I also<lb />liked the show that Mr. Johnson<lb /><lb />did when he had a drug addict<lb />tell what it was like to be hooked<lb />on drugs. These are just some of<lb />the things that I have learned<lb />about from listening to oInner<lb />City Voices ?.<lb /><lb />Mr. Johnson appears tobe very<lb />in-tune with what is going on in<lb />the Greenville area and finds<lb />professionals and experts in the<lb />fields that he is discussing.<lb /><lb /> oInner City Voices ? also gives<lb />us the citizens of Greenville a<lb />chance to ask guests questions<lb />or express views. Sooften<lb />city officials are to busy and<lb /><lb />wrapped up in themselves and :<lb /><lb />politics to appear on a talk show<lb /><lb />such as oInner City Voices ? and "<lb /><lb />expose themselves to questions<lb />from citizens. <p>eee Hae s POTS<lb /><lb />12 "-THE"M°VOICE - SEPTEMBER 18, 1991<lb /><lb /> o oStop killing our you<lb /><lb />On Labor Day I led a contingent<lb />in the annual West Indian-Ameri-<lb />can Day Parade, Black Brooklyn's<lb />biggest event. Our contingent,<lb />which included 25 family members<lb />and friends of young Black men<lb />who have died as a result of racial<lb />violence, marched under a banner<lb />that said oStop the Killing of Our<lb />Black men. ? Marching at my side<lb />were Bridgette Amos and Aubrey<lb /><lb />a police officer the week before,<lb />and Diane Hawkins, the mother of<lb />Yusuf Hawkins, the 16-year-old<lb />boy who was murdered two years<lb />ago by a mob of young white hooli-<lb />gans in Bensonhurst.<lb /><lb />Mayor Davis Dinkins and every<lb />other political bigwig marched at<lb />the front of the parade, which was<lb />to be expected " holidays are for<lb />show. Now that it Ts over, the rest<lb /><lb />ee eee a<lb /><lb />making the city run.<lb /><lb />I had spent the two weeks prior<lb />to the parade working the streets<lb />of the Black community, where<lb />young Black men were out in force<lb />to protest the death of a seven-<lb />teen-year-old Black child who had<lb />been hit by a carin Crown Heights,<lb />andthe police murderof tony Amos<lb />a few days later in Flatbush. For<lb />three days Mayor Dinkins was<lb /><lb />OO EEE ES SSS eT<lb /><lb />Heights. I was there not to cool out<lb />the anger, but to channel it in a<lb />positive direction. it was only after<lb />the people Ts chosen " not elected<lb /> " Black leaders had paved the<lb />way for him that New York Ts first<lb />African American mayor could go<lb />in.<lb /><lb />There is more than enough evi-<lb />dence to suggest that the cops T<lb />version of how this latest act of<lb /><lb />*<lb />4<lb />- ?<lb />&amp;<lb />%<lb />i<lb />:<lb />:<lb />%<lb />%<lb />+<lb />5<lb />e<lb />:<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />racial murder took place is a pack<lb />of lies. Among other things, the<lb />police had reported " up through<lb />the day after Tony was killed "<lb />that he had been hit by four bul-<lb />lets, two in the face and two in the<lb />chest. But according to hospital<lb />reports obtained the night of the<lb />murder and confirmed the follow-<lb />ing day by the Medical Examiner's<lb />office, Bridgette Amos T son was<lb />not shot in the face but at least<lb />twice in the back and several times<lb />through the arm and chest. é<lb /><lb /> oTony put his hands in their and<lb />says, ~O.K. you got it. I saw |<lb /><lb />the white cop empty his gun,<lb />shooting towards Tony's back.<lb />Tony Ts hands were in the air as he<lb />fell to the ground. ?<lb /><lb />Mr. Simmons and several other<lb />witnesses have said that while the<lb />saw Tony fire a gun in the air<lb />before the police arrived, the young<lb />man never aimed the gun at the<lb />officer Ts head as the police are<lb />claiming he did.<lb /><lb />The point is not that this young<lb />brother was a saint. the point is<lb />that he had the right to due pro-<lb />cess. which every citizen does. And<lb />that the cop who killed him didn Tt<lb />have the right to shoot him in the<lb />back, in cold blood.<lb /><lb />On Labor Day, just before Mayor<lb /><lb />Dinkins took his place at the head<lb />of the parade, Tony Ts parents,<lb />Diane Hawkins and I had a brief<lb />meeting with him.<lb /><lb />There is a perception in the Black<lb />community that the reason our<lb />mayor walked the streets of Crown<lb />Heights after a young Jewish stu-<lb />dents was killed there was because<lb />Hasidic Jews were involved but<lb />when Tony Amos gets shot in the<lb />back by the police he is not there.<lb />We told the mayor that we have<lb />eyewitnesses who are saying that<lb /><lb />, * Verticals + Duette<lb />(JoAnna, LouverDrape, Montage, Bali, Duette)<lb /><lb />¢ Draperies<lb /><lb />¢ Pouff Valances<lb /><lb />¢ Balloon Shades<lb /><lb />¢ Festoons * Scarves<lb />¢ Jabot &amp; Cascades<lb /><lb />¢ Full Line of Rods<lb /><lb />&amp; Hardware<lb />756-8483 -<lb />3110-A Evans Street Ci<lb /><lb />(Next To Bowen Cleaners)<lb />Open Mon. - Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.<lb /><lb />_ Lifetime Warranty on Bali Blinds!<lb /><lb />$40.00.<lb /><lb />Computer Services Presents:<lb /><lb />Introduction to Personal Computers<lb /><lb />° Bedspreads by Mr. Myron D. We told<lb />him that he needed to walk the<lb />streets of East Flatbush with<lb />Bridgette Amos and Aubrey Tu-<lb />dor the way that he walked the<lb />streets of Crown Heights " that<lb />he needs to demonstrate the same<lb />compassion and outrage when a<lb />Black child dies as he does when a<lb />Hasidic child dies.
