Mr Kunjufu books and videos are available at<lb /><lb />Headline II african book store.<lb />Photo by Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />My fellow Citizens of Greenville &amp; Pitt County<lb /><lb />I stand before you today because<lb />for several years I Tve seen the un-<lb />fortunate deterioration in the qual-<lb />ity of life of our youth, senior citi-<lb />zens, and other individuals<lb />trapped in the moderate and low<lb />income low income areas of our<lb />city and county. While I, for years,<lb />was only able to speculate that<lb />crime was getting worse based on<lb />my daily observations, as I trav-<lb />eled through these neighborhoods,<lb />and heard the accounts of mur-<lb />ders, rapes, drug arrests, burglar-<lb />ies, etc. in the local medial; I was<lb />deeply shaken as to the extent of<lb />these problems facing Greenville<lb />&amp; Pitt County when I was pro-<lb />vided a copy of May 9, 1994 edition<lb />of USA Today newspaper. Mrs.<lb />Beatrice Maye, a local leader and<lb />educator, provided me an article<lb />from this publication entitled, oThe<lb />Deadliest Counties in the USA for<lb />Children. <lb /><lb />My fellow citizens, I Tm here to<lb />tell you that I was acutely aware of<lb />our long-standing plight toimprove<lb />the test scores of our youth in local<lb />school; I am equally aware of the<lb /><lb />serious infant mortality problems<lb />we have in this county and the<lb />outstanding effort of the tremen-<lb />dously effect local effort being<lb />waged by the Daily Reflector and<lb />local leaders and volunteers to<lb />address this problem. But not in<lb />my lifetime would I ever expect to<lb />see Pitt County listed as the 10th<lb />deadliest county in the USA for<lb />children. This article reflects that,<lb />based on 1991 crime statistics, Pitt<lb />County was one of the deadliest<lb />counties in the USA for children<lb />killed by guns during an assault or<lb />police shooting, based on the rate<lb />of murders per 100,000 people. (I<lb />offer you a copy of this article as<lb />Handout #1.) Careful analysis of<lb />local crime statistics reflect that a<lb />significant part of Pitt County Ts<lb />crime problems can be attributed<lb />to the statistics reflect that a sig-<lb />nificant part of Pitt County Ts crime<lb />problems can be attributed to the<lb />statistics generated within the City<lb />of Greenville (approximately 83%<lb />of the crime).<lb /><lb />Reviewing Handout #2, we can<lb />see that, except for the year 1992,<lb /><lb />Ms. Johnson accepted<lb />as finalist for Miss NC<lb /><lb />Ms. Ronda N. Johnson, of Wash-<lb />ington, NC has been accepted as a<lb />state finalist for the 1995 Miss<lb />North Carolina USA Pageant.<lb />Ronda is the daughter of Reatha<lb />Johnson and Ronald Johnson, both<lb />of Washington.<lb /><lb />Ronda, a graduate of Washing-<lb />ton High School, is currently at-<lb />tending East Carolina University,<lb />majoring in Pre-law. She works at<lb />the Alpha Beta Nu building on<lb />Hackney Ave.<lb /><lb />Ronda will be competing in Char-<lb /><lb />lotte, NC on November 11 and 12<lb />for the Miss North Carolina USA<lb />title. If she wins, she will be flown<lb />to the national pageant for two<lb />weeks to complete for the Miss<lb />USA title.<lb /><lb />Please keep Ronda in your<lb />prayers and wish her the best of<lb />luck throughout the pageant. If<lb />you would like to sponsor Ronda,<lb />please contact her at Alpha Beta<lb />Nu, 946-4808, between 2:30 and<lb />5:00 p.m.<lb /><lb />there has been a gradual increase<lb />in murders, with the year 1994<lb />showing a drasticincrease (10 thus<lb />far, as opposed to an average of 5.6<lb />murders per year during the pre-<lb />vious 5 years). Other crime statis-<lb />tics presented to local citizens dur-<lb />ing a recent meeting at the<lb />Greenville City Hall reflect a simi-<lb />lar or greater increase in other<lb />violent crimes within the City of<lb />Greenville. In view of the afore-<lb />mentioned, it can be logically de-<lb />duced that, based soley on<lb />Greenville Ts Crime Statistics, Pitt<lb />County will likely be considered<lb />even more deadly for children in<lb />1994.<lb /><lb />It is because of the severity of<lb />this problem and the firm convic-<lb />tions that the Greenville Police<lb />and the Pitt County Sheriff's De-<lb />partment cannot solve these prob-<lb />lems alone, that we come forward<lb />to volunteer our services in an<lb />attempt to mobalize the citizens of<lb />this city and this county in the<lb />implementation and/or modifica-<lb />tion of a plan involving civic, reli-<lb />gious, social, educational, profes-<lb />sional, and political leaders within<lb />the county. This plan addresses a<lb />multi-faceted approach to dealing<lb />with those factors which contrib-<lb />ute to the proliferation of crime<lb />and adversely affects quality of<lb />life of all the citizens of our county.<lb /><lb />There is nothing magical or sa-<lb />cred about these proposals, they<lb />can be modified, eliminated or<lb />changed, for no one possesses sole<lb />domination of brains, thoughts, or<lb />ideas. I do, however ask thatif you<lb />are to be instantly critical or pessi-<lb />mistic about any of these ideas,<lb />that you substitute a better idea<lb />before recommending the elimi-<lb />nation of any proposal.<lb /><lb />I sincerely expect a few indi-<lb />viduals who seek personal recog-<lb />nition as a leader, individuals who<lb />are well respected criminals, indi-<lb /><lb /> "S ee ee ee a ee<lb /><lb />viduals who are self-serving and<lb />inconsiderate of the needs of oth-<lb />ers, not to be supportive of this<lb />effort. However, I sincerely be-<lb />lieve that the preponderance o the<lb />citizens and leaders of community<lb />will see this as an opportunity to<lb />unite to address and rectify two<lb />serious problems facing the citi-<lb />zens of our community.<lb />In-conclusion, I immediately so-<lb />licit the support of all ministerial<lb />alliances, educational, civic, social,<lb />service, fraternal, masonic, and<lb />other organizations within this<lb />county to volunteer their services<lb />in various capacities within our<lb />newly created organization<lb /><lb />(C.0.N.T.A.C.T.) CITIZENS OR-<lb />GANIZED TO ATTACK CRIME<lb /><lb />I especially solicit the involve-<lb />ment of financial experts, crimi-<lb />nologists, religious, social and psy-<lb />chology professionals as well as<lb />grass roots individuals, to lead<lb />individuals, to lead individual task<lb />forces charged to address those<lb />critical factors contributing to the<lb />problems at hand.<lb /><lb />While crime has to be our first<lb />priority, increased taxes are also<lb />of concern. I have taken the liberty<lb />to solicit the help of local people in<lb />reviewing the budget of the City of<lb />Greenville for Fiscal Year 1994-<lb />95, in an attempt to validate the<lb />need for the tax increase recently<lb />voted on and conditionally ap-<lb />proved by the Mayor and the<lb />Greenville City Council. There are<lb />known and suspected areas of<lb />abuse in spending in the City of<lb />Greenville andI sincerely feel that<lb />during these times of austerity,<lb />we must find ways of eliminating<lb />waste and ensuring the effective<lb />use of tax payers dollars.<lb /><lb />In closing, individuals desiring<lb />to get involved in our effort may<lb /><lb />a Continued on Page 8 A<lb /><lb /></p>

" oxh " " case,<lb />which brough segrega-<lb />toa tsa aed . Some<lb />scholars believe the Board deci-<lb />sion was the nation Ts most impor-<lb />tant Supreme Court case in the<lb />last century, if not our entire his-<lb />tory.<lb /><lb />Among the many laudable val-<lb />ues articulated in the Brown deci-<lb />sion, two of the most enduring are<lb />Quality Education and the Impor-<lb />tance of Equality. Although these<lb />values have not been fully real-<lb />ized, they remain as important<lb />today as they were 40 years ago.<lb /><lb />Quality Education For All<lb /><lb />The Brown v. Board of Educa-<lb />tion decision said, oeducation is<lb />perhaps the most important func-<lb />tion of state and local governments.<lb />Compulsory school attendance<lb />laws and the great expenditures<lb />for education both demonstrate our<lb />recognition of the importance of<lb />education to our democratic soci-<lb />ety...itis the very foundation of<lb />citizenship. It is a principal in-<lb />strument in awakening the child<lb />to cultural values, in preparing<lb />him for later professional train-<lb />ing, and in helping him adjust nor-<lb />mally to his environment. <lb /><lb />Today, as America moves into<lb />the 21st century, education re-<lb />mains the key to opening doors of<lb />opportunity for all people in our<lb />society. This Administration has<lb />already made education a corner-<lb />stone o fits plans to rejuvenate the<lb />country. The Brown decision also<lb />considered education vital to de-<lb />mocracy. The Court called educa-<lb />tion, othe foundation of good citi-<lb />zenship and the preparation for<lb /> olater professional training. Simi-<lb />larly, our own policies have em-<lb />phasized these important goals.<lb /><lb />The foundation of good citizen-<lb />ship education is also vital to de-<lb />mocracy. Our National Service<lb />Program recognizes the link be-<lb />tween democratic citizenship and<lb />education as it enables young<lb />people to devote a few years of<lb />their time serving the community<lb />in return for financial assistance<lb />for college.<lb /><lb />Preparation For Professional<lb />Training: Two weeks ago, I signed<lb />the School-to-Work Opportunities<lb />Act, which creates a national sys-<lb />tem to develop and strengthen<lb />programs that help move young<lb />people from school to work by con-<lb />necting school-based earning with<lb />work-based learning. These<lb />measures recognize that the aver-<lb />age Americans will change jobs<lb />several times in his or her lifetime,<lb />resulting in a greater need for life-<lb />long learning.<lb /><lb />The Importance Of Equality<lb /><lb />Forty years after Brown, we af-<lb />firm the belief that our nation Ts<lb />diversity strengthens rather than<lb />divides, us. Then the struggle was<lb />to integrate African Americans<lb />into a society that, by law, segre-<lb />gated them,. The choreo-<lb /><lb />pple sn it Ca<lb /><lb />Africa and depict customs, tradi-<lb />tions, and occasions of African life<lb />as authentically as possible. The<lb />performance is so enticing the au-<lb />dience cannot resist participation.<lb /><lb />Chuck Davis, founder an artis-<lb />tic director of the African-Ameri-<lb />can Dance Ensemble, is consid-<lb />ered by some to the foremost<lb />teacher and choreographer of tra-<lb />ditional African Dance in America.<lb /><lb />cant part of our culture. A Raleigh<lb />native, Davis currently resides<lb />Durham andis an artist-residence<lb />at the American Dance Festival.<lb />For more information, contact<lb /><lb />the Education Department at(919) |<lb /><lb />833-1935.<lb /><lb />Special Envoy<lb /><lb />It didn Tt leak, said a White<lb />House official, not for attribution.<lb /> oIt was President Clinton Ts selec-<lb />tion of former Pennsylvania Rep-<lb />resentative William H. Gray III as<lb />his special enjoy to Haiti. Accord-<lb />ing to the official, Gray met with<lb />National Security Advisor Tony<lb />Lake and then President Clinton<lb />on Saturday, May 7th. Clinton<lb />made the announcement, which<lb />surprised many observers, the fol-<lb />lowing day.<lb /><lb />The President also disclosed new<lb />procedures, allowing Haitians flee-<lb />ing their country to make claims<lb />for political asylum aboard U.S.<lb />owned or leased ships, or in third-<lb />country processing centers. De-<lb />spite the new procedures, Clinton<lb />and his officials have stressed that<lb />the U.S. is not changing its policy<lb />of returning Haitian refugees to<lb />their country. Nevertheless, these<lb />changes were sufficient for Randall<lb />Robinson, TransAfrica Ts Executive<lb />Director, to end his 27 day fast in<lb />protest of Clinton Ts Haiti policy.<lb /><lb />Wade Henderson, director of the<lb /><lb />NAACP"s Washington office called<lb />Clinton Ts selection of Gray as spe-<lb />cial envoy oa brilliant political<lb />master-stroke. He Ts taken a bold<lb />step toward a committment to re-<lb />storing democracy to Haiti. <lb />Henderson adds that the NAACP<lb />is encouraging the administra-<lb />tion to move expeditiously in pur-<lb />suit of a third-country placement<lb />option. He says that it is impor-<lb />tant to establish for Haitians, a<lb />safe-haven from the general vio-<lb />lence in Haiti.<lb /><lb />Gray replaces Lawrence<lb />Pezzulo, who was forced to resign<lb />last month. Pezzulo departed with<lb />criticism of Clinton and his policy,<lb />and Pezzulo was in turn criticized<lb />by Eleanor Holmes Norton, Wash-<lb />ington, D.C. Ts non-voting Congres-<lb />sional Representative. She said<lb />thatthe Congressional Black Cau-<lb />cus, which had been exceptionally<lb />critical of Clinton Ts Hairi policy,<lb />was oprofoundly dissatisfied with<lb />Mr. Pezzulo. He was essentially<lb />getting in bad with the military in<lb />Haiti. Norton indicated that<lb /><lb />Greenville resident<lb />excels<lb /><lb />Tanya'L. Tucker (Streeter), the<lb />daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James<lb />R. Streeter and sister of Staci<lb />Streeter, received her Master of<lb />Science degree in Student Person-<lb />nel/Agency Counseling on May 8,<lb />1994 from North Carolina Agri-<lb />cultural and Technical State Uni-<lb />versity. Henderson says<lb />that Gray Ts position as special en-<lb />voy to Haiti represents a olast clear<lb />chance to negotiate an effective<lb />settlement, and puts positive pres-<lb />sure on everyone to restore Presi-<lb />dent Aristede to office and democ-<lb />racy to Haiti. However, Henderson<lb />adds that while Aristede was demo-<lb />cratically elected, it may be still<lb />necessary for the exiled President<lb />to broaden considerably his politi-<lb />cal base in Haiti.<lb /><lb />Henderson views Gray Ts special<lb />relationship with the Congres-<lb />sional Black Caucus - a group he<lb />once chaired - as a plus. He says<lb />that Gray has a way of cutting to<lb />the quick on important policy ques-<lb />tions, and maintains that because<lb />of his political acumen, Gray will<lb />be unlikely to tolerate the recalci-<lb />trance of Haiti Ts military rulers to<lb />step aside and, at least in the case<lb />of Lieutenant General Raoul<lb />Codras, leave Haiti.<lb /><lb />ST SRSERR AE<lb /><lb />Young people in Greenville take $938,000 to college...General Robert Roper (above) was :<lb />in Greenville on June 1, 1994, promoting students from J.H. While<lb />I sat there a mother with two small<lb />children came in seeking medical<lb />care. Her children Tseyes were red<lb />and swollen; clearly they were suf-<lb />fering from what is commonly<lb /><lb /> ~ galled pink eye, a highly conta-<lb />gious condition which children of-<lb />ten get.<lb /><lb />What was just as clear was that<lb /><lb /> ~We Need A Health Care Re<lb /><lb />while this condition must be<lb />treated, it was not really an emer-<lb />gency room case. Yet for many<lb />poor mothers, the emergency room<lb />is the only medical treatment fa-<lb />cility which they know. For some,<lb />itis the only treatment center any-<lb />where near where they live.<lb />There Ts something wrong with<lb />the health care system in America.<lb />Stories like the one above prove<lb />that. Statistics also prove that.<lb /><lb />as White babies to die before they<lb />celebrate their first birthday-The<lb />rate of AIDS among African Ameri-<lb />cans is more than triple that of<lb />Whites. There Ts something wrong<lb />with a health system that does not<lb />address these issues head-on with<lb />an single payer, culturally-sensi-<lb /><lb />tive, community-based health<lb /><lb />treatment and education program<lb />for everyone, especially for the<lb /> oleast of these. <lb /><lb />What we need in the communi-<lb />ties of people of color is not just<lb />health care reform, but a health<lb />care revolution. Yet even with all<lb />the talk about health care reform<lb />in the country today, little is being<lb />said about the unique needs of our<lb />community with health care prob-<lb />lems more closely parallel to those<lb />of Third World countries than those<lb />of Third World countries than those<lb />of White America.<lb /><lb />re<lb /><lb />1<lb /><lb />12 13 14<lb /><lb />CLUES ACROSS<lb />1.
