Pope<lb /><lb />The National Urban League's<lb />Annual Conference was held at the<lb />Pennsylvania Convention Center in<lb />Philadelphia several weeks ago.<lb />The four-day conference featured<lb />such speakers as Rev. Jesse<lb />Jackson. US Vice-president. Al<lb />Gore. NAACP board chairman,<lb />Julian Bond: Chairman and CEO<lb />of Scars. Roebuck and Co.. Arthur<lb />Martinez: pioneer astronaut. Dr.<lb />Mae Jamison. Chairman/CEO of<lb />Texaco. INC.. Peter I. Bijur: and<lb />several other distinguished leaders.<lb />Entertainment was provided by<lb />Harold Melvin &amp; Blue Notes.<lb />Roberta Flack and the Whispers.<lb /><lb />National Urban " League<lb />President Hugh Price and Peter<lb />Biyur of Texaco addressed the<lb />conference that Tuesday and Julian<lb />Bond and Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke<lb />on Wednesday. Each speaker's<lb />theme focused on the inclusion of<lb />African Americans in America's<lb />business structure. Each empha-<lb />sized the Urban League's Mission<lb />to enforce and create fair employ-<lb />ment and economic possibilities.<lb /><lb />Because Texaco exploded into<lb />national attention when company<lb />executives were taped discussing<lb />blacks in derogative terms. the<lb />representative from Texaco had<lb />been anticipated intensely by the<lb />audience. Surveys of the company<lb />had also revealed difficulty for<lb />blacks attempting to buy Texaco<lb /><lb />franchises. Because of these embar-<lb />rassing revelations, Texaco has<lb />increased availability for minority<lb />business opportunities.<lb /><lb />Bijur, in his speech entitled<lb />"What is the corporate<lb />Commitment to Real Diversity,"<lb />said that Texaco is now an cxample<lb />that real diversity must be inte-<lb />grated into a company's busincss<lb />plan. oIt must guide our strategies<lb />or hiring. developing. promoting<lb />and retaining a diverse workforce.<lb />And it must extend beyond our<lb />corporate boundaries - not only to<lb />our customers and suppliers, but<lb />also to the communities where we<lb />work and live," said Biyur.<lb /><lb />Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke on<lb />establishing effective means of<lb />realizing economic power. With<lb />his usual fiery tone. he talked about<lb />"leveling the plaving field" for<lb />economic power. Jackson said that<lb />resources within the African-<lb />American community must be<lb />identified and developed.<lb /><lb />As head of ration Push,<lb />Jackson has established a new unit<lb />within the organization called "The<lb />Wall Street Project and Rainbow<lb />Push Coalition" which will begin<lb />buying blocks of stock in compa-<lb />nies that were found to be reluctant<lb />in fairly spending with minorities.<lb />The idea is to buy influence in the<lb />companies to force a change in<lb />direction.<lb /><lb />Julian Bond talked about min-<lb />ing the ready talent and resources<lb />within the black community for<lb />long-lasting economic strength.<lb />Bond outlined strategies to broaden<lb />the perspectives of the professional<lb />organizations T influences and goals<lb />to attain social and economic<lb />equality.<lb /><lb />Urban League President Hugh<lb />Price said, "Many of us have been<lb />laboring under the false comfort<lb />that the expansion of the black<lb />middle class and the creation of<lb />individual black millionares have<lb />moved African Americans closer to<lb />economic parity in America. The<lb />reality is that no matter how great<lb />incomes become for individual<lb />Blacks. our wealth is not sustained<lb />because we have very few assets<lb />that can be passed on from<lb />generation to generation. <lb /><lb />Price went on to say that<lb />individual self-sufficiency as im-<lb />portant as that is. cannot be the<lb />ultimate goal." Black folks must<lb />push past that and go for economic<lb />power. Self-empowerment through<lb />combined wealth is the only avenue<lb />African-Americans can use to as-<lb />sure their future. said Price. "We<lb />risk missing out on prosperity in<lb />the next millennium if community<lb />leaders fail to set a new agenda<lb />based on amassing wealth and<lb />accumulating assets. he added.<lb /><lb />The National Urban League<lb /><lb />called on brother organizations<lb />such as the NAACP to join efforts<lb />for tougher economic accountabil-<lb />ity of civil and economic rights for<lb />all civil and economic rights for all<lb />Americans. The League announced<lb />at the conference that black fami-<lb />lies need to spend less to save and<lb />invest more. The organization has<lb />called for the creation of govern-<lb />ment programs that would help<lb />more minorities buy homes and<lb />businesses and learn marketable job<lb />skills. The National Urban League<lb />urged American's universities, cor-<lb />porations. labor unions, and all<lb />Organizations as well as the gov-<lb />ernment to make a renewed com-<lb />mitment to affirmative action.<lb /><lb />Vice-President Gore presence<lb />during the Business and Labor<lb />Luncheon underscores the Clinton<lb />Administration's endorsement of<lb />the National Urban League and its<lb />commitment to diversity in_ the<lb />workplace. Gore joined Sears Chair<lb />&amp; CEO Arthur Martinez in pre-<lb />senting the National Urban League<lb />with a million dollar check from<lb />Sears. POPE<lb /><lb />Bennie Rountree<lb /><lb />Bennic Rountree has been<lb />President of the Pitt County<lb />Souther Christian Leadership<lb /><lb />Conferciice (SCLC) for the past 26<lb />years. He had served as Vice<lb />President for 10 years before be-<lb />coming President. The SCLC was<lb />founded by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther<lb />King. Jr. in 1957 to fight for civil<lb />rights.<lb /><lb />Rountree has continued to work<lb />tirelessly with the SCLC for nearly<lb />40) years. He has worked in Pitt<lb /><lb />'WE MUST<lb />BE ROLE<lb />MODELS, T<lb />SAYS LEGAL<lb />LEGEND<lb />GARY<lb /><lb />County in helping to improve the<lb />social conditions for black people.<lb />With nearly 600 members,<lb />Rountree has the largest and one of<lb />the most effective chapters in the<lb />state of North Carolina.<lb /><lb />Without the aid of a college<lb />degree or even a high school<lb />diploma, Rountree has established<lb />himself as a very strong and viable<lb />force in the area of civil rights and<lb />economic development. Aside from<lb />being at the forefront for black<lb />equality, he has continued to run-<lb />ning a successful real estate busi-<lb />ness. A firm believer in black<lb />economic empowerment he has also<lb />continued to emphasize the impor-<lb />tance of Blacks having their own<lb />businesses.<lb /><lb />With little or no formal educa-<lb />tion, Rountree has used common<lb />sense and wisdom to become a<lb />well-respected leader in the Pitt<lb />County Community. Even though<lb />Rountree has been asked to dine<lb />with the governor and heads of<lb />states, Rountree affirmed that it is<lb />the joy in doing the little things<lb />toward helping his fellow man that<lb />are most rewarding.<lb /><lb />Rountree grew up poor, having to<lb />work hard in cotton fields at a very<lb />early age. He became very inter-<lb />ested in civil rights when he<lb />noticed how much better off white<lb />families were socially and economi-<lb />cally when compared with blacks.<lb />As ayouth, he couldn't understand<lb /><lb />this. but he knew that things<lb />needed to change for black people.<lb />These memories prompted his de-<lb />sire to work to help black people to<lb />become morc self-sufficient.<lb /><lb />A man of selflessness and grati-<lb />tude. Rountree has always served<lb />others. sometimes before thinking<lb />of himself. When he got old<lb />enough to work to save money. he<lb />used the money that he saved to<lb />buy homes for his three sisters<lb />before he bought one for him-<lb />self."My mother died when | was<lb />18 months old and my oldest sister<lb />raised me. I bought her a house<lb />when I was 20 years old as a way<lb />of showing thanks." says Rountree.<lb />"Il also bought my other sister a<lb />house and made a good down<lb />payment on one for my other<lb />sister, he adds.<lb /><lb />A servant of the community,<lb />Rountree strongly believes in giv-<lb />ing back to help others. "I belicve<lb />that a person should be thankful for<lb />what he has. Even when I was very<lb />poor, | was always thankful for<lb />what I did have. | am thankful to<lb />God for what I have now. That is<lb />why I'm willing to serve the people<lb />ant the community, he explains.<lb /><lb />At his own expense. Rountree<lb />has hosted a radio program dedi-<lb />cated to the dream of his mentor.<lb />Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. for he<lb />past three years. He has used tne<lb />program to talk to people about<lb /><lb />IIE ROUNTREE:<lb /><lb />social problems in an effort to call<lb />the community to action .<lb /><lb />Rountree, who just attended the<lb />SCLC convention in Washington.<lb />DC.. and gave a personal donation<lb />of $1.000 to the organization. says<lb />that he will continue to fight<lb />racism as Pitt County SCLC<lb />President. In addition to fighting<lb />racism. a goal for this year includes<lb />trving to help young people. He is<lb />deeply concerned about unemploy-<lb />ment. drug abuse. and the school<lb />dropout rate among vouth.<lb /><lb />"The youth are our future and we<lb />must all do our part in helping the<lb />next generation to be the best that<lb />they can be." explained Rountree.<lb /><lb />Left Coach Al Powell, author of the 400z Scandal is pictured with<lb />Congresswoman Eva Clayton, along with Rural and Economics<lb />Development Director Thadlock (back) and Rev. <p>oe a ee,<lb /><lb />tes in African Americans<lb /><lb /> Diabetes Information Clearinghous, NIH Publication No. 97-3266, March 1997<lb /><lb />How Do Diabetes<lb /><lb />Complications ye African<lb /><lb />Americans?<lb />Compared to White Americans,<lb />African experience<lb /><lb />higher rates of three diabetes<lb /><lb />complications--blindness, kidney<lb /><lb />_ failure, and amputations. They also<lb /><lb />experience. greater disability from<lb />these complications. Some factors<lb />that influence the frequency of<lb />these complications such as delay<lb />in diagnosis and treatment of<lb />diabetes, denial of diabetes. abnor-<lb />mal blood lipids, high blood pres-<lb />sure, and cigarette smoking. can be<lb />influenced by proper diabetes man-<lb />agement.<lb />Kidney Failure<lb />African Americans experience kid-<lb />ney failure, also called end-stage<lb />renal disease (ESRD), from 2.5 to<lb />5.5 times more often than white<lb />Americans. Interestingly though,<lb />hypertension, not diabetes. is the<lb />leading cause of kidney failure in<lb />black Americans. Hypertension ac-<lb />counts for almost 38 percent of<lb />ESRD cases in African Americans.<lb />whereas diabetes causes 32.5 per-<lb />cent. In spite of their high rates of<lb />the disease, African Americans<lb />have better survival rates from<lb />kidney failure than white<lb />Americans.<lb />Visual Impairment<lb /><lb />The frequency of severe visual<lb />impairment is 40 percent higher in<lb />African Americans with diabetes<lb />than in white Americans. Blindness<lb />caused by diabetic retinopathy is<lb />twice as common in blacks as in<lb />whites. Compared to white women.<lb />black women are three times more<lb />likely to become blind with diabe-<lb />tes. African American men have a<lb />30% higher rate of blindness than<lb />white American men. Diahetic<lb />retinopathy may occur more fre-<lb />quently in black Americans than<lb />whites because of their higher rate<lb />of hypertension.<lb />Amputations<lb /><lb />African Americans undergo more<lb />diabetes-related = lower-cxtremity<lb />amputations than white or Hispanic<lb />Americans. One study of 1990 U.S<lb />hospital discharge figures showed<lb />amputation rates for African<lb />Americans with diabetes were 19<lb />percent higher than for white<lb />Americans. In a 1991 California<lb />study. however. African Americans<lb />were 72 percent more likely to have<lb />diabetes-related amputations than<lb />white Americans. and 117 percent<lb />more likely than Hispanic<lb /><lb />The Minority<lb />W(o) (erm later<lb /><lb />310 Evans St. Mail,<lb />P.O. By 1993,<lb />however, according to the Centers<lb />for Disease Control and<lb />Prevention's National Center for<lb />Health Statistics, death certificates<lb />listed diabetes as the fifth leading<lb />cause of death for African<lb />Americans aged 45 to 64, and the<lb />third leading cause of death for<lb />those aged 65 and older in 1990.<lb />Diabetes is more dangerous for<lb />African American women, for<lb />whom it was the third leading<lb />cause of death for all ages in 1990.<lb /><lb />Diabetes death rates may actually<lb />be higher than these studies show<lb />for two reasons. First, diabetes<lb />might not have been diagnosed.<lb />Second, many doctors do not list<lb />diabetes as a cause of death, even<lb />when the person was known to<lb />have diabetes.<lb /><lb />Prevention<lb />In 1996, NIDDK launched its<lb />Diabetes Prevention Program<lb /><lb />(DPP). The goal of this research<lb />effort is to learn how to prevent<lb />Type 2 diabetes in people with<lb />impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)<lb />and in women with a history of<lb />gestational diabetes. As mentioned,<lb />both are strong risk factors for Type<lb />2 diabetes.<lb /><lb />About 4.000 volunteers are par-<lb />ticipating in DPP. The study is<lb />being conducted at 25 centers<lb />throughout the United States and<lb />has enrolled volunteers from<lb />groups at high risk for developing<lb />Type 2 diabetes. Because of the<lb />propensity toward diabetes among<lb />some ethnic groups, about half of<lb />the DPP participants are African<lb />American. Hispanic American, and<lb />Native American. Other at-risk<lb />participants are the elderly, over-<lb />weight people and women with a<lb /><lb />previous history of gestational dia<lb /><lb />OPP will evaluate three interven- "<lb /><lb />tions to prevent Type 2: an inten-<lb />sive healthy eating and exercise<lb />program and the use of two<lb />diabetes medications, metformin<lb />and troglitazone. Researchers will<lb />tailor interventions to the cultural<lb />needs of individuals in the pro-<lb />gram. The DPP began in 1996 and<lb />will follow participants for about<lb />five years, with findings to be<lb />released before 2005.<lb /><lb />Points to Remember<lb /><lb />**#In_ 1993, 1.3 million African<lb />Americans were known to have<lb />diabetes. This is almost three times<lb />the number of African Americans<lb />who were diagnosed with diabetes<lb />in 1963.<lb /><lb />**For every white American who<lb />gets diabetes 1.6 African American<lb />gets diabetes.<lb /><lb />**The highest incidence of dia-<lb />betes in blacks occurs between 65<lb />to 74 years of age. Twenty-five<lb />percent of these individuals have<lb />diabetes.<lb /><lb />**Obesity is a major medical risk<lb />factor for diabetes in African<lb />Americans, especially for women.<lb />Some diabetes mav be<lb />prevented with weight control<lb /><lb />through healthy eating and<lb />regular exercise.<lb />** African Americans have<lb /><lb />higher incidence of and greater<lb />disability from diabetes complica-<lb />tions such as kidney failure,<lb />visual impairment, and amputa-<lb />tions.<lb /><lb />**1f African Americans can pre-<lb />vent, reverse. or control diabetes.<lb />their risk of complications will<lb />decrease.<lb /><lb />**Healthy lifestyles. such as cat-<lb />ing healthy foods and getting<lb />regular exercise. are particularly<lb /><lb />important for people who are at.<lb /><lb />increased risk of diabetes.<lb /><lb />Freedom of the press won its first victory in the American Colonies in<lb />1735, when John Peter Zenger, editor of the New York Weekly Journal,<lb />was acquitted of criminal libel for attacking the British governor.<lb /><lb />Suffering<lb />from:<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb />/ Headaches ®<lb />Back pain rx<lb /><lb />Neck pain<lb /><lb />Leg pain<lb /><lb />Hip pain<lb /><lb />Shoulder pain<lb />Muscle spasms<lb />Numbness<lb /><lb />?<lb /><lb />f, 2 x-rays (if considered necessary)<lb /><lb />thorough<lb />nation of treatment, contidential report of findings ($105.00<lb /><lb />DIEKS<lb />CHIROPRACTIC<lb /><lb />NEW PATIENT CERTIFICATE " "_ " "- "<lb />Present this certificate for a complete Chiropractic<lb />Evaluation "Free!
