In<lb />fact, mentoring at one time was<lb />the only means or way of passing<lb />down and transmitting values,<lb />skills, and character qualities from<lb />one generation to the next<lb />Mcntoring is a principle as old as<lb />the Word of God: oAs iron sharp-<lb />ens iron, ? says the book of Prov-<lb />erbs, oone man sharpens another. ?<lb /><lb />Moses mentored Joshua. Ezra<lb />mentored Nehemiah. Elijah<lb />mentored Elisha. Barnabas<lb />mentored Paul and John Mark.<lb />Paul mentored Timothy, Titus and<lb />others. Paul also mentored Aquila<lb />and Priscilla, whoin turn mentored<lb /><lb />Apollos. And of course the master "<lb /><lb />mentor Jesus Chnst, mentored and<lb />passed down the values of the King-<lb />dom of God tothe Twelve. Although<lb />He preacfied to the masses, He<lb />invested Himself in a few, know-<lb />ing that those few would invest<lb />themselves in still others and<lb />thereby transform the world.<lb /><lb />So then if we want our families,<lb />our churches, our businesses, our<lb />communities and ultimately our<lb />world transformed...then we must<lb />determine as Men of God and Men<lb />of Courage, to pour our lives into<lb />the next generation. We must in-<lb />vest in them, by spending Tmore<lb />time with the few. We must learn<lb />to live for the next generation. We<lb />must become mentors!<lb /><lb />But what does it mean to be a<lb />mentor? The word Mentor derives<lb />its meaning from the character in<lb />Homer Ts Odyssey. In this ancient<lb />Greek fable, King Odyssey of<lb />Ithaca, while he went off the war,<lb />entrusted his only son,<lb />Telemachus, to the care and train-<lb />ing of his wise and trusted friend<lb />Mentor.. Mentor, was a wise, car-<lb />ing man, who was committed to<lb />training the next generation of<lb />leaders for the kingdom. Last year<lb />the 12-year NFL pro had a minus-<lb />1 touchdown-to-interception ratio,<lb />throwin 18 touchdowns to 19 in-<lb />terceptions.<lb /><lb />This year, with Sherman as his<lb />coach, Moon passed for 3,934 yards<lb />on 31 touchdowns and 14 intercep-<lb />tions. His total yardage was fourth<lb />best in the NFC, and his 91.1 qb<lb />rating was sixth best in the NFC.<lb />Minnesota head coach Dennis<lb />Green is pleased with his decision<lb />to hire Sherman. oI made the move<lb />for two reasons, ? said Green, the<lb />NFL Ts third ever Black head coach.<lb /> oFirst of all, I was familiar with<lb />Ray, and I knew what a tremen-<lb />dous coach he was.<lb /><lb /> oSecondly, I knew he had worked<lb />with Warren in Houston, and he<lb />was comfortable with him. They<lb />work well together in practice and<lb />on game day. Warren turned it up<lb />a bit, and we think Ray Ts played a<lb />big part in that. ?<lb /><lb />Sherman, who began his coach<lb />ing career in college at San Jose<lb />State in 1974, has been successful<lb />wherever he had coached, particu-<lb /><lb />Congresswoman Eva M. The Oilers set.a team record<lb />for rushing touchdowns (26) and<lb />finished second in the league in<lb />scoring (424 points). Under Sherman,<lb />the Falcons jumped to 10th in the<lb />NFL in both scoring and total of-<lb />fense after placing 24th and 22nd<lb />in those categories in 1989.<lb /><lb />San Francisco was Sherman Ts<lb />next stop in the NFL, first as the<lb />49ers T running back coach. He<lb />worked with an offensive unit that<lb />averaged 116.3 yard per game and<lb />1.2 yards per carry after gaining<lb />78.6 yards a game and 3.6 yards a<lb />carry in 1990. Moving to receivers<lb />in 1992, Sherman tutored a pass-<lb /><lb />ability to pay by patients. ?<lb /><lb />The proposed GOP plan would<lb />take $270 billion from the Medi-<lb />care budget and an additional $182<lb />billion from the Medicaid budget<lb />over the next five years. North<lb />Carolinians can expect to lose $6.7<lb />billion from Medicare and $8 bil-<lb />lion from Medicaid.<lb /><lb /> oThese cuts place more than one<lb />million Medicare and Medicaid<lb />recipients at risk in our state and<lb />reduce health benefits by $15 bil-<lb />lion, ? said Clayton. oAmerican citi-<lb />zens deserve the best health care<lb />available and we cannot afford to<lb />rob them of that to give a tax cut to<lb />the least needy of our society. ?<lb /><lb />Clayton and Stokes will be avail-<lb />able to answer media and con-<lb />stituents questions regarding cuts<lb /><lb />quarterbacks the tricks of the trade<lb /><lb />ing attack featuring Jerry Rice<lb />and John Taylor that finished sec-<lb />ond in the NFL in 1993 and third<lb />in 1992.<lb /><lb /> oThe guy just flat out knows the<lb />game of football, ? says 49ers head<lb />coach George Seifert. oHe knows<lb />how to break down defensive<lb />schemes, and he always finds new<lb />ways to attack even the best de-<lb />fenses. ?<lb /><lb />The year before joining the Vi-<lb />kings, Sherman was the offensive<lb />coordinator for the New York Jets.<lb />There he helped receivers Rob<lb />Moore earn a Pro Bow! berth with<lb />78 receptions for 1,010 yards.<lb /><lb /> oHe Ts a tremendous teacher, ?<lb />says Vikings wide recievers Chris<lb />Carter. He helps us find crack and<lb />decreases in the defense or in a<lb />guy Ts technique that pays divi-<lb />dends during certain situations in<lb />games. He knows what he Ts talk-<lb />ing about, so I Tm not at all sur-<lb />prised at the success he Ts had int<lb />he NFL. ?<lb /><lb />Sherman hopes to continue his<lb />good fortune with the Vikings.<lb /> oWe'reonthe right road, ? Sherman<lb />said, oWe've gotten a little more<lb />consistent on both sides of the ball.<lb />We're basically doing the same<lb />things, but we Tve modified some<lb />routes and patterns that I know<lb />Warren is comfortable with. Ten years later,<lb />those -statistics matured into the<lb />1994 polls which showed that 57%<lb />of African-Americans favored the<lb />creation of a third party.<lb /><lb />Add to those statistics Minister<lb />Louis Farrakhan Ts enthusiastic<lb />call to the Million Man March and<lb />all Black Americans to create an<lb />independent othird force, ? and we<lb />have a situation where Black vot-<lb />ers are ready toestablish ourselves<lb />in a new political alliance.<lb /><lb />But can Black voters and white<lb />independents become real part-<lb />ners? Many of those radical cen-<lb />trists who supported Ross Perot in<lb />1992 did so as a way to attack the<lb />relentless gfowth of big govern<lb />ment and big deficits that were<lb />funding massive programs that did<lb />little to develop the nation. Among<lb />African-Americans, Latinos, gays,<lb />and other traditionally pro-big<lb />government constituencies, an<lb />approach which replaces the 30-<lb />year pattern of blatantly politi-<lb /><lb />cized spending (the Democratic<lb />Party used the War on Poverty to<lb />install a highly controlled patron-<lb />age infrastructure, not to end pov-<lb />erty) with direct citizens T democ-<lb />racy has considerable appeal. You<lb />may have seen the C-SPAN broad-<lb />cast of the independent Patriot<lb />Party convention in Minneapolis<lb />last spring, at which I told the<lb />Black delegates gathered that I<lb />would not return to the African-<lb />American community with the tra-<lb />ditional promises of government-<lb />funded jobs and teen-pregnancy<lb />programs, but with a plan to re-<lb />structure the political process to<lb />empower them and all Americans.<lb />In return, I said, J needed a clear<lb />statement from the white delegates<lb />that the Black community would<lb />not only be welcome, but would be<lb />sought after by the Party. Both<lb />Blacks and whites were enor-<lb />mously supportive of what I had to<lb />say.<lb /><lb />The bottom line is this: The in-<lb />dependent white center needs<lb />Blacks in order to go somewhere.<lb />Blacks need the independent white<lb />center in order to have somewhere<lb />to go.<lb /><lb />®<lb /><lb />KEEMA (L) AND HER MOTHER, MS. For<lb />these societal issues have a re-<lb />markable effect on our economy,<lb />your businesses and our future.<lb />Literally millions of Americans<lb />did not participate as we did in<lb />the economic expansion of the 1<lb />980s. We have truly become a<lb />nation and haves and have nots.<lb />Consider the emotional and eco-<lb />nomic costs of the deterioration<lb />of the American family, the dis-<lb />appointing condition of our-edu-<lb />cational system, random and in-<lb />discriminate violence, the plight<lb />of the homeless and hungry, the<lb />extraordinary weight of our wel-<lb />fare programs, the fear in many<lb />Americans for their jobs and their<lb />standard of living, and the ab-<lb />sence of simple caring and de-<lb />cency. These social ills are tear-<lb />ing at the fabric of our country<lb />and jeopardizing our future.<lb /><lb />I trust that is enough bad news<lb />for one day. Let Ts move on to the<lb />brighter side. Our standard of<lb />living is among the highest in<lb />the world. Our system of govern-<lb />ment is stable by international<lb />standards. The U.S. economy is<lb />now growing slowly, but steadily.<lb /><lb />Personal incomes are increas-<lb />ing and consumer confidence is<lb />strong. The productivity of the<lb />American worker is the highest<lb />in the world.<lb /><lb />In many industries, the United<lb /><lb />States has become the world Ts<lb />most competitive manufacturer.<lb />The U.S. has created 21 million<lb />new jobs during the last twenty<lb />years. Thereis little upward pres-<lb />sure in salaries and wages.<lb />Capacity utilization is at an<lb />historic high of 84%. Capital<lb />spending continues to be strong.<lb />There is little or no inflation in<lb />the U.S. economy. The National<lb />Unemployment Rate of 5.5% is<lb />low by historic standards. Do you<lb />remember Jimmy Carter's Mis-<lb />ery Index? The Misery Index is<lb />the sum of the unemployment<lb />rate and the inflation rate.<lb />Today Ts Misery Index of 8.2% is<lb />the lowest in twenty years.<lb />Coming closer to home, the<lb />Southeast economy is the fourth<lb />largest economy in the world.<lb />During the last ten years, five<lb /><lb />out of every eight jobs created in<lb />America have been created in<lb />the Southeast. You live and work<lb />in the most vibrant economic<lb />region in the United States.<lb /><lb />North Carolina continues to<lb />prosper as well with increases in<lb />capital investment, employment<lb />and personal incomes. Specifi-<lb />cally, there are 256,800 new jobs<lb />in our state. Job creation in 1993<lb />and 1994 is the strongest in the<lb />last ten years. These jobs are a<lb />mix of expansions of existing in-<lb />dustry and new companies to<lb />our state.<lb /><lb />As you look forward, three fac-<lb />tors will drive America Ts future<lb /> " job creation, productivity and<lb />inflation. <lb />We need to continue to pray for<lb />our young people. It Ts time for the<lb />young people to wake up! This<lb />world is about to come to an end.<lb />We're not living in the last day,<lb />but we're living in the last hour,<lb />and we have no time to waste try-<lb />ing to win our young people to<lb />Christ. It Ts time out for the par-<lb />ties, smoking, drinking, having sex<lb />out of marriage, selling drugs, and<lb />etc. It Ts time to get right with the<lb />Lord. Some say they Tre not ready,<lb />but if not now. When? With the<lb />world getting worse everyday,<lb />what better life can you live then<lb />with JESUS. Your fun starts when<lb />you accept JESUS CHRIST. The<lb />things you long for in this world<lb />like cars, parties, money, smok-<lb />ing, drinking, and selling drugs<lb />are all temporally and will fade<lb />away. The blessings that JESUS<lb />have like unconditional love, peace,<lb />rest, and eternal life, are all per-<lb />manent and will last forever.<lb />JESUS will give you something<lb />that the world can Tt give you and<lb />the world can Tt take away. (JOY)<lb />Desire things that Ts going to last<lb /><lb />: MP-VOICE - WEEK OF JANUARY 5 - 15, 1996<lb /><lb />hat do we do concerning our<lb /><lb />forever like JESUS. Getting saved<lb />is the best thing that ever hap-<lb />pened to me. I can see where I use<lb />to be and where I am today and<lb />thank God for where He has<lb />brought me from, and how He has<lb />blessed and changed my life. TO<lb />GOD BE THE GLORY. There are<lb />a lot of young people in this world<lb />that Ts been hurt very badly in some-<lb />way or another, they have no one<lb />to turn to, no to talk to, so they get<lb /><lb />into drinking, drugs, and sex think-<lb />ing it Ts going to solve their prob-<lb />lems. We as Christians need to<lb />stop looking over the young people.<lb />Just because you see them smiling<lb />all the time does not mean that<lb />they Trealright. Take time out, talk<lb />with them, and really get to know<lb />them personally. We have to wit-<lb />ness to them also, but if you're not<lb />right how can you tell somebody<lb />else about Christ. There are Chris-<lb /><lb />tians who know the bible from<lb />Genesis to Revelation, but they Tre<lb />not living the word. Let Ts not only<lb />know the word but let Ts live the<lb />word, because the word is life.<lb /><lb />It hurts me to see Christians<lb />putting other Christians down, or<lb />talking about one another and jeal-<lb />ous of one another, having envy<lb />and hatred in their hearts toward<lb />one another. Ifthe Christians can Tt<lb />come together and get on one ac-<lb /><lb /> oYou Can Make It ?<lb /><lb />One thing you should know if<lb />you are anew Christian is that you<lb />are going to go through some tri-<lb />als, but God does these things to<lb />make you stronger. What you go<lb /><lb />through is only a test of your faith.<lb />That is what God is here for, he<lb />doesn't want you to worry about<lb />anything. Because God chose you<lb />out of the midst of the storm to give<lb /><lb />an example and to show another<lb />what God can do. But God wants<lb />you to give it all back to him, be-<lb />cause youcan Tt make it alone. Also,<lb />yod has a love for you that no man<lb /><lb />young<lb /><lb />cord, how can we expect those who<lb />are lost to come together in love.<lb />We always say our sisters and<lb />brothers need to come together<lb />first. Imagine if we all were to<lb />come on one accord. Think about<lb />what will happen, how God will<lb />move even the more in our lives.<lb />Think about all those souls that<lb />were saved on the day of Pente-<lb />cost. If we come together on one<lb />accord, we would witness with no<lb /><lb />can surpass, that He would lay His<lb />life, so you and I can have eternal<lb />life with him. So always<lb />remember....You can make it.<lb />You're not in this thing alone, God<lb /><lb />pe we will opie the will of God<lb /><lb />without self being in the way, our<lb />disagreements wouldn Tt lead to<lb />arguments and fights, there would<lb />be no confusion, and most of all<lb />more souls would be led to Christ.<lb />So let Ts be the Christian example<lb />that we are suppose to be. oLord<lb />Save The World. ?<lb /><lb />Aida Taylor<lb /><lb />will not let it last too long. <lb />ineeaal<lb /><lb />Work of our Youth<lb /><lb />made no effort to lead to Christ.<lb />Some of these adults feel that these<lb />young people can Tt change from<lb />their ways of thedevil, they are too<lb />stubborn, or they don Tt have to be<lb />saved. The elders of the church<lb />should be those who we can all<lb />look up to, those who help us when<lb />times become hard, and are con-<lb />cerned about our spiritual growth.<lb />Many of these elders do carry the<lb />responsibilities which they-should<lb />uphold, while many of them don Tt.<lb />Many of them put you down, they<lb />say, to build your character. I just<lb />pray that the people of God carry<lb />out the responsibilities which God<lb />has called them to do.<lb /><lb />Demarcus Brewington<lb /><lb />THAT TS A FRIEND by John<lb /><lb />Burroughs<lb /><lb />One whose grip isa little tighter,<lb /><lb />One whose smile is a little<lb />brighter, One whose deeds are a<lb />little whiter,<lb /><lb />That Ts what I call a friend.<lb /><lb />One who'll lend as quick as he'll<lb />borrow,<lb /><lb />One who's the same today as<lb />tomorrow, One who'll share your<lb />joy and sorrow, A<lb /><lb />That's what I call a friend.<lb /><lb />One whose thoughts are a little<lb />cleaner,<lb /><lb />One whose mind<lb />keener,<lb /><lb />One whoavoids those things that<lb />are meaner,<lb /><lb />That Ts what I call a friend<lb /><lb />is a little<lb /><lb />One when youre gone, who'll<lb />miss you sadly,<lb /><lb />One who'll welcome you back<lb />again gladly, One who though an-<lb />gered, will not speak madly,<lb /><lb />That Ts what I call a friend<lb /><lb />One whois always willing to aid<lb />you,<lb /><lb />One whose advice has always<lb />paid you, One who's defended when<lb />others flayed you,<lb /><lb />That Ts what I call a friend.<lb /><lb />One who's been fine when life<lb />seemed rotten,<lb /><lb />One whose ideals you have not<lb />forgotten, One who has given you<lb />more than he Ts rotten,<lb /><lb />That Ts what I call a friend. .<lb /><lb />This poem is dedicated to all of<lb />my friends at Philippi who have<lb />been there for me through this<lb />past year. Iam meeting new friends<lb />this year and I Tm praying they'll<lb />be as faithful as my old ones.<lb /><lb />Rahimallah Burnett<lb /><lb />For many of our young black<lb />brothers and sisters, everyday can<lb />be a day of struggles. We're living<lb />in the last days, and it seems that<lb />society is becoming a little harder<lb />to live in everyday.<lb /><lb />I am a 19 year old black man.<lb />I've been through many similar<lb />problems that many of our youth<lb />are going through now. I Tve had<lb />me share of struggles, obstacles,<lb /><lb />and hardships, and I would al-<lb />ways try to find the easiest way<lb />out; which, was not always the<lb />best or right choice. But through it<lb />all, the best choice that Iever made<lb />was when I excepted Christ into<lb />my life.<lb /><lb />It bothers me so much, when I<lb />see some of our young sisters out<lb />on the streets, troubled, and bur-<lb />dened down. Also, to see some of<lb />our young brothers not wanting to<lb />take that stand and become re-<lb />sponsible young men. I Tm never<lb />going to give up on any of them,<lb />because there is always hope that<lb />they will make it, and they will.<lb /><lb />I enjoy spending time just going<lb />out talking about Christ to our<lb />young people. It Ts wonderful to see<lb />that gleam in their eyes when I tell<lb />them that God loves them and<lb /><lb />that it Ts never too late to make a<lb />change in your life.<lb /><lb />It gives me such a joyful feeling:<lb />when many of the young people<lb />receive salvation. I commend a<lb />number of our young people, who<lb />are working hard in life; because,<lb />no matter what society tries to<lb />make it seem like, our youth does<lb />have a future.<lb /><lb />Through all of the hardships,<lb />such as teen pregnancy, drugs,<lb />crime, the non-importance of edu-<lb />cation, and so on, prayer changes<lb />things. If we all work together and<lb />put God first and foremost, we can<lb />help make that change, because<lb />the youth are our future.<lb /><lb />Julius Streeter<lb /><lb />Black, white congregations<lb />merge after 100 years<lb /><lb />Two of the oldest neighborhood<lb />in Beaumont, Texas, have ended<lb />100 years of segregation and<lb />formed the first fully integrated<lb />United Methodist Church in the<lb />Texas Annual (regional) confer-<lb />ence.<lb /><lb />McCabe Roberts Avenue United<lb />Methodist Church is the product<lb />of the merging of predominantly<lb />Black McCabe and predominantly<lb />white Roberts Avenue United<lb />Methodist churches.<lb /><lb />The new congregation recently<lb />held in celebration service with<lb />Bishop J. The<lb />move to combine the churches be-<lb />gan last June with the cross-cul-<lb />tural appointment of the minister.<lb />According to the Rev. While meeting, the com-<lb />mittees realized that renewal was<lb />needed in their churches.<lb /><lb />The committees of the two<lb />churches met together and made<lb /><lb />plans to merge, a move which ex-<lb />cited Beaumont as well as the<lb />United Methodist leadership.<lb /><lb />The new congregation held its<lb />first worship service December 3,<lb />attended by longtime members of<lb />both churches.
