The<lb />article stated that the Nicara-<lb />guans raised millions of dollars<lb />for the CIATs contra army in<lb />Nicaraga by selling large quan-<lb />tities of cocaine to a South Cen-<lb />tral Los Angeles dope pusher who<lb />converted it into crack. The im-<lb />plication was that the CIA was<lb />aware of a scheme to introduce<lb />crack cocaine to raise money to<lb />fight communism while devas-<lb />tating American communities.<lb /><lb />The CLA denies any involve-<lb />ment and mainstream news or-<lb />ganizations such as<lb />TheWashington Post and The Los<lb />Angeles Times reported that<lb />there is no evidence to support a<lb />CIA role or a master plan to<lb />traffic drugs in South Central<lb />Los Angeles in 1983.<lb /><lb />However, PBS commentator<lb />Tony Brown examines the<lb />charges and the relationship be-<lb />tween the federal government<lb />and Black America within a<lb />broader historical framework. oIf<lb />the allegations about a CIA-spon-<lb />sored crack-cocaine epidemic<lb /><lb />that wrecked entire Black com-<lb />munities in the 80s and 90s are<lb />true, it could represent the con-<lb />tinuation of a government policy<lb />that began in 1917,? says Tony<lb />Brown.<lb /><lb />Using documentation that he<lb />gathered for his book, Black Lies,<lb />White Lies: The Truth According<lb />To Tony Brown (William Mor-<lb />row &amp; Company), Brown exam-<lb />ines the Military Intelligence<lb />DivisionTs campaign against<lb />Black America during WWI. This<lb />domestic spy network was the<lb />largest ever assembled in a free<lb />country.<lb /><lb />It is documented that this gov-<lb />ernment intelligence against<lb />Blacks continued into the 1960s,<lb />and perhaps beyond. Brown<lb />noted that when the spy network<lb />was organized in 1917, Presi-<lb />dent Woodrow Wilson and the<lb />government assumed that be-<lb />cause Blacks were discriminated<lb />against, they would not be loyal<lb />to America during times of war.<lb />This domestic intelligence opera-<lb />tion served as a forerunner of the<lb />COINTELPRO FBI-led counter-<lb />insurgency program of the 1960s,<lb />and perhaps others. Brown ex-<lb />amines the connection between<lb />the ArmyTs spy network and the<lb />U. S. intelligence communityTs<lb />surveillance of Malcolm X and<lb />Martin Luther King, Jr. He re-<lb />ports that military leaders mobi-<lb />lized and dispatched troops in-<lb />cluding snipers, and scouted 124<lb />cities as war zones in prepara-<lb />tion for an outbreak of war with<lb />Black America, led by Martin<lb />Luther King, in April 1968, the<lb />month King was assassinated.<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 3)<lb /><lb />arrests of these charged with<lb />cross-burnings.<lb /><lb />Recently, four North Carolina<lb />men were charged with burning<lb />two crosses on the lawn ofa home<lb />occupied by a racially mixed<lb />couple near Waynesville, N.C.,<lb />the Justice Department reports.<lb /><lb />This brings the number of cases<lb />stemmingfrom cross-burn ing in-<lb />cidents to more than 20, involv-<lb />ing some 30 defendants.<lb /><lb />The men charged in the<lb />Waynesville arrests - Leonard<lb />Haynes, Martin King, Alfred<lb />Smith and Eugene Smith - face<lb />three count indictments, includ-<lb />ing violations of federal criminal<lb />civil rights laws.<lb /><lb />The four men, the indictment<lb />charges, conspired to burn across<lb />in front of a trailer located in a<lb />rural area and occupied by Gor-<lb />don Cullins and Hazel Annette,<lb />a mixed-race couple.<lb /><lb />According to Deval Patrick as-<lb />sistant attorney general for civil<lb />rights, othe case underscores our<lb />commitment to investigat ing<lb />these crimes until they are<lb />solved,? he said. oHateful acts<lb />like cross burnings strike at the<lb />heart of the communityand must<lb /><lb />FROM THE'M' VOICE ARCHIVES. ..For a "blast from the<lb /><lb />be stopped.?<lb /><lb />Count one of the indictment<lb />charges the four with conspiring<lb />to violate civil rights statutes,<lb />Count two charges that the de-<lb />fendants used force or threat of<lb />Force against individuals<lb />exerising their right to occupy a<lb />dwelling, and count three<lb />charges the four with using fire<lb />tocommita felony. ZAMGBA BROWNE<lb />Amsterdam News Staff<lb /><lb />Highly inflammatory racial<lb />epithets attributed to senior ex<lb />ecutives at oil giant Texaco Com<lb />pany were sharply denounced<lb />Tuesday by African-American<lb />leaders across the country, many<lb />of whom called for swift disci-<lb />plinary action.<lb /><lb />Even Roy Innis, executive of<lb />the Congress of Racial Equality,<lb />an ultra-conservative whose<lb />views are often diametrically<lb />opposed to those of mainstream<lb />African-American leaders, ex-<lb />pressed outrage.<lb /><lb />Innis described the Texaco ex-<lb />ecutives as a obunch of uncivi-<lb />lized savages? who have seriously<lb />oendangered attempts in the<lb />American society to ~do the right<lb />thingT about the countryTs racial<lb />problem.?<lb /><lb />However, Innis said he be-<lb />lieved the incident at Texaco rep-<lb />resents a small minority in the<lb />business community. He insists<lb />that the osavage racist? elements<lb />at Texaco be quickly identified<lb />and uprooted.<lb /><lb />The Rev. Al Sharpton said the<lb />remarks reflect a spirit of ocorpo-<lb />rate racism? that is ap parently<lb />supported by major heads at<lb />Texaco. oIf people can make these<lb />kinds of remarks and not be ter-<lb />minated or disciplined,? he de-<lb />clared, othen what will show us<lb />there is a fairer policy in con-<lb />tracts, jobs, and other things that<lb />relate to our communities when<lb />we are con sumers of their prod-<lb />ucts?? said Sharpton. oWe must<lb />stop paying to be respected,? he<lb />added.<lb /><lb />State Sen. <p>hal<lb /><lb />Letter to the Editor<lb /><lb />Letter to the editor<lb /><lb />Patrick Nelson<lb /><lb />P.O. Box 7005<lb />Greenville, NC 27835<lb />November 08, 1996<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice, Inc.<lb />P.O. Box 8361<lb />Greenville, NC 27835<lb /><lb />First I'd like to commend the<lb />M Voice for providing many valu-<lb />able services to the community. I<lb />well remember several years ago<lb />reading of a young girl stricken<lb />with leukemia. The Lord laid it<lb />upon my heart to try and help<lb />this girl and her family. With the<lb />help of a number of Christian<lb />people from different racial and<lb />denominational backgrounds, I<lb />organized a fund raiser on behalf<lb />of the family, providing much<lb />needed funds at Christmas. Had<lb />it not been for the M Voice, I<lb />never would have known of this<lb />need.<lb /><lb />I do feel compelled to take is-<lb />sue with statements made in the<lb />October 31-November 6 edition<lb />regarding Sen. Jesse Helms. The<lb />article begins by criticizing Sen.<lb />Helms for his government pen-<lb />sion. Ill concede that the retire-<lb />ment benefits of a U.S. Senator<lb />are lucrative to say the least.<lb />But to point the finger of blame<lb />at Helms is unfair. It is the same<lb />pension program that over 500<lb />members of Congress participate<lb />in, as well as thousands of other<lb />government officials. And gen-<lb />erous government pension plans<lb />were in place long before Helms<lb />took office in 1972. To criticize<lb />him for his retirement plan with-<lb />out criticizing all other partici-<lb />pants is inconsistent.<lb /><lb />The article also accuses Helms<lb />of proposing to disrnantle Social<lb /><lb />' Security. As I recall, he wasnTt<lb /><lb />calling for dismantlement, but<lb />privatization, measures that<lb />would allow individuals differ-<lb />ent options as to how their money<lb />is invested. Privatization of So-<lb />cial Security funds would also<lb />protect citizensT funds from poli-<lb />ticians who are notorious for raid-<lb />ing the Social Security Trust<lb /><lb />in My Re-election to the<lb />US House of Representatives<lb />First Congressional District<lb /><lb />Fund to fund all of their pet<lb />projects.<lb /><lb />Under the current system,<lb />7.5% of employeesT earnings go<lb />into the Trust Fund. This is<lb />matched by a 7.5% contribution<lb />by the employer. Self-employed<lb />people like myself must pay the<lb />entire 15% tax themselves. I say<lb />tax because participation is not<lb />optional, itTs mandatory. Every<lb />year I am forced to give 15% of<lb />my earnings to the federal gov-<lb />ernment in addition to federal<lb />income tax, federal gas tax, capi-<lb />tal gains tax, etc.<lb /><lb />Unless drastic changes are<lb />made in the current system the<lb />Social Security Trust Fund will<lb />be broke in 20"30 years, mak-<lb />ing the net return on my 15%<lb />contribution zero. Under HelmsT<lb />plan, current retirees would be<lb />protected and future retirees like<lb />myself would be free to invest<lb />my money where 1 please. If par-<lb />ticipation in the current system<lb />was ever made an option rather<lb />than a necessity, I would opt out<lb />without hesitation.<lb /><lb />If I were free to invest 15% of<lb />my income on my own, I would<lb />retire a millionaire. As it now<lb />stands 1 am barely able to invest<lb />5% of my earnings toward retire-<lb />ment because after I pay my bills<lb />and taxes, there is very little<lb />money left over. Regardless of<lb />what one thinks of Jesse HelmsT<lb />positions, his Social Security pro-<lb />posal was one position that made<lb />sense.<lb /><lb />The article writer (who, like so<lb />many other M Voice writers re-<lb />mained anonymous) then ac-<lb />cused Helms of otrying to cut<lb />$270 billion from the heart? of<lb />medicare. Excuse me for sound-<lb />ing brutally harsh, but that state-<lb />ment was an outright distortiom<lb />Helms supported cuts in the<lb />growth rate of medicare, not di-<lb />rect cuts in medicare. Like the<lb />Social Security FTund, the Medi-<lb />care Trust Fund is scheduled for<lb />insolvency unless steps are<lb />taken. Both of my parents are on<lb />Medicare, and | appreciate the<lb />efforts of anyone, Democrat or<lb />Republican, who attempts tosave<lb />the program.<lb /><lb />Interestingly, an article ap-<lb />peared in the same issue of The<lb /><lb />M Voice in which Helms oppo-<lb />nent, Harvey Gantt, was lauded<lb />for his positions. Again the writer<lb />remained anonymous. It is not<lb />my desire to take issue with the<lb />accolades heaped upon Mr.<lb />Gantt. Harvey Gantt is without<lb />a doubt a great American suc-<lb />cess story. I certainly feel that he<lb />is a man of character and integ-<lb />rity. I must, however, take strong<lb />issue with a statement made in<lb />the article. In one paragraph of<lb />the article entitled oEqual Pay<lb /><lb />for Women?, the writer stated |<lb /><lb />that women who sell insurance<lb />are paid less than men who do<lb />the same job. I have been in the<lb />insurance business for a number<lb />of years and ITve dealt with many<lb />different insurance companies.<lb />Never have 1 seen different com-<lb />mission structure for men and<lb />women. ~he insurance business<lb />is the most fair and equitable<lb />business 1 know of. Everyone,<lb />regardless of race, creed or gen-<lb />der is paid the same percentage<lb />based on his or her individual<lb />sales. This wonderful business<lb />provides equal opportunities to<lb />all people willing to work and<lb />make things happen.<lb /><lb />The purpose of my letter is<lb />neither to endorse nor repudiate<lb />Jesse Helms. Since the writer of<lb />both the aforementioned M Voice<lb />articles was not revealed, I must<lb />conclude that the expressed com-<lb />ments are the opinion of the M<lb />Voice. If that is indeed the case,<lb />I must say I am disappointed.<lb /><lb />Again, let me reiterate my ap-<lb />preciation for all the good the M<lb />Voice does For the sake of fair-<lb />ness, I would encourage you to<lb />do careful research before pub-<lb />lishing articles that are critical<lb />of others. I further recognize that<lb />the M Voice is a private entity,<lb />thus yoll have no legal obligation<lb />to publish my letter. But I do feel<lb />that publication would make a<lb />strong statement for healthy<lb />dialouge, which is all too often a<lb />missing ingredient in modern<lb />journalism.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />Patrick Nelson<lb /><lb />P.O. Nobody at the center gave<lb />me any type of instruction on the<lb />medication that was given to me<lb />while I was in the Detox Center<lb />or when I was released. When I<lb />was in the Detox Center I was<lb />scared, confused, and stressed<lb />out. I thought the medicine was<lb />a sedative, something to help me<lb />sleep. I did ask the fourth day<lb />the name of the specific pill, be-<lb />cause it looked unusual in shape<lb />and color. The nurse stated that<lb />it was for my seizures. So, I went<lb />ahead and took the pill, thinking<lb />that everything was okay. Two<lb />days later on February 01, 1995,<lb />I was<lb /><lb />sitting at home watching TV<lb />that night between 8/9 pm, so I<lb />decided to go down to the store<lb /><lb />Course for<lb />older<lb />drivers<lb />offered at<lb />PCMH<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE"Pitt County<lb />Memorial Hospital and the Ameri-<lb />can Association of Retired Persons<lb />are teaming up to offer a 55 Alive/<lb />Mature driving program. However, some schools are still<lb />experiencing healthy enrollments. The reason -<lb />have successfully isolated key markets that have been<lb />proven to deliver students. And if you are looking for |<lb />such a market, then WTOW is what you need<lb />HereTs why.<lb /><lb />According to Simmons Market Research Bureau<lb />(1996), 19.9% of all adults have graduated from college.<lb />However, when you look at our audience, that number<lb /><lb />they<lb /><lb />jumps to 26.9%,<lb />listeners are 35% more likely than people in general to<lb />have college educations.<lb /><lb />Furthermore, WTOW listeners are 24% more<lb />likely than average adults to have seventeen-year old<lb />children living at home. Our audience also ranks 34%<lb />| higher when it comes to having graduate degrees.<lb /><lb />Our recommendation is simple.<lb />funds are scarce. When it comes to college recruitment,<lb />the smart money is on WTOW.<lb /><lb />This means that WTOW<lb /><lb />Time is short, and<lb /><lb />WTOW 1320 AM<lb /><lb />Call 919-975-1320<lb /><lb />and purchase 2 - 40 ozs. of beer:<lb />By the time I almost completed<lb />the 2nd beer, I started feeling<lb />funny, my vision got blurry, and<lb />my body started feeling tight<lb />Immediatly I grabbed the phone<lb />and phoned my sister, by this<lb />time, my speech became slurred<lb /><lb />My sister called the police. By<lb />the time the police got to my<lb />house I was unconscious laying<lb />on the living room floor. Briefly I<lb />came conscious for a moment.<lb />This moment was critical for me.<lb />This gave me a chance to raise<lb />my arm and unlock the door.<lb />From this point I do not remem-<lb />ber anything else. I heard the<lb />policeman calling out my name,<lb />oMs. Peartree - are you alright??<lb />By then, I was rushed to Beau-<lb />fort County Community Hospi-<lb />tal. Briefly I came conscious<lb />again. I felt a tube going down<lb />my throat, and I was gasping for<lb />air, (what was happening here<lb />was that I was given a gastric<lb />larage). This information was<lb />never mentioned to my family or<lb />me. I found out the truth 4<lb />months later. My niece arrived<lb />at the hospital to check on and<lb />see how I was doing, by this time<lb />the nurses ran her out. She said<lb />that she saw black stuff all over<lb />me, the bed, and the floor. I was<lb />dumbfounded by what kind of<lb />black stuff, and found out that<lb />they were pumping the pills out<lb />of my system that was prescribed<lb />to me from the Tideland Detox<lb />Center. The black stuff my niece<lb />saw all over me, was charcoal.<lb />This is only used in emergency<lb />situations whereas a person has<lb />been poisoned.
