ranging dialogue on the subject of
Blacks and Jews. I host the show,

national cablecast throughout the
month of April.
This program is a continuation of
a conversation which took place
between Minister Farrakhan, Dr.
Newman and myself during a pri-
vate meeting in Harlem in early
February, set up at my request. I
have stood up for Minister
Farrakhan against the seemingly
endless attacks on him and the
Nation of Islam by the white estab-
lishment, and I have worked with
Dr. Newman for 15 years in build-
ing the Black-led, multiracial New
Alliance Party, which I chair. I am
proud to have played a partin bring-
ing them together for the purpose
of beginning this important dia-
logue.
Dr. Newman has argued publicly
that Jews must welcome Minister
Farrakhan into their homes so that
they can discover for themselves
who heis. Dr. Newman, an outspo-
ken anti-Zionist who has been at-
tacked by the ADL as oa self-hating
Jew.? is now being denigrated by
Nat Hentoff, the liberal Jewish col-
umnist who writes for the Village
Voice, for making such overtures to
the leader of the Nation of Islam.
In the course of the dialogue the
Minister consistently distinguished

In 1964, Brother Malcolm Xgave
us a brilliant political analysis in
which he proposed a then oradical?
concept... Black representation in
the U.S. Congress proportional to
their numbers in population. Af-
ter 28 years, it looked like the
American body-politic had ap-
proached electoral parity when the
Congressional Black Caucus
swelled from 26 members to 40-39
of 435 members of the House (8.97
percent) and one of 100 members
in the Senate (one percent).
The 1990 census, with its re-
distribution of seats from the in-
dustrial mid-west and eastern
states in the North, to the Sunbelt
States of the South provided the
back-drop for this onew? Black
political power. And with the Bush
administration in power, enforc-
ing the provisions of the Voting
Rights Act, at least there would be
no hint of oliberal bias,? in the
resulting redistribution.
Indeed, as re-appointment took
shape, Republicans were gleeful
at the prospect of carving new
Black majority seats, because it
meant that the numbers of Black
(read liberal) voters in some Dis-
tricts occupied by White Demo-
crats would be decreased, making
it easier for Republicans to win the
seats. New majority Black Dis-
tricts were defined in Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana, North Caro-
lina and Texas.
The changes produced a 50 per-
cent increase in the ranks of the
CBC, and all of a sudden it looked
like Blacks would at least have [i
power and political respect on i
Capitol Hill. But,itappears,some [ig
Whites were unhappy (to say the [ig 4%
least) with the new Black power. . h
_ never mind that these new Con-
gress Members were brief-toting a
well educated Blacks with a total $
of more than 100 years of legisla-
tive and government service un-
der their belts before they were
sent to Congress, and not gun-
toting militants!
This week in North Carolina,
with other trials pending in the
other states, the most famous of
the challenged went totrial. There,
Reps. Eva ClaytonTs (D-NC) and
Mel WattTs (D-NC) 1st and 12th
