First, I shall thank you, The<lb />Gentlemen, of the Colony of Vir-<lb />ginia for bringing me here. | am<lb />here to help you solve some of your<lb />problems with slaves. Your invita-<lb />tion reached me on my modest plan-<lb />tation in the West Indies where |<lb />have experimented with some of<lb />the newest and still the oldest meth-<lb />ods for control of slaves. Ancient<lb />Rome would envy us if my program<lb />is implemented.<lb /><lb />As our boat sailed south on the<lb />James River, named for our illustri-<lb />ous King, whose version of the Bible<lb />we cherish and use for conquest. I<lb />saw enough to know that your prob-<lb />lem is not quite unique. While Rome<lb />used cords of wood as crosses for<lb />standing human bodies along its<lb />old highways, in great numbers you<lb />are here using the tree and the rope<lb />on occasion.<lb /><lb />] caught a whiff of a dead slave<lb />hanging from a tree a couple of<lb />miles back. You are not only losing<lb />valuable stock by hangings, you are<lb />having uprisings, slaves are run-<lb />ning away, your crops are some-<lb />times left in the fields too long for<lb />maximum profit, you suffer occa-<lb />sional fires, your animals are killed,<lb />gentlemen, you know what your<lb />problems are; I do not need to elabo-<lb />rate, | am not here to enumerate<lb />your problems, I am here to intro-<lb />duce you to a method of solving<lb />them.<lb /><lb />In my bag here, I have a fool<lb />proof method for controlling your<lb />black slaves. I guarantee everyone<lb /><lb />of you that if installed correctly it<lb />will control the slaves for at least<lb />300 years and make them accept<lb />you as their instructor, superior and<lb />lord. My method is simple, any<lb />number of your family or overseers<lb />can use it and should do so at every<lb />opportunity.<lb /><lb />I have outlined a number of dif-<lb />ferences among the slaves and |<lb />take these differences and any ani-<lb /><lb />mosities and make them bigger. The<lb />Divide and Conquer Technique<lb />makes them confused, disunited and<lb />weak. J use fear, distrust, and envy<lb /><lb />for control purposes. These meth-<lb />ods have worked on my modest<lb /><lb />plantation in the West Indies and it<lb />will work throughout the South.<lb />Take this simple little list of differ-<lb />ences, think about them and be cre-<lb />ative.<lb /><lb />On top of my list is oAGE ? but it<lb />is there only because it starts with<lb />an oA. ? The second is Color or<lb />Shade, then there is Jntelligence,<lb />Size, Sex, Size of Plantation, Status<lb />on Plantation, Attitude of Owners.<lb />Whether the slaves live in the Val-<lb />ley, On a Hill, East, West, North,<lb /><lb />Sen. Martin<lb /><lb />South, Have fine or coarse hair, or<lb />is Tall or Short. With a complete<lb />list of their differences, I will give<lb />you an outline of action "but be-<lb />fore that I shall assure you that<lb />distrust is stronger than trust, and<lb />envy is stronger than adulation, re-<lb />spect or admiration. Their jealously<lb />and greed must be of use also.<lb /><lb />The black slaves after receiving<lb />this indoctrination shall carry on<lb />and will become self-refueling<lb />and self-indoctrinating for hun-<lb />dred of years, maybe thousands.<lb />If done properly only God him-<lb />self will be able to change them.<lb /><lb />Don Tt forget you must pitch<lb />the old blacks vs. the young black<lb />male, and the young black male<lb />against the old black males. You<lb />must use the dark skin slaves vs.<lb />the light slaves and the light skin<lb />slaves vs. the dark skin slaves.<lb />You must develop and use the<lb />female vs. the male, and the male<lb />vs. the female. <lb />Editorials<lb /><lb />Credo of the Black Press<lb /><lb />The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial<lb />and natural antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race,<lb />color or creed, full human rights. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />Straining Mightily<lb /><lb />In among the official press re-<lb />leases last week was a notice of yet<lb />another conference on racism.<lb /><lb />This one, dubbed oUnfinished<lb />Business: Overcoming Racism, Pov-<lb />erty and Inequality in the South, ?<lb />will feature media representatives<lb />who will speak of the future of the<lb />South; where it needs to go and how<lb />to get there.<lb /><lb />Now, don Tt get us wrong (of<lb />course, that admonition is useless,<lb />because it triggers an automatic re-<lb />action to believe the exact opposite<lb />of what one is about to say). The con-<lb />ference is almost certainly a sincere<lb />effort to identify and deal with this<lb />thorny issue.<lb /><lb />And we welcome dialogue, such as<lb />the discussions that are (eventually)<lb />to come out of the President Ts Initia-<lb />tive on Race.<lb /><lb />But black folks have got to ask<lb />themselves why so much mighty<lb />straining and groaning is being done<lb />over what is basically a fairly simple<lb />question with fairly simple answers.<lb /><lb />At the risk of being labeled sim-<lb />plistic, the problem of race in this<lb />country can be distilled into one ba-<lb />sic conflict.<lb /><lb />White people don Tt like black<lb />people.<lb /><lb />Now, before we hear a lot of pro-<lb />testation, yes, there are white people<lb />who bear no animosity toward their<lb />darker-skinned neighbors. They may<lb />even be the majority. Who knows?<lb /><lb />But the problem of race in this<lb />country boils down to the fact that so<lb />many white people just plain don Tt<lb />like black people.<lb /><lb />You can dress it up, couch it in<lb />neutral-sounding phrases, and tiptoe<lb />around the issue, but that Ts it in a<lb />nutshell, and most folks who have<lb />any experience with it would agree.<lb /><lb />White people (too many of them)<lb />don Tt like black people. Don Tt like the<lb />way they look, don Tt like the way<lb />they talk, don Tt like the way they<lb /><lb />dress, don Tt like the way they act,<lb /><lb />don Tt like their music, their food, the ©<lb /><lb />names they give their children.<lb /><lb />These people don Tt want to be<lb />around blacks, don Tt want to work<lb />with them, don Tt want to eat with<lb />them, go to school with them, or, to<lb />the extent possible, even see them.<lb /><lb />They are mean to black people, try<lb />to keep them out of positions of au-<lb />thority, try not to hire them or pro-<lb />mote them, make fun of them in pri-<lb />vate (and through their media<lb />spokesmen, often in public).<lb /><lb />They band together and have like-<lb />minded officials conduct oinvestiga-<lb />tions ? of black officials, businessmen,<lb />and projects to try to get them fired<lb />or shut down, respectively.<lb /><lb />Yes, it Ts true that there are un-<lb />pleasant black people who don Tt like<lb />white people. But for the most part,<lb />black oracism ? and violence toward<lb />white people, where it exists, is in<lb />reaction to things that have been<lb />done to black folks by white folks.<lb /><lb />How do we end discrimination?<lb />Stop doing it. Poverty? Pay people<lb />enough to live on. Animosity and ha-<lb />tred? Be nice. Treat people as<lb />equals. The way you would want to<lb />be treated.<lb /><lb />Black people can help, by telling<lb />white people how they feel and how<lb />they have been affected by racism.<lb /><lb />But, for the most part, odialogue ?<lb />won't help, because most of the prob-<lb />lems between the races aren Tt a re-<lb />sult of honest misunderstandings.<lb /><lb />It Ts a painful thing to say, but if<lb />racism and tensions between the<lb />races are to be eliminated, it is more<lb />or less up to white people. They Tre<lb />the ones doing it.<lb /><lb />Sorry. We wish we could sound<lb />more accommodating, but there Ts not<lb />much black folks can do.<lb /><lb />The oquestions ? just aren Tt that<lb />hard. It Ts the answers that too many<lb />folks seem to be tiptoeing around.<lb /><lb />The Women Ts Turn<lb /><lb />The National Day of Atonement<lb />came and went last week without<lb />much fanfare, as we said it would.<lb /><lb />Attention turns now to the Million<lb />Woman March, scheduled for Oct. 25<lb />in Philadelphia, Pa.<lb /><lb />As we mentioned earlier, this<lb />march is starting to generate quite a<lb />bit of interest. How much participa-<lb />tion it will garner remains to be<lb />seen, but there are indications that it<lb />could be really big.<lb /><lb />For one thing, this event isn Tt be-<lb />ing billed or conceived as being for<lb />black women only. More impor-<lb />tantly, however, it isn Tt being viewed<lb />that way by women nationwide.<lb /><lb />Women of all races have been talk-<lb />ing about the march with increasing<lb />excitement for some months now.<lb /><lb />While the themes of black male<lb />unity and pulling together against<lb />the forces trying to exterminate<lb />them will be absent as rallying<lb />points for this march, the universal<lb />themes that tie so many women to-<lb />gether may be just as compelling.<lb /><lb />Much of the speechmaking will, of<lb />course relate to black women and the<lb />unique problems they face. After all,<lb />they have to deal with oppression<lb />from white men, white women, and<lb />even black men (come on, admit it;<lb />you know it Ts true).<lb /><lb />Ld<lb /><lb />But many of the themes that will<lb />be touched on "domestic violence,<lb /> oglass ceilings, ? and just plain re-<lb />spect as competent and intelligent<lb />contributors to society "strike home<lb />for all women.<lb /><lb />The anger hasn Tt been as explosive<lb />as that displayed by young black<lb />men, but it is there.<lb /><lb />Women are tired of being ignored,<lb />of feeling like they don Tt count in so-<lb />ciety and business, and of being<lb />afraid.<lb /><lb />Many women, particularly black<lb />women, will tell you up front that<lb />they live under a form of ohouse ar-<lb />rest, ? with a very real ocurfew. ?<lb />There are times and places when<lb />they dare not venture out, for fear of<lb />being attacked.<lb /><lb />Every male they meet "whether,<lb />of the ooppressor ? race or their own<lb />black obrothers ? "is a potential rap-<lb />ist and murderer, one to be feared<lb />and watched.<lb /><lb />That fear does something to a per-<lb />son, something that men of either<lb />race just don Tt feel.<lb /><lb />It is one of the many reasons that<lb />a quiet groundswell has been grow-<lb />ing. Women are tired and angry.<lb /><lb />They may just surprise a lot of us<lb />on Oct, 25.<lb /><lb />Coming Together<lb />Again For The<lb />First Time!<lb /><lb />BY TREY BANKHEAD oi<lb />BY TREY BANKHEAD<lb />You know...one of the things that has always amazed me<lb />about the way things are in this country is how screwed up<lb />we are as a people.<lb /><lb />My dad and | used to argue about how much better off<lb /><lb />Blacks would be if Black organizations and businesses were<lb />to actually unite to begin accomplishing goals. I argued that<lb />they already were. He, with nearly thirty-five years of life<lb />experienceron me, disagreed, saying that groups like the Ur-<lb />ban League and the NAACP weren't as involved as they<lb />were oin his day. ?<lb /><lb />Imagine how strange it is for me to have ever reached a<lb />point where I agree with him.<lb /><lb />Still, from what I Tve been seeing for the last few years,<lb />there is actually hope. The Nation of Islam sponsored the<lb />Million Man March two years ago. Last year, there was an-<lb />other one. And this year, the March was broken up into<lb />gatherings all over the country, for a national Day of Atone-<lb />ment.<lb /><lb />But, don Tt think that the men have just been coming to-<lb />gether. The women are coming together too! The Million<lb />Woman March is also this month, bringing together many<lb />women from all over the country to celebrate the strength<lb />and beauty of sisterhood, even as the men celebrated the<lb />strength and beauty of brotherhood.<lb /><lb />It seems to me that the Black community has FINALLY<lb />started the long process of coming together again..for the<lb />first time. I say ocoming together again ? because, to my<lb />knowledge, the last time our communities got together in<lb />such a strong way was during the more publicized oCivil<lb />Rights Movement ? during the sixties. After that, we seemed<lb />to fall apart, despite the best efforts of so many different<lb />groups trying to keep us together. I say that it Ts the ofirst<lb />time ? because, to my knowledge, it is the first time we're all<lb />coming together in quite this way...using our spiritual<lb />strength, and our belief in ourselves, to fight oppression both<lb />from within our community and outside of it. The activism of<lb />the sixties was about oFighting Whitey. ? Today, it Ts about<lb />defining who we ARE as a people. And it Ts begun the right<lb />way...strengthening the line of communication between US<lb />first, before trying to communicate with those we feel are<lb />opposing, and trying to destroy, our communities.<lb /><lb />This growing strength of unity could not have happened<lb />at a time where we needed it more. This decade has been one<lb />of the worst in Black history. Examples of what I mean:<lb /><lb />There are more than 77-THOUSAND complaints of<lb />workplace discrimination backlogged with Equal Employ-<lb />ment Opportunity Commission.<lb /><lb />Despite the fact that it Ts not in the news as often, Black<lb />churches are STILL being burned. It may not be as often,<lb />but it Ts still happening. And if the federal authorities don Tt<lb />think it Ts not a planned operation, then they Tre idiots.<lb /><lb />The thing that scares me the most right now is what<lb />happened in California. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals<lb />supported Proposition 209 (deceptively dubbed the oCalifor-<lb />nia Civil Rights Initiative ?), which effectively ends any kind<lb />of Affirmative Action programs in the state of California.<lb />Haven Tt heard of it? Let me put it this way...Speaker of the<lb />House of Representatives Newt Gingrich (draw your OWN<lb />conclusions) and David Duke (former Grand Dragon of the<lb />Ku Klux Klan) supported Prop. 209. TNuff said?<lb /><lb />Maybe not. Proposition 209 also eliminated research<lb />aimed at the medical problems of women of specific ethnic<lb />groups, outreach programs for qualified women and minori-<lb />ties to encourage them to apply for public jobs in non-tradi-<lb />tional fields, women Ts resource centers on college campuses,<lb />advertising jobs in minority newspapers, tutoring and men-<lb />toring designed to help minority students succeed in school<lb />and to gain skills and leadership ability, and programs<lb />which encourage girls and women to pursue education in<lb /><lb />If You Have<lb /><lb />An Opinion<lb /><lb />About Our Community...<lb /><lb />science and math. Also, it uses broad and vague language<lb />that opens the door to court challenges to activities such as<lb />rape crisis centers, pregnancy leave for women, and women Ts<lb />and ethnic studies. AND, as if all that isn Tt enough, it weak-<lb />ens laws against sex discrimination. A clause of the bill le-<lb />galizes any sex discrimination which is oreasonably neces-<lb />sary. ?<lb /><lb />It Ts that last bit that makes me glad that Black women<lb />are coming together. It Ts the whole bill that makes me glad<lb />that both Black men AND women are coming together. Fi-<lb />nally, I really see our people coming together. The British<lb />have an old saying: oAdversity builds character. ? Put an-<lb />other way, we've all heard it: oWhatever doesn Tt kill you,<lb />makes you stronger. ? Well, the way the Black race has been<lb />treated, it has come pretty close to killing us...physically,<lb />socially, intellectually, and spiritually. Still, as poet Nikki<lb />Giovanni says, our ostrength lows ever onward. ?<lb /><lb />Our race has come together again. We Tve reached the<lb />point where we can go forward faster, and stronger, as a<lb />race. Our ties are tighter, and our understanding of our<lb />strength and power is growing. Now, all we have to do is<lb />figure out what we Tre going to DO with this new awareness.<lb />And, we'd better figure it out fast. Beeause the challenges,<lb />and the threat, to us has never been so apparent. Or, so<lb />uttterly dangerous.<lb /><lb /> GIULIANI TIME T IS BRUTAL TIME FOR<lb />MINORITIES<lb />By C. Stone Brown<lb /><lb />New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is very proud of the<lb />fact that New York City is leading the nation in crime reduc-<lb />tion. In nearly every category monitoring urban crime, New<lb />York has seen a significant reduction. It is the talk of the<lb />criminal community (not the criminals, but experts who<lb />study criminal behavior, such as criminologists, sociologists<lb />and police commissioners). New York is indeed the envy of<lb />many large urban centers who would not mind replicating<lb />the city Ts success.<lb /><lb />There is, however, one category of criminal activity that<lb />has constantly risen under Giuliani Ts first term: police bru-<lb />tality. The latest case involves an alleged sadistic rape and<lb />beating of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant. The irony is<lb />that Giuliani won the election by convincing voters he could<lb />dramatically curb crime. But in New York, depending on<lb />one Ts community, that could mean curbing the crimes com-<lb />mitted by black youths or by New York city police officers.<lb />New York city has become a kind of crime laboratory for<lb />criminologists. Its citizens are enjoying the lowest crime rate<lb />since the 1960s, and yet, there are segments of the city, such<lb />as black and Hispanic communities, who feel less safe. There<lb />is evidence that the New York City police department has<lb />incorporated brutality as standard police procedure, leaving<lb />many to ask if the cure is worse than the problem.<lb /><lb />In a recent edition of Crisis magazine former New York<lb />Mayor David Dinkins equated the city Ts police force Ts dealing<lb />with African-American men with the height of Klan activity.<lb />One might be quick to dismiss Dinkins T comments as the<lb />rantings of a mayor who lost his reelection bid, but the num-<lb />bers seem to support his observations. Indeed, since Dinkins<lb />left office, civilian complaints of excessive force have risen<lb />61.9 percent; abuse of authority allegations, have soared by<lb />86.2 percent, while allegations of illegal searches have<lb />soared 135 percent. Half of these complaints have been filed<lb />by African-Americans, and 25 percent from the Latino com-<lb />munity. These numbers are indicative of a reckless police<lb />force that breaks the law without any fear of accountability.<lb />It is alleged that the police officers accused of raping Abner<lb />Louima with a toilet plunger reminded him who was now<lb />mayor. oThis is Giuliani time, not Dinkins time, ? they alleg-<lb />edly said.<lb /><lb />On the streets of New York City, oGiuliani time ? has<lb />come to mean police brutality in the enforcement of so-called<lb /> oquality of life ? crimes. The strategy to enforce oquality of<lb />life ? crimes was adopted by former New York City police<lb />chief William Bratton. It is central to criminologist Jame<lb />Wilson Ts obroken window ? theory that criminals need to be<lb />punished for petty crimes, such as public drinking, jumping | -<lb />turnstiles, aggressive panhandling, or even littering. The up-<lb />side to this strategy for police has been an increase in confis-<lb />cating illegally owned guns and arrests of people with out-<lb />standing warrants. Its downside has been a marked increase<lb />in police brutality and illegal searches in black and Hispanic<lb />communities,<lb /></p>

But God has<lb />promised strength for the day, rest<lb />for the laborer, and light for the<lb />way. Grace for the trials, with help<lb />from above, unfailing sympathy,<lb />and undying love. ? (Author Un-<lb />known).<lb /><lb />We frequently hear that othe<lb />good life ? is devoid of sickness, mis-<lb />ery and pain, where there are no<lb />health problems. Surely we may<lb />say that would be the good life. But<lb />really, even though we would like<lb />to be free from pain and the<lb /> othorns of the flesh, ? as the Apostle<lb />Paul described his affliction (I]<lb />Corinthians 12:7), we know that<lb />there is opposition in all things.<lb /><lb /> oThere can be no joy without<lb />misery ? (Scripture known as the<lb />Book of Mormon, II Nephi 2:11)<lb />and othere must be opposition in<lb />all things ? (II Nephi 2:23).<lb /><lb />It would not be a good life if<lb />there was not joy at some time.<lb />Some folks may believe that the<lb />good life is a life filled with recre-<lb />ational pursuits and frequent<lb />travel to many places around the<lb />globe and that is true except that it<lb />does not nor will it last.<lb /><lb />There will be lasting memories,<lb />which is grand. Joy, too, is fleeting<lb />and does not stay long while one is<lb />traveling. Traveling is educational<lb />and fun, but it does not bring one<lb />joy for very long.<lb /><lb /> oMoney would make me happy! ?<lb />I have heard many folks say. Yes,<lb />money makes one happy for a<lb />while, but it does not compare with<lb />watching a child achieve a good<lb />goal or take time to give of himself<lb />to a brother or sister who is ill or<lb />hurt.<lb /><lb />It does not compare to a kind act<lb />that saves a person from a bad<lb />hurt or accident. It also does not<lb />compare with being warned and<lb />saved from danger.<lb /><lb /> oThe good life is not found in<lb />Shangri-La, where everything is<lb />supposed to be perfect: or in Uto-<lb />pia, where all conditions suppos-<lb />edly are ideal; or in Camelot,<lb />where everything appears to be<lb />idyllic. If we seek the good life in<lb />these fantasies, we will be disap-<lb />pointed. Shangri-La is an imagi-<lb />nary land, Utopia doesn Tt exist,<lb />Camelot is unreachable, ? said<lb />President David O. McKay in April<lb />of 1960, who was then the presi-<lb />dent of the Church of Jesus Christ<lb />of Latter-Day Saints.<lb /><lb />Although he is deceased, the<lb />truth is still the truth.<lb /><lb /> oHappiness is a byproduct of<lb />righteous living and sharing in the<lb />framework of lofty patterns. Ac-<lb />tions of the moment may be fun<lb />but true happiness depends upon<lb />how you feel after the involvement<lb />is over. ? (Melvin J. It does not mean that<lb />life is all work and seriousness.<lb />Adults have to make a living and<lb />take care of their wee ones and<lb />then teenager, and then help the<lb /><lb />young martieds, but there is or<lb />should be time for relaxation and<lb />good times with others.<lb /><lb />I read, oThe only difference be-<lb />tween a rut and a grave is the<lb />depth. ?<lb /><lb /> oMarriage is the triumph of<lb />imagination over intelligence. ? the<lb />menfolks loved that one! <lb />Jury Says Not Guilty T In Arson Case J<lb /><lb />BY CASH MICHAELS<lb /><lb />stoff writer<lb /><lb />make the right decisions based on<lb />the facts and evidence that you<lb /><lb />, have, o Martin told reporters, not-<lb /><lb />If the state had stronger evi-<lb />dence against Jermaine Smith, the<lb />defendant in the Heritage Park ar-<lb />son case, the jury wanted to see it.<lb /><lb />They didn Tt.<lb /><lb />And that Ts why, according to jury<lb />foreman Charleen Martin, despite<lb /> T the deaths of four young children<lb /><lb />in the apartment blaze that au-<lb />thorities say was set, the 12 mem-<lb /><lb />ber panel of six blacks and six<lb />whites had to acquit Smith Friday<lb />after a weeklong, and many times<lb />emotional trial in Wake Superior<lb />Court.<lb /><lb /> oIt was very difficult because<lb />when you have someone Ts life in<lb />your hands, you have to take ev-<lb />erything into consideration, and<lb /><lb />ing that Smith faced the death<lb />penalty if convicted of the arson<lb />and four first-degree murder<lb />charges.<lb /><lb />Smith, 24, tearfully hugged his<lb />mother, father, and defense attor-<lb />ney Joseph Chesire after an acquit-<lb />tal that took the jury two-and-a-<lb /><lb />. half hours to reach.<lb /><lb />Smith was charged with setting<lb />the Feb. 2, 1996 fire that .killed<lb />four of Angela Wilder Ts seven<lb />young children at the time. He was<lb />arrested and charged two weeks<lb />later, when Wilder Ts oldest daugh-<lb />ter Ebony, then 14, reluctantly told<lb />police that she saw a man dressed<lb />Smith, come into her room with a<lb />gas can that night.<lb /><lb />Ms.Wilder was escorted out of<lb />the courtroom by an unidentified<lb />man. She said nothing when the<lb />verdict was read. ©<lb /><lb />Smith had lived at the 462 Dor-<lb />othea Drive address with Wilder<lb />for a time, and according to testi-<lb />mony, had had an argument with<lb />her earlier that day. Wake prosecu-<lb />tor Zeseley Haislip said the motive<lb />for Smith allegedly setting the<lb /><lb /> T blaze was the fact that Wilder was<lb /><lb />now rejecting him.<lb /><lb />But that Ts all Haislip offered,<lb />and the defense had a field day de-<lb />stroying that case, pointing out<lb />that only under harsh police inter-<lb />rogation did Ebony finger Smith,<lb />whom she previously said didn Tt do<lb />it, and that there is no solid evi-<lb />dence as to how the fire actually<lb />got started.<lb /><lb />One alternate juror was heard<lb /><lb />telling a reporter that the trial was |<lb /><lb /> o a waste of taxpayer's money. ? Ob-<lb />servers noted that none of the po-<lb />lice investigators ever took the<lb /><lb />stand, which is unsual for a capital<lb />murder case. ?<lb /><lb />The damage to Haislep Ts case<lb />was so bad, that by Friday morn-<lb />ing, he decided to throw in the<lb />towel, not present anymore evi-<lb />dence or witnesses, and rested. De-<lb />fense attorney Chesire, who on<lb />Wednesday almost got into a fight<lb />with the prosecutor in the court-<lb />room after telling him he should<lb />have never, brought the case to<lb />trial, didn Tt bother to call one wit-<lb />ness when it was his turn, saying<lb />that the state had failed to prove<lb />anything, especially since there<lb />was no physical evidence linking<lb />Smith to the arso to the arson.<lb /><lb />CHARLEEN MARTIN, JURY FOREMAN<lb /><lb />NEED A CAR?<lb /><lb />GOOD CREDIT ¢ BAD CREDIT<lb />SLOW CREDIT « NO CREDIT<lb /><lb />Ai SMILES "The cast of oWe Necd Love ? are All Smiles. Mr. Atchison<lb />said.<lb /><lb /> oOur customers know<lb />the deals at our $5 Sale<lb />are better than auc-<lb />tions. Auction bidding<lb />often inflates the true<lb />value of a car so'you pay<lb />more, ? Mr. Atchison was<lb />quoted as saying. oHere<lb /><lb />every car is on sale, first<lb />come - first served, get<lb />here early. Word of<lb /><lb />mouth is the best form of<lb /><lb />advertising and if you sell<lb />a customer a good car at<lb />a good price, they'll tell .<lb /><lb />others where they bought<lb /><lb />it, ? Styron said. oWe<lb />expect over 100 custom-<lb /><lb />ers to leave here Saturday<lb /><lb />with great cars at great "<lb />prices. ?<lb /><lb /> oWe've got over<lb />$3,000,000 in new and<lb />used inventory to choose<lb />from - this means over<lb />300 used cars and trucks<lb />for this sale. We want to<lb /><lb />remind everyone that this<lb /><lb />Saturday Ts sale is your<lb />best opportunity to get<lb />savings like this, ? Atch-<lb />ison added. oPlease<lb />understand that for this<lb />sale of $5 vehicles we are<lb />limiting sales to one ($5)<lb />vehicle per family. Since<lb /><lb />we're a local business and<lb /><lb />we've had such tremen-<lb />dous support from this<lb />community - we Tre really<lb /><lb />pleased to give something<lb /><lb />back by selling these cars<lb />at savings our customers<lb />have really grown to<lb />appreciate. ?<lb /><lb /></p>
