(Reuters) -<lb />Outlaw Republican David Duke, a<lb /> owhite rights" advocate who once<lb />led the Ku Klux Klan and is trying<lb />to revive a flagging political career<lb />with a run for Congress, details his<lb />beliefs in a new 736-page book that<lb />calls for an Aryan resurgence.<lb />Duke is making the rounds of<lb />radio talk shows to jump-start his<lb />run for the First District seat<lb />vacated by former House<lb />Appropriations Committee chair-<lb />man and  Speaker-elect Bob<lb />Livingston, who resigned after<lb />admitting to several sexual indis-<lb />cretions during his 21 years in<lb />Congress.<lb />A decade ago, Duke declared<lb /><lb />himself a Republican and was<lb /><lb />elected to the state House from a<lb />virtually all-white suburb of New<lb />Orleans on a platform of conserva-<lb />tive populism, despite vehement<lb /><lb />denunciations of his past from the<lb />national Republican Party and<lb />then-President George Bush.<lb /><lb />But leaders of the state<lb />Republican Party, controlled for<lb />years by the conservative religious<lb />right, would not repudiate him<lb />despite efforts by moderate party<lb />members.<lb /><lb />Duke now is chairman of the St.<lb />Tammany parish  "_ (county)<lb />Republican Committee in part of<lb />the First Congressional District<lb />north of New Orleans.<lb /><lb />In his first and ensuing cam-<lb />paigns as a Republican, Duke<lb />described his Klan and neo-Nazi<lb />affiliations as   youthful indiscre-<lb />tions," maintaining he was not a<lb />racist when he railed against<lb />affirmative action, welfare and<lb />crime, positions held by many<lb /><lb />conservatives.<lb /><lb />But minorities and liberals were<lb />outraged by his Lain rags and<lb />what they considered thinly veiled<lb /><lb />ill campaign}<lb /><lb />racist attacks, and the embarrassed<lb />national Republican Party dis-<lb />owned him.<lb /><lb />The next year, 1990, he won 45<lb />percent of the vote in a hard fought<lb />race for the U.S. Senate against<lb />then-incumbent J. Bennett<lb />Johnston, a Democrat, but six years<lb />later did not make the runoff after<lb />Johnston retired.<lb /><lb />In 1991, Duke pulled in enough<lb />votes in the governor's race to face<lb />former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards in<lb />a runoff, Edwards was elected to an<lb />unprecedented fourth term by a<lb />landslide.<lb /><lb />Although most political analysts<lb />give Duke little chance of winning<lb />-- recent polls show him with only<lb />5 percent of the vote -- in the race<lb />against four other Republicans and<lb />one Democrat, he often has re-<lb /><lb />ceived far more votes than polls<lb />would indicate.<lb /><lb />In an interview with Reuters this<lb />week, Duke called his self-<lb /><lb />published book,   My Awakening,"<lb />a  othesis in the form of an<lb />autobiography -- the story of my<lb />political and racial awakening that<lb /> oes into the philosophical, socio-<lb />ogical and scientific ... (reasons<lb />for) what I believe and how I came<lb />to believe it, as to what the<lb />liberal media claim I believe."<lb />Duke says he is not a white<lb />supremacist, writing:  'I'm opposed<lb />to any sort of racial supremacy, and<lb />I believe the races should co-exist<lb />peacefully ... (with) optional sepa-<lb />rate homelands" for minorities.<lb />But he asserts that African-<lb />Americans are intellectually infe-<lb />rior to whites and that a   physical<lb />revolution may be required some-<lb />day to free our (white) people and<lb />secure our survival, and such is<lb />justified by the highest laws of<lb /><lb />Nature and God."<lb /><lb />Duke's critics maintain that in<lb />his book he finally has shed the<lb />cloak of mainstream conservatism<lb /><lb />and revealed himself as racist,<lb />virulently anti-Semitic and homo-<lb />phobic.<lb /><lb /> This book marks a significant<lb />departure from his old strategy of<lb />camouflaging his political goals,"<lb />Lance Hill, director of Tulane<lb />University's Southern Institute for<lb />Education and Research, told<lb />Reuters.<lb /><lb /> This indicates he is more<lb />concerned with establishing his<lb />credentials with the extreme right-<lb />wing than with winning electoral<lb />office in the future," said Hill.<lb /><lb />Jerry Himelstein of the Anti-<lb />Defamation League said Duke was<lb />finally coming clean about his<lb />racial hatreds.<lb /><lb />**] think it's very clear confirma-<lb />tion that David Duke is finally,<lb />openly embracing the hatreds he<lb />has no doubt held continuously<lb />throughout his career," said<lb />Himelstein.<lb /><lb />on<lb /><lb />By MELISSA B. ROBINSON<lb /><lb />WASHINGTON (AP)<lb />Lawmakers are renewing their<lb />campaign for an expanded federal<lb />hate crimes statute, hoping public<lb />outrage over recent killings will<lb />spur passage.<lb /><lb /> No one says hate crimes are<lb />overblown now, not after this year<lb />of savage crimes," said Sen.<lb />Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a co-<lb />sponsor of the Hate Crimes<lb />Prevention Act of 1999, a replica of<lb />last year's bill.<lb /><lb />Last month in Texas, John<lb />William King, a white supremacist,<lb />was sentenced to death for chaining<lb />sep remy fares peel<lb /><lb />ind a pickup t ng<lb />him to his death.<lb /><lb />Two men have been charged in<lb /><lb />ing of gay ra<lb /><lb />Rep. As<lb />well, backers are concerned that<lb />social conservatives may construe<lb />the legislation as extending special<lb />protections to homosexuals.<lb /><lb />This is not a bill that will, in<lb />one way, advantage one over<lb />another,  said tic<lb />Sen, Ron who is sponsor<lb />ing the in the Senate with<lb />Massachusetts Democrat Edward<lb /><lb />and Pennsylvania<lb /><lb />an Arlen Specter,  'I can't<lb /><lb />any members of the United<lb /><lb />States Senate want to be soft on<lb /><lb />violence."<lb />Specter said he wasn't as opti-<lb /><lb />mistic as some of his colleagues.<lb />**A lot of opponents ... pick out<lb />hate crimes legislation for a great<lb />deal of criticism," he said.  This is<lb />a tough bill to get very much<lb /><lb />support.<lb /><lb />Under the bill, current law<lb />would be expanded so the Justice<lb />Department could prosecute crimes<lb />based on a person's sex, sexual<lb />orientation or disability. Now, the<lb />statute only covers crimes based on<lb />race, color, religion or national<lb /><lb />origin.<lb /><lb />Also, the bill would make<lb />federal prosecution of hate crimes<lb />easier. nt law limits prosecu-<lb />tion to situations where the victim<lb />is targeted for engaging in certain<lb />federally protected activities, such<lb />as serving on a jury, voting or|<lb />attending public school.<lb /><lb />More than 40 states have hate<lb />crimes ' laws but only 21 cover<lb /><lb />sexual orientation, 22 cover gender jf}:<lb />and 21 cover disability, according }}}'\<lb />to the White House, which supports ff t<lb /><lb />the bill.<lb /><lb />Kennedy said the bill wouldn't |<lb />undermine states in prosecuting }<lb />hate crimes, just bring investigative<lb />and other<lb />government to bear where neces-|<lb /><lb />sary.<lb /><lb />TT<lb />wel &amp;@<lb /><lb /> Opening recently in Greenville is the all new Culture Closet!<lb />Specializing in hand-crafted jewelry, framed pictures, reggae and<lb />resources of the federal I] hip-hop gear, Culture Closet is the place to go! The last devastating wild-<lb />fire season in Southern California<lb />was in 1996.<lb /><lb />And people seem to be doing a<lb /><lb />better job of getting along. Racial<lb />tensions exacerbated by the police<lb />beating of black motorist King, by<lb />the riots that followed and by<lb />political debates over immigration<lb /><lb />and affirmative action appear to<lb />have relaxed.<lb /><lb />"At least L.A. is beginning to<lb />shake off its status as a unique<lb />dystopia.         <p>The Minority Voice: March 19  " March 31, 1999<lb /><lb /> oThe<lb />An In-<lb /><lb />It can be argued that having<lb />small children is an act inherently<lb />devoid of logic. They are tiresome,<lb />ae and Reaper?<lb /><lb />require amounts of<lb />money to feed and clothe. Finally,<lb />they are messy, loud, and habitual<lb />expel viscous fluids at high velocity<lb />through a variety of orifices. In<lb />short, no sane being would ever<lb />want to have a child.<lb /><lb />Still, because it might be equally<lb />bad for the human race to become<lb />extinct, there is, perhaps, some<lb />justification of the human sufferin:<lb />that goes hand in hand wit<lb />parenthood. But, I must wonder:<lb />Despite all the drawbacks to having<lb />children, is it worth it?<lb /><lb />Over the last several months,<lb />I've become convinced that the<lb />secret as to why children survive so<lb />Icag among adults is that the<lb />children have an advantage over us<lb />that they cultivate in the womb.<lb /><lb />Mental telepathy.<lb /><lb />I wonder if their ability to<lb />influence and take over our minds<lb />is what keeps people having kids,<lb />despite the obvious problems inher-<lb />ent in that decision.<lb /><lb />Babies are usually considered to<lb />be cute and cuddly, no matter what<lb />their species. Since I've actually<lb />observed my wife watching the<lb />Discovery c el, saying, "Look<lb />at those cute baby snakes," there<lb />must be some reason other than<lb />simply perpetuating our species. I<lb />believe my theory of mental domi-<lb />nation explains it. It is only<lb />through observing recent events --<lb />and doing laborious late-night re-<lb />search -- that I have been able to<lb /><lb />Ding, Gong, the Sandmants dead,<lb /><lb />Some people personify sleep as a<lb />man who creeps into your bedroom,<lb />sprinkling some magical sand that<lb />weighs down your eyelids, thus<lb />sending you into dreamland. While<lb />I, myself, have never actually see<lb />the Sandman, one thing that I do<lb />know is this: every baby does their<lb />best to assassinate him.<lb /><lb />Every night, we try to sleep. and,<lb />every night, our daughter (we're<lb />naming her Maia Elise) makes<lb />certain that we get as little as<lb />possible.<lb /><lb />It started with the changing<lb />shape of my wife's body. Because<lb />her breasts and stomach are grow-<lb />ing exponentially, there is now<lb />added stress and strain on her back<lb /><lb />assemble any proof of the true<lb />nature of babies.<lb /><lb />I'm a normal guy. So, when I<lb />found that my wife was pregnant, I<lb />did what most males do: the<lb />"victory strut" (see page 105 of The<lb />Men's Handbook}. My wife has<lb />been extremely amused, watching<lb />me strut about like a peacock,<lb />effectively saying to the world,<lb />"Look what I did, look what I did!"<lb />She says that I've been acting as<lb />though I am the only man in<lb />existence to have ever impregnated<lb />a woman. Although I suspect that it<lb />has, in fact, happened before, that<lb />doesn't stop me from feeling as<lb />though I can bench-press a bus.<lb /><lb />Actually, it's the alien nature of<lb />the baby that makes me do it. They<lb />have these telepathic powers that<lb />allow them to control the actions of<lb />those around them on a subcon-<lb />scious level. Don't believe me? A<lb />friend of ours, Amelinda (not her<lb />real name), has sworn time and<lb />again that she has no interest in<lb />having children. When she found<lb />out my wife was pregnant, she<lb />abruptly wanted to see and feel the<lb />baby, even though there was, at the<lb />time, no outside proof. She's al-<lb />ready buying baby clothes, and<lb />wants to go to the next ultrasound,<lb />is delighted when the baby kicks,<lb />walks around with a oddly goofy<lb />grin on her face after she's felt the<lb />baby kick, and......<lb /><lb />Another example is Bernie, an-<lb />other friend of ours. Although he's<lb />not really the outgoing or demon-<lb />strative type, like Amelinda, he has<lb />also been acting out of character.<lb />His fingers have developed a type<lb /><lb />Der I<lb /><lb />move.<lb /><lb />Finally, there is the proof of the |<lb />mother's state of mental integrity |<lb />(or lack thereof). My wife is the |<lb />type to remember the most minute }<lb />details of any conversation. S|<lb /><lb />wife; it doesn't st until he's felt |<lb />the baby °°<lb /><lb />tell me what I was wearing the day<lb />we met, and also call to mind my<lb />exact words from any conversation<lb />we've ever had. So it seems strange<lb />that she, suddenly, will have forgot-<lb />ten her brother's name, or what<lb />time she's supposed to see a client,<lb />or even what clothes she wore the<lb />before. She, who was the<lb /><lb />epitome of grace, has become<lb />clumsy: dropping things, tripping<lb />over invisible objects that she<lb />swears are there, that type of thing.<lb /><lb />Thankfully, this type of mental<lb />influence is temporary, rarely last-<lb />ing beyond the time that the bay<lb />emerges from its human host. Still,<lb />perhaps the threat of their influence<lb />does not end there, for they can still<lb />wrap people around their finger by<lb />simply "being sweet and adorable."<lb /><lb />Most people think that children<lb />learn how to speak by emulating<lb />others. Not so. The truth of the<lb />matter is that their mental abilities<lb />are slowly transforming into vocal<lb />abilities. While the effects are not<lb />as subtle as their former mental<lb />abilities, they are often times as<lb />effective, as is demonstrated to any<lb />parent who has watched another<lb />besieged by screaming children in a<lb />toy store.<lb /><lb />This would explain why most<lb />experts on the art of child-raising<lb />never have any themselves!<lb /><lb />;<lb /><lb />muscles, which have begun scream-<lb />ing in protest. As the baby has<lb />assumed more and more control of<lb />my wife's body, sleep has become<lb />an increasingly faded memory. The<lb />baby has made her displeasure at<lb />the way my wife normally sleeps<lb />well-known, forcing my wife to<lb />entertain herself most nights in<lb />trying to find a comfortable posi-<lb />tion to sleep. Generally, she suc-<lb />ceeds, if only for a little while. The<lb />baby has some stopwatch that sfie<lb />uses to decide how long her<lb />mommy allowed to rest in any<lb />given position. Once the time is up,<lb />she kicks up a storm, forcing her<lb />mother to again try to find a<lb />comfortable position.<lb /><lb />Olvera<lb /><lb />I-GOO0-32 1-34<lb /><lb />Gel on the Road (0<lb />Hnanctal Freedom!<lb />"The Debt- (ree and Properdus<lb />ag Base Cause"<lb /><lb />\ step-by-step course in taking<lb />control of your finances.<lb /><lb />C7TQ (I) &amp; shipping \<lb /> a<lb /><lb />8:30 - 5<lb /><lb />(OO RM.<lb /><lb />ravenna<lb />Anlareliiare<lb /><lb />H Z NI\ \<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ACC<lb /><lb />BUILDING HOMES,,<lb />BU TEDING HOP<lb /><lb />Habitat for Humanity of Pitt County is seeking applicants<lb /><lb />Ea<lb /><lb />for housing. Sam, the more rambunc-<lb />tious of the two fur demons, loves<lb />to ambush Twinkie in the wee<lb />hours of the morning, creating a<lb />loud racket that usually only ends<lb />when I toss a book at them.<lb /><lb />While this is normal cat behav-<lb />ior, baby Maia has decided to join<lb />her brothers in bringing us early-<lb />morning misery. When they begin<lb />to play, she hears them and wants<lb />to play too. She usually does this by<lb />attempting to kick Tfield goals with<lb />my wife's bladder, or by beating the<lb />inside of my wife's stomach until<lb />my wife is forced to move around,<lb />trying to find a more comfortable<lb />position, and this waking me up, as<lb />well. She said once that she'd like<lb />to kick all three of them out, and let<lb />them amuse themselves downstairs,<lb />but Maia's unborn condition defeats<lb />that idea. So, almost every night<lb />from midnight to 2:30, four to five,<lb />and 6:15 to 6:45, we know that the<lb />were all going to be awake, thanks<lb />to baby Maia and her brothers.<lb /><lb />Most times when Maia's feeling<lb />playful, nothing will calm her<lb /><lb />down. Recently, night we discov- |]<lb /><lb />ered a sure way to calm her down<lb />in the middle of the night. Baby<lb />Maia was simply not letting us rest,<lb />refusing to settle down, no matter<lb />what we did. Sam, who usually<lb />loves to hop into bed with us,<lb />jumped in as usual, settling be-<lb />tween my wife and I. He kneaded<lb />the blankets, issuing an orgasmi-<lb />cally content purring as he did so.<lb />Since this is normal for him, we<lb />ignored him, until my wife got a<lb />funny look on her face. She's<lb />calmed down, she said, amazed.<lb />Naturally, we were ecstatic! We<lb />might be able to sleep! Needless to<lb />say, we were extremely happy with<lb />this turn of events. _<lb />Then, a problem was revealed to<lb />. Sam, apparently sensing my<lb />dden change of sae regard-<lb />ing his being in the bed, decided to<lb />be contrary and left! I've generally<lb />been opposed to allowing the cats<lb />in the but, since the cats make<lb />up their own rules, I'd given up that<lb />fight long ago. Now, I want them<lb />there, they won't do it.<lb />Figures.<lb /><lb />us<lb />su<lb /><lb />ook<lb /><lb />WTOW<lb /><lb />INA<lb /><lb />Aside from their mental<lb /><lb />babies have demonstrated the abil-<lb />ity to reduce any woman (and by<lb />connection, the man) to a state of<lb />horror. My wife has clothing that<lb />has been desi as "My<lb />Favorite." For example, she'll be<lb />looking for "My Favorite Bra" or<lb /> oMy Favorite Jeans." If those<lb />objects of her affection can not be<lb />found, she will sink into a slight<lb />level of depression until the objects<lb />are found. (Personally, I think a<lb />study should be commissioned on<lb />this: "Clothing and the Addiction<lb />Cycle: An Investigation into the<lb />Fashion Habits of Women.")<lb /><lb />Ordinarily, this is not a problem.<lb /><lb />After all, any man develops a sixth<lb />sense related to wear these items of<lb />clothing are at any given time. My<lb />wife can start to ask, "Baby, have<lb />you seen My....," and, without<lb />looking up from what I'm doing, I<lb />can reply,  oIt's upstairs in the<lb />closet.  Of course, then follows the<lb />struggle for dominance in who will<lb />be the one to journey ALL the way<lb />upstairs to retrieve the item. A<lb />smart man will give in nearly<lb /><lb />Quest for Sanity:<lb /><lb />{ES a ea SN | EE SE NS SS oe F  <lb /><lb />~ a ron ~ in - a nn  "- rey mn " n<lb />have secret mental<lb /><lb />Beloved's heart (see page 27 of The<lb />Men's Handbook).<lb /><lb />to put on what she<lb />classifies as "My Favorite Jeans."<lb />She had worn them only three days<lb />earlier, and, abruptly, they're fitting<lb />more snugly than before. She is<lb />outraged, of course, over this turn<lb /><lb />of events, which is the result of the<lb />baby's growing influence upon its<lb />surrounding environment. The next<lb /><lb />day, just to test my wife's sanity, the<lb />jeans fit perfectly. Then, the follow-<lb />ing week, she can not get into them<lb />at all, thus ensuring a rampage that<lb />last about 48 hours (and is due, no<lb />doubt, to the baby's growing mental<lb />influence).<lb /><lb />Aside from the clothing issue,<lb />there is another matter which must<lb />be addressed when dealing with the<lb />effect of the baby on its host. One<lb />morning, we noticed a significant<lb />change in my wife's appearance. To<lb />put it delicately, her  ocups runneth<lb />over." The baby had decided it was<lb /><lb />ounce bottle.<lb /><lb />It didn't stop there. Aside from -<lb />her being more fleshy than before,<lb />her hair and nails are growing at an<lb />exponential rate, making sleeping<lb />in the same bed with her an<lb />exercise in pure courage and<lb />daring. I've lost count of how many<lb />times I've moved in close to<lb />snuggle her, only to be choked<lb />moments later by her hair, which<lb />seems to have developed its own<lb />will, and keeps trying to run down<lb />my throat For that matter, the nails<lb />are equally dangerous. Since<lb />they've grown, they try to lacerate<lb />my ankles every chance they get.<lb /><lb />All parents, at some point, curse<lb />their children. It's the ultimate in<lb />curses, existing back through his-<lb />tory, all the way to the Garden of<lb />Eden. God, disappointed in His<lb />kids, tossed them out of the house<lb />and doomed them into having kids.<lb />Effectively, what He said was  oI<lb /><lb />of it for hours, and it simply was<lb />becoming unbearable. In agony, |<lb />asked my wife if I could put my<lb />head in her lap, and let her rub my<lb />temples to ease the pain. She<lb />agreed, so I lay my head in her lap,<lb />the back of my head snug against<lb />her belly, and let her fingers go to<lb /><lb />hope you have kids just like you" -- work. After about five minutes or<lb /><lb />in other words, willful, stubborn<lb />and disobedient.<lb /><lb />Once upon a time, my wife said<lb />"Parents are means......1 cant wait<lb />to be one!" She said that reflecting<lb />on the apparent power a parent has<lb />over their children. What we did<lb />not understand at the time is that<lb />parents don't have any power over<lb />our kids. They, on the other hand,<lb />have power over us. They have so<lb />much power, in fact, that they get<lb />away with abusing us.<lb /><lb />Not long ago, | had a blinding<lb />headache. I'd been trying to get rid<lb /><lb />The terrifying aspects of chil-<lb /><lb />dren notwithstanding, there actu-<lb /><lb />are benefits involved with<lb />having children. During this preg-<lb />nancy, we've really discovered who<lb />will be involved in our childs life.<lb />Many people have united in their<lb />desire to help us make this child's<lb />entrance into the world a joyous<lb />and loving one. Our families are<lb />taking the opportunity to get in-<lb />volved, as Maia will be a stronger<lb />dedication to the unity of our<lb /><lb />so, I noticed that the ache in the<lb />back of my brain had changed to a<lb />kind of subtle pulsing sensation.<lb />Normally, I'd not find that strange,<lb />except that this pulse had nothing<lb />to do with my own heart rate! I was<lb />just trying to figure out what was<lb />going on when I realized that I was<lb />actually feeling something strike<lb />the back of my head very lightly,<lb />but firmly. Just then, my wife<lb />asked, laughingly curious, "Is she<lb />kicking you?"<lb /><lb />Yes, our innocent little daughter<lb />was trying to use my head as a<lb /><lb />families.<lb /><lb />Despite all the sleepless nights,<lb />having to make late-night runs to<lb />the grocery store or Burger King to<lb />satisfy my wife's evil cravings, or<lb />even the cats flashing us attitude<lb />because we pay the baby more<lb />attention than we do them, | still<lb />wouldn't trade this experience for<lb />the world. There has been nothing<lb />I've experienced in this world that<lb />even compares to the feel of my<lb />baby's movements under my hand,<lb /><lb />football. Apparently, she had de-<lb />cided that she didn't feel like<lb />sharing her mother, and so decided<lb />to get rid of me. Either that, or<lb />she'd decided that I was invading<lb />her territory. In any case, she's<lb />become far more active since.<lb /><lb />_ Her favorite thing to do when<lb />I'm sleeping is to kick me in the<lb /><lb />back. She'll make her mother fid<lb /><lb />about in bed until she snuggles<lb />behind me, and her belly is p<lb />against my back. Then, Maia will<lb /><lb />roceed to kick the heck out of my<lb /><lb />ack until either I move, or her<lb />mother rolls back over---in which<lb />case, waits a bit, then starts all over<lb />again.<lb /><lb />Needless to say, I'm a bit<lb />concerned about the ways in which<lb />she amuses herself. After all, if this<lb />is how she is now, what will she be<lb />like after the birth?<lb /><lb />hero is hope for the futune<lb /><lb />or that is like the light in my wife's<lb />eyes when she feels Maia move<lb />inside her.           <lb />by Tyson  <lb /><lb />King-Meadows<lb /><lb />Like Maurice!!!<lb /><lb />When Jordan retired from bas-<lb />ketball (again), fans of his athletic<lb />ability, entrepreneurial spirit, and<lb />public relations savvy feared that<lb />Black youth would turn their<lb />attention to destructive role models<lb />- gangster rappers, athletes in<lb />denial about their explicit<lb />responsibilities-- or worst, engulf<lb />themselves in street corner cultural.<lb /><lb />Not to worry, parents, Maurice<lb />Ashley, newly honored Chess<lb />Gran et, has stepped into the<lb />spotlight. This 33 year-old chess<lb />player achieved the highest rank in<lb />this game of strategy on March<lb />14th, and became the first Black to<lb />achieve the title, despite the 470<lb />Grandmasters worldwide and the 5<lb />United States Grandmasters. Far<lb />from a scene out of the movie<lb />Fresh, Maurice Ashley's recent<lb />accomplishments provide some ad-<lb /><lb />ditional insight into Black<lb />Americas collective culture and<lb />political practices.<lb /><lb />First, this achievement lets the<lb />world, but particularly Black youth,<lb />know that the premium paid for<lb />merely focusing on improving their<lb />athletic ability comes at a very high<lb />price. Only a select few make it to<lb />their respective sports professional<lb />level in America. But playgrounds<lb />are filled with dreamers. No, not<lb />MLK-style dreamers, but those<lb />M.J. dreamers who wear Nikes,<lb />trash talk, and shoot from beyond<lb />the arc. Some, however, have not<lb />learned to harness that same fire<lb />and. intensity to drive through a<lb />long division problem, or under-<lb />stand the geometry behind measur-<lb />ing the angles that intersect an arc.<lb /><lb />Maurice Ashley's talent was not<lb />displayed on a basketball court but<lb />on a chess board--perhaps mixing<lb />the defensive strategies of a Box-<lb />and-One with Queens Indian<lb />Defense (Paris Open) 1989, or<lb />exchanging drives to the hoop for<lb />high screens set with Bishops and<lb />Rooks that eventually would check<lb />the King. If Michael Jordan did<lb />someth..1g for Black youth through<lb />basketball, Maurice Ashley can do<lb />that for Black youth through the<lb />game of chess.<lb /><lb />Second, the game of chess is a<lb />lot like politics. Pieces are allowed<lb />to make only specified movements,<lb />rank in power, and have definite<lb />value once captured. The objective<lb />of chess is simple: checkmate the<lb />King. Pawns, Knights, Bishops,<lb />Rooks (castles), and a Queen are all<lb />used in a variety of strategic moves<lb />designed to force the King into<lb />capture. Politics assigns value to<lb />pieces: Black voters, White voters,<lb />Hispanic voters, | Democrats,<lb />Republicans, governors, senators,<lb />and mayors. The objective of this<lb />game: capture the White House.<lb />Unfortunately, like chess that as-<lb />signs Pawns the lowest numerical<lb />value, politics assigns Black voters<lb />(political pawns) the lowest value<lb />in coalition building.<lb /><lb />Like Pawns, Black voters are<lb />moved to divert attention from<lb />more aggressive, higher valued<lb />pieces like Bishops (governors) and<lb />Queens (former vice-presidents),<lb />and to set up the White House for<lb />capture. In fact, skilled chess<lb />players like myself are familiar<lb />with pawn promotion-- where<lb />pawns that move across the board<lb />six squares can become promoted to<lb />another piece of your choice. The<lb /><lb />f<lb /><lb />Relationship problems? Depression that never<lb />seems to end? Feeling scared? Alone? Confused<lb />about where your life is going?<lb /><lb />Let's face it: Life can be rough. And sometimes,<lb />everyone needs a little help to cope with that.<lb /><lb />Get the help you deserve.<lb /><lb />ECU Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic<lb />612 East 10th Street, Greenville, NC 27858<lb /><lb />1998 midterm elections allowed<lb />Black voters (previously with defi-<lb />nite attacking and moving limita-<lb />tions) to be maneuvered by the<lb />Democratic Party in protection of<lb />the White House. Maybe the 2000<lb />presidential elections will deter-<lb />mine whether Black Pawns will<lb />become more maneuverable and<lb />hence valuable Knights or Bishops.<lb />Interestingly enough, in chess<lb />there is a move called castling, in<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />|<lb />|<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />which the closest Rook to the King }<lb /><lb />can be placed on the immediate<lb />opposite side of the King. Castling<lb />Queens Side gives the King more<lb />room to move behind the wall of<lb />protecting Pawns protect the King<lb />from vertical or diagonal attacks,<lb />the Rook protects the King from<lb />both vertical and horizontal at-<lb />tacks. When opponents attack, the<lb /><lb />Pawns and the Rook are dispensed<lb />to give the King opportunity to<lb />move and escape capture, some-<lb />times they are sacrificed for that<lb />specific p .<lb /><lb />Remember how Clinton and the<lb />Democratic Party used the 1992<lb />Black vote to claim the White<lb />House, used the Black vote in 1998<lb />to send a message to posturing and<lb />attacking Republicans. Clinton (the<lb />Grandmaster) distanced the White<lb />House (the King) from the interests<lb />of Black voters by attacking<lb />Jackson at his own convention,<lb />withdrawing the nomination of<lb />Lani Guinier as assistant secretary<lb />for civil rights, mishandling nomi-<lb />nees Henry Foster and Jocelyn<lb />Elders, and\by not aggressively<lb />countering the (now unproven)<lb />allegations made against former<lb />Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy.<lb />Let us not forget how Clinton<lb />deformed welfare, diminished the<lb />office through a sex scandal, used<lb />Vernon Jordan and Betty Currie as<lb />possible scapegoats, and used Rosa<lb />Parks, the CBC, and Sammy Sosa<lb />as draws for Black and Hispanic<lb />America.<lb /><lb />Maurice Ashley clearly follows<lb />the tradition of Harold Washington,<lb />a Black Congressman from<lb />Chicago who became the mayor in<lb />a racially charged, political ma-<lb />chine versus Black grassroots or-<lb />ganization contest in 1983.<lb />Washington and his followers cre-<lb />ated an independent political party,<lb />the Harold Washington Party,<lb />testament to the political sophisti-<lb />cation necessary for Black voters to<lb />secure policies amenable to their<lb />interests. By 1986 Washington and<lb />his allies had defeated many of the<lb />machine politicians and secured a<lb />majority of the seats on the city<lb />council. He died abruptly after<lb />winning reelection in 1987. For<lb />i and Ashley,<lb />be Black<lb />whether in politics or chess.<lb /><lb />Indeed, Maurice Ashley is an<lb />example that the expressions of<lb />Black youth do not have to be<lb />segregated into athletic facilities or<lb /><lb />rap videos. Not only is chess a<lb />thinking game, but an opportunity<lb />for youth to learn about politics and<lb /><lb />life. The games of politics and<lb />chess do not have to be the sole<lb />province of white Grandmasters<lb /><lb />re! Black Pawns become<lb />Bishops, Rooks, or Knights in the<lb />year 2000.<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />Women sari largely denied &amp; mn<lb />voice in i icy in No<lb />Carotina "from ool boards to<lb />corporate boards. ~<lb /><lb />That's what is revealed by a<lb />recent study on gender bias on the<lb />boards of 40 of North Carolina's<lb />most important corporations, non-<lb />profit foundations, and state gov-<lb />ernment.<lb /><lb />and commissions important? Just<lb /><lb />i how male-dominated are these<lb /><lb />boards? The study, conducted by<lb />the North Carolina Women's Forum<lb />(NCWF), sheds new light on the<lb /><lb />i under- representation of women in<lb />y the boardroom.<lb /><lb />Women in this country own<lb />some 8 million business<lb />enterprises--about one third of all<lb />U.S. businesses. These women-<lb />owned enterprises employ about<lb />one quarter of the country's work-<lb />force, roughly the same as all of the<lb />Fortune 500's workforce combined.<lb />yet women make up only ten<lb />percent of the boards of America's<lb />Fortune 500 companies.<lb /><lb />The NCWF study shows that<lb />women represent an even smaller<lb />share of the trustees of leading<lb />companies in North Carolina. Four<lb />of the leading companies in our<lb />state--R.J. Reynolds Tobacco<lb /><lb /> Company, Burlington Industries, -<lb /><lb />Family Dollar Stores and Jefferson<lb /><lb />Why is gender balance on boards<lb /><lb />Pilot Insurance Company--have no<lb />women serving on their boards. Of<lb />the 11 = traded companies<lb />muver only Lowe's Companies<lb />and Food Lion match or exceed the<lb />national average.<lb /><lb />The same pattern of gender<lb />imbalance can be seen on philan-<lb />thropic boards. Although women consti-<lb />tute only 30 percent of the trustees<lb />of private foundations nationwide,<lb />they are significantly worse in<lb />North Carolina's nonprofit organi-<lb />zations.  ".<lb /><lb />Eleven of the 18 important<lb />foundations in the study have fewer<lb />women on their boards than the 30<lb />percent national average, and two--<lb />Janirve and Wachovia--have no<lb />female trustees at all. Only Bank of<lb />America Foundation, with women<lb />in 62 percent of the directors T posts,<lb />can be congratulated for completely<lb />removing barriers to board mem-<lb />bership for women and giving them<lb />the opportunity to fully share in the<lb />foundation's policy-making proc-<lb />ess.<lb /><lb />Looking at state government,<lb />Governor Hunt appointed 840<lb />women to 400 state boards and<lb />commissions between 1993 and<lb /><lb />Florida's affirmative action |<lb /><lb />Black conservative leads attack<lb />O<lb /><lb />ed|<lb /><lb />dominated.<lb /><lb />For example, the study notes that<lb /><lb />women, who make up roughly half<lb />of North Carolina's workforce, hold<lb />only 19 percent of the seats on our<lb />state's Economic Development<lb />Board--even though North Carolina<lb />law provides that intments to<lb />that board "should reflect the ethnic<lb />and gender diversity of the State as<lb />nearly as possible."<lb /><lb />hold only 6 percent of the seats on<lb />the State Banking Commission,<lb />only 16 percent of the seats on the<lb />University of North Carolina's<lb />Board of Governors, and 30 percent<lb />of the seats on the State Board of<lb />Community Colleges; only 31 per-<lb />cent of the seats on the state Board<lb />of education, the governing board<lb />of North Carolina's public school<lb /><lb />system.<lb /><lb />North Carolina women are being<lb />denied their rightful voice in the<lb />policymaking process.         <p>The Minority Voice: March 19  " March 31, 1999<lb /><lb />g It L<lb /><lb />By Dr. Lenora Fulani<lb /><lb />I just got back from a trip to<lb />Minnesota where I had the opportu-<lb />nity to speak to a student leadership<lb />conference about Black empower-<lb />ment. My message was that far<lb />from it being the case that Blacks<lb />should remain loyal to the<lb />Democratic Party, as most Black<lb />leaders (mostly Democrats) are<lb />advising, it was time for the Black<lb />community to join up with the<lb />independent movement. In<lb />Minnesota that meant the Reform<lb />Party whose candidate, Jesse<lb />Ventura, was just elected Governor.<lb /><lb />You all know the Ventura story.<lb />A major upset on the Democrats<lb />and Republicans. Ventura got 46%<lb />of voters ages 18 to 29. Forty<lb />percent of those with an income of<lb />less than $15,000 annually, and a<lb />similar percentage from all but the<lb />top income group. Thirty-three<lb />percent of Democrats voted for him<lb />and 28% of Republicans. He drew<lb />most heavily from voters who<lb />consider themselves to be liberal,<lb />44%--or moderate, 40%. Black<lb />leaders in the state have told me<lb />that Ventura got a significant<lb />portion of the Black vote, though I<lb /><lb />ve seen no exit polls which give<lb />a percentage. Ventura was the<lb />populist candidate who united di-<lb />verse constituencies behind an<lb />anti-establishment, pro-political re-<lb />form message.<lb /><lb />I got to Minnesota just several<lb />weeks after a controversy between<lb />some Black leaders and the new<lb />governor had hit the news. Leaders<lb />of the Coalition of Black Churches<lb />in Minneapolis had requested a<lb /><lb />Randolph Staten.<lb /><lb />ately got into an intense discussion.<lb />Rev. Staten was upset with Ventura.<lb />He felt that he was being hostile to<lb />the Black community by refusing to<lb />meet. I told Rev. Staten, with all<lb />due respect, that I didn't think that<lb />Gov. Ventura was hostile to the<lb />Black community. I thought we<lb />weren't even on his radar screen. I<lb />asked whether he and the other<lb />Black leadership had done any-<lb />thing to support Ventura's run. He<lb />said no they hadn't taken it<lb />seriously. They thought it was a<lb />joke.<lb />I told him that Ventura's candi-<lb />dacy and independent politics was<lb />not a joke, and that at least some<lb />portion of the Black community<lb />didn't think so either, because they<lb />had voted for him without the<lb />endorsement of Black leaders. He<lb />said that Ventura had to meet to<lb />show his interest in the Black<lb />community. I told the Reverend<lb />that his concept of doing politics<lb />was how Black leaders do politics<lb />in the Democratic party--demand to<lb />be noticed, get some token ac-<lb />knowledgment, a few jobs for Black<lb />Democrats, but no real power for<lb />the Black community.<lb /><lb />I welcomed it. This is just what the<lb /><lb />Black community needs to be<lb /><lb />talking about. At the end, 25<lb /><lb />students signed up to join Reform.<lb />For Black folks, i<lb /><lb />Minnesota and nationally. If Black<lb />leaders want to get Jesse Ventura's<lb />attention, how about announcing<lb />they're going i<lb />about going out and joining the<lb />Reform Party, signing up their<lb />congregations to leave the<lb />Democratic Party and join the<lb />Reform Party and launching a voter<lb />enrollment drive to bring young<lb />Blacks into independeat litics. I<lb />guarantee you if Rev. Staten did<lb />that, he'd have 15 meetings with<lb />Gov. Ventura. But more impor-<lb />tantly, the Black community in this<lb />state would have made a leadership<lb />move to bring us into a new<lb />political coalition that has the<lb />potential to take us somewhere.<lb /><lb />I shared this conversation with<lb />the students at Mankato State and<lb />as soon as the discussion period<lb />opened, a fight broke out over my<lb />posture toward the Black leadership<lb />and Ventura. The dialogue was<lb />heated and intense (and included<lb />several barbs at former Minnesota<lb />Congressman Tim Penny who was<lb />my guest at the event, and who is<lb />an informal advisor to Ventura) and<lb /><lb />creating<lb />politics for us and all Americans.<lb /><lb />of gesture and<lb /><lb />places--hasn't helped the<lb /><lb />must be our goal.<lb /><lb />Lenora B. Yet we<lb />still seem to lack a certain identity.<lb />Once we were Colored, Negro,<lb />Black, and now African American.<lb />But what is an African American?<lb /><lb />I realize that, according to text<lb /><lb />African decent, and I'm equally<lb />sure that when deciding to change<lb />our name to African American,<lb />someone thought they were restor-<lb />ing a type of pride and dignity we<lb />lost during slavery. But are we<lb />really African American?<lb /><lb />Many young men and women<lb />don't think so. When asked the<lb />question, "What do you know about<lb />Africa or Africa's history," many<lb />did not respond to the question,<lb />often being too embarrassed to<lb />admit their lack of knowledge<lb />concerning their African heritage.<lb />Others simply didn't care.<lb /><lb />One of our country's greatest<lb />strengths has been our open door<lb />policy concerning other nationali-<lb />ties. We have allowed a mixture of<lb />people to come take part in the<lb /><lb />i] wealth and growth of this country,<lb /><lb />allowing them freedom of religion,<lb />grants and citizenship. As their<lb /><lb />I] children are born in this country,<lb /> Wy they too are considered American,<lb />iW] whether it be Mexican-American,<lb />:}] Japanese-American, etc. They en-<lb />1 Joy the same affirmative action<lb />Hi tights as African Americans, yet<lb />HH] have a strong realization of who<lb /><lb />they are and, more  importantly,<lb />where they come:: from. Most<lb />nationalities have a country to<lb />which they can trace their roots<lb />with full knowledge of their history<lb />and understanding of their culture.<lb />What about African Americans ?<lb />Unless you are truly an African,<lb />as in from Africa, there is no other<lb />country in which African<lb />Americans can return with knowl-<lb />edge and understanding of, or even<lb />a place where we can maintain the<lb /><lb />same culture and heritage we have<lb /><lb />Sie<lb /><lb />Are<lb />African-  "<lb />Americans _<lb />i |<lb />product of<lb />White America?<lb /><lb />come to know here in America.<lb />This has prompted several con-<lb />troversial questions. Are African<lb />Americans a product of White<lb />America ? Will Black America be<lb />able to maintain a separate identity<lb />in America? Most importantly,<lb />what type of heritage will future<lb />generations embrace: the one we<lb />realize extends from Africa, or the<lb />one only we have come to know? In<lb />talking with several people some of<lb />older generations and others of<lb />Generation X, it is clear that there<lb />is a difference of opinion. Beyond a<lb />shadow of a doubt, younger Black<lb />American realize that we are<lb />Blacks living in America; even<lb />with obstacles such as racism and<lb />prejudice, we can still accomplish<lb />most anything. Although no one<lb />believes themselves to be a product<lb /><lb />of anyone else's culture, the influ-<lb />ences of White America on Black<lb />America go without saying.<lb />Whether it be the type of food we<lb />eat, our education or even our<lb />values, the impact of White<lb />America is clear.<lb /><lb />But what is the fate of future<lb />generations? As our country grows<lb />and as we continue to embrace<lb />other nationalities, the future will<lb />no longer involve a Black or White<lb />America. As our children's children<lb />take leadership, I strongly believe<lb />the heritage they will embrace will<lb />be that of this country, with perhaps<lb />a thought of the racism and<lb />we endured to build it. Also, being<lb />that Generation X is truly a unique<lb />generation being brought up in the<lb />aftermath of the civil rights move-<lb />ment, not having to endure segre-<lb />gation and many of us enjoying the<lb />benefits of affirmative action, our<lb />way of thinking is dramatically<lb />different from past generations.<lb /><lb />So I have to wonder, how will<lb />future Black generations view<lb />themselves? When all is said and<lb />done, what name will they feel best<lb />describes our race, our heritage,<lb />and our culture? How much of that<lb />will they think is truly a reflection<lb />of Africa?<lb /><lb />ECU Thespians of Diversity<lb /><lb />Presents<lb />"BLACK VOICES FROM THE PAST:<lb />A Celebration of History and the Black Woman"<lb /><lb />Written and Directed By:<lb /><lb />Dr. Reginald Watson<lb />(Behind Every Good Man is an Excellent Woman)<lb /><lb />WHERE: Mendenhall Rm 244<lb />WHEN: Tuesday March 30,1999<lb />TIME: 7:30 P.M.<lb /><lb />COST: $3.00<lb />$2.00 (for children under the age of 12)<lb /><lb />NEW OR USED " " Sg =<lb /><lb />* No Credit<lb />* Bad Credit<lb /><lb />* Established<lb />Credit<lb /><lb />Use your tax return<lb />money toward<lb />the purchase of<lb /><lb />nv<lb />; |<lb /> oWinning the World Over T<lb /><lb />L DIXON, JR.<lb />SALE REPRESENTATIVE<lb /><lb />HASTINGS FORD<lb />3013 E. 10 TH Street<lb />Greenville, NC 27834<lb /><lb />your Dream Car!<lb /><lb />Bus: (252) 758-0114<lb />Toll Free: 1-800-654-3429<lb />Fax: (252) 353-9229<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb /> oThe Minority Voice: March 19 - March 31, 1999<lb /><lb />By Mrs, Beatrice Maye<lb />(information provided from<lb />Etiquette by Emily Post)<lb /><lb />America is made up of many<lb />ethnic groups and many religious<lb />faiths. Inevitably this causes a<lb />certain amount of strife and tension<lb />at times, which can almost invaria-<lb />bly be traced to lack of knowledge<lb />or to misunderstanding. If we only<lb />had the wisdom to recognize that,<lb />and the tolerance to accept other<lb />people's religious practices in the<lb />same spirit we exhibit toward our<lb />own, our lives would be greatly<lb />enriched. If parents understood the<lb />importance of instilling the Golden<lb />Rule deep in their children's hearts<lb />much of the belligerence and<lb />selfishness in the world would<lb /><lb />sappear.<lb /><lb />Since all religions seek to im-<lb />prove man's condition and to<lb />achieve the ultimate good, children<lb />should be taught that every other<lb />religion, as well as their own,<lb /><lb />merits not only the devotion of its<lb />followers but the respect of people<lb />of other faiths. A knowledge of the<lb />information contained in this arti-<lb /><lb />cle will help you with problems that<lb /><lb />you encounter in your own church,<lb />and also in your contacts with<lb />members of other religions.<lb /><lb />SUNDAY SERVICE<lb /><lb />CLOTHING:<lb /><lb />Although clothing restrictions<lb />for church have been greatly re-<lb />laxed in recent years, the correct<lb />dress is still conservative. Even<lb />today women do not wear slacks or<lb />shorts to conventional church serv-<lb />ices.<lb /><lb />Hats are no longer required in:<lb />any of the Christian churches, but<lb />in Orthodox Jewish synagogues<lb />married women are required to<lb />wear some form of head covering--<lb />even a wig. Many women still fell<lb />more at ease wearing a hat or veil<lb />at regular services, and older<lb />Catholic women, who grew up on<lb />the days when the hats were<lb />required, rarely enter a church<lb />without at least a scarf over their<lb />heads. In any case it is always to<lb />wear a hat to church, and if you<lb />like to wear them and feel that they<lb />are becoming to you, by all means<lb />do so. Don't let the fact that you are<lb />in the minority make you uncom-<lb />fortable.<lb /><lb />Men never wear hats in<lb />Christian churches--they always do<lb />in synagogues.<lb /><lb />Gloves are worn less often than<lb />they used to be and generally only<lb />when the weather is cold. However,<lb />even in summer, light cotton or<lb />nylon gloves  odress up" your<lb />costume, and they are always<lb />correct. In the past gloves were kept<lb />on all during the church service--<lb /><lb />today they are removed. It is far<lb />easier to turn the pages of the<lb />hymnal or prayer book without<lb />gloves on, and in those faiths where<lb /><lb />the communion wafer is placed on<lb />the palm, gloves must be removed<lb />before going to the altar.<lb /><lb />SEATING:<lb /><lb />When there are ushers at a<lb />service, all members of the congre-<lb />gation are escorted to a pew,<lb />although the women do not take the<lb />usher Ts arm as they do at a<lb />wedding. The usher leads the way<lb />to a vacant seat and stands aside<lb />while the arrival--whether single or<lb />a couple--steps in. Women precede<lb />their husbands into the pew, going<lb />in far enough to allow room for<lb />him--and for children or others<lb />who may be with them. Early<lb />arrivals at a wedding or first<lb />communion keep the choice<lb />seats on the aisle so that they can<lb />see the proceedings, but at weekly<lb />services, those who are already in<lb />the pews should move over to make<lb />room for later arrivals, rather than<lb />force the newcomers to climb over<lb />them.<lb /><lb />When a couple leaves their pew<lb />to go to the altar for communion,<lb />they need not "switch." The hus-<lb />band steps out and walks to the<lb />communion rail; his wife follows<lb />him. They return in whichever<lb />order is most practical, although,<lb />again, the man lets the woman go<lb />into the pew first.<lb /><lb />THE OFFERING<lb />Although there is no fixed rule<lb /><lb />about it, a husband generally puts<lb />the offering into the plate for both<lb />himself and his wife. When a man<lb />takes a girl friend to his church he<lb />contributes for both of them, but<lb />when a woman asks a man to go to<lb /><lb />a service with her they generally<lb />each make a contribution.<lb /><lb />BEHAVIOR .IN CHURCH OR<lb />SYNAGOGUE<lb /><lb />Reverence is the quality that<lb /><lb />ides one's behavior at all relig-<lb />ious services, and while it is<lb />expressed in various ways, in most<lb />faiths quiet, attentiveness, and dig-<lb />nity are the ingredients.<lb /><lb />It is perfectly correct to nod,<lb />smile, wave at acquaintances before<lb />a service starts, and if a friends sits<lb />down next to you or in front of you,<lb />you may certainly lean over and<lb />whisper "Hello." You should not,<lb />however, carry on a_ prolonged<lb />conversation, giggle, gossip, or<lb />otherwise make yourself objection-<lb />able to others around you.<lb />Introductions, too, should wait until<lb />after the service.<lb /><lb />Occasionally a group of young<lb />people sitting together will forget<lb />themselves--and their neighbors. If<lb />their whispering and laughing<lb />becomes distracting and annoying,<lb />you have a fight--in fact an<lb />obligation--to remind them of<lb />where they are. If they refuse to<lb />listen or pay attention to you, you<lb />should, after the service, report<lb />their behavior to the clergyman.<lb /><lb />The roof of the church, in<lb />somewhat the same was as does a<lb />hostess's roof at her home, provides<lb />an excuse for strangers to become<lb />friends. Although you are not<lb />expected to speak to people you do<lb />not know at each service, those who<lb />attend regularly and recognize each<lb />other should feel free to chat<lb />casually after the services. Also, in<lb />small congregations it is both<lb />proper and friendly to greet a<lb />visitor who you know is not a<lb />regular member of the congrega-<lb /><lb />tion.<lb /><lb />parish<lb /><lb />church of one faith to another, 4t is<lb />only courteous to inform the clergy-<lb />man of your old church, or at least<lb />the parish secretary. In some de-<lb />inati parish is assessed<lb />according to the number of regis-<lb />tered members, and therefore its<lb />financial condition can be harmed<lb />if a member who moves away is<lb />stilled enrolled but not contribut-<lb />ing.<lb />If your desire to make a change<lb />is due to the fact that you are not<lb />getting what you think you should<lb /><lb />m your particular faith, or<lb />perhaps your views are not com-<lb />patible with those of the clergyman,<lb />your problem is more difficult. You<lb />owe him an explanation of your<lb />reasons for changing parishes,<lb />either by letter or in person.<lb />Although it may be difficult try to<lb />be very honest and clear, because<lb />while he may be hurt or upset at the<lb />time, your criticisms and comments<lb />may help him to see some of his<lb />failings and to serve his congrega-<lb />tion better.<lb /><lb />ATTENDING A SERVICE OF<lb />ANOTHER FAITH<lb /><lb />When you have an opportunity<lb />to visit a church of another faith, or<lb />a synagogue if you are a Christian,<lb />do so. It is a broadening and<lb />enriching experience, and you will<lb />come away with more understand-<lb />ing of people whose beliefs are<lb />different from yours. If you are<lb />secure and sincere in your own<lb />beliefs, attending another service<lb /><lb />with an open mind will strengthen,<lb />rather than weaken, them.<lb /><lb />Unless some part of the service<lb />is opposed to your religious convic-<lb /><lb />when they stand, sing when they<lb />sing, pray when they pray. If there<lb />part in which you do not wish<lb />participate, simply sit quietly<lb />til that portion of the service is<lb />tr.<lb /><lb />A Protestant need not cross<lb />himself nor genuflect when he<lb />enters his pew in a Catholic church.<lb />No one must kneel if his custom is<lb />to pray seated in the pew. All he<lb />need do is bend forward and bow<lb />his head. But insofar as the<lb />proceedings are not objectionable to<lb />you, you will get more from the<lb />strange service, and perhaps be<lb />more comfortable, if you do as the<lb />others are doing.<lb /><lb />Christian men keep their hats on<lb />in synagogues--there are yarmulkas<lb />available to visitors who come<lb />without a hat.<lb /><lb />If you are taking communion in<lb />a church that is strange to you,<lb />watch what the congregation does<lb />and follow their lead. You will<lb />derive the same comfort and<lb />strength from the Host whether you<lb />receive it at the altar rail as do<lb />Catholics and Episcopalians and<lb />certain other communicants, or it is<lb />passed to you in the pew as in<lb />Presbyterian and some other<lb />Protestant churches.<lb /><lb />When you attend church while<lb />you are away from home, you<lb />should make a contribution when<lb />the offering plate is passed. Even<lb />though you have contributed your<lb />full share to your home parish your<lb />donation is a way of saying "Thank<lb />you" to the church you are visiting.<lb />Also, while the larger part of your<lb /><lb />offering may go to that particullit<lb /><lb />church a percentage goes to the<lb />church as a whole and helps in its<lb /><lb />support.<lb /><lb /> = , i<lb /><lb />@liiae your<lb /><lb />mind has an<lb /><lb />new idea, I<lb /><lb />by Dr. George A. Hawkins<lb /><lb />The Apostles, although un-<lb />learned men, were evidently of<lb />strong character, and, under the<lb /><lb />' Lords teachings, their lack of<lb /><lb />worldly wisdom and education was<lb />more than compensated for in the<lb />spirit of a sound mind.<lb /><lb />The duty of the Apostles was<lb />one of service--- they were to serve<lb />one another, to serve the Lord, and<lb />to lay down their lives for the<lb />brethren. These services were to be<lb />rendered especially in connection<lb /><lb />with the promotion of the Gospel.<lb />They were partakers of the pre-<lb />anointing that had already come<lb />upon their Master-- the same<lb />anointing which pertains to all of<lb />the Royal Priesthood, and is de-<lb />scribed by the prophet, saying: The<lb />Spirit of the Lord is upon me<lb />because he hath anointed me to<lb />preach good tidings unto the<lb />meek....to bind up the broken-<lb /><lb />hearted..... (Isiah 61: 1, 2; Luke 4:<lb />17-21).<lb />Although this anointing did not<lb /><lb />come directly upon them until<lb /><lb />Pentecost, they had previously had<lb />a foretaste of it in that the Lord<lb />conferred upon them a share of His<lb />Holy Spirit power when he sent<lb />them out to preach. But even in<lb />this, special opportunity for pride<lb />was taken away when later on our<lb />Lord sent seventy others forth to do<lb />a similar work and empowered<lb />them to perform miracles in His<lb />name. The real work of the<lb />Apostles did not, therefore, begin<lb />in the proper sense of the word<lb />until they had received the Holy<lb />Spirit at Pentecost. There, a special<lb /><lb />manifestation of divine power was<lb />conferred upon them-- not only the<lb />Holy Spirit and gifts of the Spirit,<lb />but also, and especially, power to<lb />bestow these gifts upon others who<lb />distinguished themselves from all<lb />others of the church. Other believ-<lb />ers were counted in as members of<lb />the anointed of Christ, and<lb />made partakers of His Spirit to the<lb />newness of life. However, none<lb />could have a gift and special<lb />manifestation except as conferred<lb />through these Apostles.<lb /><lb />These gifts of miracles, tongues,<lb /><lb />interpretation of tongues, etc., in no<lb />sense took the place of the fruits of<lb />the Holy Spirit, yet they did mark<lb />the Apostles as special servants or<lb />representatives of the Lord in the<lb />work of founding the church. Kids like them and moms<lb />buy them. But do they know that<lb />these packaged meals are high in<lb />fat, sodium and sugar?<lb /><lb />Shari Bilt, a dietician with New<lb />York Weill Cornell Center in New<lb />York City, points out that meals<lb />like Lunchables are convenient,<lb />require no preparation, and they're<lb />appealing to kids.<lb /><lb />and it's not very healthy."<lb /><lb />Claire Reegan, of Oscar Meyer,<lb />which makes Lunchables, re-<lb />sponds:  oLunchables make lunch<lb />easy for busy moms and fun for<lb />kids. They should be eaten in<lb />moderation. No one suggests they<lb />should be eaten every day, no more<lb />than an adult should eat a steak<lb />dinner every day. But as an<lb />occasional choice, they're perfectly<lb />fine. All foods should be eaten in<lb />moderation. For moms who want to<lb />go that route we do offer low fat<lb /><lb />But, she says, if you look at them versions."<lb /><lb />more closely you'll see that their<lb />portions of meat and cheese are<lb />small. That will leave many kids<lb />hungry in the afternoons, so they'll<lb />go for junk food.<lb /><lb />Even more important, Bilt also<lb />notes these lunches are high in<lb />saturated fat, the kind that's bad for<lb />your heart. They're also high in<lb />sugar and salt and provide no<lb />dietary fiber or fresh fruits or<lb />vegetables, all things kids should<lb />be eating.<lb /><lb />Says Bilt, "A baloney and cheese<lb /><lb />Lunchables has as much fat as a<lb />McDonalds cheeseburger and fries,<lb />as much sugar as three peanut<lb />butter cups and as much salt as six<lb />individual size bags of chips."<lb />Some of the lunch packs come<lb /><lb />with a drink and desert, that also<lb />poses a problem. The drinks in-<lb />cluded are usually high in sugar<lb />and low in nutritional value. Worse<lb />yet, it means kids aren't having<lb />milk with their lunch. Milk is an<lb />important part of a child's diet. And<lb />they're not cheap, either. The ones<lb /><lb />with a drink and candy cost<lb />between $2.39 and $2.79.<lb /><lb />The calorie range of 350 to 550<lb />isn't. bad for elementary school<lb />kids, Bilt says. But, she adds, it's<lb />where the calories are coming from<lb />that matters.<lb /><lb />As an alternative, Bilt suggests a<lb /><lb />turkey and cheese sandwich on<lb />whole wheat bread, carrots and<lb />some low fat cookies. This meal<lb />has about 450 calories but only 7<lb /><lb />of fat and and it includes 8<lb /><lb />of fiber. Bilt suggests you<lb />use plastic containers _ like<lb />Tupperware that are divided into<lb />sections, much ike those pre-<lb /><lb />ckaged lunches have.<lb /><lb />pe wThe truth is,  says Bilt, "if you<lb />want your child to eat a healthy<lb /><lb />lunch. you'll have to spend some<lb />ene preparing it. Families are the backbone of<lb />our country because of the critical<lb />role they play in the physical,<lb />spiritual, emotional and social de-<lb />velopment of children--who grow<lb />up to raise families of their own.<lb />With this in mind, it is understand-<lb />able that civic, religious and politi-<lb />cal leaders fret over the dramatic<lb />social, demographic and economic<lb />changes society has endured.<lb />Families today are confronted by<lb />challenges that did not exist a<lb />generation ago. Consider that the<lb /><lb />non-school hours. The increased<lb />time spent at work has reduced the<lb />time parents can devote to their<lb />families.<lb />For African Americans, more<lb />children are raised by a single-<lb />nt than in homes where there is<lb />th a mother and father to share<lb />the burden. Research from sociolo-<lb />gists indicates that the likelihood of<lb />a young male to engage in criminal<lb />activity doubles if he is raised<lb />without a father. Similarly, the<lb />prevalence of delinquency among<lb />children from broken homes is 10<lb /><lb />no guarantee that a child will be<lb />raised in a nurturing environment.<lb />Marriage alone does not ensure that<lb /><lb />a budget appropriately, | ;<lb />lems, deal with the special needs of<lb />adolescents, or make good choices<lb />every day.<lb /><lb />Regardless of the structure, fam-<lb />ily stability can be strengthened if<lb />parents develop strategies and a<lb />network of resources to cope with<lb />the demands placed upon them.<lb />Providing such a network is the<lb />objective of the National Black<lb />Family Summit. For. the past 13<lb />years, the University of South<lb />Carolina's College of Social Work<lb />and the Columbia, S.C., Urban<lb />League have endeavored to raise<lb />awareness about the depravation<lb />under pressure. Since 1986 these<lb />two entities have been the driving<lb />force behind the annual summit.<lb /><lb />The National Black Family<lb />Summit is built upon a foundation<lb />that recognizes that the importance<lb />of family is not new to African<lb />Americans. The crises that chal-<lb />lenge families usually are the result<lb />of external pressures, not from any<lb />inherent weakness.<lb /><lb />That is why the summit is such<lb />an important event. The National<lb />Black Family Summit has as its<lb />goal educating participants about<lb />critical problems and issues imped-<lb />ing the survival and progress of<lb /><lb />economic i<lb />for<lb /><lb />mountable obstacles are shared.<lb />Consider the National Black<lb /><lb />The National Black Famil<lb />Summit, which will be held Marc<lb /><lb />that deserves _ this<lb /><lb />the Summit's home<lb />http://www.csd.sc.cosw/nbfs99.ht-<lb /><lb />at (803) 777-4309.<lb /><lb />ment, overcoming adversity and<lb />stability. Anyone<lb /><lb />seeking more information about<lb /><lb />attending the summit should visit<lb />ge at<lb /><lb />mil or contact Dr. Augustus Rodgers<lb /><lb />I have come to the conclusion<lb />that there is a major problem in<lb />men and women's relationships and<lb />commitments today: God has taken<lb />a back seat in most American<lb />families. I believe the average<lb />American family has no morals, no<lb />standards. Without standards, we<lb />have no foundation to build rela-<lb />tionships with others.<lb /><lb />It all begins with love for the<lb />immediate family. If a man or<lb />women doesn't have a good founda-<lb /><lb /> tion with his parents, sisters and<lb /><lb />brothers, then it is literally impossi-<lb />ble for them to have a good<lb />relationship with their spouse, or<lb />whomever they fall in love with. I<lb />believe that, until men begin to<lb />gain respect for women, it will be<lb />hard to ey and harmony<lb />of a happy y.<lb /><lb />Over the years, I have often<lb />heard women say, "Where are the<lb />good men?" My answer to them is,<lb /><lb />Be a good woman, and a good<lb />man will find you." Likewise, if a<lb />man says, "I want a good woman",<lb />then I would suggest that he<lb />prepare himself as a good man.<lb /><lb />The only path to being a good<lb />person is to be honest with yourself,<lb />and recognize where you are<lb />within yourself. It's funny when<lb />someone thinks they are always<lb />right, but it takes real courage for<lb />one to admit when they are wrong.<lb />As a man, I sometimes find it hard<lb />to face my own failures, shortcom-<lb />ings, and feelings of inferiority. But<lb /><lb />tram responsi Thi is what the<lb />"Tl am " is. is what<lb /><lb />American woman is looking for<lb />today in men: that sense of<lb /><lb />rR thin<lb /><lb />Another thing a woman looks<lb />for in a man is security. Whether<lb />it's mental or physical, both men<lb />and women want to be secure, but<lb />one has to be secure within ones<lb />self first.<lb /><lb />One such example involves one's<lb />attitude. I personally believe that<lb />90% of a person is his/her attitude.<lb />I've seen the wrong attitude make<lb /><lb />or break an individual. The wrong<lb /><lb />attitude will ra Mar relation-<lb />ship, whether it's family, friends,<lb />whatever. I'm speaking strictly<lb /><lb />from a personal standpoint. |<lb />remind myself that this is the<lb />beginning of success or failure of a<lb />relationship. You may think the<lb />word  oattitude  is a very inconse-<lb />quential word, but it is the differ-<lb />ence between success and failure,<lb />or love and hate. It takes<lb />virtually no effort to love. Love<lb />means that when there's nothing for<lb />you and me, will we feel the same<lb />way towards any situation, as if we<lb />had everything?<lb /><lb />But I have come to another<lb />conclusion, that love in the '90's is<lb />based on the two-story house with<lb />the picket fence, the poodle, and<lb />the Lexus in the garage. To make a<lb />long story short, our society has<lb />become too materialistic, contrary<lb />to what we think or believe. For<lb />example, losing your $30,000 a<lb />year salary; not being able to sport<lb /><lb />average American child watches percent to 15 percent higher than : ,<lb />vec: on ion Spe: OR sare tone pvdes | Casha | Seks a craeciso Tony ig ais ou Alpe<lb />ST  he 6lb.- $2.50 $4.95 REG. tarting al OW. ° know your purpose. He left<lb />the North Carolina area to reside in<lb />Union, New Jersey, where he<lb />started his first transmission repair<lb />shop. He expanded two transmis-<lb />sion shops in New Jersey that are<lb />presently being managed by his<lb />brothers. He then returned to North<lb />Carolina and opened American<lb />Transmission.<lb />As a single parent, he didn't only<lb /><lb />raise his children, but adopted<lb />other children. He became a mentor<lb />for many. Mr. Higgs is a hard<lb />working man with strong family<lb />values.<lb /><lb />Soon after relocating to<lb />Greenville, he met and has grown<lb />to cherish the friendship of the<lb />outgoing SCLC president, Mr.<lb />Bennie Rountree; Mr. Rountree<lb />became a father figure and a<lb />mentor to Mr. Higgs and Mr. Higgs<lb />loves and respects him dearly.<lb />Following in the footsteps of Mr.<lb />Rountree for many years took him<lb />many places, including the White<lb />House. Since its<lb />inception, NABOB has grown into<lb />a major trade association represent-<lb /><lb />ing the interests of 165 Black-<lb />owned commerical radio stations<lb />and 21 commercial television sta-<lb />tions. Additionally, NABOB counts<lb />among its associate membership:<lb />law firms, station brokers, narional<lb />rep firms, financial institutions and<lb />a variety of other organizations<lb />involved in broadcasting, cable<lb />television and common carrier<lb />services.<lb /><lb />As the voice of the African-<lb />American broadcasting industry,<lb />NABOB has been instrumental in<lb />shaping national government and<lb />industry politics to improve the<lb />opportunities for African-American<lb />and all other minority station<lb />owners.<lb /><lb />Will Smith stars in movie remake of "The Wild, Wild West"<lb /><lb />Now this is a story all about how<lb />his life got flip turned upside-down<lb />and I'd like to take a moment, just<lb />sit right there, I'm going to tell you<lb /><lb /> bout how he became the Prince of<lb />Bel-Air.<lb /><lb />Or, perhaps that should be, "the<lb />artist formerly known as the Fresh<lb />Prince of Bel-Air.<lb /><lb />Mr. Jiggy, perhaps?<lb /><lb />Whatever you call him, one<lb />thing is clear about the 30-year-old<lb /><lb />actor/rapper/song-writer.....his<lb />middle name must be "superstar."<lb /><lb />While growing up in<lb />Philadelphia, Smith was seen as a<lb />pretty much good student student<lb />on the path to becoming a computer<lb />engineer. But, as he describes it,<lb />one day he discovered something<lb />amazing: he could get girls to like<lb />him if he was funny. So, he started<lb />hamming it up.<lb /><lb />Of course, he didn't just need to<lb />use his sense of humor to woo the<lb />ladies, of course. It helped that his<lb />first album had sold while he was<lb />still in high school, rocketing his<lb />popularity in school straight to the<lb />top.<lb /><lb />"There's nothing like being in<lb />high school with a hit record,"<lb />Smith says. "You can really chill at<lb />the prom."<lb /><lb />The next few years were a roller<lb />coaster ride of Grammys, expensive<lb />cars, and money to burn......until<lb />the money ran out. The first million<lb /><lb />dollars that Smith had earned had<lb />all been spent. "Suddenly I had six<lb />cars but I didn't have enough<lb />money for gas," he says.<lb /><lb />Smith regrouped. When he was<lb />offered the chance to do The Fresh<lb />Prince of Bel-Air, he vowed to be<lb />smarter this time around. He<lb />learned about money management.<lb />As The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<lb />gained in popularity, Smith's<lb />money was managed wisely.<lb /><lb />But his career, as impressive as<lb />it was, didn't end there. Starring in<lb />the hit movies Bad Boys,<lb />Independence Day, Men In Black,<lb />and Enemy of the State, took his<lb />career even further. Not that he's<lb />given up on his music: his latest<lb />album, Big Willie Style, was a huge<lb /><lb />Mis latest project, the movie<lb />remake of the old television series<lb /><lb />Wild Wild West, stars Smith in the<lb />lead role of Federal Marshal Jim<lb />Kline<lb /><lb />West. The planned release date<lb />for Wild Wild West is July 4.<lb /><lb />But, stardom aside, how does<lb />Smith translate from the big screen<lb />to the real world? After his first<lb />marriage ended in divorce, Smith is<lb />now happily married to actress Jada<lb />Pinkett-Smith. But, when it came<lb />time for their son to be born, was<lb />The Fresh Prince still "jiggy with<lb />it?"<lb /><lb />"It was 11 p.m. when her water<lb />broke and I just lost it," Smith<lb />laughs. "Oh, it was bad. The flop<lb />sweat stared pouring off of me."<lb /><lb />"We live an hour outside the city,<lb />which is a little tough. I'm going,<lb />like, 120 miles per hour down the<lb />freeway," he says. "I'm scouring the<lb />dashboard trying to do that Men In<lb /><lb />Black move where I hit that little<lb />red button that makes the car drive<lb />sideways between traffic.<lb /><lb />How did the big movie star hold<lb />up when his son actually arrived?<lb />Smith actually looks sheepish as he<lb />responds. "No, I didn't exactly<lb />faint. Come on, I've seen Alien and<lb />Aliens." He immediately puts out a<lb />message to his wife: "Honey, I am<lb />still really sorry, but I only took a<lb />nap because you were so busy!"<lb /><lb />Even though he ended up<lb />stretched out flat on the floor of the<lb />delivery room, Smith's meteoric<lb />rise to success still continues.<lb /><lb />"I might want to become the<lb />President of the United States," he<lb />says with an evil grin. "I am the<lb />most confident man you know and<lb />I think I can do anything."<lb /><lb />How would he handle his oppo-<lb />nents? "Back off," Smith acts out<lb />the debate.
