Wells<lb /><lb />anklin<lb /><lb />Home Delivery<lb /><lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA TS MINORITY VOICE SINCE 1981<lb /><lb /> o]SSUE WEEK AUGUST 25-SEPTEMBER 7, 1998<lb /><lb />- THE MILLION YOUTH MARCH TO HARLEM IS ON...<lb /><lb />By Damaso Reyes, Special to the M-Voice Newspaper<lb /><lb />NEW YORK .- After over eight<lb />hours of dramatic court room<lb />battles, the leaders of the Million<lb />Youth March prevailed in the<lb />Federal District Court as Judge<lb />Louis Kaplan granted an injunction<lb />against the city of New York.<lb /><lb />The court battle was been the<lb />latest step in a lengthy fight by the<lb />organizers of the Million Youth<lb />March against New York City<lb />officials and the Police<lb />Department. The focus of the<lb />federal court case was the constitu-<lb />tionality of city officials denying<lb />march organizers a permit to<lb />congregate along Malcolm X<lb />Boulevard from 118th Street to<lb />147th Street in Harlem.<lb /><lb />The events taking place during<lb />that day of testimony were long and<lb />drawn out as both the plaintiff and<lb />the defendant presented their cases.<lb />Arguing on behalf of the New York<lb />City Corporation Council, lead<lb />attorney Michael Hess brought<lb />several city officials involved in the<lb />negotiations to the stand, including<lb />former NYPD Chief of Patrol<lb />Wilbur Chapman. The witnesses<lb />testified to the fact that they believed<lb /><lb />that the particular stretch of Malcolm<lb />X Boulevard was not a suitable site<lb />for the Million Youth March.<lb /><lb />"It creates a potential for con-<lb />frontation," said Wilbur Chapman,<lb />on the feasibility of closing off the<lb />rally site if the march exceeded<lb />capacity.<lb /><lb />From early that morning to late<lb />that afternoon, the history of the<lb />march, which dates from<lb />November 1997 when the original<lb />permit application was submitted,<lb />was rehashed and argued back and<lb />forth. The defendant, the city of<lb />New York, claimed that million<lb />Youth March organizers were im-<lb />precise as to where and when they<lb />wanted the march to be held. They<lb />also stated organizers had claimed<lb /><lb />that upwards to one million people.<lb /><lb />would show up to the event, even<lb />during later negotiations.<lb /><lb />- Seemingly unconvinced by the<lb />defendant's claims, the judge asked<lb />several questions as to the legiti-<lb />macy and constitutionality of the<lb />city's case, leading those in the<lb />courtroom to believe that he would<lb />rule in the plaintiffs favor.<lb /><lb />The air of the courtroom was<lb /><lb />chilly as spectators filed back into<lb />the courtroom for the judge's<lb />decision. Ironically, members of the<lb />press were seated in the jury box as<lb />the judge came in and systemati-<lb />cally proceeded to dismantle the<lb />city's case for denying the permit.<lb />Kaplan ruled on several aspects of<lb />the constitutionality of the city's<lb />decision. First, he ruled that the<lb />way in which the city grant street<lb />activity permits is far too broad and<lb />ants too much power to a few city<lb />eaucrats. Second, He said that<lb />the city has not met its burden of an<lb />overriding concerning interest in<lb />denying the organizers their per-<lb />mit. he noted that organizers were<lb />willing to and had already made<lb />provisions for an emergency vehi-<lb />cle lane along the length of<lb />Malcolm X Boulevard and that<lb />organizers seemed willing to work<lb />things out with the city. Perhaps<lb />most importantly, the judge ruled<lb />that the specific site of Malcolm X<lb />Boulevard in Harlem was relevant<lb />to the organizers T ability to convey<lb />their message.<lb />"Clearly, Harlem is the most<lb />appropriate venue," said Judge<lb /><lb />Kaplan in his verbal ruling from<lb />the bench. "Harlem is an interna-<lb />tional Mecca for the Black commu-<lb />nity," he added. Once the ruling<lb />was made, the audience burst in<lb />applause and began cheering, "The<lb />Million Youth March is on!"<lb /><lb />Outside of Federal District Court<lb />in Manhattan, the march's organiz-<lb />ers and lawyers were ecstatic.<lb /><lb />"This is a smashing win for the<lb />First Amendment," said Norman<lb />Siegal of the New York Civil<lb />Liberties Union.<lb /><lb />"We want to tell the world that<lb />the march is on!" said national<lb />organizer for the Million Youth<lb />March Malik Zulu Shabazz.<lb />Lawyers for the city said that they will<lb />seek an appeal to the judge's injunction.<lb /><lb />It is now clear that the Million<lb />Youth March finally has gained the<lb />legitimacy that its organizers have<lb />sought from the beginning.<lb />Regardless of what in the appeals<lb />process, it seem as though the<lb />march will take place on Malcolm<lb />X Boulevard in Harlem on<lb />September Sth. As the judge said in<lb />his ruling, it is now incumbent<lb />upon both side to come to the<lb /><lb />We Wo n 9 @6 ° 3 \<lb /><lb />that victory was theirs.<lb /><lb />| Erica Ford and Malik Zulu<lb />Shabazz knew even last week<lb /><lb />(Bil! Pope<lb /><lb />Community Questions<lb />Impeachment Call...<lb /><lb />African American Leaders Suspect Political Motives...<lb /><lb />William Jefferson Clinton<lb />GREENVILLE - Many African-<lb />American leaders and community<lb />citizens, mostly Democrats believe<lb />that President Bill Clinton should<lb />not face impeachment because of<lb />his alleged affair with former<lb />White House intern, Monica<lb />Lewinsky. The Black Community<lb />seems sympathetic toward the<lb />president after his recent public<lb />apology and admission that he had<lb />an inappropriate relationship with<lb />Lewinsky.<lb /><lb />Many leaders believed that the<lb />entire controversy has been blown<lb />out of proportion in an effort to<lb />discredit Clinton Ts overall job as<lb />President. Most people felt that it is<lb />time to move on because of more<lb />serious business, domestic, and<lb />foreign matters facing the country.<lb /><lb />Bishop Ralph Love, Pitt County<lb />school board member and minister<lb />at Holy Trinity United Church says<lb />that Clinton should not be im-<lb />peached because he has not done<lb />any more than many other US<lb />Presidents. oI feel that his personal<lb />life should not be the focus of the<lb />whole country. This is probably the<lb />way the Republicans are trying to<lb />gain control of the White House<lb /><lb />for year 2000, says Bishop Love.<lb /><lb />Barbara Fenner, director of the<lb />West Creenyille Community<lb />Development Center agrees that<lb />Clinton is the victim of an effort by<lb />the Republican Party to gain con-<lb />trol of the White House for the next<lb />election. oWhy should we try to<lb />impeach him for aspects of his<lb />personal life when his term is<lb />already almost out. It would be a<lb />waste of tax payers money, she<lb />explains.<lb /><lb />Fanning Morning of Bethel says<lb />that the president Ts personal life is<lb />no one Ts business. oI feel that<lb />many people don Tt like Clinton<lb />because he has tried to help blacks<lb />and poor people, says Morning.<lb />He Ts doing a good job of running<lb />the country and he need to be left<lb />alone to continue doing his job, <lb />explains Morning.<lb /><lb />Rocky Mount District attorney<lb />candidate Charles Robinson says<lb />that moralistically the President<lb />has a responsibility to his wife and<lb />family and shouldn Tt have lied to<lb />the public. He does believe, how-<lb />ever, that his personal life has<lb />nothing to do with the political<lb />agenda.<lb /><lb />Pitt County Commissioner Jeff<lb />Savage also believes that President<lb />Clinton should not be impeached<lb />because the price that he has to pay<lb />for his transgressions is much<lb />greater than any punishment that<lb />could be rendered in a secular<lb />setting if he is indeed guilty of<lb />committing sin. oI believe that a<lb />right- wing conspiracy as eluded to<lb />by Ms. Clinton during a television<lb />interview is quite plausible - given<lb />his unprecedented bridge building<lb />between White House and groups<lb />that are often left out of the<lb />process, says Savage.<lb /><lb />Many African American citizens<lb />interviewed expressed appreciation<lb />of what President Clinton has done<lb />during his administration and that<lb />the president Ts televised apology<lb />was sufficient.<lb /><lb />Pictured (I-r) Bennie Rountree, Pitt County and North Carolina SCLC<lb />President is shown here with Commissioner Jeff Savage at a recent fo-<lb /><lb />rum,<lb /><lb />Jeff Savage, Pitt County Commissioner since 1992 has been named 2<lb />Vice President of the North Carolina Association of Black County officials<lb />which is an affiliate of the NC Association of County Commissioners. "That was the only question |<lb />asked." yo<lb /><lb />The "her" referred to is Sherrice<lb />Iverson, a seven-year old, girl who<lb />was raped and murdered in a<lb />bathroom stall at the Primadonna<lb />Casino near Las Vegas, Nev. on<lb />May 25, 1997. The insensitive,<lb />callous words about the victim were<lb />not spoken by Jeremy Strohmeyer,<lb />the white teen scheduled by Jeremy<lb /><lb />. Strohmeyer, the white teen sched-<lb /><lb />uled to go on trial in Las Vegas on<lb />Aug. 17 for the murder. They were<lb />spoken by his friend who was<lb />present and witnessed at least part<lb />of the assault. He<lb /><lb />was not charged<lb />in the case.<lb /><lb />When " Stroh-<lb />meyer was trans-<lb />ported back to<lb />Ne-vada<lb />Cali-fornia _ " to<lb />stand trial, depu-<lb />ties said that he<lb />was joking, in a<lb />jovial mood, and<lb />appeared to take<lb />the matter lightly.<lb />Prosecutors also<lb /><lb />claimed he used<lb />racial epithets in<lb />describing _ the<lb />murder to them. B<lb /><lb />The seeming<lb />indifference<lb /><lb />to the brutal murder of a young<lb />Black girl reminded many Blacks<lb />of the horrific courtroom photos of<lb />whites charged with the murder of<lb />Blacks in the South laughing and<lb />mugging for the cameras, confident<lb />that they would be acquitted by<lb />all-white juries. It was also a stark<lb />reminder that many Americans still<lb />view Black life as insignificant.<lb />The Iverson murder, though hei-<lb />nous and shocking, got a fraction of<lb />the hypercharged media frenzy of<lb />Jon Benet Ramsey, Louise Wood-<lb />ward (au pair), and the Melissa<lb />Drexler, who abandoned her baby<lb />at a teen prom, cases. There<lb />were no sympathetic, human inter-<lb />est stories on Iverson's parents and<lb />their pain, and suffering as victims.<lb /><lb />There was no indication whether<lb />Phot<lb /><lb />ide World Photos gutho-rities<lb /><lb />[a have "main-<lb />tained close<lb />contact with<lb />Iverson's _par-<lb />ents, advising<lb />them of on-<lb />going develop-<lb />ments in the<lb />case. The aim<lb />is to create as much empathy and<lb />sympathy among the jurors (and the<lb />public) as possible to win an<lb />acquittal or a reduced sentence.<lb />The murder of Sherrice Iverson is a<lb />near textbook example of indiffer-<lb />ence, insensitivity, and disdain<lb />toward Black victims , no matter<lb />how young and innocent. <lb />a -*M? VOICE - AUGUST 25-SEPTEMBER 7, 1998<lb /><lb />ity saa aang<lb /><lb />The .endless line of people<lb />waiting to see the movie, oHow<lb />Stella Got. Her Groove Back, <lb />enticed me to see for myself what<lb />_ the ogroove was all about. From a<lb />medical point of view, this is what<lb />J thought of the movie.<lb /><lb />Just think, 40 year old Stella,<lb />a@ $275,000-a-year worker, could<lb />have married a judge who would<lb />more likely been a great husband,<lb />lover and father to her very<lb />intelligent , no-nonsense son<lb />Quincy. But no, she had to head off<lb />to the beautiful island of Jamaica<lb />for a stress-reduction rest and fall<lb />in love with a dude who, more than<lb />likely, was in his last years of<lb />college.<lb /><lb />; This sets the scene for an<lb />enjoyable but stereotypical unrealis-<lb />tic love story which I might<lb />understand may have been true.<lb />Medically speaking, the story sent<lb />dangerous messages to young peo-<lb />le. Nowadays, the mistake could<lb />very deadly. After a day or two<lb />in Jamaica, Stella was already<lb />sleeping with this 20 year old<lb />youngster, and she knew nothing of<lb />his sexual history, his sexually<lb />transmitted disease (STD) status. |<lb />am sure, however, being as edu-<lb />cated as she is, she must have<lb />known that HIV is the major killer<lb />of women between the ages of 20<lb />and 35 years. She must have<lb /> naively thought that her age of 40<lb /> protected her from this infectious<lb /> disease.<lb />The first evening after meet-<lb /> ing Winston Shakespeare, she at-<lb />tends a jump party where everybody<lb />begins to disrobe. [ am not certain<lb />but it seemed like only black<lb />females were showing off their bare<lb />breast while the white young ladies<lb />remained covered up. What mes-<lb />sage is that sending ?<lb /><lb />I guess the director wanted to<lb />show how uninhibited Black<lb />women are as a group. At the<lb />dance, Stella and her close friend<lb />also discussed the origin of the<lb />AIDS virus an whether is was<lb />discovered first in Haiti or Jamaica.<lb />Again, another stereotypical lie.<lb />The four letter word that rhymes<lb />with oluck was used like everyday<lb />language among Black women. As<lb />the movie developed, Winston was<lb />encouraged to relocate to America,<lb />and immediately he began acting<lb />like a child, sleeping with Stella in<lb />her home with her son noticing.<lb /><lb />Again, Black mothers don Tt<lb />usually sleep around with a new<lb />lover in front of their children.<lb /><lb />Winston explains that he<lb />wants to become a doctor and<lb />introduced Stella to his parent, who<lb /><lb />by the way are arrogant. They .<lb /><lb />reside in plush surroundings away<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />By Geral W. Deas, M.D.<lb /><lb />from the ocommon folk. This<lb />certainly demonstrates the divi-<lb />sions between the have or have<lb />nots. Oh, don Tt let me forget<lb />Stella Ts sister. She is depicted as<lb />being in the groove since she was<lb />born. Why do movies always to<lb />show dysfunctional Black relatives?<lb /><lb />Finally, Winston decides he is<lb />moving back to Jamaica to attend<lb />medical school, but at the airport<lb />Stella convinces him that he could<lb />attend Stanford University. She<lb />obviously forgot that affirmative<lb />action is is over in California.<lb />Believe me, Winston should have at<lb />least gone back to fine medical<lb />school in Jamaica where he would<lb />have been accepted. And one other<lb />thing -- Stella didn't realize that<lb />she would be 48 years old (and he<lb />28) by the time he finished. Believe<lb />me, I know that medical school is<lb />no joke, and often, love is sacri-<lb />ficed for the books. Furthermore,<lb />eight years of medical school and<lb />training leads to high divorce rate,<lb />alcoholism and drug addiction. So<lb />the relationship was doomed from<lb />the start.<lb /><lb />A last word of advice to<lb />Stella: You really needed another<lb />type of fella, and you certainly<lb />would have been a whole lot wella.<lb /><lb />Smith dropped out of Morehouse<lb /><lb />after three years and went to work<lb />for the Student Nonviolent<lb />Coordinating Committee in 1962.<lb />BROOKLYN'S. <lb />Many of us strive for a sense of<lb />balance in our lives. We want to<lb />keep our goals in harmony with our<lb />minds and souls. For le with<lb />diabetes, "balance" carries a spécial<lb />meaning.<lb /><lb />We would like to share a story<lb />about the eagle, a symbol of power<lb />and balance, and how it faces<lb />challenges to get where it wants to<lb />be. The story was told to us by Dr.<lb />Gerald Durley of Morehouse<lb />School of Medicine in Atlanta,<lb /><lb />Georgia.<lb /><lb />An eagle is a focused bird. When<lb />it decides to do something, it lets<lb />nothing get in its way - not even<lb />severe weather. Seeing a storm<lb />brewing, an eagle flies closer, then<lb />turns around and flies in the other<lb />direction. About 200 miles away,<lb />the eagle turns back to face the<lb />storm. Flying at 75, 85,95, and<lb />then up to 110 miles an hour, the<lb />eagle hits the storm with all its<lb />strength. Then something won-<lb />drous happens: the updraft lifts the<lb />eagle above the storm. Keeping its<lb />balance, rising above its obstacle,<lb />the great bird flies off.<lb /><lb />We all see storms in our lives that<lb />seem to get in the way of our plans.<lb />Like the eagle, we must face the<lb />challenges, keep our balance, and<lb />soar off to where and who we want<lb />to be.<lb /><lb />What is Diabetes?<lb /><lb />Most of the food we eat is turned<lb />into glucose (sugar) for our bodies<lb />to use for energy. The pancreas, an<lb />organ near the stomach, makes a<lb />hormone called insulin to help<lb />glucose get into our body cells.<lb />When you have diabetes, your body<lb />either doesn't make enough insulin<lb />very well. This problem causes<lb />glucose to build up in your body.<lb />Types of diabetes.<lb /><lb />There are two main types of<lb />diabetes: Type | and Type 2.<lb />Another type of diabetes appears<lb />during pregnancy in some women.<lb />It's called gestational diabetes.<lb /><lb />One out of ten people with<lb />diabetes has Type | diabetes.<lb />These people usually find out they<lb />have when they are children or<lb />young adults. People with Type !<lb />diabetes must inject insulin every<lb />day to live. The pancreas of a<lb />person with Type | makes little or<lb />no insulin. Scientists are learning<lb />more about what causes the body to<lb />attack its own beta cells of the<lb />pancreas (an auto-immune process)<lb />to stop making insulin in people<lb />with certain sets of genes<lb /><lb />Most people with diabetes - nine<lb />out of ten - have Type 2 diabetes.<lb />The pancreas of people with Type 2<lb />diabetes keeps making insulin for<lb />some time but the body can't use it<lb />very well. Most people with Type 2<lb />find out about their diabetes after<lb />age 30 or 40.<lb /><lb />Certain risk factors make people<lb />more likely to get Type 2 diabetes.<lb />4ome of these are:<lb /><lb />Ses<lb />Arthritis<lb />Affects Quality<lb />Of Life<lb />* 427 Million days<lb /><lb />of restricted<lb />activity<lb />* 156 million days<lb />in bed<lb />* 45 million days<lb />lost from work<lb />| ~<lb />TO "A&<lb />; @6<lb />Source: Arthritis Foundation (at iM Be<lb />yo . , Y<lb /><lb />The Minority<lb />Voice Inc.<lb /><lb />310 Evans St. Mall,<lb />ROME sie) asiich<lb />ireenville, NC 27835<lb />0365/Fax: 919-757-1793<lb /><lb />Joy 1340 AM<lb />Ol) Est lellemeiciilela<lb />nville, NC 27834<lb />loy 1320 AM<lb /><lb />TOW Radio Station<lb /><lb />aliae tela mn) (Ome ardsisi°<lb />str ego aN eR<lb />eived by The 'M<lb />ySpaper become the<lb />OT Th MV<lb /><lb />nag we are<lb /><lb />Voice<lb />ale) |<lb />St pictures<lb />Me cmiirciiiciemis<lb /><lb />if<lb />i]<lb /><lb />by<lb />YOU TaVe<lb /><lb />_ * A family history of diabetes...<lb /><lb />* Lack of exercise...<lb /><lb />* Weighing too much..<lb /><lb />* Being African American,<lb />Native Indian, Hipanic/Latino<lb />or Asian/ Pacific Island<lb />Heritage...<lb /><lb />If you weigh more than the<lb />weight that matches your height on<lb />the chart , tell your health provide.<lb />you can help mange your diabetes<lb />by controlling your weight, making<lb />healthy food choice, and getting<lb />regular physical activity. Some<lb />people with Type 2 diabetes may<lb />also need to take pills or insulin<lb />shots to help control their diabetes<lb /><lb />CONTROLLING YOUR<lb />DIABETES<lb /><lb />There's good news for people<lb />with diabetes. A new study shows<lb />that keeping your blood glucose<lb />(also called blood sugar) close to<lb />normal helps prevent or delay some<lb />diabetes problems.<lb /><lb />Scientists in this study learned<lb />that through such control, at least<lb />half of the expected eye disease,<lb />kidney disease, and nerve damage<lb />was prevented or slowed. People<lb />who were in the study had Type |<lb /><lb />S<lb /><lb />Guy Smith Stadium<lb /><lb />diabetes, but many doctors believe<lb />that people who have Type 2<lb />diabetes also can benefit by keeping<lb />theit blood glucose closer to nor-<lb />mal.<lb /><lb />You can get more information<lb />about this study by contacting the<lb />National Diabetes Information<lb />Clearinghouse at 1-800-GET-<lb />LEVEL (1-800-438-5383).<lb /><lb />Any $7.00 OFF!!<lb /><lb />Hair Style With this Coupon<lb /><lb />This Coupon Cannot Be Combined with Any Other Offer<lb /><lb />@e @ 1<lb />Mark Ts Hair Kingdom<lb /> oMakes you feel like you are in Paradise <lb />318 Evans Street Mall, Greenville, NC Tel. 329-0629<lb />Walk-ins Welcome ECU Students 10% OFF<lb /><lb />MARK SMITH<lb /><lb />Hair Technician<lb /><lb />id 2<lb /><lb />R'S BAIL BONDING Co.<lb />"IN JAIL - WE BAIL" Pancaroner<lb /><lb />PAM GARDNER<lb />QUENCY GARDNER] |<lb />Espesiallzamons en flanzas de cancel para su servicio<lb />@ LOCAL SERVICE WITHIN 10 MINUTES OR LESS<lb />@ FINANCING AVAILABLE ON BONDS 10,000 & UP<lb /><lb />CALL 785-8900<lb />ENTER # = <lb /><lb />FAMILY REUNION~<lb />ABOR DAY GOSPEL SHOW<lb /><lb />onsored by: WOOW & THE M.
