WORRILL<lb /><lb />The Kwanzaa season is right<lb />around thecorner and, once again,<lb />the National Black United Front<lb />(NBUF), Chicago chapter, is pre-<lb />paring for our sponsorship of the<lb />annual citywide Karamu Ya Imani<lb />(Feast of faith ) Kwanzaa celebra-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />This year<lb />Ts Karamu Ya Imani<lb />Kwanzaa celebration will be held<lb />on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 at<lb />Kennedy King College, 6800 S.<lb />Wentworth. The celebration will<lb />begin at noon.<lb /><lb />It is estimated that more than<lb />18 million African-Americans par-<lb />ticipate in some sort of Kwanzaa<lb />event. In the wake of the nsing<lb />African Centered Education Move-<lb />ment in America, it is important<lb />that every segment of the African-<lb /><lb />American community begins pre-<lb />paring for the Kwanzaa season. In<lb />order for this to occur, parents,<lb />teachers, principals, ministers,<lb />business people, and community<lb />activists must begin preparation<lb />immediately.<lb /><lb />The first question that should<lb />be asked in preparation for the<lb />Kwanzaa season is, what is<lb />Kwanzaa and why is it as impor-<lb />tant for African-American people?<lb />In the 1960s, the Black Power ex-<lb />plosion shook up America and suc-<lb />cessfully began the dismantling of<lb />the legal system of racial segrega-<lb />tion in the south. However, many<lb />Blacks felt there was a deeper<lb />meaning to the ideas of freedom,<lb />justice, and equality that had not<lb />been advocated by the Civil Rights<lb />Movement. .The call for Black<lb /><lb />BY ALVIN PEABODY Increased attention was brought<lb />to the public when two Ballou High<lb />School students were found mur-<lb />dered last April just blocks apart<lb />from another in southeast Wash-<lb />ington, D.C. Then two months<lb />later, the Lody of an unidentified<lb />Black female was found gagged<lb />near a vacant apartment complex<lb />and several weeks afterr that, an-<lb />other Black female was discovered<lb />in a wooded area, approximately<lb />three miles from where the bodies<lb />of the two Ballou female students<lb />were found. And in nearby Prince<lb />George<lb />Ts County, Maryland, Nia<lb />Owens, a student at Northwest-<lb />ern Senior High School, was found<lb />dead near her school.<lb /><lb />~The head of the Metropolitan<lb />Police Department<lb />Ts Homicide Di-<lb />vision has told the Informer that<lb />his agency is <lb />omaking an efforts<lb /><lb />in trying to reopen hundreds of<lb />unsolved cases involving the stran-<lb />gulation deaths of more than 100<lb />African-American females within<lb />the last 10 years in the District of<lb />Columbia. But at<lb />some point, we have to think about<lb />what is best for the future of this<lb />university, not what is best for<lb />Eddie Robinson. No football coach<lb /><lb />See, Coach Robinson, page 2<lb /><lb />Why African<lb /><lb />By STEPHEN FRALEY<lb /><lb />Kwanzaa was born out of the<lb />Black nationalism of the 1950s<lb />and 1960s. As large numbers of<lb />African nations gained indepen-<lb />dence, our cultural identity with<lb />the motherland bloomed. For the<lb />first time, we became proud of our<lb />African ancestry.<lb /><lb />When Elijah Muhammad,<lb />Malcolm X and others spoke of<lb />nationalism, physical separation<lb />was the ultimate goal. This fright-<lb />ened many of our people. The idea<lb />of a separate nation has lost favor<lb />over the ears, but the mention of<lb />nationalism still engenders those<lb />old fears.<lb /><lb />Fortunately we have more pal-<lb />atable definition s of nation. We've<lb />put too much blood and sweat into<lb />the United States to just walk<lb />away. And the thought that<lb />America would surrender part of<lb />herself for any cultural or ethnic<lb />group is beyond comprehension.<lb />Black nationalism in the modern<lb />sense is focused an the men tal,<lb />emotional, economic, political and<lb />social aspects of our lives. The es-<lb />sence of a nation is not separate<lb />territory but, common interests,<lb />customs, origins, his tory and lan-<lb /><lb />guage.<lb />Kwanzaa is a Kiswahili term<lb />which means <lb />othe first fruits ofthe<lb /><lb />Black communities around the<lb />country preparing for Kwanzaa ;<lb /><lb />concept of Kwanzaa, as Karenga<lb />established it, was derived from<lb />the African custom of celebrating<lb />the harvest season. Karenga ex-<lb />plains that <lb />othe origins of Kwanzaa<lb />on the African continent are in the<lb />agricultural celebrations called the<lb /><lb />ofirst fruits<lb /> celebrations and to a<lb />lesser degree the full or general<lb />harvest celebrations. It is from<lb />these first fruit celebrations that<lb />Kwanzaa gets its name which<lb />comes from the Swahili phrase<lb /><lb />~Matunda Ya Kwanzaa.<lb /><lb /><lb />Karenga further explains, <lb />oThe<lb />first fruit celebrations are recorded<lb />in African history as far back as<lb />Egypt and Nubia and appear in<lb />ancient and modern times in other<lb />classical African civilizations such<lb />as Ashantiland and<lb /><lb />D.C. During this time, we pay tribute<lb />to our ancestors and celebrate our<lb />rich culture. Dr. Maulana<lb />Karenga, a Black studies profes-<lb />sor founded Kwanzaa in 1966 as<lb />an expression of cultural national-<lb />ism. | Nguzo Saba, the seven<lb />principles of Kwanzaa, are excel-<lb />lent guidelines for lifting our selves<lb />and redoubling our efforts toward<lb />human rights and equal opportu-<lb />nity. We must do our best to incor-<lb />porate the Nguzo Saba into our<lb />most fundamental beliefs, values,<lb />thoughts and goals. The seven<lb />principles are: Umoja (unity),<lb />Kujichagulia (self-<lb />determination), Ujima(collective<lb />work and responsibility), Ujamma<lb />(cooperative economics), Nia (pur-<lb />pose), Kuumba (creativity), and<lb />Imani (faith).<lb /><lb />Kwanzaa has been observed in<lb />America for 30 years. Why do so<lb />many continue to resist celebrat-<lb />ing it?<lb /><lb />The first day of Kwanzaa fol-<lb />lows so closely after Christmas<lb />that many Christians misperceive<lb />it as a competing religious holi-<lb />day. Others find it difficult to cel-<lb />ebrate Kwanzaa after a busy<lb />Christmas season. It remains sec-<lb /><lb />ongary or forgotten.<lb /><lb />Second, some of our people are<lb />simply unaware of Kwanzaa. It is<lb />unfortunate that in 1996 so many<lb />are still linked by common prob-<lb />lems rather than common goals,<lb />failing individually rather than<lb />succeeding as a group. A common<lb />consciousness is needed.<lb /><lb />Third, there are others who have<lb />lost hopein our progress and choose<lb />not to <lb />owaste<lb /> their time. Apathy<lb />is our worst enemy, and these<lb />brothers and sisters ought to think<lb />long and hard about the legacy<lb />they<lb />Tre passing on to their chil-<lb />dren.<lb /><lb />Fourth, alienation also keeps<lb />Black people from celebrating<lb />Kwanzaa. All of us have been<lb />brainwashed by the media<lb />Ts nega-<lb />tive portrayals of Africa. These<lb />negative images continue to con-<lb />trol many. They are so alienated<lb />and confused that the mere men-<lb />tion of African words or customs<lb />embarrasses them. It is difficult<lb />to reverse this trend because we<lb />lack mainstream media support.<lb />If folks saw Kwanzaa covered in<lb />the news, on talk shows and in<lb />dramas and sitcoms, they would<lb />gradually embrace the concept.<lb />There should be an annual televi-<lb />sion special which would delin-<lb />eate the seven principles with dis-<lb />cussion, celebration a<lb /><lb />ment. i,<lb />Finally, I believe that some Afri- <lb />T<lb />can-Americans refuse to celebrate<lb />Kwanzaa due to subconscious fear<lb />of offending white people (e.g. su-<lb />pervisors, colleagues and friends).<lb />There is the assumption that to<lb />embrace one<lb />Ts culture is tanta-<lb />mount to denigrating another cul-<lb />ture. Folks need to realize thatitis<lb />not about superiority, but choice.<lb />Embracing Kwanzaa demands<lb />open-mindedness. It demands that<lb />we learn about ourselves and be-<lb />come involved in the struggle for |<lb />independence, dignity and respect. <lb />~<lb />Kwanzaa implores us to identify |<lb />with our African heritage and to<lb />be proud of our accomplishments<lb />the world over. It demands that<lb />we have the courage to change and 7<lb />the commitment to continue grow- :<lb />ing. In essence, to overcome our<lb />resistance to Kwanzaa demands<lb />T<lb />that we develop a new perspective<lb />on life. We<lb />all love Coach, but this is =e<lb />all of us.<lb /><lb /><lb />Earlier this week, a source in<lb />Ruston, La., told the Amsterdam<lb />News, <lb />oCoach was real upbeat<lb />about being considered to coach<lb />for another year. It would prob-<lb />ably be a smart thing to do if all<lb />parties agree to give him another<lb />year. The 400 wins killed him,<lb /><lb />said our source. .<lb /><lb />oHe was so busy going around<lb />the country, heignored recruiting.<lb />They missed out on a lot of play-<lb />ers.<lb /><lb /><lb />Robinson, realizing his back is<lb />against the wall, has hit the re-<lb />cruiting trail. Saturday, he will be<lb />in the New Orleans State 5 differ-<lb />ent class championships at the<lb />New Orleans Superdome.<lb /><lb />oOne more year would mean a<lb />lot to me,<lb /> said Robinson, who ago-<lb />nized through a second consecu-<lb />tive losing season (3-8), and the<lb />fourth in the past 10 years. <lb />oI know<lb />a lotof the alumni want me to go,<lb /><lb />says Robinson, <lb />obut I love<lb />Grambling and it<lb />Ts hard to just<lb />give it up.<lb /><lb /><lb />Those urging Robinson to resign<lb />point to some serious issues sur-<lb />rounding the program. He faced<lb />up to his team in 1995 when they<lb />didn<lb />Tt receive their Heritage Bow]<lb />rings from the 1994 game as prom-<lb />ised. A potential boycott was pre-<lb />vented. The players eventually<lb />received their rings. .<lb /><lb />The school<lb />Ts athletic programs,<lb />in particular the men<lb />Ts and<lb />women<lb />Ts basketball programs as<lb />well as the football program, has<lb />been under NCAA scrutiny for the<lb />past eight months. Charges of<lb />grade changing, illegal practices<lb />and other infractions have been<lb />cited.<lb /><lb />oT'd like to go out coaching,<lb /> said<lb />Robinson. <lb />oThe fish don<lb />Tt bite for<lb />me. I want to go ont<lb />swinging.<lb /><lb /><lb />Many say the coach has finally<lb />struck out, and now it<lb />Ts time to let<lb />someone else step to the plate. Bit<lb />there are strong indications Rob<lb />may get another year. When you<lb />think of all his accomplishments<lb />and what he has meant to<lb />Grambling, perhaps he should get<lb />another year. African-Americans,<lb />other minorities and women have<lb />been treated as second class citi-<lb />zens for centuries in this great na-<lb />tion. Affirmative action programs,<lb />which have existed for only 30 years,<lb />have attempted to correct these<lb />long-term abuses. Despite that at-<lb />tempt, there is no way in the world<lb />that such programs have righted<lb />the wrongs. That being the case,<lb />the healing has not been completed<lb />and should be allowed to continue.<lb />For decades, the United States has<lb />been called the <lb />oLand of Opportu-<lb />nity<lb /> and has also engendered in<lb />many of its citizens a quest to share<lb />in the so-called <lb />oAmerican Dream.<lb /><lb />Affirmative action programs were<lb /><lb />second Cc<lb /><lb />originally drafted to extend the pre-<lb />viously mentioned <lb />oopportunity<lb /><lb />and <lb />odream<lb /> to millions of people<lb />who had been traditionally locked<lb />out of the system Some people<lb />called affirmative action programs<lb />discriminatory because a number<lb />of the programs wrongly permitted<lb />less-qualified women and minori-<lb />ties to go to college, to get jobs and<lb />contracts while denying more quali-<lb />fied White males. That was wrong<lb />and was never the intent ofthe<lb />original affirmative action laws<lb />imposed by the federal government.<lb />Andy Porter, a 67-year-old White<lb />voter in California, said, <lb />oI<lb />Tve been<lb />working 40 years and the only dis-<lb />crimination I<lb />Tve seen has been to-<lb />ward me because of affirmative ac-<lb />tion. (Employers) say, <lb />~Today we<lb />have to hire a Black person or a<lb />brown person,<lb />T even though the<lb />White or other is more qualified.<lb /><lb /><lb />T<lb />i<lb />4<lb /><lb />That, however, is not what affirma-<lb />tive action is supposed to do. It was<lb />hever supposed to place an unquali-<lb />fied person ahead of a qualified one.<lb />Neither was it intended to be uséd<lb />as a tool to showcase Blacks or mi-<lb />norities as inferior. Mistakes were<lb />made in many affirmative action<lb />programs, but that does not mean<lb />that the concept and its many prgp-<lb />erlyimplemented programs deserye<lb />to be terminated. Thirty years of<lb />affirmative action pro grams have<lb />brought about, in the total measure<lb />of things, only inches of progress for<lb />the nation<lb />Ts minorities and women.<lb />As a result, such programs should<lb />not be ended but, instead, desefvé<lb />to be extended. Anyone who ques-<lb />tions that should remember the ve-<lb />cently revealed Texaco tapes and<lb />how executives at the company:la-<lb />bored to allegedly keep minorities<lb />from being promoted. =<lb /><lb />w<lb />7<lb /><lb />African-American students are 2<lb />embracing the Empowerment Agend#<lb /><lb />By Celina Inman<lb />Challenger Staff Writer<lb /><lb />WILMINGTON<lb />"During the<lb />past few months, Black student<lb />leaders at the University of North<lb />Carolina at Wilmington and Duke<lb />University in Durham, N.¢<lb />joined a growing number of leaders<lb />and organizations that are promot-<lb />ing the National Black Family<lb />Empowerment Agenda. The student leaders are in<lb /><lb />nave<lb /><lb />the process of defining the role that<lb />they should play in the Agenda<lb />movement and developing strate-<lb />gies to contact Black student asso-<lb />ciations all over America. <p>No Praise for King in Promoting first $1<lb /><lb />By HOWIE EVANS<lb /><lb />AmNews Sports Editor<lb />» Two weeks after Evander<lb />Holyfield whipped Mike Tyson in<lb />an epicbattle at the MGM Grandin<lb />Las Vegas, around the nation,<lb />gleeful sportswriters and<lb />sportscasters are still swooning<lb />over Holyfield<lb />Ts win, while<lb />castigating Tyson.<lb /><lb />An overwhelming number of<lb />media types are calling for Evander<lb />to retire and join Muhammad Ali<lb />ag the only fight to win the world<lb />Ts<lb />heavy weight championship three<lb />times.<lb /><lb />But they all have one hidden<lb />agenda. Most wouldn<lb />Tt care if<lb />Holyfield fought until he was 60<lb />years of age. The real reason they<lb /><lb />want Evander to retire is Mike<lb />Tyson.<lb /><lb />The unbridled scorn and hostility<lb />targeted towards Tyson by the<lb />mainstream media would have<lb />Holyfield retiring without<lb />rendering Tyson an opportunity for<lb />a rematch. Keeping Tyson away<lb />from a rematch, and making the<lb />journey to gaining an other<lb />championship that much longer,<lb />would satisfy a legion of journalists.<lb /><lb />But there<lb />Ts another agenda item.<lb /><lb />- By keeping Tyson on the front.<lb /><lb />burner, they deny what everyone<lb />in the entertainment industry of<lb />pay-per-view and boxing is talking<lb />about Don King!<lb /><lb />The main stream media burys<lb />Tyson, while refusing to<lb /><lb />acknowledge the record-setting<lb />accomplishments of Don. King.<lb />America<lb />Ts promoter produced<lb />boxing<lb />Ts first $100 million fight,<lb />aided by huge international sales.<lb />_ Tilted by a record 1.7 million<lb />pay-per-view<lb />subscribers, gross receipts soared<lb />to $85 million. And combined with<lb />another Don King record, an in<lb />arena crowd of 16,325 set a record<lb />live gate of $14,150,700, the biggest<lb />live gate in boxing history. Yeah!<lb />you can bet they'll do it again.<lb />The combination of Tyson and<lb />King, perhaps the most vilified duo<lb />in sports history, is responsible for<lb />keeping boxing in the public<lb />Ts eye,<lb />regardless of media attempts to<lb />downplay King<lb />Ts promotional<lb /><lb />cable/satellite -<lb /><lb />genius.<lb /><lb />Immediately after signing<lb />Holyfield to a promotional contract,<lb />King said, <lb />oI want to make this the<lb />biggest fight ever. All stops are<lb />out,<lb /> said America<lb />Ts promoter, who<lb />put a $50 million price tag on the<lb />fight. <lb />oThat<lb />Ts what it<lb />Ts going to cost<lb />to bring this fight to the public,<lb /><lb />said King.<lb /><lb />Now King is working on a<lb />rematch, and is only waiting for<lb />confirmation from Holyfield. Tyson<lb /><lb />is set. <lb />oHe'll doitifhe likes making <lb />"<lb /><lb />money, and not philosophizing,<lb /><lb />said Iron Mike.<lb /><lb />oWe're going to put together the<lb />biggest rematch in boxing history,<lb /><lb />King promised of the anticipated<lb />sometime in June (21st?) of 1997<lb /><lb />Military is one of country<lb />Ts last<lb />Precious resources<lb /><lb />One of the most remarkable<lb />things about the potential for war<lb />and the realities of being a member<lb />of the military is that a person<lb />might be placed<lb /><lb />in a situation where his or her<lb />life may be put at great risk. That<lb />being the case, the people who<lb />have served time in the military<lb />honorably rep resenting America<lb />are among the most valuable<lb />natural resources our great nation<lb /><lb />Course with<lb />Marine Corps<lb />Detachment<lb /><lb />December 2, 1996 (FHTNC)}<lb />"<lb />Marine Pfc. For Veterans Day, we were<lb />honored to salute them, praise<lb />their contributions and commend<lb />their ability to overcome: great<lb />trials and tribulations. It is a joy<lb />to know that many of them are<lb />still with us, continuing to<lb />constructively contribute to our<lb />continuance as, perhaps, the most<lb />extraordinary country in world<lb />history.<lb /><lb />We are fully aware that the<lb /><lb />United States has survived and<lb />thrived in great part due to the<lb />contributions of the veterans that<lb />we have produced. Those men and<lb />women, from many races and all<lb />walks of life, have shown the world<lb />heroism at its very best. Our<lb />veterans have fought around the<lb />globe to free people who were<lb />enslaved, bring justice to the<lb />abused, feed the hungry, clothe<lb />the naked, treat the diseased,<lb /><lb />protect the weak, shelter the<lb />homeless and do countless other<lb />humane and life saving acts. The<lb />world is truly a better place because<lb />of the wide-ranging contributions<lb />made to the long-life welfare of<lb />humanity by our veterans. It is<lb />really wonderful to know that we<lb />have such heroic, yet down-to-<lb />earth people in every state of our<lb />nation and in various places<lb />around the world.<lb /><lb />3<lb /><lb />It's the season for giving...and what better time to share our blessings witht hose who may be<lb />less fortunate. Through a 7<lb />commitment to employment, educational programs, and local causes, the NBMOA <lb />oputs back<lb />into their neighborhoods to share success together. That's what community is all about.<lb /><lb />Staff Photo: Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />rematch. <lb />oIt<lb />Ts going to be bigger<lb />than Holyfield - Tyson 1.<lb /><lb /><lb />King<lb />Ts projection of a June 1997<lb />fight was sweet music to casino<lb />owners in Las Vegas. They took a<lb />major hit, losing millions of dollars<lb />by Holyfield<lb />Ts upset victory. So the<lb />casino sports books are also egerly<lb />awaiting the rematch.<lb /><lb />But shed no tears for the casinos.<lb />They got theirs back in every<lb />conceivable way, doubling up prices<lb />on rooms. You couldn<lb />Tt get a room<lb />in the town. At the gaming tables,<lb />on the weekend of the fight,<lb />minimum bets at blackjack, craps<lb />and roulette were $25 and $100.<lb /><lb />Gaming-wise, the casinos<lb />throughout Vegas raked in millions.<lb />Some hotels lost as much as $1<lb /><lb />"THE *M* VOICE - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16-23,<lb /><lb />00M fight<lb /><lb />millionormorethrough theirsports<lb />books. Davis<lb />1 2/9/96<lb /><lb />My, how we as black people<lb />have changed over the years, I am<lb />forever hearing folks talk about<lb />the good old days this and the good<lb />old days that. The truth of the<lb />matter is that there was a period<lb />we could call the good old days.<lb />Those were the days when the<lb />whole city block was like family.<lb /><lb />All the neighbors knew each<lb />other and cared about each other<lb />The kids were able to walk toschool<lb />and the teachers knew their<lb />parents. It did not really matter<lb />whether or not the teachers knew<lb />the parents because the teachers<lb />could handle discipline problems<lb />without worrying about being<lb />charged with a crime.<lb /><lb />There was a such thing as an<lb />extended family and the old people<lb />were respected. Yes, those were<lb />the good old days for black folk.<lb />Black businesses prospered<lb />because white businesses would<lb />not respect or treat blacks right<lb />even if the blacks paid them.<lb /><lb />Those were the days of black<lb />social clubs, black schools, black<lb /><lb />restaurants, and black stores. We<lb />had to stick together because we<lb />were allin the same boat. We were<lb />in the so-called vicious boat of<lb />segregation and discrimination.<lb />Some people would call those days<lb />hard times.<lb /><lb />The question, however, is<lb />whether or not they were really<lb />hard times? We were tolerant of<lb />each other and the black<lb />community actually thrived. There<lb />was a rhythm in the black<lb />neighborhoods and the rhythm<lb />protected the heritage of the black<lb />community. What happened to<lb />that rhythm?<lb /><lb />Let me try to answer the<lb />question. I think we lost our<lb />rhythm when we gained our<lb />freedom. Not the freedom that<lb />Lincoln conferred on the slaves,<lb />but that freedom which we gave<lb />ourselves.<lb /><lb />The freedom to shop and live<lb />where we please. Once we: were<lb />free to give our money to white<lb />people regardless of how we were<lb />treated, we took great advantage<lb />of that freedom. We flocked out of<lb />our neighborhoods, abandoning<lb />our clubs, our schools, our<lb /><lb />Bring In This Mini Credit Application<lb />And Receive Your FREE Gift From<lb /><lb />FURNITURE LIQUIDATORS<lb /><lb />No Purchase Necessary - While Supplies Last*<lb /><lb />We<lb />Tll Process Your Furniture |<lb />Liquidators Charge While You Wait!<lb /><lb />Name<lb /><lb />Address<lb /><lb />Phone<lb /><lb />Social Security #<lb /><lb />Date of Birth<lb /><lb />1 Work Place<lb /><lb />Monthly Income<lb /><lb />Signature<lb /><lb />By signing this application you promise that all intormation is true and complete. Now I am not saying that<lb />shopping white stores and/or<lb />moving into white neighborhoods<lb />is wrong. What I am saying is that<lb />abandoning black stores or black<lb />neighborhoods for no other reason<lb />than to shop white stores or to live<lb />among whites 1s wrong.<lb /><lb />How many black stores have<lb />failed because of lack of .support<lb />from black people. Why is it so<lb />wrong for black people to support<lb />black causes and black businesses?<lb />We must realize that if we do not<lb />support our own, we go under. We<lb />have to get our rhythm back. We<lb />must realize that when one brother<lb />succeeds we all succeed. Contrary<lb />to popular belief, we must still,<lb />even in this day and time, help<lb />each other to succeed.<lb /><lb />No black business should go<lb />under for lack of black support. We<lb />must not let others call us racist<lb />for supporting our own. We are so<lb />happy to have white America<lb />accept us, that we do not realize<lb />that they always support their<lb />own. If you hate<lb />black people, you got no rhythm. It<lb />does not matter if you wear African<lb />clothing or the latest rap craze. If<lb />you do not support black causes,<lb />you got no rhythm.<lb /><lb />How do you get your rhythm<lb />back? Find a quiet place, sit back<lb />and meditate on your life. Think<lb />back to the time when you forsook<lb />your blackness to make it in a<lb />white world. Listen carefully for<lb />the drums. After 400 years here in<lb />America, thedrumsstill beat. Hear<lb />the drums, and your rhythm will<lb />return.<lb /><lb />When your rhythm returns, so<lb />will your blackness. Let me finish<lb />by saying that when you hear white<lb />folk wishing for the good old days,<lb />you better watch out. What they<lb />are really wishing for is the time<lb />when they did not have to deal<lb />with black folk directly.<lb /><lb />Some are wishing for the return<lb />of Jim Crow, others are wishing<lb />forthe return of slavery, still others<lb />are wishing we were never brought<lb />over from Africa. We must wake<lb />up and feel the beat. Support your<lb />own, and maybe your rhythm will<lb />return.<lb /><lb />Prevent Child Abuse<lb /><lb />Dear Editor:<lb /><lb />The holiday season is upon us.<lb />Unfortullately the season is not a<lb />happy one for many children across<lb />North Carolina. People<lb />are rushing to finish shopping, cook-<lb />ing, cleaning, and decorating. Our<lb />calendars are full of social events,<lb />and sometimes we try to do too<lb />much. A poll in a recent issue of<lb /><lb />rentin ine found that<lb /><lb />omore than a quarter of the popula-<lb />tion views Christmas and Hanuk-<lb />kah as stressful.<lb /> Over-extending<lb />ourselves causes stress, and stress<lb />can increase the risk that we will<lb />abuse our children.<lb /><lb />When holiday stress is added to<lb />everyday stress, it<lb />T easy to take it<lb />out on your kid. Abuse takes many<lb />forms and its effects can last a<lb />lifetime. Harsh physical punish-<lb />ment, constant criticism and belit-<lb />tling, neglecting children<lb />Ts basic<lb />needs, even isolated incidences of<lb />rejection or humiliation can dam-<lb />age achild. Keep in mind that holi-<lb />day excitement can he stressful for<lb />kidss well as parents. Put the fol-<lb />lowing <lb />oHoliday Stress Prevention<lb />Tips<lb /> into action to make the holi-<lb />day season more enjoyable for the<lb />entire family.<lb /><lb />1.. :<lb />ULE: Meals, naps, and bedtime<lb />should occur at approximately the<lb />same time each day. A well-fed and<lb />rested child is more pleasant and<lb />cooperative than a hungry, tired<lb />child. Schedule shopping trips and<lb />outings for the times of the day that<lb />you and your children are both feel-<lb />ing energetic. Bring snacks to cat<lb />while you<lb />Tre away from home, as<lb />well as a bag of tricks with coloring<lb />books, story books, playdough,<lb />puzzles, and a special video.<lb /><lb />2.1<lb /><lb />DI<lb /><lb />HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS:<lb />Encourage your child to help with<lb />shopping, baking, and gift-wrap-<lb />ping. At the store, discuss colors<lb />and shapes, or play guessing games.<lb />Let your child pour and stir ingredi-<lb />ents for cookies, make holiday cards.<lb />and put bows on presents. Kids feel<lb />important when adults encourage<lb />them lo help. As kids help with<lb />holiday activities, they learn how to<lb />carry on the family<lb />Ts traditions.<lb /><lb />3. :<lb />The holiday season is a difficult<lb />time financially for many parents.<lb />Parents have lo keep up with<lb />monthly bills and buy holiday gifts.<lb />Try not to feel guilty if you are<lb />unable to meet the commercial de-<lb />mands of the holidays. Spending<lb />beyond your means will only in-<lb />crease stress when the credit card<lb />bills come in, so keep in mind the<lb />great gift don<lb />Tt have tobe expen-<lb />sive. Take advantage of free events<lb />like the school pageant or church<lb />holiday party.<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />YOUR KIDS: You may not be able<lb />to give your kids all the material<lb />things they want, but you can give<lb />of yourself. Plan a special activity<lb />for just you and your child. Goon an<lb />indoor picnic. Make cookies or pa-<lb />per ornaments if you have more<lb />than one child, set aside a special<lb />time to spend with each one.<lb />5.<lb /><lb />TO THEM: Discuss the rules with<lb />your children and seek their input.<lb /><lb />Keep rules simple and few in num-<lb />ber, and post them in aconspicuous<lb />place like the refrigerator. Share<lb />with children the positive conse-<lb />quences for following rules and the<lb />negative consequences of breaking<lb />then. Beconsistent in applying your<lb />rules for acceptable behavior. Chil-<lb />dren, like adults, respond best to<lb />praise, positive reinforcement, and<lb />rewards may be tangible (stickers,<lb />trip to a restaurant) or intangible<lb />(extra playtime).<lb />6<lb /><lb />. PREPARING FOR NEW<lb />EXPERIENCES: The holidays are<lb />a time of fun events and new expe-<lb />riences. Children may feel stress<lb />during new activities and may ex-<lb />press their fears through anger or<lb />misbehavior. Talk with your chil-<lb />dren beforehand about~ Visiting<lb />Santa, attending a party, having<lb />relatives come to stay, and partici-<lb />pating in the school play. Ask them<lb />how they feel about different activi-<lb />ties, and answer any questions they<lb />have.<lb /><lb />7. REINFORCE GOOD BE-<lb />HAVIOR: Praise encourages<lb />healthy self-esteem. Children need<lb />praise to learn appropriate behav-<lb />ior, so catch your child being good<lb />as often as pogsible. Reward good<lb />behavior by giving special privi-<lb />leges such as having a friend over to<lb />play. Give verbal praise, hugs, and<lb />kisses. You can also give material<lb /><lb />rewards like stickers, gum, and toys. |<lb /><lb />8. KNOW WHAT TO EXPEC r<lb />FROM YOU : Learn<lb />about chilt development (what chil-<lb />dren are typically capable of at each <lb />~<lb />stage of growth), so that your expec-<lb />tations for behavior are appropri-<lb />ate. Unrealistic cxpectations cause<lb />stress for you and your child and<lb />may damage your relationship.<lb />Read books on parenting and child<lb />development, talk to other parents<lb />and your doctor, ant take a<lb />parenting class. It<lb />Tg comfortin to<lb />know that other parents experience<lb />similar difficulties with potty train-<lb />ing, teaching the concept of shar-<lb />ing, dealing with teenage mood<lb />swings, and many other aspects of<lb />child-rearing.<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />ED :<lb /><lb />~Put the child in a safe place such as<lb />the cnb, playpen, or a child-proof<lb />room. Count to ten. Take deep<lb />breaths. Think about the causes of<lb />your anger. Direct your anger at<lb />something other than your child<lb />Yoll can hit a pillow, take a shower,<lb />exercise, or calla friend. Ask aneigh-<lb /><lb />bor or relative to baby-sit.<lb /><lb />10.
