The horse is<lb />prepared for the, ~day of battle,<lb />But victory belongs to the Lord. ?<lb />[Proverbs 21:30,31 NASB]<lb /><lb />B. Understanding justice the<lb />majority most often misunder-<lb />stand the strength derived from<lb />the humble administration of<lb />justice. The ruling minority be it<lb />South Africa or a county in South<lb />Carolina - fear the strength of<lb />equity in the empowerment of<lb />the disenfranchised through<lb />justice. oThe execution of justice<lb />is joy for the righteous, But is<lb />terror tothe workers of iniquity. ?<lb />[Proverbs 21:15 NASB] The one<lb />- who practices injustice is terri-<lb />fied by the one voice in the wil-<lb />derness, shouting to clear the<lb />way for the Lord God: the Living<lb />God Who loves justice!<lb /><lb />Justice begats freedom. REID<lb /><lb />CALVIN "CJ" JONES<lb /><lb />ey eel<lb /><lb />BABY FACE<lb /><lb />Thinking of Malcolm, T91<lb /><lb />We pause this week to celebrate<lb />the 66th birthday of one of the<lb />great figures. Black leaders, and<lb />progressive activists of the century,<lb />known the world over as Malcolm<lb />X. I recall first hearing of Malcolm<lb />when I was 10 years old, as a boy<lb />preacher attending elementary<lb />school in a Black middle class<lb />neighborhood in Queens, New York.<lb />It was scrawled all across the front<lb />pages, and was the subject of our<lb />current events conversation that<lb />Malcolm X had been killéd at the<lb />Audubon Ballroom in Harlem.<lb /><lb />He was described variously<lb />throughout the mainstream media<lb />as a hate teacher, as a Black mili-<lb />tant. And the implication was that<lb />he got what he deserved. Yet some-<lb />thing of the mystique of him in-<lb />trigued me even at that young age,<lb />and several months later the first<lb />book that I seriously studied ended<lb />up being the Autobiography of<lb />Malcolm X as told through Alex<lb />Haley.<lb /><lb />Malcolm Ts autobiography tre-<lb />mendously affected me and led me<lb />into my boyhood adulation of Adam<lb />Clayton Powell and Marcus Garvey,<lb />Powell being one of the few Chris-<lb />tian clergymen whom Malcolm ad-<lb />mired and Malcolm Ts father being a<lb />follower of the honorable Marcus<lb />Aurelius Garvey.<lb /><lb />As I've ~in the movement<lb />I Tve never lost T my affection and<lb />respect and admiration for<lb />Malcolm. I have met with and<lb />shared conversations both with<lb />those critical of him and those who<lb />praised him, those who knew him<lb />very well and have talked to his<lb />apparent strengths and alleged<lb />weaknesses, Still, knowing that no<lb />man is perfect and knowing that no<lb />man should be required to repre-<lb />sent perfection, 1 maintained a<lb /><lb />deep-seated respect and admira-<lb />tion for our Shining Black Prince.<lb /><lb />The historical Malcolm is impor-<lb />tant in several areas, and as we<lb />gather this weekend in Harlem for<lb />official observances, concluding<lb />with a mass parade led by his<lb />widow, I must deal with what the<lb />historical Malcolm will mean, more<lb />importantly than the particular<lb />pros and cons of the personal<lb />Malcolm to whom people will al-<lb />ways try to reduce great debates.<lb /><lb />One, Malcolm was the chief pro-<lb />ponent of the Nation of Islam and<lb />the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.<lb />He became a central figure in what<lb />became and remains a growing<lb />theo-philosophical thrust in which<lb />Elijah Muhammad helped uplift<lb />the Black man Ts thinking and<lb />lifestyle from urban decadence back<lb />to its original form of cleanliness,<lb />productively and aspiring to noth-<lb />ing short of freedom, justice and<lb />equality.<lb /><lb />Unlike his contemporaries, i.e.,<lb />Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., James<lb />Farmer, A. Philip Randolph and<lb />others. Malcolm came the way of<lb />the northern ghetto/street life/<lb />prison life rather than the South-<lb />ern church/mainstream college/<lb />seeking to be accredited by society<lb />background of the aforementioned<lb />leaders of his day. Therefore,<lb />Malcolm Ts orientation, projection<lb />and ability to communicate were<lb />far different from those who com-<lb />peted with him for the minds of his<lb />people. Malcolm in many ways was<lb />the first to legitimize the street<lb />Black Ts rise to an accredited, re-<lb />spectéd world figure. In reality<lb />Malcolm did for the smart, creative<lb />Black who became trapped in street<lb />life what Dr. King did for the aca-<lb />demic institutions. he freed them<lb />and gave them a credible option<lb /><lb />BONDED<lb />INSURED<lb /><lb /> ~<lb /><lb /> o| oWE ARE THE DRY CLEANING STORE THAT COMES TO YOUR DOOR ?<lb /><lb />fd<lb />AND<lb />LICENSED ~*<lb />Si<lb />Same Day ime<lb />Service A Gene nmet<lb />Available Mobile Dry Cleaning Service<lb /><lb />Have your Dry Cleaning And Laundry Picked Up<lb />And Delivered Back To Your Home Or Office!<lb /><lb />Priced Competively SAVE<lb />We Take Personal With Area Stores. It was<lb />Malcolm in his last years who tire-<lb />lessly went through Asia, Africa<lb />and Europe, hooking the battle of<lb />Africans all over the world, and<lb />identifying with the battle of Afri-<lb />can Americans with the struggle of<lb />Africans all over the world, and<lb />identifying with the battle against<lb />colonialism on the mother conti-<lb />nent and the progressive struggles<lb />in Europe. So in many ways<lb />Malcolm was the visionary who<lb />continued the Pan Africanist thrust<lb />of Garvey and _ others,<lb />contemporizing and making it live<lb />andbreathein his own times, which<lb />has led with direct impact to the<lb />transcontinental. vision that his<lb />now shared by many of African<lb />descent.<lb /><lb />Thirdly, Malcolm preached the<lb />philosophy of self-sufficiency, in-<lb />dependence and self-empower-<lb />ment. It has become the theme of<lb />his people, while in his own time he<lb />was castigated, criticized and os-<lb />tracized for not joining the integra-<lb />tion movement. History will prove<lb />that in the long run it was this self-<lb />empowerment " communities<lb />having their own integrity and<lb />having their own power to develop<lb />as separate entities and develop<lb />agendas from power bases that were<lb />separate and self-sufficient "<lb />which ended up being the rule of<lb />the day rather than the extreme,<lb />isolated position that it was pro-<lb />jected to be in the early 60s.<lb /><lb />As we say oHappy Birthday ? to<lb />Malcolm, he has already been vin-<lb />dicated by history, because no ad-<lb />jective attached to him reduced his<lb />stature. Children walk around 26<lb />years after his assassination with<lb />his picture on their lapels and on<lb />their medallions and on their t-<lb />shirts, showing that he has out-<lb />lived all of his critics, and all of<lb />their oeffectiveness. ? Major motion<lb />picture studios prepare to tell his<lb />life story; bookstores are jammed<lb />with books of his speeches and life<lb />stories and interpretations. So<lb />though he suffered in life, he was<lb />vindicated in history because he<lb />had the courage to say something<lb />that lived longer than his longings,<lb />longer than his heart, longer than<lb />his physical being. He stood for the<lb />rights of human beings that will be<lb />relevant as long as there are hu-<lb />man beings.<lb /><lb />Why was Malcolm important? It<lb />was important for someone to step<lb />out of the choir of subjugation, of<lb />assimilation, of being co-opted, and<lb />to speak independently of behalf of<lb />the rights of human beings to rise<lb />up and live to their fullest degree<lb />creative and self-empowered lives.<lb />Malcolm had the nerve to be at-<lb />tacked by the moderates as an ex-<lb />tremist and to be attacked by the<lb /><lb />| extremists as a moderate, and still<lb /><lb />keep his eye on the prize of haman<lb />ts and human dignity.<lb />wish in retrospect we couldclam<lb />some of those anxious nights that<lb />he spent leading up to his death.
