And more im-<lb />portantly, oWhatcan be done about<lb />it? ?<lb /><lb />Creating Racism: Psychiatric Ts<lb />Betrayal In The Guise of Help isa<lb /> ono-holds-barred ? look at a hidden<lb />influence and cause of declining<lb />morals, educational standards and<lb />tolerance in our community. Pub-<lb />lished by the Citizens Commis-<lb />sion on Human Rights (CCHR), an<lb />internationally renowned psychi-<lb /><lb />atric owatchdog ? group, it warns of<lb />how education and the family, the<lb />foundations of our society, have<lb />been subverted under the guise of<lb /> ohelp. ?<lb /><lb /> oIf anyone wonders why drugs<lb />and guns suddenly appeared in<lb />the African American community<lb />in the 1960s and stayed, if you<lb />wonder why children and teenag-<lb />ers have turned to gang violence<lb />and drugs, give little value to life,<lb />cannot find jobs or have a sense of<lb />hopelessness about their future,<lb />then this book offers an insight<lb />into how this was achieved, ? Inter-<lb />national President of CCHR, Ms.<lb />Jan Eastgate said.<lb /><lb />For decades psychiatrists and<lb />psychologists have preached the<lb />inferiority dogma, that minority<lb />individuals have oLow1Q ? and that<lb />this regulates behavior and sta-<lb />tus. In the 1800s, aslave Ts attempt<lb />to escape to freedom was labeled a<lb />mental illness called<lb /><lb /> ~drapetomania T (runaway mania).<lb />Today, the various reactions by<lb />African Americans to oppression<lb />are diagnosed as psychiatric prob-<lb />lems. In the 1920s, racial hygiene<lb /> oexperts ? called eugenicists (from<lb />eugenes meaning ogood in stock ?)<lb />claimed that blacks with white<lb />blood had ohigher IQs o In the<lb />1950s, psychologists wrote thatIQ<lb />test scores oinevitably point to the<lb />presence of native differences be-<lb />tween Negroes and whites. In the<lb />1994 psycho-babble book . The Bell<lb />Curve, this fraud was further per-<lb />petuated.<lb /><lb />In this way, the systematic so-<lb />cial crippling of certain races has<lb />been carried out, if not by violent<lb />psychiatric treatments, then by<lb />denying them proper education,<lb />employment and other cultural<lb />advantages.<lb /><lb />As Ms. Eastgate stated, oOnce it<lb />was politically acceptable for psy-<lb />chiatrists to invent the so-called<lb /><lb />CAROL CALDWELL SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET. +e Shown at the unas Center for<lb />their annual banquet executive committee and special guest speaker, state of NC Auditor, Mr.<lb />Ralph Campbell and his lovely wife. Simpson case,<lb />which began in the fashionalbe<lb />Westwood Brentwood-neighbor-<lb />hood of the city, the cancer ap-<lb />pears to have spread.<lb /><lb />As each day passes and new<lb /> oblockbuster ? events pale the<lb /> oblockbusters ? from previous days,<lb />Mr. Simpson Ts case has begun to<lb /> " the case 13 years ago of<lb /><lb />mumia Abu-Jamal. Police Department's<lb />and the District Attorney's roles<lb />in prosecuting the Hall of Fame<lb />football hero accused of murder-<lb />ing his White former wife and a<lb />White male acquaintance of hers,<lb />as a orush to judgment. ? |<lb />Now, in the face of their own<lb />weak strategy and stunning evi-<lb /><lb />dence unearthed by the defense,<lb /><lb />the prosecutors have challenged<lb />Judge Lance Ito to step down from<lb />the case completely. Prosecutors<lb />may be hoping fora mistrial, which<lb />would give them an opportunity to<lb />retry the case, without repeating<lb />the blunders and errors they com-<lb />mitted, and with full knowledge of<lb />the defense strategy. Furthermore,<lb />Mr. Simpson will not have the<lb />money to pressa full-court-defense<lb />strategy in a re-trial, the way his<lb />team has done in this 11-month-<lb />saga.<lb /><lb />The irony is: the evidence that<lb />prosecution ostar witness ? - Los<lb /><lb />Angeles Police Detective Mark {<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />Fuhrman -isa race-hater who lied<lb />on the witness stand in this case,<lb />and who apparently admits that<lb />he routinely advises cops to plant<lb />evidence and frame innocent sus-<lb />pects in 30-hours of taped inter-<lb />views given more than seven years<lb />ago; is surprisingly similar to the<lb />evidence now being revealed about<lb />the Philadephia Police Depart-<lb />ment and the prosecution of Mr.<lb />Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of<lb />murdering a White cop on Decem-<lb />ber 9, 1981.<lb /><lb />From Watts to Westwood: From<lb /><lb />AJ. to OW.<lb /> oContinued on page 2)<lb /><lb />Quote: }<lb /><lb />America has<lb />OXY TKR KX<lb />Shame and its<lb />sense of outrage,<lb />regarding<lb />violence, drugs<lb />and poor<lb />education"<lb />General Colin Powell<lb /><lb />ment funds is the innocent-sound-<lb />ing Goals 2000, Outcome-Based<lb />Education, Mastery Learning and<lb /> ~Values clarification T that are<lb />passed off today as needed for bet-<lb />ter education. oThe legislations<lb />that empower these programs<lb />merely further the same philoso-<lb />phies that have mentally enslaved<lb />school children for 32 years. Like<lb />the other conference participants,<lb />I ama longtime opponent of capi-<lb />tal punishment. Not only is it im-<lb />moral and inhumane, it is an inef-<lb />fective deterrent to violent crime.<lb />Even many of those who advocate<lb />it concede that. We need to take a<lb />hard look at what has happened in<lb />this country with respect to the<lb />death penalty.<lb /><lb />AsI pointed out in my talk at the<lb />anti-death penalty conference, the<lb />death penalty has become an em-<lb />blem of political authority in<lb />America. It is the ultimate state-<lb />ment by government "Big Gov-<lb />ernment "that it can control our<lb />lives. Big Government has so much<lb />power that it can do anything to<lb /><lb />you, and take anything from you "<lb />including your life.<lb /><lb />This intrusive, arrogant, abu-<lb />sive and violent Big Government<lb />hasincreasingly placed itselfabove<lb />the wishes of the American people,<lb />not to mention above the Consti-<lb />tution and the Bill of Rights. In-<lb />deed, I would argue, as have many<lb />others, that the death penalty is<lb />unconstitutional "it violates the<lb />Eighth Amendment, which pro-<lb />hibits cruel and unusual punish-<lb />ment. The imposition of the death<lb />penalty is just one of the many<lb />ways that the government is cur-<lb />rently abrogating the Billof Rights<lb />and placing American democracy<lb />at risk.<lb /><lb />Despite this, the death penalty<lb />has popular support "no doubt,<lb />because the American people feel<lb />powerless in the face of risingcrime<lb />and violence. What is most signifi-<lb />cant, however, is that the death<lb />penalty has been osold ? to them as<lb />a solution by a remarkable coali-<lb /><lb />tion of law and omer extremists<lb />and protagonists of liberal Big<lb />Government like President<lb />Clinton.<lb /><lb />Unusual coalitions "like the one<lb />backing the death penalty "are<lb />the new phenomenon in American<lb />political life. Just take a look at<lb />the recently completed Congres-<lb />sional hearings on government and<lb />law enforcement abuses in the<lb />handling of the Branch Davidian<lb />situation in Waco, Texas. The Rich-<lb />mond Dispatch insightfully<lb />pointed out last week that while<lb />David Koresh might not have been<lb />the messiah, he most certainly was<lb />a miracle worker. He turned law<lb />and order Republicans into civil<lb />libertarians and liberal Democrats<lb />into ardent spokespersons for what<lb />is perhaps the most outrageous<lb />government abuse of the Bill of<lb />Rights in the last decade. The<lb />Davidians, after all, were sum-<lb />marily executed. He added that<lb />the book is currently being sold in<lb />some of the large commercial book-<lb />stores as well as the Black-owned<lb />stores, such as Karibu Books. The<lb />book is also on sale in bookstores<lb />in at least nine cities around the<lb />country. "<lb /><lb />Brother Yao, an owner of Karibu<lb />Books, said he invited the authors<lb />to sign copies of their books at his<lb />store because the books are in great<lb />demand. oI Tve read the book, and<lb />it Ts helped me to find useful infor-<lb />mation on the Internet, whichis so<lb />vast that it Ts difficult to find mate-<lb />rial that is interesting and rel-<lb />evant, ? The unrecon-<lb />structed liberal notion of endless<lb />racial reparations and race-based<lb />preferences i is doubly guilty: wrong<lb />in principle and ruinous in prac-<lb />tice. Presidnet Clinton Ts much<lb />vaunted affirmative action review<lb />produced more ofa bumber sticker<lb />than a policy; Clinton Ts focus group-<lb />fashioned omend it, not end it ?<lb />slogan makes a far better rhyme<lb />than reason.<lb /><lb />The same, however, is true of<lb />the new affirmative action oaboli-<lb />tionist ? position, which heralds<lb />equality but seldom addressed the<lb />way to truly give all people an<lb />equal footing. Critics are right in<lb /><lb /> T asserting that oaffirmative action ?<lb /><lb />quotas have contributed to the<lb />poisoning of race relations in this<lb />country. But critics must offer<lb />much more than just opposition<lb />and reproach. We know what they<lb />are against, but what are they for?<lb /><lb /> oA coloredblind society, ? comes<lb />their response. Of course, the goal<lb />of equal opportunity is paramount<lb />and a worthy destiny to seek. But<lb />to say that we have arrived at that<lb />goal is simply not true. My friends<lb />on the right call for a colorblind<lb />society and then quote Martin<lb />Luther King Ts inspirational oI<lb />Have a Dream ? speech, in which<lb />he imagined a nation in which<lb />every American would be judged<lb />not on the color of his or her skin<lb />but on the ocontent of his charac-<lb />ter. ?<lb /><lb />All too often, though, they ne-<lb />glect to quote theend of his speech,<lb />where he describes the painful<lb />plight of minority America: oThe<lb />Negro, ? King said, olives on a lonly<lb />island of poverty in the midst of a<lb />vast ocean of material prosperity. ?<lb />And much has changed in the 30<lb />years since King stood on the steps<lb />of the Lincoln Memorial.<lb /><lb />- Affirmative Action<lb /><lb />Minority ~enterprises have be-<lb />gun to gain a foothold, although<lb />there are far too few of them. But<lb />can anyone venture to the crum-<lb />bling brick and mortar of Cabrini<lb />Green Public Housing, or the fear-<lb />ridden projects of Bed-Stuy or the<lb />streets lined witht he unemployed<lb />in South Central LA or East St.<lb />Louis and believe that what he<lb />sees there today would pass as<lb />progress since Dr. King Ts day?<lb /><lb />This is not to negate the gains<lb />made by so many in the Black and<lb />minority communities. But for<lb />large numbers, the situation has<lb />not only not improved in 30 years,<lb />it has grown dramatically worse,<lb />with a welfare system that en-<lb />traps rather than empowers, pun-<lb />ishes work and marriage and pre-<lb />vents access to capital, credit and<lb />property. Reality requires that we<lb />admit two things- difficult admis-<lb />sions for both liberals and conser-<lb />vatives.<lb /><lb />First, that race-conscious policy<lb />of quotas and rigid preferences<lb />has helped make matters worse.<lb />Second, and more important, the<lb />Good Shepherd reminds all of us<lb />that our work is not done, and we<lb />think about moving into the 21st<lb />century, we must not leave anyone<lb />behind. Sound policy begins with T<lb />strong principles.<lb /><lb />Affirmative action based on quo-<lb />tas is wrong "wrong because it is<lb />antithetical to the genious of the<lb />American idea: individual liberty.<lb />(County) by race in order to rem-<lb />edy past wrongs or rewarding spe-<lb />cial groups by taking from others<lb />perpetuates and even deepens the<lb />divisions between us. But race-<lb />based politics is even more wrong<lb />and must be repudiated by men<lb />and women of civility and compas-<lb />sion. ,<lb /><lb />Affirming affirmative action be-<lb />gins with education.<lb /><lb />AT&amp;T to offer cellular,<lb />paging services to<lb /><lb />customers<lb /><lb />AT&amp;T has announced it will be-<lb />gin using all its long-distance sales<lb />channels to offer cellular and pag-<lb />ing services to its 90 million con-<lb />sumers and business customers,<lb />bringing them the benefits of wire-<lb />less communications less than a<lb />year after the acquisition of McCaw<lb />Cellular Communications Inc.<lb /><lb />The jointly-developed cellular<lb />and paging services announces are<lb />only the first which AT&amp;T and its<lb />wholly-owned subsidiary plan to<lb />offer. <lb />~ that the FBI, the Cenisinuk a of<lb /><lb />Justice and Attorney General<lb />Janet Renoimposed the death pen-<lb />alty there without even the pre-<lb />tense of a trial.<lb /><lb />What does all of this have to do<lb />with taking a hard look at where<lb />the anti-death penalty movement<lb />stands? Big Government and the<lb />far right have won the hearts and<lb />minds of the American people on<lb />this critical issue because the<lb />American liberal-left "those who<lb />believe most passionately in the<lb />abolition of the death penalty "<lb />has been unwilling to identify Big<lb />Government as a threat to civil<lb />liberties. Moreover, it has been<lb />unwilling to build a connection to<lb />the anti-Big Government move-<lb />ment at the political center thereby<lb />opening the door to the popular-<lb />ization of rightist non-solutions to<lb />a profound social crisis.<lb /><lb />How could this have happened?<lb />For one thing, much of the liberal-<lb />left seemed to believe that liberal-<lb /><lb />always dominate the key institu-<lb />tions of American political life. The<lb />election in 1992 of Bill Clinton "<lb />who was pro-death penalty "was<lb />nonetheless<lb /><lb />identified as a swing back to<lb />liberalism after the Reagan-Bush<lb />era. Actually, it was a protest<lb />against the existing governmen-<lb />tal state of affairs. The Perot move-<lb />ment was written off as something<lb />between a fluke and the rise of<lb />neo-fascism. Thus, the liberal-left<lb />failed to see the signs that tradi-<lb />tional American political align-<lb />ments were shifting and that the<lb />American people were more and<lb />more turning away from the bi-<lb />partisan establishment and to-<lb />ward an anti-Big Government<lb />populism. Ironically, it is Middle<lb />America, which has been so sus-<lb />ceptible to arguments favoring the<lb />death penalty, that is now more<lb />and more opposed to the intrusive,<lb />abusive and violent Big Govern-<lb /><lb />ment welfare state. Meanwhile,<lb />the anti-death penalty movement,<lb />increasingly isolated from the<lb />American people, is turning to Bill<lb />Clinton and the pro-death pen-<lb />alty, anti-civil libertarian welfare<lb />state to represent its cause.<lb />Welfare and the welfare state "<lb />Big Government "have always<lb />been identified as the saviors of<lb />the African American commu-<lb />nity "the sole institutional frame-<lb />work that protects us from de-<lb />struction. Moffitt<lb /><lb />Dear Editor: °<lb /><lb />First, let me preface this letter<lb />by stating that I am by no means<lb />negating the risks that police of-<lb />ficers face daily. However, I have<lb />several questions. My family andI<lb />have not taken an oath to serve<lb />and protect the citizens of<lb />Greenville. We did not agree to<lb />risk life and/or limb to deter crime.<lb />We were placed in an untenable<lb /><lb />| situation which, had the outcome<lb /><lb />been tragic for my family, expla-<lb />nations wouldn Tt have sufficed.<lb /><lb />On July 26th around 2:20 p.m.<lb />the sanctity of our home was vio-<lb />lated. Itis my understanding that<lb />a suspect was sighted in Line<lb />Street, several blocks from my<lb />home. The suspect was chased by<lb />the police through two neighbors T<lb />houses with children present be-<lb />fore he was shot in the yard next to<lb />my house.<lb /><lb />At what point did the suspect<lb />shoot at the police and he returned<lb />fire? What would have been the<lb />rationale given for wounding or<lb />killing one of my children had the<lb />bullet that is in my wall had come<lb />through? How do I explain to my<lb />children that we have a right to be<lb />safe in our home after such a thing<lb />as this?<lb /><lb />Officer Robert A. Williams stated<lb />he prays to return home safely to<lb />his family and wears bullet proof<lb />armor so he can do so. We were<lb />home that day thinking we were<lb />safe. We are nota part of the crimi-<lb />nal drug element. I am raising my<lb />children to be Godfearing, produc-<lb />tive persons. But according to Po-<lb />lice ChiefHinman, his officers T lives<lb />are of great value. Are ours value-<lb />less when it comes to suspect ap-<lb />prehension?<lb /><lb />As a mother of five, Ican not get<lb />out of my mind that the bullet<lb />lodged in my hallway is the same<lb />level as the height of my only<lb />daughter. She wasin the hall when<lb />the shooting commenced. Had the<lb />bullet not been stopped by the stud,<lb />she would have been struck in her<lb />head.<lb /><lb />Ileave you with a final question.<lb />What bullet proff armor is she<lb />supposed to have in her home?<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb />Sharon H. King<lb /><lb />To the Editor:<lb /><lb />The fiftieth anniversaries of the<lb />atomic bombings have prompted<lb />debates about the ethics of war-<lb />fare. Meanwhile, America Ts war<lb />on prenatal children has raged on<lb />unabated, routinely trashing ev-<lb />ery thical principle. It has con-<lb />sisted exclusively of literally sur-<lb />gical first strikes against the to-<lb />tally innocent and helpless, in-<lb />tended to preempt the recognition<lb />and protections normally accorded<lb />at birth. Rather than honor the<lb />immunity of non-combatants, it<lb />has deliberately targeted them. It<lb />has employed poisonour weapons,<lb /><lb />refusal of quarter and live dis-<lb />memberment of the unarmed tar-<lb />get population, even subjecting<lb />them to experimentation, in con-<lb />travention of the laws of war and<lb />all international standards for the<lb />treatment of prisoners, It has vio-<lb />lated oJust War ? principles, in-<lb />cludingjust cause, last resort, pro-<lb />portionality andcompetent author-<lb />ity by placing the decision for a<lb />death-dealing act, grotesquely dis-<lb />proportionate to the ends usually<lb />sought, in the hands of the fre-<lb />quently ill-informed, distraught<lb />and underage. It Ts rationalization<lb />on the basis of so-called hard cases<lb />has reduced the vast majority of<lb />those slaughtered to collateral<lb />damage at rates that would be<lb />morally horrendous if practiced by<lb />the military.<lb /><lb />What is is about unborn babies<lb />that suspends every ethical con-<lb />sideration? Is it the lack of any<lb />non-violent alternative for retain-<lb />ing control that justifies all man-<lb />ner of barbarism? Or isit that once<lb />the mental process of devaluing<lb />the lives of others, born or unborn,<lb />has gone far enough, they cease to<lb />exist in our minds as human be-<lb />ings such that anything can be<lb /><lb />done to them? What have we be- ©<lb /><lb />come that we avert our eyes as<lb />nearly one in every three of our<lb />children is destroyed? Is this im-<lb />balance of power so much to be<lb />feared? Why has the propaganda<lb />campaign been so effective that<lb />many now think and speak in the<lb />euphemisms ( opro-choice, ? oPreg-<lb />nancy termination, ? oreproductive<lb />freedom, ? etc.) and oxymorons<lb />(save abortion, abortion rights) of<lb />the language of denial? How much<lb />more violence to life, truth, lan-<lb />guage, values, law, government,<lb />medicine, ethics and the principles<lb />of human rights can our society<lb />withstand?<lb /><lb />But conscience and anture are -<lb /><lb />not easilty overcome. Like the fly-<lb />ers who delivered the bombs, the<lb />women who have delivered their<lb />unborn babies to the killing cen-<lb />ters have suffered unforeseen fall-<lb />out, experiencing a range of emo-<lb />tional and physical problems from<lb /><lb />guilt and depression to stenlity<lb /><lb />and breat cancer. Yet the war plan-<lb />ners continue to resist providing<lb />even the most basic safeguards-<lb />such as information about human<lb />development, life-affirming alter-<lb />natives and potential hazards-<lb />rightly fearful that piercing their<lb />veil of ignorance will render their<lb />proxies unwilling to continue the<lb /><lb />carnage.<lb />Sincerely,<lb />Alfred Lemmo<lb /><lb />Top Salesperson<lb />Top Commission<lb /><lb />Salesperson needed to sell radio and newspaper ad-<lb /><lb />vertising. We<lb />might be leaders or members of<lb />different organizations or electoral<lb />parties. We might come from dif-<lb />ferent points on the ideological<lb />spectrum. We might have been<lb />activists in the 1992 Perot cam-<lb />paign who went on to build United<lb />We Stand and are now becoming<lb />convinced that America needs<lb /><lb />a new political party. We might<lb />be activists in the term limits move-<lb />ment who are seeing that without<lb />a third party that elects pro-term<lb />limits independents to Congress,<lb />the Democrats and Republicans<lb />will return to office endlessly and<lb />never reform the political process<lb />in a way that gives the American<lb />people the power that is rightfully<lb />and constitutionally ours. We<lb />might be disaffected African-<lb />Americans who are turning away<lb />from a Big Government which puts<lb />less stock in the Bill of Rights than<lb />in the Bill of Clinton and from a<lb />Democratic Party which pays lip-<lb />service to our issues, while taking<lb />us for granted. But we are all more<lb />and more connected by our desire<lb />to change the conditions in our<lb />communities and in our country.<lb /><lb />You have read the statistics and<lb />the polls. The latest ones show<lb />that 55 percent of all Americans<lb />and 73 percent of Perot supporters<lb />agree that the country needs a<lb />new party that can compete with<lb />the Republicans and Democrats.<lb />Similar polls done among black<lb />voters have shown that 55 percent<lb />of African-Americans favor a new<lb />party. There is no question that<lb />there isa mass market in ourcoun-<lb />try today for a new political party.<lb />The question is who is going to<lb />create it and whois going tolead it.<lb /><lb />The answer, in my opinion, is<lb />you. And I don Tt mean that rhe-<lb />torically or inspirationally or<lb />lightly. I mean it literally. Ross<lb />Perot has so far decided that he<lb />does not want to create a third<lb />party. Apparently so had Rev.<lb />Jesse Jackson, we came to the<lb />Dallas convention and embraced<lb />Ross Perot, but has not embraced<lb />independent politics. I respect<lb />their decision. But I disagree with<lb />it. And hke many Americans "<lb />indeed it now appears lke most<lb />Americans "I believe that we can-<lb />not wait for them to change their<lb />minds.<lb /><lb />There are some independents<lb />who feel that the task of creating a<lb />third party andrunninganational<lb />presidential campaign is not only<lb />possible with a big-name candi-<lb />date who has big money that can<lb />generate big media. <p>am<lb /><lb />; media. adit grows, as it aes<lb />has, from the grassroots. _<lb />There were a lotof private meet-<lb />ings and discussions in Dallas<lb />about whether or not the indepen-<lb />dents could all come together in<lb />1996. A few have said we have too<lb />little in common and too much<lb />that separates us. That very mes-<lb />sage has been force-fed to the<lb />American people. It says ordinary<lb />ricans ofall races and all view-<lb />ts could never come together<lb />to run this country, therefore the<lb />elites are going to have to do it. I<lb /><lb />disagree.<lb /><lb />I think what Ts happening in this<lb />country today is that the Ameri-<lb />can people are wising up. They are<lb />coming together and are saying,<lb /> oHey, Big Government "back off.<lb />Hey, Republicans and Demo-<lb />crats "open up the process or else.<lb />Hey, pollster "we want a third<lb />party! ? The American people are<lb />proving that they. can come to-<lb />gether right before our eyes.<lb /><lb />Wecan have whatever principled<lb />dialogue we need to address differ-<lb />ences in strategy, platform and<lb />organizational design. And while<lb />there may be differences on a vari-<lb /><lb />From Dallas to The White House<lb /><lb />ety of policy issues, it is also the<lb />case that thereis astrongcommon<lb />ground and all Americanscan come<lb />together around issues of political<lb />reform, government accountabil-<lb />ity and fiscal responsibility.<lb /><lb />I believe that the black commu-<lb />nity must play a vital and upfront<lb />role in the creation of this new<lb />political party in America. That<lb /><lb />process is picking up steam. I urge<lb /><lb />you to contact me and become a<lb />part of this independent move-<lb />ment.
