The oddity is that the<lb />church is almost all female. This is<lb />not only true of the black church:<lb />| white churches across America<lb />have, on average an over two-<lb /><lb />ee T a EQUAL BOUE<lb />bogs fel PORT,<lb />Need<lb /><lb />eB<lb /><lb />By oy<lb /><lb />ener SER<lb /><lb />thirds female membership. Many<lb />times the question is posed by the<lb /><lb />young and inexperienced and by<lb />the seasoned and tested-where are<lb />the men?<lb /><lb />The question is often answered<lb />crytically or negatively with spu-<lb />rious comments and suggestions<lb />that they arein the bars, at the dog<lb />track, or on the basketball or enrus<lb />courts. Given the persistent power<lb />and potential of the church and<lb />the strength and inspiration that<lb />is forthcoming from the worship<lb />experience. Itseems odd that more<lb />black men are notin church. Right?<lb />Wrong! Quite frankly, 1 am sur-<lb />prised that the church has as many<lb />men as it does.<lb /><lb />Given the acuteness of this prob-<lb />lem. I want to prayerfully share<lb />with you some of the reasons that<lb />many black men won Tt attend<lb />church. Since it is impossible to<lb />list all the reasons, I will list seven<lb />major reasons based on my experi-<lb />ence, and I will confine my com-<lb />ments principally to the black<lb />Christian church.<lb /><lb />The first reason that many black<lb />men choose not to attend church is<lb />that they find church hypocritical<lb />and untenable. Many black men<lb />are not gainfully employed and<lb />church is a social setting where<lb />many people are more concerned<lb />about what someone is wearing<lb />rather than the substance and rel-<lb />evance of the minister Ts message.<lb />It is frustrating and irntating to<lb /><lb />© 1995 Carolina Telephone &amp; Telegraph Company<lb /><lb />iene<lb /><lb />Sprint<lb /><lb />Carolina Telephone<lb /><lb /> ~of People<lb /><lb />Turns<lb />Impulses<lb />Into Ideas<lb /><lb />Making advanced<lb />communications simple.<lb /> ~Turning technology into<lb />useful tools. For your<lb />home. Your work. Your<lb />life. It's how Sprint<lb />employees like Network<lb />Technician Mike Bushong<lb />give you the power to...<lb />be there now.<lb /><lb />go somewhere and sit for three<lb />hours through song after song, and<lb />announcement after announce-<lb />ment, with someone asking you<lb />for money that you don Tt have;<lb />surrounded by people who aren Tt<lb />seriously trying to commune with<lb />the divine presence anyhow.<lb /><lb />The second reason many black<lb />men don Tt go to church is because<lb />the church has not sought to ac-<lb />commodate men. The church Ts<lb />schedule has remained rigid, pre-<lb />ferring tocompete against the NBA<lb />and NFL for 1:00 p.m. Sunday,<lb />rather starting a little earlier so<lb />people may worship and have their<lb />afternoons open for other personal<lb />and family activities. Many<lb />churches start early but drag the<lb />service on and on, dissipating an<lb />inspirational mood into a tiring,<lb />boring, bondage.<lb /><lb />The third reason is that the pre-<lb />vailing doctrine of today Ts Chris-<lb />tian church is logical to the 20th<lb />century man Ts mind. A theology<lb />that teaches turn the other cheek<lb />when struck; love your enemines;<lb />bless those who persecute you, that<lb />presents a blue-eyed, long, blonde-<lb />haired, effeminate Jesus, that says,<lb /> oJust pray and believe and you<lb />shall receive it, ? runs contrary to<lb />the psyche of an oppressed, re-<lb />jected, abused and disenfranchised<lb />black male.<lb /><lb />Fifth, black males have a prob-<lb />lem with the church setting be-<lb />cause they have a problem with<lb />being submissive. Submission is<lb />the act of yielding to the power of<lb />another. In church, God is great,<lb />all honor goes to him, all glory<lb />belongs to him. His will shall be<lb />done. God is the first and final<lb />authority. Black males live in a<lb />worldin which they are oppressed.<lb />Oppression means you are forced<lb />to be in a submissive role. This is<lb />more difficult than voluntary sub-<lb />mission. Moreover, most black<lb />males are raised in homes where<lb />the consistent, positive, authori-<lb />tative andrelevant male role model<lb />is missing. By the time the male<lb />child is 6 years of age, the mother<lb />is already introducing him as my<lb />little man, or the little man of my<lb />house. The sin of usurping begins.<lb /><lb />The male child appropriates power<lb /><lb />beyond his years and learns<lb />quickly to rebel against authority.<lb />In toomany homes asingle mother<lb />is either too authoritative or not<lb />authoritative enought; thus the<lb />child grows up with an unhealthy<lb />attitude towards submission to<lb />women or anyone else. The result<lb />is a male child that cannot or will<lb />not draw near to God that requires<lb />submission for an authentic rela-<lb />tionship.<lb /><lb />The sixth reason most black<lb />males won Tt go to church is that<lb />they have a problem with the<lb />preachers. In the first place, most<lb />preachers are charismatic and<lb />authoritative. A male who is made<lb />to feel second and inferior all week<lb />does not joyfully seek out another<lb />situation where another man is<lb />over him.<lb /><lb />My seventh reason is the most<lb />important. Many black males won't<lb />go tochurch because today Ts church<lb />does not address their needs. The<lb />black male needs money, job op-<lb />portunities, business resources<lb />and relevant skill training. The<lb />black man needs an economic shot<lb />in the arm. The church collects<lb />money, but dogs little to create<lb />opportunities through which he<lb />can make more money. Jesus un-<lb />derstood the need to feed people<lb />before preaching at them. Today Ts<lb />church must likewise set the table<lb />for the black male before asking<lb />him to pay to have the dishesd<lb />done.<lb /><lb />Men Who God Uses<lb /><lb />1. They are men sincere about<lb />the great commission.<lb /><lb />2. They are men bent on success.<lb /><lb />3. They are men full of faith.<lb /><lb />4, They are men of labor.<lb /><lb />5. They are men of endurance<lb />and patience.<lb /><lb />6. They are men of boldness and<lb />determination.<lb /><lb />7. They are men of prayer.<lb /><lb />8. They are men of sound doc-<lb />trine.<lb /><lb />9. They are men of service.<lb /><lb />10. They are men of spiritual<lb />vision and direction.<lb /><lb />11. They are men of grace, peace<lb />and mercy.<lb /><lb />12. They are men of obedience.<lb /><lb />Rita &amp; Randy Clayton<lb /><lb />100 Pamlico St., Belhaven, N.C. 27810<lb /><lb />(919) 943-3295<lb /><lb />Get Your "M" Voice<lb /><lb />Name<lb /><lb />To get your "M" Voice by mail write to:<lb />The "M" Voice Newspaper<lb />PO Box 8361<lb /><lb />Greenville, NC 27834<lb />SUBSCRIPTION PAYMENT MUST BE INCLUDED WITH ORDER<lb />C) Yes, I'd like a 6 months subscription by mail $15<lb />C) Yes, I'd like a 12 months subscription by mail $30<lb /><lb />Address<lb /><lb />City State<lb /><lb />Zip<lb /><lb />The  ~m T<lb /><lb />Voice<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />The Second Amendment guar-<lb /><lb />antees the right to keep and bear<lb />arms. And yet the United States<lb />Congress has enacted legislation<lb />that infringes on that right; and it<lb />has done so as if those words do not<lb />appear in the Bill of Rights. With<lb />the most inflammatory rhetoric<lb />about stopping crime and disarm-<lb />ing the criminal, a basic constitu-<lb />tional right is being threatened.<lb />Violence thrives in America not<lb />because there are guns, but be-<lb />cause this is a violent society. When<lb />the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,<lb />and Firearms sends agents to the<lb />door of the Branch Davidians T com-<lb />pound in Waco, Texas to serve a<lb />warrant for alleged firearms vio-<lb />lations and stages a  odynamic en-<lb />try T "that Ts Big Government lan-<lb />guage for an armed assault "it is<lb />not only the case that the 2nd<lb />Amendment has been violated, but<lb />that the enforcement of constitu-<lb />tionally questionable firearms<lb />laws are used to perpetuate gov-<lb />ernment violence against its own<lb />people.<lb /><lb />The Fourth Amendment says<lb />that people may be secure in their<lb />persons, houses, papers and ef-<lb />fects against unreasonable search<lb />and seizure. This right has been<lb />abrogated by the  oTake Back Our<lb />Streets ? Act. When it came up for<lb />a vote on the floor of Congress,<lb />Congressman Mel Watt introduced<lb />an amendment which was, in fact,<lb /><lb />the 4th Amendment word for word.<lb />The professional politicians voted<lb />it down. It is no "accident thet it<lb />was a Congressional Black Cau-<lb />cus member who attempted to<lb />block the passage of this Act. Afri-<lb />can Americans are constantly at<lb />risk of having our persons, houses,<lb />papers and effects intruded upon<lb />by police. Itis not only Black Ameri-<lb />cans who are insecure in our<lb />houses. Ask Randy Weaver, whose<lb />wife and son were shot dead by<lb />federal agents on their own prop-<lb />erty, whether the Fourth Amend-<lb />ment is in danger.<lb /><lb />The Eight Amendment prohib-<lb />its  ocruel and unusual punish-<lb />ments. ? And yet the death pen-<lb />alty, a singularly cruel and un-<lb />usual punishment, is being<lb />adopted by more and more states,<lb />and is being made applicable to<lb />more and more federal crimes.<lb />History has proven, beyond a<lb />shadow of a doubt, that capital<lb />punishment does not deter capital<lb />crimes. Then why is our govern-<lb />ment so intent on using it? Be-<lb />cause it has become an symbol of<lb />political authority. The message<lb />is, Big Government has so much<lb />power that it can do anything to<lb />you, and take anything from you,<lb />including your life.<lb /><lb />The Ninth Amendmentsays that<lb /> othe enumeration in the Constitu-<lb />tion, of certain rights, shall not be<lb />construed to deny or disparage<lb />others retained by the people. ? The<lb /><lb />3 10th Amendment says  oThe pow-<lb /><lb />ers not delegated to the United<lb />States by the Constitution, nor<lb />prohibited by the states, are re-<lb />served to the states respectively,<lb />or to the people. ?<lb /><lb /> oTo the people. And to the States.<lb />They are each supposed to have<lb />any and all rights not specifically<lb />given to the federal government.<lb />And yet, when the people of many<lb />States voted overwhelmingly to<lb />adopt term limits for members of<lb />Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court<lb />ruled it unconstitutional and de-<lb />nied the people and the States the<lb />right to impose restrictions and<lb />conditions upon federal elected<lb />officials.<lb /><lb />Big Government is more and<lb />more hostile towards the Bill of<lb />Rights. And when the Bill of Rights<lb />is under attack, the American<lb />People are under attack. I believe<lb />thatif we are to effectively grapple<lb />with the overwhelming crisis fac-<lb />ing our communities, and move<lb />beyond the economic, cultural, and<lb />political stagnation that is affect-<lb />ing our country, we must fight to<lb />preserve the basic liberties that<lb />are part of our political history<lb />and not depend upon the Big Gov-<lb />ernment which takes away our<lb />rights while purporting to act in<lb />our best interest.<lb /><lb />I support the Bill of Rights over<lb />the Bill of Clinton any day of the<lb />week!<lb /><lb />{ "<lb /><lb />ELECT<lb /><lb />Paid For By The Committee To Elect Michael House<lb /><lb />MICHAEL "<lb /><lb />HOUSE<lb /><lb />FOR<lb />MAYOR OF AYDEN<lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />Seafood - Meats -<lb />Salad Bar - Dessert - Beverage<lb /><lb />Presents<lb /><lb />CHEF RAYMOND TS LUNCH i3UFFET |<lb />Monday - Friday 11:00am - 2:00pm<lb /><lb />Vegetables -<lb /><lb />$ 6 e 0 0 Includes Tax<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />Super Lunch Special<lb /><lb />AOE AGRE T Tes TIME eS  <lb /><lb />1 Meat<lb />2 Vegetables $400 A<lb />Beverage &amp; Dessert F<lb />=<lb />Sunday Spectacular<lb />Turkey &amp; })ressing<lb />Roast Beet orimp<lb />Chicken Fish ¢ 95<lb />8 Vegetables<lb />| | Salad Bar + Tax<lb />Assorted Desserts<lb />Call Us For Your Catering Needs<lb />Locally Owned &amp; Operated<lb />Take Outs Welcome<lb /><lb />RIVERSIDE<lb /><lb />STEAK<lb />BAR<lb /><lb />315 Stantonsburg Road, Greenville, NC 752-5001<lb />Banquet Facilities Available : All ABC Permits<lb /><lb />5  ~<lb />D<lb />YY<lb />-<lb /> "  " =<lb /><lb />Chien soe word of the continu-<lb />ing progress of school choice. Three<lb />American cities have released<lb />plans for new or expanded pro-<lb />gramsof parental choice of shcools.<lb />And not surprisingly, the driving<lb />force in each case has been a black<lb />person. In two of the three, a<lb />female black person. And thereby<lb />hangs a tale.<lb /><lb />But first, the essentials.<lb /><lb />The Wisconsin legislature has<lb />boted to expand Milwaukee Ts<lb />school-choice program, now in its<lb />fifth year, to include religious<lb />schools and toincrease enrollment<lb />from about 1.00 to 15,000 students<lb />next year. The Milwaukee experi-<lb />ment is the product of a rare dis-<lb />play of courage and determination<lb />by Polly Williams, a mother of four<lb />who refused to accept for her<lb />younger children more of the edu-<lb />cational neglect her older children<lb />had experienced in that city Ts<lb />schools.<lb /><lb />She enrolled her children in pri-<lb />vate schools, paid from her wages<lb />as a single working mother. Then<lb />she ran for the Wisconsin legisla-<lb />ture, was elected on aschool-choice<lb />platform and joined forces with<lb />Gov. Tommy Thompson to push<lb />through the nation Ts first signifi-<lb />cant school-choice program.<lb /><lb />An issue that crosses<lb />traditional political lines<lb /><lb />The political dynamics make<lb /><lb />Attend college<lb />free!!<lb /><lb />Most parents and students think<lb />that scholarships are only for the<lb />students with good grades, low-<lb />income families, or the athletically<lb />inclined. A small example of the<lb />numerous scholarships available<lb />to students include: Handicapped<lb />Student Scholarships, Members of<lb />a Church Scholarships, Scholar-<lb />ships for  oC ? Students, Veteran<lb />Children Ts Scholarships, Scholar-<lb />ships for Minorities and much,<lb />much more.<lb /><lb />The general public is not aware<lb />that over $10 billion is available to<lb />students from private sector schol-<lb />arships. Over $20.4 billion is avail-<lb />able fromthe Federal Government.<lb />In a U.S. Congressional study, it<lb />was reported that  oOver $6.6. bil-<lb />lion of private sector financial aid<lb />went unused because the parents<lb />and students did not know where<lb />to apply. ? A conservative college<lb />tuition for a full-time student runs<lb />from $10,000-$30,000; high cost<lb />colleges can run from $40,000-<lb />$100,000!<lb /><lb />There are organizations that<lb />have spent hundreds of hours in<lb />research locating scholarship<lb />sources. The U.S. Commission for<lb />Scholastic Assistance - College<lb />Boundis such an organization and<lb />supplies the public with over 600<lb />different scholarships sources. The<lb />lists include the scholarship<lb />names, addresses, application<lb />deadlines, summaries about the<lb />scholarships and the amount the<lb />scholarship will pay your child.<lb /><lb />Many scholarships pay the en-<lb />tire tuition; otherwise, students<lb />combine applicable scholarships<lb />together to form one large tuition<lb />payment.<lb /><lb />Most scholarships include jun-<lb />ior colleges, career and vocational<lb />schools, 4 year colleges, graduate<lb />schools, medical and law schools.<lb /><lb />For information on obtaining<lb />these scholarship lists, send a<lb />selfaddressed stamped #10 enve-<lb />lope to: The U.S Commission for<lb />Scholastic Assistance, College<lb />Bound, P.O. Thomp-<lb />son is a two-term Republican gov-<lb />ernor, a leading GOP conservative<lb />and a staunch advocate of school<lb />reform. The bond between the. two<lb />was forged by a common concern<lb />for the welfare of the children of<lb />Milwaukee Ts poor families, who<lb />were consigned to the city Ts public<lb />schools iwth no means of escape.<lb />No, that Ts not so. They could es-<lb />cape: Their families could move to<lb />another school district or the chil-<lb />dren couldenroll in private schools.<lb />And nothing stood in the way of<lb />either except money.<lb />Representative Williams and<lb />Governor Thompson noticed that<lb />few of Milwaukee Ts black citizens<lb />were affluent, so they set out to<lb />find another way. George Voinovich to rescue<lb />2,100 of the city Ts poor children.<lb />They may now attend the schools<lb />of their choice, whether private,<lb />public or parochial. The scholar-<lb />ship award for each child is $2,500.<lb />The story in Washington is per-<lb /><lb />haps the most tee wad the<lb />most promising for the growth of<lb />the school-choice movement. The<lb />plan put forward by the District of<lb />Columbia Ts leadership and en-<lb />dorsed by Superintendent of<lb />Schools Franklin Smithis designed<lb />to rescue low-income children in<lb />failing schools. It has been en-<lb />dorsed by Mayor Marion Barry<lb />and in this I kid you not, by the<lb />Washington Post, which, until this<lb />historic moment, has been a re-<lb />lentless foe of school choice in any<lb />form.<lb />Black leadership is not<lb />surprising<lb /><lb />Nathan Glazer, a highly re-<lb />spected education analyst, cap-<lb />tures the essential truth about the<lb />quality of schools we provide for<lb />the black children in our large<lb />cities.  oConstitutional law often<lb /><lb /> ~moves along strange and circui-<lb /><lb />tous paths, ? Although the<lb />children on that day should not go<lb />to school, the parents should be<lb />the teachers teaching our children<lb />the value of a proper education; an<lb />education that teaches you to love<lb />yourself; education is that which<lb />gives you a desire to bring forth<lb />from yourself the God given gifts<lb />and talents to put them in the<lb />service of self and others. On that<lb />day, the parents should focus on<lb />the value of education and begin to<lb />move more strongly to take con-<lb />trol of the education in our own<lb />communities to make sure that it<lb />is an education that does not make<lb />another slave, but an education<lb />that qualifies us to be self-inde-<lb />pendent, self-determined and self-<lb />reliant.<lb /><lb />On that day, I will be asking<lb />every entertainer not to entertain.<lb />I will be asking every sports fig-<lb />ure, professional or otherwise, not<lb />to play America must be made to<lb />see that the Black people in her<lb />midst have added something of<lb />significance to this country. On<lb />that day, your basketball, football,<lb />baseball and entertainment will<lb />be all white. Since so many of you<lb />love to be all white, then be all<lb />white, it Ts all right. America must<lb />taste how it feels when her ex-<lb />slave is not in her midst.<lb /><lb />MAKE AMERICA TO<lb />KNOW HER SINS<lb /><lb />We want America to reflect on<lb />her sins against the Black man.<lb /><lb />The Honorable T Elijah<lb />Muhammad said,  oMake America<lb />to know her sins. ? So, we want<lb />America to see that she owes some-<lb />thing to the people who built her<lb />country and as yet have not re-<lb /><lb />we didn Tt te you into slavery.<lb />While it is true that the present<lb />generation of whites did not ini-<lb />tiate slavery and the wretched con-<lb />dition of Black people which re-<lb />sulted from it, nevertheless, the<lb />present generation of whites are<lb />the beneficiaries of that which was<lb />done by their fathers to our fa-<lb />thers who made us to work to pro-<lb />duce wealth for the nation that the<lb />present generation is feeding from.<lb />Even though the present genera-<lb />tion is not responsible for slavery<lb />and its evil, the present genera-<lb />tion of Caucasians, however, must<lb />accept the responsibility and the<lb />challenge to be participantsin find-<lb />ing the solution that will correct<lb />the wrong that was done that has<lb />never been properly addressed.<lb /><lb />If the present generation of Cau-<lb />casians refuses to accept this chal-<lb />lenge then they will, in effect, be<lb />saying that they agree with the<lb />evil of their fathers and thus be<lb />face to face with The Judgment of<lb />Allah (God) that is written in the<lb />scriptures,  oAnd I will visit the<lb />sins of the fathers on their chil-<lb />dren even to the 3rd and 4th gen-<lb />eration of them that hate me [This<lb />hatred of God is manifested by a<lb />hatred for the principle of justice<lb />for the children of the slaves]. ?<lb /><lb />It will be our duty to present our<lb />case in the wisest and most intel-<lb />ligent way. In so doing, we must<lb />also make the Black man to know<lb />his sins. We cannot, in this mod-<lb />ern time, keep on blaming white<lb />people for our shortcomings. We<lb />have to know our own sins in this<lb />matter and repent of the evils that<lb />are destroying our own communi-<lb />ties. We must repent of the lazi-<lb />ness that has caused us not to be<lb />willing to take up our responsibil-<lb />ity to do for self; and, if we will<lb />repent and. if we can call America<lb />to repentance for her own evils,<lb />then we can work out a way to<lb />resolve the problem between the<lb />two people with justice.<lb /><lb />TO OUR WOMEN AND<lb />GIRLS<lb /><lb />You have always been by our<lb />side. In fact, you have been in front<lb />leading us. Were it not for your<lb />boldness. your courage, intelli-<lb />gence, and forthrightness, we as<lb />Black men would have very little.<lb />We are asking our wives and<lb />daughters to stay at home on that<lb />day; not because we don Tt need<lb />you; not because we don Tt think<lb />that you can be of great support to<lb />us. You, my dear sisters, have been<lb />our leaders, our teachers, our<lb />nurses. You have been so patient<lb />waiting for us to take up our re-<lb />sponsibility; so now that we have<lb />made up our minds to stand up for<lb />you and our families, we want you<lb />to aid us in this march by staying<lb />at home with the children teach-<lb />ing them in sympathy with wKat<lb />your Black men have finally de-<lb />cided to do.<lb /><lb />You should not go to the store on<lb />that day to buy anything. What-<lb />ever we buy, buy it ahead of this<lb />day. We should not go to the office.<lb />We should not let this world see<lb />us. We should be in our homes<lb />focused on prayer and thanksgiv-<lb />ing, praying that Allah (God) will<lb />pour out His Spirit and Protection<lb />on those who actually march on<lb />the streets of Washington, D.C.,<lb />and those who march with us in<lb />spiritin their homes. We want this<lb />march to be the real shot heard<lb />around the world that the Black<lb />man, the Black woman, and the<lb />Black family are standing together<lb />at last.<lb /><lb />This must be a day of prayer, Let<lb />all of Us turn to Almighty (God)<lb />Allah and pray to Him with our<lb />children by our sides "young and<lb />old. This should be a day of fasting<lb />for those who are able to fast from<lb />sunup to sundown. This should be<lb />a day when we bow down to the<lb />Lord of Creation, to the God of our<lb />salvation in remembrance of our<lb />ancestors and what they suffered<lb />to bring us to this great day Ifall of<lb />us will unite this one day, then the<lb />world will take notice that there is<lb />a new Black man in America. We<lb /><lb />must organize be<lb />rege age es aoe<lb />Roa: a Penn cat 6<lb />Seo be ness ela<lb />wasted cities.<lb /><lb />WHAT ARE THE<lb />POLITICAL, SOCIAL,<lb />SPIRITUAL AND<lb />ECONOMIC<lb /> ~ADVANTAGES OF THIS<lb />HISTORIC MARCH?<lb /><lb />Politicians are moved by num-<lb />bers. Politicians know that num-<lb />bers can determine elections. 1996<lb />will produce the most fateful of<lb />Presidential elections. No candi-<lb />date of either party has ever ad-<lb />dressed Black people on an agenda<lb />that we ourselves have fashioned<lb />and put before them for their con-<lb />sideration. By the Grace of Allah<lb />(God) we will present a Black<lb />agenda for the candidate of either<lb />party to address forthrightly. Since<lb />both parties, Democrat and Re-<lb />publican, have never addressed<lb />the real needs of the Black people<lb />of America. I will therefore ask all<lb />Black men to register or preregis-<lb />ter as independents, holding our<lb />vote to be given to whomsoever<lb />will address the Black agenda with<lb />truth and with justice. There will<lb />be great political advantage in a<lb />million Black men representing<lb />several million more behind the<lb />door. Let us use this political le-<lb />verage to help our people get up<lb />and to help America to see that we<lb />intend to use our political power in<lb />a constructive way and that no<lb />longer can any party depend on<lb />our vote or take ii for granted.<lb /><lb />WHAT IS THE SOCIAL<lb />ADVANTAGE?<lb /><lb />Black men from every religious<lb />affiliation, every civic, fraternal or<lb />political persuasion, from the revo-<lb />lutionist to the integrationist, from<lb />the Christians, to the Muslims,<lb />Hebrews and Agnostics "all of us<lb />will be together. There will be a<lb />common denominator uniting the<lb />fractions and the factions. On that<lb />one day we will see the value so-<lb />cially of never allowing artificial<lb />barriers to impede the advance-<lb />ment of our people.<lb /><lb />Whatis the spiritual advantage?<lb />The spiritual advantage is that<lb />the greatest force of Allah (God) is<lb />not only Truth, but His Spint<lb />which engenders and promotes the<lb />love of the brotherhood.<lb /><lb />One wniter says in the scripture<lb />that,  oWe can tell that we have<lb />passed from death into life be-<lb />cause we love the brotherhood. ?<lb />The spiritual advantage is that we<lb />will find common cause to love<lb />ourselves and to love one another.<lb />And out of that love, life will in-<lb />crease in our families, in the Black<lb />nation in America and in Black<lb />people all over the world who will<lb />be touched by what we say and do.<lb /><lb />Whatis the economic advantage?<lb />We will begin to see as never be-<lb />fore the value of pooling our re-<lb />sources to buy farmland, to set up<lb />factories, to enter into interna-<lb />tional trade and commerce, to pe-<lb />tition the government that they<lb />should not cede manufacturing to<lb />Third World countries but the<lb />Black community, or the inner cit-<lb />ies which are in a Third World<lb />condition. Therefore, manufactur-<lb />ing must be ceded to us. We will<lb />make the shoes and cobble our<lb />feet. We will make the suits and<lb />dresses to clothe our backs. We<lb />will make the underwear. shirts,<lb />socks and other necessities that<lb />are now being imported from<lb />China, Japan, Korea, and Italy.<lb />We will take the responsibility of<lb />food, clothing, and shelter for our<lb />people, with a partnership with<lb />government, a partnership for<lb />mutual progress. This army will<lb />be the true army of salvation of the<lb />Black nation and the army of sal-<lb />vation of America and the salva-<lb />tion army of the world.<lb /><lb />Will you be there? Let us pray<lb />that Allah (God) will increase the<lb />spirit in Black men that we will<lb />make up our minds to present our<lb />bodies on that day as a reasonable<lb />and living sacrifice to accomplish<lb />what we have determined to ac-<lb />complish by the helpof Allah (God).<lb /><lb />4<lb />Ant<lb /><lb />AAAS<lb /><lb />If so, we want to talk to you about participating in<lb />our project to learn how African-American men manage<lb />side-effects from prostate cancer treatment.<lb /><lb />The aim of this project is to study and i improve the health care<lb />received by African-American men wit<lb /><lb />We need your help!<lb /><lb />To learn more about this project and how<lb />it can benefit you, call 1-800-349-5858.<lb /><lb />MANAGING UNCERTAINTY IN CANCER<lb />SCHOOL OF Nursinc, UNC-CHAPEL HILL<lb /><lb />Funded by the National Cancer Insticute and National Institute for Nursing Research,<lb /><lb />prostate cancer.<lb /><lb /></p>

The Black male is<lb />so destroyed, that Allah (God) him-<lb />self has to do today what He did in<lb />the beginning, and that is to de-<lb />clare His involvement in the pro-<lb />cess of the remaking of man.<lb /><lb />We, as students and followers of<lb />the Honorable Elijah Muhammad,<lb />are callingon all able-bodied Black<lb />mento set aside a day, October<lb /><lb />-16,1995, for an historic March on<lb /><lb />Washington to declare to the Gov-<lb />ernment of America and the world,<lb />that we are ready to take our place<lb />as the head of our families and our<lb />communities and that we, as Black<lb />men, are ready to shoulder the<lb />responsibility of being the<lb />maintainers of our women and<lb />children and the builders of our<lb />communities.<lb /><lb />There is enough unused and<lb />undeveloped talent in the Black<lb />male to build an entirely New<lb />World. The Almighty Allah (God)<lb />has declared that the time is ripe;<lb />and, that we must get up from our<lb />assigned place at the foot of the<lb />rulers of this world and show forth<lb />the Wisdom and Power of Allah<lb />(God) in doing something for our-<lb />selves.<lb /><lb />WHY A MARCH ON<lb /><lb />WASHINGTON?<lb /><lb />In 1963 the leaders of the civil<lb />rights movement gathered Black<lb />people together to march on Wash-<lb />ington for jobs and justice. The<lb />government became so frightened<lb />by this that they decided to dilute<lb />ihe strength of the march and<lb />weaken the resolve of the march-<lb />ers. However, the march went for-<lb />ward as planned and out of it later<lb />emerged the passing of the voting<lb />rights and public accommodations<lb />bills of 1965 and 1966. From that<lb /><lb />point there has been a steady move-<lb />ment of talented Black people in<lb />corporate America, politics, and<lb />business. However, the masses of<lb />Black people, and Black men in<lb />particular, are lagging far, far be-<lb />hind.<lb /><lb />I was visiting with the Honor-<lb />able Elijah Muhammad as we<lb />watched the 1963 March on Wash-<lb />ington. He said that he saw too<lb />much frivolity, joking and a picnic<lb />atmosphere. He said,  oOne day,<lb />Brother, I will call for a March on<lb />Washington. ? However, this march<lb />and the marchers will be serious<lb />about our quest for justice. Itis the<lb />thinking of the Honorable Elijah<lb />Muhammad that has inspired this<lb />call, in particular to Black men,<lb />that we must now show the world<lb />our resolve; for itis we, Black men,<lb />who cleared the underbrush, laid<lb />the tracks for the railroad, built<lb />the homes in the south for the<lb />slave masters. Itis we who plowed<lb />their fields, helped build their<lb />roads. It is we who fought in all of<lb />America Ts wars for a freedom that<lb />we have yet to enjoy.<lb /><lb />So, now the God of Justice has<lb />declared that it is time for us as<lb />Black men and as Christians,<lb />Muslims, Nationalists, Agnostics,<lb />young and old members of every<lb />fraternal, civic, and political orga-<lb />nization to stand together as one<lb />to declare our right to justice and<lb />our right to determine the future<lb />of ourselves and our people.<lb /><lb />THE DRY BONES IN THE<lb />VALLEY:<lb />AN EXCEEDINGLY<lb /><lb />GREAT ARMY<lb />It is written in the Book of<lb />Ezekiel that the dry bones would<lb />hear a word that would stimulate<lb />them, causing them to move, but<lb />there would be no spirit or breath<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 4)<lb /><lb />OTTO:<lb />"The friend of<lb />a fool is a fool.<lb />The friend of a<lb />wise person Is<lb /><lb />another wise<lb />person.'<lb /><lb />The Husia<lb /><lb />Mrs. Beatrice<lb />Maye<lb /><lb />4,<lb /><lb />Page 2<lb /><lb />Community<lb />News<lb />Page 3<lb /><lb />Tips To Help<lb />Sleepy Teens<lb />Page 7<lb /><lb />National poll finds majority of<lb />women wouldn Tt object to child<lb />dating someone of another race<lb /><lb />A national  oRace in America ?<lb />survey of 2,000 women, conducted<lb />jointly by ESSENCE and FAM-<lb />ILY CIRCLE and reported simul-<lb />taneously in the October issues of<lb />both magazines, reveals that: *<lb />More than half ofboth blacks (61%)<lb />and whites (54%) would not object<lb />to their child dating someone of<lb />another race. However, 31% of the<lb />women (both black and white)<lb />would object to an interracial mar-<lb />riage. * Black women (41%) con-<lb />sider themselves more biased than<lb />whites (21%) and are twice as likely<lb />to be distrustful of other races than<lb />whites (61% vs. 30%). * White<lb />women were far more likely to<lb />express discomfort with livingina<lb />neighborhood whose residents<lb />were predominantly of another<lb />race than black females (61% vs.<lb />24%). Women of color, however,<lb />would feel more discomfort attend-<lb />ing a party with guests predomi-<lb />nantly of another race (38% vs.<lb />22%). * Black women say they most<lb />often derive their sense of self by<lb />race (31%), with educational<lb />achievements (20%) cited as a dis-<lb />tant second. Racial views from<lb />readers ranged from hopeful to<lb />angry to despairing.
