And yet because<lb />I am an American, raised in a<lb />society with a legacy of slavery,<lb />apartheid and the oone-drop?<lb />theory of Blackness, I was raised asa<lb />Black person and identify myself as Black.<lb /><lb />Color consciousness has left a<lb />lingering imprint on Black Ameri-<lb />can life. The young women<lb />whose boyfriend wouldnTt bring her<lb />home to meet his mother because<lb />she was otoo dark,? and the first<lb />Black mayor of a Southern city<lb />who had to overcome not only<lb />White segregation but color and<lb />class discrimination in the Black<lb />community as well. While these best<lb />friends acknowledged that each<lb />was treated differently in the Black<lb />community, they had never dis-<lb />cussed the reason for this differ-<lb />ence. Ironically, Keith and<lb /><lb />KeyonnTs experiences were analo-<lb />gous to the ways in which my 818-<lb /><lb />oter (and associate producer) Eve<lb /><lb />and were treated, something that<lb />own family was not immune<lb />issue of color and prefer-<lb /><lb />4 *<lb /><lb />people in Pitt County.<lb /><lb />The agencies selected range from<lb />those helping at-risk children to<lb />adults who are unemployed.<lb /><lb />The largest grant of $8,610 was<lb />awarded to Florence Crittenton<lb />Services (formerly Eastern North<lb />Carolina Maternity Home).
