<lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA'S MINORITY VOICE - SINCE 1987<lb /><lb />CAR Ts response to the Gallagher- Westfall findings<lb /><lb />The Coalition Against Racism<lb />has sat patiently by while the<lb />Police Chief, City Manager,<lb />Mayor, and City Council blindly<lb />contended that there are no prob-<lb />lems within the Greenville Police<lb />Department. After receiving sev-<lb />eral complaints from CAR, we are<lb />led to believe that Chief Hinman<lb />suggested to the Council to have<lb />an outside agency, the Gallagher-<lb />Westfall Group Inc., Virginia<lb />based, Liability Management<lb />Team, compare how the Depart-<lb />menthas progressed from the 1991<lb />study.<lb /><lb />This Management Team was<lb />paid by the City, given a selected<lb />list of officers by the City to inter-<lb />view and only viewed what files<lb />the City had on file. In thirty-six<lb />hours, this team was expected to<lb />investigate three years of corrup-<lb />tion. People should know that Pat<lb />Gallagher himself recommended<lb /><lb />Chief Hinman to be hired with the<lb />Greenville Police Department.<lb /><lb />Neither former Lt. Fordham, nor<lb />Detective Cpl. Melvin were allowed<lb />to be interviewed by the group.<lb />How can an unbiased finding be<lb />found if evidence used is only sup-<lb />plied by the Police Department.<lb /><lb />To give you some insight on how<lb /> ounbiased ? this, group was, Cap-<lb />tain C.J. Hardy advised a CAR<lb />member approximately two weeks<lb />after the group had left that the<lb />findings would be in the Police<lb />Department Ts favor.<lb /><lb />How can any agency compare<lb />the Internal Affairs complaints<lb />files within the Greenville Police<lb />Department between black and<lb />white officers, when the complaints<lb />filed on some white officers are not<lb />documented? The Lieutenant<lb />working I.A. was demoted from<lb />Captain for a complaint of Sexual<lb />Harassment and now he is inves-<lb /><lb />THE 1995 oNAACP MOTHER OF THE YEAR ?, Ms. Vivian<lb /><lb />Parker of the St. Mary Baptist Church, is shown here with<lb /><lb />NAACP President, Gaston Monk.<lb /><lb />Staff Photo Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />What is Oklahoma<lb />City Ts Legacy?<lb /><lb />President Clinton, that most<lb />partisan of politicians, has lost no<lb />time in finding a way to use the<lb />Oklahoma City tragedy to his ad-<lb />vantage. By assailingthe country Ts<lb />popular and Populist talk shows<lb />as opurveyors of hatred and divi-<lb />sion, ? he has simultaneously re-<lb />taliated against his most vocifer-<lb />ous critics, and all but accused<lb />them of being the authors of the<lb />worst terrorist act ever committed<lb />on American soil.<lb /><lb />These expressions of American<lb />disaffection and anger at our gov-<lb />ernment " as vociferous as they<lb />might get " are not the source of<lb />the degeneration of civil society.<lb />The blame for that degeneration<lb />must be laid squarely on the shoul-<lb />ders of our President and the bi-<lb />partisan government, whose in-<lb />cendiary disregard for the Ameri-<lb />can people has lit the telephone<lb />lines on every talk show in the<lb />country and the fuse on the bomb<lb />outside the Federal Office Build-<lb />ing in Oklahoma City.<lb /><lb />Mr. Clinton, together with our<lb />Congress (including Mr. Gingrich),<lb />and the intransigent and arro-<lb />gant bipartisan political establish-<lb />ment are blocking the urgent at-<lb />tempts of Americans to reform the<lb />way we do politics in America. In<lb />his speech to the National Press<lb />Club on Tuesday, no less a popu-<lb />list than Ross Perot reinforced the<lb />extent to which the two parties<lb />have failed to respond to this<lb />agenda. He pointed out how popu-<lb />lar sentiment in favor of radical<lb />campaign finance reform, against<lb />the influence of corporate lobby-<lb />ists, against NAFTA and GATT,<lb />and for the Balanced Budget<lb />Amendment, has been manipu-<lb />lated and disregarded by both par-<lb />ties. This kink of flagrant disre-<lb />gard for democratic approaches to<lb />opening up the policy-making pro-<lb />cess creates a climate for fanati-<lb />cism and terrorism. bipartisan<lb />governmental arrogance and aban-<lb />donment are more reckless, and<lb />more dangerous to our democracy<lb />than the oloud and angry voices ?<lb />condemned by Mr. Clinton.<lb /><lb />Notcontent with using the Okla-<lb />homa city tragedy to try to censor<lb />the dialogue of the American<lb />people, President Clinton is also<lb />using these frightening events to<lb />drum up support for his ill-consid-<lb />ered oOmnibus Counterterrorism<lb />Bill ?. And he is not alone, Republi-<lb /><lb />can leadership " including Sena-<lb />tors bob dole and Tom Daschle,<lb />Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Rep.<lb />Henry Hyde, who in chairman of<lb />the House Judiciary committee "<lb />are tripping over each other to line<lb />up in support of the<lb />Administration Ts bill.<lb /><lb />The bill creates a new crime "<lb /> ointernational terrorism ? T "which<lb />actually doesn Tt cover anything<lb />thatisn Tt already acrime. The sole<lb />purpose of this bill appears to be to<lb />allow law enforcement agencies to<lb />avoid certain constitutional pro-<lb />tections that currently apply to<lb />Americans exercising their nght<lb />to speak out and freely associate.<lb />For instance, the bill allows for<lb /> oguilt by association. ? If an Ameri-<lb />can supports the lawful, humani-<lb />tarian activities of an organiza-<lb />tion the President has declared to<lb />be a oterrorist Torganization, that<lb />American can go to jail for up to<lb />ten years. If this bill had been in<lb />effect when the African National<lb />Congress was designated oterror-<lb />ist ?, then an American who con-<lb />tributed to freeing President<lb />Nelson Mandela could end up in<lb />jail. Anillegal and unconstitutional<lb />investigation of me and my inde-<lb />pendent presidential campaign<lb />conducted by the FBI Ts counter<lb />terrorism division in 1988 and<lb />again in 1991 falsely branded me<lb /> oarmed and dangerous, ? a state-<lb />ment the FBI was later forced to<lb />retract. Presumably this bill could<lb />make terrorists out of the more<lb />than 100,000 Americans who have<lb />contributed to my political efforts.<lb /><lb />The bill suspends posse<lb />comitatus "that time-honored<lb />democratic principle which forbids<lb />the military to get into the busi-<lb />ness of civilian law enforcement.<lb />It loosens the rules for wiretaps,<lb />and reverses the presumption of<lb />innocence "accused persons are<lb />considered ineligible for bail.<lb /><lb />The Oklahoma City bombing is<lb />being used in the crudest and most<lb />despicable king of political games-<lb />manship by our President and<lb />other politicians of both,parties.<lb />The men, women and children who<lb />diedin the blast deserve more than<lb />cynical electioneering. Hopefully,<lb />their legacy will be a more fervent<lb />and independent coming together<lb />of all the American people to take<lb />our government and our country<lb />back.<lb /><lb />tigating misconduct of fellow of-<lb />ficers.<lb /><lb />The Gallaghér-Westfall Group<lb />stated prior to presenting their<lb />findings that aconsent form must<lb />be signed by Fordham before they<lb />could release information con-<lb />tained in his personnel file. The<lb />only information that was not re-<lb />leased by the group was that<lb />Fordham was cleared two-to-one<lb />by the Hearing Board to be rein-<lb />stated. The only board member<lb />voted to terminate Fordham was<lb />Battalion Chief Ronald Moore.<lb />Moore was selected by Chief<lb />Hinman; however, Moore agreed<lb />with the Board, that Fordham<lb />was charged with offenses which<lb />were at that time and still is<lb />common practice with the<lb />Greenville Police Department.<lb /><lb />The City Manager, Ron Kimble<lb />and Chief Hinman both have<lb />stated verbally and in writing that<lb />Detective Corporal Melvin was<lb />selected by Fordham to represent<lb />him on the Hearing Board. They<lb />had file tape of Melvin shown on<lb />the news, and stated that she is<lb />also the female officer that<lb />Fordham visited while working.<lb />This low tactic was used as a<lb />smoke screen to hide the truth.<lb />Fordham had no choice reference<lb />his selection for the Hearing<lb />Board, and even asked the City to<lb />select someone for him because<lb />he was denied by everyone he<lb />asked. City Manager Ron Kimble<lb />and Chief Hinman both had this<lb />knowledge. Fordham Ts first selec-<lb />tion was Jessie Harris.<lb /><lb />Fordham supplied names of<lb />other officers, as requested by<lb />Chief Hinman, to support what<lb />he was charged with was common<lb />practice within the Police Depart-<lb /><lb />ment. Chief Hinman used this in-<lb />formation against Fordham by tell-<lb />ing the officers that Fordham filed<lb />a complaint against them.<lb /><lb />This strategy was used to ostra-<lb />cize and assure his fellow officers<lb />would not support him, and they<lb />did not, even though they knew he<lb />was fired wrongly. Fordham not<lb />only supplied names of other male<lb />officers, both black and white who<lb />not only visited Melvin Ts house<lb />while working, but who visited<lb />other female houses while work-<lb />ing. To this date, no other officer<lb />has been told he cannot visit any-<lb />one while working. It should also<lb />be known that female officers visit<lb />members of the same sex while on<lb />duty.<lb /><lb />If you, the public, would be hon-<lb /><lb />est, you know you have seen Police<lb /><lb />Officers visit, shop, and take care<lb />of any personal business they want<lb />to while working. Had Chief<lb />Hinman had other officers fol-<lb />lowed, like he did with Fordham,<lb />there would be no officers working<lb />at the Greenville Police Depart-<lb />ment. Prior to Fordham Ts charges,<lb />no officer knew that this practice<lb />was a Violation.<lb /><lb />Let Ts deal with some fact. Prior<lb />to Fordham filing charges against<lb />his supervisor Captain John Ennis<lb />inJuly 1994, Fordham had no docu-<lb />mented violations. During this<lb />month, Fordham was evaluated<lb />and there was no mention of any<lb />misconduct by this supervisor.<lb />After Fordham filed his complaint,<lb />Chief Hinman advised by Captain<lb />Ennis of 18 violations allegedly<lb />made by Fordham which are sup-<lb />posed to be dated as far back as<lb />February 1994. If this is the case,<lb />Captain Ennisshould also be fired<lb />for failing to perform his duties as<lb /><lb />Correctional<lb />Supervisor of the year<lb /><lb />RALEIGH - Central Prison<lb />Warden James B. French will be<lb />named Correctional Supervisor of<lb />the Year by the International As-<lb />sociation of Correctional Officers,<lb /><lb />(IACO), a Chicago based. profes-<lb /><lb />sional organization.<lb /><lb />French was one of approximately<lb />75 nominees from around the coun-<lb />try. He willbe officially recognized<lb />for his leadership, honesty, and<lb />professionalism during a banquet<lb />on Capitol Hill May 6th.<lb /><lb />French, 45, of Sanford, has been<lb />employed by the Department of<lb />Correction for 23 years. He began<lb />his correction career as an officer<lb />at Central Prison. French quickly<lb />rose through the ranks to sergeant,<lb />lieutenant, captain, and deputy<lb />warden. He was appointed war-<lb />den by Correction Secretary<lb />Franklin Freeman last year.<lb /><lb />In nominating French for the<lb />award, Institution Command Man-<lb />ager Gary Dixon said, oMr. French<lb />typifies a Superbowl quarterback<lb />who brings out the best in his<lb />teammates by enabling them to<lb />feel proud oftheir status as a highly<lb />disciplined professional team. ?<lb /><lb /> oI Tm happy to see Mr. French<lb />receive this award, ? Correction<lb />Secretary Franklin Freeman said.<lb /><lb />JAMES B. FRENCH<lb /><lb />munication skills have earned him<lb />respect throughout the prison sys-<lb />tem. This honor not only reflects<lb />well on the warden but the entire<lb />North Carolina Department of<lb />Correction. ?<lb /><lb />IACO was founded ten years<lb />ago as an advocacy group for cor-<lb />rectional officers. Maria provided part of the evening Ts<lb /><lb />musical entertainment.<lb /><lb />Staff Photo: Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />Fordham Ts supervisor by not docu-<lb /><lb />menting these violations at the<lb />time of occurrence. So what was<lb />Captain Ennis thinking in July<lb />when he completed Fordham Ts<lb />evaluation, or were these really<lb />any violations?<lb /><lb />What you have not been told is<lb />that no one saw Fordham working<lb />off duty when he was scheduled to<lb />work. Fordham was charged with<lb />Falsifying Time Records for visit-<lb />ing a female officer and being al-<lb />leged to have worked off duty, but<lb />not tampering with the time<lb />sheets. Fordham Ts Sergeant<lb />handled the time sheets on his<lb />shift, but Chief Hinman wanted to<lb />think differently, so he also used<lb />that charge as a smoke screen.<lb /><lb />If Fordham is a thief then Chief<lb />Hinman has a department full of<lb />thieves. The Greenville Police De-<lb />partment provides escort service<lb />for several businesses in<lb />Greenville, and to the bank, daily.<lb />Officers who worked most of these<lb />escorts, worked permanent day<lb />shift. None of these officers were<lb />called thieves nor were they<lb />charged by Chief Hinman.<lb /><lb />One ranking officer worked off<lb />duty at the University Medical<lb />Center as a Security Guard, while<lb />working for the City as the only<lb />Supervisor on the shift, for six<lb />months or more. The officers had<lb />to take paper work to him at the<lb />hospital cause he could not leave.<lb />He was being paid by the City and<lb />hospital. Chief Hinman had knowl-<lb />edge of this violation, but no<lb />charges have ever been filed<lb />against this ranking officer. This<lb />same officer had his driver Ts li-<lb />cense suspended and drove a po-<lb />lice vehicle with a limited driving<lb />privilege. This same officer Ts name<lb />was placed on the Domestic Vio-<lb />lence log, located at the Pitt County<lb />Sheriff Department for beating his<lb />wife and 19-year old daughter. This<lb />white male Lieutenant was never<lb />charged, suspended or fired.<lb /><lb />A white male Sergeant had a<lb />complaint of Stalking filed against<lb />him. Captain Ennis witnessed this<lb />Sergeant harassing the complain-<lb />ant on her job and no action was<lb />taken. This Sergeant stalked with<lb />the complainant in his police ve-<lb />hicle on city time, and this viola-<lb />tion was reported to the Chief and<lb />no action was taken.<lb /><lb />A. white male, Captain Evans,<lb />wrecked his police vehicle while<lb />off duty, using city gas, transport-<lb />inga family member, and was cited<lb />for the accident. The Greenville<lb />tax payers paid to repair his ve-<lb />hicle and the vehicle he hit. Chief<lb />Hinman was made aware "no ac-<lb />tion was taken.<lb /><lb />Major Simonwich transported a<lb />female, unsworn personnel, in his<lb /><lb />national<lb />that the Blac!<lb />should control<lb />politics and thi<lb />politicains in fi<lb />own community; no<lb />more."<lb /><lb />Mak<lb /><lb />Faces &<lb />Places<lb /><lb />Page 5<lb /><lb />Mrs. Beatrice]<lb />Maye<lb /><lb />Page 2<lb /><lb />police vehicle everyday for several<lb />months, somewhere during the<lb />lunch time hours. It became so<lb />obvious, the female was trans-<lb />ferred to the Brown Building. No<lb />action was taken by Chief Hinman.<lb /><lb />Captain Ennis met a white fe-<lb />male every morning at Krispy<lb />Kreme, at approximately 6:15 am<lb />to 6:30 am for several months.<lb />They would park in the parking<lb />lot, and he would be driving his<lb />police vehicle. This was common<lb />knowledge to most, officers, Had<lb />Chief Hinman had hiin followed<lb />he would have known the fre-<lb />quency of these meetings for non-<lb />police purposes.<lb /><lb />Only three known Sexual Ha-<lb />rassment cases have been filed<lb />within the Greenville Police<lb />Department. In one caseya white<lb />female police officer filed Sexual<lb />Harassment against a white fe-<lb />male Sergeant, white male Ser-<lb />geant, and former Lt. <lb />Open letter to President Clinton and congressional leaders<lb /><lb />ae<lb />A<lb /><lb /> ~A joint letter from a coalition of diverse organizations concerned about civil rights<lb /><lb />: Inthe current climate of under-<lb /> ~standable fury at the bombing in<lb /> ~Oklahoma City and of justifiable<lb />;pride in the accomplishment of the<lb /> ~FBI and other law enforcement<lb /> ~organizations, we urge you to ex-<lb /> ~amine any new counterterrorism<lb /> ~proposals with calm deliberation<lb /> ~and in light of their constitutional<lb />implications.<lb />* Our hearts go out to the people<lb />pf Oklahoma. Like all Americans,<lb />we want to see all those respon-<lb />eible for the bombing brought to<lb />justice and quick rebuilding of the<lb />Dklahoma community affected by<lb />this disaster. The national gov-<lb />érnment has a responsibility to<lb />provide for the safety of the Ameri-<lb />can people, but you are now con-<lb />sidering measures that threaten<lb />our basic freedoms.<lb /><lb />We are strongly opposed to pro-<lb />visions of the Omnibus<lb />Counterterrorism Act of 1995, H.R.<lb />896 or S. 390, which allow the<lb />government to engage in activities<lb />contrary to constitutional prin-<lb />ciples of due process, free speech,<lb />and freedom of association. We<lb />are also strongly opposed to pro-<lb /><lb />posals toincrease the government's<lb />authority to monitor groups, do-<lb />mestic and international, in the<lb />absence of reasonable suspicion of<lb />criminal activity.<lb /><lb />We are fully supportive of law<lb />enforcement, but history is clear<lb />that when the nation has overre-<lb />acted in moments of crisis, the<lb />results have been bad for basic<lb />freedoms and have diverted law<lb />enforcement from its basic mis-<lb />sion of apprehending criminals.<lb /><lb />If federal law enforcement agen-<lb />cies need more resources, we sup-<lb />port that, as long as they are well<lb />thought-out, focused on criminal<lb />conduct and otherwise consistent<lb />with constitutional principles. We<lb />urge you not to act rashly. We urge<lb />you to allow full public participa-<lb />tion in your hearings and delib-<lb />erationson any legislation. Finally,<lb />we urge you to avoid undermining<lb />constitutional protections.<lb /><lb />This joint statement was en-<lb />dorsed on April 26 by officials from<lb />the following organizations:<lb /><lb />Correspondents may direct in-<lb />quiries to the following organiza-<lb />tions and listed representatives.<lb /><lb />Where is Judy Whitfield<lb /><lb />the EMS team.<lb /><lb />cluding prevention.<lb /><lb />all ages!<lb /><lb />approximately 750,000 EMS providers nationwide. What a great time to<lb /><lb />discover a little more about your local<lb />utility. As part of our yearlong anniver-<lb />sary celebration, and in honor of National<lb />Drinking Water Week, GUC will have an<lb />OPEN HOUSE at the Water Treatment<lb />Plant (WTP) on Saturday, May 13 from<lb /><lb />10 a.m.'- noon. At that time, you can meet<lb />the WTP staff and see firsthand how your<lb /><lb />water is treated.<lb />During National Drinking Water<lb /><lb />Week, May 7-13, GUC will be focusing on<lb />water quality issues of concern to custom-<lb />ers. Today's topic is FLUORIDE. Fluo-<lb />tide, which is commonly used in water<lb />systems today, was discovered by a dentist<lb />in 1902 as a way of preventing cavities. It<lb />was first introduced into water supplies in<lb /><lb />the 1950s.<lb /><lb />Greenville Utilities water contains<lb />fluoride in two ways. First, our 2 deep<lb /><lb />wells (that provide 11% of our water)<lb /><lb />contain fluoride naturally through ground-<lb /><lb />National Drinking Water Week<lb /><lb />May 7-13, 1995<lb /><lb />water deposits. Second, we add a liquid<lb />fluoride compound to the water that is<lb />treated at the Water Treatment Plant.<lb /><lb />Levels of fluoride in drinking<lb />water are controlled by state and federal<lb />regulations. Water supplied by GUC<lb />meets or exceeds all of these regula-<lb />tions. In the event that water supplied<lb />by GUC failed to meet these regula-<lb />tions, GUC would be required to notify<lb />the public.<lb /><lb />Along with other water systems<lb />that add fluoride, GUC must submit<lb />weekly reports and a monthly summary<lb />of our levels of fluoride to state and<lb />federal regulators. We continually<lb />monitor our water to make sure that it is<lb />safe for our customers.<lb /><lb />We hope to see you at the OPEN<lb />HOUSE at the Water Treatment Plant<lb />located on Old River Road. It's May<lb />13th from 10 a.m. - noon. This Captain is cur-<lb />rently the black female Ts supervi-<lb />sor and has been charged by her<lb />with retaliation.<lb /><lb />What is wrong with this pic-<lb />ture? Both white officers were<lb />cleared prior to the investigation,<lb />but the black female Ts charges were<lb /><lb />more severe and criminal, but no<lb />action was taken by Chief Hinman.<lb /><lb />Howcan anyone make theclaim<lb />of their not being racism in the<lb />Police Department based on ev-<lb />erything that Ts happened?<lb /><lb />Black officers who are alleged to<lb />have violated any policies are<lb />placed on leave or transfered, while<lb />the misconduct of white officers T<lb /><lb />never reaches their personnel file.<lb /><lb />The only two officers who have<lb />made public statements in behalf<lb />of the Greenville Police Depart-<lb />ment are Officer Kelvin Jones and<lb />Officer Robbie Williams. Both of<lb />these officers together did not feel<lb />as supportive of the current ad-<lb />ministration prior to the dismissal<lb />of Lt. Fordham. As a fact, they<lb />devised a list of concerns they had<lb />with this Chief, and were per-<lb />suaded by a white male ranking<lb />officer not tosubmit them toP.B.A.<lb />Now using P.B.A. Ts name they say<lb />that there Ts nothing wrong with<lb />the Police Department.<lb /><lb />Both officers were not on Chief<lb />Hinman Ts best side prior to this<lb />situation with Fordham. As a mat-<lb />ter of fact, Officer Jones was de-<lb />nied a transfer to the Juvenile<lb />Unit because of his personal life.<lb />During this time while married,<lb />he was dating a white female of-<lb />ficer. Why wasn Tt Jones followed<lb />during this time? He was visiting<lb />the residence of a female officer<lb />while on duty, but Chief Hinman<lb /><lb />CAR. Gallagher Westfal findings<lb /><lb />had no problem with Jones. Both<lb />of these officers were allowed to<lb />co-habitate as husband and wife.<lb /><lb />And Officer Williams had the<lb />nerve to allude in one article he<lb />wrote, that Fordham Ts alleged mis-<lb />conduct should not be allowed.<lb />Funny, he would say that. Why<lb />wasn Tt he place on administrative<lb />leave when a complaint of Sexual<lb />Assault was filed against him.<lb /><lb />The Coalition Against Racism<lb />not only have witnessed, but have<lb />received anonymous letters and<lb />calls on the Chief and other offic-<lb />ers violating their policies. Chief<lb />Hinman has and is continuing to<lb />practice racism and injustices, and<lb />these practices are condoned by<lb />the City Manager, Mayor and City<lb />Council.<lb /><lb />If the City Manager was really<lb />for right, why did he allow a white<lb />male Battalion Chief to get caught<lb /><lb />_in his city vehicle, using city gas,<lb /><lb />and have sex on duty with another<lb />Police Department employee. He<lb />only received three days off with-<lb />out pay. But Kimble tells the pub-<lb />lic, he will not allow misconduct.<lb /><lb />For these reasons and more, we<lb />will continue to march and fight<lb />for the reinstatement of Angelo<lb />Fordham, and for any officer who<lb />is not scared to stand up against<lb />wrong.<lb /><lb />Now you have the facts and the<lb />truth- the city got exactly what it<lb />paid for from Pat Gallagher.<lb /><lb />Fulani says new theory of<lb />development will cure violence<lb /><lb />Well-known African American<lb />developmental psychologist and<lb />political activist Dr. Lenora B.<lb />Fulani says that a recently discov-<lb />ered theory ofhuman development<lb />holds significant promise for cur-<lb />ing violence and other social ills.<lb />But, she adds, this theoretical<lb />breakthrough is not receiving the<lb />recognition it deserves for narrow<lb />political reasons.<lb /><lb /> oFor 20 years, my colleague Dr.<lb />Fred Newman has been working<lb />with developmental theorists,<lb />clinical practitioners, educators<lb />and researchers including myself<lb /><lb />Stanford University-trained phi-<lb />losopher, psychotherapist, author<lb />and political strategist, and the<lb />founder of social therapy.<lb />According to Dr. Fulani, it was<lb />the work of the 1 930 Ts Soviet psy-<lb /><lb />chologist Lev Vygotsky which first<lb />revealed that development is not<lb />basically individualistic. <lb />Paine, Voltaire, Rousseau and the<lb />Age of Enlightenment not with-<lb />standing. Sally Heming was re-<lb />portedly beautiful. "<lb />» Beautiful or not, few female<lb />slaves were spared that particular<lb />shame. He was a white man anda<lb />Slave master, and that Ts what men<lb />do when women are totally at<lb />their disposal. They help them-<lb />selves. (Incidentally, male slaves,<lb />too, were compelled to satisfy their<lb />mistresses in a way that she would<lb />not become pregnant, while her<lb />husband was helping himself down<lb />in the slave quarters, if one ever<lb />wondered at the origin or profi-<lb />ciency of certain sexual practices.)<lb /><lb />But as slavery went, American<lb />slavery was particularly abomi-<lb />nable, and Jefferson was in it up<lb />to his eyeballs. And he was a hypo-<lb />crite about it. He wrote a set of<lb />notes that was later compiled into<lb />a book called Notes on the State of<lb />Virginia.<lb /><lb />In it, he gave forth with his opin-<lb /><lb />Nick Nolte, miscast as Thomas<lb />Jefferson, was the objection of some<lb />people. As written, there wasn Tt<lb />much more that could have been<lb />done with this role. In my opinion,<lb />he wasn Tt that bad. A rather tall<lb />man with a large head would do.<lb />That fits Nolte, and perhaps<lb />Jefferson in more ways than one.<lb /><lb />The search for great depth and<lb />complexity should be abandoned.<lb />If you want to know about some-<lb />one, there are several people whose<lb />opinion is worth more than all<lb />scholarly research. Ask a wife or a<lb />husband, ask a son or daughter,<lb />ask an employee or ... a slave. The<lb />rest is merely a mask to be put on<lb />and taken off.<lb /><lb />The multicultural agenda has<lb /><lb />:<lb />é<lb />;<lb />:<lb />;<lb /><lb />concerning the insti- tution of<lb />slavery and the worth of the Black<lb />race years later.<lb /><lb />He was, in his early years, op-<lb />posed to slavery in principle, al-<lb />though he was born into it. His<lb />father was English and his mother<lb />a common woman of American<lb />birth.<lb /><lb />Sally, Martha - half sisters<lb />Jefferson, in fact, was one of the<lb />largest slave owners in America,<lb />at the time owning 400 slaves. He<lb />inherited over 200 slaves from his<lb />wife Ts estate, along with 500,000<lb />acres. As a point of fact, his wife,<lb />Martha Wales Jefferson, and Sally<lb />Hemings, were half sisters!<lb />Jefferson Ts wife Ts father, John<lb />Wales, availed himself of Sally<lb />Hemings T mother, Betsy.<lb />Jefferson was a typical gentle-<lb />man slaver. And slaves were a<lb />major wealth. Jefferson incurred<lb />his wife Ts father Ts debts along with<lb />land and slaves. His debts were in<lb />England, but Jefferson chose to<lb /><lb />pay them, largely because he and<lb /><lb />Jefferson in Paris T a<lb /><lb />had its effect on Western cul-<lb />ture. There Ts a rush to cement for<lb />a new generation the Western his-<lb />torical heritage. But they wish to<lb />tell it before we tell it! In review-<lb />ing their history in a mature way,<lb />America has been forced to put<lb />childish interpretations aside.<lb /><lb />The ongoing re-evaluation of<lb />Christopher Columbus, who<lb />turned out to be no less than a<lb />monster, has put a face and even a<lb />name on those he oppressed. Other<lb />post-Columbian figures are in for<lb />the same re-evaluation.<lb /><lb />Now Thomas Jefferson, the au-<lb />thor of the Declaration of Indepen-<lb />dence, an American icon and a<lb />goodly man, or so we've been led to<lb />believe, is, in fact, very much a<lb /><lb />i<lb />s<lb /><lb />many of the founding fathers did<lb />not want the American Revolution<lb /><lb />to be seen as lawless. Many, in-<lb /><lb />cluding Alexander Hamilton,<lb />wished to persuade English banks<lb />and financiers to invest in the new<lb />nation. Were Jefferson not to pay<lb />his debts by reason of the revolu-<lb />tion, it would have set a bad ex-<lb />ample.<lb /><lb />Jefferson was a very, very pre-<lb />cise man. He listed and recorded<lb />everything. The names of all his<lb />slaves were recorded in his farm<lb />book. Black historian J. A Rogers<lb />had a special ire of Jefferson and<lb />complained about him in several<lb />books. Because of slavery,<lb />Jefferson was able to be the learned<lb />gentleman, poring over his books,<lb />reading the Greek philosophers,<lb />studying Latin and Greek. But he<lb />learned little from the Greek phi-<lb />losophers he studied. Many of the<lb />Greek philosophers were slaves,<lb />but were still educated, some even<lb />doctors and healers.<lb /><lb />Refused slave education<lb />Jefferson refused to educate any<lb /><lb />of his slaves, even his own<lb />children.by Sally Hemings. He did<lb /><lb />not believe in educating slaves.<lb />And, in fact, he did not even teach<lb />them to read and write. Further-<lb />more, although he knew exactly<lb />what was going on at Monticello,<lb />he personally removed himself<lb /><lb />from direct contact with most |<lb /><lb />slaves.<lb /><lb />The trades taught on the plan-<lb />tation were the making of nails,<lb />which he sold around the entire<lb />country. Jefferson reportedly<lb />brought Sally Hemings T older<lb />brother, James, with him to<lb /><lb />France to learn French<lb />pastrymaking, but conned him<lb />into returning to America with<lb />him by undermining his confi-<lb />dence in himself.<lb /><lb />As for his relationship with Sally<lb />Hemings, he was the sub- ject of<lb />newspaper stories at the time<lb />(circa 1802). He would never<lb />respond to the stories. Instead, he<lb />hid Sally away in his house.<lb /><lb />He had a secret staircase built<lb />from his study to Sally Ts room.<lb /><lb />Sally had his and her first- born<lb />while in Paris, or shortly after his<lb />return. His name was Tom, with<lb />the last name taken as as Minton.<lb />Reportedly the boy slave looked so<lb /><lb />whitewash<lb /><lb />man of his era, of his generation.<lb />No more and no less.<lb />Protecting his rep?<lb /><lb />In many ways oJefferson in<lb />Paris ? attempts to salvage his<lb />reputation. And in doing so may<lb />have made things worse. It<lb />downplayed this and cleaned up<lb />that, told the truth a little, and<lb />didn Tt tell the truth a lot.<lb /><lb />Much research was put into au-<lb />thentic costumes, furnishings and<lb />trappings of the late 1700s.<lb />Jefferson went to Paris for a few<lb />years as America Ts ambassador,<lb />all but witnessing the French Revo-<lb />lution, which he didn Tt believe<lb />would have gone as far as it did.<lb /><lb />The observations of pre-revolu-<lb />tionary France were the film Ts<lb /><lb />strong points, but what every-<lb />one came to see, the relationship<lb />between Jefferson and Sally<lb />Hemings, his slave, was played<lb />rather dry and empty on one hand<lb />and dishonestly on the other.<lb /><lb />Sally Hemings was a mere 14<lb />years old when she got involved<lb />with Jefferson, then 42. But the<lb />film portrays the relationship as<lb />being Sally Ts idea, and indeed her<lb />fault. She seduced him, threw her-<lb />self at him with her wicked buck<lb />dance and chicken imitations! It<lb />was more than a man could bear!<lb />He was also trying to have a rela-<lb />tionship with an artist, a Mrs.<lb />Sonway, who was married to a<lb />well-known English painter,<lb />whom the film maintains was gay.<lb /><lb />Take It OnThe Road |<lb />And Open ~Er Up.<lb /><lb />Motorola rig hen<lb /><lb />Only<lb /><lb />(With $20 Rebate From Motorola)<lb /><lb />PERBORA.<lb />COA PRCAT OR<lb /><lb />CATAL,<lb /><lb />¢q<lb />wd<lb />]<lb />4<lb />0<lb /> ~4<lb /><lb />| ® Ao<lb /><lb />Right now at Southeastern Cellujar, take a Motorola flip phone<lb />on the road for only $59.95* with a $20 rebate from Motorola.<lb /><lb />The price includes the phone, activation fee and first months<lb /><lb />access fee. Certain restrictions apply.<lb /><lb />much like Jefferson it was stun-<lb />ning and embarrassing. :<lb /><lb />Rather than send the boy to<lb />Europe to be educated as some<lb />planters did,filling many schools<lb />with their guilty issue, he kept the<lb />boy on the Virginia estate and did<lb />not educate him at all! Nor did he<lb />free him! At the age of 12, the boy<lb />looked so much like Jefferson, he<lb />sold him away to another planta-<lb />tion nearby, the Woodson estate,<lb />and no record of him was entered<lb />into his solid- very-precise records.<lb /><lb />Sally Ts other children were listed:<lb />two sons and two daugh-ters. More-<lb />over, there were other Black de-<lb />scendants of Jefferson other than<lb />from Sally Hemings. He had other<lb />concubines, if only to keep Sally in<lb />check.<lb /><lb />According to the story,<lb />Jefferson Ts wife, Martha Wales<lb />Jefferson, made Jefferson prom-<lb />ise on her death bed that he would<lb />not marry and put her children<lb />under another woman. It was a<lb />foolish request, and Martha was a<lb />soft and pampered woman. She<lb />also reportedly requested that the<lb />slaves be freed, but Jefferson could<lb />only carry her requests so far. So<lb />Sally was a concubine, to put the<lb />best face on it.<lb /><lb />In Arabcountries, the slave chil-<lb />dren by the master were free and<lb />had to be educated. Also, a master<lb />could marry a slave, although it<lb />was not encouraged. This was not<lb />the case in American slavery. In<lb />fact, it was against the lawin many<lb />states. In Roman slavery, which<lb />was<lb /><lb />chattel slavery, the slaves weré<lb />allowed to be educated, and could<lb />buy their freedom and indeed live<lb />in the same town as their former<lb />masters.<lb /><lb />It was interesting that Jefferson,<lb />in the Notes on the State of Vir-<lb /><lb />The historical onusis not against<lb />Jefferson because he slept with<lb />Sally Hemings, but because he<lb />denied her, and her kin, and in-<lb />deed all Blacks, their intellectual<lb />and human dignity.<lb /><lb />He was paternalisticand benign,<lb />fully aware of the evils of slavery,<lb />yet not able to singularly break<lb />with the institution, which totally<lb />supported him. Still, he wrote The<lb />Declaration of Independence,one<lb />of the great documents of the world.<lb />That cannot be taken from him.<lb /><lb />It is interesting to acknowledge<lb />that it was great men and women<lb />of color that forced America to live<lb />up-to its Constitution.<lb /><lb />As an additional note, a protege<lb />of Jefferson, Edward Coles, influ-<lb />enced by Jefferson Ts early ideal-<lb />ism, approached him and sought<lb />his opinion on Coles decision to<lb />free his slaves. Jefferson advised<lb /><lb />Media Watch<lb />By Abiola Sinclair<lb /><lb />ginia, made a comparison of an-<lb />cient slavery with American sla-<lb />very and came to the T conclusion<lb />that the great slaves of Greece and<lb />Rome, such as Epictetus, rose<lb />above their slave state because<lb />they Were white. Thus, Blacks were<lb />naturally unable to reason.<lb /><lb />So while the privileged son of a<lb />wealthy planter was studying<lb />Greek, Blacks were laboringin the<lb />fields. He even had a Black boy-<lb />hood friend named Jupiter, as the<lb />fashion was to give Blacks Greek<lb />names. In Boston, Rhode Island<lb />and Connecticut, it was the style<lb />to educate the Black boyhood com-<lb />panion. Remember in the film<lb /> oGlory, ? where Lt. Colonel Shaw Ts<lb />Black boyhood friend joined the<lb />army to be near him? He was well<lb />educated. ©<lb /><lb />Learned Black men<lb /><lb />Also, George Washington knew<lb />that Jefferson Ts assessments were<lb />faulty, as a learned group of Black<lb />men had formed a federation called<lb />the Free African Society and had<lb />lobbied Washington to raise the<lb />issue of the abolition of slavery<lb />once and for all at the Constitu-<lb />tional Convention. Charles Forten,<lb />New England shipping magnate;<lb />Rev. Richard Allen; Benjamin<lb />Banniker, who wrote Jefferson a<lb />scathing letter concerning his re-<lb />marks and opinions - all these<lb />Black men were known to the<lb />Founding Fathers at the time of<lb />the revolution.<lb /><lb />At the time Jefferson was writ-<lb />ing his Notes on the State of Vir-<lb />ginia, Black men owned property<lb />and had trade federations. Indeed,<lb />Jefferson Ts words helped to disen-<lb />franchise them because his posi-<lb />tion as a Founding Father carried<lb />so much weight. Thus, he becomes<lb />an enemy of the Black race.<lb /><lb />him-against it, maintaining that<lb />it would be better if they were<lb />cared for in the troubled times<lb />ahead.<lb /><lb />But Coles decided against<lb />Jefferson Ts advice and carried all<lb />of his over 200 slaves to Illinois<lb />and there freed them, set up edu-<lb />cational facilities and lobbied that<lb />Illinois be a free state. He later<lb />became governor of Illinois.<lb /><lb />When Jefferson died in 1826, he<lb />was deeply in debt, having lived<lb />and entertained well. Much of the<lb />property, including over 135<lb />slaves, had to be sold. He did not<lb />free Sally Hemings in his will,<lb />perhaps feeling she had nowhere<lb />to go. His daughter, Alice, freed<lb />her two years later and she went<lb />to live with her eldest son Madi-<lb />son, whom Jefferson had freed in<lb />his will.<lb /><lb />Tuckson speaks at<lb />sraduation ceromony<lb /><lb />One of the country Ts leading Af-<lb />rican-American academic<lb />physicians,Reed V.
