So you<lb />know what that means.<lb /><lb />Time for a war.<lb /><lb />Not a big, costly, messy one, mind<lb />you. The American public is defi-<lb />nitely not in for that kind of war.<lb /><lb />No, weTre talking about a clean,<lb />easy, neat little war with American<lb />casualties in the double digits<lb />(single, if possible) and a simple, eas-<lb />ily understood goal.<lb /><lb />Actually, that second stipulation is<lb />more of a guideline than a rule. The<lb />important thing is, we must win.<lb />And win big.<lb /><lb />That has been the guiding prin-<lb />ciple for the last three presidents.<lb />Reagan went to Grenada. Bush went<lb />to Panama and, when that popularity<lb />didnTt stick, masterminded Desert<lb />Storm.<lb /><lb />The formula is simple. If you are<lb />having trouble, being made fun of, or<lb />sued for something distasteful, pick a<lb />fight with someone you are abso-<lb />lutely sure you can beat handily.<lb /><lb />Clinton tried it himself earlier on.<lb />He was all set to invade Haiti, but<lb />that pest Jimmy Carter pulled the<lb />rug out from under him at the last<lb />second by negotiating a deal for<lb />HaitiTs leaders to leave voluntarily.<lb /><lb />Made Bill look kind of silly. I<lb />contacted him and we had a fine con-<lb />versation. He informed me he was a<lb />prophet and said that my writings<lb />blessed him greatly. He shared some<lb />insights and gave me some much<lb />needed advice, encouragement and<lb />reinforcement. For this I am truly<lb />grateful. It was a case of being re-<lb />warded by giving. Writing is my gift.<lb />I donTt take credit for it. It is part<lb />and parcel of who I am and why I am<lb />here. In that regard I am on purpose.<lb /><lb />Even though I write about per-<lb />sonal growth and development there<lb />are areas in my own life that need<lb />maturation. Within the last few<lb /><lb />weeks several people have been sent<lb />into my life to offer support and en-<lb />couragement. I thank Olive Vassell<lb />and Prophet Irving for their insights<lb />and suggestions. This is what we<lb />need more of in our community, mu-<lb />tual support, nurturing and encour-<lb />agement. We need hope. Phyllis<lb />Yvonne Stickney says HOPE stands<lb />for Helping Our People Elevate or<lb />Evolve. Have you given anyone hope<lb />today? Are you an encourager or are<lb />you a nay sayer, a cynic or a scoffer?<lb />Look at our community, observe the<lb />sadness/despair in the eyes and on<lb />the faces of our people. Have you<lb />provided any hope or inspiration to<lb />show them things arenTt always what<lb />they seem? Do you promote the idea<lb />that tomorrow can/will be a better<lb />day? Are you keeping hope alive by<lb />your words and deeds?<lb /><lb />You have gifts and talents. Are<lb />you using them to make the world a<lb />better place? What new thing(s) will you<lb />discover, invent or produce that will<lb />enhance the quality of life? All of us<lb />have been given some talent. True,<lb />far too many of us go to our graves<lb />with our genius untapped, our great-<lb />ness undemonstrated or channeled in<lb />the wrong direction. That happens<lb />because we fail to heed the good ad-<lb />vice we are given. We ignore our<lb />dreams, our intuition or the outer<lb /><lb />messages and sign posts God provide -<lb /><lb />to show us the way. That happens<lb />when we lack faith in the universe to<lb />supply our needs and use us in the<lb />divine plan for the good of all of us.<lb />You have something marvelous and<lb />wondrous to give. Everyone had to try it at least once. It was the<lb />oin? thing to do. So, yes, I tried it a few times, until I discov-<lb />ered that it was a lot easier for me to actually study than to<lb />expend all that energy coming up with plots and counter-<lb />plots for cheating. (For those of you who've never done it,<lb />you'd be AMAZED how much energy cheating can take up!)<lb /><lb />I'd like to think that students today just havenTt learned<lb />that lesson yet. But then, ITm not an idiot. The truth is that,<lb />no mater how many good parents are out there trying to<lb />instill values in their children, some kids are plain lazy.<lb /><lb />Note that ITm saying osome? kids are lazy. ITm very much<lb />aware of why kids cheat. Some do it because they canTt read,<lb />and theyTre afraid to let anyone know. Others do it because<lb />of the risk, and others still simply because they just donTt<lb />know the answers. And, of course, there are those who cheat<lb />only because itTs the only way theyTve ever gotten good<lb />grades.<lb /><lb />And then, naturally, there are the lazy ones.<lb /><lb />As I write this, ITm still fuming over what happened at<lb />school today. I had assigned an essay to all five of my<lb />classes. The were to write a one and a half page essay on an<lb />aspéct of Earth Science they've been studying. I let them use<lb />their books, and their notes, and whatever other resources<lb />they could find to help them with the assignment. In addi-<lb />tion, I took them through an explanation of HOW to write an<lb />essay, on'the assumption that there would be some kids who<lb />had never written an essay (I was right about that, you<lb />know.)<lb /><lb />So, imagine my surprise when, as ITm proofreading the<lb />rough drafts of the essays, I discover that at least SEVEN-<lb />TEEN kids copied out the textbook, word for word.<lb /><lb />Now, ITm not saying that kids are stupid. I know better,<lb />given the ingenuity some of them displayed in cheating.<lb />They actually raided the classrooms bookshelves for older<lb />editions of the text, and texts by other publishers, in order to<lb />copy from sources they though I would not be familiar with.<lb />But then, I only graduated high school nine years ago, when<lb />cheating was still an art form, and not just an act of despera-<lb />tion. Besides that, ITve got a nasty, inventive mind myself.<lb />So it seemed only natural to me for me to go through ALL of<lb />the other Earth Science books in the classroom, familiarizing<lb />myself with the chapters that are similar to what we've been<lb />focusing on. Can I help it if I just happen to be able to read<lb />at a rate so that I could read all those chapters in all those<lb />books just before I assigned the essay? And, can I help it if I<lb />just happened to have all those books handy as I was proof-<lb />reading the essays to give them pointers on how to improve<lb />them prior to their being turned in?<lb /><lb />But then, as one student told me, oMr. Bankhead, you're<lb />not supposed to be so smart.? Okay. ITm sorry. I thought that<lb />was a teacherTs job. Certainly ITve never found it in the job<lb />description, but it seems to come down to a battle of wits<lb />with the kids anyway, so why shouldnTt I play it sly and<lb />sneaky too? Especially when it means that I'll catch the kids<lb />in the act ?<lb /><lb />oBecause you're a teacher,? I can hear some of you parent<lb />saying.<lb /><lb />Get real.<lb /><lb />Look, bottom line? Some of the kids I have to deal with<lb />are lazy. Period. They come to class, donTt do their own work,<lb />try to sleep in class, try to distract other kids from concen-<lb />trating, then have the nerve to come to me with a hurt and<lb />confused look when they fail. oMr. Bankhead, why'd you<lb />flunk me?? they'll say, with tear-filled eyes and a trembling<lb />voice,<lb /><lb />Gee, THAT oneTs a no-brainer. Maybe itTs because you<lb />stole someone elseTs paper and put your name at the top? Or<lb />maybe it was the time you hid your book in your desk and<lb />were peeking at it during the test? Or, perhaps it was you<lb />and your friend passing notes back and forth during the test,<lb />and whispering in tones that my deaf cat could hear?<lb /><lb />oBut, Mr. Bankhead, I wasnTt cheating!?<lb /><lb />Okay, then you tell ME what you would call it when<lb />someone hides a piece of paper in their sleeve that they slip<lb />under their test, moving the test aside from time to time to<lb /><lb />look at the information that just ohappens? to be on the test "<lb />_ they're<lb /><lb />taking?<lb />oI donTt know, Mr. Bankhead. Forgetfulness?? .<lb /><lb />aoe ececcccce<lb /><lb />test every time I waled by?<lb /><lb />oNo, Mr. Bankhead! I was just straightening up the test!?<lb /><lb />What is amazing to me is not the fact that these kids<lb />have developed a poker face any gamberler (or professional<lb />politician) would kill for, but they htey really have me won-<lb />dering if they even kow WHY what theyTre doing is wrong?<lb /><lb />I confronted three of them today. One said oMr<lb />Bankhead, it doesnTt matter!? Another said obut I did the<lb />assignment, whatTs the problem??<lb /><lb />The best answer I got all day was oYou're just accusing<lb />me because you hate me.? THAT one both amused and an-<lb />gered me. Anger because how DARE this kid say that when<lb />ITve been bending over backwards trying to help him by of-<lb />fering him access to tutors, extra credit assignments, and so<lb />forth? Amusement because...well, just because. Sure, ITm the<lb />mean, cruel, sadistic teacher who hates his students and is<lb />smarter than I should be. THATTs not in the job description<lb />either. Maybe it should be? Because sometimes, I am SO<lb />tempted to lie down to the expectationa.......<lb /><lb />Then again, maybe the job description for ostudent?<lb />should be oone who studies and tries hard in school?, as<lb />opposed to the oone who comes to school? definition we seem<lb />to have now. ThatTs why I donTt call the young adults who<lb />come into my class ostudents.? Some are what I call ostu-<lb />dents.? the rest are just okids.?<lb /><lb />THE GOP ELEPHANT BLINKS...<lb />By George Wilson<lb /><lb />A Voice From the Hill<lb /><lb />When the words oaffirmative action? are muttered on<lb />Capitol Hill the result is a bitter partisan battle. On one side<lb />there are some Democrats who like to portray themselves as<lb />the guardians of equality and fairness. These are lofty ideals<lb />even if they donTt accurately capture their true feelings.<lb />Most Republicans say that they are opposed to affirmative<lb />action because it promotes quotas and preferential treat-<lb />ment.<lb /><lb />With both sides locked into their positions, the House of<lb />Representative began consideration of a bill that would per-<lb />manently affect equality for those seeking an even playing<lb />field.<lb /><lb />Congressman Charles Cannady (R-Fla.) introduced a bill<lb />sarcastically named oThe Civil Rights Act of 1997.? The in-<lb />tention of the legislation was to permanently abolish affir-<lb />mative action in all federal programs. CannadyTs proposed<lb />legislation had been languishing in the House Judiciary.<lb />Committee, because the House Republican leadership knew<lb />what the reaction would be from those in support of affirma-<lb />tive action and in this case they were oon the money.?<lb /><lb />The Congressional Black Caucus joined hands with the<lb />Hispanic Caucus and a coalition of civil rights organization<lb />to alert their constituents to oprepare for battle over the<lb />Cannady Bill.? However, Wade Henderson, executive direc-<lb />tor of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights agreed that<lb />Republicans had the numbers to get the ill-conceived bill out<lb />of the Judiciary Committee. oIt appears that they have the<lb />votes. However, we want to make the political cost high for<lb />support of the Bill,? said. Henderson and the coalition op-<lb />posed the Bill, have their hands on the political pulse of the<lb />nation and identified those moderate republicans who repre-<lb />sent districts that have fairly large groups of women,<lb />Hispanics, Asians and African Americans. The intent was to<lb />put political pressure on GOP members and make sure they<lb />had a difficult time explaining their vote when they returned<lb />to their home districts.<lb /><lb />With the stage then set for a real political battle over<lb />affirmative action, the House decided to set a vote on the<lb />controversial issue. Members of the CBC were in place and<lb />the heads of the nationTs major civil rights organizations<lb />were joined in the hearing room by scores of supporters,<lb />indicating that the sometime slumbering civil rights estab-<lb />lishment had come alive.<lb /><lb />I donTt know if it was the sight of this packed hearing<lb />room or pre-election year common sense, but when the omo-<lb />ment of truth? arrived the Republicans decided to table the<lb />Cannady Bill. After all of the blustering and posturing the<lb />Republicans accepted the fact that pursuing the abolition of<lb />affirmative action would be a political opoison pill.?<lb /><lb />By tabling the bill it simply means that the legislation<lb />can be brought back at any time for consideration. However,<lb />the chances are slim that the Republicans will want to push<lb />an issue like affirmative action anytime soon with major<lb />electiona scheduled for 1998.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />_ JHEALTH<lb /><lb />Anxiety Disorders Are<lb /><lb />Treatable"tt Recognized }#?4<lb /><lb />(NAPS)"Phrases such as<lb />ostressed-out? and oout of control?<lb />are familiar expressions in todayTs<lb />fast-paced world, but many people<lb />experiencing these feelings may<lb />be suffering from far more than<lb />onormal? stress. They may be suf-<lb />fering-from anxiety disorders,<lb />common and debilitating illnesses<lb />marked by excessive worrying,<lb />episodes of panic, obsessive<lb />thoughts and irrational fears.<lb />These symptoms often can be<lb />otriggered? by overwhelming life<lb />experiences or they can occur for<lb />seemingly no apparent reason.<lb /><lb />Not knowing where to get help is<lb />a big problem, and many people suf-<lb />fering from anxiety disorders are<lb />not getting a correct diagnosis and<lb />proper medical attention. In fact,<lb />anxiety disorders are a key cause of<lb />multiple visits to primary care<lb />physicians. Anxiety disorders com-<lb />monly co-occur with depression.<lb /><lb />According to Steven E. Hyman,<lb />M.D., Director of the National<lb />Institute of Mental Health, anxi-<lb />ety disorders, like other mental<lb />illnesses, reflect dysfunction in<lb />the brain. Millions of people with<lb />anxiety disorders are benefitting<lb />from brain research on these real<lb />and treatable disorders. Effective<lb />treatments for anxiety disorders<lb />include medication, specific forms<lb />of psychotherapy called cognitive-<lb />behavior and behavior therapy, or<lb />a combination.<lb /><lb />Here are some brief descrip-<lb />tions of the five anxiety disorders:<lb /><lb />* Panic Disorder"Sudden<lb />feelings of terror that strike<lb />repeatedly and without warning.<lb />Symptoms include chest pain,<lb />heart palpitations, shortness of<lb />breath, dizziness, abdominal dis-<lb />comfo:., feelings of unreality, and<lb />fear of dying.<lb /><lb />* Phobias"Extreme, dis-<lb />abling and irrational fear of some-<lb />thing that poses little or no actual<lb />danger and that can cause people<lb />to limit their lives.<lb /><lb />* Generalized Anxiety Dis-<lb />order"Persistent, exaggerated<lb />worry about everyday life events<lb />and routine activities (good or<lb />bad). lasting at least six months;<lb />accompanied by physical symp-<lb />toms such as fatigue, trembling,<lb />muscle tension and headache, or<lb />nausea.<lb /><lb />* Obsessive Compulsive Dis-<lb />order"Repeated, intrusive and<lb /><lb />Seeing Your<lb />Way Clear To<lb />Kye Health<lb /><lb />(NAPS)"The first step in main-<lb />taining good eye health is having<lb />regular eye exams. Most diseases<lb />can be treated and/or prevented if<lb />detected early.<lb /><lb />Start by examining infantsT<lb />vision at six months. After that<lb />examine children at three years,<lb />before they enter first grade, and<lb />every two years thereafter.<lb /><lb />Adults, 19 to 40 should be seen<lb />every two to three years. From 41<lb />to 60, visit your eye doctor every<lb />two years, and after age 61, every<lb />year.<lb /><lb />oMany people donTt realize that<lb />professional eye exams are as<lb />important to your optimal health<lb />and well-being as general and den-<lb />tal check-ups,? said Jacques Stoerr,<lb />president of Essilor of America<lb />(EQOA), a leading manufacturer of<lb />optical lenses.<lb /><lb />To encourage people to take<lb />care of their eyes, EOA offers a free<lb />brochure, See More Of Life.<lb /><lb />The colorful brochure walks<lb />readers through a complete visit to<lb />an eyecare professional"from the<lb />eye exam to choosing corrective<lb />lenses. The brochure also educates<lb />eyeglass wearers about the options<lb />available in lenses and lens treat-<lb />ments and explains the features<lb />and benefits of each.<lb /><lb />oToday there are many lens<lb />choices and it is essential to dis-<lb />cuss the options with your eyecare<lb />professional and make an in-<lb />formed decision to find the lens<lb />package that best suits your needs<lb />and lifestyle,? noted Dr. Rod<lb />Tahran, vice-president of profes-<lb />sional relations and clinical<lb />affairs at EOA.<lb /><lb />The brochure also contains an<lb />easy-to-use self-test that individu-<lb />als can take to indicate whether or<lb />not. they may have presbyopia. A<lb />result of the aging process, presby-<lb />opia is the eyeTs inability to focus<lb />on close objects.<lb /><lb />The condition affects virtually<lb />everyone after the age of fifty, but<lb />many people notice symptoms as<lb />early as their late 30s/early 40s.<lb /><lb />If you suspect your eyes are<lb />changing, it is important to get an<lb />eye examination. soe sa lenses<lb />your eyecare profess can pre-<lb />scribe to correct your vision, -<lb /><lb />unwanted thoughts or rituals that<lb />seem impossible to control.<lb /><lb />¢ Post Traumatic Stress<lb />Disorder"Persistent symptoms<lb />resulting from a traumatic life<lb />experience. Symptoms include<lb />nightmares, flashbacks, numbing<lb />of emotions, depression and feel-<lb />ing angry, irritable, distracted or<lb />jumpy. .<lb /><lb />oNearly 24 million Americans<lb />suffer from an anxiety disorder<lb />each year, yet many people handle<lb />this condition in silence and with<lb />secrecy, unnecessarily ashamed or<lb />unaware that their symptoms are<lb />both abnormal and treatable,?<lb />notes Jerilyn Ross, President of the<lb />Anxiety Disorders Association of<lb />America (ADAA). oBy contacting<lb />organizations like ADAA,? she sug-<lb />gests, opeople can get important<lb />information and guidance concern-<lb />ing diagnosis and treatments.?<lb /><lb />If you or someone you know is<lb />experiencing any of the symptoms<lb />above, help is available. ItTs about a<lb />future world of omade to order?<lb />people created through genetic<lb />research. Enjoy the movie, but<lb />donTt let it scare you. The real<lb />promise of genetic research is not<lb />in creating people but in finding<lb />better medicines for people. And<lb />thatTs not scary at all.<lb /><lb />Our bodies are made up of cells.<lb />Inside each cell are coiled up<lb />strands of a substance called DNA.<lb />The strands are made up of genes,<lb />which trigger the production of<lb />proteins that make us what we are.<lb />If you have brown eyes, for exam-<lb />ple, itTs because your genes contain<lb />a code that triggers the production<lb />of brown eyes.<lb /><lb />Genes also give scientists clues<lb />to the underlying causes of many<lb />diseases. ThatTs why genetic<lb />research is so important. Once sci-<lb />entists find the genes that cause<lb />disease, or cause a person to be<lb />susceptible to a certain disease,<lb />pharmaceutical companies can<lb />design better drugs to treat, cure or<lb />even prevent the disease.<lb /><lb />Genetic research is already pay-<lb />ing off for patients. Protease<lb />inhibitors, which are helping AIDS<lb />patients live longer, better lives,<lb />were discovered through genetic<lb />research. Genetic research also led<lb /><lb />Nuclear Medicine<lb />Diagnosing Hip &amp;<lb />Pelvis Injury<lb /><lb />(NAPS)"Diagnosing injury to<lb />the musculo-skeletal system can be<lb />tricky, and X-rays may not provide<lb />sufficient means to do so. Happily,<lb />advances in nuclear medioine<lb />detection systems appearing on the<lb />horizon offer optimism.<lb /><lb />ItTs not uncommon for elderly<lb />patients to complain of hip and<lb />pelvis pain, for which X-rays can-<lb />not detect a cause. Three-phase<lb />radionuclide bone (TPB) imaging,<lb />a type of nuclear-based medicine,<lb />is proving a practical clinical tool<lb />in the analysis of injuries to the<lb />hip and pelvis in the elderly, as<lb />well as in sports-related injuries.<lb />This device provides significant<lb />early diagnostics information<lb />about bone stress fractures.<lb /><lb />In a recent study reported in the<lb />medical journal, Radiology, TPB<lb />imaging was used because stan-<lb />dard X-ray methods were unable to<lb />make a conclusive diagnosis in hip<lb />and pelvis pain cases. And the most<lb />important things discovered in the<lb />study were:<lb /><lb />1, TPB imaging is a highly sen-<lb />sitive and reliable way to detect<lb />bone stress fractures in most cases<lb />where X-rays remain normal.<lb /><lb />2. No significant differences<lb />between the types of fractures<lb /><lb />were found when men were com. °<lb /><lb />pared with women patients,<lb /><lb />3. Characteristic TPB imaging<lb />patterns of stress fractures and<lb />shin splints are more easily and<lb />confidently identified.<lb /><lb />So ask your doctor about TPB<lb />imaging if your bone pain has had<lb />no certain diagnosis and persists<lb />beyond two weeks.<lb /><lb />Shriners Hospitals"Playing An Important<lb />Role Into The Next Century<lb /><lb />aad<lb /><lb />FA °<lb />sit<lb /><lb />wer<lb /><lb />?,? Testing for this gene can<lb />help people who have it plan to<lb />have regular examinations to catch<lb />this cancer before it becomes<lb />deadly.<lb /><lb />And genetic research offers<lb />even greater hope for the future.<lb />For example, scientists recently<lb />discovered the defective gene that<lb />causes most cases of glaucoma.<lb />This eye disease is the nurnber one<lb />cause of blindness in African<lb />Americans. Blindness from glau-<lb />coma is 5 times more likely to<lb />happen to African Americans than<lb />to white Americans. This fact<lb />makes the discovery of the glau-<lb />coma gene particularly good news<lb />for African Americans because this<lb />knowledge may help pharmaceuti-<lb />cal company researchers design<lb />better drugs to treat"or even to<lb />prevent"glaucoma.<lb /><lb />to clot-buster drugs-""-which save<lb />the lives of heart attack victims and<lb />help stroke patients avoid the worst<lb />after-effects of stroke. People on<lb />kidney dialysis get their energy<lb />back through an anemia medicine<lb /><lb />]<lb />discovered " through<lb /><lb />research. And, thanks to this<lb />research, diabetics now have a new<lb />kind of insulin that gives them a<lb />better quality of life.<lb /><lb />genetic Genetic research may also lead<lb />to better treatments for<lb />AlzheimerTs disease, a cure for<lb />ParkinsonTs disease, more effective<lb />treatments for cancer, and many<lb />Genetic research has produced other breakthroughs.<lb />tests that can help people catch dis-<lb />ease at an earlier, more treatable<lb />stage.
