Jim Hunt<lb />has agreed to five debates and<lb />joint appearances as part of the<lb />fall gubernatorial campaign, and<lb />his campaign has challenged<lb />Rep. Al<lb />Sharpton. We have shared many<lb />causes and have tried to support<lb />and guide the victims of so many<lb />racist tragedies. I know them to be de-<lb />cent people. But the political mis-<lb />calculations they are making are<lb />enormous.<lb /><lb />American political life is un-<lb />dergoing a huge transformation<lb />right at this moment. The fail-<lb />ure of both major parties to pro-<lb />duce any kind of relief from the<lb /><lb />mounting social and economic<lb />crisis has given rise to a move-<lb />ment for anew party that breaks<lb />the traditional mold and brings<lb />diverse Americans together on a<lb />broad scale to restructure gov-<lb />ernment, the political process<lb />and the economy. That party has<lb />arisen. It is called the Reform<lb />Party. And it is the African-<lb />American communityTs best hope<lb />for the future.<lb /><lb />Minister Farrakhan, while<lb />insightfully calling on the Mil-<lb />lion Man March to shape Black<lb />Americans into an independent<lb />third force, has nonetheless ca-<lb />pitulated to pressure to make<lb />yet another mournful attempt to<lb />persuade Bill Clinton and the<lb />Democratic Party to heed a Black<lb />Agenda. Heand other Black lead-<lb />ers are preparing to hold a Black<lb />Convention to issue a mandate<lb />to the Democrats.<lb /><lb />In 1988, Minister Farrakhan<lb />and I did just that. We stood<lb />together at the Wheat Street<lb />Baptist Church in Atlanta, just<lb /><lb />Photo by Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />as Rev. Jesse Jackson was being<lb />pointedly humiliated by the<lb />Democratic Party, and urged<lb />Black Americans to go indepen-<lb />dent.<lb /><lb />It is now eight years later.<lb />Black America is going indepen-<lb />dent. Rev. Sharpton is an<lb /><lb />intelligent and shrewd political<lb />leader. He and I worked together<lb />closely and I know him well. More<lb />than anyone, he understands<lb />that Clinton and the Democrats<lb />concede nothing unless we are<lb />willing to hurt them where they<lb />live - at the voting booth. But<lb />Rev. SharptonTs modus operandi,<lb />like that of his political mentor<lb />Jesse Jackson, is to use the rheto-<lb />ric of independence while re-<lb />maining a Democrat. <lb />A prayer<lb />answered:<lb />A Leigh Family ~<lb />Reunion<lb /><lb />~Last August two women<lb />boarded an Amtrak train headed<lb />for Newport News, Virginia.<lb />Gertie was making hr annual<lb />pilgrimage from Philadelphia to<lb />Creswell, NC, for the revival at<lb />St. john Missionary Baptist<lb />Church. Evelyn was coming<lb />home to Hampton, Virginia, from<lb />Maryland. Plagued by similar<lb />arthritic problems, both made<lb />their way to the trainTs handi-<lb />capped car. Gertie arrived first,<lb />settled into one seat, and put her<lb />extra bag in the empty seat across<lb />the aisle. By the time Evelyn got<lb />there, she was very tired. As she<lb />moved toward an empty seat,<lb />she heard a womanTs voice say,<lb />oYou can sit here, I just have my<lb />things in that seat.? Though they<lb />were complete strangers, for<lb />some divinely inexplicable rea-<lb />son Gertie had been drawn to<lb />Evelyn.<lb /><lb />As soon as Evelyn settled in,<lb />they began to chat. She asked<lb />Gertie, oWhere ya going?? oTo<lb />my church revival in Creswell,<lb />North Carolina,? Gertie an-<lb />swered.<lb /><lb />EveylnTs eyes got as big as sil-<lb />ver dollars. oCreswell! she ex-<lb />claimed, oMy motherTs people are<lb />from Creswell, and ITve been try-<lb />ing to find my people ever since<lb />she died.? Eveyln explained that<lb />her mother was very young. Her<lb />mother seldom talked about<lb />Creswell except to say her grand-<lb />father, James Anderson Leigh,<lb />had been born there. Over the<lb />years, Evelyn had come down for<lb />a couple of funerals, but neither<lb />she, her siblings, nor their chil-<lb />dren knew their North Carolina<lb />people. Seven of EvelynTs nine<lb />siblings had died without con-<lb />necting with their North Caro-<lb />lina kin. For years, Evelyn had<lb />prayed for help in locating her<lb />lost family.<lb /><lb />As fate would have it, not only<lb />did Gertie know all of EvelynTs<lb />folks, her deceased husband was<lb />a Leigh. GertieTs sons were<lb />EvelynTs blood relatives. Before<lb />they parted, Evelyn wrote down<lb />the names of her Creswell ances-<lb />tors for Gertie to pass on. The article lists sev-<lb /><lb />their web sites, home pages etc.<lb />Also listed are many of the places<lb />of origin of the hate messages.<lb /><lb />Most of the cyber haters, of<lb />course, are white males, usually<lb />college types, and their unedu-<lb />cated rural counterparts. The<lb />premise is simple. They are<lb />steeped in the wellspring of inter-<lb />national white supremacy and feel<lb />they have lost ground via the Civil<lb />Rights Movement, the growth of<lb />non-white populations, immigra-<lb />tion of non-whites into the United<lb />States and other so called white<lb />countries. They feel the white race<lb />must fight not to become extinct,<lb />or swallowed up by darker races.<lb />They are against race mixing, af-<lb />firmative action, non-white im-<lb />migration policies, and integrated<lb />living and education.<lb /><lb />In addition, they believe there<lb />will be a race war, which they<lb />intend to win, thus destroying<lb />as many of the omud people? as<lb />they can in America and restor-<lb />ing the country to its proper<lb />owners. No, not American Indi-<lb />ans, white European Americans.<lb /><lb />Cyber Nazis<lb /><lb />Most of these groups may con-<lb /><lb />eral of the groups along with<lb /><lb />sist of a few individuals, but their<lb />deft use of the Internet, includ-<lb />ing home pages stating purpose,<lb />and linking to other sites of like<lb />purpose, create a rather vast<lb />network of interlinking, commu-<lb />nicating haters all disseminat-<lb />ing information and influencing<lb />thoughts.<lb /><lb />They also reach a few people<lb />who are on the edge personally<lb />and encourage them to act as<lb />lone individuals carrying out acts<lb />of violence. No one in govern-<lb />ment is dealing with this issue,<lb />basically because they are white<lb />also and these are their people.<lb /><lb />When Blacks do something<lb />horrible, they can be heard loud<lb />and clear, but when whites do<lb />things, they have another atti-<lb />tude. Witness the slow poke - itTs<lb />not a conspiracy - they burned<lb />the churches down themselves -<lb />attitude of law enforcement.<lb /><lb />They asked parishioners of<lb />Black churches owas their pas-<lb />tor having sexual relations with<lb />any of the parishioners?? They contacted<lb />the university only to be told the<lb />university has a policy of not<lb />interfering with freedom of<lb />speech.<lb /><lb />Below is a list of hate groups<lb />on the Internet. I spoke there at the invi-<lb />tation of former Congressman<lb />Tim Penny, a friend and political<lb />ally, who has been instrumental<lb />in promoting public dialogue on<lb />the culture of politics in America.<lb />Here are some excerpts from the<lb />talk. If you would like a copy of<lb />the whole presentation, call my<lb />office at 1-800-288-3201 and I<lb />will send you one.<lb /><lb />The question has been raised<lb />as to whether the divisions so<lb />rampant in the American body<lb />politic have effectively crippled<lb />an otherwise functional political<lb />system or whether the<lb />disfunctionality of the political<lb />process contributes to political<lb />and social polarization. In my<lb />opinion, both are true. And if we<lb />are to overcome the discord of<lb />American political life, then I<lb />think we have tolook more closely<lb />at what has produced both a di-<lb />vided nation and a political sys-<lb />tem which thrives offof those di-<lb />visions.<lb /><lb />I have found the work of a<lb />psychologist to be of enormous<lb />value in these matters. He is<lb />Kenneth Gergen, Professor of<lb />Psychology at Swarthmore Col-<lb />lege (and, incidentally, the<lb />brother of David Gergen, who<lb />gave the luncheon address here<lb />earlier today).<lb /><lb />Gergen writes of the destruc-<lb />tive effect of what he calls iden-<lb />tity politics. Identity politics is,<lb />simply put, engaging in political<lb />action " like electoral cam-<lb />paigns, lobbying, fundraising "<lb />on behalf ofan identifiable group-<lb />ing of people " senior citizens,<lb />feminists, pro-lifers, African<lb />Americans, farmers, small busi-<lb />ness people, fundamentalist<lb />Christians, etc. This mode of ac-<lb />tivity "the politics ofidentity "<lb />has dominated the past 50 years<lb />of American history across the<lb />political spectrum " left, center<lb />and right.<lb /><lb />Identity politics has, in effect,<lb />become the public philosophy of<lb />America and Americans, It is the<lb />driving force on Capitol Hill as<lb />various interest groups compete<lb />with one another to direct legis-<lb />lative initiatives and overall so-<lb />cial policy in their own interests.<lb />ItTs what the lobbyists do. ItTs<lb />what all the money pays for. ItTs<lb />the basis on which campaigns<lb />for public office are run. And up<lb />until 1992 " when 20 million<lb />Americans voted independent in<lb />the presidential election " itTs<lb />been the basis on which people<lb />cast their ballots.<lb /><lb />My colleague, Dr. Fred<lb />Newman, in a recent essay en-<lb />titled oA Patriot is a Revolution-<lb />ary? points out the fact that the<lb />domination of identity politics<lb />over the last 50 years or so has<lb />ironically left America and<lb />Americans without oan identity.?<lb />The typically just demands of<lb />various groupings to get more<lb />for themselves, for their causes<lb />and their communities, to com-<lb />pensate for past deprivations or<lb />to prevent present and future<lb />biases, has left the country as a<lb />whole without advocates. In the<lb />name ghar gio yea<lb />seeking and ge r<lb />share of their right#" be they<lb /><lb />FR ATTEN FREES Ae MAAR<lb /><lb />Bill of Rights " we are, in effect,<lb />undermining the very constitu-<lb />tional arrangement which guar-<lb />antees those rights. For America,<lb />tragically, is corroding into a<lb />permanent state of discord as<lb />ever-proliferating groupings "<lb />center, left and right " fight<lb />over dividing up its dwindling<lb />spoils. Perhaps we all believed<lb />that government would take care<lb />of the country as a whole. But<lb />instead, government has been<lb /><lb />taken over by the two political<lb />parties who live and breathe off<lb />of identity politics. No wonder<lb />election campaigns have become<lb />so negative. Negative campaign-<lb />ing is not an overlay on the pro-<lb />cess. It is the process through<lb />which politicians and parties<lb />gain advantage by manipulat-<lb />ing the American people on the<lb />basis of their oidentities.?<lb /><lb />There is perhaps no grouping<lb />of Americans more identified<lb />with identity politics " and more<lb /><lb />disempowered by it " than the<lb />Black community. Obviously, the<lb />history of social, political, eco-<lb />nomic and moral injustice per-<lb />petrated on the African Ameri-<lb />can people has deeply scarred<lb />the revolutionary experiment in<lb />democracy begun in 1776. While<lb />no longer considered three-fifths<lb />ofahuman being, today one third<lb />of all Black families live in dire<lb />poverty. Many Blacks feel<lb />Grodin speaks for many Jews as<lb />it relates to us, particularly in<lb />these days and times. And many<lb />Jews, understandably, are<lb />pained by that thought without<lb />knowing why Blacks are feeling<lb />the way they do. Let me try to<lb />explain.<lb /><lb />Grodin comes to mind for two<lb />reasons. As a Pittsburgher, the<lb />hard-to-stomach nighttime host<lb />is prone to speak his mind, no<lb />matter how specific and sopho-<lb />moric his arguments often tend to<lb />be. His shoot-from-the-hip unre-<lb />lenting attacks against O.J.<lb />Simpson for nearly a year were<lb />insulting, particularly to Blacks.<lb />Rarely did he argue from any fac-<lb />tual basis on his beliefin Simpson's<lb />guilt, and almost never did he<lb />invite guests on his show who<lb />offered differing points of view.<lb />Had Sheila Stainback, a Black<lb />hostess on the same network,<lb />acted that way she would have<lb />been whisked off the air, and we<lb />all know it " ask Arsenio Hall.<lb /><lb />Second, Grodin is Jewish, a<lb />fact which was brought to my<lb />attention by the respected Rabbi<lb />Gary Greenbaum, former chair-<lb />man of the Los Angeles Police<lb />Commission. Greenbaum had<lb />received an article I wrote in The<lb />Los Angeles Daily Journal from<lb />a constituent who felt I was be-<lb />ing oanti-Semitic? when I criti-<lb />cized Loyola Law School Profes-<lb />sor Stan Goldman, Grodin, U.S.<lb />News and World Report Pub-<lb />lisher Mortimar B. Zuckerman,<lb />talk show host Geraldo Rivera,<lb />attorney Gloria Allred and oth-<lb /><lb />We plan for a birth. ...<lb /><lb />ers. I chastised them for their<lb />unapologetic attacks against<lb />Black jurors, observers and re-<lb /><lb />porters like me who felt the evi- |<lb /><lb />dence in Simpson's double mur-<lb />der trial was insufficient to war-<lb />rant a conviction.<lb /><lb />Blacks in America have learned<lb />to, as the late Arthur Ashe learned<lb />while growing up in segregated<lb />Richmond, Va., olook over your<lb />shoulder for trouble.? The mod-<lb />ern-day record seems to confirm<lb />how some of the otrouble? facing<lb />Blacks seems to come from a few<lb />powerful minions within the Jew-<lb />ish community.<lb /><lb />Thejumping off point for these<lb />Jewish leaders is Min. Louis<lb />Farrakhan, the much-hated<lb />leader of the Nation of Islam,<lb />largely for his well-documented<lb />vitriol against the Jewish faith<lb />in general and some Jewish busi-<lb />nessmen_ in_ particular.<lb />Farrakhan is just as hard on<lb />Black businessmen who engage<lb />in questionable practices in<lb />ghetto neighborhoods. That fact,<lb />however, is lost on these Jewish<lb />leaders. Hardly a Black leader<lb />in sight has escaped being overtly<lb />or covertly threatened with some<lb />sort of reprisals by Jewish lead-<lb />ers, like the Anit-Defamation<lb />LeagueTs Abraham Foxman, for<lb />failing to odenounce? Farrakhan<lb />for his anti-Semitic remarks.<lb /><lb />But thatTs an old story.<lb />TodayTs rallying cry, in virtually<lb />all white neighborhoods - not<lb />just Jewish ones " is oblame it on<lb />0.J.?<lb /><lb />Why? In Jewish neighbor-<lb />hoods, we feel the reason is<lb />simple enough. Simpson was<lb />accused of murdering not only<lb />his white wife, but her friend<lb />Ronald Lyle Goldman, who hap-<lb />pens to be Jewish. Worse,<lb />Simpson was found not guilty of<lb />committing these heinous crimes<lb />on October 3, 1995. Jews, like<lb /><lb />We prepare for an education. ...<lb /><lb />We train for a job....<lb /><lb />We finance a house....<lb /><lb />We benefit from health insurance... .<lb /><lb />We dream of a vacation....<lb /><lb />We save for a rainy day. ..<lb /><lb />the ones I described earlier, at-<lb />tacked him savagely and con-.<lb /><lb />tinue to this very day.<lb />Other sons and daughters of<lb /><lb />Zion walked out on him when he-<lb /><lb />entered restaurants. Still oth-<lb />ers, who play a large role in de-<lb />termining what gets on the big<lb />(movie) and little (television)<lb />screens are making sure<lb />Simpson doesnTt work anymore.<lb /><lb />Worse, Superior Court Judge |<lb /><lb />Alan Haber nullified SimpsonTs<lb />right to call forensi¢ pathologist<lb />Henry Lee as an expert witness<lb />in the upcoming civil trial.<lb />Haber, coincidentally, is Jew-<lb />ish.<lb /><lb />By the way, whatTs Haber<lb />doing hearing this case anyway,<lb />many Blacks are no doubt ask-<lb />ing. We distinctly remember<lb />when Judge Roosevelt Dorn, a<lb />Black jurist, was swiftly removed<lb />from the Reginald Denny beat-<lb />ing case of Damian Williams, et<lb />al., because the district<lb /><lb />attorney's office felt he could not<lb /><lb />be objective in a case involving<lb />Black defendants. The same ar-<lb />gument could be made about<lb />Haber running a court accord-<lb />ing to Hoyle in a case brought by<lb />a fellow Jew, couldn't it?<lb /><lb />HereTs the real rub. In the<lb />Jewish community, where the<lb />ojustice-got-screwed? philosophy<lb />reigns supreme these days, vir-<lb />tually no one can prove they ex-<lb />hibited the same level of<lb />venom over the injustice meted<lb />out by Superior Court Judge<lb />Joyce Karlin, the Jewish woman<lb />who let a convicted Korean gro-<lb />cer walk out of her courtroom<lb />free as a bird when a videotape<lb />caught the businesswoman blow-<lb />ing the back of the head off 15-<lb />year-old Latasha Harlins. There<lb />is no excuse for that. The flimsy<lb />excuse offered from some Jew-<lb />ish quarters, including The Jew-<lb />ish Journal (April 3, 1993), that<lb /><lb />Read To Your Children<lb /><lb />We secure our families against disabilities. .. .<lb /><lb />We invest for our retirement....<lb /><lb />HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN ANYTHING?<lb /><lb />ogh oko ed en erg cee<lb /><lb />Celebrating Over 55 Years Of<lb /><lb />Just as sure as there's a beginning,<lb /><lb />there's an end.<lb />Don't leave the end unplanned.<lb />You took care of everything else..<lb /><lb />| PHILLIPS BROTHERS MORTUARY<lb /><lb />Judge Karlin was owithin her<lb />rights? to offer such a ruling, is<lb />inexcusable to us. The issue is<lb />not debatable.<lb /><lb />~ Another galling point with<lb />Blacks is there are few voices<lb />crying out in the heavily-Jewish<lb />Brentwood, Burbank, West L.A..,<lb />Beverly Hills and West Holly-<lb />wood areas over how white po-<lb />lice officers in those venues rou-<lb />tinely stop and harass Black men<lb />who happen to be driving, walk-<lb />ing or sitting in those areas after<lb />the sun goes down. This is de-<lb />spite the fact that some of those<lb />police departments are being<lb /><lb />| sued ever as we speak. This has<lb /><lb />happened to me more than once,<lb />even once when I was just wait-<lb />ing at a bus stop.<lb /><lb />It hurts us to see these double<lb />standards being played out live<lb />and in living color. Not so much<lb />because they are so obvious, like<lb />seeing a murder captured on vid-<lb />eotape. It hurts because we<lb />Blacks are virtually powerless<lb />to do anything about them.<lb /><lb />Now-that you've heard how<lb />many of us feel, do you think I<lb />am an anti-Semite for giving you<lb />the real deal? Perhaps you do<lb />and I canTt stop you from think-<lb />ing otherwise.<lb /><lb />My critics might be mildly<lb />interested to know that my<lb />grandfather, Harry Schatzman,<lb />was a Jewish immigrant from<lb />Germany. Unfortunately, I never<lb />met him. He died just before |<lb />was born. One thing I can say is<lb />that my father, the late Clyde<lb />Schatzman, never said an un-<lb />kind word about him.<lb /><lb />So ITm not mad at Jews when<lb />I tell these things. ITm just being<lb />accurate. Will I be criticized for<lb />this? ITll check in with Rabbi<lb />Greenbaum to gauge the barom-<lb />eter. Inmates<lb />work an assembly line that turns<lb />out about ten lockers and ten<lb />bunks per day. They also manu-<lb />facture cabinets, racks, metal<lb />doors and customized products.<lb /><lb />Anson Community College in-<lb />structors teach classes on weld-<lb />ing and computer assisted draft-<lb />ing (CAD) in a part of the prison<lb />metal fabrication plant. Inmates<lb />who complete these classes can<lb />then go to work in the plant.<lb /><lb />oVery few of these inmates have<lb />experience working with sheet<lb />metal? said Bullock. oBut with<lb />the training and the experience<lb />they get in the plant, we help<lb />them develop a good work ethic<lb />and skills to get a job.?<lb /><lb />A skilled CAD operator in a<lb />top-notch fabrication shop may<lb />make an annual salary in the<lb />high twenties and a skilled com-<lb />puterized press brake operator<lb />can make $14 to $15 an hour,?<lb />Bullock said While developing<lb />their skills working in the plant,<lb />the inmates are paid seventy<lb />cents a day.<lb /><lb />Brown Creek has the first pow-<lb />der coat operation of any of the<lb />stateTs prison industries. Inmates<lb />hang the bed frames or lockers<lb />on a conveyer line, where the<lb />product is washed and dried.<lb />Next, it goes into a booth where<lb />the metal receives an electro-<lb />statically-charged powder paint<lb />blown on at low pressure. From<lb />the booth, the conveyer carries<lb />the product into an oven where<lb />itTs cured at 380 degrees for<lb />twelve to fourteen minutes.
