REID<lb /><lb />There was a time when a North<lb />Carolina driver Ts license cost 25<lb />cents. Few people alive today can<lb />remember this interesting eco-<lb />nomic fact. But George F. Garrett<lb />can. And he remembers when cars<lb />were slower and lifestyles were<lb /><lb />| different. But other than that,<lb />things haven't changed much.<lb /><lb />Throughout his 85 years of liv-<lb /><lb />ing, Garrett has been T involved<lb />| with sports, religion, civil. rights,<lb /><lb />but nothing holds a candle to the<lb />love and pride he has for his wife<lb />and two daughters. Garrett has<lb />been married to his wife Mamie<lb />for 64 years, and spends a good<lb /><lb />= deal of his time with her. They<lb /><lb />lived next door to each other when<lb />they were kids, and developed a<lb />strong bond that would later lead<lb />to a special relationship "married.<lb /><lb />Garrett is very proud of the ac-<lb />complishments of his two daugh-<lb />ters, Ann Robinson and Mamie<lb />Harvey. Both have retained the<lb />strong values that they learned as<lb /><lb />children and have passed them on<lb />to their own children.<lb /><lb />Garrett Ts oldest daughter, Ma-<lb />mie, is an assistant principal in<lb />the Brooklyn School System. She<lb />is married and has a daughter,<lb />who works in real estate.<lb /><lb />His youngest daughter, Ann, is<lb />the national president of Psi Beta<lb />Fraternity, and lives in Connecti-<lb />cut with her husband. They have a<lb />daughter, who is a lawyer, and a<lb />son, who is attending Amherst<lb />College in Massachusetts.<lb /><lb />Garrett attributes much of his<lb />and his wife Ts success in raising<lb />two fine children to practicing<lb />what they preached.  oYou have to<lb />be a role model, ? he explains.<lb /> oDon Tt think that your children<lb />aren Tt watching you, because they<lb />are. ?<lb /><lb />Today, Garrett tries to be a role<lb />model for other children, especially<lb />to the kids who spend their days<lb />and nights on the streets.  oWhen I<lb />see these girls and boys who are<lb />on drugs, ? he says,  oI go to them<lb />and get them to talk about them-<lb /><lb />selves. A lot of parents are afraid<lb />to talk to their kids.<lb /><lb /> oPeople tell me,  ~Mr. Garrett,<lb />you don Tt understand, T ? he adds.<lb /> oThey say that times are different<lb />now. But they're not. It Ts just as<lb />modern today as it was 50 to 60<lb />years ago. Kids smoked back then,<lb />too. And they got into trouble. I<lb />was tempted many times to do the<lb />same things, but I learned an im-<lb />portant thing "that I could be<lb />with the group and not be a part of<lb />it. ?<lb /><lb />Garrett also spends part of his<lb />time reflecting on many of the<lb />events of his life.<lb /><lb />An avid baseball fan for many<lb />years, Garrett played ball with<lb />most of the National League<lb />Greenville All-Stars back in the<lb /><lb />days of the Negro Leagues. He<lb /><lb />talks about times when Jackie<lb />Robinson and Josh Gibson came to<lb />Greenville to play against such lo-<lb />cal players as Milton Bynum and<lb />Zeno Price.<lb /><lb />Later, Garrett organized a little<lb />league that was headquartered at<lb />what is now the South Greenville<lb />Recreation Center. He did it be-<lb />cause he, along with many others,<lb />jm bothered by the fact that,<lb /><lb />three gf<lb />torn each summer in the Tar<lb />River. Garrett felt that if the boys<lb />had some way to channel their en-<lb />ergy, it would keep them away<lb />from the river.<lb /><lb />It worked. And during the first<lb />year of the league, no black boys<lb />drowned in the Tar River.  oIn<lb />fact, ? Garrett says,  othat year the<lb />Daily Reflector ran an article say-<lb /><lb />. four Negro boys would.<lb /><lb />ing that no one could remember a<lb />summer when a Negro boy didn Tt<lb />drown in the river. ?<lb /><lb />Many people still remember how<lb />George Garrett persuaded down-<lb />town merchants to sponsor  oTag<lb />Day ? sales to help pay for the<lb />Little League uniforms in the<lb />early 1950s. These ball teams pro-<lb />vided wholesome recreational out-<lb />lets for many boys, some of whom<lb />learned discipline and principles of<lb />fair play that have enhanced their<lb />personal lives and their profes-<lb />sions.<lb /><lb />Three black doctors came from<lb />the league: Freddie Staton, Wiley<lb />Hines and Isaac Artis.<lb /><lb />For 41 years, Garrett worked as<lb />a printer after learning the trade<lb />through self-study and apprentice-<lb />ships. He recalls that he got his<lb />first job printing in 1926, the year<lb />that he married. He joined York<lb />Memorial Church in the 1930s<lb />when it was located at First and<lb />Reade streets. He attended Mor-<lb />gan State College and worked on<lb />the now-famous Afro-American<lb />Journal.<lb /><lb />A vigorous civil rights propo-<lb />nent, Garrett was strongly in-:<lb />spired by the early protests in the<lb />deep South, and wanted to bring<lb /><lb />the focus of Garrett's attention be-<lb />cause they were located in the<lb />black community but, at the time,<lb />all of their cashiers were white.<lb />Garrett and other SCLC advocates<lb /><lb />(See GARRETT, P. 2)<lb /><lb />This Way for Black Empowerment<lb /><lb />TAKING INDEPENDENT<lb /><lb />POLITICS LOCAL<lb /><lb />In accepting the presidential<lb />nomination of the New Alliance<lb />Party at our convention last<lb />month, I put out the call to take<lb />what we have accomplished at the<lb />national and international level<lb />and invest it at the local level.<lb />Why? Because in this extraordi-<lb />nary political year, it has become<lb />clear that independent politics is<lb /><lb />. on the agenda in this country. The<lb /><lb />black-led independent movement<lb /><lb />| *has to have a very strong voice in<lb /><lb /> ~defining that agenda.<lb /><lb /> ~In New York City, where NAP<lb />came onto the political scene<lb />ck in 1979, a multiracial<lb />epple Ts slate of candidates run-<lb /><lb /> ~in the Democratic Primary<lb />and as independents are setting<lb />an example for the rest of the<lb /><lb />5 pudina to follow.<lb /><lb />I am eager to introduce some of<lb />these exemplary candidates, and<lb />their campaigns, to you. If not for<lb /><lb />\, them, in many districts the incum-<lb /><lb />bent (or the Democratic Party Ts<lb />handpicked choice) would have<lb />gone unchallenged because there<lb />is virtually no political dialogue<lb />going on within the party. And in<lb /><lb />most cages there is no serious Re-<lb /><lb />publican o on in the general<lb /><lb />election.  ~ independent candi-<lb /><lb />dacies are putting democracy to<lb /><lb />work, I hope they give you some<lb />a al<lb /><lb />Batre tae is an interna-<lb /><lb />tor who<lb /><lb />State As-<lb /><lb />Zionist mafia Ts machinations in<lb />closing down a popular concert se-<lb />ries on the Hudson River which<lb />generated many thousands of dol-<lb />lars for educational and recrea-<lb />tional programs serving black<lb />youth "because a book containing<lb />an interview with Minister Louis<lb />Farrakhan was being sold at the<lb />carnival on the pier where the con-<lb />cert boats docked. But Barbara<lb />Taylor can fight for the commu-<lb />nity, because she is independent.<lb />Dr. Rafael Mendez, a Puerto Ri-<lb />can leader of the New Alliance<lb />Party, is running for Congress in a<lb />new district that was created this<lb />year for the purpose of giving New<lb />York Ts underrepresented Latino<lb />population a voice. My name is Danny Worley and | own a small<lb />electrical contracting business. | am a Conservative Businessman who loves<lb />people.<lb /><lb />My opponent is 14-year incumbent Joe Mavretic. As some of you know, Mr.<lb />Mavretic exhausted every possible avenue in a bid to be Governor rather than<lb /><lb />- your Representative. After deciding not to run on the Democratic ticket against<lb /><lb />Jim Hunt (most likely for fear of being out of poljtics entirely if he had lost), he<lb />decided to try for the Governorship as an Independent. After failing to gather<lb />enough signatures to run as an Independent, he complained that the law was too<lb />difficult to get enough signatures to get on the ballot. For 14 years, this was<lb />never a problem, until it didn't fit his personal political agenda. After that fell<lb />through, he even approached the Libertarian party about being their candidate<lb />for Governor.<lb /><lb />Is this the type of representation we want? All Mr. Mavretic cares about is-<lb />his w far he can go, not how far the beuple of the 71st<lb />District can_go.<lb /><lb />| sincerely need your vote on November 3rd to make a change in Raleigh. |<lb />pledge to you that | will keep you informed on what is going on behind closed<lb />doors.           <lb />TWO SAVED YOUTHS WILL<lb /><lb />COME BACK TO SAVE US<lb /><lb />In mid-April, I wrote a column<lb />asking for support for Karesha<lb />Lowe, a 14-year-old math genius<lb />in Philadelphia. She and her 13-<lb />year-old brother, Chris, are alone<lb />because of the death of her father<lb />and the incarceration of their<lb />mother.<lb /><lb />I appealed for donations to es-<lb />tablish a fund for their education<lb />and maintenance.<lb /><lb />The basis of my appeal was an<lb />article by Kimberly K. McLarin in<lb />the Philadelphia Inquirer. In  oA<lb />Child Shines Amid the Shambles, ?<lb />McLarin wrote,  oKaresha Lowe is<lb />14, and fatherless and poor, with a<lb />mother serving life, a half-sister as<lb />a reluctant guardian, crowded<lb />house, an angry brother and an in-<lb />tellect so hungry she thinks alge-<lb />bra is fun. ?<lb /><lb /> oMother Jailed, Money Short,<lb />Yet Grades Excel ? was the story's<lb />sub-had just above the sentence<lb />that tore me apart psychologically:<lb /> oKaresha Lowe is a rose growing<lb />through rubble, one that will un-<lb />fold or be trampled underfoot. ?<lb /><lb />On May 18, almost a month<lb />later to the day, I held a press con-<lb />ference at the University City Sci-<lb />ence Center (which donated its fa-<lb /><lb />2 .<lb />Tony Brown's Comments |<lb />YS<lb /><lb />cility after a black religious group<lb />demanded payment for its space),<lb />at which Dr. Isaac B. Horton, III<lb />awarded a full $50,000 scholarship<lb />to the College of Wooster for<lb />Karesha.<lb /><lb />The scholarship was awarded on<lb />behalf of the Delaware Valley<lb />chapter of the National Organiza-<lb />tion for the Professional Advance-<lb />ment of Black Chemical Engineers<lb />in conjunction with the College of<lb />Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.<lb /><lb />Responding to my plea for<lb />money to maintain these two<lb />young people with the normal<lb />things of life "clothes, books, food,<lb />living quarters "until they get to<lb />college, the following angels of<lb />mercy sent money:<lb /><lb />Dr. Jean Gilbert (New York and<lb />West Virginia); Tena Hines (New<lb />Orleans), William Mays (Indian-<lb />apolis), Jolanda and Robert Scott<lb />(Clawson), and the Pepsi-Cola<lb />Black Employees Association Fred<lb />Canady, president) joined me in<lb /><lb />@NATIONALLY SYNDICATED COLUMNe<lb /><lb />ITF Chris Lowe and Karesha<lb />Lowe. Send it to me at 1501<lb />Broadway, Suite 412, New York,<lb />N.Y. 10036 or call (212) 575-0876.<lb /><lb />The funds are administered by<lb />two of Karesha Ts teachers at Vaux<lb />Middle School, Lynn Johnson and<lb />Florence Johnson. Karesha and<lb />Chris just settled in school for the<lb />fall and after the necessary expen-<lb />ditures, there is $4,045 left in the<lb />bank account.<lb /><lb /> oA sincere thanks for all of the<lb />donations. Without the money, the<lb />children would be up a tree, so to<lb />speak, ? the Johnsons wrote.<lb /><lb />But aside from the $60,000<lb />scholarship and the $6,025 dona-<lb />tions, an invaluable present was<lb />made by the Muncie State Prison<lb />officials who allowed Karesha Ts<lb />mother, Cheryl Casper, to attend<lb />the press conference.<lb /><lb />Those who donated would have<lb />had tangible proof of their giving<lb />had they seen the tears of joy and<lb />pride burst loose from these mem-<lb /><lb />donating $1,000 each. Paula bers of a broken family.<lb /><lb />Wright Coleman of Ft. Washing-<lb />ton, Md. also made a donation.<lb /><lb />As of this date, $6,025 has been<lb />deposited in the only black-owned<lb />bank in Pennsylvania, United<lb />Bank. If you want to make a dona-<lb />tion, you can make checks out to:<lb /><lb />Thanking all of us for doing for<lb />her children what she is unable to<lb />do, Casper said,  oThey will learn<lb />and grow as long as people believe<lb />in them and they have faith in<lb />God. ?<lb /><lb />Karesha wrote afterwards of<lb /><lb />752-4156<lb /><lb />CORNERSTONE TS ALL MALE<lb /><lb />ENRICHMENT RESOURCE ALTERNATIVE<lb />BEGAN IT'S THIRD YEAR<lb />SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1992<lb /><lb />REGISTER YOUR SON NOW!<lb /><lb />CORNERSTONE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH<lb />GREENVILLE. Sports are an<lb />important incentive for many<lb />students whose interest in<lb />education would otherwise be very<lb />low. This alarming news from<lb />Mlinois should remind us that it is<lb />important to support athletic<lb />programs in our schools. If the<lb /><lb />ace<lb /><lb />A<lb />*4.99<lb /><lb />Chicago story signals a trend, the<lb />nation may be faced with similar<lb />proposals in other cities. Many<lb />students earn scholarships for<lb />college through their achievements<lb />in sports during high school. The<lb />loss of this support would be<lb />devastating to countless families if<lb />this idea catches on nationwide.<lb /><lb />I hope that school officials will<lb />develop long-range strategic plans<lb />that will protect the future of<lb />athletic programs in Pitt County.<lb /><lb />George F.         <p>Ls<lb /><lb />Job Service Offers Employm Tt Tips<lb /><lb />*New tax filing system in<lb />place. Businesses with more than<lb />250 employees are now required to<lb />file their unemployment insurance<lb />tax reports on computer disk or<lb />tape. This new requirement take<lb />effect with the report due the end<lb />of this month. The new policy will<lb />help make the Employment Secu-<lb />rity Commission more efficient,<lb />save money, and help cut down on<lb />mistakes. Roughly six percent of<lb />all employers currently file on<lb />computer disk or tape, accounting<lb />for approximately a third of all<lb />wages reported to ESC. Contact<lb />Preston Johnson, director,<lb />ESC Unemployment Insurance<lb />Division, (919) 733-3121.<lb /><lb />eEmployment trends for the<lb />future. Do you know what Ts the<lb />fastest-growing occupation be-<lb />tween now and the year 2000?<lb />What industries will lose jobs, and<lb />which ones will grow? News you<lb />can use about population and em-<lb />ployment trends is available from<lb />ESC. A publication called  oNorth<lb />Carolina Employment Trends<lb />1990-2000 ? provides useful back-<lb />ground. ESC can provide a copy at<lb />no charge. Contact ESC Public<lb />scrawny chops were left on the<lb />table.<lb /><lb />This is a shame, because Fair-<lb />cloth is a better fellow, and a fun-<lb />nier fellow, than the one who<lb />showed up tight of jaw and clumsy<lb />of tongue to face Sanford last<lb />weekend. The Clinton farmer-busi-<lb />nessman must be eternally re-<lb />lieved that this was the only<lb />scheduled debate of their Senate<lb />campaign.<lb /><lb />Several conclusions are plain<lb />from watching the debate, and<lb />from observing the way both men<lb />have conducted their campaigns.<lb />First, Sanford may be 75, but he Ts<lb />a sharp-minded and vigorous po-<lb />litical veteran who has overcome<lb />troubles in his early days in the<lb />Senate, when he stumbled a bit.<lb />He demonstrated a keen knowl-<lb />edge of the ins and outs of the Sen-<lb />ate, and of the needs of the people<lb />of North Carolina.<lb /><lb />This has been Sanford Ts<lb />strength throughout his political<lb />career "he can connect with the<lb />people. He has an innate sense of<lb />what concerns them, where they<lb />stand, what they need.<lb /><lb />Second, Faircloth just seems to<lb />be running because of a grudge<lb />that is starting to wear off. He<lb />blames Sanford for denying him a<lb />chance at the Senate in 1986, and<lb /><lb />'<lb /><lb />)<lb /><lb />that was part of his motivation for<lb />switching from Democrat to Re-<lb />publican and getting in this race.<lb />The problem is, Faircloth Ts heart<lb />just doesn Tt seem to be in it. He<lb />doesn Tt act like a man who really<lb />has a burning desire to be in the<lb />U.S. Senate "and he certainly<lb />isn Tt up to the issues, even excus-<lb />ing his stumbles on the figures.<lb /><lb />Finally, while Sanford has a<lb />well-defined record as a progres-<lb />sive governor and longtime na-<lb />tional Democratic Party figure,<lb />Faircloth doesn Tt seem to stand for<lb />much. The Congressional Club has<lb />tried to tear him down and start<lb />over, transplanting their views to<lb />him. But he Ts clearly uncomfort-<lb />able "which is why he has been<lb />practically invisible in his cam-<lb />paign, except for television com-<lb />mercials.<lb /><lb />One suspects that in his heart of<lb />hearts, Lauch Faircloth may be<lb />wishing he Td never tossed his cap<lb />in the ring, or even gone near it.<lb />To be an effective candidate, and<lb />an effective senator, you have to<lb />wait to greet the people face to<lb />face and hear their views and give<lb />them yours. Faircloth gives signs<lb />he Td rather be back on the farm.<lb /><lb />GENERAL AUTO SERVICE<lb /><lb />JAY TRIPP'S<lb />TIRE SERVICE<lb /><lb /> oMICHELIN - BE GOODRICH - FIRESTONE - GOODYEAR - KELLY<lb /><lb />TIRES<lb /><lb />310 E.
