating apple pie<lb />along with other families doing<lb />the same.<lb /><lb />Don't get me wrong, it looked<lb />like fun. But, just because there<lb />was no abundance of apple pies.<lb />Chevy trucks or baseball fields.<lb />didn't mean | was missing out on<lb />anything less than special. What<lb />was special to me were cookouts<lb />at my own house with my own<lb />grandmothers cooking (No apple<lb />pies but delicious apple dump-<lb /><lb />lings) with my own family's car<lb />(nothing nice. but it got us where<lb />we needed to go). | also enjoved<lb />being in the yard playing base-<lb />ball with my brother while<lb />listening to old School rap and<lb />even older R&B (Family re-<lb />quested). These were good<lb />times. special times to me.<lb />Sometimes I just wanted to do it<lb />how they did it on the commer-<lb />clals: The so-called " all-<lb />American way of living.<lb /><lb />| was just like any other kid. |<lb />saw something on television and<lb />I wanted it. | wanted to be what<lb />| thought (and what they taught)<lb /><lb />Lad<lb /><lb />m or Free<lb /><lb />~ That's what toy call<lb /><lb />was free.<lb />I wanted it more and more each<lb />time. I loved baseball. |<lb />loved apple pie, and | knew |<lb />would love that freedom.<lb /><lb />Now, its. 1999 and those com-<lb />mercials have faded away,<lb />Unfortunately, so have my feel-<lb />ings for that same freedom |<lb />thought I wanted so badly.<lb /><lb />The world has changed, and so<lb />have I for the better or for the<lb />worse?<lb /><lb />Is it freedom still or is it<lb /><lb />freedumb? These days the base-<lb />ball players the oOlder people ?<lb />I use to love have changed, and<lb />the game | grew to love has<lb />changed as well.<lb />Here in 1999 a lot of baseball<lb />players have become greedy<lb />multi-million dollar - making<lb />egotistical men, Their love for<lb />the game and the fans who love<lb />them are now questioned by the<lb />amount of money they make.<lb /><lb />Every few years since the mid<lb />80°s players threaten to go on<lb />strike T because the millions of<lb />dollars they make as well as the<lb />millions of kids hoping to see<lb />them play on T.V. isn't enough<lb />for them, so they refuse to play<lb />unless they get paid even more<lb />money.<lb /><lb />These days so called all-<lb />American players even get paid<lb />to be on strike, now that's what<lb />I call being greedy, but that's<lb />what they éall freedom and that's<lb />what our children may think<lb />freedom is. too.<lb /><lb />Good old-fashioned apple pie is<lb />no longer considered _ all-<lb /><lb />American anymore either. These<lb />days it is too fattening ? or has<lb /> oToo much sugar ? to be<lb />Americas dessert of choice. Not<lb />all apple pies however, now they<lb />make non-sugar nonfat apple<lb />pies and try to make us believe<lb />that they are the thing to eat.<lb />They may not be fulfilling to our<lb />taste buds in fact they taste like<lb />rubber and with sweetener on<lb />top. But they are suppose to be<lb />filling to our stomach and to our<lb />needs of doing everything the<lb />all-American way. That's what |<lb />call starvation and deprivation to<lb />be ofat free ? like everybody else.<lb /><lb />ol Soul<lb /><lb />19S Gt<lb /><lb />and that's what our<lb />think freedom is, too. =<lb />In the commercials the word<lb />inexpensive kept flashing on the _<lb />screen and | knew that expen-<lb />sive was not a good word, "<lb />(Grandmother never used that<lb />word in a happy tone) so J<lb />thought inexpensive must be 4<lb />good thing.<lb />Well, these days inexpensive<lb />flashing on the screen has turned<lb />into expensive and flashy. Very<lb />big sport-utility vehicles with ;<lb />very big accessories are very big<lb />deals now and seem to be the<lb />all-American way. That's what I<lb />call unnecessary. But, that's what<lb />they call fully loaded freedom,<lb />and that's what our children<lb />think freedom is too.<lb />Maybe me need to pay attention<lb />to our children more and not so<lb />much attention to our vehicles.
