Former NOI head the Hon. Eli-<lb />jah Muhammad once described Mosque #7 as the oheart? of the Nation of<lb />Islam while ChicagoTs Mosque #7 is the ohead.? This appointment, Farra-<lb />khan said, is designed to utilize MuhammadTs years of experience and<lb />suffering in the black liberation struggle and his relationships with a<lb />broad spectrum of leadership in religious and civic circles. Farrakhan<lb />also explained that Chavis will bring a ofresh view? to the national devel-<lb />opment of the Nation of Islam. He cited his activist roles with youth and<lb />the poor and his ability to effectively interact with diplomats in his out-<lb />reach to representatives at the United Nations headquarters in New |<lb />York. Speculations surrounding the change in leadership at the Mosque<lb />caused a vocal rift in the New York community for several months. Some<lb />have objected to the odemotion? of Min. Kevin Muhammad, the outgoing §<lb /><lb />leader of the mosque, who they believed had done much to benefit the<lb />community. Farrakhan said Min. Muhammad, will continue as minister<lb />of the Mosque in Manhattan and will assist Min. Benjamin as his East<lb /><lb />Coast regional assistant.<lb /><lb />GROUP AIMS TO EMPOWER BLACK INVESTORS<lb />The Coalition of Black Investors (CBI) is a new national organization<lb />created to address some of the economic inequities facing African Ameri-<lb />cans. CBITs leadership is comprised of African-American professions who<lb />appreciate the importance of saving, investing, and communication about<lb />money, organizers explained. oCBI was formed to address the unequal<lb />distribution of wealth, power and resources that has stagnated growth in<lb /><lb />Black communities across America,?<lb /><lb />said Duane Davis, a spokesperson<lb /><lb />for the group. oIn response, CBI is creating a Black economic network to<lb /><lb />serve the large and long-neglected population of / ican-American savers<lb />and investors. He fulfilled his dream in April<lb />1990 by forming a company posi-<lb />tioned to be a leader in commercial<lb />and residential construction. Owen<lb />has successfully developed and<lb />managed this company with<lb />unique characteristics which has<lb />made it attractive to the public,<lb />private firms, and government<lb />agencies (including federal and<lb />municipal facilities). He has cre-<lb />ated a company that is highly<lb />structured with a professional<lb />management staff and top level<lb />managers experienced in the con-<lb />struction industry. Today, Burney<lb />&amp; burney is one of the most effi-<lb />cient high value and service lead-<lb />ers in providing a complete range<lb />of general contracting and con-<lb />struction management services to<lb />private clients and public agencies.<lb />His primary goal is to provide cus-<lb />tomers with a geometric design at<lb />low-cost, but high quality. The<lb />CompanyTs motto is oQuality From<lb />Start To Finish.?<lb /><lb />In April 1979, Owen bought his<lb />first house (a basking case) and<lb />renovated it by himself by using<lb />only a hand saw. Since he never<lb />lost sight of his dream to start his<lb />own construction company, he took<lb />advantage of every opportunity of-<lb />fered him. He worked during the<lb />day and attended night classes to<lb />acquire his licenses.<lb /><lb />As a young businessman, Owen<lb />has enormous wisdom and exem-<lb />plary management skills. This is<lb />evidenced by the consistent growth<lb />of Burney &amp; burney. He is an ener-<lb />getic and dedicated leader that has<lb />never slowed down. More impor-<lb />tantly, because of his remarkable<lb />ability to plan well, make clear and<lb />sound business decisions, he main-<lb />tains an environment which en-<lb />courages employee integrity, cre-<lb />ativity and a spirit of excitement.<lb /><lb />Burney &amp; Burney is fairing well<lb />in a tough market. The company<lb />won an award in September 1997<lb />in the Greenville City Parade of<lb />Homes as an oOverall Winner? for<lb />homes in the categories of $75,000<lb /><lb />-- $100,000. He responded, oWell, the<lb />Company has been successful be-<lb />cause of a lot of hard work, dedica-<lb />tion and commitment to the cause.<lb />However, April seems to be my<lb />luck month...married in April,<lb />bought my first house in April and<lb />started my business in April.?<lb /><lb />SNAACP Leaders Battle It Out<lb /><lb />state conference presidency results,<lb />was actually inspired by Alex-<lb />ander, the former state president<lb />who was suspended in May 1996<lb />for alleged mismanagement of<lb />state conference funds.<lb /><lb />Reportedly, 10 violations to the<lb />NAACP constitution by Alston,<lb />which include questions about a<lb />delay in voting and the eligibility of<lb />some youth delegates, are alleged<lb />and cosigned by 27 delegates. Ac-<lb />cording to the NAACP constitution,<lb />25 or more are needed to validate a<lb />complaint.<lb /><lb />Alston, who served as interim<lb />and appointed state conference<lb />president for more than a year be-<lb />fore winning over 63 percent of the<lb />state convention vote in Raleigh<lb />three weeks ago, says heTs not sur-<lb />prised.<lb /><lb />oI personally asked Curtis Gate-<lb />wood and Jesse Smith right after<lb />the election, LetTs put all this be-<lb />hind us now, and letTs try to fight<lb />the real enemy,T and both of them<lb />agreed,? he told The Carolinian<lb />last Thursday.<lb /><lb />oKelly Alexander told me before<lb />the election was even over, while I<lb />was waiting, that a complaint was<lb />going to be filed. I said, Kelly, that<lb />doesnTt surprise me.,. you're just<lb />not going to accept defeat,? Alston<lb />recalled.<lb /><lb />After some of the hardest cam-<lb />paigning in state conference his-<lb />tory, the incumbent ran away with<lb />188 of 300 delegate votes, followed<lb />by SmithTs 68, GatewoodTs 41, and<lb />BelkTs 1. Belk had withdrawn that<lb />morning however, throwing his<lb />support behind Smith. Alston al-<lb />leges that was the plan to defeat<lb />him all along, but it didnTt work.<lb /><lb />oI know Kelly Alexander is be-<lb />hind it, he totally supported Jesse<lb />Smith, and the only thing Jesse<lb />Smith is trying to do is bring Cur-<lb />tis Gatewood into it in order to<lb />make it seem like it was a<lb />broadbased thing,? Alston charges.<lb /><lb />He also said the national director<lb />of branches, Mark Clack, was<lb />there, and told him any infraction<lb />he saw was overy frivolous, and<lb />would not have influenced the out-<lb />come of the election.?<lb /><lb />Whatever Clack officially de-<lb />cides, can be appealed to the<lb />NAACP national board of directors.<lb /><lb />When reached by phone in War-<lb />saw Sunday afternoon and told of<lb />AlstonTs allegation, Jesse Smith<lb />was not pleased. o<lb /><lb />oITm an independent-thinking<lb />person... ITm not driven by Kelly<lb />Alexander or Skip Alston or any-<lb />one,? Smith told The Carolinian,<lb />denying AlstonTs charge. oI think<lb />this organization is much bigger<lb /><lb />than any of us individually.<lb /><lb />oWe just asked for an investiga-<lb />tion, because there were several<lb />things that looked like they were<lb />not done fairly.?<lb /><lb />NAACP Grades Hospitality Industry<lb /><lb />NAACP president and chief ex-<lb />ecutive officer Kweisi Mfume has<lb />announced the second phase of the<lb />civil rights organizationTs plan to<lb />study how the hospitality industry<lb />treats African-Americans. African-<lb />American organizations are being<lb />urged to contact the NAACP to re-<lb />ceive a survey form to gauge the<lb />industry's cooperation. Addition-<lb />ally, a hotline has been set up to<lb />disseminate information to inter-<lb />ested parties.<lb /><lb />The organization says the hot-<lb />line is being made available to as-<lb />sist consumers and groups in mak-<lb />ing informed choices about where<lb />to spend their lodging industry dol-<lb />lars. Conventioneers, meeting<lb />planners, fraternity and sorority<lb />travel planners are urged to call<lb /><lb />i)<lb /><lb />and to respond to the survey. To<lb />date, more than 42 national organi-<lb />zations are cosponsors of the effort.<lb /><lb />The Economic Reciprocity Initia-<lb />tive was launched by the NAACP<lb />in February of this year. The hotel<lb />and lodging industry was the first<lb />target of the initiative and the top<lb />15 chains were graded and ranked<lb />on their records in five-key areas:<lb />employment, equity and franchise<lb />ownership, vendor relationships/<lb />procurement, advertising and mar-<lb />keting and philanthropy.<lb /><lb />The results of the second survey<lb />were recently revealed in a press<lb />conference in New York City. To<lb />date, only the Best Western chain<lb />has refused to cooperate,<lb /></p>

I got<lb />fired because I got sick at work,<lb />and spent a whole week in the hos-<lb />pital, then two weeks at home; by<lb />the time I got back to work and<lb />worked only two days, my em-<lb />ployer told me I wasnTt doing my<lb />job like he wanted and fired me on<lb /><lb />_the spot, and to make matters<lb /><lb />worse, it was only three weeks be-<lb />fore Thanksgiving.<lb /><lb />Since then, ITve applied to every<lb />hotel and department store for<lb />work, only to be told theyre not<lb />hiring now. <lb />Editorials<lb /><lb />Credo of the Black Press<lb /><lb />The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial<lb />and natural antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race,<lb />color or creed, full human rights. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />Second Thoughts On A<lb />Feeding Frenzy<lb /><lb />When Minister Curtis Gatewood<lb />was head of the Durham Branch of<lb />the NAACP, he created quite a stir<lb />nationally and locally with his oBoy-<lb />cott Santa Claus? campaign.<lb /><lb />Words like oScrooge? and<lb />oGrinch? flowed freely, especially<lb /><lb />- from the mainstream press, in deal-<lb /><lb />ing with his proposal.<lb /><lb />It even (predictably) won the at-<lb />tention of conservative commenta-<lb />tors like Rush Limbaugh, who used<lb />it to lambast black activism in gen-<lb />eral as mean-spirited, dour, and<lb />somehow un-American.<lb /><lb />But it would be unfair to single out<lb />those sources as the only area of<lb />criticism.<lb /><lb />This forum itself, as we recall,<lb />looked at the campaign with be-<lb />mused skepticism.<lb /><lb />While applauding its motives, we<lb />thought the good minister might<lb />have gone a bit too far in denying<lb />children the joy that comes from<lb />tearing into gifts on Christmas<lb />morning.<lb /><lb />We may not have gone that far at<lb />the time, but it seemed to us that the<lb />gifts, particularly because they are<lb />unmerited and unpaid-for, mimic the<lb />very gift that the Christ Child<lb />brought to the world, and perhaps<lb />teach them the meaning of gratitude,<lb />humility and grace.<lb /><lb />However, in driving through last<lb />weekTs incredible circus after<lb />Thanksgiving, we are beginning to<lb />have second thoughts, and to wonder<lb />if Min. Gatewood might not have<lb />been closer to the target than we<lb />originally gave him credit for.<lb /><lb />The cacophony of noises, both in-<lb />side and outside any place of retail<lb />business, was deafening.<lb /><lb />People jostled. Tempers flared.<lb />Near-misses and _ accidents<lb />abounded: There were skirmishes<lb />over the last pieces of seemingly<lb />trivial merchandise.<lb /><lb />Everywhere one looked, there<lb />were interminable lines"not just for<lb /><lb />merchandise but for ofast? food, gas<lb />and anything else people normally<lb />need on a day-to-day basis.<lb /><lb />The attitude displayed didnTt re-<lb />mind one particularly either of the<lb />Christian or Christmas spirit.<lb /><lb />It resembled nothing more than a<lb />feeding frenzy.<lb /><lb />It makes one stop and think. What<lb />exactly are we teaching our chil-<lb />dren?<lb /><lb />Many 1990s children, brought up<lb />without war or depression or any of<lb />the other things that previous gen-<lb />erations had to contend with, donTt<lb />look upon Christmas as an unmerited<lb />gift, but as a right to which they are<lb />undeniably entitled.<lb /><lb />That much was true to a certain<lb />extent in our childhood, but it has<lb />become that much more so today.<lb /><lb />The wait for Christmas largesse<lb />has become not so much a hope and<lb />prayer as an expectation, a demand.<lb /><lb />And the quest to fulfill that de-<lb />mand has turned from a joyful outing<lb />to surprise those closest to us to a<lb />grim travail, fraught with fear of not<lb />living up to their expectations.<lb /><lb />The Friday-after-Thanksgiving<lb />melee is enough to make us wonder<lb />if maybe Santa Claus isnTt really do-<lb />ing us or our children any favors.<lb /><lb />Maybe he is something we had<lb />best learn to do without, after all.<lb /><lb />If not all at once, at least we can<lb />try to start scaling back, before<lb />things spiral completely out of con-<lb />trol.<lb /><lb />We have seen a recent push to ex-<lb />pand the gift-giving portion of<lb />Kwanzaa. Already, we hear, oWhat<lb />are you giving your children for<lb />Kwanzaa??<lb /><lb />That would be a mistake. With its<lb />emphasis on ritual and simple, heart-<lb />felt gifts, Kwanzaa is one way out of<lb />the holiday trap we have caught our-<lb />selves in.<lb /><lb />After all, one Christmas feeding<lb />frenzy is more than enough. ,<lb /><lb />A Symbol Dies<lb /><lb />The news accounts were straight-<lb />forward. Coleman Young, dead at 79.<lb /><lb />Like so many aspects of his life,<lb />YoungTs death provides a milestone<lb />for black folks to pause and reflect.<lb /><lb />Young was the first black mayor of<lb />Detroit, and during his life was a<lb />symbol, whether he liked it or not,<lb />for many decades of American life.<lb /><lb />When he came to power, he was<lb />the epitome of black hope and pride.<lb />Not the first black mayor of a major<lb />city, but one of the first, and em-<lb />blematic of African-AmericansT new-<lb />found power and freedom.<lb /><lb />As his administration traveled on<lb />(some would say oground onT)<lb />through 20 years, it also became a<lb />symbol for what was to follow: urban<lb />decay, white flight, mismanagement<lb />and disillusionment.<lb /><lb />All the issues that plagued cities in<lb />the T90s, including charges of bureau-<lb />cratic arrogance, misplaced priorities<lb />and resegregation, found a symbol in<lb />Young and his Detroit.<lb /><lb />Under his administration, whites<lb />flocked to the suburbs, taking their<lb />tax base with them. Schools<lb />crumbled, jobs dwindled, and roads<lb /><lb />and other infrastructure began to<lb />crumble.<lb /><lb />Crime soared, and even many<lb />blacks joked that YoungTs Detroit<lb />was a place that nobody would vol-<lb />untarily go.<lb /><lb />Whether and to what extent<lb />Young was responsible for these<lb />changes, or simply oversaw them<lb />and took the fall, is immaterial.<lb /><lb />He and his administration became<lb />symbolic of them and a wide array of<lb />other ills plaguing modern cities go-<lb />ing into the turn of the century.<lb /><lb />Widely criticized by both liberals<lb />and conservatives alike, Young was,<lb />nevertheless, reelected by wide mar-<lb />gins as late as 1989.<lb /><lb />Then, worn down by criticism and<lb />charges of personal corruption,<lb />Young became one of a series of<lb />high-profile public.officials to give it<lb />up and retreat into retirement.<lb /><lb />This, too, the media and the nation<lb />took as symbolic.<lb /><lb />On Coleman Young rested many of<lb />the hopes and expectations of his<lb />people, and later, their fears and em-<lb />barrassment.<lb /><lb />Coleman Young. The<lb />oAmistad.? Hannibal. The NAACP. Some of us know who or<lb />what these people, events or organizations are. For others,<lb />however, they are just names that we may see from time to<lb />time, if we see them at all.<lb /><lb />Okay, if youTre not sure who or what I am talking about,<lb />look it up. The title here is oForgotten History?, not oHistory<lb />Lesson?. The reason I am bringing this topic up? The movie<lb />oAmistad? is about to be released in theaters everywhere,<lb />and how many of our children, and adults, have no clue as to<lb />what it was? I have heard many young adults and teens<lb />spout off about being dumped on for being Black, and they<lb />can cite many a time when they have been hurt by racism,<lb />which I agree is still alive and well. However, what happens<lb />to those stories of brave people who fought for freedom by<lb />virtue of being Black? What I mean is, there have been so<lb />many points in history where being Blcak was a sign of<lb />pride. We often forget that , and allow our children to forget<lb />it. The groups and people mentioned above were the same as<lb />all of us. They had hopes, dreams, ups and downs. They<lb />were discriminated against for being what and who God<lb />made them. But they did better than survive. They lived!<lb /><lb />I look at myself and wondr how oforgetting? has hurt me.<lb />We're in a fast-paced world where people put things in a<lb />planner. We often forget to plan for time to revisit ourselves.<lb />In each of our families, there have been strong men and<lb />women; otherwise, we wouldnTt have survived at all. NOt<lb />knowing either my family or cultural history has often given<lb />me a sense of loss. How can I know ome?? if I have oforgotten?<lb />what has made me?<lb /><lb />My wife and I are considering having children someday.<lb />We are looking closely at environments that we feel would be<lb />conducive to raising a child, or children. We look at what<lb />areas celebrate things like Juneteenth, whether Black his-<lb />tory is only something that occurs in February, are there<lb />successful Blacks in the area, and how well do the people (in<lb />general) seem to know their history? Are they caught in that<lb />mentality of oITm Black so I canTt do...??<lb /><lb />When you forget history, you forget how to survive and<lb />the strength that is inherent in all of us. You remember that<lb />slavery happened, but forget that, at the turn of the century<lb />there was the Harlem Renaissance. Part of remembering,<lb />the good and the bad, is to learn. For parents, I wonder what<lb />have their children learned from them? Do their children<lb />know about the grandmother who worked two jobs and kept<lb />a roof over everyoneTs had? Or the grandfather who worked<lb />the railroad, and the love the family had for him when he<lb />came home? Do yur children understand the survival tech-<lb />niques that have been passed down in their genes?<lb /><lb />Okay, I know I have no children. But, as a child whose<lb />parents had oforgotten? themselves and didnTt pass on their<lb />history, I know the damage that can occur. I missed out on<lb />the strengths I had. I didnTt know the sternghts that my<lb />grandparents and great grandparents had until I spoke with<lb />other family members. I needed that connection to my for-<lb />gotten ancestors to be given the strength of my personal<lb />history. I want my children to know that not only is there a<lb />Michael Jordan, and that there was a Charles Drew and a<lb />mutiny on the oAmistad,? but also that they have strengths<lb />from within. The history is integral to us. The loss of it keeps<lb />us in a mental slavery.<lb /><lb />Question: What was the first thing slave traders and<lb />masters did to their slaves?<lb /><lb />Answer: Took away their history and roots. Made them<lb />forget. When your children can see every Spike Lee movie,<lb />but not know tha the ShakespeareTs character Othello was<lb />Black, and that the oAmistad? happened, and that Granddad<lb />was a loving man, then you are depriving them of their his-<lb />tory. You are preparing them for the slavery that has been<lb />fough against for centuries (you didnTt think it began just<lb />before the Civil War did you?).<lb /><lb />Just think about it, The best gift your kids can get is the<lb />knowledge of themselves. The knowledge that they are<lb />strong, and that they have roots. Just think about it. Forgot-<lb />ten Black history, forgotten self-history, is detrimental to<lb />oneTs self. You canTt move on until you have an idea of where<lb />you have been and what you CAN do.<lb /><lb />A TALE OF TWO FAMILIES<lb /><lb />By Earl Ofari Hutchinson<lb /><lb />Special To The NNPA<lb /><lb />If Jacqueline and Linden Thompson are perplexed over<lb />the massive national media attention and public outpouring<lb />of support for Bobbi and Ken McCaughey, the parents of the<lb />Iowa septuplets, it is understandable. In May, the Washing-<lb />ton, D.C. couple set the record for the longest sextuplet preg-<lb />nancy at 29 weeks and six days in the United States. They<lb />also were the first: African-American couple to give birth to<lb />sextuplets. Yet unlike the McCaugheyTs media-dubbed<lb />omiracle birth,? the birth of their children stirred no interest<lb />in the media at first. There were no TV news features, spe-<lb />cial reports, or a story on them in any major newspaper. If<lb />not for a brief news blurb on the Thompson births in the<lb />Black weekly, Jet magazine, the event would have gone com-<lb />pletely unnoticed.<lb /><lb />ItTs not hard to figure out why. Unlike the McCaugheys,<lb />the Thompsons are a low-income, working-class African-<lb />American couple. They do not live in a small, tight-knit, mid-<lb />American Iowa community. They did not use a fertility drug.<lb />As a result, the Thompsons did not get the following treat-<lb />ment:<lb /><lb />¢Free advertising in major newspapers for their family<lb />assistance fund.<lb /><lb />¢The donation of a 12-seat Chevrolet van<lb /><lb />eThe offer by IowaTs governor to build a new, and larger<lb />home.<lb /><lb />eA yearTs supply of groceries from a national supermar-<lb />ket chain.<lb /><lb />eA yearTs supply of baby care products.<lb /><lb />°A lifetime supply of diapers.<lb /><lb />¢*A phone call from President Clinton congratulating<lb />them on their oamazing adventure.?<lb /><lb />A special invitation to the White House.<lb /><lb />eA bid of $250,000 from a tabloid weekly to tell their<lb />story and<lb /><lb />¢ Countless offers from their friends, and neighbors to<lb />assist with the children.<lb /><lb />The ThompsonsT story only became the subject of mild<lb />passing interest when the McCaughey septuplets made news<lb />and a caller to the nationally syndicated oTom Joyner Morn-<lb />ing Show? complained about the lack of help the couple had<lb />received.<lb /><lb />A Washington, D.C. community group, Sisters in Touch,<lb />has made the ThompsonsT plight an issue. The Washington<lb />Post did a back-pages story on them. But even then this was<lb />not enough to spark the kind of national offers of help that<lb />flooded into the McCaugheys.<lb /><lb />A Procter &amp; Gamble spokesperson hinted that the com-<lb />pany would consider a six to eight month supply of diapers<lb />but added that this was the standard contribution for fami-<lb />lies with multiple births. A spokesperson for Johnson &amp;<lb />Johnson suggested that the Thompsons contact the company<lb />to determine if there are othings we can do.?<lb /><lb />With the assistance of the D.C. Housing Finance Agency,<lb />the Thompsons were able to move out of their cramped, one-<lb />bedroom duplex unit into a three-bedroom apartment. Since<lb />then they have managed to find a six bedroom house but<lb />they have not been able to move in. Even with Linden<lb />ThompsonTs salary from two jobs, they canTt afford the<lb />$1,500 rent.<lb /><lb />However, at press time, the Virginia-based Freddie Mac<lb />Foundation, which gives grants to organizations that sup-<lb />port childrenTs issues and children at risk, has made a com-<lb />mitment to give the family a house from their inventory. The<lb />impetus for the foundationTs involvement came from staff<lb />members who heard/read reports of the ThompsonTs situa-<lb />tion and recommended involvement, said Shawn Flaherty,<lb />spokesperson for Freddie Mac. The foundation has scheduled<lb />a Dec, 1 meeting with the family to access their needs.<lb /><lb />Additionally, as a result of the appeal letters on their<lb />behalf by Sisters in Touch and the increased media coverage,<lb />the Thompsons are now receiving free day care at a local<lb />child care center, and they were notified that they will be<lb />eligible to enroll their children in the Head Start Program.<lb />Calls and offers of donations are coming from all over the<lb />U.S. and Canada.<lb /><lb />While the Thompsons have been forced to shoulder much<lb />of the tremendous physical and emotional strain and finan-<lb />cial burden of caring for five children (one of them died at<lb />birth) alone, they have expressed pleasure at the showering<lb />of support for the McCaugheys and for the way in which the<lb />African-American community has now responded to them.<lb /><lb /></p>

We<lb />should favor companies that sup-<lb />port our media, but with total ad-<lb />vertising in black media just top-<lb />ping $1 billion for the first time, it<lb />is pretty clear that we are not.<lb /><lb />In addition, we give pretty<lb />shoddy lip service to our Kwanzaa<lb />vows about collective work and re-<lb /><lb />The economy is headed for a sig-<lb />nificant downturn in 1998, which is<lb />being first felt in African-American<lb />communities. The political climate<lb />will make it very tough for indi-<lb />vidual black employees in the next<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Second, be an informed and con-<lb />scious consumer. Do not buy prod-<lb />ucts from companies that have<lb /><lb />rican Purchasing Power Soars<lb /><lb />or companies that support repres-<lb />sive foreign governments or compa-<lb />nies that refuse to build factories<lb />in Black communities. DonTt be<lb />afraid to ask the question or assign<lb /><lb />your youth to find out.<lb /><lb />Third, give financial instruments<lb />for gifts instead of disposable items<lb />like toys.
