"People unknowingly<lb />incur huge fees and may ultimately<lb />lose their homes."<lb />The Senate bill (SB 1149) is<lb />nsored by Sen. Roy Cooper and<lb />e companion House bill (HB<lb /><lb />Empowerment: Dr. Lenora<lb />Fulani discusses women and<lb />the run for the Presidency<lb /><lb />Rosa Parks gets the gold! 1285) is cosponsored by Rep. Althou<lb />good deal for the broker, say Easley, "it may not be a g<lb />(photo by the Office of the NC Attorney General.)<lb /><lb />it may be a<lb />deal for you."<lb /><lb />1) A borrower in Fayetteville<lb />obtained a $48,000 home loan<lb />which included a $4352 origination<lb />fee, $1089 .in points, a $200<lb /><lb />ing fee; a $175 underwrit-<lb />ing fee and a $175  odocument<lb />rep" fee. The APR on the loan was<lb />10%. The loan also included a<lb />balloon payment of $43,000 which<lb />would be due after 15 years of<lb />payments. The borrower did not<lb />understand there was a balloon<lb />payment until months after the<lb />closing. To complete the financing,<lb />the lender also convinced this<lb />borrower to take out a $13,000<lb />second mortgage loan repayable<lb />over 15 years at 14%.<lb /><lb />2) An elderly woman on a<lb />limited income nded to a TV<lb />ad about consolidating bills and<lb />lowering monthly payments. Her<lb />new loan increased her monthly<lb />mortgage payment from $399 to<lb />$462. On the $33,800 loan, she<lb />paid over 8% in points and<lb />originating fees plus a $500 under-<lb />writing fee, a $400 application fee<lb />and a $350 loan processing fee.<lb /><lb />"The APR was 16.46%. Although<lb /><lb />the borrower was not aware of it,<lb />the loan had a balloon t of<lb />$35,000 at the end of the 15 year<lb />term. Her sister was required to<lb />cosign the loan at the last minute.<lb />3) A couple in Montgomery<lb /><lb />County borrowed $19,254 to refi-<lb />nance an existin mortgage loan<lb />and to pay other debts. They paid a<lb />loan origination fee of $2,790 and<lb />an additional  oloan fee" of $370.<lb />The lender also sold and financed a<lb /><lb />credit life insurance premium in<lb />the amount of $4,124. With the<lb />closing costs and credit insurance<lb />factored in, the borrowers incurred<lb />an obligation of $28,000 for what<lb />siarted out as a $19,000 loan.<lb /><lb />Predatory lenders often use high<lb />pressure tactics to snag their vic-<lb />tims. Easley warns homeowners to<lb />be wary of anyone who calls them<lb /><lb />_ on the phone or comes to your door<lb /><lb />offering home equity  obargains. <lb /><lb />"Don't let yourself be pressured<lb />into making a quick decision when<lb />it comes to your home," Easley<lb />said. "Beware of claims that ar<lb />offer is good only for a very short<lb />period. Be suspicious of anyone you<lb />didn't contact first. If a solicitor<lb />calls on the phone or comes to your<lb />door offering to refinance your<lb />home, you can be assured it's a<lb />good deal for him. It may not be a<lb />good deal for you. <lb /><lb />The legislation attacks predatory<lb />lending by creating a special<lb />category in the state's lending laws<lb />for "high cost home loans," making<lb />North Carolina the first state to<lb /><lb />seriously address this problem. If<lb />the loan has fees or a rate that<lb />significantly exceed prevailing<lb />market rates, then special restric-<lb />tions and protections apply. These<lb />new provisions are intended to<lb />make borrowers more aware of the<lb />consequences of high cost home<lb />loans and to create barriers to<lb />prevent predatory practices.<lb /><lb />A list of other schools in recent<lb />years that have suffered from<lb />well-publicized acts of violence<lb /><lb />Ascending Star: Finding out<lb /><lb />WTOW 1320-AM<lb /><lb />returns<lb /><lb />about an up and coming leader! |<lb /><lb />From the Desk of Mrs.<lb />Beatrice Maye: Mrs. Maye<lb />gives Nine Requisites for<lb />Contented Living<lb /><lb />Spiritual Thoughts: Pastor<lb />George Hawkins discusses<lb /><lb />speaking in tongues<lb /><lb />Black America<lb /><lb />to the airwaves<lb /><lb />ad<lb /><lb />Carter G. I assure you that when |<lb />ran, there were no feature pieces on<lb />60 Minutes about what a  ofemin-<lb />ized" White House would be like.<lb />Nor, for that matter, were there any<lb />afticles about a potential<lb />_ oAfricanization  of the White<lb />House. Everyone pretty much knew<lb /> that I wasn't a "serious female<lb />presidential candidate" in the way<lb />Elizabeth Dole is. Elizabeth Dole<lb /> is, after all, a Republican and will<lb />run for the White House - if she<lb />_ does - as a Republican with the full<lb /><lb /> weight of the Republican P<lb />behind her. uy<lb /><lb />This means, of course, access to<lb /> osignificant amounts of money, sig-<lb />Mificant amounts of press coverage,<lb />-automatic access to the presidential<lb /><lb />debates, not to mention the impri-<lb /> matur of legitimacy that comes<lb />with being a Republican or a<lb /> Democrat in U.S. politics.<lb /><lb />I, of course, was neither a<lb />Democrat or Republican. And<lb /> though I did succeed in achieving<lb />and qualified for feral, primary<lb /><lb />  or primary<lb /> omatching funds--becoming the sec-<lb /> ond i t and first Black<lb /> owoman to do so--in fact, those<lb /> achievements merely ified the<lb />extent to which presidential! politics<lb />and the political arena in general is<lb />a bipartisan and not a nonpartisan<lb /> affair, no matter what barriers one<lb />breaks or "firsts" one achieves.<lb /><lb />Indeed, this fact of political life<lb /> oin America, was the reason I ran<lb />-for President. In other words, I was<lb />-not a "serious" candidate for the<lb /> opresidency in the sense that I had<lb />  any shot at the White House. But I<lb /> was a serious candidate for the<lb /><lb />presidency insofar as helping to<lb />expose and breaking open the<lb /> obarriers to a more inclusionary and<lb />up-from-the-bottom multi-party de-<lb />mocracy is a serious concern. In my<lb /> opinion, this concern is ultimately<lb />- More serious than the question of<lb /> owho wins the White House in any<lb />given election cycle.<lb />[polled nearly a quarter of a<lb />"million votes in 1988, or about<lb /><lb />n<lb /><lb />= ~ ee<lb /><lb />.25%, not exactly numbers that<lb />send the Republicans and<lb /><lb />Democrats running for cover. It<lb />would take a wealthy, white male<lb />independent and 20% of the vote to<lb />do that, an event of tremendous,<lb />and, in my opinion, deeply misun-<lb />derstood political magnitude which<lb />occurred just four years later. In<lb />some   as I reflect back on<lb />the 1988 presidential run and all<lb />that happened since, I see the years<lb />that followed it as a kind of<lb />simmering cauldron of political<lb />revolt that exploded in 1992 on<lb />several fronts - not the least of<lb />which was Ross Perot's independ-<lb />ent campaign. I do not mean to<lb />suggest that my campaign was the<lb />cause of that revolt. Rather, it was<lb />in anticipation of it.<lb /><lb />If my 1988 presidential run<lb />detected a bare murmur of public<lb />discontent with politics-as-usual - it<lb />was, nonetheless, a clear statement<lb />about the myths of American<lb />democracy. My Democratic and<lb />Republican opponents had to<lb />gather about 40,000 signatures<lb />nationally on petitions to access the<lb />ballot. I had to gather 1.2 million<lb />signatures, the result of a patch-<lb />work of state laws all promulgated<lb />by bipartisan consent, to make<lb />access to the ballot virtually impos-<lb />sible for independents. The barriers<lb /><lb />weren't just structural, they were<lb />attitudinal. Virtually every time the<lb />press mentioned me, which wasn't<lb />often, my name was preceded by<lb />the words "fringe candidate." It was<lb />so frequent that I started to use it<lb />myself, sometimes to illustrate the<lb />gap between what I had achieved<lb />and how I was perceived. I would<lb />sometimes say, "Hi! I'm Lenora<lb />Fulani, the fringe candidate who<lb />qualified for two million dollars in<lb />matching funds from the United<lb />States Treasury." I even named my<lb />autobiographical account of my<lb />second presidential mn The<lb />Making of a Fringe Candidate.<lb /><lb />But as traditional political align-<lb />ments and alliances melt away, and<lb />new alliances start to form, the<lb />"fringe" starts to occupy a more<lb />influential _ political §_ position.<lb /><lb />Millions of Americans - half the T<lb /><lb />electorate, actually -- are on the<lb />fringes of American politics. They<lb />don't vote and they view the<lb />political process as having little or<lb />nothing to do with them. They're<lb />right. And that's exactly what has<lb />to be changed.<lb /><lb />Reforming our political process<lb />to make it genuinely democratic,<lb />inclusionary and easy-to- use is the<lb />key. And those reforms could get us<lb />to the point where we not only<lb />could elect a woman or an African<lb />American to the White House,<lb />more importantly, we could elect an<lb />independent who brings a new way<lb />of doing politics, and up-from-the-<lb />bottom way of doing politics, to the<lb />highest office in the land.<lb /><lb />ay<lb />AX<lb /><lb />MILLENIA COMMUNITY'BANK_  (Proposep)<lb /><lb />WASHINGTON (AP) ~ In Boston,<lb /><lb />cries of police brutality are rela-<lb />tively rare. The Pentecostal ranks<lb /><lb />Catholics who speak in tongues are<lb />not uncommon today. Why has<lb />there been a mass flight to these<lb />churches? The answer is simple:<lb />First, Christians are seeking to<lb />experience the realities of the<lb />Christian life; secondly, the stagna-<lb />tion and hollowness of the mainline<lb /><lb /> denominations have stifled the<lb /><lb />working of the Holy Spirit in the<lb />hearts of believers.<lb /><lb />Speaking in tongues will help us<lb />to know what we do not know,<lb />understand what we do not under-<lb />stand, and prophesy with words<lb />that do not spring from our own<lb />minds. "The Spirit searcheth all<lb />things, yea, the deep things of God"<lb />(I Corinthians 2:10). When you<lb />pray in tongues, it is the Holy Spirit<lb />within you giving you the utterance<lb />and you speak it out of your<lb />utterance. "For he that speaketh in<lb />an unknown tongue speaketh not<lb />unto men, but unto God, for no<lb />man understandeth him" (I<lb />Corinthians 14:2).<lb /><lb />Even though the interpretation<lb />of tongues is considered to be one<lb />of the gifts, there is actually no<lb />need for an interpreter since you<lb />are talking directly to God. He<lb />understands. Man does not need to<lb />understand because it is a dialogue<lb />between the Believer and God.<lb />Even in a corporate anointing such<lb />as a prayer gathering or in a church<lb />service, it would be very confusing<lb />to attempt to interpret every tongue<lb /><lb />tOMSHCS Patt<lb /><lb />that is uttered. There are many<lb /><lb />evidences of tongues -- speaking in<lb />the Bible. Acts 10:46 reads, "For<lb />they heard them with<lb />tongues, and magnify God." Acts<lb />19:6 reads, " when Paul had<lb />laid his hands upon them, the Holy<lb />Ghost came on them and they<lb />spake with tongues and prophe-<lb />sied." Paul says (I Corinthians<lb />14:18 "I thank my God, I speak<lb />with tongues more than ye all."<lb />Jesus Christ himself said in Mark<lb />16:17, "And these signs shall<lb />follow them that believe, they shall<lb />speak with new tongues.<lb /><lb />There are many spiritual benefits<lb />from talking in tongues. First, "He<lb />that speaketh in an unknown<lb />tongue edifieth (builds up) himself.<lb />(I Corinthians 14:4). Secondly,<lb />tongues speaking stimulates your<lb />faith in and helps you to give<lb />thanks to God. Thirdly, tongues-<lb />speaking keeps us from thinking<lb />evil thoughts and talking in a<lb />manner that is not pleasing to God.<lb /><lb />God promises to give to every<lb />reborn Christian the Holy Spirit as<lb />a gift, and the Apostle Paul<lb />commands Christians to be filled<lb />continually with the Spirit. It<lb />qualifies us for service and makes<lb />us more like Christ. Tongues-<lb />speaking is the expression for this<lb />continuous infilling.<lb /><lb />Dr. George A. Hawkins is the<lb />pastor of the Tabernacle Church of<lb />Deliverance in Greenville.<lb /><lb />[Read the Word of God and know the truth<lb /><lb />"All of us fear one another more than anything in the world. The fear of the Other, of what the Other will do<lb />if her finds out we are afraid of him -- that is what has brought us to this pass. We must turn and realize that<lb />the Other is afraid ~ and then say to him, "You have nothing to fear from me,' in such a way that he knows<lb />it to be true. Another thing we have no desire to say! Each of us secretly desires to keep the Other in some<lb />slight fear of us, so that he can not harm us. But if we can only bring ourselves to say those terrible words,<lb />and have them to be true, then the Other will become what he should have been from the earliest days -- the<lb /><lb />constant companion, the source of delight in all his differences."<lb />--- attributed to Surak<lb /><lb />The power of a Grandma.<lb /><lb />Children have a very special<lb />relationship with Grandma and<lb />Grandpa. Woodson was born<lb />December 19, 1875, at New Canton<lb />Hospital in  Buckingham County,<lb />Virginia. One of a large poor<lb />family, he could not regularly<lb />attend local schools. However, by<lb />teaching himself, he was able to<lb />master the fundamentals of com-<lb />mon school subjects by the time he<lb />was seventeen.<lb /><lb />Hoping to further his education,<lb />Carter and his brother, Robert<lb />Henry, moved to Huntington, West<lb />Virginia. Unfortunately, he was<lb />forced to earn his living as a miner<lb />in the Fayette County coal fields. It<lb />was not until 1895 that was he able<lb />to enter the Douglass High School<lb />in Huntington, where he won his<lb />diploma in less than two years. He<lb />received his high school certificate<lb />with creditable grades. It is thus<lb />easy to understand that he earned<lb />the degree of Bachelor's of<lb />Literature (then called "Litt.           <lb />A man of leisure now.......Deacon Horace retired on April 1-- after<lb />years of employment with the East Carolina University Housekeeping<lb />Department. A Deacon at Wynn Chapel Baptist Church, he cares for<lb />everyone around him. His wife, Mrs. Annie Andrews, children, and<lb />grandchildren will readily attest that he is a devoted husband and family<lb />man. After many years of heard work, he is wished a happy retirement<lb />from his family, church family, and all his friends at ECU.<lb /><lb />Get the word out......Ms. Nell Lewis (second from right) of Pitt<lb /><lb />Community College is always looking for ways to educate the public<lb />about the Outreach Program at PCC. She is joined here by (from left to<lb />right) Mrs. Sujette Jones and Clay Wilkins. Who's the woman on the far<lb />right, you might ask? Why, she's no less than Binnie Take-Wilkin, a<lb />Greenville native and a noted storyteller! The Wilkins were visiting<lb />friend and family before returning to California.<lb /><lb />Proud businessmen......Monte Williams (left) certainly has reason to<lb />smile. He's the owner and manager of the hottest restaurant in<lb />Greenville, Monte's Dining! And when Bill Freelove (right) -- owner of<lb />all the McDonald's franchises in Eastern North Carolina -- recently<lb />dropped in to check out the food, then came out smiling, Monte had even<lb />more reason to smile. After all, he had just received praise from his<lb />former employer!<lb /><lb />UIZ: What do Jc<lb />wspaper all have in common?<lb /><lb />OW Joy 1<lb /><lb />Come see me for<lb />all your<lb />ww needs,<lb /><lb />1-800-335-2972<lb /><lb />139 West Third St.<lb />Washington NC 27889 WW<lb /><lb /> GRIEF DOES NOT HEAL, NOR CAN IT ATTEN<lb /><lb />| THE VOID LEFT BY THE DEATH OF A BELO<lb /><lb />__ BUT MAY TIME IN ITS JOURNEY OFFER A SE<lb /><lb />- SOLACE AND RELIEF TO THE MANY HOURS:<lb /><lb />: INITIATED BY THE DEATH OF OUR BEL<lb />DAUGHTER, BRENDA NOBLES BASKINS<lb /><lb />The Minority<lb />Voice<lb />wants your pictures!<lb /><lb />Send in your pictures of people you<lb /><lb />know, along with information about |<lb /><lb />them.....we'll run it here, on our<lb />Familiar Faces page.<lb /><lb />Birthdays, weddings, candid shots,<lb /><lb />or if you just want to embarrass a<lb /><lb />friend a little bit, go ahead, send in<lb />those pics!
