Pope<lb /><lb />supply closets on ECU Campus<lb /><lb />Members of the Housekeeping Staff hold up posters found near<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE A press confer-<lb />ence was held last week at the<lb />Philippi Church of Christ by some<lb />members of the United Electrical<lb />and Machine Workers of America<lb />(UE Local 150) of East Carolina<lb />University. The UE Local 150<lb />group of four housekeeping em-<lb />ployees called the conference be-<lb />cause of alleged acts of racism that<lb />have occurred at the college.<lb /><lb />The latest incident involved a<lb />poster of a black man who appeared<lb />to have been beaten and tied to a<lb />tree. The poster was hung in a<lb />janitorial closet late one night<lb />while the housekeeping staff was at<lb />work, The university administra-<lb />tion was contacted, but the workers<lb />feel that the case has not been<lb />thoroughly investigated.<lb /><lb />The housekeeping staff is<lb />accusing the ECU administration<lb />of sweeping what they feel is a hate<lb />crime under the rug. "The<lb />University is draggin its feet on<lb />this and nothing has been done to<lb />our satisfaction," said Harold<lb />Willoughby, a housekeeper and<lb />member of the UE Local 150.<lb /><lb />ECU attorney Toi Carter said<lb />the investigation is nearing an end<lb />and no guspect has been found. The<lb /><lb />University has offered a $500<lb />reward for information leading to<lb />an arrest. "After interviewing al-<lb />most 40 people, no one has been<lb />found who saw or heard anything,"<lb />said Carter.<lb /><lb />The offensive posters were<lb /><lb />put up a week before Martin .<lb /><lb />Luther King, Jr. Day in January.<lb />Posters have been put up on the<lb />three floors where the black jani-<lb />tors work. Another janitor who is<lb />white found no poster on his floor.<lb />In addition to the poster of<lb />the beaten man chained to a tree,<lb />another poster was found of blacks<lb />ing sprayed with fire hoses as in the<lb />1960's civil rights marches. At another<lb />time, a poster of a slaveship was found<lb />near a janitor Ts closest.<lb /><lb />The workers also reported<lb />that a hangman's noose was found<lb />hanging from a file cabinet. The<lb />housekeepers said that the hang-<lb />man's noose and the posters repre-<lb />sent a pattern of racist incidents at<lb />the University, They also reported<lb />that an increase in racial intimida-<lb />tion and harassment of housekeep-<lb />ers in the past two years.<lb />Housekeepers have continuously<lb />complained about racism and dis-<lb />crimination in their qennen.<lb /><lb />A couple of years ago. a<lb /><lb />§ former supervisor used a racial slur<lb /><lb />when talking to a couple of the<lb /><lb />B housekeepers. Last year Chancellor<lb />MEakin found that the overwhelm-<lb /><lb />ing approach used in supervising<lb /><lb /> othe housekeepers was a controlling<lb /><lb />approach. The housekeeping staff<lb />who kept records of grievances<lb />about working conditions were as a<lb />result allegedly routinely treated un-<lb />fairly and had their work schedules<lb />intensified by their supervisors.<lb /><lb />"The housekeepers. like Sal<lb />DeMarco (a white professor who<lb />was fired) are going through hard<lb />times and a lot of problems at the<lb />university." said Willoughby. press<lb />conference spokesperson. "We are<lb />really concerned about the posters<lb />because we have female workcrs<lb />alone on floors at night and we fear<lb />for their safety," he added.<lb /><lb />The university administration<lb />did contact police and security was<lb />placed at the entrance of each floor<lb />for two weeks.<lb /><lb />Chancellor Richard Eakin<lb />sent a letter to all housckecping<lb />employees denouncing the postcr<lb />incident. Eakin said in an inter-<lb />view that he was distressed by this<lb />incident. He said that acts mot-<lb />vated by a desire to spread hate and<lb />dissension not only violates East<lb />Carolina University policies on<lb />racial harassment but also violates<lb />the spirit of mutual respect this<lb />campus strives to achieve. Eakin<lb />met with the janitors and ap-<lb />pointed a committee to handle the<lb />housekeepers concerns and gricv-<lb />ances,<lb /><lb />Housekeepers still fecl that<lb />their concerns are not being ad-<lb />dressed properly and scriousl\<lb />They are upset over how ECU Is<lb />handling the investigation of the<lb />posters and their complaints of<lb />racism at the university.<lb /><lb />The UE Local 150 represent-<lb />ing workers at five of the UNC<lb />system 16 schools has been speak-<lb />ing out as part of a statewide union<lb />and movement to improve working<lb />conditions and to empower UNC<lb />service workers. PETERSBURG, Florida --<lb />L\nda Shorter. a former secretary<lb />lor the National Baptist<lb />Convention's President Henry J.<lb />Lyons. has been described by<lb />newspapers accounts as "a_ key<lb />prosecution witness against Rev.<lb />Lyons."<lb /><lb />However, the truthfulness of<lb />statements Shorter has provided to<lb />Florida prosecutors has been drawn<lb />into question. According to a copy<lb />of Shorter's statements. some cf<lb />those statements accused Lyons<lb />and 2 local assistant elementary<lb />schoo! principal of having a sexual<lb />encounter, Shorter also reportedly<lb />told prosecutors that Lyons was<lb />paving the assistant principal's<lb />Mortgage<lb /><lb />Apparently concerned that<lb />some of her statements to prosecu-<lb />tors might lead to a defamation<lb />lawsuit by Lyons and the female<lb />principal. who is also a member of<lb />Lyons T church. Shorter retained a<lb />lawyer That lawver. Nathaniel<lb />Tindall. who was once a member of<lb />Lyons T church. filed a lawsuit last<lb />week sccking a court order that<lb />would essentially prevent Lyons<lb /><lb />from filing defamation claims<lb />against his client.<lb />In court. Lyons T attorney<lb /><lb />called into question the truthful-<lb />ness of Shorter's statements to<lb />prosecutors Additionally, the at-<lb />torney made sirong inquiry into the<lb />admitted failure of prosecutors to<lb />investigate some of Shorter's claim<lb />and their decision to include the<lb />claims in a prosecution memoran-<lb />dum that was eventually released to<lb /> dhe media.<lb /><lb />At the close of the hearing,<lb />Pinellas County Circuit Court<lb />Judge John Lenderman denied the<lb />request. of Shorter's attorney.<lb />According to a recent newspaper<lb />article. Shorter's attorney said he<lb />would challenge the judge's ruling<lb />in Florida's Second District Court<lb />of Appeal.<lb /><lb />Meanwhile. Lyons' attorney<lb />has stated that his client will no<lb />longer sit back and allow his<lb />name. and the good name of<lb />Church members and convention<lb />members to be drug through the<lb />mud by those aligned with the<lb />media."<lb /><lb />The time has come to fight<lb />back and hold people accountable<lb />for any false statements they are<lb />making against Dr. Lyons and<lb />members of National Baptist<lb />Convention," the lawyer said.<lb /><lb />descent. That is the claim of<lb />internationally renowned attorney,<lb />Dr. Robert L. Brock. Dr. Brock<lb />educates African-Americans on<lb />i making their claims and obtaining<lb />q their reparations. Dr. Brock heads<lb />the Self-Determination Committee<lb />j in Washington, DC. where he has<lb />§ worked for black reparations for<lb />over 40 years.<lb /><lb />Ron McNeil of Joy Temple<lb />§ Holiness Church, who has worked<lb />closely with Brock conducted a<lb />workshop last Saturday at the<lb />Dubois Center. Commissioner Jeff<lb />Savage was a guest speaker who<lb />spoke on some local issues relating<lb />to reparations. Robert Johnson, of<lb />Georgia who has also worked with<lb />Brock, gave a talk and informed<lb />the workshop participants that Dr.<lb />Brock's work was now on the<lb />internet. Dr. Brock's train broke<lb />down en route to the workshop and<lb />he was therefore unable to present<lb />as scheduled.<lb /><lb />Dr. Brock has successfully<lb />laid the legal foundation for blacks<lb />to get the money for slavery and<lb />past injustices. Because he defeated<lb />the United States (and IRS) in the<lb />US Supreme Court, a legal founda-<lb />tion has been laid for blacks to<lb />make legal claims.<lb /><lb />Dr. Brock is currently circu-<lb />lating a petition to sign for those<lb />who want reparations. His work is<lb />leading to the revolution. immobili-<lb />zation and vitalization of the<lb />African-American Community.<lb />Another workshop is forthcoming.<lb /><lb />Dr. Robert Brock<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE Reparations arc<lb />not new. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />f<lb /><lb />*<lb />=<lb /><lb />;<lb /><lb />= A major legal drama is unfolding in a Manhattan, N.Y. courtroom where federal prosecutors are trying for<lb />the second time to convict boxing promoter, Don King of a fraudulent connection with a 1991 boxing match.<lb />King's first trial in 1995 ended with a hung jury when the government was unable to prove its case against him.<lb />Now the prosecutors are presenting their case again after exercising what presiding Judge Lawrence McKenna<lb /><lb />ribed as "judicial vindictiveness" by expanding the original charge to include his corporation, Don King<lb /><lb />Ctions. .<lb /><lb />« Based on information provided by Joe Maffia, a former employee who resigned from Don King Productions<lb />after King accused him of stealing, government attorneys allege that the corporation submitted a false claim to<lb />insure Lloyd's of London for reimbursement of $350,00 in nonrefundable training expenses. The fact that Lloyd's<lb />iid not challenge the claim or initiate legal proceedings against King, and that similar disputes between<lb />Gorporations are usually treated as civil matters, have led more than a few observers to question the real<lb />fhotivation behind the case.<lb /><lb />* The government has continued its prosecution despite appeals to Attorney General Janet Reno for a review<lb />of the charges against King by a number of national leaders including The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Senator<lb />Carol Mosely-Braun, Kweisi Mfume (NAACP), Dr. Dorothy Height (National Council of Negro Women), The<lb />Rev. Joseph Lowery (of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Hugh Price (National Urban League) and<lb />Congressman Bobby Rush. Rather than responding positively to the concerns expressed by African American<lb />leadership, the government has elected to parade a group of King's critics, competitor, disgruntled former business<lb />associations and other questionable witnesses before the jury in a desperate attempt to obtain conviction.<lb /><lb />A number of differences are apparent between the current trial and the one that preceded it. King's attorneys<lb />succeeded in increasing the number of African Americans on the jury to five, from one in the first trial, and they<lb />have exposed numerous inconsistencies in testimony by government witnesses. In addition, the New York City<lb />press corps is giving this trial far less coverage than they did the first one.<lb /><lb />The government's aggressive prosecution of this case despite a lack of solid evidence raises a basic question:<lb />Why are they trying so hard to put Don King, a man who paid over $30 million in taxes last year, behind bars?<lb />a ek at the multi-billion dollar industry of televised sporting events may provide some clues to just what's at<lb /><lb />3<lb /><lb />A recent study by Richard E. Lapchick, director for the Center of Sports in Society at Boston's Northeastern's ,<lb /><lb />University, reported that no blacks had majority ownership or control of professional sports franchises in America.<lb />Black athletes made up 79% of the players in the National Basketball Association, 66 percent of those in the<lb />National Football League and 17 percent of those in Major League Baseball. Yet they account for only 28 percent<lb />of those people running day-to-day operations in the NBA, 13 percent in the NFL and three percent in baseball.<lb />The picture was even bleaker in in the increasingly lucrative business of college sports where nearly 90 percent<lb />of NCAA Division | athletic directors were white, and only 43 black males counted among 2,733 NCAA coaches<lb />(1.5 percent).<lb /><lb />In an elite arena traditionally reserved for white males, Don King stands alone as the first and only African<lb />American to have controlling interest in a major television sport in the United States. It has widely reported that<lb />fie has generated more millions for more fighters than any boxing promoter in history. It is no secret that he also<lb />Spntinues to donate much of his wealth to support education, people in need and many organizations, including<lb />some that critics have regarded as controversial, like Nelson Mandela's African National Congress during its<lb /><lb />t to overthrow apartheid.<lb />Don King's prominence. independence, and longevity in the boxing business reflect the reality that some in<lb />r nation's power structure are unwilling to readily accept. Like others before him who have advanced the cause<lb />African Americans, he has challenged and overcome barriers imposed by institutional racism to reach the<lb />pinnacle of success in his field. As a result, those who seek to maintain the unjust economic and political<lb />imbalance that persist in professional sports regard him as a serious threat.<lb /><lb />+<lb /><lb />ce<lb /><lb />_<lb />he<lb />KRleaver's Klippins .<lb /><lb />In Retrospect: There Really I<lb /><lb />History to Black Music...<lb />By Jim Cleaver<lb /><lb />Just recently, there was an announcement that June had been proclaimed Black Music Month. This of course<lb />yrought about some serious questions. Who proclaimed it such? What purpose does it serve? And if there was<lb />ome money to be made. who will make it?<lb /><lb />As background, in the month of September, 1960, a record promoter, Granville (Granny) White, orchestrated<lb />he signing of Aretha Franklin to Columbia Records. That was a major event in the annals of music. The signing<lb />ook place in the lavish Detroit home of her father, the late Rev. Clarence Lavon Franklin.<lb /><lb />Aside from superstars like Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones and a scant handful of others. this<lb />was the first time such a furor had been made about signing a recording artist.<lb /><lb />After a few false starts Aretha Franklin's career really took off and today she is called the Queen of Soul. We<lb />need to remember that the late Dinah Washington also held the title. There was somebody before her and before<lb />rer. The list seems interminable.<lb /><lb />What we need to remember is simple. These artists are great. Make no mistake about it. They deserve every<lb />ccolade they get. Some deserve even more. We must remember however that all of this hype brings money to the<lb />ecord companies and the radio stations. The promoters of major concerts use the hype to build their audiences.<lb />There is no conscience here. Social or otherwise.<lb /><lb />It is interesting to note that as we celebrate Black Music Month, we are also celebrating artists whose primary<lb />hrust is to see how profane they can be without incurring the wrath of the Federal Communications Commission.<lb /><lb />In that same context, we are also celebrating artists whose song lyrics invite us to kill police officers and/or<lb />ll figures of authority. These are the artists whose vocabularies start and end with four letter and five letter words<lb />hat we were taught thal should not be used in mixed company.<lb /><lb />There is a kind of sadness about the notion of celebrating artists who commonly refer to women as prostitutes<lb />ind female dogs in the common parlance.<lb /><lb /> oThis brings about a question. Does the idea of financial success supplant the essential principles and morals<lb /><lb />hat have been a way of life in black communities since the end of slavery? Is it more important to drive a $75,000<lb /><lb />ptomobile and live in Beverly Hills than to protect the sanctity of our women and children?<lb /><lb />". Whatever happened to the Gamble and Huffs, Mickey Stevenson, Berry Gordy and another long list of<lb />jtimate musicians? Of course we have Babyface Edmunds and his wife and groups Boyz to Men, Take Six and<lb />of the dynamic female singers. Oleta Adams, Mariah Carey, etc. These people are legitimate in their<lb /><lb />h and their delivery and they make music a joy.<lb /><lb />With few exceptions, they don't even come close to the rapping rubble where money is concerned. These<lb /><lb />ists are truly deserving of honor and glory.<lb /><lb />The problem is that our young people are flocking to the other side of the fence. It is all but impossible to<lb /><lb />down any street anywhere in metropolitan Los Angeles without being blasted out of your shoes by these<lb /><lb />lous booming speakers with profanities spewing like garbage in a strong wind.<lb /><lb />Perhaps we should look at the various days of celebration and then make some decisions about what we want<lb /><lb />} music in the community at large. This may very well be a time when parents need to pay close attention to<lb /><lb />phat their children are hearing, dancing to, and otherwise mimicking.<lb /><lb />« " It is kind of like when a child is small and does some small thing out of the ordinary. Parents think it is cute<lb /><lb />have the child show off to the neighbors and the friends. A little later when that thing, whatever it is, becomes<lb />ive to both the parents and society, it is to late too change the child. The die is cast and there is not much<lb />be done to change it.<lb /><lb />- " we come back to the words of King Solomon. oTrain up a child in the way he should go and when<lb /><lb />is old, he will not depart from it.<lb /><lb />We celebrate Black Music. We have not however, separated the wheat from the chaff. We are so involved in<lb />ee gen -- big money -- that we have forgotten that we have a moral obligation to our children and to our<lb /><lb />as <lb /><lb />Despite the cries to the contrary, we have come a long way as a people. The sadness of it is that we are<lb /><lb />ing to a level of degradation that is lower than when we were in bondage and had little or no hope.<lb /><lb />4 makes it even worse is the fact that many of our own people are the driving forces behind this madness,<lb /><lb />that you have enjoyed Black Music -- if you think the bulk of the music is worth the celebration.<lb /><lb />~ In all with this view. The only problem is there's no mention of education, a<lb />profession, and concern for his community during and after his glory days end.<lb /><lb />Jesus. the basketball player like thousands of young Blacks is hooked on the other worldiy intoxication of<lb />sports.<lb /><lb />The aspiring "Jordans" and pro footballers spend countless hours mastering their dribbling or ball carrying<lb />skills with little thought to their future after their sports days are finished. They live for the day when they will<lb />sign stratospheric pro contracts. Their head are stuffed with visions of fist fulls of dollars and aro further swelled<lb />by scanning the Forbes list and seeing that the richest athletes in the world are Black. The hungrily lo at Jordan<lb />who took home a hefty 12.6 million in 1996, and pocketed about $40 million more on the side of endorsements.<lb />(Mike slipped that year. He was only the number two money maker in 1996. He was number on the previous<lb />year, but was beaten out in '96 by the other big money Mike {Tyson} who hauled in $75 million).<lb /><lb />Most Black athletes will never get these big paydays playing games. The chance of a- Black high school<lb />athlete making it to the pros in any sport is 1 in 18,000. Only 2.3 percent or 215 of the 9,500 college football<lb />seniors will be drafted by the NFL. And the odds are 250 to one that a college basketball player will ever wear<lb />an NBA jersey.<lb /><lb />The chances of a Black ex-jocks owning, running, managing and working in a non-capacity for pro teams<lb /><lb />are equally dreary. As of 1998 there were no Black football, baseball, or basketball team owners. There are few<lb />Black baseball managers, or football coaches. There was only one Black team doctor in baseball, none in football,<lb />and only a handful of Black team trainers in all the sports combined.<lb />_ That is not where the real money is made for non-players anyway. In 1996, there was $14 billion yearly<lb />involved in product marketing, franchising, leasing and sports agentry in the big three pro sports, baseball.<lb />basketball and football. Pro sports owners and players have not moved mountains to Blacks get a piece of the<lb />action either. Of course, it takes capital, connections and clout to crack this rigidly closed circle, and most Blacks,<lb />or Whites for that matter, don't have them. But many blacks do, and they are still endlessly stonewalled when it<lb />comes to getting league owners to believe that they can deliver.<lb /><lb />Many Black Athletes are also stonewalled when it comes to getting a college degree. The report card on the<lb />graduation rates for Black athletes at 50 Division I schools is an abomination. The majority of the schools during<lb />the 1990s graduated less than one-third of their Black players. Four graduated none. Many athletes waltz through<lb />three or four years at college and still emerge as educational cripples, with a curriculum filled with Physical<lb />education, crafts, Physical therapy, and piles of general studies courses. ;<lb /><lb />The even sadder thing is that many adult Blacks are guilty of sowing fields of delusions about sports among<lb />the young. This includes many Black parents, relatives, friends, associates, teachers and counselors who<lb />obsessively demand that their children excel on the diamond, or gridiron, but not in the classrooms.<lb /><lb />Fortunately however, there are also many African American parents who understand that the antidote to<lb />sports Junkism is 0 hold coaches, teachers and counselors accountable for their children's performance in the<lb />classroom, not just on the athletic court or field. need support and encouragement. However, one African-American who has been in the forefront of the<lb />struggle is Congresswoman Eva M. Clayton, First Congressional District Representative for the State of North<lb />Carolina. Although her accomplishments for the African-American community are commendable, she is truly a<lb />resi commitment-driven leader for all members of her district, irrespective of race, creed, religion, or<lb /><lb />cap. :<lb /><lb />A native of Savannah, Georgia, Eva Clayton made history in 1992 when she became the first<lb />African-American to woman to represent the State of North Carolina. Of course, George White (black)<lb />represented North Carolina in the House until he left office under intimidation and pressure in 1901. First, they need a base, a<lb />center, a place. All these words add<lb />up to security, the feeling that "no<lb />matter what happens I have a place<lb />to go for support." In addition,<lb />teenagers need their families to<lb />provide them with chances to<lb />develop responsibility and inde-<lb />pendence. For the early adolescent,<lb />it may mean going to camp for a<lb /><lb />Looking Back.....<lb /><lb />week and getting homesick. For the<lb />older teen, it may mean a summer<lb />or after-school job. Third, teenag-<lb />ers need rules and expectations<lb />from their families. A youth who<lb />doesn't know what his parents<lb />expect of him may already feel<lb />"lost" in the world. He'll go looking<lb />for direction--and he will find it<lb />somewhere, even if it is with some<lb />cult or gang. The best rules<lb />however are flexible ones. A young<lb />person needs to clearly know when<lb />a Tule has been broken. But, he also<lb />needs to know how to restore<lb />family relationships. Fourth, any<lb />teenager needs a lot of "communi-<lb />cation" with the adults in his<lb />family. Parents can use mealtime to<lb />be interested and to ask non-<lb />threatening questions, such as "I<lb />heard this record on the car<lb />radio--what do you think it<lb />means?" Teenagers need important<lb />things from their families. They<lb />need a base, some opportunities,<lb />some expectations and some "com-<lb />munication." It is those things, not<lb />movies, cars, and new clothes that<lb />help your teenager become a<lb />mature adult. .<lb /><lb /> Strong Men Discusing Strong<lb /><lb />Shown above at the DuBois Center several years ago is Congressman<lb />Jesse Jackson. <lb />tions is exactly the kind of abuse<lb />we have been trying to prevent,"<lb />said Pierre Sutton, chairman of<lb /><lb />Black Owned Broadcasters<lb />(NABOB).<lb /><lb />At issue is a 1997 internal<lb />memo that was circulated at<lb />Amcasts, a division of Katz Media<lb />Group based in New York City. It<lb />was included in an Amcasts train-<lb />ing manual, which told company<lb />salespeople to use pitches such as<lb />buying too many ads on ethnic<lb />radio stations would mean " losing<lb />the more important white segment<lb />of the population, ? advertisers can<lb />reach "all the ethnics you need<lb />without even using an ethnic<lb />station" and, "when it comes to<lb />delivering prospects, not suspects,<lb />the urbans deliver the largest<lb />amount of listeners who turn out to<lb />be the least likely to purchase."<lb /><lb />Soon after acquiring a copy of<lb />the memo, Tavis Smiley, a political<lb />commentator who appears twice<lb />weekly on the "Tom Joyner<lb />Morning Show" (which is syndi-<lb />cated to more than 95 Black radio<lb />stations. including § Howard<lb />University's WHUR), launched a<lb />series of commentaries that took<lb />Katz to task.<lb /><lb />Smiley chastised Katz owner,<lb />Stuart Olds, in four consecutive<lb />commentaries for allowing a racist<lb />attitudes to exist within the corpo-<lb />ration, and he encouraged Tom<lb />Joyner Show listeners to call and<lb />fax their displeasure with the<lb />company until Olds agreed to<lb />apologize publicly to Black radio<lb />stations owners and their listeners.<lb />The plight of Black-owned media's<lb />attempt to achieve equitable treat-<lb />ment from corporate American<lb />through advertising has been a<lb />long and enduring struggle. As<lb />was stated by Smiley, Black radio<lb />stations not only receive less that<lb />their fair share of advertising from<lb />companies supported by Black<lb />consumers, but they are also paid<lb />less for the amount of advertising<lb />they do receive. The same holds<lb />true for Black print media, as well.<lb /><lb />Dorothy Leavell, president of<lb />the National Newspaper Publishers<lb />Association, a trade association<lb />representing the nation Ts black<lb />newspapers, charged Katz Media<lb />memo "is further proof that racism<lb />has permeated this country. They<lb />were foolish enough to put it on<lb />paper at Katz, you can transfer it to<lb />any of the other advertising agen-<lb />cies. I'm not surprised, but am<lb />disappointed that those who re-<lb />ceived such a memo have not taken<lb />steps to cut out the attitude that all<lb />African Americans are criminals."<lb /><lb />Hector Hanibal, program di-<lb />rector at WHUR, agrees that such a<lb />memo is not unique to companies<lb />like Katz Media. " This is a really<lb />a big, big problem, and not just for<lb />Katz Media. Discrimination is<lb />indeed widespread in this industry<lb />and it really needs to be ad-<lb />dressed."<lb /><lb />"Texaco stepped it up and we<lb />expect the advertising agencies to<lb />step it up, too," commented Joyner,<lb />who along with Smiley, finally met<lb />with Katz Media President Stuart<lb />Olds. "We want results now. It's<lb />time to right the wrongs that<lb />produced this."<lb /><lb />While noting that the memo<lb />was a "draft document never<lb />intended to be released," Olds<lb />stated that he wanted Black listen-<lb />ers to know" that is was totally<lb />unacceptable and not reflective of<lb />the way we strive to do business<lb />inside of our organization."<lb /><lb />According to Joyner, Olds<lb />announced several new steps his<lb />company will take to address<lb /><lb />The Minority<lb />foyror=m lalen<lb /><lb />ee , . AFRICA - Casting<lb />|| light into the murkiest corners of<lb />the apartheid state and the human<lb />psyche, a panel probing human<lb />rights abuses in South Africa is<lb />revealing a world of science gone<lb />mad.<lb /><lb />Holding the first-ever hear-<lb />ings on the apartheid-era govern-<lb /><lb />ment's secret biological and<lb />chemical weapons program, _ the<lb />Truth and Reconciliation<lb /><lb />Commission has been listening to<lb />scientists describe making poisoned<lb /><lb />chocolates, hatching plots to give<lb /><lb /> Nelson Mandella brain damage and<lb />trying to find a germ-warfare agent<lb />that would kill only blacks.<lb /><lb />Ethical standards were aban-<lb />doned as researchers tried to<lb />develop lethal, untraceable poisons<lb />and an anti-fertility drug aimed at<lb />the country's black population.<lb /><lb />The army scientists explained<lb />that they were virtually brain-<lb />washed by government propaganda<lb />in the 1980s that South Africa was<lb />on the brink of falling to commu-<lb /><lb />nism and black rule. They testified<lb />they were willing to stop at almost<lb />nothing to defend white power.<lb /><lb />"That was the psychosis that<lb />prevailed," scientist Dan Goosen<lb />said.<lb /><lb />"I was not thinking rationally<lb />at the time," said Goosen, who<lb />headed a covert biological research<lb />laboratory. "Today I know I was<lb />wrong. You can't do that to people,<lb />it is just not justifiable.<lb /><lb />Retired Archbishop Desmond<lb />Tutu said this week's testimony was<lb /><lb />the most shocking he has heard as<lb />chairman of the " Truth<lb />Commission, set up in 1995 to heal<lb />racial diversions.<lb />_ oHere are people of high<lb />intelligence, coldly and clinically<lb />in white laboratory coats, working<lb />on things they know were meant to<lb />be instruments of destroying peo-<lb />ple." Tutu told the Associated<lb />Press.<lb /><lb />One _ researcher, Andre<lb />Immelman, kept freeze-dried sup-<lb />plies of deadly cholera and anthrax<lb /><lb />in a small refrigerator locked in his<lb />office safe. The amounts were<lb />enough to cause major epidemics.<lb /><lb />_ The scientists said they sup-<lb />plied apartheid hit squads with<lb />poisoned drinks and cigarettes.<lb />Any who had bouts about their<lb />work faced possible assassination if<lb />they broke ranks, claimed scientist<lb />Schalk van Rensburg.<lb /><lb />"We had been told in no<lb />uncertain terms, if you let the side<lb />dovin you are dead," van Rensburg<lb />said.<lb /><lb />Apartheid State Researched Race-Specific Bacterial Weapons)<lb /><lb />Unlike many policemen, sol-<lb /><lb />diers and black liberation<lb />who have told the Truth<lb />Commission of their crimes, the<lb /><lb />men appearing this week were T<lb /><lb />educated at top universities and<lb />dedicated their lives to science.<lb />Run through front companies,<lb />the biological and chemical weap-<lb />ons program was controlled by Dr.<lb />Wouter Basson. He had not testified<lb />yet because his lawyers fear he may<lb />prejudice his upcoming court case<lb />on charges he had a sideline<lb /><lb />business going, making and selling<lb />the drugs mandrax and ectasy.<lb /><lb />However, Goosen gave some<lb />insight into Basson's mindset. The<lb />scientist recalled having tea and<lb />biscuits with Basson during a break<lb />from their deadly research.<lb /><lb />"One day the black people<lb />will take over this country. When<lb />my daughter asks me Daddy, what<lb />did you do to prevent this T, my<lb />conscience will be clear," Basson<lb />said, according to the testimony.<lb /><lb />Van Rensburg described plans<lb />to poison Mandela, before he .<lb />became president, with thallium to -<lb />damage his brain. There was no :<lb />suggestion the plan was ever .<lb />carried out.<lb /><lb />The African National ©<lb />Congress, which won the country's «<lb />first all-race elections in 1994 that -<lb /> marked the end of apartheid, .<lb /><lb />We'll be closed on<lb />the fourth eee<lb /><lb /> oy Third Reich. The Nazi government<lb />used scientists to devise ways of<lb />exterminating millions of Jews,<lb />_ Gypsies and others.<lb /><lb />. Favorite Channe invisible to the larger society.<lb />uction, Selecti<lb /><lb />A half century later, there is<lb />an invisible group of people in our<lb />society, including in communities<lb />1 of color, but there is no hard-hitting<lb />novel to tell their story. The<lb />invisible people are those with<lb />disabilities.<lb /><lb />Eight years ago, the<lb />Americans with Disabilities Act<lb /><lb />signed and went into effect,<lb />prohibiting discrimination on the<lb />basis of disability. And, while it has<lb />made a significant difference in the<lb />lives of many people, the 54<lb />million Americans with disabilities<lb />still face all kinds of discrimina-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />A few weeks ago, I was<lb />speaking in California and I told<lb />the story of a federal judge whose<lb />mother had taught him an impor-<lb />tant lesson as a child growing up in<lb />the South. When his mother saw<lb />busses passing an elderly Black<lb />woman at the bus stop in front of<lb />their house, his mother went and<lb />stood with the Black woman so that<lb />the bus would stop.<lb /><lb />A few days ago. I received a<lb />note from a woman in a wheelchair<lb />who was attending that meeting<lb />and who shared her own similar<lb />experiences today. Often, she has to<lb />get a friend or colleague to stand<lb />with her at the bus stop to ensure<lb />that the bus will stop for her, but it<lb />still happens.<lb /><lb />Not surprisingly, that dis-<lb />crimination against people of color<lb />is evident in the job market. About<lb />half of working age Americans<lb />with disabilities are employed and<lb />only one-fourth severe disabilities<lb />hold a job. People of color with<lb />disabilities face double or triple<lb />jeopardy when it comes to employ-<lb />ment. Almost three-fourths of<lb />African Americans and more than<lb />half of Hispanics with disabilities<lb />are unemployed. The tragedy is<lb />that most disabled people are<lb />capable of working.<lb /><lb />In addition, people of color<lb />with disabilities are less likely to<lb />, receive rehabilitation services and<lb />educational opportunities are less<lb />available and affordable to them.<lb />Inadequate transportation and<lb />housing for people with disabilities<lb />in disadvantaged communities is<lb />limited at best. There are fewer<lb />mentors and role models for people<lb />of color with disabilities and<lb />mainstream job coaching, on-the-<lb />job training and internships are less<lb />frequently available to them<lb /><lb />Finally, some of the organiza-<lb />tions designing programs for the<lb />employment of persons with dis-<lb />abilities do not clearly understand<lb />the cultural differences in commu-<lb /><lb />ion<lb />© SoundRite?"?
