          <lb />Putting On Our Marching Shoes...<lb />Million Man Marck<lb />Monday, October 16, 1995 - Be There!<lb /><lb />WEEK OF ENDING OCTOBER 13, 1995<lb /><lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA'S MINORITY VOICE - SINCE 1981<lb /><lb />School Choice: It Ts not a<lb />matter of black and white<lb /><lb />Comes now word of the continu-<lb />ing progress of school choice. Three<lb />American cities have released<lb />plans for new or expanded pro-<lb />grams of parental choice of shcools.<lb />And not surprisingly, the driving<lb />force in each case has been a black<lb />person. In two of the three, a<lb />female black person. And thereby<lb />hangs a tale.<lb /><lb />But first, the essentials.<lb /><lb />The Wisconsin legislature has<lb />boted to expand Milwaukee Ts<lb />school-choice program, now in its<lb />fifth year, to include religious<lb />schools and toincrease enrollment<lb />from about 1.00 to 15,000 students<lb />next year. The Milwaukee experi-<lb />ment is the product of a rare dis-<lb />play of courage and determination<lb />by Polly Williams, a mother of four<lb />who refused to accept for her<lb />younger children more of the edu-<lb />cational neglect her older children<lb />had experienced in that city Ts<lb />schools.<lb /><lb />She enrolled her children in pri-<lb />vate schools, paid from her wages<lb />as a single working mother. Then<lb />she ran for the Wisconsin legisla-<lb />ture, was elected on aschool-choice<lb />platform and joined forces with<lb />Gov. Tommy Thompson to push<lb />through the nation Ts first signifi-<lb />cant school-choice program.<lb /><lb />An issue that crosses<lb /><lb />traditional political lines<lb />The political dynamics make<lb /><lb />what happened in Milwaukee of<lb />more than passing interest. Will-<lb />iams is a Democrat. She headed<lb />Jesse Jackson Ts Wisconsin cam-<lb />paign in 1984 and 1988. Thomp-<lb />son is a two-term Republican gov-<lb />ernor, aleading GOP conservative<lb />and a staunch advocate of school<lb />reform. The bond between the two<lb />was forged by a common concern<lb />for the welfare of the children of<lb />Milwaukee Ts poor families, who<lb />were consigned to the city Ts public<lb />schools iwth no means of escape.<lb />No, that Ts not so. They could es-<lb />cape: Their families could move to<lb />another school district or the chil-<lb />dren couldenrollin private schools.<lb />And nothing stood in the way of<lb />either except money.<lb />Representative Williams and<lb />Governor Thompson noticed that<lb />few of Milwaukee Ts black citizens<lb />were affluent, so they set out to<lb />find another way. School choice.<lb />In Cleveland, the story is simi-<lb />lar. Fanny Lewis is a first term<lb />member of the City Council who<lb />became an apt pupil of Polly Will-<lb />iams and persuaded the citizens of<lb />Cleveland and Ohio Republican<lb />Gov. George Voinovich to rescue<lb />2,100 of the city Ts poor children.<lb />They may now attend the schools<lb />of their choice, whether private,<lb />public or parochial. The scholar-<lb />ship award for each child is $2,500.<lb />The story in Washington is per-<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />haps the most arresting and the<lb />most promising for the growth of<lb />the school-choice movement. The<lb />plan put forward by the District of<lb />Columbia Ts leadership and en-<lb />dorsed by Superintendent of<lb />Schools Franklin Smith is designed<lb />to rescue low-income children in<lb />failing schools. It has been en-<lb />dorsed by Mayor Marion Barry<lb />and in this I kid you not, by the<lb />Washington Post, which, until this<lb />historic moment, has been a re-<lb />lentless foe of school choice in any<lb />form.<lb /><lb />Black leadership is not<lb />surprising<lb /><lb />Nathan Glazer, a highly re-<lb />spected education analyst, cap-<lb />tures the essential truth about the<lb />quality of schools we provide for<lb />the black children in our large<lb />cities. oConstitutional law often<lb />moves along strange and circui-<lb />tous paths, Glazer writes. oBut<lb />perhaps the strangest yet has been<lb />the one whereby beginning with<lb />an effort to expand freedom-no<lb />black child shall be excluded from<lb />any public school because of his<lb />race-the law has ended with a dras-<lb />tic a restriction of freedom as we<lb />have seen in this country in recent<lb />years: no child of any race or group<lb />may escape or flee the school to<lb />which that child has been assigned<lb />on the basis of his or her race. <lb /><lb />WOOW PERSONALITY, MS. Explored here are<lb />the intricate workings of a South-<lb />ern Black Baptist clan and the<lb />impact of family and community<lb />norms and expectations on Black<lb />men in general, and in the specific<lb />cases of two cousins: Reverend<lb />James Lalachal Green and<lb />younger Horace Thomas Cross.<lb /><lb />Keenan Ts surrealistic writing<lb />style uses saints, sinners, and sor-<lb />cerers to share in the storytelling-<lb />the supernatural mixing with the<lb />mundane works so effectively that,<lb />at times, the reader will have dif-<lb />ficulty distinguishing reality from<lb />fantasy. This is particularly true<lb />in the telling of Horace Ts story.<lb />Whetherd it is the influences of<lb />the Old Testament,.J.R.R. Tolkien,<lb />or Marvel Comics, the 16-year-old<lb />Horace hears the voice of othe de-<lb />mon he has conjured by using a<lb />potion consisting of cat Ts urine,<lb />the whole head of ahummingbird,<lb />the stale breath of a hag three-<lb />score andten, and the ground tooth<lb />of a leviathan-or reasonable fac-<lb />simile thereof. That demon takes<lb />Horace and the reader back for a<lb />closer look at those turning points<lb />in the boy's coming of age as a<lb />man-loving man in asociety where<lb /> ofe the way Horace want/¥t ain Tt<lb />condoned, you know tpn <lb /><lb />Widower Jimmy Greet¥s story<lb />unfolds through memories of his<lb />experiences with his well-bred, red<lb />bone wife, Anne. While Jimmy Ts<lb />character is used to add a more<lb />realistic narrative voice to illumi-<lb />nate the inner workings of the<lb />Cross family and to chronicle the<lb />events of Horace Ts tortured life,<lb />there are also glimpses of his own<lb />unresol Ted issues regarding his<lb />sexuality and his reasons for en-<lb />tering tie ministry.<lb /><lb />In a scene where Horace con-<lb />fronts hs cousin after Sunday ser-<lb />vice to diicuss his fear that he may<lb /><lb />indeed beirrevocably homosexual,<lb />Jimmy rsponds by telling him,<lb /> oHorace, ve've all done alittle..you<lb />know..experimenting. Kenan<lb />offers, oGracie Mae Mayfield be-<lb />came his steady. He even had sex<lb />with her afew times. Yet, Horace Ts<lb />long-standing attraction to Gideon<lb />Stone, the pre-pubescent class<lb />sissy who in adolescence grows<lb />into an intellectual with a well-<lb />defined frame, does not dissipate<lb />regardless of his prayers. It is to<lb />Gideon that Horace ownites about<lb />twenty-three letters drafts actu-<lb />ally, before finally finding a suit-<lb />able way to tell hime that he loves<lb />him-if, in fact, there is a suitable<lb />way in this society for one teenage<lb />boy to tell another that he loves<lb />him. Thankfully, Gideon is of the<lb />same mindset and, for a time at<lb />least, the two boys develop a spe-<lb />cial friendship. But later, in ascene<lb />setin the boys locker room of South<lb />York County High School, Gideon<lb />makes a sexual advance to Horace-<lb /><lb />"I'm aman who<lb />perceives life in a<lb />certain way; a<lb />man who rejects<lb />things that<lb />defecate on<lb /><lb />mankind. <lb />Harry Belafonte<lb /><lb />Mrs. Beatrice<lb />Maye<lb /><lb />Page 2<lb /><lb />OOTLTTAY<lb />News<lb />Page 3<lb /><lb />Youth<lb />Speaks Out<lb />Page 6<lb /><lb />who since has decided that, in-<lb />deed, the Lord does mind-only to<lb />find himself nursing a busted lip.<lb />This is unfortunate since Gideon<lb />1s the only Black man with whom<lb />Horace has sex at any point in the<lb />novel<lb /><lb />Another Black<lb />Hor:<lb /><lb />man catches<lb />later when he<lb />takes a summer job at the local<lb />theatre. Romantically<lb />speaking, it Ts a sorry state of af-<lb />fairs for black gay men in fiction as<lb />well as real life these days.<lb /><lb />But never mind romance, let Ts<lb />look at Horacé Ts central support<lb />network. Three<lb />important gifts to share with, your<lb />children are these: 1. The first gift<lb />is that of a happy home and the<lb />underlined word here is happy.<lb />Homes should be a haven to which<lb />children gladly return, rather than<lb />a prison from which they yearn to<lb />escape. Parents are 98 percent re-<lb /><lb />sponsible for creating that happi-<lb />ness. Out of these ingredients<lb />comes a happy home.<lb /><lb />2. The second gift comes right<lb />out of this. It is your gift to your<lb />child of self-esteem. You raise that<lb />child in such a way that he be-<lb />lieves he is of value. You speak to<lb />her and share with her in such a<lb />way that she believes down deep<lb />that she is lovable and capable - a<lb />child of God Ts spirit in her!<lb /><lb />3. And the third gift: Personal<lb />example. Personal example<lb />is the bottom line of parental strat:<lb />egy. The toughest problems some<lb />children face are those of learning<lb />good manners without ever seeing<lb />any, learning to be good citizens,<lb />respecting law and order, without<lb />guns and weapons, good church<lb />men and women with character,<lb />morals and values, good husbands<lb />and wives, without the benefit of<lb /><lb />Oh III III II II<lb /><lb />MMM MY YM YM MM<lb /><lb />Wote For<lb /><lb />Chuck AUTRY<lb />City Council At-Large<lb /><lb />on November 7<lb />A Voice for All People<lb /><lb />Pd. for Committee to Elect Chuck Autry<lb /><lb />FOI IOI I IIIA I AID IO<lb /><lb />OO OL OF<lb /><lb />personal éxample from mom and<lb />dad. <lb />Randall Kenan is a man who<lb />can tell a waiter oI'll eschew the<lb />appetizer and write about hog<lb />killings so vividly that his readers<lb />will never feel the same toward<lb />him again.<lb /><lb />His first novel oA Visitation of<lb />Spirits was published last month<lb />amid a fair amount of acclaim and<lb />the University of North Carolina<lb />alum has returned to Chapel Hill<lb />this week to sign books and give<lb />readings. He appears to be taking<lb />it all in stride.<lb /><lb />Certainly anyone who says oes-<lb />chew to a waiter would.<lb /><lb />Setin a tiny Eastern North Caro-<lb />lina town called Tims Creek, Mr.<lb />Kenan Ts novel is full of allusive<lb />language-biblical, demonic, liter-<lb />ary-and jarringly clear descrip-<lb />tions of Southern country life.<lb /><lb />In the hog passage he writes:<lb /> oThen someone will take a great<lb />silver knife and make a thin true<lb />line down the belly of the beast,<lb />from the rectum to the top of its<lb />throat. He will make an incision at<lb />the top and with a wet and ripping<lb />sound like the bursting of a water-<lb />melon, the creature will be split<lb />clear in two, its delicate organs<lb />spilling down like vomit, the fine<lb />shiny sacs waiting there to be cut<lb />loose, one by one. <lb /><lb />And his descriptions of aunts<lb />are particularly clear and evoca-<lb />tive: oRachel. Rebecca. Ruthester.<lb />His Aunt racehl was his favorite.<lb />Her skin was cinnamon and gin-<lb />e had a rebellious spirit,<lb />uncensored and harsh. Whatever<lb />came to her mind, she said; what-<lb />ever she felt, she expressed. She<lb />was the youngest... <lb /><lb />Throughout the book two plots<lb />are simultaneously woven: One<lb />story line is about a black homo-<lb />sexual teen, Horace, who is tor-<lb />tured by real and imaginary de-<lb />The other concerns a crisp<lb />day in December when James, a<lb />preacher, James takes his Aunt<lb />Ruth and Uncle Zeke to<lb />Fayetteville to visit Aunt Ruth Ts<lb />dying husband.<lb /><lb />[t might be said that Mr. Kenan<lb />owes much to aunts, of which in<lb />reality and in his novel, he seems<lb />to have plenty.<lb /><lb />Mr. Kenan was raised by his<lb />Aunt Mary Kenan Hall, to whom<lb />he has dedicated his novel " ~ oto<lb /><lb />ger. Sh<lb /><lb />mons<lb /><lb />one who made a way out of no<lb />way T "and whom he calls omy<lb />mother. <lb />Although born in Brooklyn,N.Y.,<lb />Mr. Kenan was sent to North Caro-<lb /><lb />lina at an early age to live with his<lb />grandfatherd.<lb /><lb />At any rate, he was to have been<lb />raised by his grandfather. But his<lb />Aunt Mary, like many of his fe-<lb />male characters, knew what she<lb />wanted and acted upon it swiftly<lb />decisively: One weekend he<lb /><lb />to visit Aunt Mary. Aunt<lb />mary kept him.<lb /><lb />tis grandfather and grand-<lb />r, who were obusy with their<lb />caning business, eventually<lb /><lb />and<lb /><lb />went<lb /><lb />a<lb /> ~ esced "and the re he stayed,<lb />on his Aunt Mary Ts farm.<lb /><lb />Hence the hogs.<lb /><lb />Atany rate, Mr. Kenan, 26, grew<lb /><lb />up a wonderfully thoughtful young<lb />man in both senses of the word. He<lb />apologizes profusely for having<lb />been « Ol nly minutes late, and ex-<lb />poun ds about racism , religion and<lb />plot andcharacter " allover aplate<lb />of ba iked grouper and okra at<lb />Crook Ts Corner.<lb /><lb /> oOne thing that strikes me now<lb />is the way the races interact, he<lb />says. oIt is a subtle, complex and<lb />key dynamic that we need to un-<lb />derstand. At this point in our coun-<lb />try it is vital that we understand<lb />what we are doing. It seems if we<lb />don Tt there would be only two<lb />things todo: Exterminate all blacks<lb />or for all blacks to rise up in arms.<lb />And that would be a tragedy. <lb /><lb />And writing, he says, ois always<lb />tension be ~tween character and<lb />plot. It begins with a question. To<lb />answer that question you need two<lb />more questions and it grows and<lb />grows exponentially. <lb /><lb />Then he gives a hoot of laughter<lb />at himself and says oYou've got me<lb />going tonight, must be the wine. <lb /><lb />But he says he is not all seri-<lb />ous "while at UNC-Chapel Hill<lb />he was active in the Comic Book<lb />Club. and oI guess when you go to<lb />college there Ts a choice, social or<lb />academic. Coming from a small<lb />town I guess I chose social. Who<lb />wouldn't? <lb /><lb />But that is hard to believe.<lb /><lb />In fact, when he left his home-<lb />town of Chinquapin and came to<lb />Chapel Hill he was determine to<lb />be a physics major. UNC English<lb />professor Max Steele anda stint at<lb />Oxford University set him right.<lb /> oWell, really, by the time I went to<lb />Oxford it hadcrystallized that this<lb />was what I really wanted to do, he<lb />says.<lb /><lb /> oActually I was going to majorin<lb />physics and I had an interest in<lb />science fiction so I wound up in<lb />Max's class and he doesn Tt like<lb />science fiction. Mr. Kenan<lb />dropped physics as his major,<lb />graduated in December 1984 "<lb />early "and omade a beeline for<lb />New York City. Well, I packed<lb />first, he says, and laughs.<lb /><lb />BRrtar the earand aunt who in.<lb /><lb />fluenced him.<lb /><lb />Before he left North Carolina,<lb />he says, he went to visit his great-<lb />aunt Erie "who has never left the<lb />state of North Carolina.<lb /><lb />He told her he had nomoney and<lb />no prospects and certainly no place<lb />to stay in New York City, where he<lb />needed to go to make his fortune<lb />as a writer.<lb /><lb />Aunt Erie, he says, okind of tsked<lb />and picked up the phone and called<lb />her sons and grandsons. She has<lb />10, well, 10 living "she probably<lb />has more. And within 20 minutes,<lb />she didn Tt ask, she TOLD one that<lb />I was coming to New York and I<lb />was to stay with him in Newark.<lb />And she made sure Newark was<lb />close enough to New York. <lb /><lb />Vivian D.
