Porter<lb />Tri-State Defender<lb /><lb />Alma Morris, a 72-year-old, Af-<lb />rican-American woman, 5 feet, 2<lb />inches tall and, all of 1380 pounds-<lb />soaking wet. She Ts an Alabama<lb />native, but a Memphis resident<lb />for some 60 years; wife of Johnnie<lb />Morris Sr. for odome 52 or 53<lb />years, ? mother of three grown<lb />sons, grandmother of six great-<lb />grandmother of three.<lb /><lb />Morris, a long-standing mem-<lb />ber of Corinthian Baptist<lb />Church, has and does tirelessly<lb />serve her community- once ap-<lb />pointed by Memphis Mayor W.W.<lb />Herenton to the Police Advisory<lb />Board.<lb /><lb />But, more<lb />than all, Morris<lb />is a champion<lb />fighter for jus-<lb />tice and equal<lb />rights in hous-<lb />ing, jobs, educa-<lb />tion. Here and<lb />Now, in the 90s,<lb /><lb />Morris is faced with yet another<lb />confrontation with another law-<lb />enforcement official, Shelby<lb /><lb />County<lb /><lb />SheriffA. C. In<lb />the suit Morris claims that Gilless<lb />violated her First Amendment<lb />right to free speech when he<lb />threatened her following a forum,<lb />April 8, 1994, at the Lester Com-<lb />munity Center where Reno was<lb />speaking. In April, during the<lb />final stages of the trial, a deter-<lb />mined Morris burst into tears,<lb />describing the turmoil and<lb /><lb />trauma of the incident. Bill Clinton is one of<lb />those politicians who has built<lb />his career off of reinforcing that<lb />racial divide. But like any poli-<lb />tician who bases his principles<lb />on the polls, the focus groups<lb />and the political winds, what he<lb />did yesterday has no bearing on<lb />what he dogp today. Everything<lb /><lb />is for political gain. Little is for<lb />the good of the country. And<lb />nothing is for the good of Afri-<lb />can Americans.<lb /><lb />In his speech at the Univer-<lb />sity of California in San Diego<lb />he told the country that we have<lb />the opportunity to overcome the<lb />racial polarization that still<lb />plagues America and create a<lb /> otruly multiracial democracy, ?<lb />President Clinton says we need<lb />to have a constructive national<lb />conversation on race.<lb /><lb />. ee . er<lb /><lb />I agree that we need to work<lb />to create a otruly multiracial<lb />democracy. ? Butin order to have<lb />the meaningful conversation<lb />that President Clinton is call-<lb />ing for, then some true things<lb />about the situation that we, as<lb />Black people, find ourselves in,<lb />are going to have to get said.<lb /><lb />Some of those things are go-<lb />ing to have to be about the issue<lb />of political power. <lb />A Simple Strategy for<lb />Success :<lb /><lb />ten lose sight of the common-sense<lb />practically of getting others com-<lb />mitted to doing things for them<lb />willingly. In practice this means<lb />letting them know what you ex-<lb />pect, inspecting what is done, sup-<lb /><lb />well and overlooking those non-<lb />critical things that are not dong<lb />well.<lb /><lb />We should think in terms of do-<lb />ing things for people, instead of to<lb />people.<lb /><lb />There are things that every<lb />manager, indeed virtually anyone,<lb />can do that will produce returns<lb />well out of proportion to the ac-<lb />tion:<lb /><lb />Mrs. Beatrice Maye<lb /><lb />Get Your "M" Voice<lb /><lb />OAV IELL<lb />OWN<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />To get your "M" Voice by mail write to:<lb />The ""M" Voice Newspaper<lb />PO Box 8361<lb /><lb />Greenville, NC 27834<lb /><lb />SUBSCRIPTION PAYMENT MUST BE INCLUDED WITH ORDER<lb />LJ Yes, I'd like a 6 months subscription by mail $15<lb />' () Yes, I'd like a 12 months subscription by mail $30<lb /><lb />Name<lb />Address<lb />e City<lb /><lb />State Zip<lb /><lb />mas!<lb /><lb />~The w T Voice<lb />seaeeiiiaiaadiers dinie-thereeateeueen ener<lb /><lb />Both managers and parents of-<lb /><lb />porting those things that are done:<lb /><lb />1. Hold<lb />off until he is about to do the same<lb />thing again, then challenge the<lb />person to make a more positive<lb />contribution. This way, he will have<lb />achance to do something right, in-<lb />stead of just regretting his mis-<lb />take.<lb /><lb />In practice this is difficult, as I<lb />learned one morning at home. This woman<lb />raised six daughters alone after<lb />seeing her husband of seven years<lb />gunned down in front of her. She<lb />earned a Doctorate degree while<lb />raising those children.<lb /><lb />Make no mistake: Dr. Betty<lb />Shabazz will always be a part of<lb />Black history. She walked with<lb />the legends of Black America:<lb />Malcolm X; Elijah Muhammad<lb />(former leader of the Nation of<lb />Islam); Louis Farrakhan (current<lb />leader of the nation of Islam);<lb />Coretta Scott King (widow of the<lb />Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.);<lb />Myrlie Evers-Williams (former<lb />chairwoman of the NAACP, and<lb />widow of slain civil rights leader<lb />Medgar Evers).<lb /><lb />These were the names that com-<lb />prise our history. And yet,somany<lb />of us did not hear of these names in<lb />school. As a teacher, I am appalled<lb />by how many Black children know<lb />nothing of their own history. For<lb />example, many of them have never<lb />heard of Medgar Evers. But then,<lb />many of them had also been taught<lb /><lb />in earlier years that the Black<lb />Panthers were a terrorist group<lb />working for the Nation of Islam.<lb /><lb />It is this type of ignorance and<lb />deliberate misinformation that Dr.<lb />Shabazz dedicated her life to fight-<lb />ing. She had earned a Bachelor's<lb />degree in Public-Health Education,<lb />and a Master Ts degree in Early<lb />Childhood Education. In 1975, she<lb />received her Doctorate in Educa-<lb />tion Administration from the Uni-<lb />versity of Massachusetts at<lb />Amherst. In later years, she served<lb />as the Director of Communications<lb />and Public Relations at Medgar<lb />Evers College in Brooklyn. More<lb />recently, she was the Director of<lb />Institutional , Advancement, and<lb />raised money for scholarships and<lb />books.<lb /><lb />Dr. Betty Shabazz was, first and<lb />foremost, an educator. Her life was<lb />dedicated to fighting ignorance,<lb />intolerance, and hatred. Sheblazed<lb />a path for Black America, demon-<lb />strating that, even in the most<lb />dire of circumstances, you can suc-<lb />ceed if you believe there is not<lb />other possible outcome. To educate our<lb />youth in the ideals that fired the<lb /><lb /> Bet y Sha azz left Black America a dream to pursue }<lb /><lb />life of this woman who was.a<lb />end. To tell our youth, and oiat<lb />them, that a Black person can sug:<lb />ceed, no matter the challenges. By<lb />doing these things, we can teach<lb />our young people to make a differ-<lb />ence in their lives, and in the lives<lb />of those around them.<lb /><lb />To dootherwiseis to say that the<lb />life of Dr. Betty Shabazz made no<lb />difference. And, that, above all else,<lb />would be an even greater tragedy<lb />than her death.<lb /><lb />Plenty of dialouge on race:<lb /><lb />By Russell Baker<lb /><lb />Advance publicity said the<lb />president Ts speech on race last<lb />Saturday would be omajor. ? It is<lb />hard to guess what remains to be<lb />said in a omajor ? vein about race in<lb />the United States so, not surpris-<lb />ingly, after saying it was a major<lb />problem, Clinton found himself at<lb />a loss for a new idea.<lb /><lb />In the absence of a new idea, he<lb />endorsed an old one (affirmative<lb />action), said he was appointing a<lb />committee and called for an ohon-<lb />est dialogue. ? What constitutes<lb />honesty in a odialogue ? on this<lb />subject?<lb /><lb />The president let the question<lb /><lb />pass and lapsed into bromides, as<lb />politicians are apt to do when ex-<lb />pected to orate in the omajor ? style<lb />about matters on which they have<lb />nothing to say.<lb /><lb />Thus: oHonest dialogue will not<lb /><lb />be easy at first. As to what that oconcerted<lb />action ? might be, Clinton did not<lb />hazard a guess. And so, having<lb />nothing of consequence to say, he<lb />dug into the national cliché an-<lb />thology. He came up with, among<lb />other over, worked phrases, othe<lb />classic American dilemma, ? oa<lb />great national effort to perfect the<lb />promise of America, ? the attempt<lb /> oto build our more perfect union ?<lb />and oone America respecting, even<lb />celebrating our differences. ?<lb /><lb />This sounds more like<lb />bloviating than the opening of<lb /> ohonest dialogue, ? but it is only to<lb />be expected in the dead political<lb />air in which the country is be-<lb />calmed.<lb /><lb />The only subject with which<lb />Washington is seriously engaged<lb />this year is<lb /><lb />the balanced budget exercise.<lb /><lb />Clinton had to make a com-<lb />mencement speech, an ancient lit-<lb />erary form requiring inspirational<lb />rhetoric. A call to balanced-bud-<lb />getary greatness would hardly fill<lb />the bill. Race, on the other hand,<lb />always offers excellent rhetorical<lb />opportunities.<lb /><lb />Well, he was also speaking in<lb />California, where people have re-<lb />cently been voting bleak anti-black<lb />anti-immigrant passions. Endors-<lb />ing affirmative action in this be-<lb />nighted territory, the president<lb />could show his critics that there<lb />was at least one unpopular issue<lb />on which he would take a stand.<lb /><lb />The mystery is why the presi-<lb />dent thinks we lack dialogue on<lb />race. A roaring dialogue on race<lb />has been going on here for 350<lb />years.<lb /><lb />SPECT eecSesteeeTetresettiLtett oie<lb /><lb />us<lb /><lb />Two hundred years ago the Con-<lb />stitution spoke honestly about the<lb />American position on race when it<lb />stated that a slave was to be offi-<lb />cially considered only three-fifths<lb />of a human being.<lb /><lb />For cruelly honest dialogue on<lb />race it would be hard to improve<lb />on the Civil War. Lynchings, riots,<lb />murders, corrupt trials, unemploy-<lb />ment statistics dialogue doesn Tt<lb />get any more honest than these.<lb /><lb />Clinton didn Tt say how we could<lb />enjoy a more civilized dialogue. He<lb />seems to think that talking across<lb />the racial divide can produce genu-<lb />ine changes in people Ts ohearts and<lb />minds. ?<lb /><lb /> oHearts and minds ?
