But what does it mean to<lb />other young African Americans?<lb /><lb />That question weighed heavily<lb />on my mind as I walked through<lb />the campus of ECU. So, I asked a<lb />few of the students for their inter-<lb />pretation of Black History month.<lb />Most said the same thing that I<lb />said; but, a few had different an-<lb />swers. One young man named<lb />Derrick said it should give people<lb />an incentive to find their origins,<lb />another student agreed with him<lb />on this.<lb /><lb />Then, another said it should re-<lb />mind us not to forget where we<lb />came from and to give something<lb />back toour community. Through a grant<lb />from NC Humanities Council, Dr.<lb />Mohammed Ahad conducted four<lb />community round tables on four<lb />cultures: Indian, Hispanic, Chi-<lb />nese, and Mid-Eastern. The pro-<lb />gram evaluations were glowing<lb />and suggested establishment of a<lb /><lb />permanent community-based cul-<lb /><lb />turalcenter. The then president of<lb />the Pitt-Greenville Chamber of<lb />Commerce and other. interested<lb />persons brainstormed the pros and<lb />cons of such an endeavor, The<lb />group suggested establishing 4<lb />small committee and a study group<lb />of interested professionals, com-<lb />munity representatives, and cul-<lb />tural activists. After exploration<lb /><lb />of need, an executive committee :<lb /><lb />was elected, and three subcom-<lb />mittees were appointed to begin<lb />the implementation process.
