JOHNSON<lb /><lb />For the first time in the history<lb />of the Progressive National Con-<lb />vention, Inc., the annual session<lb /><lb />Affirmative Action<lb /><lb />was held in the great state of<lb />North Carolina. Progressive Bap-<lb />tists convened in Charlotte, from<lb />August 7th thru the 12th, at the<lb />new Convention Center, where<lb />President Clinton was in atten-<lb />dance speaking out the negative<lb />aspects of the tobacco industry<lb />which he felt by being in the To-<lb />bacco belt, this event would make<lb />a definite impact. Pre-convention<lb />services began Sunday, August<lb />6th, at 5:00 p.m. at the Mayfield<lb />Memorial Baptist Church, where<lb />Rev. Harold Diggs is the Pastor.<lb />Other than the fact that the<lb />President chose this arena to be<lb />his personal platform, one of the<lb />highlights of the convention was<lb />on Thursday, August 10th in<lb />which we at the Daily Drum are<lb />proud to report when honors were<lb />bestowed upon the National Presi-<lb />dent, Deacon Benjamin F.<lb />Johnson, a native of Greenville.<lb />Deacon Johnson is married to the<lb /><lb />What have you done<lb />for me lately?<lb /><lb />A rece relations experiment be-<lb />gun by President John Kennedy<lb />after he noticed an all-White Coast<lb />Guard Academy band marching<lb />past the White House during his<lb />inaugural parade over 30 years<lb />ago has created the latest fuss in<lb />American politics. After calling the<lb />academy and insisting that the<lb />band Ts racial policy be changed,<lb />President Kennedy began an ex-<lb />ecutive effort to offer hope to<lb />Blacks in government. Since the<lb />unforgettable act, every President<lb />since has added or shifted empha-<lb />sis (Nixon brought in women) but<lb /><lb />continued what is now called af-:<lb /><lb />firmative action.<lb /><lb />When Republicans won control<lb />of Congress for the first time in 40<lb />years, one of their first do-away-<lb />with targets to balance the bud-<lb />get was affirmative action which<lb />has grown to more than 160 indi-<lb />vidual programs. The underlying<lb />GOP contention was that U.S.<lb />minorities, with access to such<lb />programs, enjoyed an unfair ad-<lb />vantage over White men in gain-<lb />ing employment, education, and<lb />even federal contracts.<lb /><lb />With the racial climate being<lb /><lb />CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. AND MRS. TERRY<lb /><lb />like it is, few clergy, lawmakers or<lb />civic leaders voiced concern. Ac-<lb />cording to the New York Time/CBS<lb />poll, most Americans object to<lb />Blacks being given preferences in<lb />jobs and college admission, but<lb />didn Tt mind the advantages being<lb />given to White women. The pub-<lb />lic also believes, like the politi-<lb />cians, that Blacks dominate the<lb />fruits of the present affirrnative<lb /><lb />z action.<lb /><lb /> oYou got to be Black nowadays<lb />to get a job or a college degree ? is<lb />a common work-place epithet.<lb /> oGet with the facts, ? argue the<lb />program Ts Black supporters. oThis<lb />program could go up in smoke be-<lb />cause of misguided thinking. ?<lb /><lb /> oWhite Women have been the<lb />biggest beneficiaries, ? asserts Dr.<lb />Mary Berry, a prminent college<lb />professor and chairman of the U.S.<lb />Commission on Civil Rights, at-<lb />tempting to calm down<lb />opponenets who base their evalu-<lb />ations on emotion rather than fact.<lb /><lb /> oBlack women certainly haven Tt<lb />kept pace with the White women<lb />and neither have Black men, ? ar-<lb />gues Atty. Deacon Johnson<lb />serves as a Deacon at the Mount<lb /><lb />Pleasant Baptist Church in Wash-<lb />ington, D.C. where the Rev. He has tremendous<lb />capacity for meaningful work, and<lb />has been instrumental in bonding<lb />men throughout the country and<lb /><lb />abroad. Laymen are strong sup-<lb />porters of the convention they<lb />love; they are committed to Evan-<lb />gelism/Street Ministry and Adopt-<lb />A-School program. In keeping<lb />with the biblical mandate to evan-<lb />gelize, Laymen hit the streets in<lb />every city where the Convention<lb />meets; Street ministry is key in<lb />the minds and hearts of Laymen.<lb /><lb />f<lb /><lb />EP ISR RA RS<lb /><lb />The President of the Progressive<lb />National Baptist Convention, Inc.,<lb />is esteemed Dr. Bennett W. After<lb />a week Ts Revival Service, the<lb />name of the church was given by<lb />the Holy Spirit.The Lord directed<lb />sisters Marie Goings and Thelma<lb />Burnett to the building where the<lb />church was to be, which is now its<lb />present location. With the help of<lb />Willie Goings, Willie Burnett,<lb />Cora Powell, Gerald Bonds and<lb />Arcennie Hopkins, the work on the<lb />building began as soon as the<lb />rental agreement was received<lb />from the owners. Sister Goings,<lb />Brother and Sister Burnett do-<lb />nated their time to get the paint,<lb />curtains, floor cleaners, and all<lb />that was needed to get the church<lb />started. The carpet was a gift<lb />given by Maurice Dixon and the<lb />plexiglas pulpit was donated by<lb />Tom Brandon. Our first $5.00 of-<lb />fering was given by a passing<lb />drunk who was glad we were go-<lb />ing to have a church located in the<lb />heart of downtown Greenville,<lb />where he and others like himself<lb />could come for refuge and deliver-<lb />ance. Our first tithers were<lb />Brother and Sister Willie and<lb />Thelma Burnett, Sister Cora<lb />Powell, Sister Marie Goings, Sis-<lb />ter Arcennie Hopkins and Sister<lb />Geraldine Langley.<lb /><lb />As the Lord began to seed his<lb />people into this fellowship, the<lb />body of Christ grew from religion<lb />to a real relationship with the<lb />Lord Jesus Christ. ~We stand on<lb />the Word (Acts 2:47) that the Lord<lb />Jesus Christ will and has added<lb />to the church daily such as should<lb />be saved. from day one we have<lb />allowed the Spirit of God to direct<lb />our path and have never diverted<lb />to the traditions of man by open-<lb />ing the doors of the church for<lb />membership. Nevertheless, the<lb />Spirit of God is given a free course<lb />and Sunday after Sunday, we have<lb />experienced the hand of God mov-<lb />ing in our midst by ministering to<lb />a full house of seekers that need<lb />and want to be delivered.<lb /><lb />God, in his omniscience power,<lb />never ceases to amaze us. We<lb />stand in awe of His greatness, His<lb />love and his grace. Souls have been<lb />saved, bodies healed from termi-<lb />nal illnesses, broken spirits and<lb />many other afflictions. Many have<lb />received homes, cars, financial<lb />blessings making them debt free,<lb />new clothing, jobs, spouses, etc.,<lb />dust to name a few. However, the<lb />real blessing has come to those<lb />who desire is to walk closely with<lb />God. We have come out of religion<lb />into a real one-on-one relationship<lb />with God. Many of the City Ts drug<lb />dealers and users have come into<lb />Tabernacle Center hurting, look-<lb />ing for a change and trying to find<lb />out what goes on behind the red<lb />curtains that hangs in the front<lb />windows. Once inside, they hear<lb />the Word, receive it and give their<lb />lives to the Lord. In the past two<lb />months, the Spirit of God has<lb />drawn five young men, who were<lb />avaricious drug sellers, drug us-<lb />ers and women chasers into Tab-<lb />ernacle and they have surren-<lb />dered their lives to the Lord. They<lb />had seen the Word bring about<lb /><lb />great changes in former friends<lb />and they too want to become par-<lb />takers of this new life. We recently<lb />baptized ten new converts and<lb />another baptismal service is<lb />scheduled for the very near future.<lb /><lb />The Lord has blessed Taber-<lb />nacle Center with everything we<lb />need to conduct services which<lb />includes teaching the Word, coun-<lb />seling, voice lessons, prayer, chil-<lb />dren church, and a new convert<lb />class. A television was donated to<lb />enhance the children Ts ministry.<lb />We have also purchased a calcu-<lb />lator and typewriter for record<lb />keeping and correspondence. We<lb />have a complete set of drums, an<lb />organ, and a AMDEK Video-300<lb />computer and printer, which was<lb />a donation to the church. God has<lb />blessed us with an addition key-<lb />board to accompany our choirs, we<lb />now have a children Ts choir and a<lb />fifteen passenger van which has<lb />been bringing new souls to Taber-<lb />nacle almost every Sunday. Our<lb />beautifully decorated P Tastor Ts<lb />Study has been used a lot to make<lb />preparations for our new Church,<lb />the clothes clopet and food bank<lb />have and is still blessing those in<lb />need of our help. We are also now<lb />involved in helping the Homeless<lb />Shelter with food and other<lb />needed items. On February 3,<lb />1993, the Lord blessed us to start<lb /><lb />a Radio Ministry which is still in<lb />full swing and people are continu-<lb />ally being blessed in their homes,<lb />the workplace, and the prison sys-<lb />tem, and on September 26, 1993,<lb />the Ministry was expanded to a<lb />second radio station. The Bread<lb />Box Ministry can be heard Mon-<lb />day - Friday at 8:20 on WOOW Joy<lb />1340 and Monday, Wednesday and<lb />Friday at 9:00 on WGTM 590 Wil-<lb />son covering 33 counties. With the<lb />Lord Ts help, we are winning many<lb />souls by airwaves.<lb /><lb />Last year we mentioned the<lb />land the Lord has blessed us with,<lb />well, on August 4, 1993 we signed<lb />the deed to purchase the land at<lb />the corners of Dickinson Avenue,<lb />Fourteenth and Chestnut Streets.<lb />The land also includes two brick<lb />homes which help generate funds<lb />toward the construction of our new<lb />Church. Our architectural plans<lb />are in the final stages of comple-<lb />tion and we are looking forward<lb />to building the new Tabernacle<lb />Center of Deliverance, Inc. at its<lb />new location this year. The Lord<lb />has given us all the support and<lb />guidance we need to get the job<lb />done that He has charged us with.<lb />Our vision has become a reality. .<lb />. It should begin<lb />construction this winter.<lb /><lb />Downtown Washington now has<lb />a new appearence. We are proudof<lb />the revitialization and facade pro-<lb />gram in the downtown area. By the age of 10,<lb />almost all Americans get exposed to<lb />the virus that causes chickenpox.<lb /><lb />There are a number of steps, how-<lb />ever, that you can take to treat the<lb />symptoms of the virus, says NARD,<lb />the national association representing<lb />independent retail pharmacy.<lb /><lb />© First, know the symptoms. Al-<lb />though chickenpox occurs year-<lb />round, most cases appear in the late<lb />winter and throughout the spring.<lb />You can catch the virus if you are<lb />near an infected person who sneezes<lb />or coughs.<lb /><lb />The symptoms, which last between<lb />three and 10 days, appear about two<lb />weeks following exposure. You or your<lb />child may develop a mild fever and flu-<lb />like symptoms that include loss of ap-<lb />petite, tiredness, sore throat and aching<lb />muscles. A day or two later, the telltale<lb />rash will appear. Generally, the rash<lb />spreads from the face to the body, then<lb />to the arms and legs. Within a few<lb />hours, the itchy, red spots become blis-<lb />ters that eventually crust over.<lb /><lb />@ Second, as soon as symptoms<lb />appear, visit your family physician<lb />and pharmacist. If left untreated,<lb />chickenpox can become serious,<lb />causing pneumonia and other com-<lb />plications. Also, if you are pregnant,<lb />elderly or have a weakened immune<lb />system because of other health prob-<lb />lems, you will need to take extra pre-<lb />cautions.<lb /><lb />shi<lb /><lb />1124 WEST 3KO ST.<lb />AYDEN, NC 28513<lb /><lb />HOURS: TUES. <lb />By Jeff Keller<lb />For News USA<lb /><lb />(NU) - Long ago, before wash-<lb />ing machines and dry cleaning, we<lb />used to clean clothes by brushing.<lb />Depending on the fabric, dirt or liq-<lb />uids could be brushed out, using<lb />boar or other natural bristles.<lb /><lb />Brushing clothes now is consid-<lb />ered something of an art form, and<lb />particularly useful for tailored cloth-<lb />ing that should not be washed.<lb />Brushing also air freshens the fab-<lb />rics, especially those made of natur-<lb />al fibers. and removes dust that<lb />works its way into the fabric. It elim-<lb />inates unsightly lint, dust, hair and<lb />dandruff. Removing them can pre-<lb />serve the life and appearance of the<lb />clothes.<lb /><lb />Brushing takes time, of course,<lb />and often when you're about to head<lb />out the door for an important busi-<lb />ness appointment or social occasion,<lb />there just isn't time. Yet there may<lb />be lingering on your pants, skirt or<lb />lapel that strand of hair, remnant of<lb />cat tur or hint of dandruff that has<lb />to be removed.<lb /><lb />Here are a few ways to remove<lb />items from your clothes:<lb /><lb />@ The company that specializes<lb />in Scotch tape and other sticky<lb />products has an answer " the 3M<lb /><lb />Ethel Mavis Worsley<lb />Owner / Operator<lb /><lb />CAROLYN LATHAM HARDE<lb />FOR CITY COUNCIL<lb /><lb />may ogue<lb /><lb />POD 9095 *:<lb />ye<lb />OREO 3<lb />ot Roe<lb /><lb />x "EMW - SPECIAL OCCASIONS"<lb />Sewing Shop<lb /><lb />Cuts for your designs<lb /><lb />Designs for weddings, banquets & proms, also alterations<lb /><lb />ESPECIALLY FOR THE FULL FIGURE WOMEN<lb />(919) 975-5168<lb /><lb />If it Ts a special occasion, then make it Special Occasions<lb /><lb />A VOTE FOR ME<lb />IS A VOTE FOR YOU<lb /><lb />Large Stock of Carp<lb />Vinyl and Remnants for<lb />Residential and Commercial<lb /><lb />AROUND THE HOUSE<lb />faa Removing Lint, Hair<lb />wae Can Preserve Clothes<lb /><lb />Pat-it Line and Pet Hair Remover.<lb />It can save your power suit. It fits<lb />into a glove compartment, purse,<lb />pocket, suitcase or briefcase, and it Ts<lb />a lot less time-intensive than brush-<lb />ing.<lb /><lb />You can find it at various stores,<lb />dry cleaners and pet shops. <lb />By Jeff Keller<lb />For News USA<lb /><lb />(NU) - Computers used to be<lb />business machines, meant mostly for<lb />use by the technologically sophisti-<lb />cated. Not anymore. The prolifera-<lb />tion of CD-ROM, on-line services,<lb />and super-slick educational and pro-<lb />ductivity software has made them al-<lb />most as commonplace in American<lb />homes as TVs and telephones.<lb /><lb />Keeping computer screens clean,<lb />however, is a special matter. There<lb />is One constant about the many<lb />makes of computer monitors on the<lb />market today: They are magnets for<lb />dust and lint. Just rub a finger across<lb />any computer screen and you'll see.<lb /><lb />The same 1s true for television<lb />screens, laptops or other electronic<lb />equipment. They attract particles<lb />floating in the air, Fact 1s, many plas-<lb />tic and glass surfaces attract dust that<lb />has to be wiped off. The dust makes<lb />it harder to see, and eventually it can<lb />seep inside the monitor.<lb /><lb />Here are some maintenance tps:<lb /><lb /> " @ You might use a handkerchiet<lb /><lb />ora facial tissue, but these may leave<lb /><lb />AROUND THE HOUSE<lb />Keeping Computer<lb />Screens Clean<lb /><lb />as many particles as they remove. You<lb />could clean computer screens and<lb />anti-glare filters with the 3M Screen<lb />Cleaner Kit, which mounts right to<lb />the side of a computer monitor. The<lb />new screen and optics glass cleaner<lb />safely removes dust, dirt and finger-<lb />prints without streaking. The 3M<lb />wipes serve a dual purpose, clean-<lb />ing the screen and simultaneously<lb />giving it an anti-static treatment.<lb /><lb />e Turn off the machine and use<lb />some glass cleaning solution spar-<lb />ingly. It Ts best to wet a rag or paper<lb />towel with the cleaner rather than<lb />spraying it, thereby avoiding getting<lb />the cleaner on the cabinet or behind<lb />the screen.<lb /><lb />© Some computer Owners use a<lb />can of compressed inert gas for dust<lb />removal. This does not get all the<lb />dust off a screen, due to the magnetic<lb />effect. and some of these products<lb />contain chemicals harmful to the<lb />earth Ts ozone layer.<lb /><lb />Jeff Keller can be heard nation-<lb />wide every Saturday morning on the<lb /> oMr Handyman ? show. <lb />Country home compact, cozy<lb /><lb />(NU) - The Cambridge is that<lb />rare exception to the rule " a<lb />compact country-style home.<lb />Typically, homes with gabled<lb />rooflines, dormer windows and a<lb />wrap-around front porch are in the<lb />medium-size range, out of reach for<lb />first-time homebuyers and far too<lb />large for empty nesters.<lb /><lb />But this plan is designed for<lb />economy and efficient main-<lb />tenance, making it equally well-<lb />suited to the needs of singles,<lb />families with young children, or<lb />couples who've graduated from<lb /> oparenthood to grandparenthood.<lb /><lb />And placement of the front<lb />bedroom, adjacent to the front<lb />porch, makes it an ideal location<lb />for a home office. Relocating the<lb />closet would allow installation of a<lb />door for direct access from the<lb />porch.<lb /><lb />Day-to-day living takes place in<lb />a bright, vaulted family room/<lb />kitchen combination that faces the<lb />rear. Naturally illuminated by sky-<lb />lights, side windows and a high<lb />dormer, this area rarely needs<lb />electrical lighting during daylight<lb />hours.<lb /><lb />Sliding glass doors in the eating<lb />nook open onto a wide deck<lb />allowing meals to move outside<lb /><lb />room, and mark the<lb />the master suite. : milies re fs<lb />brown thumbs can use these<lb />shelves as display space.<lb /><lb />_. Luxury amenities in the master<lb />suite include a large walk-in closet<lb />and. twin basins in a dressing area<lb />separate from the water closet and<lb />shower.<lb /><lb />While the Cambridge lacks a<lb />formal dining room, it does have an<lb />impressive living room with a wide<lb />bay window. Built-in bookcases<lb />flank a wide-hearthed fireplace,<lb />providing display space for family<lb />mementos.<lb /><lb />For a review plan, including<lb />scaled floor plans, elevations,<lb />section and artist Ts conception,<lb />send $15 to Associated Designs,<lb />1100 Jacobs Dr., Eugene, Ore.<lb />97402. T<lb /> oThat Ts Just In Time T T<lb /><lb />David S. Liederman<lb />News USA *<lb /><lb />(NU) - What the politicians and<lb />pundits are saying about welfare re-<lb />form and orphanages might cause<lb />even optimistic Little Orphan Annie<lb />to wonder about tomorrow.<lb /><lb />Let Ts sift out the tall tales and<lb />horror stories from the real facts.<lb /><lb />Fact: Healthy families are still<lb />the best place to raise children. Res-<lb />idential programs, which used to be<lb />known as orphanages, are the wrong<lb />place for children who have a lov-<lb />ing parent capable of caring for<lb />them, and who are not in need of<lb />group care and treatment.<lb /><lb />Fact: Residential programs are<lb />appropriate and necessary for some<lb />children with emotional, psycho-<lb />logical and/or behavioral problems,<lb />generally as a result of abuse or ne-<lb />glect. There are about 100,000 chil-<lb />dren and youth nationwide in resi-<lb />dential care.<lb /><lb />Fact: Orphanages would cost cit-<lb />izens far more than the Aid to Fam-<lb />ilies with Dependent Children and<lb />the Food Stamp programs combined.<lb /><lb />@ AFDC plus Food Stamps for a<lb />parent and two children costs $7,932<lb />a year. The famous Boys Town esti-<lb />mates its residential program costs<lb />$98,558 a year for two children.<lb /><lb />e To provide out-of-home care<lb />for just 3 million of the estimated 9.6<lb />million children on AFDC would<lb /><lb />} Facts From Tall Tales<lb /><lb />cost about $109.5 billion a year. The<lb />cost of AFDC and Food Stamps for<lb />3 million children is about $7.9 bil-<lb />lion.<lb /><lb />Fact: The overwhelming major-<lb />ity of AFDC parents report they<lb />would leave welfare immediately for<lb />minimum wage jobs if they had<lb /><lb />_ health care for their families. How-<lb /><lb />Before we make or-<lb />phanages the fad of<lb />the T90s, let Ts first re-<lb />member that we are<lb />committed to children.<lb /><lb />ever, only 8 percent of people who<lb />leave welfare get jobs that provide<lb />health insurance.<lb /><lb />Before we make orphanages the<lb />fad of the T90s, let Ts first remem-<lb />ber that we are committed to chil-<lb />dren. We must be certain our laws<lb />help children become self-suffi-<lb />cient and offer them an escape from<lb />poverty.<lb /><lb />Residential programs are useful<lb />for some children. But are they sec-<lb />ond best to a real family. Annie<lb />might be the first to agree.<lb /><lb />David S.
