Shinhoster, the national<lb />leader of the NAACP, was the key-<lb />note speaker Friday at the 52nd<lb />annualN.C. State Convention. The<lb />three-day event which was hosted<lb />by the Goldsboro-Wayne branch<lb />ended Saturday night.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts hard not to want to give up<lb />on American you all. But don't<lb />give up on America. And Lord<lb />please don Tt give up on yourself.<lb />We want you to be one ina million.<lb />We want you to be freedom fight-<lb />ers "strugglers in the cause of free-<lb /><lb />dom, ? said Shinhoster.<lb /><lb /> oThank you North Carolina<lb />NAACP for keeping the fight for<lb />freedom alive. When others had<lb />counted us out. When others just<lb />simply said wait and see. When<lb />others were preparing our obitu-<lb />ary and lining up to read it. You<lb /><lb />stepped up. And today, in spite of<lb /><lb />it all, in spite of the shortages and<lb />shortcomings, the NAACP is in<lb />fact moving forward. ?<lb /><lb />Shinhoster told an audience of<lb />more than 300 members that the<lb />next 60 days will be critical ones<lb />for the future of the NAACP.<lb /><lb /> oAll is not well in our beloved<lb />organization, ? said Shinhoster.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts going to take people who<lb />believe. People who truly, genu-<lb />inely believe in an unselfish man-<lb />ner in the cause of this great orga-<lb />nization to really save us all. ?<lb /><lb />He added, oIf people who believe<lb />in the cause of the NAACP would<lb />just send a dollar. If athletes and<lb />entertainers who make millions<lb />would share a small portion of<lb />their earnings, the problems would<lb />be solved. You ask for a dollar and<lb /><lb />you don Tt get it. You ask for a $15<lb />membership and you don Tt get it.<lb />What does it take? It takes people<lb />who are committed. ?<lb /><lb />Shinhoster said the NAACP is<lb />emerging out of the worst crisis in<lb />its 86-year history. He was refer-<lb />ring to the financial problems that<lb />the organization has faced in the<lb />last couple of years and the lack of<lb />confidence in the leadership.<lb /><lb />He said recovery is at hand, but<lb />money still is needed. Member-<lb />ship is the key. About 80 percent of<lb />the NAACP Ts operational fees are<lb />paid for by membership fees.<lb /><lb />He encouraged middle class<lb />blacks to start supporting the or-<lb />ganization again. He urged them<lb />to give something back. Moments<lb />later, he scolded black Americans<lb />who have succeeded financially,<lb />but have failed tojoin the causes of<lb />the NAACP. oThe opportunities<lb />they have now came because some-<lb />body labored long and hard and<lb />sacrificed to keep t doors of oppor-<lb />tunity open.<lb /><lb />They didn Tt do it for so some<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 2)<lb /><lb /> oONE INA MILLION ? The crowd fol-<lb />lowed a ogrieving ? family who rode<lb />in a black hearse borrowed from<lb />Hamilton Funeral Home.<lb /><lb />The Rev. Jamal Bryant of the<lb />Duke University School of Divin-<lb />ity presented the eulogy. Bryant<lb />told the crowd that the mock fu-<lb />neral should be viewed as a home-<lb />coming celebration rather a time<lb />of mourning.<lb /><lb /> oI Tm glad he Ts (voter apathy) dead<lb />because he Ts been messing with us<lb />for a long time. Bryant said.<lb /><lb /> oEvery time it looked as though<lb />we had voter apathy cornered he<lb />would sprout out somewhere else.<lb />Before we knew it, it was like the<lb />plague. ?<lb /><lb />Bryant said voter apathy has<lb />infested black communities since<lb />1968. In the late 1960s and early<lb />1970s, black people started becom-<lb />ing complacent about their living<lb />situations, he said; people felt like<lb />the struggle for justice was over.<lb /><lb /> oWe believed deep down in our<lb /><lb />hearts that we had overcome, ? he<lb />said.<lb /><lb />Bryant said voter apathy has<lb />not only become a burglar to black<lb />communities; It also has become a<lb />murderer.<lb /><lb /> oHe is a.murderer because he<lb />has killed the dreams of our young<lb />African American children and<lb />made them feel like the only thing<lb />that they doin Fayetteville, andin<lb />Durham and Greensboro and in<lb />Goldsboro is pick up garbage and<lb />shoot basketball and rap and make<lb />babies, ? he said.<lb /><lb /> oHe has been a murderer who<lb />has killed off our vision. I Tm glad<lb />he Ts dead because he Ts a racist.<lb />He Ts erased us of our self-esteem<lb />and made us feel like we are less<lb />than who we are. ?<lb /><lb />The Rev. I was telling<lb />his widow today, ~I Tm proud to say<lb />today that we're going to bury voter<lb />apathy T, ? said Matthews.<lb /><lb /> oThis is a closed casket funeral.<lb />We're going to drop him so low<lb />that he will never rise again. No<lb />longer will you be able to make<lb />excuses about not voting. ?<lb /><lb />In conclusion, Matthews said,<lb /> oEveryone who chooses not to vote<lb />should join voter apathy in the<lb />casket and they can be buried too. ?<lb /><lb />The Power of the Black vote<lb /><lb />Hundreds Flock to<lb />Registration Booths to<lb /> ~Make A Difference T<lb /><lb />By Alvin Peabody<lb /><lb />When the Rev. Yet,<lb />as the 1996 U.S. presidential elec-<lb />tion nears, Jackson and other<lb />Black political leaders are saying<lb />that there are still millions more<lb />Blacks who are registered to vote.<lb /><lb /> oIf we want to make a difference<lb />in our own lives, I think we ought<lb />to register and vote, ? said Rev.<lb />Walter E. Greenville TV Charge<lb /><lb />Why the<lb />Black Man<lb />marched on<lb />Washington<lb /><lb />There has been much debate and<lb />dialogue within the white media<lb />since the Million Man March as to<lb />its true meaning. A paramount<lb />fixation of the politicians and pun-<lb />dits is who and what really orga-<lb />nized the march. Reverend Jesse<lb />Jackson insisted it was Newt<lb />Gingrich and Clarence Thomas.<lb />The Jewish establishment said it<lb />was demagoguery. Bill Clinton<lb />said it was indifference to racism.<lb />And Minister Louis Farrakhan,<lb />whose resonating call for atone-<lb />ment and rejuvenation struck a<lb />deep chord in Black America, said<lb />it was the Almighty.<lb /><lb />Here Ts still another candidate:<lb />the complete failure of white-led<lb />American liberalism and its politi-<lb />cal instrument, the Democratic<lb />Party, to deliver on its promise to<lb />solve the race problem in America.<lb /><lb />Minister Farrakhan quite point-<lb />edly and properly reminded us of<lb />the findings of the Kerner Com-<lb />mission 30 years ago "that there<lb />were two separate and unequal<lb />societies, one Black and one white,<lb />one destitute and one with oppor-<lb />tunity. In response, the country Ts<lb />leading political, cultural, and so-<lb />cial institutions undertook to close<lb />that gap and to conduct a massive<lb />War on Poverty, enacting and en-<lb />forcing legislation to close the ra-<lb />cial divide and create a Great So-<lb />ciety.<lb /><lb />The primary vehicle for accom-<lb />plishing this was, of course, the<lb />Democratic Party. Skillfully meld-<lb />ing the ideological and the practi-<lb />cal (the shrewdest of Democrats<lb />believed that an expanded and<lb />energized Black electorate could<lb />propel the party to greater politi-<lb />cal victories and control of the bur-<lb />geoning welfare state), the Demo-<lb />crats went to owar. ? But unlike<lb />other wars Americans had fought,<lb />where total victory was the only<lb />option, the War on Poverty was<lb />short-lived. While millions and mil-<lb />lions of dollars poured into an anti-<lb />poverty infrastructure that sprang<lb />up almost overnight, and innova-<lb />tive education approaches like<lb />Head Start were installed in every<lb />Black community, the War on Pov-<lb />erty programs quickly became pa-<lb />tronage mills and political bases<lb />for a new generation of mostly<lb />Democratic politicians. Eradicat-<lb />ing poverty was no longer a moral<lb />and social crusade for the liberal<lb />establishment. It became a became<lb />a highly politicized "and highly<lb />profitable " game.<lb /><lb />In 1968, with the war in Viet-<lb />nam claiming greater and greater<lb />commitment and national re-<lb />sources than the War on Poverty,<lb />and with the Democratic Party<lb />rocked by internal battles over<lb />Black participation (As early as<lb />1964 Fannie Lou Hamer led the<lb />Mississippi Freedom Democratic<lb />Party delegates to the national<lb />convention that year and faced<lb />down a thoroughly racist and un-<lb />compromising national party lead-<lb />ership), white America struck<lb />back. White Democrats (known as<lb />Dixiecrats) deserted in droves to<lb />vote for Alabama Governor George<lb />Wallace who ran an overtly anti-<lb />Black campaign as an indepen-<lb />dent presidential candidate and<lb />polled 10 million votes. That de-<lb />sertion sufficiently undercut the<lb />Democratic presidential bid of lib-<lb />eral Hubert Humphrey, and Re-<lb />publican Richard Nixon was<lb />elected President of the United<lb />States.<lb /><lb />The liberal Democrats were<lb />stung. Racism was alive and well<lb />and kicking back against any no-<lb />tion that the country might heal<lb />the great divide. Ever more con-<lb />cerned with their own<lb />selfperpetuation than with doing<lb />what must be done to carry forth<lb />the political and economic wars<lb />against white supremacy, the<lb />Democrats not only buried Dr.<lb />Martin Luther King, Jr., but his<lb />dream as a driving force for pro-<lb />gressive social change in America<lb />as well. The subtext of the mes-<lb />sage of Minister L ouis Farrakhan<lb />and the million Black men who<lb />came to hear him and stand beside<lb />him was that Dr. King Ts legacy<lb />does not count in the United States<lb />of America of the 1990s. Itis tragic.<lb />It is painful. But it is true. And<lb />those who championed the cause<lb />of Dr. King "the liberals who<lb />promised Black America that its<lb />time would come, turned out to<lb />have neither the moral resolve nor<lb />the political will to carry it through.<lb />Is Black America bitter, angry and<lb />isolated as a result? Indeed we<lb />are. And Minister Farrakhan is<lb />the righteous messenger of that<lb />anger. I am not a Muslim nor a<lb />religious person. I am, however, as<lb />a deeply spiritual person, moved<lb />by the Minister as a messenger of<lb />history. And while the white me-<lb />dia, political experts and detrac-<lb />tors "Black and white "may con-<lb />tinue to denigrate his message as<lb />one of hate, they are wrong. His<lb />message is not one of hate, but of<lb />brutally honest acceptance. More<lb />than any other major Black leader<lb />in the country today, he has ac-<lb />rite that the white liberal es-<lb />tablishment "supposedly the<lb />Black community Ts greatest<lb />coalitional ally "is bankrupt. It<lb />sacrificed us at the altar of politi-<lb />cal expediency. And there is no<lb />way forward for themor with them.<lb /><lb />ay<lb /><lb /> " |<lb /></p>
