<lb />By Rob Scho,<lb />RALEIGH -- ene law passed by<lb />the North Carolina General<lb />Assembly in the final days of the<lb />1998 session may provide impor-<lb />tant new assistance to workers who<lb />are forced to leave their jobs<lb />because of domestic violence.<lb />While it may take some time for<lb />government officials and the courts<lb />to fully interpret and implement the<lb />change, it is clear that many<lb />victims may now seek unemploy-<lb />ment insurance benefits.<lb /><lb />THE PROBLEM .-- As society<lb />has become increasingly aware,<lb /><lb />Opinions & Comments<lb /><lb /> oBy Kisha Harris<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE -- In the carly<lb />years, we were taught in American<lb />society that women should stay<lb />home while men went out and<lb />found jobs to take care of the<lb />family. Society was not accustomed<lb />to women working and because of<lb />that. they were discriminated<lb />against. Fortunately. society's views<lb />have changed, but women are still<lb />being discriminated against when it<lb />comes to salary, appearance. and<lb />age.<lb /><lb />For example, a woman working<lb />in a company. doing the same job<lb />that a man is doing. performing<lb /><lb />Sincere thanks to all for your votes and.<lb />support. We had a great victory! We<lb /><lb />domestic violence is not just a<lb />problem for victims and their<lb />families. It can also be a serious<lb />problem for employers and co-<lb />workers of domestic violence vic-<lb />tims. If an abuser goes to the<lb />victim's workplace and attempts to<lb />attack his or her victim there, many<lb />other people might be placed at<lb />risk. Many employers have been<lb />forced to fire good employees<lb />because of the danger that is posed<lb />when yictims of domestic violence<lb />are contacted at work by their<lb />abusers. By the same token, many<lb />happily employed victims have<lb /><lb />been forced to quit their jobs in<lb />order to protect their friends and<lb />co-workers or because they are<lb />compelled to flee their home towns<lb />in order to escape continued abuse.<lb />Until now, North Carolina law<lb />offered no financial help to such<lb />victims. Because they were fired<lb />"for cause" or "voluntarily quit"<lb />their jobs, they could not receive<lb />North Carolina unemployment in-<lb />surance benefits during the time<lb />they tried to put their lives in order<lb />and search for new employment. In<lb />the past, many domestic violence<lb />victims have faced no other alterna-<lb /><lb />__ New State Law will Provide Unemployment Benefits for Some Vitins of<lb /><lb />tive than to apply for welfare benefits.<lb /><lb />THE SOLUTION - Under the<lb />terms of the new law, any otherwise<lb />eligible person who leaves a job or<lb />who is fired, as a result of domestic<lb />violence, will now be entitled to<lb />unemployment insurance benefits.<lb />Such a person must be "adjudged<lb />an aggrieved party as set forth in by<lb />Chapter 50B of the General<lb />Statutes." While it is not yet clear<lb />how generously this language will<lb />be interpreted, it is clear that if a<lb />person loses a job or must quit<lb />because of domestic violence com-<lb />mitted against her or him (or his or<lb /><lb />her child), that person can<lb />unemployment insurance benefits<lb />after they take two steps.<lb /><lb />First, the victim should get a<lb />domestic violence protection order<lb />(sometimes referred to as a "50-B<lb />order"). Such orders are obtained<lb />by filling out a complaint with the<lb />Clerk of Court's office. A judge, or<lb />in some cases, a magistrate, must<lb />then issue the order. While it is<lb />better to be represented by an<lb />attorney when secking a 50-B<lb />order, the law provides a mecha-<lb />nism for victims to obtain them for<lb />their own. Similarly, if a victim<lb /><lb />Discrimination Against Women in the Work Force<lb /><lb />just as well as he, often receives<lb />less pay. The cost of living is the<lb />same for women as it is for men;<lb />therefore, the wages should be the<lb />same. Women refuse to live in a<lb />male dominated world. Whether<lb />women are waitresses, housekeep-<lb />ers, or doctors, women shouldn't<lb />have to receive less pay because of<lb />our gender. Come on women, let's<lb />take a stand. The problem won't<lb />disappear until women fight back.<lb />In "Fighting Back",. Stanley L.<lb />Wormly Jr. says, "sometimes it<lb />seems that fighting back is the only<lb />way to command respect in this<lb />world." (383)<lb /><lb />pledge to work effectively on those<lb />issues affecting our families and<lb />communities; education; healthcare;<lb />environment; social security reform<lb />annd economic development. May God<lb />continue to bless you.<lb /><lb />Paid for by Clayton for Congress<lb /><lb />On the other hand, a woman's<lb />appearance sometimes stands in the<lb />way of her getting a job. For<lb />instance, a flight attendant has to<lb />be an attractive, slender-built per-<lb />son. It shouldn't matter if a person<lb />weighs 150 pounds or 350 pounds,<lb />qualifications should be the main<lb />focus. People tend to judge the book<lb />by its cover. It has been said that a<lb />person can dress inappropriately<lb />when appearing for a job interview.<lb />They may show up for an interview<lb />at the largest law firm in town, and,<lb />because the person didn't wear<lb />appropriate clothing, they were<lb />turned down for the position. Scott<lb />Russell Sanders says in "The Men<lb />We Carry In Our Minds",<lb />Women...vearned for a say over<lb />their future, for jobs worthy of their<lb />abilities, for the right to live at<lb />peace. unmolested, whole." (381).<lb />Employers must accept women for<lb />their abilities, not for their beauty.<lb /><lb />In addition to other factors, age<lb />plays a part in discrimination<lb />against women in the work force.<lb />After a certain age it becomes more<lb />difficult to find jobs; consequently<lb />employers tend to limit the salary<lb />of elderly employees. They also<lb />consider the fact that advancing<lb />age renders them less time to<lb /><lb />remain in the work force. For<lb />instance, a sixty-five year old<lb />school teacher who was in the best<lb />of health, applied for a job as a<lb />college professor. She was turned<lb />down because the college instructor<lb />felt that she was too old for the job.<lb /><lb />Faces and Places...<lb /><lb />Employers need to concentrate on<lb />women's competencies rather than<lb />their ages.<lb /><lb />Because of the changes in<lb />American society, women should<lb /><lb />COMMENTS & OPINIONS<lb />continues on Page....<lb /><lb />Womens Conference - 1998<lb /><lb />5th throu<lb /><lb />These smiling faces were among the many women who attended The Anointed<lb />One's Church Annual Womens Conference which took place from November<lb />the 8th and hosted a number of well known women ministers who<lb />spoke and lectured at the event. As with domestic violence<lb />orders, an attorney is not needed to<lb />apply for benefits. The commission<lb />will verify an applicant's eligibility<lb />for benefits. Once.a person is found<lb />eligible, he or she will receive a<lb />portion of their previous pay (usu-<lb />ally around half) while they look<lb />for new employment. Applicants<lb />who are denied benefits have a<lb />right to appeal that decision. The<lb />local Legal Services office may be<lb />able to assist individuals who run<lb />into problems in obtaining benefits.<lb /><lb />As the new law regarding bene-<lb />fits for victims of domestic violence<lb />was just passed into law on October<lb />28, it will take some time for<lb />government officials to get used to<lb />it. They will not be known<lb /><lb />The roles of men and women are<lb /><lb />| changing in family life. What was<lb /><lb />viewed as normal or traditional 40<lb />or 50 years ago is often not<lb />accepted today. An example of<lb />family life then was the man as<lb />breadwinner for his family and his<lb />wife as homemaker. But today's<lb />technological era has forced both<lb />husband and wife to work outside<lb />the home, to such an extent where<lb />one or both may have two jobs.<lb />Some 1900 years ago, the Apostle<lb />Paul wrote to the Corinthians<lb />saying, "the scene of the world is<lb />changing." (I Corinthians 7:31)<lb />and how true those words are today.<lb />The world is changing, and the<lb />roles of men and women are also<lb />changing. Unfortunately, many<lb />people continue to view men and<lb />women in terms of traditional, yet<lb />unrealistic stereotypes.<lb /><lb />Men have traditionally been<lb />viewed as the breadwinners or the<lb />sole income earners in the family.<lb />Their roles also include coming<lb /><lb />home after work, reading the paper, _/<lb /><lb />watching the 6 o'clock news and<lb />drinking beer. In the American<lb />Culture a man is not considered a<lb />real man unless he is married. Even<lb />Sanders stated in his essay, "The<lb />Men We Carry In Our Minds", that,<lb />as a boy, he knew only about the<lb /><lb />HIDDEN TALENTS<lb /><lb />The Hidden Talents Fall<lb />Craft Fair will be held on Nov.<lb />21st from 9am until Spm and<lb />on Nov. 22 from noon until 5<lb />pm. But the 90's on<lb />is displaying concern about his<lb />children's lives by having an active<lb />voice in their upbringing and their<lb />career choices.<lb /><lb />Also the 90's man will delegate<lb />himself to the chores of the home.<lb />Many husbands are beginning to<lb />display affection openly to their<lb />wives and children. These are the<lb />positive and encouraging facets of<lb />the changing roles of men.<lb />Likewise, mothers have tradition-<lb />ally been the mainstays of home<lb />life. Until the 70's, the aprical<lb />woman got married and had chil-<lb />dren. She did not have to dress up:<lb />she was not visible. But as women<lb />began to work outside the home,<lb />they had to compete for acceptance,<lb />responsibilities and = promo-<lb />tions- - and- - appearance counts.<lb />Instead of working for economic<lb />factors only, she must now spend a<lb />part of her income on cosmetics<lb />and a fashionable wardrobe. This<lb />struggling under the load of two<lb />major jobs - one at home and one<lb />at work, she found to be both<lb />stressful and burdensome. In the<lb />meantime, her children are being<lb />given all the modern gadgetry but<lb />not the love and attention needed<lb />from their mothers. While the<lb />mother may not be dependent on<lb />her husband's income, her children<lb />are dependent on her for stability,<lb />guidance, and options for problem<lb />solving. Consequently, the mother's<lb />role has been reversed negatively,<lb />and she must now reevaluate her<lb />priorities.<lb /><lb />There are times when we are not<lb />inclined to think in terms of the<lb />nontraditional single parent homes.<lb />But they do exist and we must<lb />acknowledge their existence as a<lb /><lb />w about the<lb />abandoned wives, single mothers, ©<lb />and widows.(339) These children of<lb />single parent homes may experi-<lb />ence hardships and persecution<lb />about their clothing, their homes,<lb />or the family car. Unfortunately,<lb />these res must bear the sole<lb />r sibilities for ev of<lb />their family's life; this a sludes<lb />financial, emotional and physical<lb />needs and this can be taxing.<lb /><lb />Change is inevitable, and the<lb />roles of men and women have<lb />changed because the pressure of<lb />this system has forced the family to<lb />work harder and longer hours to<lb />rovide the necessities and wants in<lb />ife. Meanwhile our children are<lb />being neglected and abused by<lb />family members. Yes, families want<lb />to be the traditional type, even<lb />stereotyped, if it means being<lb />accepted by their peers. They do<lb />this by pretending that everything<lb />is normal and by hiding behind the<lb />power to purchase. The reality is<lb />that mankind's role as loving and<lb />nurturing creatures has been dimin-<lb />ished and replaced with the love of<lb />money and material possessions. So<lb />we need to be vigilant to the issues<lb />that are most important to our<lb />families, realizing that relation-<lb />ships are. tangible and must be<lb />maintained. Therefore, all must put<lb />in a concerted effort. Changes are<lb />going to occur but the question is<lb />ow are we going to deal with these<lb />changes?<lb /><lb />Southeastern Center For Contemporary<lb />Art Awarded National Grant<lb /><lb />WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The<lb />Southeastern Center for Contem-<lb />orary Art was recently awarded a<lb />8 112,500 grant from the Institute<lb />of Museum and Library Services to<lb />support general operating expenses.<lb />The museum was one of only 186<lb />museums selected from the 942<lb />applications received for the grant.<lb />Acting Director, Vicki Kopf,<lb />commented "this is a very prestig-<lb />ious grant for us to receive and we<lb />are very proud to have once again<lb />been awarded an IMLS grant."<lb />Museums that qualify for a<lb />General Operating Support grant<lb />demonstrate outstanding perform-<lb />ance in all areas of museums<lb />operations. <lb />During an asthma attack, the muscles<lb /><lb />that wrap around the airways leading<lb />to the lungs tighten. At the same time,<lb />the linings of these airways become<lb />swollen and congested, blocking them<lb />even more. Breathing becomes very diffi-<lb />cult. Asthma is the number one chronic<lb />childhood disease and there is no cure.<lb /><lb />The symptoms leading to an asthma<lb />attack, however, can be controlled.<lb />And the Pediatric Asthma Program at<lb />University Health Systems of Eastern<lb />Carolina helps asthmatic kids and their<lb />families do just that.
