Once more a Black man<lb />was fingered as the culprit. Now,<lb />even after it has been disclosed<lb />that Smith was lying, it only fur-<lb /><lb />ther confirms how easy and conve- "<lb /><lb />nient it is to lay the blame on a<lb />Black man, to make himthe scape-<lb />goat, the malevolent bogeyman.<lb />But her confession is not clem-<lb />ency, nor does it provide us with<lb />comfort.<lb /><lb />Rev. Al Sharpton put the inci- .<lb /><lb />dent in perspective last Saturday<lb />at P.S. 175. oShe knew that if she<lb />claimed a Black did it, they would<lb />go with it, ? Sharpton asserted.<lb /> oThey talk about how she was crazy<lb />and didn Tt know what she was<lb />doing; well, she was sane enough<lb />to say a Black man did it. You see,<lb />all of us Blacks are suspect in<lb />America. ?<lb /><lb />Sadly, there isnothing new about<lb />Susan Smith Ts criminal reflexes,<lb />her Medea-like action. The annals<lb />of American history are overflow-<lb />ing with case after case of Black<lb />men being falsely accused of mur-<lb />der, rape and other crimes. Check<lb /><lb />- out Ralph Ginzburg Ts o100 Years<lb /><lb />of Lynching ? (Black Classic Press,<lb />1988) and witness some of the al-<lb />leged rape charges that led to the<lb />death of Black men.<lb /><lb />Remember the Scottsboro boys<lb />of the 1930s? These nine African-<lb />Americans, from ages 13-21, were<lb />snatched from a freight train in<lb />1931in Alabama and charged with<lb />the gang rape of two White women.<lb /><lb />Spared the chair<lb /><lb />Despite questionable evidence,<lb />they were tried, found guilty and<lb />sentenced to the electric chair.<lb />After several years of trials and<lb />the dedicated work of the Commu-<lb />nist Party and the NAACP, they<lb />were spared the chair, but half of<lb />them served long jail sentences.<lb /><lb />Add to this the case of Willie<lb />McGee, a Mississippi truck driver<lb />whose White lover accused him of<lb />rape in 1945 after her husband<lb />discovered the affair. He was elec-<lb />trocuted in 1951.<lb /><lb />And there were other noted cases<lb />of Black men begin unjustly<lb />charged and convicted on the ba-<lb />sis of flimsy evidence. The Tren-<lb />ton Sixin 1948 were condemned to<lb />death for allegedly murdering a<lb />White man. They were sentenced<lb />to terms of life imprisonment.<lb /><lb />The Martinsville Seven of Vir-<lb />ginia were convicted by all White<lb />jury for allegedly raping a White<lb />woman in 1949. Nationwide pro-<lb />test were to no avail, and by 1951<lb />all of them were executed.<lb /><lb />Alittle over five years ago, there<lb /><lb />was the Stuart affair in Boston. In<lb />this incident, asin the Smith hoax,<lb />a Black man was blamed in a<lb />carjacking and the death of Carol<lb />Stuart. It was later discovered that<lb />Charles Stuart had killed his preg-<lb />nant wife as they returned home<lb />from child birth class.<lb /><lb />Unlike the Smith episode, sev-<lb />eral Black men were apprehénded<lb />and one, Willie Bennett, charged<lb />with the crime. Stuart eventually<lb />committed suicide when his big lie<lb />began to fall apart.<lb /><lb />The Stuart and Smith charges<lb />unraveled, but how many other<lb /><lb />Black men are incarcerated or dead<lb />because of the lies perpetrated by<lb />White men and women? So long as<lb />this society is able to keep a fresh<lb />veneer on the stereotype of the<lb />Black man as beast, monster and<lb />ogre, We can expect to be hounded<lb />and hunted as fall guys.<lb /><lb />And aracistclimate that bristles<lb />with a Bob Grant, a Charles<lb />Murray and his infamous oBell<lb />Curve, ? and the racist confessions<lb />of David Milch, co-creator of the<lb />popular TV show oNYPD Blue, ?<lb />signals that things will get much<lb />worse before they get better.<lb /><lb />THIS<lb />SPACE<lb />COULD<lb /><lb />BE<lb />MAKING<lb />YOU $$$<lb /><lb />) The Filling Station Restaurant<lb /><lb />\)<lb />\)<lb />\<lb /> ~<lb /><lb />Catering<lb /><lb /> ~5<lb />oreo lunen \<lb />%: 1:00 Unty NY<lb />Dally Specials Include:<lb />Fresh Chopped BBO, BBQ<lb />Chicken, Backbone, Ham & New<lb />Cabbage, Chicken Pasiry.. This<lb />year was no exception. African<lb />American leaders around thecoun-<lb />try are beginning to analyze what<lb />the Republican victory means for<lb />the Black community, what it<lb />means for the Democratic Party<lb />and what it means for the future of<lb />Black participation in independent<lb /><lb />License<lb />requirements<lb />for pesticides<lb /><lb />Application of certain pesticides<lb />requires licensing. Here are some<lb />recorninendations for proper use<lb />of pesticides in North Carolina.<lb /><lb />The Environmental Protection<lb />Agency, or EPA, classifies some<lb />pesticides as orestricted use, ?<lb />which means they can only be pur-<lb />chased and used by certified/i-<lb />censed applicatots or under their<lb />direct supervision. Except for re-<lb />stricted use pesticides,<lb />horneowners may apply pesticides<lb />to property they own or lease with-<lb />out a license. However, according<lb />to state law, anyone who applies<lb /><lb />any pesticide on olands or proper-<lb />ties of another ? in North Carolina<lb /><lb />rnust have a pesticide applicator<lb />licellse. The term oland, ? as de-<lb />fined by law, includes all land and<lb />water areas, all plants, animals,<lb /><lb />portant to follow label directions<lb />for use, storage and disposal. In-<lb />formation on the label must be<lb />approved by the EPA and is en-<lb />forceable by law. Following label<lb />directions helps to prevent inju-<lb />ries to people, animals, plants and<lb />the environment.<lb /><lb />Take the steps to obtain the ap-<lb /><lb />politics.<lb /><lb />On November 21 in New York,<lb />three weeks after conservative<lb />Republican George Pataki was<lb />elected governor, Black leaders<lb />met at the Memorial Baptist<lb />Church in Harlem, at the invita-<lb />tion of Reverend Al Sharpton. at-<lb />tended by some 50 Black leaders<lb />from around the state, the meet-<lb />ing included Democrats (among<lb />them State Senator David Pater-<lb />son) Republicans (among them<lb />Hempstead mayor Jim Gardner)<lb />and independents (among them<lb />myself, now the chair of the Com-<lb />mittee for a Unified Independent<lb />Party and an activist in Indepen-<lb />dence Fusion, New York Ts newest<lb />ballot status party; along with at-<lb /><lb />3 towaed Black unity ¢<lb /><lb />torney Colin Moore, a leader of the<lb />Freedom Party). The independent<lb />option has come of age for the<lb />Black community over the last<lb />year; its inclusion in the most criti-<lb />cal dialogue on strategies for our<lb />empowerment is, in my opinion, a<lb />significant development.<lb /><lb />The participants at the Novem-<lb />ber 21 meeting decided to organize<lb />for a statewide Black political con-<lb />vention to be held within the next<lb />few months. The organizing com-<lb />mittee, led by Reverend Sharpton,<lb />includes Democrats, Republicans<lb />and independents.<lb /><lb />Reverend Sharpton and I agreed<lb />at the meeting that it was critical<lb />that the Black convention create<lb />an environment in which diverse<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />for Holiday Cash, call us!<lb /><lb />Cash Loans<lb />~ $1,200 -<lb /><lb />BRING THIS AD TO OUR OFFICE WHEN YOU MAKE<lb /><lb />NATIONAL FINANCE COMPANY<lb /><lb />105 Arlington Blvd.<lb />Greenville, NC<lb />756-6100<lb /><lb />$2,500<lb /><lb />WE NOW ACCEPT bia<lb /><lb />opinions and strategies can be pre-<lb />sented and discussed.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, such an environ-<lb />ment was not created during the<lb />recently completed election sea-<lb />son in New York; in certain Black<lb />leadership circles it was effectively<lb />open season on me. I was attacked<lb />for being an independent (some-<lb />thing our community desperately<lb />needs), for a rking with whites<lb />(something every Black leader<lb />does); and for not being a oreal<lb />Democrat T (this by a Black Demo-<lb />cratic Party elected official who<lb />was working for the white incum-<lb />bent governor I was challenging).<lb />Virtually no one in Black leader-<lb />ship circles stood up to stop those<lb />attacks.<lb /><lb />Since the first meeting of this<lb />group of Black leaders, I have been<lb />singled out for attack by one Black<lb />newspaper writer (who in the past<lb />has called Reverend Sharpton a<lb /> oscumbag ?). I have asked Rever-<lb />end Sharpton to insist upon a fair<lb />framework for the conduct of the<lb />convention and to set a strict stan-<lb /><lb />Give ~em a<lb /><lb />Twice the space.<lb />Room for<lb />EVERYTHING.<lb /><lb />; WHAT TO GIVE<lb />THE PERSON WHO HAS<lb /><lb />i EVERYTHING<lb /><lb />} EXCEPT A PLACE TO KEEP IT<lb /><lb />custom-designed<lb />California Closet.<lb /><lb />CALL FOR A FREE IN-HOME CONSULTATION<lb /><lb />ee a a a a ad<lb /><lb />dard for respect of all participants.<lb />I believe he is uniquely positioned<lb />to do so.
