For not only<lb />is my family being investigated,<lb />but the man I love and respect,<lb />who is also my best friend, is being<lb />viewed in an unfavorable light. I<lb />have known this man for nearly 30<lb />years, and the person they are por-<lb />traying in the media, is not the<lb />man neither I nor my children rec-<lb />ognize,? Ms. Lyons said.<lb /><lb />Ms. Lyons was speaking publicly<lb />for the first time since she set fire<lb />to a house she believed to be owned<lb />by her husband and another<lb />woman last summer.<lb /><lb />oThey have twisted every kind-<lb />ness he has ever tried to show oth-<lb />ers and this is deplorable. There<lb />has never been a human being<lb />more generous, thoughtful of oth-<lb />ers and who has dedicated his life<lb />to making life better for others.<lb /><lb />oHe has never been selective<lb /><lb />when it comes to someone in need.<lb />Be it man, woman or child, he has<lb />unselfishly given. To insinuate that<lb />the women he has helped were<lb />somehow romantically involved<lb />with him is ridiculous, when any-<lb />one considers the vast number of<lb />families he has tried to assist. He<lb />was never a womanizer, only a giv-<lb />ing man who had no bounds as to<lb />helping someone.?<lb /><lb />Ms. Lyons said that not only did<lb />her husband stand by her during<lb />her times of alcoholism, but did ev-<lb />erything possible to protect her.<lb /><lb />oMy actions that night were<lb />purely from an alcoholic state and<lb />my family had no idea that the me-<lb />dia would take this storm of my ad-<lb />diction and use it to begin this hor-<lb />rible nightmare, twisting every<lb />word that issued from his lips,? she<lb />said.<lb /><lb />oIf the media is surprised that<lb />the members of our church are<lb />standing steadfastly behind him, it<lb />is only because they have all per-<lb />sonally witnessed his giving per-<lb />sonality. Many are recipients of his<lb />generosity. We are all stunned and<lb />deeply hurt by this abuse. They have been<lb />the main focal point of attack. Cars<lb />and homes were something my<lb />husband signed his signature on<lb />for numerous people. He thinks<lb />nothing of using his established<lb />credit to help others. He feels this<lb />is why God has placed him in such<lb />a position to help. It is a com-<lb />plete 9-1-1 system that, for the<lb />first time, allows communities of<lb />all sizes to affordably benefit from<lb />the fast and simplified handling of<lb />emergency calls.<lb /><lb />Simply put, the system simpli-<lb />fies the 9-1-1 operatorsT job and, in<lb />doing so, provides quantum leaps<lb />in efficiency, flexibility, speed and<lb />accuracy of emergency response.<lb />VISIT ENR allows operators to use a<lb />touch screen, computer mouse or<lb />the keyboard to obtain instant<lb />access to information about 9-1-1<lb />callers.<lb /><lb />The Greater Harris County<lb />Emergency Network in Houston,<lb />the third-largest 9-1-1 operation<lb />in the country, has been using<lb />this system since late February. <lb />«<lb /><lb />Credo of the Black Press<lb /><lb />The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial<lb />and natural antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race,<lb />color or creed, full human rights. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />No, | AinTt FergittinT!<lb /><lb />The burgeoning debate over affir-<lb />mative action and other aspects of<lb />relations between the races has left<lb />some African-Americans shell-<lb />shocked.<lb /><lb />There is the feeling that we as a<lb />people have omissed a meeting?<lb />somewhere, or have been absent for<lb />a crucial lecture before the big test.<lb /><lb />It seems as though the main-<lb />stream attitude toward us in the<lb />South has gone from, oYou [insert<lb />epithet here] need to learn your<lb />place? and oWe donTt serve your kind<lb />here? straight to, oWhy do you all<lb />stop dwelling on the past and learn<lb />to get along??<lb /><lb />The tenor of the discussion from<lb />an astonishing number of white opin-<lb />ion-makers has been that race rela-<lb />tions would be just fine if osome?<lb />black folks would just forgive and<lb />forget, and quit living in the past.<lb /><lb />The inference being that racism,<lb />like slavery, is a sin for which white<lb />society has atoned and which has<lb />been largely eradicated from both<lb />private and public life, so now, recon-<lb />ciliation may well and truly proceed.<lb /><lb />The response of most black folks is<lb />bewilderment and confusion. Maybe<lb /><lb />we were not paying attention when ,<lb /><lb />racism ended and the apology was is-<lb />sued, but we donTt seem to remem-<lb />ber it.<lb /><lb />For that matter, the message<lb />doesnTt seem to have gotten across<lb />to quite a number of white folks, ei-<lb />ther, judging from their reactions to<lb />African-Americans on a daily basis.<lb /><lb />But critics of black oracism? (as<lb />any suggestion that things are less<lb />than peachy-keen in America of the<lb />Nifty Nineties is labeled) donTt dwell<lb />on that uncomfortable aspect.<lb /><lb />What really annoys them, they<lb />say, is that black folks okeep harping<lb />on slavery.? Slavery was over and<lb />done with more than 100 years ago,<lb />they say. Time to get over it and get<lb />on with life.<lb /><lb />That is very wise and prudent ad-<lb />vice, and black folks would be happy<lb />to take it to heart, if not for the fact<lb /><lb />of who it is coming from.<lb /><lb />It is hard to overlook, for instance,<lb />that many of the same folks who are<lb />decrying blacksT silliness in endlessly<lb />dwelling on the history of slavery<lb />are the very ones who have stickers<lb />on their cars with a cartoon Rebel<lb />waving a battle flag and_ the legend,<lb />oHell, no, I ainTt fergittinT!?<lb /><lb />You know the ones we mean.<lb />Folks who grew up not knowing that<lb />odamn Yankee? was two words, and<lb />who will mutter, oThey may of won<lb />the war, but we got Tem at<lb />Chickamaugy.?<lb /><lb />We have all known them. They re-<lb />live bitterly the atrocities the Union<lb />committed on the virgin South dur-<lb />ing and after the War of Northern<lb />Aggression, and many will tell you<lb />that in their history lessons growing<lb />up as late as the T60s, Abraham Lin-<lb />coln was barely mentioned.<lb /><lb />The Civil War ended in 1865. The<lb />last federal occupation troops were<lb />withdrawn from Southern soil by<lb />1878, and soon thereafter, political<lb />control was returned to white hands.<lb /><lb />So we are talking about a period of<lb />ooppression? that lasted, at the most,<lb />13 to 15 years.<lb /><lb />Also, for all their outrage, most of<lb />the horror stories they have about<lb />the Union occupation didnTt involve<lb />wholesale murder, rape and the<lb />usual war atrocities. They were<lb />mainly economic.<lb /><lb />Land was stolen. Property seized.<lb />Outrageous taxes passed. Black<lb />folks given their land (for a while).<lb /><lb />But they have the nerve to tell<lb />black folks they are sick and tired of<lb />hearing them owhine? about slavery.<lb /><lb />Which lasted 450 years. And its af-<lb />termath, which only started ending<lb />40 years ago, and which arguably is<lb />still with us today.<lb /><lb />You guys are too much!<lb /><lb />Go ahead. Talk about how ounrea-<lb />sonable? black folks are, and how<lb />they oinsist on living in the past.?<lb />Speculate that maybe itTs genetic.<lb /><lb />But the fact is, we ainTt fergittinT,<lb />either.<lb /><lb />Watch Where You Click<lb /><lb />A woman, doing research for a pa-<lb />per on child porn on the Internet, set<lb />her search engine to key on those<lb />words.<lb /><lb />What she got was mainly, as she<lb />intended, a number of sites dealing<lb />with treatises on the problem and<lb />hearings on porn on the Internet.<lb /><lb />She also got one site that prom-<lb />ised: oIllegal hardcore kiddie porn.<lb />Check it out.?<lb /><lb />Amazed, she clicked on it, to be<lb />confronted by a screen that said,<lb />oDownloading child pornography is<lb />illegal in every state. Your access<lb />has been logged and the information<lb />will be forwarded to the proper au-<lb />thorities.?<lb /><lb />Now, of course, she knew from her<lb />research that it wasnTt an official<lb />government site and that she wasnTt<lb /><lb />about to get a call in the middle of .<lb /><lb />the night from FBI agents wanting<lb />to confiscate her computer, but it did<lb />give her pause.<lb /><lb />Another student, researching por-<lb />nography on the Internet, reports<lb />that, a couple of days after accessing<lb />several sites, she began receiving e-<lb />mail from people she had never<lb />heard of, assuring her, oWe like that<lb /><lb />kind of stuff, too,? and wanting to<lb />send her dirty pictures.<lb /><lb />These two incidents point up a po-<lb />tential problem with the Internet<lb />that few people realize. If you access<lb />a site, it is not only possible, but<lb />fairly éasy, for a third party to trace<lb />your Internet address back to you,<lb />for whatever purposes.<lb /><lb />The problem isnTt so much that Big<lb />Brother is watching you, but that<lb />oeverybody and his brother? is.<lb /><lb />Internet security is a burgeoning<lb />issue, and one that has yet to be ad-<lb />equately addressed. It has even been<lb />speculated that it might be possible<lb />for political nuts or just plain socio-<lb />paths to use e-mail addresses to send<lb />computer viruses to everybody ac-<lb />cessing, say, an abortion-rights site<lb />or the NAACP page.<lb /><lb />African-Americans need to get<lb />used to using the Internet and all its<lb />associated technologies if they are to<lb />be ready for the 21st century.<lb /><lb />But part of learning it is knowing<lb />its pitfalls and dangers. Beware.<lb /><lb />The Internet and e-mail arenTt like<lb />the mail. They are more like a party<lb />ine.<lb /><lb />And everybody is listening.<lb /><lb />When the Krakatoa volcano erupted In Indonesia in 1683, the<lb /><lb />sound was heard 3,000 miles away.<lb /><lb />Other Viewpoints<lb /><lb />MARION BARRY: A PROFILE IN COURAGE<lb />By Maurice A. Dawkins<lb /><lb />Special To The NNPA<lb /><lb />A black Leader with a black political base, Marion Barry,<lb />the mayor of Washington, D.C., the nationTs capital, is a<lb />logical target for the attacks of the white power structure.<lb /><lb />His rise through the political system from city council-<lb />man to finance committee chairman to mayor was based on<lb />a rise through the system of community-based organizations<lb />where he served as the head of PRIDE and a leader in the<lb />Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). His<lb />progress as a leader of leaders continued as he became presi-<lb />dent of the National Black Mayors Conference.<lb /><lb />Now, he emerges as a key figure in the World Conference<lb />of Mayors and attends their conference in Abuja, Nigeria<lb />where they welcome him as a modern-day hero, a role model<lb />of what a mayor can accomplish in public administration<lb />and political power. They are 776 mayors of municipalities<lb />in Nigeria elected in March of 1997 as the first step in a<lb />three-part transition plan to change from a military to a<lb />civilian government.<lb /><lb />He appeared as a key figure at the African-African<lb />American Summit initiated by Reverend Leon Sullivan who<lb />let. the international community know his high regard and<lb />genuine appreciation for the man Marion Barry.<lb /><lb />Why then, with this track record of positive achievement<lb />and recognition from black America should he be vilified and<lb />demonized by the white media because they are trying to<lb />destabilize black Nigeria with an elaborate disinformation<lb />program? Why does the Washington Post choose to put a<lb />negative spin on the story reporting his visit to Nigeria and<lb />his visit to Harare, Zimbabwe?<lb /><lb />Is it possibly because the white power structure is deter-<lb />mined to destroy and demean authentic black American<lb />leadership ? Is it because white America fears a genuine<lb />alliance between-black Africans and African-Americans in<lb />terms of economic empowerment"combining the strategic<lb />minerals, oil, diamonds and gold of Africa with the techno-<lb />logical and organizational knowhow of Black Americans?<lb /><lb />Perhaps what was done to Marcus Garvey, W.E.B.<lb />DuBois, Paul Robeson, Adam Clayton Powell, Martin Luther<lb />King and Malcolm X must now be done to Marion Barry.<lb />How long will it take before they add Jesse Jackson to the<lb />list?<lb /><lb />It canTt be because Nigeria is a military government.<lb />Chile is a military government in good standing with the<lb />United States. It canTt be because of NigeriaTs human rights<lb />record. Communist China has a record many times worse<lb />than capitalist Nigeria. The US de-links human rights from<lb />trade and investment when it comes to China. It canTt be<lb />because Nigeria has helped stabilize Liberia and is working<lb />to restore democracy in Sierre Leone. It canTt be because<lb />Nigeria has sent peacekeeping troops to Pakistan, Lebanon,<lb />Somalia, Bosnia and every United Nations Peace Keeping<lb />operation in its history. No it must be because of racism!"<lb />Global Racism! Neocolonial Racism!<lb /><lb />There is no excuse for the odouble standard? of the U.S.<lb />State Department except the colonial offices of the British<lb />and their compatriots in the other ex-colonial powers have a<lb />conspiracy to control the wealth of the African continent and<lb />to do that they must not permit economically independent<lb />Black Nations like Nigeria and Sudan, to make economic<lb />connections with African-Americans.<lb /><lb />Yes, you get it! A Marion Barry connection might lead to<lb />connection with the 400-plus black mayors in America. This<lb />might lead to a connection with black community-based or-<lb />ganizations, black churches and the black press. No, white<lb />America cannot forgive Marion BarryTs shortcomings like<lb />they forgive Bill ClintonTs shortcomings. Marion doesnTt have<lb />the powerful damage control machinery that is at lovable,<lb />unsinkable BillTs disposal. He has the same womanizing and<lb />drug use charges made against him He has the same record<lb />of being a comeback kid and he had a lot to come back from.<lb />The difference is that though he talks like a brother, heTs not<lb /><lb />black like Barry! ,<lb />oHis PR pene say his accomplishments as president<lb /><lb />eclipse his ethical and moral shortcomings . But no one says<lb />BarryTs accomplishments eclipse his ethical or moral short-<lb />comings. Dawkins is chairman of the National Coalition<lb /><lb />For Fairness In Africa Policy, a network of black ©<lb /><lb />clergy, black press and black community-based organi-<lb />zations,<lb /><lb />BACK TO AFRICA-NOT JUST WINING AND DINING<lb />By William Reaves<lb /><lb />Special to the NNPA<lb /><lb />A recent article in the Washington Post, oOfficials Defend<lb />Conference,? initially appeared to be a rebuttal of earlier<lb />criticisms against the delegation of Black U.S. mayors, other<lb />elected officials and media representatives who attended the<lb />World Conference of MayorsT (WCM) annual meeting in Ni-<lb />geria. But it soon became clear that this was another at-<lb />tempt to vilify a group of black people who dared to define<lb />themselves and their associations.<lb /><lb />The article specifically pointed out that not only did D.C.<lb />Mayor Marion Barry attend the conference, which was<lb />olargely subsidized by NigeriaTs military government,? but<lb />two other Black mayors and three city council members from<lb />suburban D.C. municipalities, including myself, also got a<lb />free trip ohome.?<lb /><lb />The apparent intent of much of the article was to focus on<lb />how the Nigerian government duped us, the ignorant and<lb />naive sons and daughters of the African Diaspora, into a trip<lb />to the motherland in an effort to olend tacit support for the<lb />dictatorial regime.?<lb /><lb />But by hosting the WCM 1997 conference in Abuja, the<lb />Nigerian government did afford us the opportunity to rid<lb />ourselves of the ignorance and naivete many people from the<lb />U.S. have about Africa and more specifically Nigeria. Aside<lb />from the welcomed surprise of lavish resort hotels, fine res-<lb />taurants and superb African entertainment, it was indeed<lb />very clear that others have discovered Nigeria. There were<lb />many white and other non-white people, from all over the<lb />globe, vacationing, exploring and most importantly, conduct-<lb />ing business in Nigeria.<lb /><lb />However, ignorance and naivete engenders knowledge<lb />and understanding. And that is exactly what the majority of<lb />the conferenceTs nearly 500 participants from 12 African na- »<lb />tions, Asia, the Caribbean and the U.S. achieved. We got to<lb />know and understand each other.<lb /><lb />Founded in 1984 by then Tuskegee, Ala. Mayor Johnny<lb />Ford, the WCM is primarily patronized by non-white mayors ©<lb />worldwide. The WCM has the objective of stimulating con-<lb />structive relationships between mayors internationally,<lb />based on the six Ts: Trust, Trade, Tourism, Twinning of<lb />Cities, Technology Transfer and Treasury.<lb /><lb />Several very insightful exchanges took place during the<lb />scheduled workshops, which covered such topics such as:<lb />Women in Government, Mayors and the Press and Mayor/<lb />Council Relations.<lb /><lb />Technology Transfer was one of the most interesting ses-<lb />sions. The committee was composed of representatives from<lb />four African countries and the U.S. After a very informative<lb />exchange, we penned a resolution calling for the WCM to<lb />solicit from each national government represented at the<lb />conference, support for a Technology Transfer Communica-<lb />tion Network (TTCN). The network will promote information<lb />sharing between cities, towns and villages, via electronic me-<lb />dia facilitated by the respective mayors.<lb /><lb />The WCM Technology Transfer Communication Network<lb />is a novel idea that caters to the technological needs of small<lb />to medium-sized municipalities because it will provide quick<lb />turnaround on technology-related requests for information.<lb />These will presumably lead to the identification of, and con-<lb />tact with, foreign entities who can fulfill the needs of the<lb />requester, Larger or more industrialized municipalities can<lb />gain private/public investment opportunities, while smaller<lb />communities may be its economic beneficiaries. All that<lb />many villages/towns/cities need is the injection of small<lb />amounts of technology and/or capital to help develop their<lb />natural resources. r<lb /><lb />Black people in the U.S. and abroad need to be aware of<lb />business opportunities in other parts of the world. Although<lb />foreign investment is often risky, it can be very profitable<lb />and allow us to penetrate the types of markets that are<lb />generally closed domestically.<lb /><lb />After the WCM Technology Committee meeting, a mayor<lb />from a rural Nigerian village and U.S. officials calculated<lb />that for less than the average cost of an automobile in<lb />America, an investor could fund his villageTs 500-acre agri-<lb />cultural development project. Another proposal outlined a<lb />joint venture for the development of a concrete and brick<lb />plant which would supply the regionTs construction industry.<lb />One creative business plan, proposed to develop a popcorn<lb />production plant to exploit the regionTs maize and palm oil<lb />production capability. With the addition of small-scale ma-<lb />chinery the local village couldTdeliver packaged popcorn for<lb />an incredibly low cost. ,<lb /><lb />So you see; the conference was very productive, some ig-<lb />nies ealnt ah aiatea tere: reahutncd dade<lb /><lb />As for the government in Nigeria"the purpose of govern-<lb /><lb />e ments everywhere is to produce and facilitate justice.<lb /><lb />Ld<lb /><lb /></p>

The story of Christmas comes<lb />chiefly from the gospels of Saint<lb />Luke and Saint Matthew in the<lb />New Testament. According to<lb />Luke, an angel appeared to shep-<lb />herds outside the town of Bethle-<lb />hem and told them of JesusT birth.<lb />Matthew tells how the Wise Men,<lb />called Magi, followed a bright star<lb />that led them to Jesus.<lb /><lb />10. The traditional colors of<lb />Christmas are green and red.<lb />Green represents the continuance<lb />of life through winter and the<lb />Christian belief in eternal life<lb />through Christ. Red symbolizes the<lb />blood that Jesus shed at His cruci-<lb />fixion. Christmas decorations that<lb />feature these colors include the<lb />Christmas tree, the Christmas<lb />wreath, holly and mistletoe.<lb /><lb />11. The Christmas wreath, like<lb />evergreens used as Christmas<lb />trees, symbolizes the strength of<lb />life overcoming the forces of win-<lb />ter.<lb /><lb />12. The pointed holly leaves sup-<lb />posedly resemble the crown of<lb />thorns that Jesus wore when He<lb />was crucified. The red berries sym-<lb />bolize the drops of blood He shed.<lb /><lb />13. The superficial answer would<lb />be that it is a time for giving - yes,<lb />and getting - gifts. John 3:16.<lb /><lb />~ 20 His birth was in keeping with<lb />the whole tenor of His life. He<lb />worked as a carpenter, lived with-<lb />out earthly wealth or prestige,<lb />never accumulated property or dis-<lb />played any vanity by costly cloth-<lb />ing or the wearing of jewelry. At<lb />His death He was laid in a bor-<lb />rowed tomb. The kings of Egypt<lb />erected great pyramids as monu-<lb />ments to their glory and grandeur,<lb />but the Son of manchad no place to<lb />lay His head while living or His<lb />body when dead.<lb /><lb />21.
