He appears<lb />to be getting bad advice from some-<lb />one that his best political move in<lb />1994 is to join the jumbled U.S.<lb />Senate race in the Old Dominion .<lb />. . not as the Democratic Party<lb />nominee, but as an independent.<lb /><lb />On the contrary, Gov. Wilder Ts<lb />best move is to spend this year and<lb />next campaigning to become oMr.<lb />Democrat, ? in the same way former<lb />President Ronald Reagan spent<lb />the year Ts between his failed 1976<lb />bid to win the Republican Presi-<lb />dential nomination, and his even-<lb />tual landslide electoral victory in<lb />1980, defeating incumbent Jimmy<lb />Carter.<lb /><lb />' In 1976, one season before his<lb /><lb />. eventual victory, Mr. Reagan chal-<lb /><lb />i his party's oflawed ? incum-<lb />bent, President Gerald Ford, but<lb />failed to wrest the nomination.<lb />That year he was already consid-<lb />to be oold ? for a presidential<lb />| contender. Wilder<lb />already decided not to challenge<lb />his party Ts oflawed ? incumbent<lb />Senator, Charles Robb, in the June<lb />14th Virginia Democratic primary.<lb />That was a smart decision. Mr.<lb />Wilder Ts biggest knock, among the<lb />general publicandin hisown party,<lb />comes from his on-going feud with<lb />Senator Robb. But instead of now<lb />being oReagan-esque ? and playing<lb />the role of a ogood soldier, ? by help-<lb />ing his rival to win or lose, for the<lb />sake of the party and its prin-<lb />ciples, he is about to become the<lb /> ospoiler ? who will be blamed for<lb />Senator Robb Ts almost certain de-<lb />feat to oflawed ? Republican nomi-<lb /><lb />nee Oliver North.<lb /><lb />So dissatisfied are many Vir-<lb />ginia Republicans and the party's<lb />national Senate leadership with<lb />Mr. North Ts admission that he lied<lb />to Congress during the Iran-<lb />Contra scandal, that they will<lb />likely draft and support the inde-<lb />pendent candidacy of former Vir-<lb />ginia Attorney General Marshall<lb />Coleman, the man Wilder defeated<lb />in 1989 to become Governor.<lb /><lb />So why doesn Tt Governor Wilder<lb />just sit this one out, let the Repub-<lb />licans squabble and fight, work<lb />the orubber chicken ? banquet cir-<lb />cuit helping Democrats get elected<lb />to local offices, and thencome back<lb />in 1996 to challenge the now-un-<lb />popular incumbent Republican<lb />U.S. Senator,John Warner? He was born in<lb />Selma (Johnston County) and<lb />' worked to improved his family Ts<lb />economic situation. His parents<lb />instilled in him the importance of<lb />education as well as sharing his<lb />knowledge to help others.<lb /><lb />Jenkins was a realist and knew<lb />that one Ts attitude determined<lb />one Ts success in life.<lb /><lb />At an early age, Jenkin Ts<lb />philosphy was tested. His father<lb />was killed in a trash truck acci-<lb />dent. It was a difficult time for<lb />him, but he stayed the course on<lb />faith. Jenkins knew that his fa-<lb />ther wanted him to excel in any<lb />endeavor, and decided to do<lb />extradinary things to make life<lb />better for humanity - and he did.<lb /><lb />After graduating from high<lb />school, Jenkins enrolled at Eliza-<lb />beth City State University, where<lb />he earned his B.S. degree in<lb />biology at the Graduate School of<lb />Biological Sciences, Purdue Uni-<lb /><lb />versity, and Ph. <lb />MR. JOHN MAYE<lb /><lb />This period of time is unoffi-<lb />cially oHigh School Graduation<lb />Week ? in North Carolina and<lb />throughout the United States.<lb />During this time, students, teach-<lb />ers parents have high hopes and<lb />great expectations for future op-<lb />portunities of good fortune and<lb />excellence. Life, after all, has many<lb /> orites of passages, ? and high school<lb />graduation ranks among the fore-<lb />most initial ventures for a quality<lb />and productive entry toward suc-<lb />cess.<lb />As many young people prepare<lb />for life after high school, I share<lb />some antidotes for a happy and<lb /><lb />WEEK OF JUNE 30 - JULY 6, 1994<lb /><lb />ce upon completio<lb /><lb />long life which all young people,<lb />indeed all human beings, must to<lb />consider.<lb /><lb />1. What is your name? Every<lb />day of your life one defines his<lb />reputation. What does your name<lb />mean? How doothers think of you?<lb />What does your name mean to<lb />you? According to oEbony ? maga-<lb />zine for April 1994, former Vir-<lb />ginia Governor Douglas Wilder<lb />told a group of Shaw University<lb />students his father employed him,<lb /> oBoy, don Tt mess up my name! I<lb />have worked all of my life for my<lb />name to mean something. ? How do<lb />your friends think of you? What<lb />will your teachers or co-workers<lb />say about you when prospective<lb />employers or college officials con-<lb />tact them for a reference? Remem-<lb />ber your name. You define your<lb />name and earn your reputation<lb />through the way you live daily.<lb /><lb />2. Accept Yourself. The value of<lb />a lifelong educatiofal attitude is<lb />you become willing to accept your-<lb />self as you are. Regardless of cir-<lb />cumstance, size, condition, encoun-<lb />ter, or challenge, learn to acknowl-<lb />edge your strengths and weak-<lb />nesses as a person, and to move<lb />forward with a personal plan and<lb />purpose for improvement. I heard a minister state in a<lb />sermon several months ago that<lb />only two percent of employed<lb />Americans of all ages do not re-<lb />quire the on-going monitoring and<lb />supervision of a boss or a superior.<lb />That two percent is selfstarters<lb />and self-evaluators who perform<lb />more on the job than the job de-<lb />scription specifics. They come to<lb />work early (never are tardy) and<lb />stay late. They define their own<lb />goals above and beyond the<lb />organization Ts or job Ts goals. They<lb />work at work; they do not loath or<lb />cheat. Time is precious, and they<lb />give a productive day Ts work. I<lb />encourage every person about to<lb /><lb />uf fey<lb /><lb />graduate from high school to ex-<lb />pect to work hard and learn to<lb />enjoy and perform an honest hard<lb />day Ts work for virtue, value, and<lb /><lb />victory can be achieved in life and-<lb /><lb />during life through this endeavor.<lb /><lb />4. Watch your habits. Habits are<lb />activities in which we engage that<lb />become you ? is a statement my<lb />mother has told me frequently. In<lb />this contemporary society, most<lb />technical jobs-working on machin-<lb />ery, piloting airplanes or driving<lb />vehicles, handling lab equipment-<lb />requires that any prospective em-<lb />ployee must take and pass a drug<lb />test as entry to the job opportu-<lb />nity. I urge all students and people<lb />to be careful with any habit you<lb />think you want to dot because it<lb />carries with it a tremendous con-<lb /><lb />lo. 3, iil let Se hs ia es<lb /><lb />sequence.<lb /><lb />5. With all you getting, get God<lb />in your Life. People can become so<lb />busy pursuing the American<lb />dreams-cars, houses, boats,<lb />luxury-that we ignore the need for<lb />a spirtual relationship to sustain<lb />our lives and provide balance and<lb />value in living. It is imperative for<lb />every young person to achieve a<lb />relationship with God to help you<lb />through this life. We cannot make<lb />it as John Donne stated oas an<lb />island unto ourselves. ? We cannot<lb />make it in life with drugs, chemi-<lb />cals, and all that glitz and glitter<lb />of the good life. We cannot make it<lb />in life unless we know God, He<lb />becomes oour rock, our fortress,<lb />our compass, our shield, our pro-<lb />vider, our protector, our superior,<lb /><lb /> ~ey rite of passage»<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />our sustainer, our all in all, oour<lb />everything ? that we need to gain<lb />success and a long life. I urge our<lb />young people to find God and re-<lb />main in consistent communica-<lb />tions with Him.<lb /><lb />These antidotés can help all of<lb />us find true meaning in life. I wish<lb />every graduating senior success<lb />with these principles and I invite<lb />every adult an human being to<lb />remain sincere toward the notion<lb />that I can improve my life, too, by<lb />revisiting and by implementing<lb />these principals. oThis si the first<lb />day of the rest of our lives ? so let Ts<lb />do something constructive and<lb />wholesome with these opportuni-<lb />ties.<lb /><lb />From The Desk Of Beatrice Maye<lb /><lb />BEATRICE MA<lb />The Differences<lb />Here Ts a summary of the male<lb />and female personality traits<lb />you've read in this book. Thomas, reg-<lb />istered dietitian and staff nutri-<lb />tionist for Total cereals.<lb /><lb />Planning ahead can give you<lb />more control over your diet says<lb />Thomas. Responsible eating hab-<lb />its while away from home can make<lb />you feel better and make you expe-<lb />rience more enjoyable. Thomas<lb />offers these suggestions:<lb /><lb />° If you know you will be eating<lb />a big dinner, compensate by eat-<lb />ing a lighter breakfast and lunch.<lb /><lb />* Keep lowfat snacks handy. A<lb />trail mix made with whole-grain<lb />cereal, dry roasted (unsalted) nuts<lb />or seeds, pretzels, raisins, dried<lb /><lb />apricots and bananas will keep<lb />well in the car or in a backpack.<lb /><lb />¢ Instead of drinking soda or<lb />alcohol, choose fruit juice or wa-<lb />ter. Simply sprinkle a little of<lb />the desired fresh or dried herb into<lb />your palm. Then rub it with your<lb />thumb to release its aroma and<lb />take a deep whiff. Once you're fa-<lb />miliar with the aroma, taste a<lb />pinch of the herb, rolling it around<lb />all areas of the tongue and palate.<lb /><lb />¢ Another way to acquaint your-<lb />self with the flavor of an herb is to<lb />mix it with a fat-free butter substi-<lb />tute or lowfat cream cheese and<lb />use it as aspread on bread or plain<lb />crackers.<lb /><lb />¢ Add herbs to cold foods hours<lb />before serving so the savory flavor<lb />can permeate the food.<lb /><lb />¢ When cooking with herbs, add<lb />them toward the end of the cook-<lb />ing process. Many herbs lose their<lb />flavor during extended cooking.<lb /><lb />° If you substitute fresh herbs<lb />for dried, as a general rule, the<lb />ratio is 1 tablespoon fresh for ev-<lb />ery 1 teaspoon of dried herbs.<lb /><lb />¢ If herbs have woody stems,<lb />strip the leaves and discard the<lb />stems before chopping.<lb /><lb />¢ To keep herbs fresh, stand<lb />them, stems down, in a glass con-<lb />taining about on-half inch of wa-<lb />ter. Slip a plastic bag over the<lb />herbs to retain moisture.<lb /><lb />¢ Dried herbs will retain their<lb />flavor for approximately one year.<lb /><lb />Consumer<lb />Information<lb />Catalog<lb /><lb /></p>
