When questioned by<lb />police, Mr. Mazeb admitted fighting<lb />with Mr. Porter, hitting<lb /><lb />him with the tire iron and throwing<lb />more punches as the man lay on the<lb />ground. But according to police,<lb />Mr. Altam said Mr.Porter provoked<lb />the incident "for no reason," using<lb />the stick. Then, Mr. Mazeb wrestled<lb />Mr. Porter to the ground and held<lb />him, according to Mr. Altam's<lb />statements,<lb />reported by police. The suspects T<lb />attorney,<lb />himself a witness, said the killing<lb />was self defense.<lb /><lb />State Rep. Ed Vaughn called the<lb />death"tragic" and the result of<lb />racist attitudes in the<lb /><lb />lavks and local Arab merchants<lb /><lb />Chaldean/Arab community. "The<lb />vast majority of food and beverage<lb />stores in the city are owned by<lb />Chaldeans and in recent years other<lb />Arabs. Most of them have never<lb />attempted to make inroads into the<lb />Black community. They don't care<lb />about Black folks and don't want<lb />anything to do with us except to<lb />take our money" said Rep.<lb />Vaughn."I believe the killing was<lb />racially motivated and needs to be<lb />investigated by the Justice<lb />Department as a hate crime. The<lb />disrespect of African Americans by<lb />Chaldeans<lb /><lb />and the Arab community has been<lb />an ongoing problem; it's not new, ?<lb />commented<lb /><lb />activist Joe Madison, former execu-<lb />tive director of the Detroit<lb />NAACP.Detroit has one of the<lb />largestArab populations outside of<lb />the Middle East with more<lb /><lb />than 200,000 people. After the 1967<lb />riots,Arab Americans gained a foot-<lb />hold in ownership of inner-city<lb />stores, replacing fleeing white and<lb />Jewish store owners. Most of the<lb />Arab store owners are Chaldeans<lb />from Iraq.<lb /><lb />Arab American business leader<lb />Ed Deeb called the killing a tragedy,<lb />but not a racial incident.<lb /><lb />"There are cultural differences<lb />and the men involved were from<lb />Yemen, so there was a problem with<lb />language ? he said. Mr.Deeb helped<lb />organize a community meeting<lb />along with the Michigan Food and<lb />Bev erage Association and the<lb />Detroit police department in an<lb />effort to calm an angryBlack com-<lb />munity.<lb /><lb />According to Mr. Deeb, 70 percent<lb />of stores in Detroit proper are<lb />Arab-owned,with 52 percent Arab<lb />ownership in the sur-<lb />rounding areas. Many Detroit<lb />Blacks accuse Arab business<lb /><lb />Min Farrakhan addressed the<lb />problem of disrespect of Blacks<lb />and the need for properbehavior<lb />last November, during an address<lb />to a predominantly Arab audi-<lb />ence at the Islamic Center in<lb />Dearborn, Mich.<lb /><lb />-Mm. Some activists report<lb />serious incidents of beatings of<lb />Black customers suspected of<lb />stealing by store employees, sales of<lb />cigarettes to children and sexual<lb />harassment of Black women. "We<lb />need to stop spending money with<lb />people and companies who are not<lb />serving us and who undervalue our<lb />lives.<lb />"We need an organized effort to<lb />send a message to merchants; T said<lb />Rev. Wendell Anthony, Detroit<lb />NAACP executive director. Rev.<lb />Anthony felt it was premature to<lb />call the killing racially motivated.<lb /><lb />The NAACP has joined a<lb /><lb />coalition of " Arab/Chaldean<lb />American and Black groups formed<lb />as a response to the death. The coa<lb />lition includes the American-Arab<lb />Anti-Discrimination Committee, the<lb />Urban League, New Detroit, Inc.,<lb />the Muslim Center, the Arab-<lb />American Chamber of Commerce<lb />and several others. The group plans<lb /><lb />to promote a code of conduct for<lb />merchants, training for store em-<lb />ployees, and greater access to<lb />capital and more business opportu-<lb />nities for Blacks. oIt is obvious that<lb />the relationship between Blacks and<lb />Arab people is not an ideal one;<lb />noted Mm. Dawud Muhammad, of<lb />the Nation of Islam. He felt it was<lb />too early to<lb /><lb />label the death as racially moti-<lb />vated. But, Mm. Dawud added,<lb /><lb />the Hon. Louis Farrakhan ad-<lb />dressed the problem of disrespect of<lb />Blacks and the need for proper be<lb /><lb /> havior jast November, during an<lb /><lb />address to a predominantly Arab<lb />audience at the Is lamic Center in<lb />Dearborn, Mich. Dawud, who oversees Detroit's<lb />Muhammad Mosque No. 1. Mm.<lb />Dawud also said he has spoken with<lb />Ms. Wright, offering condolences<lb />and what ever assistance that she<lb />might need.<lb /><lb />Rep. Rep. McAllister is<lb />part of a growing number of<lb />Black elected leaders nationwide<lb />encouraging the use of public<lb />policy as a tool to break down<lb />economic injustice and stimulate<lb />community development - this is<lb />key to the growth of black owned<lb />businesses. It is vital that all<lb />businesses be responsive to the<lb />minority market. "It's past time<lb />businesses black and white show<lb /><lb />appreciation and awareness of<lb />black publishers by purchasing<lb />advertising in their newspapers.<lb /><lb />Print media is an awesome<lb />weapon at our disposal!"<lb />McAllister continued. America<lb /><lb />has an emerging middle class and<lb />doing business with black news-<lb />papers makes sound business<lb />sense. Black capitalism is clearly<lb />the next logical move for the<lb />black minority in America.<lb />Black publishers have played a<lb />crucial role in the emergence of<lb />African American " businesses<lb />and leadership) = and_ "_ will<lb />continue to do so in the future<lb /><lb />Black leaders cannot continue<lb />to ignore the clear message<lb />that in order for black<lb /><lb />businesses to survive they must be<lb /><lb />able to withstand a thorough<lb />public audit that will occur in<lb />the printed news. Black<lb />newspapers can. verify that<lb />African American businesses and<lb />advertisers in black newspapers<lb />are getting tangible, quantifiable<lb />results. "The black press has<lb />functioned as the crusading press<lb />for too long without being suffi-<lb />ciently compensated"<lb />McAllister concluded.<lb /><lb />Black publications have been<lb />operating since 1927. The orbit and spin<lb />were believed to be correct.<lb /><lb />The satellite was developed<lb />under a NASA program to<lb />increase students T access to<lb />space. More than 60 students<lb />and faculty members worked<lb />on the mission since 1995,<lb /><lb />since yesterday,.<lb /><lb />Terriers, carrying instruments<lb />to produce 3-D images of the<lb />ionosphere, cost $6.1 million.<lb />Its share of launch costs<lb />amounted to $6.2 million.<lb /><lb />Terriers and a separate de-<lb />fense communications satel-<lb />lite named Mublcom were<lb />launched late Monday on an<lb />Orbital Sciences Corp.<lb />Pegasus rocket dropped from<lb />a modified L-1011 jet flying<lb />off the California coast.<lb /><lb />All seemed well when the<lb />274-pound Terriers made its<lb />first pass over the Boston<lb />University ground station at<lb />7:07 a.m. EDT Tuesday. The launch was the<lb /><lb />27th of a Pegasus. There have<lb />been only three failures, the<lb />last in 1996. There have been<lb />13 launches since 1997.<lb /><lb />The Pegasus is carried by the<lb />L-1011 to altitudes around<lb />40,000 feet. The rocket then<lb />drops for a few seconds before<lb />its first stage ignites.<lb /><lb />Terriers was the latest small<lb />NASA satellite to run into<lb />trouble.<lb /><lb />In March, the $73 million<lb />Wide-Field Infrared Explorer<lb />satellite spun out of control on<lb />its second orbit. The fatal spin<lb />involved the unexpected vent-<lb />ing of frozen hydrogen in-<lb />tended to cool the instrument.<lb /><lb />In 1997, the $64.8 million<lb />Lewis satellite was lost within<lb />days of launch on what was<lb />supposed to be a five-year<lb />mission of hyperspectral im-<lb />aging of Earth. It also began<lb />spinning, apparently due to<lb />excessive firing of an attitude-<lb />control thruster.<lb /><lb />The problem also comes amid<lb />wider problems in the nation's<lb />space capability. In less than<lb />nine months six launch fail-<lb />ures have wrecked missions<lb />involving three military satel-<lb />lites, two commercial commu-<lb />nication satellites and a<lb />private Earth-imaging satel-<lb />lite.<lb /><lb />Terriers was worked on for<lb />three years in a clean room at<lb />the university's College of<lb />Arts and Sciences, and a<lb />ground station was estab-<lb />lished there so students could<lb />control the craft as it gathered<lb />data on the ionosphere, the<lb />region of electrically charged<lb />gases in the upper atmos-<lb />phere.<lb /><lb />Scientists want to study how<lb />changes in the ionosphere af-<lb />fect global communications.<lb />The ionosphere is affected by<lb />solar activity, which can cause<lb />disruptions in communica-<lb />tions on Earth.<lb /><lb />READ<lb />THI<lb /><lb />M<lb /><lb />O11 @ a<lb /><lb />IT'S<lb />THE<lb />NEWS<lb />THAT<lb /><lb />YOI<lb /><lb />lal lB<lb />IQ)<lb />KNOW<lb /><lb />Read : It Expands your Min<lb /><lb />Fonsi CITIZENS BANK<lb /><lb />BUSINESS BANKING<lb /><lb />-Business Quest ?<lb /><lb /> "-Equipment Leasing<lb /><lb />-Sweep Accounts<lb /><lb />-Capital Line of Credit<lb /><lb />-Business Express ?-Internet Banking<lb />-Business Credit Card with CardMiles*<lb /><lb />www.firstcitizens.com<lb /><lb />1-888-FC DIRECT<lb />(1-888-323-4732)<lb /><lb />Member FDIC.<lb /><lb /> oFirst Citizens doesn Tt<lb />just want to be your<lb />bank, they want to be a<lb /><lb />part of your team. ?<lb /><lb />Pro<lb />Solaition,<lb /><lb />For more than 10 years, Progressive<lb />Business Solutions has provided custom<lb />business forms, commercial printing,<lb />computer supplies and promotional<lb />items for a lot of other companies.<lb /><lb />With First Citizens Bank, Tim Catlett<lb />not only has access to a sound financial<lb />institution, but also has an additional<lb />corporate member on his staff.<lb /><lb /> oFirst Citizens doesn Tt just want to<lb />be your bank, they want to be a part of<lb />your team. The<lb />Book of Acts records how<lb />spiritual gifts were given by<lb />the laying on of hands<lb /><lb />Jesus used the laying on of<lb />hands more than any other<lb />action to bring healing to<lb />people with all Kinds of dis-<lb />eases and infirmities. When<lb />children were brought to him<lb />, he laid hands on them and<lb />blessed them (Matthew<lb />19:13) we read in Luke 13:13<lb />that when a woman with a<lb />spirit of infirmity came to<lb />Jesus, He laid hands on her<lb />and said, oWoman, thou art<lb />loosed from thine infirmity.<lb />The key to the power released<lb />in the laying on hands is<lb />simply to put our faith to work<lb />(James 2:17-22,26). It is this<lb />kind of faith in action that<lb />raised the daughter of Jairus<lb />from the dead. This ruler of of<lb />a symagogue came to Jesus<lb />and plead, oplease , come and<lb />lay your hands on her, that she<lb /><lb />may be healed and she shall<lb />live. Jesus went to Jairus<lb />house, and on the way word<lb />came that the child had al-<lb />ready died. Jesus calmly said<lb /> oDon Tt be afraid only be-<lb />lieve. ? He stood by the child Ts<lb />bedside, took her hand and<lb />commanded, oDamsel, | say<lb />unto thee, arise ? The crowd of<lb />people outside the home was<lb />astonished as the child stood<lb />up and walked around the<lb />room. But Jairus wasn Tt sur-<lb />prised at all he had focused his<lb />faith on Jesus and believed in<lb />his heart that oWhen Jesus<lb />lays hands on her she she shall<lb />live ?<lb />This laying of hands is a<lb />consistent act in my ministry<lb />Aside from healing and<lb />delivering, each Sunday<lb />morning Lay hands on every<lb />child and every adults they<lb />come to the table of tithes and<lb />offerings.
