          <lb />THE 'M<lb /><lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA'S MINORITY VOICE - SINCE 1981<lb /><lb />The struggle for<lb />justice continues<lb /><lb />The Coalition Asainst Racism<lb />(CAR) announced that while<lb />some progress has been realized<lb />In the current project of picket-<lb />ing a local Piggly Wiggly store,<lb />there remains some demands yet<lb />to be met.<lb /><lb />CAR further states that a fa-<lb />vorable ruling by the Employ-<lb />ment Security Commission for<lb />Shawan Sutton supports their<lb />claim that Ms. Sutton was fired<lb />from her job as acashter unfairly<lb />and had, indeed, been dis-crimi-<lb />nated against<lb /><lb />In a recent press conference<lb />with the media, CAR informed<lb />the public that three of the de-<lb />mands had been agreed upon by<lb />one of the three Piggly Wiggly<lb />owners. However, it was felt that<lb />these concessions were merely<lb />symbolic gestures that fll far<lb />short of the goals sought bciween<lb />CAR and Piggly Wiggly.<lb /><lb />CAR further stated that they<lb /><lb />MISS JOYCE TYSON, one of the former employees of Piggly<lb /><lb />ATTENTION:<lb /><lb />People: Support<lb /><lb />"African-American<lb /><lb />Those Advertisers<lb />Who Support You<lb /><lb />believe Piggly Wiggly ownersh<lb />is attempting to lure the commu-<lb />nity into believing that these pro-<lb />posals:<lb /><lb /> " to provide a 10% refund<lb />from total receipts on an annual<lb />basis to churches;<lb /><lb /> " to re-hire Shawan Sutton<lb />with acash payment of $2,500.00;<lb /><lb /> " and 50% of senior manage-<lb />ment by African American by<lb />January 1, 1997;<lb /><lb />are their idea and to cast a<lb />negative shadow on CAR. Some<lb /><lb />=a<lb /><lb />¥<lb /><lb /> ~oa @<lb />ne<lb /><lb />By ED SCHAFER<lb />Contributing Writer<lb /><lb />Is racism primarily a guy<lb />thing? A pair of recent studies at<lb />Washington University in St<lb />Louis suggests it might be.<lb /><lb />In the studies, small groups of<lb />men and small groups of women<lb />were assigned to solve a prob-<lb />lem. Several groups were used,<lb />with varying mixtures of blacks<lb />and whites.<lb /><lb />The mixed-race male groups<lb />appeared to be hampered by con-<lb />flicts over dominance and con-<lb />trol when they tried to work to-<lb />gether and solve the problem.<lb />But the women seemed to be<lb />comfortable regardless of the<lb />group Ts makeup, researchers<lb />said.<lb /><lb /> oThis could be very important.<lb />Many researchers have assumed<lb />that men and women behave<lb />pretty much the same when it<lb />comes toracial issues,  said Larry<lb />E. Davis; a professor of social<lb /><lb />work and psychology and one of<lb /><lb />the co-aulhors.<lb /><lb /> oBut our findings suggest that<lb />this is a false assumption. Obvi-<lb />ously, more research is required,<lb />but our sludy definitely raises<lb />the question of whether racism<lb /><lb /> ~searchers think so<lb /><lb />is foremost a male thing. <lb /><lb />The National Science Founda-<lb />tion funded the work by Davis<lb />and Michael J. Strube, a profes-<lb />sor of psychology in arts and sci-<lb />ences<lb /><lb />To keep costs down, Davis T and<lb />Strube Ts work initially limited<lb />their work to how mixed-race<lb />groups of men solve problems.<lb />Each of 30 four-person groups<lb />was placed in a room and asked<lb />to work together on a decision-<lb />making task. Participants later<lb />compleled a questionnaire that<lb />allowed researchers to assess<lb />how individual members viewed<lb />Ihe experience, including satis-<lb />faction with group performance,<lb />confidence in group decisions and<lb />willingness to work with the<lb />group in the future. The results<lb />werc striking, an expert said, in<lb />questioning whether companies,<lb />courts, schools an other institu-<lb />tions may be wrong in assuming<lb />that the best teams for solving<lb />problems arc ones with good ra-<lb />cial mix.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a great contribution,  said<lb />Charles Garvin, professor of so-<lb /><lb />Eastern North Carolina's<lb /><lb />Minority Voice<lb />"What's at stake here is the very future<lb />of all of our children and the nation"<lb /><lb />Joe Madison, on crack<lb />cocaine and the CIA<lb /><lb />Bertie - Windsor<lb /><lb />Tarboro - Sharpsburg<lb />Rocky Mount-Plymouth<lb />Kinston and Wilson<lb /><lb />hee ine<lb />\ Jn gue<lb />LAY<lb /><lb />AR . Umoja Party candidates<lb />Mark Thompson, Rahim Jen-<lb />kins, Rick Malachi and George<lb /><lb />Pope, there is one major victory. -<lb /><lb />In the three most important<lb />races as far as Black people are<lb />concerned this election there was<lb />a major win, the re elec tion of<lb />Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D Ga. ).<lb />Her decisive victory is the most<lb />liberating outcome of this elec-<lb />tion cycle. First, her majority<lb />Black population district was<lb />outlawed by the U.S. Supreme<lb />Sourt and redrawn into a major-<lb />ity white one. Then, became of<lb />her courageous refusal to vote<lb />for a House resolution condemn-<lb />ing Min. Louis Farrakhan, for a<lb />speech by one of the Nation of<lb />Islam leader Ts former rep<lb />resentatives, she was the target<lb />of a vicious race-baiting cam-<lb />paign targeting normally liberal<lb />Jewish voters.<lb /><lb />With McKinney Ts 58 to 42 per-<lb />cent win over Republican John<lb />Mitnick, she has trumped, once<lb />and for all, the  orace card,  and<lb />the  oanti-Semitic card.  Her vic-<lb />tory margin was larger even than<lb />that of fellow Black Rep. Sanford<lb />Bishop(D-Ga.), who won 54 to 46<lb /><lb />percent over another white Re-<lb />publican in a si.nilarly re-<lb />distristed race. With Rep.<lb />McKinney's victory as an ex-<lb />ample, no longer can bigots we<lb />the honorable principle of de-<lb />served solidarity with Min.<lb />Farrakhan as a wedge to intimi-<lb />date elected officials with the<lb />threat that whites will judge<lb />them, solely on the basis of how<lb />they play the  oFarrakhan card. <lb />This doesn Tt mean that weak-<lb /><lb /> ~kneed Black politicians will now<lb /><lb />find their back-bones and stand<lb />up and follow the Nation of Is-<lb />lam leader Ts courageous ex-<lb />ample, but it is a new day for<lb />those who will be fair and open-<lb />minded...even white politicians<lb />can now look at Min. Farrakhan<lb />in a new  oobjective  light.<lb /><lb />In addition to the victories of<lb />Reps. McKinney and Bishop in<lb />now white majority districts,<lb />Texas Reps. Sheila Jackson-Lee<lb />and Eddie Bernice Johnson were<lb />also re elected in districts with<lb />Supreme Court ordered new<lb />bounduies. Also, in Indiana, Re-<lb />elect Julia Carson (D-In.), de-<lb />feated a white Republican in a<lb />majority white district, and will<lb />become the newest member of<lb />the Congressional Black Caucus<lb />in the otherwise disappointing,<lb />Republican dominated 106th<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 3)<lb /><lb />stop unfair, discriminatory hir-<lb />ing and firing practices at the<lb />Dickinson Avenue Piggly Wig-<lb />sly. Before the picket line was<lb />formed, CAR made numerous<lb />attempts to negotiate a resolu-<lb />tion to the problem. Yet, Rick<lb />Jackson, co-owner, doesn't be-<lb />lieve fire burns. Bishop Randy<lb />Royal and others asked Rick<lb />Jackson to rehire Shawann<lb />Sutton who was fired after a re-<lb />fusal to sell cigarettes to a fif-<lb />teen-year-old white girl. The<lb />white girl Ts mother stormed in-<lb />side the store and shouted racial<lb />obscenities ( oblack nigger ,<lb /> oblack bitch ) at the African-<lb />American cashiers, one of which<lb />was Mrs. Sutton.<lb /><lb />Piggly Wiggly traditionally has<lb />discriminated against its Afri-<lb />can-American customers and<lb />employees. Prior to the picket-<lb />ing, Piggly Wiggly had roughly a<lb />97% African-American clientele.<lb />Yet, our people, especially<lb />women, have been disrespected,<lb />used, and abused for too long by<lb />Piggly Wiggly. Wake up African-<lb />American sisters and brothers<lb />and smell the coffee. We must<lb />stand together and demand re-<lb />spect or we will fall asunder in<lb />defeat and shame. Let Ts become<lb />warriors for racial justice by join-<lb />ing the picket line on the battle-<lb />field of Piggly Wiggly. Every sis-<lb />ter and brother reading this ap-<lb />peal have a moral obligation to<lb />participate in the picketing until<lb />Jackson is brought to his knees.<lb />A racial or discriminatory act<lb />left unanswered and unchal-<lb />lenged may be likened to African<lb />American men and women being<lb /> obull whipped  or smashed with<lb /><lb />Staff Photo by Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />On<lb /><lb />batons, reminiscent of the gloom<lb />and dvom days of the 1890 Ts and<lb />1960's.<lb /><lb />When Jackson supports price<lb />inflation, unfair check-cashing<lb />practices, and discrimination<lb />against African-American s, the<lb />elderiy and T African-American<lb />customers become victimized.<lb />Therefore, the picketing must<lb />continue until the specific de-<lb />mands of CAR are met in their<lb />entirety. Further, a friend of mine<lb />reminded me about how cantan-<lb />kerous Piggly Wiggly can be<lb />when, in 1965, she picketed a<lb />Piggly Wiggly (in Ayden) whose<lb />management refused to hire Af-<lb />rican-Americans. Seemingly,<lb />many Piggly Wiggly stores have<lb />a predisposition clouded by acts<lb />of racial hatred and enmity to-<lb />ward African-Americans.<lb /><lb />Lately, white customers have<lb />been patronizing Jackson Ts store<lb />like never before. Awhite cus-<lb />tomer recently said that although<lb />he had not shopped at Piggly<lb />Wiggly in fifteen years, he feels<lb />obligated to keep Jackson in busi-<lb />ness. This outrageously ignorant<lb />comment evidences the urgency<lb />of CAR Ts struggle to combat those<lb />who seek to add more fuel to the<lb />raging fire of racism ignited by<lb />narrow-minded characters like<lb />Rick Jackson.<lb /><lb />Last but not least, I ask my<lb />brothers and sisters to join us<lb />(CAR) on the battlefield as we<lb />challenge the aforementioned<lb />bigotry and arrogance charac-<lb />teristic of Jackson.<lb /><lb />Together, we will carry the<lb />blood-stained banner to victory.<lb />Indeed, there is light at the end<lb />of the tunnel.<lb /><lb />\ om<lb /><lb />cial work at the University of THIS LOVELY LADY IS SISTER Angel Savage who is stands proudly by her son, Ryan, and other youngsters who were<lb />cited recently for their participation in the  oPOPS WARNER FOOTBALL BANQUET . Be carefree. Some experts<lb />believe that keeping stress under<lb />control may boost your immune<lb />system. A laboratory study con-<lb />ducted by Carnegie Mellon Uni-<lb />versity in Pittsburgh found that<lb />the lower a person Ts stress level<lb />was, the more likely she would be<lb />to fight off a cold virus.<lb /><lb />4. Keep mucous membranes<lb />moist. The air in heated rooms can<lb />dry out the tissues of your nose<lb />and throat. This in turn dries up<lb />mucus - a protective barrier<lb />against cold viruses. So humidify<lb />the air and drink lots of fluids -<lb />preferably eight glasses daily.<lb /><lb />A Certificate Or Degree From<lb />Pitt Community College<lb /><lb />Can Help You Earn Your Dream Career<lb /><lb />*®<lb /><lb />Beginning December 3, 1996 - March 5, 1997<lb /><lb />The Greenville Community<lb />Development Corporation<lb /><lb />706 W Sth Street<lb /><lb />Will Offer The Following Two (2) Curriculum Classes<lb /><lb />Keyboarding (Beginning Typing) OSC 102 04 MW 9:00-11:30 a.m.<lb />F 9:00-10:50 a.m.<lb /><lb />Professional Development (Bus 134 02) MWEF 12-12:50 will include:<lb />Physical Personality<lb />Intellectual Personality<lb />Social Personality<lb />Emotional Personality<lb />Making Better Use of Time<lb /><lb />Managing Stress<lb /><lb />Setting and Learning to fichieve Goals<lb />Develop a Strong Self Jmage<lb /><lb />Financial Assistance is Available<lb /><lb />Don't Wait--Space Is Limited<lb />Call 321-4307 For Further Information<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />~ church.<lb />4 50% seldom attended church or<lb /><lb />ni  ~Stock up on tissues: Lavish<lb />nea on people around you who<lb />are sick. A steady diet<lb />of long hours is poor mental nutri-<lb />tion. Often workaholics are as<lb />guilty as neglecting themselves as<lb />they are their families.<lb /><lb />Working through lunch hour is<lb />unhealthy, too. Just as you grow<lb />in your professional life so should<lb />you grow in your personal life.         <p>By Dr. Lenora Fulani<lb />Over the past twe. years, a se-<lb />ries of horrific events with the<lb />gravest consequences for the fu-<lb />ture of Central Africa have taken<lb />place in Rwanda and eastern<lb />Zaire.<lb /><lb />These events  " the extermi-<lb />nation of half a million people<lb />(mostly ethnic Tutsi) in Rwanda<lb />the flight of over one million<lb />(mostly ethnic Hutu) into neigh-<lb />boring Zaire, the massacres and<lb />pillaging of Zairians of Tutsi ori-<lb />gin'at the hands of Hutu militias<lb />and their allies in the Zairian<lb />army, and the recent rebellion by<lb />those Zairian Tutsis  " are pre-<lb />sented to us by the media as sim-<lb />ply cases of African tribal blood-<lb /><lb />From Page |<lb /><lb />Congress.<lb /><lb />Like former Georgia State Sen.<lb />Julian Bond during the Vietnam<lb />era, Rep. McKinney was a coura-<lb />geous opponent of rampant<lb />American militarism. Just as<lb />Bond was condemned by the<lb />Georgia legislature for his oppo-<lb />sition to the Vietnam War,<lb />McKinney was also condemned<lb />by her colleagues when she<lb />served in the State House, for<lb />her opposition to  oOperation<lb />Desert Storm,  the lopsided US<lb />war against Iraq in 1991. Her<lb />courage did not just begin with<lb />her progressive outlook toward<lb />Min Farrakhan The only sad<lb />comment on her campaign is that<lb />her own father and political men-<lb />tor, State Rep Billy McKinney |<lb />(D), was thrown over board and<lb />banned from the McKinney con-<lb />gressional cam palgn after apolo-<lb />gizing for call Mitnic}, who is<lb />Jewish,  oa racist Jew.  It wasn't<lb />his characterization of the<lb />Republi can as a racist that got<lb />Mr. McKinney in hot water with<lb />white voters; it was his use of the<lb /> oJ-word.  Of course, racial, reli-<lb />gious and ethnic stereotypes of<lb />individuals and groups are un-<lb />fair and should not be used at<lb /><lb />Linda Ward<lb />756-4911<lb /><lb />Home: 238-2474<lb /><lb />756-5411<lb /><lb />SSS<lb />a<lb /> "_ "_ "<lb />CO<lb /><lb />(<lb /><lb />c<lb />3<lb />Z, =<lb />=<lb />one,<lb />UO  <lb />ew<lb />XZ<lb />+<lb />2S<lb />nie<lb />ome,<lb /><lb />At VIP Mortgage, When Others<lb />Say "NO", We say "YES"<lb /><lb />8 Singlewides With Land -<lb />| (Refinancing)<lb /><lb />letting. But in fact, these tragic<lb />events have their origin not only<lb />in long-term tribal rivalries, but<lb />in African political struggles as<lb />well, exacerbated in many cases<lb />by foreign intervention.<lb /><lb />The most recent eruption of<lb />mass violence broke out in April 1<lb />994, after Central African leaders<lb />had brokered a fragile peace ac-<lb />cord between the Hutu-dominated<lb />government of Rwanda and the<lb />Rwandan Patriotic Front. The<lb />RPF is a rebel group made up of<lb />ethnic Tutsis whohad been driven<lb />by the Hutu government into ex-<lb />ile in neighboring Uganda a gen-<lb />eration ago.<lb /><lb />Fearing that this accord would<lb />bring about a multi-partisan gov-<lb /><lb />Victories and<lb />defeats<lb /><lb />any time, by anyone. Inthis case,<lb />now, maybe the orrant use of the<lb /> oJ word  will no longer be pun-<lb />ishable by a political death sen<lb />tence.<lb /><lb />In California, voters made two<lb />otherwise incompatible choices,<lb />voting ballot initiative measures.<lb />First, like the 1966 repall of a<lb />California fair housing law, Cali-<lb />fornians proved they never maa<lb />bigoted ballot initiative they<lb />didn't lilce, by voting to enact the<lb />California  oCivil Wrongs  mea-<lb />sure, abolishing state-supported<lb />affirmative action Then, by al-<lb />most the same margin of sup-<lb />port, Californians approved a<lb />radically-liberal initiative to le-<lb />galize marijuana use for medical<lb />treatment of certain patients. |<lb />heard a conserva tive news ob-<lb />server remark privately that<lb />Califomians were voting to  oget<lb />high and screw Black people. <lb />Go figure.<lb /><lb />All in all, this election pro-<lb />vided one big, big national<lb />congressonal victory, a couple of<lb />other smaller congressional wins<lb />for Blacks, a sad defeat, and a<lb />sad, sad national defeat of the<lb />Umoja Party-candidate in the<lb />nation Ts capital.<lb /><lb />HOME OWNERS<lb /><lb />¢ Cash for any purpose<lb /><lb />¢ Total Debt Consolidation<lb /><lb />¢ Doublewides and<lb /><lb />¢ Bank Turn Downs<lb /><lb />We say yes when other's<lb />say no:<lb /><lb />ADD SOME<lb />(ASS TO YOUR<lb /><lb />(Evening Classes Available<lb />In These Programs)<lb /><lb />Administrative Office<lb /><lb />Business Administration<lb />Business Computer Programming<lb /> ~ollege Transfer<lb /><lb />Drafting &amp; Design<lb />Early Childhood<lb />Electrical Installation<lb />Law Enforcement<lb /><lb />Medical Office<lb />Microcomputer Systems<lb /><lb />Register December 2<lb />946-6194 or 1-800-446-8429<lb /><lb />AN equal opporunity/attiimative action insttuton<lb /><lb />a a ma my 8 ett nee<lb /><lb />Ask Us About Our Year<lb />Round Vacation<lb /><lb />Accounting<lb /><lb />Automotive<lb /><lb />Machinist<lb /><lb />Pre-ADN<lb />Pre-LPN<lb />Pre-MLT<lb />Social Service<lb />Welding<lb /><lb />we rene<lb /><lb />ernment, in which power would<lb />he shared between Hutu and<lb />Tutsi, the Hutu extremist move-<lb />ment (which controlled the gov-<lb />ernment infrastructure and the<lb />Rwandan army, and an extensive<lb />network of local lynch-mobs called<lb />the Interahamwe) began system-<lb />atically exterminating their fel-<lb />low Rwandans. They directed<lb />their genocidal campaign not only<lb />against the Tutsis, but also<lb />against Hutus who would not join<lb />them in the slaughter.<lb /><lb />In the space of three months, at<lb />least 500,000 (and perhaps as<lb />many as 750,000) people were<lb />murdered. The killing of the Tutsi<lb /><lb />and their Hutu allies only abated:<lb /><lb />when the Rwandan Patriotic<lb />Front launched a major offensive,<lb />driving the armies and militias of<lb />the Hutu extremist regime into<lb />the west of Rwanda, near the Zaire<lb />border.<lb /><lb />By this time the French, who<lb />had been supplying military as-<lb />sistance to the extremist Hutu<lb />regime up to the eve of the massa-<lb />cre, sought and obtained approval<lb />from the United Nations Security<lb />Council to send a military fo rce to<lb />Rwanda on a  ohumanitarian mis-<lb />sion. <lb /><lb />The French intervention came<lb />too late to stop the murder of the<lb />Tutsi, but provided a shield be-<lb />hind which the Hutu military re-<lb />treated from the advancing RPF<lb />and escaped into Zaire. As they<lb />retreated, the Hutu militias ter-<lb />rorized tens of thousands of Hutu<lb />civilians into fleeing with them.<lb /><lb />The arrival of the Hutu refu-,<lb />gees and their military escort in<lb />Zaire provided Zaire Ts discredited<lb />dictator, Mobuhl Sese Seko, with<lb />a new lease on political life. To<lb />meet the needs of 1.5 million refu-<lb />gees dying of cholera, starvation,<lb />and exposure the international<lb />community had to deal with<lb />Mobutu, who they had begun to<lb />diplomatically to ice out because<lb />of his refusal to cede power to a<lb />democratic transitional<lb />goverment.<lb /><lb />Mobutu  oallowed  foreign troops<lb />to come into Zaire to support the<lb />logistics of bringing clean water,<lb />shelter, food and medical supplies<lb />to refugees. His corrupt army and<lb />officials demanded bribes from<lb />relief organizations to land their<lb />cargo planes, looted supplies and<lb />equipment from them, and shook<lb />down terrified refugees for every-<lb />thing they owned before letting<lb />them across the border.<lb /><lb />Mobutu had always been closely<lb />allied with the Hutu extremist<lb />regime, and thus his government<lb />did not disclaim the remnants of<lb />the Hutu militias, or separate the<lb />murderous militia members from<lb />innocent civilians. On the con-<lb />trary, Hutu militias controlled the<lb />camps and prevented civilians<lb />from repatriating, and used the<lb />camps as staging points to attack<lb />the new RPF governments in<lb />Rwanda. For two years these<lb />camps festered, absorbing $1 mil-<lb />lion a day in foreign assistance,<lb />and benefiting no one except<lb />Mobutu, the criminal clique that<lb />rules that part of Zaire. and the<lb /><lb />THE  oM"-VOICE- WEEK OF NOVEMBER 22 - DEC<lb /><lb />What is behind the refugee crisis in Zaire? The<lb />nominal leader of this group is<lb />Laurent Kabila, who has fought<lb />Mobutu for 30 years.<lb /><lb />In three weeks Kabila forces<lb />broke up the camps, driving both<lb />the Hutu militias and the Zairian<lb />hoops away from the border zone,<lb />and seizing the area Ts three main<lb />cities. (Unfortunately, many Hutu<lb />refugees fled with the troops, who<lb />in some cases used these inno-<lb />cents as human shields.) This ac-<lb />tion has created a new humani-<lb />tarian emergency, but it has also<lb />radically changed the political<lb />situation on the ground.<lb /><lb />Kabila has called on all Zairians<lb />to resist Mobutu provocation to<lb />ethnic strife, and to instead join<lb /><lb />violence and corruption of the<lb />Mobuhl regime. He has declared<lb />a unilateral ceasefire, to facili-<lb />tate the entry of relief organiza-<lb />tions, and has said his army has<lb />no objections to an international<lb />force being deployed to free the<lb />refugees from their criminal cap-<lb />tors. :<lb /><lb />Meanwhile, President Clinton<lb />has approved the deployment of<lb />thousands of U.S. troops as part<lb />of a multi-lateral force.
