Jones<lb /><lb />I was reared in the Presbyterian<lb />Church, and later played the organ<lb />for the Episcopal Church in<lb />Kinston. Some time afterward, |<lb />received the laying on of hands and<lb />confirmation as an Episcopalian. It<lb />had never entered into my mind<lb />that I would ever become<lb />Pentecostal- oriented. But some<lb />unforeseen and unguided force<lb />drew me to visit a newly- built<lb />church at the corner of 14th Street<lb />and Dickinson Avenue T in<lb /><lb />_ Greenville (not far from my home).<lb />- When I entered the sanctuary, I was<lb />amazed at its magnificent beauty.<lb /><lb />Soon after I had seated myself<lb /><lb />. (always at the end of the pew, if<lb />. possible) I felt this sudden move-<lb /><lb />' that it carried wit<lb /><lb />by and noticed<lb />it an erect man<lb />with a distinct gait- - somewhere<lb />between a dash and a bouncing<lb />trot. It would appear that he was<lb />rushing to catch a plane before<lb />take- off- - this man with a coun-<lb />tenance of complete confidence in<lb /><lb />ment of air sweep<lb /><lb />the Spirit. "There is no order of<lb />service", he boasts, and admonishes<lb />every one that Tabernacle Church<lb />services can at anytime be altered<lb />by the move of God. "That is a<lb />characteristic of Pentecost and the<lb />Charismatic movement", he quotes,<lb />as he moves about the Church<lb />healing and delivering, speaking in -<lb />tongues and flagging his 18 X 18<lb />anointed handkerchief over his<lb />congregation.<lb /><lb />Pastor Hawkins at times can be<lb />flamboyant and dapper with his<lb />precarious style of dress and hu-<lb />mor. It is not unusual for him to<lb />grace the pulpit with his doctoral<lb />robe and at another time don<lb />himself in a more casual attire. STEWART<lb /><lb />WARREN B. CADE<lb /><lb />and she absolutely beamed.<lb /><lb />Later, watching the movie in the<lb />crowded Siegfeld Theater, I quickly<lb />realized that the occasion was less<lb />about Ms. Winfrey than it was<lb />about the psychological effects of<lb />slavery. The individual actors were<lb />fantastic as they portrayed with<lb />extreme intensity and conviction<lb />the disturbing saga of one woman's<lb />experience with the buying and<lb />selling of other human beings. But,<lb />the story soon became even more<lb />than that.<lb /><lb />As I watched the mysterious and<lb />fascinating scenes unfold before my<lb />eyes, 1 understood that the story<lb />was greater than the sum of its<lb />parts. Every scene and every detail,<lb />no matter how minor, was essential<lb />to the plot. This awareness left me<lb />with a far better appreciation for it<lb />than I anticipated going in, and I<lb />left the theater profoundly moved.<lb /><lb />The experience reminded me of<lb /><lb />another recent epic, "Saving<lb />Private Ryan."<lb />Like "Beloved" does now,<lb /><lb />"Private Ryan" forced us to con-<lb />front the demons of our collective<lb />history. Steven Spielberg's graphic<lb />and unflinching look at World War<lb />II through the eyes of a particular<lb /><lb />purpose by not avoi<lb />subjects we are uncomf with.<lb />We need such reminders now<lb /><lb />and then to keep us grounded in<lb />reality and a the most i t<lb />events of our history from °<lb />ing footnotes in our memory.<lb /><lb />The same can be said of<lb />"Beloved.". Based on Toni<lb /><lb />Morrison's dense and often confus-..<lb /><lb />ing book, which was first published<lb />roughly a decade ago, the movie<lb />laid bare the ruin that slavery<lb />wrought on the lives of all those<lb />involved in the practice.<lb /><lb />When Sethe, played by Ms.<lb />Winfrey, kills her daughter in order<lb />to save her from a life of slavery, we<lb />experience the tragic actions of a<lb />mother who, because of her posi-<lb />tion, can only feel a sense of control<lb />or power by taking the life of an<lb />innocent. We experience her des-<lb />peration and despair. Upon seeing<lb />what she has done, her master<lb />weeps, and by doing so, we are<lb />made to feel not just his pain, but<lb />the pain and sorrow that the<lb />industry which he relies on has<lb />caused everyone.<lb /><lb />It takes intense concentration to<lb />follow the myriad details of the<lb />movie. I admit that it lost me at<lb />times because I allowed myself to<lb />be distracted. But, this is the type of<lb />movie that has so much genius and<lb />so much brilliance that it can<lb /><lb />fierce, compelling film, and as I:<lb />mentioned, the acting is . As<lb />a matter of fact, [ wou 't be<lb />surprised if the picture and Oprah<lb /><lb />we cannot afford to miss. Don't go<lb />see this movie just because Ms.<lb />Winfrey is in it. If her role is what<lb />draws you to the theater, than so<lb />much the better. But don't be<lb />distracted by her presence because<lb />in the end, her involvement is<lb />incidental.<lb /><lb />Yes, "Beloved" is bigger and<lb />more- powerful than the most pow-<lb />erful woman in show business. It<lb />may be the story of one individual,<lb />but it is also "our story." It is about<lb />us, our history, our | as a<lb />country. That is what makes this<lb />movie a must- see.<lb /><lb />Armstrong Williams is a<lb />Columnist and talk-show host.<lb /><lb />Arts and Crafts Show to be Held in Tarboro<lb /><lb />The Arts Council announces the<lb />1998 Great Tarboro Art Bazaar, a<lb /><lb />Ts ee<lb />1798 N.
