          <lb />26<lb /><lb />A salute to<lb />Martin Luther King ot:<lb /><lb />E'M T VOICE<lb /><lb />EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA'S MINORITY VOICE - SINCE 1987<lb /><lb />WEEK ENDING JANUARY 14, 1994<lb /><lb />"Greenville Man Creates Drugo"<lb /><lb />By Lynnette Riddick<lb /><lb />Editor<lb /><lb />A fun and exciting board game<lb />called, Drugo is helping to equip<lb />our area youth with knowledge<lb />that can shape how they deal with<lb />the society in which they live.<lb />Drugo is the name of an innova-<lb />tive board game that is quickly<lb />gaining popularity in the Pitt<lb />county area. It is unique in that is<lb />informative as well as fun.<lb /><lb />Drugo, created by health educa-<lb />tor Wade Johnson, Jr. is played<lb />much like Bingo. It helps players<lb />to learn the facts about drugs and<lb />their harmful effects.<lb /><lb />Wade Johnson, Jr., alcohol and<lb />drug coordinator for Pitt County<lb />Schools, developed this game after<lb />acquiring the position as drug edu-<lb /><lb />cation consultant in 1979. Thecre-<lb />ation of this game was done to<lb />provide a fun and effective means<lb />for his students from grades 6-8 to<lb />learn about drugs.<lb /><lb />Johnson later formed, W.<lb />Johnson Enterprises, Inc., the<lb />manufacturer of Drugo. The com-<lb />pany consists of Johnson and his<lb />wife who work out of the home. As<lb />of yet, 4,000 games have already<lb />been sold. Johnson Ts goal, how-<lb />ever, is extends far beyond that.<lb />He hopes to sell as much as 100,000<lb />games.<lb /><lb /> oAlways create something to<lb />make difference in others lives and<lb />market it. My goal is to be an<lb />example " you can use your own<lb />mink to benefit others. The benefit<lb />is not in making money but to<lb /><lb />make a difference. There Ts a mis-<lb />sion greater than money. ?<lb /><lb />Many times parents have a hard<lb />time identifying with or even un-<lb />derstanding their children.<lb />Johnson discovered that Drugocan<lb />cut down the barriers between<lb />parents and children. This in turn<lb />helps the children to open up to<lb />their parents.<lb /><lb />Johnson added that after play-<lb />ing Drugo once, participants gain<lb />a 20% - 30% increase in knowledge<lb />base. As an additional benefit to<lb />his students, Johnson awards with<lb />comicbooks, pens, buttons, bumper<lb />stickers, posters, etc. oLearning<lb />should be fun, ? said Johnson.<lb /><lb />Johnson said we are to encour-<lb />age our youth to work for them-<lb />selves, they have capability to de-<lb /><lb />velop and market a product. And<lb />they must doit through education.<lb />This is the number 1 ticket for us.<lb />And, Whatever you do you must<lb />put God first.<lb /><lb />Johnson asks all businesses pur-<lb />chase several Drugo games and<lb />donate them to area families.<lb /><lb />to accomplish as much as Wade<lb />Johnson Jr., requires lots of deter-<lb />mination, persistence, patience<lb />and just plain hard work. For those<lb />of you who have a vision or a goal<lb />to reach that would positively ef-<lb />fect your world I encourage you to<lb /> oNever go back...<lb />even ifit Ts gradual, ? said Johnson.<lb />Those who run in a race can Tt look<lb />back or else they will get offcourse.<lb />So, keep your eyes on the finish<lb />line!<lb /><lb />1993 in review: A year in Black and White<lb /><lb />By Vinette K. Pryce<lb />Special to the AM News<lb /><lb />This time last year the nation<lb />looked to Washington where a re-<lb />gime headed by a Democrat read-<lb />ied in transition for a more opti-<lb />mistic tenure.<lb /><lb />New Yorkers who helped elect<lb />President Bill Clinton focused on<lb />the inauguration rather than the<lb />Somali war which is still claiming<lb />victims.<lb /><lb />With a new mayor entering<lb />Gracie Mansion, Black New York-<lb />ers are not quite as happy or opti-<lb />misticabout the Republican prom-<lb />ising to carry a big stick some<lb />believe aimed directly at the Black<lb />community.<lb /><lb />But while 1994 rapidly advances,<lb />1993 looms large as the year which<lb />began when Christopher Wilson,<lb />a Brooklyn-based Jamican immi-<lb />grant, was kidnapped from his car,<lb />taken to a remote area in Tampa,<lb />Fla., and doused with gasoline and<lb />fire, The story made national news.<lb />For that same Brooklyn commu-<lb />nity, Nick Perry was installed as a<lb />member of the New York State<lb />Assembly.<lb /><lb />By March, Rev. Alfred Sharpton<lb />was jailed. Along with Charles<lb />Barron, the pair was hauled off to<lb />Rikers Island but had to be moved<lb />to Brooklyn where authorities<lb />claimed it would be ideal for less<lb />~ interaction with other inmates. For<lb />- days, protesters honked car horns<lb />- demanding release of the activist.<lb /><lb />Prof. Leonard Jeffries took the:<lb /><lb />hotseat in April, But it was the<lb />- incompetence of city University<lb />administrators, and politicians,<lb />including former Mayor Ed Koch,<lb />which glared brightly inside the<lb />Manhattan courtroom New York-<lb />ers will remember .<lb /><lb />The Essence Awards lauded<lb />women in April. During a paid<lb />tribute at the Paramount Theater,<lb />the women Ts sh a hosted a<lb />televised program which is becom-<lb />ing ahighlight foreach succeeding<lb /><lb />year. ia<lb /><lb />On May 11, Jeffries heard the<lb />' verdict. A vie ihe estivist,<lb />: SE ewes come<lb /><lb />bundle.<lb /><lb />It was June when Rev. Calvin<lb />Butts decided to crush obscene rap<lb />music, Like Min. Louis Farrakhan<lb />in December, Rev. Butts wanted<lb />to know what happened to names<lb />like the Supremes. They've been<lb />replaced by Bitches With Prob-<lb />lems, Ho Ts With Attitudes and<lb />Niggas With Attitudes.<lb /><lb />Ike and Tina Turner exposed<lb />themselves during this wedding<lb />popular month. Tina Ts movie won<lb />her new respect by asking oWhats<lb />Love Got To Do With It? ? Ike called<lb />a press conference tosay heslapped<lb />his former wife and partner a few<lb />times but nothing like she<lb />protrayed in her movie.<lb /><lb />The Crown Heights report beat<lb />the August anniversary when more<lb />Blacks were arrested for walking<lb />through their own neighborhoods<lb />that at any other time.<lb /><lb />The Cirgenti report started a<lb />declinein popularity for there city Ts<lb />first Black mayor.<lb /><lb />August was hotter than July for<lb />basketball hero Michael Jordan.<lb />The NBA conducted two probes on<lb />the star Ts gambling practices and<lb />was beginning to release informa-<lb />tion which tarnished his name. A<lb />brutal murder of his father and<lb /><lb />continued pressure from the me- ,<lb /><lb />dia resulted in an early retire-<lb />ment. Jordan seems content that<lb />he quit at the top.<lb /><lb />September showed David N.<lb />Dinkins was truly the Democratic<lb />candidate of choice. This was also<lb />the month Wilson say his racist<lb />attackers face to face. The 32 year-<lb />old stockbroker from Brooklyn was<lb />well enough to relish the fact that<lb />two of the men received life sen-<lb />tences for there heinous crime.<lb /><lb />History will record the month<lb />when Yitzhak Rabin and Yassir<lb /><lb />Arafat shook hands in front of the<lb /><lb />world during a peace agreement<lb />witnessed by President Bill<lb />Clinton.Whoopi Goldberg made<lb />Halloween of Black arts. She also<lb />struck and uglier blow for Black<lb />women when she helped script<lb /><lb />rin ok monologue for her<lb />Phe Toni<lb /><lb />Morrison certainly did Black<lb />women proud when she became<lb />the first Black woman to receive<lb />the Novel Prize of Literature.<lb /><lb />White Catholics decided a Black<lb />mayor should serve one term had<lb />them move out and while reports<lb />are that crime is down and the city<lb />was on an upswing, Mayor David<lb />Dinkins was told to leave by two<lb />percent of New Yorkers. It was a<lb />sad night at the Sheraton Hotel<lb />but a proud one because Mayor<lb />Dinkins took his licks with grace.<lb />Can Tt recall that happening in a<lb />long, long time.<lb /><lb />At a time when Blacks and<lb />Whites give thanks for blessing,<lb />the world Ts biggest star who says<lb /> ojt doesn Tt matter if you're Black or<lb />White ? found out it does.<lb /><lb />After four months on the read<lb />with his oDangerous ? tour, her was<lb />forced off. Michael Jackson said<lb />her was addicted to pain killers.<lb />But her was also being tried and<lb />convicted by the American media<lb />which has been flooding newspa-<lb />pers with accounts of liaisons he<lb />reportedly hosted with youngsters.<lb />While they still have not found<lb />nay criminal facts, the stories con-<lb />tinue.<lb /><lb />Depression is high in December<lb />and a prime case is brutally re-<lb />vealed in the person of Colin<lb />Ferguson, and immigrant from<lb />Jamaica. Six people suffered his<lb />wrath. And for his actions he<lb />blames Blacks and Whites in the<lb />society whom he believed failed<lb />him. The Black community lost<lb />Thurgood Marshall. Jan. 24,<lb />Arthur Ashe, Feb. 7, Billy Eckstein<lb />in March, Marian Anderson in<lb />April, and many more to crime<lb />rather than natural causes.<lb /><lb />David Koresh, a religious zealot<lb />who lured many people to Waco,<lb />Texas, perished in a fire which<lb />consumed 86 believers at the<lb />Branch Davidian compound. Af-<lb />ter 51 days of federal agents trying<lb />to extricate the cult, they were<lb />tear-gassed and later overcome by<lb />flames.<lb /><lb />California will not forget the<lb />name Stacy Koon, a sergeant<lb /><lb />fi Basia sed pest sitios, om<lb /><lb />whose name is forever associated<lb />with a motorist named Rodney<lb />King. In Black and White the<lb />names are indelible. Koon was con-<lb />victed of violating King Ts civil<lb />rights. Laurence Powr , another<lb />cop who beat, cursed and deni-<lb />grated the Black man, was also<lb />convicted.<lb /><lb />move forward *<lb /><lb />Mr. Wade Johnson Jr. is known for teaching our young people<lb />about drugs. Mr. Johnson has vow invented a game oDrugo. ?<lb />Drugo is to teach our parents and children about drugs. It is<lb />now time to help support Mr. Johnson for what he stands for.<lb />Fighting the war of drugs.<lb /><lb />Local forum to focus on<lb />fair housing laws<lb /><lb />North Carolina law. prohibits<lb />discrimination in most housing on<lb />the basis of race, color, religion,<lb />sex, national origin, handicap or<lb />family status. A public forum is<lb />planned in Greenville to educate<lb />citizens about the fair housing law<lb />and to inform them on complaint<lb />and processing procedures.<lb /><lb />The forum, sponsored by theN.C.<lb />Human Relations Commission and<lb />the Greenville Human Relations<lb />Commission, is set for Tuesday,<lb />January 25, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30<lb />p.m. in the West Greenville Recre-<lb /><lb />ation-Faethity.<lb /><lb />The N.C. Human Relations Com-<lb />mission is responsible for enforc-<lb />ing the state fair housing law. By<lb />mandate of the N.C. General As-<lb />sembly and with oversight of the<lb />U.S. Department of Housing and<lb />Urban Development, the commis-<lb />sion has the ability to investigate,<lb />conciliate and litigate cases and<lb />complaints about fair housing on<lb />behalf of the citizens of North Caro-<lb />lina.<lb /><lb />The 10-year-old State Fair Hous-<lb />ing Act applies to private<lb /><lb />hemeowners as well as to real es-<lb />tate agents and others in the real<lb />estate business, according to Wil-<lb />liam J. Barber II, executive direc-<lb />tor of the N.C. Human Relations<lb />Commission.<lb /><lb />The Greenville public forum is<lb />one in a series planned through-<lb />out the state.<lb /><lb />For more information, contact<lb />Evelyn Cohens at (919) 830-4497<lb />or Quessie Peterson with the Hu-<lb />man Relations Commission at<lb />(919) 733-7996.<lb /><lb />PCMH campaigns to prevent<lb />shaken babies<lb /><lb />In response to increasing num-<lb />bers of babies diagnosed at Pitt<lb />County Memorial Hospital with<lb />serious injuries resulting from<lb />their beingshaken, PCMH Ts Child<lb />Protection Team has launched a<lb />campaign to remind people of the<lb />potential harm that results from<lb />shaking a baby.<lb /><lb /> oUntil a child is about two years<lb />old, his brain floats in a propor-<lb />tionately larger space of cerebral<lb />fluid than an adult Ts brain, ? said<lb />Jennifer Smith, pediatric social<lb />worker at PCMH. oThis means that<lb /><lb />| vigorous shaking of the child or<lb />; throwing him into the air produces<lb />| a whiplash-type to the brain. ?<lb /><lb />Smith said shaking bangs the<lb /><lb />| child Ts brain repeatedly against<lb />_ their skull, leading to permanent<lb />| brain damage or even death. To avoid hormone-<lb />tainted milk after February 3rd,<lb />consumers must seek out milk and<lb />dairy products that are labeled as<lb />free of rBGH.<lb /><lb />Recently Consumers Union, the<lb />nation Ts most respected consumer<lb />watchdog and publisher of Con-<lb />sumer Reports magazine, blasted<lb />the FDA Ts approval of rBGH, say-<lb />ing it is unsafe for human health.<lb />The group also found that the milk<lb />from rBGH could have higher lev-<lb />els of a human growth factor, IGF-<lb />1, which is a suspected carcino-<lb /><lb />gen.<lb /><lb />The rBGH drug is the first bil-<lb />lion-dollar product of food genetic<lb />engineering, Monsanton chemical<lb />company reduces rBGH under the<lb />name of oPosilac ?. Along<lb />with its impacts on human health<lb />the genetically engineered hor-<lb />moneis also bad for the farmer the<lb />taxpayer and the diary cow. Stud-<lb />ies indicate that the over-produc-<lb />tion of milk caused by rBGH will<lb />force up to 30 percent of American<lb />dairy farmers out of business by<lb />1997. Moreover the use of rBGH to<lb />create an even greater milk sur-<lb />plus will cost the American tax-<lb />payers additional billions of dol-<lb />lars in price supports.<lb /><lb />rBGH will also cause massive<lb />animal suffering. Cows injected<lb />with rBGH suffer from increased<lb />udder infections (mastitis). <p>a<lb />fis<lb /><lb />He ih rye pas New York,<lb />ve fied a civil rights complaint<lb />in the Federal District court charg-<lb />ing Gov. Mario Cuomo and State<lb />Parole Board officials with racial<lb />discrimination in their practices<lb />of granting clemency and parole.<lb /><lb />The class action lawsuit alleges<lb />that White prisoners are system-<lb />atically treated more favorably<lb />when they apply for clemency and<lb />parole than are Blacks and Latinos<lb />who apply.<lb /><lb />The plaintiffs further allege that<lb />the defendants systematically<lb />mete out harsher treatment to<lb />prisoners whose convictions in-<lb />volve police officers named as vic-<lb />tims, and also to those prisoners<lb />whose convictions entail opoliti-<lb />cal ? implications.<lb /><lb />The problem with these prac-<lb />tices, the complaint, is that<lb />this oSpecial ? category is illegal,<lb />as itis not supported by legislative<lb />mandate or statute.<lb /><lb />This lawsuit is the spin-off of<lb />recent reports and other lawsuits<lb />that have documented racism in<lb />the New York State criminal jus-<lb />tice system.<lb /><lb />After the studies were in, the<lb />N.Y.S. Coalition for Criminal Jus-<lb />tice concluded, oCriminal justice<lb />in the New York State is the story<lb />of two nations: one White, theother<lb />Black. One resembles the Euro-<lb />pean justice system which incar-<lb />cerates at relatively low rates, the<lb />other exceeding South Africa in its<lb />rate of Black imprisonment. ?<lb /><lb />The complaint brings this issue<lb />to the forefront with respect to the<lb />release policy. For instance, in a<lb />recent case decided by the State<lb /><lb />Appellate Division, oKing vs. Pa-<lb />role Board, ? the court unanimously<lb />ruled that the Parole Board had<lb />twice unreasonably denied parole<lb />to a Black prisoner who had made<lb />outstanding achievements during<lb />his 23 years of confinement.<lb /><lb />The court declared that oit is<lb />difficult to imagine a case that<lb />cries out for parole lauder than<lb />this one/ ? The Appellate panel ac-<lb />knowledged that denials of this<lb />sort were acommon practice of the<lb />Parole Board.<lb /><lb />The prisoners not, interestingly,<lb />that the most zealous proponents<lb />of the harsh policy directed at mi-<lb />norities are the same Parole Board<lb />members who were recently ex-<lb />posed for attempting to released<lb /><lb />salute<lb />Dr.<lb />Martin<lb />Luther<lb />King, Jr.<lb /><lb />1929-1968<lb /><lb />one of the White Howard Beach<lb />defendants two years before he<lb />had even served his minimum term<lb />imposed by the court; thus making<lb />him ineligible for consideration.<lb /><lb />Then, when this shenanigan was<lb />revealed, the Parole Board hur-<lb />riedly claimed that it was all a<lb />mistake and rescinded the parole.<lb />The plaintiffs in the lawsuit note<lb />that Z Tmistakes T like this are not<lb />likely to happen unless the pris-<lb />oner is White.<lb /><lb />The prisoners T basic contentions<lb />that it is one thing for politicians<lb />and the public to demand a strict<lb /><lb />criminal justice system to enforce<lb />the laws and wage war on crime; it<lb />is totally another thing to tolerate<lb />an apartheid system of justice<lb />where Black and Latinolawbreak-<lb />ers are are treated more harshly<lb /><lb />Af i<lb />45%4s<lb /><lb />! <lb />10-THE oM"-VOICE-WEEK ENDING JANUARY 14, 1994<lb /><lb />Should we legalize drugs?<lb /><lb />The reaction to Surgeon Gen-<lb />eral Joycelyn Elders T suggestion<lb />to study the legalization of illicit<lb />drugs was quick, pointed and<lb />mostly negative. The White House<lb />repudiated Elders T suggestion, and<lb />a few Republicans urged Presi-<lb />dent Clinton to either discipline or<lb />dismiss her. There was, however,<lb />applause form Baltimore Mayor<lb /><lb />Kurt Schmoke, and Eric Sterling,<lb />President of the Washington, D.C.<lb />based Criminal Justice Policy<lb />Foundation.<lb /><lb />Schmoke, who first urged de-<lb />criminalization of illegal drugs<lb />in 1988, said that the nation Ts cur-<lb />rent anti-drug efforts will not pre-<lb />vail ounless we take the profit out<lb />of the distribution ? of illicit drugs.<lb /><lb />Eric Sterling said that oour drug<lb />strategy goal should be to take the<lb />management of the business away<lb />from mobsters, and turn it over to<lb />consumers and law-abiding busi-<lb />ness people subject to appropriate<lb />regulations. ? Sterling believes that<lb />placing illegal drugs under the law<lb />via government regulations and<lb />taxation would oeliminate most of<lb /><lb /> " " " ~~<lb /><lb />the violence that is in the com-<lb />merce.: He noted that illegal drug<lb />market conflicts are settled vio-<lb />lently because disputes over such<lb />matters a product quality andsales<lb />territory cannot " because they<lb />are illegal "be resolved in court,<lb />as is the case with other goods<lb />which are licensed and regulated<lb />by the government. According to<lb /><lb />Schmoke, within the past six years<lb />homicides in Baltimore have in-<lb />creased by over 30 percent with<lb /> omore than 45 percent of those<lb />homicides related to drugs. ?<lb />Sterling stressed that studying<lb />the possibility of een drugs<lb />is a omatter of shining the light of<lb />reality on our current policy, ? not<lb />an effort to increase the number of<lb />drug users. He said the message<lb /><lb />must continue to be sent from the<lb />public health community othat<lb />drug use is harmful. ? Sterling<lb /><lb />urges a public health approach<lb />toward all drugs and drug users<lb />and asserts that honest compre-<lb />hensive prevention programs<lb />work. oCigarettes are as addictive<lb />as heroin or cocaine,: he said. oYet<lb />twenty-five million cigarettes ad-<lb />dicts have quitin the last 25 years.<lb />This public health campaign suc-<lb />ceeded withoutjailingor urine test-<lb />ing cigarette smokers, and despite<lb />billions of dollars of tobacco pro-<lb />motion annually. ?<lb /><lb />REALIZING<lb />THE<lb />DREAM<lb /><lb />AS A NATION WE'VE COME A LONG WAY IN<lb />RECOGNIZING THE DIGNITY AND CIVIL RIGHTS<lb />OF EACH AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL.
