He<lb />assailed a number of small na<lb />tions who have succumbed to<lb />spending more money on arms<lb />than on food and education. Even<lb />Saudi Arabia was lashed.<lb /><lb /> ~Tm not against Saudi Arabia, ?<lb />he said,  obut [have to rebuke you<lb />when you're wrong. ?<lb /><lb />Rev. Al Sharpton peppered<lb />his remarks with allusions to his<lb />possible mayoral run.  oLet me<lb />welcome you as the future mayor<lb />of New York City, ? Sharpton he-<lb /><lb />Bill Clinton's way ahead.<lb /><lb />How Does Black America<lb />get ahead, too?<lb /><lb />By: Dr. Lenora B. Fulani<lb /><lb />ill Clinton continues to pull<lb />ahead in the polls. He Ts at 52%<lb />and Bob Dole is lagging further<lb />and further behind.<lb /><lb />With their eye on the scope of<lb /><lb />that lead, some political forces<lb />are figure out now to take advan-<lb />tage of the situation for differing<lb />agendas.<lb /><lb />Take America Ts liberal/left for<lb />example. Here I Tm referencing<lb />labor, feminist, enviromnentalist<lb />and socialist activists and<lb />svmpathizers. This fairly small,<lb />but vocal constituency has been<lb />upset about the Democratic<lb />Party Ts drift to the right for some<lb />time. The Tve wanted to make a<lb />move to establish their political<lb />independence, to exert the po-<lb />litical clout of the constituencies<lb />to which they relate (trade<lb />unions, women, students, etc.)<lb />by voting for independents, long<lb /><lb />acknowledged as the best way to<lb /><lb />overcome the enormous power of<lb /><lb />the special interest-controlled<lb />two parties. However, the've held<lb />back from voting independent in<lb />the past for fear of costing a<lb />Democrat the election and elect-<lb />ing a Republican in a three way<lb />race. In the Black community,<lb />were all very familiar with this<lb />argument. It Ts the one Jesse Jack-<lb />son and other Black leaders used<lb />to keep you from voting for me<lb />when [ ran for President as an<lb />independent in 1988 and 1992.<lb />Now, however, with Clinton so<lb />far ahead and with Dole slipping<lb />so substantially, there is no fear<lb />that a defection from the Demo-<lb />cratic Party to an independent<lb />presidential candidate will throw<lb />the election to the Republicans<lb />This gives these left activist vot-<lb />ers room to maneuver and fi-<lb />nally make their third party<lb /><lb />VERNON ROBINSON, CANDIDATE FOR STATE Superintendent of Public Instruction,<lb /><lb />gan, to rousing applause.  oI prom-<lb />ise that our accommodations will<lb />he better next time. ? This was<lb />about as close as any of the major<lb />speakers came to mentioning the<lb />mayor. Farrakhan left Mayor<lb />Giuliani's name off his thank-<lb />you list.<lb /><lb />Sharpton told the crowd that<lb />New York City is the only city in<lb />the country where  oyou can Tt tell<lb />the cops from the robbers, ? he<lb />roared. On the issue of crime,<lb />Sharpton said that  ocrime is<lb />down because love is up, hope is<lb />up. We lowered the crime rate<lb />when we lifted ourselves up. ?<lb /><lb />During his speech, Sharpton<lb />was joined at the podium by<lb />members of the families of An-<lb />thony Baez and Anthony Rosario,<lb />both killed by the police. Iris<lb />aez, Anthony Ts mother, insisted<lb />that  owe mothers must stand<lb /><lb />ogether. We have had enough of<lb />ros killing. ?<lb /><lb />One of the event Ts most rivet-<lb />ing moments occurred when Rev.<lb />Benjamin Chavis shared the po-<lb />dium with his wife, Martha, who<lb />translated his remarks into<lb />spanish. The pair were particu-<lb /><lb /> ~arly spirited in their chant of<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 2)<lb /><lb />statement. Thus, numerous left<lb />commentators and analysts are<lb />urging a vote for an independent<lb />presidential candidate  " in most<lb />cases for the Green Party candi-<lb />date Ralph Nader, who is on the<lb />ballot in about 20 states. I think<lb />this could help propel this mainly<lb />white liberal constituency into a<lb />more influential role in local and<lb />national politics and into a posi-<lb />tion to coalesce with other inde-<lb />pendents in the building of a<lb />major national third party .<lb />The right has a response to the<lb />Clinton lead, too. Here I refer to<lb />a major push by the Republicall<lb />arty to seek Black votes, votes<lb />which it ignores on the grounds<lb />that 1) they normally don Tt need<lb />them and 2) they normally can't<lb />get them.<lb />(ase in point is the South,<lb />where Black voters could be the<lb />(Continued on page 2)<lb /><lb />meets with the new president of Livingstone College, Dr. Bennett Joiner, at a banquet in Dr.<lb /><lb />Joiner's honor.<lb /><lb />Eastern North Carolina's<lb />Minority Voice<lb /><lb />What You See Is What You Get, What<lb />You Read Is What You Know &amp; Save<lb /><lb />AS THOUSANDS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE UNITED NATIONS to hear the Honorable<lb />Louis Farrakhan, local brothers and sisters gathered to hear him speak and to mark "World<lb />Day Of Atonement II" (The anniversary of the "Million Man March" in Washington, D.C. on<lb />October 16, 1995). That's un-<lb />American. ? Gore blasted<lb />Farrakhan for meeting with<lb />world leaders T including<lb />Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam<lb />Hussein and Fidel Castro.<lb /><lb />When asked to comment on<lb />Gore Ts remarks Farrakhan<lb />smiled and shook his head and<lb />said,  oHe [Gore] ought to be<lb />ashamed of himself. I am a free<lb />man. And just because I meet<lb />with various heads of state does<lb />not mean that I endorse their<lb />views or go along witll all their<lb />positions. ?<lb /><lb />When asked on  oMeet the<lb />Press ? whether Farrakhan Ts<lb />passport should be revoked, Gore<lb />backed away from that stance,<lb />maintaining it was too close to<lb />the election to make such a com<lb />ment. Gore noted that an inves<lb />tigation into Farrakhan Ts trav<lb />els abroad to openly hostile coun<lb />tries was underway. He said it<lb />would be improper to politicize<lb />the matter by calling for revoca<lb />tion of Farrakhan Ts passport in<lb />the middle of the presidential<lb />campaign, but quickly added that<lb />there was  ono hesitancy based<lb />on fear of alienating Mr.<lb />Farrakhan. ?<lb /><lb />During the 1950s actor/singer<lb />Paul Robeson was asked to sing<lb />in Russia. When returned to the<lb />States his passport was revoked<lb /><lb />and for several years he could<lb />not get work because he was boy<lb />cotted and he could not travel.<lb />The same thing was done to<lb />W.E.B. DuBois duringthe 1950s.<lb /><lb />Farrakhan maintained he<lb />wants to meet with Jewish lead-<lb />ers while in New York for his<lb />United Nations Day of Atone-<lb />ment Oct. 16. He said that if<lb />Jewbih leaders can meet with<lb />Yasser Arafat, they should be<lb />able to sit down and talk with<lb />him if they can show him where<lb /><lb />he is wrong, he will concede it.<lb /><lb />Tbe Nation of Islam held its<lb />U.N. Day of Atonement one year<lb />after the Million Man March to<lb />Washington in 1995. Farrakhan<lb />said he planned to broadcast by<lb />satellite his UWorld Day of Atone<lb />ment ? rally at the United Na-<lb />tions Plaza all over the world<lb />and many friends around the<lb />world would tune in.<lb /><lb />Appearing on CNN Ts  oLate Edi-<lb />tion ? program, Farrakhan de-<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 2)<lb /><lb />A step toward self-<lb /><lb />reliance<lb /><lb />(PART IV)<lb />Reverend Mark C. Olds<lb /><lb />Recently, on avery cold, snowy<lb />Cleveland January evening, I<lb />hurried across the campus of<lb />Case Western Reserve Univer-<lb />sity. My torrid week of graduate<lb />studies had concluded (three con-<lb />secutive nights per week/plus a<lb />full time day job/plus ministry<lb />duties). My stride was swift as<lb />the humming of TThank God Its<lb />Thursday Night ? filtered my<lb />mind.<lb /><lb />My residence is in the inner<lb />city of Cleveland by choice. My<lb />need and love to be with my<lb />people are both a personal philo-<lb />sophic and romancist compas-<lb />sion. My regular route from the<lb />campus takes me onto Stokes<lb />Boulevard. This street sign often<lb />triggers a meditation of the<lb />mother who nurtured, loved and<lb />taught two young inner city<lb />brothers the virtue of positive<lb />living (one became an ambassa-<lb />dor, a judge, mayor; the other a<lb /><lb />congressman and senior states-<lb />man). These accomplishments<lb />are great testimonies for young<lb />men from an urban housing<lb />project. As my homeward jour-<lb />ney took me deeper into the Afri-<lb />can American community, the<lb />flashing blue lights of a police<lb />cruiser filled my rearview mir-<lb />ror. Like a mini-parade, several<lb />cars made their way to the curb.<lb />| was the third car in the halting<lb />processional.<lb /><lb />Upon coming to a complete<lb />stop, it became very clear that<lb />my vehicle was the attention of<lb />this law enforcement officer Ts<lb />pursuit. The drivers in the cars<lb />in front of me suddenly acceler-<lb />ated and returned to the traffic<lb />flow. I was left alone as the pa-<lb />rade resumed without my par-<lb />ticipation. The officer asked for<lb />and received my driver Ts license.<lb />He announced that I was speed-<lb />ing..           <lb />swing vote in a number of key<lb />Congressional races, The Repub-<lb />licans see two, factors they hope<lb />- totum to their advantage. First,<lb />_ Black voters did not tum out in<lb />large numbers for Democratic<lb />Congressional candidates in<lb />1994. indicating growing Black<lb />disillusionment with the Demo-<lb />crats'(and leading the Demo-<lb />cratic Party to blame us for the<lb />Republican landslide). Second,<lb />Bill Clinton has been so success-<lb />ful in winning conservative white<lb />voters to the Democratic Party,<lb />by v irtue of their overt and co-<lb />vert racism, that the Republi-<lb />cans think they have a shot at<lb />(not to mention a need to) court<lb />Black voters. In some of the Con-<lb />gressional districts where the<lb />contest is between two white can-<lb />didates, Blacks make up as much<lb />as 35% of the population. If the<lb />Republicans pick up even 20-25%<lb />of the Black vote they can win<lb />some of these seats. Thus, the<lb />- Republicans are busy making a<lb />pitch for us. Of course, trying to<lb />project the Republican Party, as<lb />aparty of diversity and inclusion<lb />is a little like trying to convince<lb />the world that Israeli Prime Min-<lb />ister Benjamin Netanyahu re-<lb />ally wants to work things out<lb />with the Palestinians. But the<lb />point here is that politicians see<lb />the Black vote as being  oin play ?<lb /> " to use the language of finan-<lb />cial markets. The question for us<lb />is whether we will be able to cash<lb />in on the situation.<lb /><lb />For us, the Clinton lead is a<lb />golden opportunity. In 1922,<lb />W.E.B. DuBois said,  oMay God<lb />write us down as asses if ever<lb />again we are found putting our<lb />trust in either the Republican or<lb />the Democratic Parties. ? I would<lb />add, now that it Ts 75 years later<lb />and we surely have been written<lb />down as asses: May God write us<lb />down as idiots if we don Tt grab<lb />the opportunity ee have before<lb />us this year.<lb /><lb />In 1992, we gave Bill Clinton<lb />83% of our vote. Some of us be-<lb />lieve  "I am among them  " that<lb />he deserves not a single Black<lb />vote in 1996, based on his record,<lb />no matter the consequences. Oth-<lb />ers, however, remain concerned<lb />about the  oconsequences ?  "<lb />namely, helping the Republicans.<lb />That is why Jesse Jackson is still<lb />telling you to vote for the Demo-<lb /><lb />cratic Party . But this year, there<lb />are no consequences. Clinton is<lb />too far ahead. Rev. Jackson is<lb />mistaken (or misleading you).<lb /><lb />If 20% of the Black vote went<lb />independent this year, we'd set<lb />the terms of our political interac-<lb />tions, rather than trailing after<lb />power. I am urging that this in-<lb />dependent vote go to Ross Perot<lb />and the Reform Party . I make<lb />this choice for two reasons. One,<lb />I believe that Mr. Perot Ts focus<lb />on democracy and fiscal reform<lb />is the best route to invigorating<lb />our economy and providing vi-<lb />able job opportunities for all<lb />Americans, including most espe-<lb />cially African Americans But<lb />there is a second reason that I<lb />urge Black America to vote for<lb />Perot and it has nothing to do<lb />with Perot. It has to do with<lb />using your vote to create a new<lb />political party in America  " the<lb />Reform Party.<lb /><lb />The significance of the vote for<lb />Perot this year is that it will<lb />establish the Reform Party as a<lb />legally recognized party in many<lb />states and place it on a footing<lb />that will make it competitive with<lb />the Democrats and Republicans<lb />over the long term. This is a<lb />certainly The unanswered ques-<lb />tion is where that vote comes<lb />from. In 1992, 19 million white<lb />Americans voted for Perot and<lb />became the most sought after<lb />voting bloc in America. We know<lb />that the pro-democracy anti-Big<lb />Govemment white voter will be<lb />in the Reform Party and will bea<lb />substantial influence in it. I want<lb />to make sure, as this party comes<lb />into existence and reshapes<lb />American politics, that Black<lb />America is substantially repre-<lb />sented there and becomes a ma-<lb />jor element of the Reform Party<lb />coalition.<lb /><lb />In 1964, Malcolm X said:  oYou<lb />put the Democrats first and the<lb />Democrats put you last. ? He was<lb />right. He Ts still right. Shouldn Tt<lb />1996 be the year we at least put<lb />the Democrats second and put<lb />ourselves first?<lb /><lb />Lenora B. Fulani twice ran for<lb />President of the U.S. as an inde-<lb />pendent, making history in 1988<lb />when she became the first woman<lb />and African-American to get on<lb />the ballot in all fifty states. There<lb />was a round of hoots and boos,<lb />but Chavis interrupted the cat-<lb />calls with a reminder that  othis<lb />was a day of atonement for all! ?<lb /><lb />A stirring ovation greeted<lb />Winnie Mandela when she<lb />mounted the makeshift stage,<lb />arrayed in a long white caftan.<lb />Chavis advised the listeners that<lb />Ms. Mandela was not allowed to<lb />speak because of restrictions<lb />imposed by the South African<lb />government. Nevertheless,<lb />through a spokesperson, her<lb />words reached the cheering<lb />throng.<lb /><lb /> oAtonement is a process, ?<lb />Mandela said, aand sometimes<lb />itis painful. My future cannot be<lb />clear until I Tve conquered my<lb />past. ?<lb /><lb />Among those in attendance<lb />were jazz great Lionel Hampton,<lb />Charles Oakley, Herb Williams<lb />and John Starks of the New York<lb />Knicks, film director Spike Lee,<lb />attorney Alton Maddox, and com-<lb />mentator Bob Law.<lb /><lb />There is no way to deter mine<lb />how many huddled in the streets<lb />in the shadow of the United Na-<lb />tions Building, but if the esti-<lb />mate is conducted as it was a<lb />year ago, then we can expect an<lb />undercount. But as we said last<lb />year, itisnot about the numbers;<lb />it Ts about the .qpirit that reso-<lb />nated from one spectator to the<lb />other, as if they were comforted<lb />by being in close proximity to a<lb />caring brother or sister.<lb /><lb />Clearly, the watchmen that<lb />Farrakhan believed are so nec<lb />essary if we are to avoid the<lb />comingwarofArmageddonwere<lb />on hand and prepared to deal<lb />with the impending doom.<lb /><lb />{<lb /><lb />Ogee roe<lb /><lb />PER oe hae aes<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />| nat Page<lb /><lb />without the mini-parade also<lb />being guilty.<lb /><lb />I inquired of the officer (as he<lb />presented the speeding citation<lb />and as a side note, a no seat belt<lb />mandatory $50 fine),  owhy are<lb />you not chasing drug dealers?<lb />Why did you stop me? ? Futile<lb />conversation as I sat at 116th<lb />Street and Parkhill. I knew the<lb />answer. I was an African Ameri-<lb />can male, cruising through one<lb /><lb />of Cleveland Ts high drug traffic<lb /><lb />districts. Also, I had on a leather<lb />hat pulled down (it was a cold<lb />night) and the collar of my leather<lb />coat pulled up (my bones were<lb />still chilled from the walk across<lb />the campus). I was probably<lb />guilty of rhythmic head bobbing<lb />as Rance Allen jammed  oAn<lb />Awesome God ? on the cassette.<lb />My car (a Honda, nothing fancy<lb />-italso matters little, ifmy money<lb />for transportation ends up in a<lb />suburb of Tokyo or Detroit) has a<lb />cellular telephone antenna. All<lb />these add up to a stereotypical<lb />inner city drug suspect.<lb /><lb />I was angered by my thoughts<lb />and the process. Although my<lb />eyes were not observing the<lb />speedometer, I was sure that the<lb />posted speed limit had not been<lb />exceeded. My immediate deci-<lb />sion was to go to court rather<lb />than mail in an excessive fine.<lb /><lb />I discovered at the Justice Cen-<lb />ter that 70 per cent (I counted<lb />heads and conducted the math)<lb />of the people (50 cases) in traffic<lb />court were African Americans.<lb />This new tool in the war on drugs,<lb />arresting and ticketing motor-<lb />ists in high drug districts was<lb />doing nothing to stop ships and<lb />planes loaded with cocaine and<lb />heroin from entering the conti-<lb />nental U.S.A. The case load that<lb />I was a part of only reflected the<lb />2:30 p.m. docket. The average<lb />fine was $60. The math comes<lb />out to approximately $3,000 per<lb />hour paid by African Americans.<lb />There are two dockets in the<lb />morning and two in the after-<lb />noon. Again, the math (by Olds)<lb />would strongly suggest $12,000<lb />per day, five days per week equals<lb />$60,000 weekly in traffic fines<lb />from the African American com-<lb />munity!<lb /><lb />Was this some new form of<lb /> obuy black ? that I had been<lb />solicited to participate in against<lb />my will? I entered into the hurts of<lb />the people whose family budgets<lb />were seriously upset by traffic<lb />violations and the excessive fines.<lb />I thought seriously about the<lb />training the patrolman had re-<lb />ceived that forced me into a pat-<lb />tern as part of his indoctrina-<lb />tion. Next, I meditated on how<lb />Egyptians (people of color, be-<lb />fore the Arabs arrived!) had en-<lb />slaved the Israelites (also people<lb />of color).<lb /><lb />African Americans have a pro-<lb />jected disposable income in 1996<lb />at 427 billion dollars (The At-<lb />lanta Journal/The Atlanta Con-<lb />stitution, Friday, June 30, 1995).<lb />Marc Rice, Associated Press, is<lb />quoted in the Detroit News, (Fn-<lb /><lb />-day, August 5, 1994),  oThe spend-<lb />ing power of black Americans is<lb />rising at a faster rate than the<lb />nation as a whole reports a study<lb />that urges retailers to do more to<lb />attract those consumers. ? The surveillance tap<lb />showed the disturbance, which<lb />was verbal and lasted a few min<lb />utes.<lb /><lb />Security guards from the clut<lb />rushed in, broke up the confron<lb />tation, and Tupac and his parts<lb />left immediately after that. At<lb />tempts to tie that altercation t<lb />Tupac Ts death have been diffi<lb />cult because the man Tupac wa<lb />arguing with was restrained by<lb />security at the MGM Grand and<lb />held for questioning while Tupac<lb />was allowed to leave.<lb /><lb />When the shooting occurred<lb />the unknown man was still in<lb />custody of the security team.         <p>10-THE  oM"-VOICE - WEEK OF OCTOBER 25-31, 1996<lb /><lb />The American Dream. It Ts<lb />that fundamental idea that if<lb />you work hard and take<lb />responsibility, anything is<lb />possible in this country. It<lb />was true for Harvey Gantt,<lb />and he believes we have to<lb />make that dream real again<lb />for all North Carolinians.<lb />Harvey Gantt started out<lb />poor, but he beat the odds<lb />and graduated from Clem-<lb />son and MIT. Starting with |<lb />nothing, he built a successful<lb />_architectural business. Gantt became a leader in his church<lb />and his community. He Ts been married to his wife Cindy for<lb />thirty-two years, and they've been blessed with four chil-<lb />dren, and now their first grandchild.<lb /><lb />Harvey Gantt believes that education is still the path to a<lb />better future. That's why he Ts proposed a new tax deduction<lb />to help families pay for college tuition or job training. He<lb />believes we have to stop the cuts in student loans, and Head<lb />Start and math and science programs, so we can give our<lb />kids a shot at the future. That Ts what the American Dream is<lb />all about.<lb /><lb />Harvey Gantt believes that a secure retirement is also<lb />part of the American Dream. That's a commitment this coun-<lb />try made to our parents and grandparents that must be kept.<lb />Harvey Gantt will protect Medicare and Social Security.<lb /><lb />There are so many changes that North Carolinians are<lb />facing. Harvey Gantt believes that they must be met with<lb />new ideas and old values. New ideas like a tax deduction<lb />for education. Old values like keeping our commitment to<lb />our parents. It Ts a new world out there, we need a Senator<lb />who understands it. That Ts Harvey Gantt.<lb /><lb />Renew the American Dream.<lb />For Working Families, For A Change.<lb /><lb />Vote November 5th<lb />For<lb /><lb />Harvey Gantt<lb />For U.S. Senate  ~96<lb /><lb />Paid For By Harvey Gantt For Senate Campaign Committee<lb /></p>
