Today,<lb />he Ts a lawyer in a North Carolina<lb /><lb />Once a janitor at Williamston<lb />High School, now a licensed attor-<lb />ney and recently sworn-in assistant<lb />appellate defender in Raleigh,<lb />Towns climbed the ladder of success<lb />virtually by himself.<lb /><lb />Towns, a 1976 graduate of Wil-<lb />liamston High School, received his<lb />undergraduate diploma from North<lb />Carolina Central University in May<lb />1980, graduating summa cum laude<lb />anid among the top in his class with<lb />a bachelor Ts degree in public ad-<lb />ministration.<lb /><lb />He then accepted a scholarship to<lb />Boston Ts Northeastern University<lb />School of Law, graduating in May<lb />1983.<lb /><lb />According to former WHS Princi-<lb />pal Ed Farnell, Towns dropped out<lb />of school in 1973 at<lb />a Williamston.<lb />support his family.<lb /><lb />Bear Grass High School Principal<lb />pigs oDink ? First he was given a three-<lb />day-a-week job to help move WHS to<lb />its then new facility, and clean up<lb />the old gym.<lb /><lb />More help came in July 1974<lb />when Farnell hired Towns as a jani-<lb />tor at the school. But two days before<lb />school started, Towns approached<lb />Farnell and told the principal he<lb />wanted to return to school but<lb />needed to keep his job.<lb /><lb />Farnell and Towns worked out a<lb />schedule for the student-janitor.<lb />Throughout. the 1974-75 and<lb />:1975-76 academic years plus the<lb />summers of 1975 and 1976, Towns<lb />worked as a janitor from 6:30.a.m. to<lb />8:30 a.m., attended school from 8:30<lb />a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and then contin-<lb />ued janitorial work until 9:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />Farnell said, oLeland gave up<lb />everything to go to school, ? includ-<lb />ing his car. He recalled Towns re-<lb />ceived his high school diploma in<lb />August 1976, after receiving mostly<lb />A Ts and overy few B Ts. ?<lb /><lb /> oAs far as I know, Leland has<lb /><lb />(See LELAND TOWNS, P. 10)<lb /><lb />\ Pitt County Candidate<lb /><lb /> ~Commissioner D. D. Garrett Seeks Re-Election<lb /><lb />Pitt County Commissioner D.D.<lb />Garrett is acandidate for re-election<lb />to Seat A of the Pitt County Board of<lb />Commissioners. Elected in T 1988,<lb />Mr. Gerrett has operated the D.D.<lb />Garrett Agency in Greenville since<lb />1946. Aside from his successful<lb />business career in accounting and<lb />real estate, Garrett has dedicated<lb />most of his life toward civic affairs;<lb />especially in the Afro-American<lb />community. No single person in Pitt<lb />County is more well known for being<lb />involved with issues related to the<lb />advance of Pitt County Ts black com-<lb />munity. In addition to being the first<lb /><lb />| black man elected as a commis-<lb /><lb />sioner in Pitt County, Mr. Garrett's<lb />influence has been instrumental in<lb />advances in voter registration,<lb />employment in county and city of-<lb />fices and the desegregation of public<lb />facilities and area businesses that<lb />were once reserved for whites only.<lb />Mr. Garrett has led or taken part in<lb /><lb />every major movement in Pitt<lb />County that has impacted opportu-<lb />nities or quality of life issues in the<lb />community.<lb /><lb />Commissioner Garrett believes<lb />that serving as an elected official is<lb />much more than a means of per-<lb />sonal accomplishment. He often<lb />says that itisimportant that elected<lb />officials are serious about the re-<lb />sponsibility related to public serv-<lb />ice. When asked about his own can-<lb />didacy for re-election, Garrett says<lb />that he has confidence that voters<lb />will consider his long record of pub-<lb />lic service as well as his recent four<lb />years as a strong yet calm voice as a<lb />Pitt County commissioner.<lb /><lb />Commissioner Garrett's dedica-<lb />tion to the community is reflected in<lb />his support and membership to<lb />many civic and religious organiza-<lb />tions. He is a member of York<lb />Memorial AME Zion Church, the<lb />Executive Committee éf the First<lb /><lb />Congressional District, the Black<lb />Leadership Caucus, the Pitt County<lb />Board of Realtors, the Pitt County<lb />Infant Mortality Task Force, the<lb />Greenville Industrial Epps Alumni<lb />Association, the Mid-East Commis-<lb />sion, the North Carolina Associa-<lb />tion of Realtors, the North Carolina<lb />Central University Alumni Associa-<lb />tion, the Pitt County NAACP (presi-<lb />dent emeritus), the West Greenville<lb />Neighborhood Clean-Up and Drug<lb />Prevention Task Force, the Pitt-<lb />Greenville Chamber of Commerce,<lb />the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the<lb />Pitt Aging Services Community, the<lb />Pitt County Democratic Party, the<lb />North Carolina Executive Commit-<lb />tee of the NAACP, the American<lb />Legion Post No. 160, the Martin<lb />County Community Action Com-<lb />mittee and the Mount Herman<lb />Masonic Lodge. Mr. Garrett is also<lb />the coordinator of social and politi-<lb />cal action of the North Carolina<lb /><lb />Conference of the AME Zion<lb />Church. He is a veteran of World<lb />War II, having served in the U.S.<lb />Navy.<lb /><lb />Although Mr. Garrett is a distin-<lb />guished senior citizen, he maintains<lb />a busy schedule that would exhaust<lb />many persons half his age. And<lb />while leading this active and well-<lb />traveled life, Commissioner Garrett<lb />is a very down-to-earth person and a<lb />family man who this week is cele-<lb />brating 50 years of marriage to his<lb />beloved wife, Clotea. He has two<lb />sons and five grandchildren.<lb /><lb />The re-election of Commissioner<lb />Garrett to the commissioner's Seat<lb />A is very timely and extremely<lb />important. A person does not need to<lb />be a political genius to realize that<lb />re-electing D.D. Garrett to the Pitt<lb />County Board of Commissioners<lb />makes a great deal of good common<lb />sense. Your vote and support will be<lb />appreciated.<lb /><lb />The Anti-Democratic Democrats<lb /><lb />BY DR. me) og FULANI<lb />On Tuesday t; March 31, the<lb />Now York Police. The first attack oc-<lb /><lb />canal outside the presidential de-<lb />bate at Lehman College, the second<lb />outside arestaurant where Gov. Bill<lb /><lb />Clinton was scheduled to appear at<lb />a post-debate party.<lb /><lb />Though I had a ticket to attend<lb />the debate, which I presented at the<lb />entrance gate, I was refused entry<lb />by New York City police on the di-<lb />rect instructions of Mr. Ferrer.<lb />When I protested to police that the<lb />exclusion was arbitrary and ~un-<lb />democratic, the order was given to<lb />eject me. I was surrounded by police,<lb />manhandled and forcibly thrown<lb />against the fence in full view of wit-<lb />nesses.<lb /><lb />After I was prevented from enter-<lb />ing Lehman College, I began a<lb />march of 150 supporters to the res-<lb />taurant to protest Clinton Ts appear-<lb />ance at a Bronx Democratic organi-<lb />zation reception hosted by a local<lb />city councilman. The protest ulti-<lb />mately forced Clinton to cancel his<lb />appearance,<lb /><lb />But after the peaceful march,<lb />which had a palice escort, and after<lb />having been led by the police to a<lb />protest spot directly in front of the<lb />restaurant, the site commander<lb />who led the attack at Lehman sud-<lb /><lb />denly brought 200 police in full riot<lb />gear out ontothe street, andover the<lb /><lb />protests of my attorney, ordered the<lb /><lb />police to rush the demonstrators<lb />and physically force us to the other<lb />side of the street.<lb /><lb />Simultaneously, several officers<lb />moved to arrest a supporter of mine<lb />on trumped-up charges of assault-<lb />ing a police officer.<lb /><lb />The viciousness with which the<lb />police attacked me and my support-<lb />ers made a very clear statement<lb />about how Mr. Ferrer and the<lb />Democratic Party feel about democ-<lb />racy. If I Tve done nothing else during<lb />the course of this primary cam-<lb />paign, I have exposed the extent to<lb />which the election process is under<lb />the very tight control of the Demo-<lb />cratic Party and the various institu-<lb />tions in which it operates "from the<lb />police to the courts to the Board of<lb /><lb />When I challenged the nominat-<lb />ing petitions of Sen. And when I<lb />and others attempted to exercise<lb />our constitutional right to hold a<lb />peaceful protest outside, the police<lb />attempted to provoke a riot.<lb /><lb />There is a very clear pattern here.<lb />It Ts a pattern of the Democratic<lb />Party going to whatever extremes "<lb />be they legislative, legalistic or life-<lb />threatening "in order to maintain<lb />its control of the political process<lb />and keep silenced any genuine<lb />voices of dissent, particularly voices<lb />that emanate from the black and<lb />Latino community.
