BANKS<lb /><lb />News fo<lb /><lb />Home Delivery 5<lb /><lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA TS MINORITY VOICE SINCE 1981<lb /><lb />ian 2 6 (959<lb />ve .<lb /><lb />The fine dilemmas of Black leaders"<lb /><lb />By EARL OFARI<lb />HUTCHINSON<lb />__ (NNPA)<lb /><lb />Nearly a half-century ago,<lb />white, Southern-orn writer<lb />Robert Penn Warren asked,<lb /> oWho speaks for the Negro? ?<lb />The question was, and will<lb />always be, silly and presumptu-<lb /><lb />438. No one asks who speaks for<lb />ites, Latinos or Asians. No<lb /><lb />one tndividual or organization |<lb /><lb />can speak for an entire group.<lb />The notion of a common leader-<lb />ship for Blacks feeds more than |<lb />an ageless myth. It exposes |<lb />major dilemmas confronting<lb />Black leaders.<lb />. This presents the first major<lb />dilemma fay Black leaders:<lb />~ The latent class division has<lb />burst. into gasping fissures<lb /><lb />between two Black Americas.<lb />One is poor, desperate and<lb />angry, while the other is pros-<lb />perous, comfortable and com-<lb />placent. Facing this crisis, many<lb />mainstream Black leaders have<lb />backpedaled. The NAACP,<lb />Urban League and SCLC have<lb /><lb /> replaced the nickels and dimes<lb /><lb />it received in support from<lb /><lb />Blacks for decades with corpo-<lb /><lb />rate and foundation dollars. And<lb /><lb />they have tailored their pro-<lb /><lb />grams to accelerate opportuni-<lb /><lb />ties for business persons and<lb /><lb />upward mobile professionals.<lb /><lb />The chase continues for SBA |<lb />loans, scholarships and grants<lb /><lb />to pricey universities, corporate<lb /><lb />managerial positions and sub- |<lb />urban homes. Unfortunately,<lb /><lb />the Black poor are nowhere to<lb /><lb />be found in that chase.<lb /><lb />This presents the second<lb />major dilemma for Black lead-<lb />ers: How to win political conces-<lb />sions from Democratic Party<lb />(or, if possible, the Republican<lb />Party) and for what and for<lb />whom should they win them?<lb /><lb />The sad truth is that Blacks<lb />have narrowed their political<lb />options down to essentially one:<lb />the Democratic Party. The<lb />result is many Black leaders<lb />have cradled even more cozily<lb />into the Democratic Party and<lb />pared their demands down to<lb />more party appointments and<lb />political offices. Some have<lb />become even more mainstream<lb />and less responsive to the need-<lb />iest and. most dispossessed in<lb />Black communities. These indi-<lb />viduals get less rather than<lb /><lb />_ more political representation.<lb /><lb />' relentlessly battered<lb /><lb />UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />This leads to the third major<lb />dilemma for many Black lead-<lb />ers: the challenge from Black<lb />conservatives. About one-third<lb />of Blacks publicly call them-<lb /><lb />selves conservative, and many °<lb /><lb />more privately agree with some,<lb />most or all of what conserva-<lb />tives have to say. They also<lb />know that the old-line civil<lb />rights leadership has been<lb />and<lb />bruised during the T80s and T90s<lb />by conservative politicians and<lb />for failing to mobilize the Black<lb />poor around the crisis problems<lb />of quality education, health-<lb />care, declining public services,<lb />police abuse, crime and drug<lb />destruction. These leaders have<lb />felt the criticism and wrath of<lb />many Blacks, who are mortally<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb /> "<lb /><lb />The Steering Committe...of York Memorial AME Zion Church |.<lb /><lb />ather here to welcome all their friends at the 13th Annual<lb />Conference which convened at York. Many leaders have<lb />knowingly played along, for<lb />personal ego strokes and mater-<lb />ial gain, with the media game of<lb />perpetuating the fraud of the<lb /> omonolithic Black community. ?<lb />The media shoves a ochosen<lb />Black spokesperson ? into the<lb />spotlight and pretends that<lb />issues not sanctioned by the<lb /> ochosen one ? are not issues. It is<lb />then free to ignore any and all<lb />local leaders, actions, agendas<lb />and causes it does not like.<lb />When Blacks reduce leadership<lb />to star and celebrity gazing,<lb />they pay a dear price.<lb /><lb />Now, the fifth major dilem-<lb />ma for Black leaders: young<lb />Blacks.<lb /><lb />Many young Blacks are con-<lb /><lb />Fhe Minor iy<lb /><lb />talon<lb /><lb />a<lb />Vou<lb /><lb />Issue Date: January 1999<lb /><lb />; among<lb /><lb />AINN VINITVOE0S L505<lb /><lb />311i<lb /><lb />: ee 2<lb />temptuous of the hypocrisy and<lb />corruption of many Black politi-<lb /><lb />/ Clans and organizations. They<lb /><lb />see some of them wrapped in<lb />scandals and seemingly end-<lb />lessly grasping for sex, cash and<lb />other creature comforts: Some<lb />young Blacks react by drifting "<lb />into social withdrawal. Others<lb />become true menaces to gociety<lb />and prey on their own commu-<lb />nities. Many mainstream Black<lb />leaders have no answers<lb />their plight. :<lb /><lb />The economic, social, politi-<lb />cal and generation schisms<lb />many African-<lb />Americans are broad.<lb />Mainstream Black leaders,<lb /> ogangsta ? rappers, hip-hop<lb />icons and Black conservatives<lb />are in an intense hunt to find<lb />workable programs and strate-<lb />gies to dea! with the crippling<lb />internal crisis of Blacks, young<lb />and old, rich and poor. Twenty<lb />years after Dr. Martin Luther King,<lb />Jr., uttered these words, Public Law<lb />98-144 was enacted, designating<lb />the third Monday in January as a<lb />Federal holiday commemorating<lb />Dr. King's birthday. George<lb />Washington is the only other<lb /><lb />American whose birthday has been<lb /><lb />RRO REA IS x5 eens<lb />SAPP PREPEPODFOOEE PELE E<lb /><lb />a Federal holiday.<lb /><lb />Since the first King holiday on<lb />January 20, 1986, the observance<lb />has been an occasion for people to<lb />remember Dr. King's life and<lb />dedicate themselves anew to imple-<lb />menting his dreams.<lb /><lb />KING'S EARLY LIFE<lb /><lb />Martin Luther King, Jr, was<lb />born on January 15, 1929, in<lb />Atlanta, Georgia.<lb /><lb />At a very young age, he was<lb />fascinated by watching his father,<lb />Martin Luther King, Sr., Pastor of<lb />Ebenezer Baptist Church in<lb />Atlanta, and other ministers control<lb />audiences with skillfully chosen<lb /><lb />So |e ie<lb /><lb />EDUCATION T.<lb /><lb />In September 1944, when he was<lb />only 15 years old, King entered<lb />Morehouse College in Atlanta,<lb />Georgia. At first; he was undecided<lb />as to his course of study. However,<lb /><lb />his experiences at Morehouse<lb />shaped his direction for life.<lb /><lb />According to Stephen B. Oates,<lb />in his book Let the<lb />Sound "The Life of Martin Luther<lb />King, Jr., King fell under the spell<lb />of Dr. Benjamin Mays, the college<lb />president...Mays challenged<lb />traditional view of Negro education<lb />as oaccommodation under protest"<lb />and championed it instead as<lb />liberation through knowledge.<lb />Education, he told his students,<lb />allowed the Negro to be intellectu-<lb />ally free; it was an instrument of<lb />social and personal renewal.<lb />Unlike most other Negro educators,<lb />Mays was active in the NAACP<lb />and spoke out against racial oppres-<lb />sion. He lashed the white church in<lb />particular as America's "most con-<lb />servative and hypocritical institu-<lb />tion."<lb /><lb />King was enormously impressed.<lb />He saw in Mays what he wanted "a<lb />real minister to be"--a rational man<lb />whose sermons were both spiritu-<lb />ally and intellectually stimulating,<lb />a moral man who was socially<lb />involved. Thanks largely to Mays,<lb />King realized that the ministry<lb />could be a respectable force for<lb />ideas, even for social protest. And<lb />so at seventeen King elected to<lb />become a Baptist minister, like his<lb />father and maternal grandfather<lb />before him.<lb /><lb />following<lb />years old,<lb />Morehouse College with a<lb /><lb />in sociology. He then studied for a<lb />B.A. degree. in divinity at Crozer<lb />Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania.<lb />This was his first experience in a<lb />northern, integrated school.<lb /><lb />While at Crozer, King attended a<lb />lecture by Dr. Mordecai W.<lb />Johnson, who was the presi of<lb />Howard University in Washington,<lb />DC. Dr. Johnson oexplained how<lb />Gandhi had forged Soul Force--the<lb />power of love or truth--into a<lb />mighty vehicle for social change."<lb />He " that the moral power of<lb />Gandhian nonviolence could im-<lb />prove race relations in America,<lb />too."<lb /><lb />King was mesmerized by<lb />Gandhi's concepts, and began read-<lb />ing profusely about his life and<lb />philosophy. = |<lb />Nonviolent resistance, Gandhi<lb />taught, meant noncooperation with<lb />evil, an idea he got from Thoreau,<lb />whose essay on civil disobedience<lb />"left a deep impression on me."<lb /><lb />..Gandhi, for his part, took<lb /><lb />Thoreau's theory and gave it practi-<lb />cal application in the form of<lb />strikes, boycotts, and protest<lb />marches, all conducted nonvio-<lb />lently and all predicated on love for<lb />the oppressor and a belief in divine<lb /><lb />justice. Gandhi's goal was not to<lb /><lb />defeat the British in India, but to<lb />redeem them through love, so as to<lb />avoid a legacy of bitterness.<lb /><lb />In fact, in 1929, Gandhi told a<lb />group of American Blacks: Let not<lb />the 12 million Negroes be ashamed<lb />of the fact that they are the<lb />grandchildren of slaves. There is<lb />no dishonour in being slaves.<lb />There is dishonour in being slave<lb />owners. But let us not think of<lb />honour or dishonour in connection<lb />with the past. Let us realize that<lb /><lb />pgee<lb />Ht<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />be<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />:<lb />F<lb /><lb />as a Ph.D. student in philosophy at<lb />Boston University. Thomas' order that Alabama had<lb />to cease using its voter registration<lb />form, stop rejecting applicants<lb />because of minor errors on their<lb /><lb />forms, and process 100 applicants |<lb /><lb />each day the registrars met.<lb />However. the situation turned more<lb /><lb />violent. and once again, the irony<lb />was driven home. ABC Network<lb />interrupted Judgment at<lb />Nuremberg, a movie about Nazi<lb />atrocities, to broadcast film of<lb />Alabama State Troopers' bloody<lb /><lb />assault on peaceful Black marchers.<lb /><lb />"Bloody Sunday," as it came to be<lb />called, prompted President<lb />Johnson's comments.<lb />What happened in Selma was an<lb />American tragedy The blows that<lb />were received, the blood that was<lb />shed, the life of the good man that<lb />was lost, must strengthen the<lb />determination of each of us to bring<lb />full and equal and exact justice to<lb />all of our people...<lb />It is wrong to do violence to<lb />ceful citizens in the street of<lb />their town. It is wrong to deny<lb />Americans the right to vote. It is<lb />wrong to deny any person full<lb />equality because of the color of his<lb /><lb />skin.<lb /><lb />THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT<lb />The actions of Selma and other<lb />southern cities to disenfranchise<lb />Blacks prompted the Johnson ad-<lb />ministration, on March 17, 1965, to<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />Mississippi, 28 counties in North<lb /><lb />Carolina, South Carolina, and<lb />Virginia.<lb />Major provisions of the law in-<lb /><lb />cluded banning the use of literacy<lb />tests; giving the Attorney General<lb />authority to supervise voter regis-<lb />tration in areas where a literacy test<lb />was in use as of November 1, 1964,<lb />or "where fewer than 50 percent of<lb />the voting age residents were<lb />registered to vote on that date or<lb />actually voted in the 1964<lb />Presidential election;" providing for<lb />criminal penalties for those who<lb />interfered with voting rights, and<lb />authorizing the Attorney General to<lb />prohibit the use of poll taxes as a<lb />prerequisite to voting.<lb /><lb />During the first five months of the<lb />law, close to 240,000 Blacks were<lb />added to the voter rolls in the<lb />South.<lb /><lb />MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE<lb /><lb />In early 1968, Memphis.<lb />Tennessee's sanitation workers,<lb />most of whom were Black, organ-<lb /><lb /> most of the 1,300 BI sanitation<lb />A big<lb /><lb />Tequested recogni<lb />the city, along with a contract<lb />providing for higher vege<lb />better working conditions. city<lb /><lb />and on Feb 12, 1968,<lb />workers went on strike.<lb />march was scheduled, and<lb />then rescheduled (due to the<lb />weather) for March 28, 1968. Dr.<lb />King went to Memphis to lead the<lb />march. However, some militant<lb />groups turned the march violent,<lb />prompting Dr. King to announce<lb />over a bullhorn to the crowd, "I will<lb />never lead a violent march so,<lb />please. call it off."<lb />Afterwards, King was very dis-<lb />traught that someone was killed<lb />during a march in which he was<lb />involved. He promised to return to<lb />Memphis in early April to lead a<lb />nonviolent march.<lb />Dr. King returned to Memphis on<lb />April 3. 1968. The followin<lb />night, on the balcony outside o<lb />room 306 at the Lorraine Motel,<lb />Dr. Martin Luther King.
