Charles S. Robb, state<lb />Sen. Virgil H. North, one oftwocan-<lb />didates seeking the GOP nomina-<lb />tion, has collected $4.5 million and<lb />has spent all but $820.00 of that.<lb /><lb />North Ts campaign claimed that<lb />his donor base-112,000 people- is<lb />the largest for any non-presiden-<lb />tial campaign in American his-<lb />tory.<lb /><lb />His opponent in the June 3-4<lb />GOP convention, former federal<lb />budget director James C. His decision to<lb />run as an independent would<lb />surely raise the ire of longtime<lb />Democratic supporters.<lb /><lb /> oThe party accomodated Gov.<lb />Wilder, and I hope that if he runs,<lb />he runs as a Democrat, ? Demo-<lb />cratic Party Chairman Mark R.<lb />Warner said last week.<lb /><lb />Wilder said that he plans to meet<lb />with a group of supporters this<lb />weekend to plan strategy and that<lb />he expects to hire staff members<lb />and open an office within the next<lb />few weeks. It<lb />only happened because CORE and<lb />a number of other organizations<lb />filed suit challenging the city Ts<lb />right to waive its obligation to<lb />uphold the Constitution. The other<lb />organizations may have had other<lb />reasons for joining in the suit. But<lb />for CORE, the issue was very clear.<lb />We had learned from past history.<lb /><lb /> oThe history of gun control in<lb />America, ? Malcolm X often said,<lb /> ois the history of racial and class<lb />suppression. ?<lb /><lb />Malcolm X was talking about<lb />the strict interpretation of the Sec-<lb />ond Amendment. People have the<lb />right to protect themselves. Dur-<lb />ing slavery, Blacks were prohib-<lb />ited from owning firearms. And,<lb />U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice<lb /><lb />Roger Taney put an exclamation<lb />point on that practice when he<lb />wrote, in Dred Scott v. Sandfrom<lb />(1857), that othe Negro had no<lb />rights which the White man was<lb />bound to respect. . . o<lb /><lb />Following the Civil War, it took<lb />the Freedman Ts Bureau Act of 1866<lb />and the first portion of the 14th<lb />Amendment to the Constitution to<lb />nullify Jim Crow laws passed to<lb />keep Blacks from owning or carry-<lb />ing guns. Blacks had good reasons<lb />for wanting that right regained.<lb />The Ku Klux Klan and many<lb />redneck sheriff's deputies were<lb />picking off unarmed Blacks as if<lb />they were skeet.<lb /><lb />Writer Dan Gifford tells the story<lb /><lb />of how Blacks in Monroe, North<lb />Carolina, armed themselves to<lb />ward off the Klan on October 5,<lb />1957. Eighty carloads of Klansmen<lb />were rode into town to harass Dr.<lb />Albert Perry, a local civil rights<lb />leader. What greeted them were<lb />several hundred rounds of ammu-<lb />nition the Blacks required free of<lb />charge from the U.S. Army,<lb />through their National Rifle Asso-<lb />ciation chapter.<lb /><lb />Certainly, the call for getting<lb />guns out of the hands of criminals<lb />is warranted. But I am not acrimi-<lb />nal, however.<lb /><lb />Now, I carry a gun "legally. The<lb />courts say it is my constitutional<lb />right due to certain reasonable<lb />conditions.<lb /><lb />Min. Talk about<lb />someone using the so-called obully-<lb />pulpit ... ?<lb /><lb />I've known Dr. Muhammad for<lb />several years, and to call him a<lb /> obully ? would be seen by him as a<lb />complement. To say in the words<lb />of the rap-culture that he Ts a<lb /> oroughneck ? would be an under-<lb />statement. He relishes living up to<lb />his historical namesake-Khalid<lb />bin-Walid-a companion of the<lb />Prophet Muhammad of Arabia ,<lb />1400 years ago. That Khalid was<lb />known as othe sword of Islam. ?<lb /><lb />So now, just as his leader-the<lb />Hon. Although<lb />Dr. Muhammad was in the audi-<lb />ence, he was not seated in a place<lb />of honor on the speaker Ts podium,<lb />and Min. Farakhan refused to<lb />publicly chastise his aide.
