<lb />In the Black community, the<lb />most constructive and the most<lb />productive organizations are the<lb />women's groups.<lb /><lb />For example, the kind of com-<lb />munity service and self-help pro-<lb />grams that most of us are waking<lb />up to have been operated for de-<lb />cades by the Black Greek-letter<lb />sororities: homes for unwed<lb />mothers: scholarships and coun-<lb />seling for poor yéuths; assistance<lb />to the aged; etc.<lb /><lb />My mind moved in the direction<lb />of the longstanding, but little<lb />noted, leadership that Black<lb />women have and do Provide. Al-<lb />pha Kappa Alpha Sorority Ts re-<lb />cent campaign to focus Black<lb />people on the use of our most<lb />wasted resource is a prime ex-<lb />ample.<lb /><lb />Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) re-<lb />cently conducted a national cam-<lb />paign designed to get Black<lb />Americans into the habit of obuy-<lb />ing Black, ? thereby developing a<lb />thriving Black entrepreneurial<lb />class, explained AKA International<lb />President Mary Shy Scott of At-<lb />lanta.<lb /><lb />Although AKA is target-<lb />ing Black-owned firms immedi-<lb /><lb />ate benefactors of the Black Dollar<lb />Day campaign, it is the total Black<lb />community that it hopes to im-<lb /><lb />prove.<lb /><lb />The AKAs hope the new ohabit ?<lb />of making our dollars make some<lb />sense can help close the 56% dis-<lb />parity in incomes between Blacks<lb />and Whites. And, of course, the<lb />largest part of that gap is among<lb />the Black poor and young.<lb /><lb />That Ts why, for example, college<lb />scholarships (which infuse the<lb />young with the necessary human<lb />capital, i.e., education and on-the-<lb />job experience) are crucial to<lb />community development.<lb /><lb />Helping Blacks in business is<lb />fine, as long as Blacks in business<lb />help the needy and vulnerable in<lb />our community. Essentially, we<lb />are using a capitalist system anda<lb />free market to elevate the stand-<lb />ing of all segments of the Black<lb />community and it necessitates a<lb />careful balancing of responsibili-<lb />ties and rewards.<lb /><lb /> oBuy Black ? campaigns have<lb />historically failed because Black<lb />entrepreneurs failed to understand<lb />that reciprocity, i. e., fair prices.<lb />courtesy, discounts, philanthropy<lb />and new jobs, is essential to a<lb /><lb />Daniel Dawson<lb /><lb />and<lb />making them Happy ?<lb /><lb />Residential/Land/<lb />Commercial<lb />Property management &<lb />Sales<lb /><lb />(919)758-0456<lb />(919)355-7257<lb />Fax: 830-4789<lb /><lb />D. Mrs. Scott said.<lb /><lb />Black-owned firms have rown<lb />by more than 77% since 1972, but<lb />they still generate less than 1% of<lb />the total business receipts and<lb />employment in the nation, AKA<lb />Economic Coordinator JacqulynC.<lb />Shropshire explains.<lb /><lb />That point is directly related to<lb />the fact that Blacks spend only<lb />6.6% of their income with a Black<lb />business or professional. In other<lb />words, with ourcurrent retrograde<lb />consumption pattern (95% to non-<lb />Blacks), there could be no result<lb />other than 1% of total business<lb />receipts for Blacks.<lb /><lb />The Black Dollar Day campaign<lb />is part of AKA Ts Economic Em-<lb />powerment program and it is be-<lb />ing supported by other Black<lb />Greek-letter organizations,<lb />churches and civic groups.<lb /><lb />By adding economic empower-<lb />ment to the many advances we<lb />have made in civil rights and<lb />politics. Blacks would have, for<lb />the first time, individual rights "<lb />or freedom.<lb /><lb />Little by little, our community is<lb />moving in the right direction. And<lb />thanks to the Black women of AKA,<lb />the movement is on course.<lb /><lb />Tony Brown Ts Journal TV series<lb />can be seen on public television in<lb />greenville on Channel 2 (WUND).<lb />Please consult TV listings or phone<lb />he station for air time.<lb /><lb />Fellowship<lb />Banquet<lb /><lb />Fellowship Banquetis sponsored<lb />by Pitt County Chapter of A & T<lb />Alumni on Saturday, April 27 at<lb />6:00 p.m.<lb /><lb />It will be held in the J.H. <lb />aie ees Sha<lb /><lb />4 "THE"M'VOICE - APRIL 24-MAY 1, 1991<lb /><lb />Ten lessons for children in the 199 )s<lb /><lb />MARSHA MERCER<lb /><lb />ASHINGTON "In the ru-<lb />ral, segregated South of the 1940s<lb />and 50s, a little girl named for<lb />Black opera singer Marian<lb />Anderson heard a powerful mes-<lb />sage from her preacher father and<lb />otherBlack adults. She was im-<lb />portant, they told her time and<lb />again. She could be and do any-<lb />thing she wanted.<lb /><lb />The child grew up, went to<lb />college, earned a law degree from<lb />Yale. She became president of the<lb />Children's Defense Fund, the<lb />nation Ts preeminent child advo-<lb />cacy group. Today Marian Wright<lb />Edelman Ts goal is nothing less<lb />than to eliminate child poverty in<lb />this decade.<lb /><lb />To that end, her group lobbies<lb />Congress. It is organizing a cru-<lb />sade for Black children that will<lb />enlist Black leaders from various<lb />fields. It is building a network of<lb />advocates to speak out for policies<lb />favorable to children on the state<lb />and local levels.<lb /><lb />Marian WrghtEdelman believes<lb />more is needed. She wants to spark<lb /><lb />aspiritual revival andis sharing the<lb />lessons of her youth with a new<lb />generation of Black children.<lb /><lb /> oTen Lessons to Help Us<lb />Through the 1990s ? is part of the<lb />introduction Mrs. Edelman wrote<lb />to oThe State of America Ts Chil-<lb />dren 1991, ? a report issued by the<lb />Children Ts Defense Fund.<lb /><lb /> oWhile our children can take or<lb />leave these lessons, parents and<lb />other elders must make sure<lb />children can never say they were<lb />not told or reminded, ? she writes.<lb />Here they are in brief.<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 1: There is no free<lb />lunch. oDon Tt feel entitled to any-<lb />thing you don'tsweat and struggle<lb />for. Our young people have got to<lb />work their way up " hard and<lb />continuously. So we need to teach<lb />them by example not to be lazy, to<lb />do their homework, to pay atten-<lb />tion to detail, to take care and<lb />pride in work and to be reliable.<lb />Fach of us must take the initiative<lb />in creating opportunity and not<lb />wait around for a favor. We must<lb />not assume a door is closed but<lb />must push on it. ?<lb /><lb />See eee<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 2: Set goals aa. e<lb />work quietly and systemati-<lb />cally toward them. oWe must<lb />all try to resist quick-fix, simplistic<lb />answers and easy gains, which<lb />often disappear just as quickly as<lb />they come. We must not feel<lb />compelled to talk if we do have<lb />anything to say that matters. ?<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 3: Assign yourself.<lb /> oMy daddy used to ask us whether<lb />the teacher gave us any homework.<lb />Ifwe said no, he'd say, Well, assign<lb />yourself. TDon't wait around for your<lb />boss or your friend or spouse to<lb />direct you. Don't be a political by-<lb />stander. Democracy is not a spec-<lb />tator sport. Run for political office,<lb />especially school boards. ?<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 4: Never work just<lb />for money. oMoney alone won't<lb />save your soul or build a decent<lb />family or help you sleep at<lb />night...Don Tt confuse wealth or<lb />fame with character. And don Tt<lb />tolerate or condone moral corrup-<lb />tion whether it Ts found in high or<lb />low places, whatever its color. ?<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 5: Don Tt be afraid<lb />of taking risks or of being<lb /><lb />Taft Furniture Co.'s<lb />Spring Clearance Sale<lb /><lb />Save *60 ? to *400 ?<lb /><lb />in Sets<lb /><lb />PSION Dal a 1datiO<lb /><lb />We<lb /><lb />Twin ea. pc.<lb /><lb />)-juilted<lb /><lb /> ~119<lb />$299.<lb /> ~369<lb /><lb />[ys struction Nth<lb /><lb />Full ea. pc.<lb /><lb />Queen<lb />2-pc. set<lb /><lb />King<lb />3-pc. set<lb /><lb />Sealy<lb /><lb />Py { ot<lb /><lb />ty {<lb />b x } 1] 1<lb /><lb />99<lb /><lb />Twin ea. pc.<lb /><lb />Premium<lb /><lb />?"? added binge-acton<lb />mS1an Dar foundatian<lb /><lb />*129<lb /> ~349<lb /> ~449<lb /><lb />Full ea. pc.<lb />Queen<lb />2-pc. set<lb /><lb />King<lb />3-pc. set<lb /><lb /> ~at ga Alenia<lb /> o| mattress<lb /><lb />7 o 2 eye Sealy Posturepedic<lb />vw. What matters is<lb />how many times you get up. ?<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 6: Take parenting<lb />and family life seriously. oAnd<lb />insist that those you work for and<lb />who represent you do so. Our<lb />leaders mouth family values we<lb />donot practice... We must all stress<lb />family rituals and be moral ex-<lb />amples for our children. If we cut<lb />corners, they will too. ?<lb /><lb />¢ Lesson 7: Remember and<lb />help America remember that<lb />the fellowship of human be-<lb />ings is more important than<lb />the fellowship of race and<lb />class and gender in a demo-<lb />cratic society. oBe decent and<lb />fair and insist that others be so in<lb />your presence...Let Ts face up to,<lb />rather than ignore, our growing<lb />racial problems, which are<lb />America Ts historic and future<lb /><lb /> T criticized. oAn anon<lb /><lb />pi ies rs Scodartal to to<lb />go to the White House or Congress<lb />or State House for a chat, but<lb />words alone will not meet<lb />children Ts or the nation Ts needs.<lb />Political leadership and different<lb />budget priorities will. I don't<lb />care how hard it gets. I know how<lb />discouraging it is to struggle to<lb />help the needy year after year<lb />with too few people and too little<lb />money and community support.<lb />And don Tt think you have to ~win T<lb />immediately oreven at all tomake<lb />a difference. Conley<lb />High School, ominority students ?,<lb />especially the black athletes, have<lb />been denied the opportunity to<lb />excel in higher education. This<lb />letter is primarily focused on the<lb />Basketball Team.<lb /><lb />Coach Cobby Deans has denied<lb />all African-American players the<lb />opportunity to obtain more ath-<lb />letic achievement in colleges and<lb />universities. The white basket-<lb />ball players get more playing time<lb />than blacks, although someofthem<lb />are not the best players.<lb /><lb />They are going to a college or<lb />university due to the fact that<lb />Coach Deans forced them on the<lb />front lines of the game so college<lb />scouts could see them, while black<lb />players stayed in the background.<lb />Black players do not get looked at<lb />by universities. Most college scouts<lb />know that the best players are the<lb />black ones and that is what they<lb />are looking for. But what good is it<lb />for the black athletes when they<lb />don Tt get much playing time. The<lb />black athletes are only being used<lb />for the school advantages. The<lb />black athletes should be pushed to<lb />exce! in school academics, as white<lb />athletes are doing, other than to<lb /><lb />excel in sports.<lb /><lb />The Booster Club has too much<lb />influence on Coach Deans. They<lb />have influenced whom should get<lb />the most playing time. It seems as<lb />though the Booster Club members<lb />are primarily the parents of the<lb />white basketball players that can Tt<lb /><lb />play basketball at all. We need<lb />more black role models, male and<lb />female, inour Athletic Department<lb />at D.H. Conley.<lb /><lb />Coach Keith Gould plays to win<lb />and keep the team happy. Each<lb />player under his own system,<lb />knows their role and fits in per-<lb />fectly on the team. And all of them<lb />get playing time. He does an out-<lb />standing job on and off the court.<lb />He deserved credit for the success<lb />of D.H. Conley Ts Girl Basketball<lb />and Volleyball teams.
