Bacteria is<lb />present everywhere and we can<lb />not get rid of it but we can mini-<lb />mize its harmful effects. Proper<lb />handwashing is the first step.<lb />Proper handwashing should follow<lb />a few guidelines:<lb /><lb />1. Always wash your hands after<lb />using the restrooms, changing dia-<lb />pers, after handling dirty linens,<lb />before handling food, after sneez-<lb />ing and after dressing a wound.<lb />Never handle food with hands that<lb />have cuts, bruises or sores on<lb />them.<lb /><lb />2. Use hot water and plenty of<lb />soap. Hands should be washed at<lb />least 20 seconds. You may need to<lb />check your watch to see just how<lb />long 20 seconds will be.<lb /><lb />3. Rinse with warm water and<lb />dry them with a disposable towel.<lb />Use the towel to turn off the fau-<lb />cet. Remember, you used dirty<lb />hands to turn it on.<lb /><lb />Children need to be taught how<lb />to properly wash their hands and<lb />may need some supervision to<lb />make sure they do it correctly. The<lb />importance of handwashing can<lb />not be over emphasized as a<lb />means to cut down on the spread<lb />of microorganisms which may be<lb />harmful.<lb /><lb />OFFICER<lb /><lb />Continued from page 1<lb /><lb />Coalition Against Racism calls<lb />for an immediate and complete in-<lb />vestigation of the circumstances<lb /><lb />Asurrounding the arrest of Leonard<lb />oTyson on Aug. 27, 1997. It also<lb /><lb />calls for the establishment of an in-<lb />dependent, civilian complaint re-<lb />view board to truly monitor Green-<lb />ville Police Department operations.<lb />On Oct. 9, 1995 the Greenville City<lb />Council voted unanimously to<lb />study the need for a oPolice Com-<lb />mission?. This mandate has yet to<lb />be implemented.<lb />C.A.R. POSITION<lb /><lb />On Monday, Oct. 23, 1995, a civil<lb />law suit was filed in U.S. District<lb />Court in New Bern, N.C. against<lb />the City of Greenville and Green-<lb />ville Police Officer Bruce A.<lb />Groccia. The City of Greenville and<lb />Police Officer Groccia are being<lb />charged with violating Federal<lb />Civil Rights laws protecting a<lb />citizenTs rights to free speech and<lb />to redress grievances. They are<lb />also charged with false arrest, use<lb />of excessive force and violation of<lb />Don CavelliniTs right to distribute<lb />leaflets during March 4, 1995,<lb />march by the Coalition Against<lb />Racism (C.A.R.).<lb /><lb />The Police Department and the<lb />District Attorney must have real-<lb />ized the power of the organized<lb />citizenry because Don was released<lb />the very day of the march, just two<lb />hours after he was wrongfully ar-<lb />rested. The charges were then<lb /><lb />dropped three weeks later before<lb /><lb />going to trial. The dropping of the<lb />charges was both a victory for ev-<lb />ery citizen willing to stand up for<lb />what he or she believes I and was a<lb />testament to the solidarity of the<lb />courageous members of C.A.R.<lb /><lb />Hopefully, the filing of charges<lb />against the city will serve notice<lb />that no government can condone<lb />the brutalizing of its citizens--not<lb />Los Angeles with its Mark<lb />Furmans nor Philadelphia as it<lb />plans to execute Mumia Abu Ja-<lb />mal.<lb /><lb />The Greenville Police Depart-<lb />ment (GPD), the Mayor and the<lb />City Manager already stand ac-<lb />cused of perpetrating and/or toler-<lb />ating racism, sexual harassment,<lb />selective enforcement and retalia-<lb />tion in the cases of Lt. Angelo<lb />Fordham and Corporal C.J.<lb />Melvin. On Oct. 9, 1995, the Green-<lb />ville City Council voted unani-<lb />mously to study the need for a oPo-<lb />lice Commission? to review the<lb />GPDTs operations. We urge citizens<lb />to sign and circulate the petitions<lb />for a civilian police complaint re-<lb />view board.<lb /><lb />ThereTs a pattern of denying<lb />people democratic means for solv-<lb />ing problems in this city and<lb />county. C.A.R. had been denied a<lb />permit to march on two occasions<lb />and government officials have re-<lb />fused to sit down and negotiate<lb />with recognized worker and com-<lb />munity leaders. Lt. Fordham, Cpl.<lb />Melvin and other Black police offic-<lb />ers have been orailroaded? when-<lb />ever they exercised their demo-<lb />cratic rights. Bill Worthington was<lb />fired for helping to expose 45<lb />health and safety violations in the<lb />Pitt County bus garage and repre-<lb />senting his fellow bus drivers. He<lb />is now a candidate for town council<lb />in Winterville, N.C.<lb /><lb />ItTs time for City and County offi-<lb />cials to enter into a dialogue with<lb />concerned citizens, otherwise, it<lb />will impede the progress Eastern<lb />North Carolina can make.<lb /><lb />SCORES<lb /><lb />Continued from page 1<lb /><lb />enrollment. The more courses stu-<lb />dents take in every subject and the<lb />more rigorous the quality of those<lb />courses, the more prepared stu-<lb />dents will be for college admission<lb />and for college success,? Supt.<lb />Ward said.<lb /><lb />The fact that more North Caro-<lb />lina students are taking Advanced<lb />Placement (AP) courses is one indi-<lb />cator that this message is being<lb />heard. AP courses are rigorous, col-<lb />lege-level courses which students<lb />take in high school. Students can<lb />earn college credit for these courses<lb />through the national AP exams. A<lb />total of 16,436 students took at<lb />least one AP exam in North Caro-<lb />lina last year, a 3.3 percent in-<lb />crease from 1996. Of the 26,148 AP<lb />exams taken by these students, the<lb />students earned college credit for<lb />15,647 of the exams. This is a 13<lb />percent improvement from 1996<lb />performance,<lb /><lb />Supt. Ward also noted that more<lb />efforts need to be targeted toward<lb />minority students whose scores<lb />continue to trail the scores of white<lb />students. Participation rates for<lb />minority students have improved<lb /><lb />over time, but more needs to be<lb />done to help prepare these stu-<lb />dents to do well on the test, Ward<lb /><lb />said.<lb />KMART<lb /><lb />Continued from page 1<lb /><lb />work with SVST own retail cash<lb />card platform.<lb /><lb />Kmart Corp. serves America<lb />with 2,122 Kmart and Super<lb />Kmart Center retail outlets.<lb /><lb />In addition to serving all 50<lb />states, Kmart operations extend to<lb />Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Is-<lb />lands and Guam.<lb /><lb />WILLIAMSTON<lb /><lb />Continued from page I<lb /><lb />reach for the one she sent some<lb />years back.<lb /><lb />Sympathy expression is extended<lb />to Columbus Brown whose sister,<lb />Ms. Evelyn Brown Leary, entered<lb />into eternal rest on Aug. 18. Hating no person, fearing no person in the<lb />firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.<lb /><lb />A Lady Passes<lb /><lb />Some of our white readers may be<lb />surprised to learn that blacks, too,<lb />mourn the passing of Lady Diana,<lb />the former Princess of Wales.<lb /><lb />That is certainly understandable.<lb />After all, Princess Diana was at one<lb />time the wife of the Prince of Wales.<lb />Her mother-in-law was the Queen of<lb />England.<lb /><lb />You canTt get much whiter than<lb />that, and an outside observer might<lb />be forgiven for wondering what<lb />there was about Diana that black<lb />folks could find interesting or rel-<lb />evant to their situation.<lb /><lb />It is true that, although black folks<lb />like a fairy tale as much as the next<lb />fellow, they werenTt quite as caught<lb />up in the hysteria over the royal<lb />wedding back in the T80s as the main-<lb />stream population.<lb /><lb />But Princess Di quickly set herself<lb />apart from the rest of royal crowd. It<lb />became obvious that, though she was<lb />of aristocratic stock herself, she was<lb />anything but overawed by their af-<lb />fectations and trappings.<lb /><lb />While maintaining discretion and<lb />decorum, she let her displeasure be<lb />known.<lb /><lb />And when she realized that her<lb />marriage to Prince Charles would be<lb />a typical royal marriage, complete<lb />with boarding-school children, an ab-<lb />sentee husband and the standard<lb />complement of royal mistresses,<lb />Princess Diana did the unthink-<lb /><lb />able"she called it quits and de-<lb /><lb />manded out.<lb /><lb />A woman who would rather raise<lb />her children in a loving family than<lb />be the Queen of England someday.<lb />That was something that impressed<lb />black folks.<lb /><lb />As she moved into her new role as<lb />Lady Diana, she impressed black<lb />folks even more.<lb /><lb />She began to go out into the field,<lb />where the aristocracy never ven-<lb /><lb />tured. She began to champion causes<lb />that they never talked about.<lb /><lb />She touched lepers. She spoke of<lb />causes and issues that were out of<lb />her traditional sphere. This is particularly true in<lb />opockets of need,? which are de-<lb />fined as areas with low immuniza-<lb />tion coverage.<lb /><lb />The seriousness of childhood im-<lb />munization is dramatized by these<lb />facts:<lb /><lb />*More than 25 percent of chil-<lb />dren between the ages of 19 and 35<lb />months in the United States (ap-<lb />proximately two million) are not<lb />immunized with critical vaccines.<lb /><lb />¢Approximately 100 children die<lb />each year from preventable dis-<lb />eases.<lb /><lb />¢Unimmunized children also<lb />pose a health risk for parents. In<lb />the past year, three parents, ages<lb />20, 25 and 31, contracted chicken<lb /><lb />pox from their children and died of<lb />complications.<lb /><lb />eKach day, 11,000 children are<lb />born in the United States. At the<lb />same time, one million preschool<lb />children in the United States are<lb />missing one or more recommended<lb />vaccinations.
