<lb />THE MONSTER<lb /><lb />Have you a monster in your life?<lb />In your home? In your neighbor-<lb />hood? In our city? Is the monster in<lb />your head, constantly telling you,<lb />oI canTt, you canTt, you canTt? Mon-<lb />sters come in any form - friends,<lb />family, cohorts, colleagues. Tal-<lb />ented, educated, ignorant, young<lb />or old; he is an equal-opportunity<lb />demon. He comes in most crippling<lb />forms: Insecurity, self-hatred, self-<lb />doubt. So many of us have<lb />struggled with our self-value: The<lb />young man or woman pursuing a<lb />diploma or a degree, a job promo-<lb />tion, maintaining good grades, go-<lb />ing to the head of the class, strug-<lb />gling to overcome bad habits, not<lb />knowing if people like you for your-<lb />self or because of who your father<lb />is or was, and people telling you,<lb />oyou'll never amount to anything,<lb />or you're never going to make it?.<lb /><lb />The monster can be scary but<lb />donTt give it power; instead, look<lb />right into your fears, talk to your-<lb />self, donTt listen to negative people<lb />and negative thoughts, for you can<lb />do anything you believe you can.<lb /><lb />Read and listen to Harriet<lb />Tubman, Colin Powell, Maya An-<lb />gelou, Mary McLeod Bethune, your<lb />parent, your grand parent, among<lb />many others. These didnTt let mon-<lb />sters seduce or destroy their<lb />dreams. Immobilize, paralyze and<lb />neutralize them into success. Only<lb />you can turn your monster into re-<lb />alities, causing your dreams to<lb />come true.<lb /><lb />LIVE LONGER<lb /><lb />To help you live longer, health-<lb />ily, the United States Department<lb />of Agriculture and Health and Hu-<lb />man Services has some dietary<lb />suggestions that, if followed, could<lb />help you live healthily. Their sug-<lb />gestions are:<lb /><lb />1. Eat a variety of foods (includ-<lb /><lb />Mrs. Beatrice Maye<lb /><lb />ing all those from the seven basic<lb />food groups).<lb /><lb />2. Maintain weight.<lb /><lb />3. Avoid too much fat from ani-<lb />mal sources, saturated fat and cho-<lb />lesterol (thereby practically elimi-<lb />nating fried foods from your diet).<lb /><lb />4. Eat foods with adequate<lb />starch and fiber. Doctors say that a<lb />daily diet of high fiber could reduce<lb />your risk of colon and rectal cancer,<lb />the second leading cause of cancer<lb />deaths.<lb /><lb />5. Avoid too much sugar.<lb /><lb />6. Avoid too much sodium. Salt<lb />reduction is necessary to control<lb />hypertension, but most Americans,<lb />nutritionists say, consume up to<lb />three times more than the recom-<lb />mended 2000 milligrams a day.<lb /><lb />7. If you drink alcohol, do so in<lb />moderation (no more than two<lb />drinks a day).<lb /><lb />And letTs not forget exercise or<lb />physical activities, such as aero-<lb />bics, jogging, calisthenics, tennis,<lb />and walking. <lb />Credo of the Black Press<lb /><lb />The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial<lb />and natural antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race,<lb />color or creed, full human rights. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />Looking The Other Way<lb /><lb />Black people, at least some of<lb />them, are still having a tough time<lb />when it comes to powerful blacks<lb />and their feet of clay.<lb /><lb />Consider the case of the late, unla-<lb />mented Field Marshal Dr. Idi Amin<lb />Dada, former president-for-life of<lb />Uganda.<lb /><lb />His cruelty, capriciousness and de-<lb />pravity were the stuff of legend.<lb /><lb />His thugs imprisoned, tortured,<lb />and murdered hundreds of thou-<lb />sands (some say more than a million)<lb />young black men. They raped thou-<lb />sands of young black women in vil-<lb />lages across the country, simply be-<lb />cause they knew they could.<lb /><lb />The world was horrified. Amin<lb />was universally reviled.<lb /><lb />But in the United Sfates, Amin be-<lb />came a hero of sorts among the black<lb />elite, because of his open disdain for<lb />and mocking of powerful whites.<lb /><lb />The feeling was, if white America<lb />finds this black man so revolting, he<lb />canTt be all bad.<lb /><lb />Fast-forward to two years ago. Ni-<lb />gerian Gen. Sani AbachaTs strangle-<lb />hold on his country is squeezing out<lb />the fragile democracy movement.<lb /><lb />Dissent, freedom of expression,<lb />and crushing of any attempts to pull<lb />the country out of its endemic cor-<lb />ruption have made it a buzzword in<lb />international circles.<lb /><lb />International groups everywhere<lb />had joined in calling for him to give<lb />up power and release from jail the<lb />man, Chief Abiola, who won the of-<lb />fice of president fair and square.<lb /><lb />Almost everywhere. From the<lb />pages of black publications in the<lb />United States came excuses.<lb /><lb />The most amazing one was that<lb />Western countries canTt impose<lb />their style of democracy on Africa; it<lb />must move toward democracy at its<lb />own pace.?<lb /><lb />The idea, apparently, was that this<lb />was some kind of new oAfrican-style<lb /><lb />democracy? that white people<lb />wouldnTt understand.<lb /><lb />A dictatorship. Crushing of dissent<lb />isnTt a difficult concept, regardless of<lb />oneTs ethnic background. Political<lb />terror is terror; corruption is corrup-<lb />tion; and jail is jail, everywhere.<lb /><lb />Well, almost. A group of black<lb />publishers went on a ofact-finding?<lb />tour of Nigeria, bankrolled by the<lb />Nigerian government.<lb /><lb />They stayed in luxurious hotels<lb />and were chauffeured about the<lb />country by government officials,<lb />where they were given the opportu-<lb />nity to ask oordinary? citizens what<lb />they thought of the government.<lb /><lb />They reported, wide-eyed and<lb />straight-faced, that there was no cor-<lb />ruption or repression in Nigeria, that<lb />the people loved their leader.<lb /><lb />Then there was Dr. Henry LyonsT<lb />recent shenanigans. With everybody<lb />in the country lambasting him,<lb />voices arose within the black commu-<lb />nity to defend him.<lb /><lb />Leave Dr. Lyons alone, they said.<lb />HeTs ours, and itTs not any of your<lb />business to choose who we follow.<lb /><lb />That, unfortunately, seems to be a<lb />recurring theme. The fact that white<lb />people are outraged by certain<lb />people, and are taking a great deal of<lb />pleasure in reporting their shortcom-<lb />ings, is viewed as reason enough for<lb />the community to rally behind them.<lb /><lb />It reminds us of the time when the<lb />opponents of black freedom said Jim<lb />Crow must be defended, because the<lb />communists were reporting our<lb />problems with such glee.<lb /><lb />It was a silly argument then, and it<lb />is now.<lb /><lb />We need to decide, once and for<lb />all, that if a black leader is killing,<lb />torturing, raping, or even stealing<lb />from and lying to other black people,<lb />it is actually worse than if someone<lb />from outside the community does it.<lb /><lb />Not better.<lb /><lb />Another Controversy<lb /><lb />It was bound to happen.<lb /><lb />The national black holiday, Kwan-<lb />zaa, is starting to take off in the<lb />black community.<lb /><lb />After about 20 years of not know-<lb />ing exactly what to do about the<lb />new, omade-up? holiday, African-<lb />Americans have incorporated it into<lb />their holiday ritual.<lb /><lb />It makes a nice bridge in the holi-<lb />day season between Christmas and<lb />New YearTs, which black folks have<lb />not given up.<lb /><lb />So it shouldnTt be too surprising<lb />that, with its increased importance,<lb />certain groups (possibly hoping to in-<lb />crease their importance) have begun<lb />pontificating on how it is and is not<lb />to be observed.<lb /><lb />A couple of years ago those<lb />groups, notably that headed by<lb />Conrad Worrill, demanded that<lb />Kwanzaa-based advertising be<lb />pulled by national chain stores. It<lb />sullied the holidayTs spirit, they said.<lb /><lb />The latest fuss is over Kwanzaa<lb />stamps and merchandise to be issued<lb />by the U.S. Postal Service.<lb /><lb />The twist this time is that it is the<lb />inventor of Kwanzaa himself, Dr.<lb />Maulana Karenga, who is being tar-<lb />geted by a watchdog group, the Na-<lb />tional Leadership Council of Elders.<lb /><lb />This group was furious that<lb />Karenga, who understandably con-<lb />siders Kwanzaa his holiday and his<lb /><lb />the final word on how it should be<lb />observed, made a deal with USPS<lb />for the stamps and merchandise.<lb /><lb />They said that in doing so, he was<lb />guilty of oan affront to the African-<lb />American community, an assault on<lb />the preservation of the cultural in-<lb />tegrity of Kwanzaa.?<lb /><lb />What exactly made the ocultural<lb />integrity? of this African-American<lb />holiday their personal purview isnTt<lb />clear, but they further demanded<lb />that Karenga clear any future deals<lb />on the holiday with them.<lb /><lb />Uh-huh.<lb /><lb />The whole argument seems pretty<lb />silly to us. Not because it is Karenga,<lb />and not this group, that should make<lb />decisions about the holiday.<lb /><lb />No, it is pointless because as of a<lb />few years ago, nobody has that<lb />power anymore.<lb /><lb />The holiday is now the property of<lb />the African-American people, not<lb />Dr. Karenga and not any one or two<lb />or three groups who have decided<lb />that they and they alone know how it<lb />is osupposed? to be observed.<lb /><lb />It has its own life now, and will go,<lb />for better or worse, in whatever way<lb />it will.<lb /><lb />The best each of us can hope to do<lb />is to observe it in our own way, and<lb />try not to get too worried about how<lb />other people are doing it.<lb /><lb />It won't help, anyway.<lb /><lb />pay<lb /><lb />CRACK STRIKES SMALL-TOWN A<lb /><lb />MeRICA<lb /><lb />Pets Are A<lb />Danger To<lb />All Writers<lb /><lb />BY TREY BANKHEAD<lb /><lb />I donTt care WHAT the so-called experts say...these ani-<lb />mals in our apartment are plotting something!<lb /><lb />ITve been trying for three hours to write this weekTs col-<lb />umn. If you'll<lb />remember, that is the new Californian law that makes Affir-<lb />mative Action programs illegal, as well as setting back mi-<lb />nority and womenTs rights by decades.<lb /><lb />ITm starting to wonder, though, if ITll EVER get the col-<lb />umn finished! When I got home from classes, I went straight<lb />to the computer and turned it on. I then left while it booted<lb />up, and put my jacket away, and laid out all my other stuff<lb />that I have to work on tonight.<lb /><lb />I went back to the computer, only to discover one cat<lb />(Sam) lying in the chair, and the other (Twinkie) lying on<lb />the keyboard. Thanks to Twinkie, the computer was making<lb />the most God-awful screech, the electronic equivalent of oGet<lb />your big butt OFF me!? It wouldnTt have done the poor ma-<lb />chine any good: TwinkieTs deaf, anyway.<lb /><lb />I pulled Sam off, pulled Twinkie off, and looked down to<lb />discover Sam BACK in my chair!<lb /><lb />Have you ever had a moment while dealing with an ani-<lb />mal when, although you canTt prove it, you just KNOW that<lb />itTs laughing at you? Try it with two cats.<lb /><lb />I grabbed Sam, snatched up Twinkie just as he made a<lb />leap for the keyboard, and carried them to the living room. I<lb />went back into the den and sat down, calling up my notes on<lb />Proposition 209. While I was reading through them, Twinkie<lb />brushed up against my leg. I just ignored him for a while.<lb />The he jumped up into my lap, knocking my hands off the<lb />keyboard in the process. ,<lb /><lb />I dumped him onto the floor, and went back to my read-<lb />ing. He repaid me by sinking his claws into my foot.<lb /><lb />I jumped straight up, a hard thing to do when your legs<lb />are under the desk. Needless to say, I hit the computer desk<lb />with my knees, nearly sending the computer screen toppling<lb />over, and definitely sending Twinkie scampering out of the<lb />room.<lb /><lb />(oHello? Still, theyTre<lb />just cats, and ITm human, so! figured they'd just give up.<lb /><lb />Shows what I know.<lb /><lb />I donTt know HOW he figured it out, but about ten min-<lb />utes later, Sam unplugged the computer. I didnTt even know<lb />he was in the room, let alone under the desk. So you can<lb />imagine my surprise when, in the middle of my typing a<lb />sentence, the computer shuts down. Any kids outside the<lb />window learned some new words tonight.<lb /><lb />I looked under the desk just in time to see a black and<lb />brown tail disappearing out the door. ThatTs when I saw<lb />what heTd done. I plugged the computer back in, then chased<lb />him around the apartment, trying to catch him. (oHello, Hu-<lb />mane Society? ITd like to report a peticide. No maTam, not a<lb />PESTicide, although what I may be killing is a bit of a pest<lb />right now. A PETicide. Well, a homicide is when you kill a<lb />person, right? Well, our two pets are about to die.?)<lb /><lb />Sam managed to hide under the couch, far enough back<lb />so that I couldnTt get to him. ThatTs when I heard the com-<lb />puter screaming for help again. I ran back to the den, and<lb />cleared the door just in time to trip over a furry blur of<lb />motion moving the other way. I lost my balance, hit a chair,<lb />and hit the floor a second later. You know what it sounds<lb />like when a 215-pound man hits a floor at full speed? No? Be<lb />grateful. What it sounds like is nothing compared to what it<lb />FEELS like, believe me!<lb /><lb />By this point, ITd given up. The furdemons had won. I<lb />shut down the computer, went out to the living room, and<lb /><lb />If You Have An Opinion ©<lb />About Our Community...<lb /><lb />SHARE<lb /><lb />turned on the VCR and TV. Nothing like a good action flick<lb />to get your mind off violence, right?<lb /><lb />That notion lasted until Twinkie hopped into my lap.<lb />TwinkieTs our anti-social cat. He HATES people. But then,<lb />heTs been acting weird lately, anyway. I mean, THIS is the<lb />cat whose eyes glow red when he hisses at something!<lb /><lb />They planned it. I canTt prove it, but I just KNOW they<lb />planned it. About thirty seconds after Twinkie got settled in<lb />my lap, Sam came rocketing in from another room. He<lb />jumped onto the arm of the couch, up to the back, down the<lb />length of it, bounced off my head, down to the floor, and<lb />whoooosh out the room. Twinkie just sat there, watching,<lb />and ever-so-innocently pinning me to the couch while his<lb />brother used me as a springboard<lb /><lb />And they say cats arenTt intelligent. HA!<lb /><lb />Want to guess what ITm tempted to do NOW? (oHere,<lb />dear. I made you a pair of furry socks and some fuzzy mit-<lb />tens. No, no special occasion. The cats? I donTt know. I<lb />havenTt seen them moving around since | started on the<lb />gloves.?)<lb /><lb />WHY GARY, INDIANA STILL CRIES<lb />By Harry C. Alford<lb /><lb />President/CEO, National Black Chamber of Commerce<lb /><lb />Gary, Ind. was once a very proud city. A literal suburb of<lb />the great oWindy City,? Chicago, there should be no reason<lb />why the wealth and vitality of its massive neighbor cannot<lb />flow into its streets. But Gary gets none of theT economic<lb />overflow of Chicago. Gary is no longer bustling. It has be-<lb />come one of the most depressing cities in the nation and no<lb />one is to blame but the people of Gary themselves.<lb /><lb />Gary cries today because of a strategic error made by the<lb />black leaders of the area. They decided to become politically<lb />empowered without first, or even considering, becoming eco-<lb />nomically empowered. This is a good study on how not to<lb />govern a locality.<lb /><lb />Politics controls everything in Gary. If you want a job you<lb />must be approved by the local Democrat apparatus. If you<lb />want to start a business or seek a loan, the local political<lb />leaders must bless it. Nothing has to do with ability, poten-<lb />tial or compatibility, it all has to do with politics. Sadly, the<lb />politics is even one-sided"Democrats. Thus, Gary has very<lb />little leverage with the state capital of Indianapolis. Demo-<lb />crats take them for granted and Republicans wonTt give<lb />them the time of day. The only gains that are made are<lb />through the collective efforts and leveraging of the Indiana<lb />Legislative Black Caucus. What we have in Gary is a few<lb />political party cronies overseeing a population that is totally<lb />alienated from the process.<lb /><lb />Under the Richard Hatcher administration, Gary went<lb />through 20 years of largesse. Every citizen with a hint of<lb />ohustle? became a player. Former President Jimmy Carter<lb />was a sucker for black cities such as Gary, Detroit, Cleve-<lb />land, etc., and the federal grants poured in at a phenomenal<lb />rate. More than $1 billion poured into Gary during the<lb />Hatcher years and no one knows what exactly they got for<lb />the money. There became a long line of indicted people who<lb />were carted off to federal prison as the corruption became<lb />apparent.<lb /><lb />With the corruption at full scale, serious inflation, Clean<lb />Air Act costs and the oil embargo, Gary, like many other<lb />cities, faced serious decisions. Unfortunately, at this critical<lb />time, Gary could not function as a normal governmental en-<lb />tity. Big business became frustrated and began to leave.<lb />With the quick reduction in job availability and a frustration<lb /><lb />_ caused by the leadership void, youth began to leave as soon<lb /><lb />as they graduated from high school. The talented and<lb />unpoliticized black middle class also began to leave, follow-<lb />ing the big flow of white residents.<lb /><lb />People finally had enough of Hatcher and voted him out<lb />in favor of Thomas Barnes. The Barnes administration<lb />proved to be no more capable or less corrupt. The first big<lb />decision this black mayor made was to eliminate the affir-<lb />mative action plan put into place by Richard Hatcher. Imag-<lb />ine, a black mayor of a black city abolishing affirmative ac-<lb />tion. You see, affirmative action gets in the way of patronage<lb />and corruption.<lb /><lb />We would refer large black businesses to consider Gary<lb />for opening up new offices and providing job growth. Every<lb />one of them was ohit up? by the local politicals to the point of<lb />disbelief and horror. Their positive attitudes quickly<lb /><lb />changed.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />What Is FarrakhanTs Wedding Gift?<lb /><lb />_ 0<lb /><lb />By John William Templeton<lb />An Analysis<lb /><lb />Anyone who plans to host one<lb />million wedding guests should be<lb />expected to give an appropriate<lb />wedding gift.<lb /><lb />According to estimates, Minister<lb />Louis Farrakhan and the organiz-<lb />ers of the Million Man March will<lb />have brought at least an additional<lb />$27 billion into the African-Ameri-<lb />can community by the time of the<lb />planned million families event in<lb />1999.<lb /><lb />ThatTs the tally from one of three<lb />major consequences of the Million<lb />Man March, despite what some say<lb />is an extensive effort to erase the<lb />memory of its effects from the<lb />black consciousness.<lb /><lb />The march is credited, in part,<lb />with passage of the first increase in<lb />the minimum wage rate in eight<lb /><lb />years. That means between $9 bil-<lb />lion and $20 billion per year for the<lb />six million African-American work-<lb />ers at the minimum wage.<lb /><lb />Most of these workers are part-<lb />timers, but many actually work a<lb />full week without the benefits of<lb />full-time. The lower figure reflects<lb />the impact at 20 hours per week;<lb />the higher figure at 40 hours per<lb />week.<lb /><lb />Another result attributed to the<lb />march is a continuing drop in vio-<lb />lent crime. According to the FBI,<lb />murders were down 22 percent last<lb />year nationally. Supporters say<lb />this drop stems from one million<lb />men and their friends embracing<lb />the call for finding better ways to<lb />resolve disputes, both among them-<lb />selves and with the opposite sex.<lb /><lb />Like the minimum wage, fewer<lb />murders also have economic conse-<lb /><lb />quences: longer work lives and<lb />greater accumulation of wealth;<lb />more willingness to establish busi-<lb />nesses in safer communities and<lb />less family wealth spent on recov-<lb />ering from catastrophe.<lb /><lb />As we remember, critics of the<lb />Million man March said that the<lb />only way it would be successful<lb />was if it reduced crime. Well, crime<lb />has gone down since the march.<lb /><lb />There is also the derailment of<lb />the Republican Contract With<lb />America. Once one million men ex-<lb />pressed their concern, other parties<lb />such as the White House, retirees<lb />and environmental groups seized<lb />the opportunity.<lb /><lb />Without the MMM, many say,<lb />there would not have been the<lb />presidential resolve to force a gov-<lb />ernment shutdown. In fact, it is<lb />said, the march may have had<lb />more to do with the reelection of<lb />President Clinton and the smaller<lb />Republican House majority than<lb /><lb />all the campaign contributions and<lb />soft money.<lb /><lb />Despite that victory, however,<lb />two big challenges made it<lb />through, welfare reform and Propo-<lb />sition 209 in California.<lb /><lb />Though there is disagreement as<lb />to the. lasting effect, the march em-<lb />powered local organizing coalitions<lb />of existing grassroots organiza-<lb />tions.<lb /><lb />One march goal that goes unmet<lb />is the creation of investment funds<lb />for black economic development. If<lb />you have a problem putting your<lb />money into someone elseTs hands, it<lb />is good enough to invest it some-<lb />where through real estate, your<lb />own business, stocks, bonds, annu-<lb />ities, life insurance or foreign in-<lb />vestments, particularly in Africa.<lb /><lb />The community already has $36<lb />billion of its $450 billion in invest-<lb />able dollars, so it makes sense that<lb />part of the MMM windfall should<lb />go into enduring wealth.<lb /><lb />I'LL ALWAYS LOVE MY MAMA"Decacon Wheeler Brown proudly<lb />shows off the love he feels for his mom...Mother Sadie Brown...who<lb />was celebrating her birthday recently. Deacon Brown readily at-<lb />tributes his success to the God-fearing upbringing he received from<lb />mom.
