Hamilton, Dean,<lb />Morehouse School of Religion of<lb />the Interdenominational Theo-<lb />logical Center in the Atlantic<lb />University Complex, Atlantic,<lb />Georgia. Dr. Hamilton is also the<lb />Pastor of Tabernacle Missionary<lb />Church Augusta, Georgia which is<lb />one of the ten oldest Black churches<lb />in the nation. The total community<lb />is invited to share in this glorious<lb />occassion.<lb /><lb />In 1879, the Cornerstone Mis-<lb />sionary Baptist Church was<lb />founded as oHickory Hill ? Baptist<lb />Church. The name oHickory Hill ?<lb />was chosen because the building<lb />was located on Greene Street near<lb />the site.of the present Fifth Street<lb />Fire Station. The Reverend Ruffin<lb />Carroll was the first pastor. The<lb />service of worship was held each<lb />third Sunday of the month.<lb /><lb />In 1903, during the pastorate<lb /><lb />of the Reverend G.W. Bucklum,<lb /><lb />the church was moved to Clark<lb />Street near the northeast corner<lb />of Fourteenth Street. The church<lb />was completely destroyed by fire<lb />on Saturday night before the fourth<lb />Sunday in April, 1923 during the<lb />pastorate of the Reverend Ike<lb />Tillery. Services of worship were<lb /><lb />111 years<lb /><lb />temporarily held in the Knights of<lb />Gideon Hall on Fourteenth Street.<lb /><lb />Under the leadership of the<lb />Reverend W.H. Bryant of Kinston,<lb />NC, the church purchased a dry-<lb />kiln on Thirteenth and Railroad<lb />Streets from the Pitt Lumber<lb />Company on June 4, 1923, for three<lb />thousand dollars. This structure<lb />was renovated to become a beau-<lb />tiful sanctuary and the church Ts<lb />name was changed to the Corner-<lb />stone Missionary Baptist Church.<lb />The Cornerstone-laying ceremony<lb />and the service for dedication were<lb />held on November 18,1923.<lb /><lb />After the pastorate of the<lb />Reverend J.H. Jones for sixmonths<lb />in 1925, the Reverend Joseph E.<lb />Tillett, an educator form Edenton,<lb />NC, was called as pastor in 1926.<lb />The church experienced unprec-<lb />edented growth under the leader-<lb />ship of Reverend Tillett. Another<lb />regular service of worship was<lb />added on each first Sunday as well<lb />as a youth service of worship on<lb />each second Sunday. Many new<lb />auxiliaries and activities were or-<lb />ganized during this time. The ze-<lb />nith of this period was the con-<lb />struction of an educational build-<lb />ing in 1953.<lb /><lb />On August 13, 1969, the Rev-<lb />erend Williams B. Moore of New<lb />Bern, N:C.; ~was.called as pastor.<lb />Reverend Moore gave able lead-<lb />ership to the church and commu-<lb />nity and also served as principal of<lb />the Bruce Falkland Elementary<lb /><lb />(continued on page 2) -<lb /><lb />Eastern North Carolina's<lb />Minority Voice<lb /><lb />What You See Is What You Get, What<lb />You Read Is what You Know & Save<lb /><lb />; one. Dis-<lb />trict attorneys plea bargain the<lb />offense down to simple robbery,<lb />assault, and voluntary or invol-<lb />untary manslaughter. Often this<lb />is done with neither the knowledge<lb />nor the consent of the victim. A<lb />quirk that allows D.A. Ts to get away<lb />with this atrocity is the fact that,<lb />in criminal matters, the state is<lb />the plaintiff, and the victim has<lb />little say in the prosecution of the<lb />case. More often than not, crimi-<lb />nals receive short sentences and,<lb />if they receive longer sentences - -<lb />like life in prison - - they're out on<lb />the streets in seven years or less.<lb />In states like California, nearly 50<lb />percent of inmates entering prison<lb />were on probation or people at the<lb />time of their crime. I say it Ts more<lb />costly not to build jails. The aver-<lb />age criminal costs us at least<lb />$100,000 a year in losses from<lb />burglaries, arson, robbery, and<lb />grand theft auto. And that doesn Tt<lb />include intangible costs, such as<lb />personnal trauma from rape, as-<lb />sault, and the loss of loved ones.<lb />Neither does it include the cost of<lb />protection, including security ser-<lb />vices, locks, bars, and the incon-<lb />veniences we suffer such as fear<lb />and having to have exact change.<lb />Considering these costs, the<lb />$20,000 to keep a criminal behind<lb />bars is quite a bargain.<lb /><lb />Protecting is from criminals is<lb />the major function of local, state,<lb />and federal government. And they<lb />have failed miserably in that role.<lb />The primary reason for that failure<lb />is that politicians have given a<lb />higher priority to things they<lb />shouldn Tt be doing. Short of poli-<lb />ticians making crime more costly,<lb />citizens will have to raise the cost<lb />by arming themselves. oWilliams, ?<lb />you say, othat Ts a Dodge City<lb />mentality. ? President George Bush vetoed<lb />the Civil Rights Act of 1990 be-<lb />cause he believed it would cause<lb />undue legal harm to businesses<lb />because of excessive lawsuits. The<lb />Congress promptly failed to over-<lb />ride the veto. The President is<lb />Republican and the Congress is<lb />overwhelmingly Democratic.<lb /><lb />It appears that Blacks eithér<lb />have no real political friends when<lb />it comes to so-called civil rights or<lb />both parties are bowing to the re-<lb />ality of White public opinion.<lb /><lb /> oThis is the first civil rights<lb />bill in the history of the nation<lb /><lb />i 1A . | L<lb /><lb />ic<lb /><lb />or!<lb />#7)<lb /><lb />where the President has vetoed it<lb />and Congress has failed to over-<lb />ride it, ? said one Black leader.<lb /> oThere Ts a new wave of racism in<lb />this country epitomized by David<lb />Duke, ? he added.<lb /><lb />But I wonder if David Duke,<lb />who recently received 45% of the<lb />total vote and 9% of the Black vote<lb />in his failed attempt at being a<lb />U.S. Senator from Louisiana,<lb />should be singled out for all or<lb />most of the blame.<lb /><lb />What about the voters in<lb />Louisiana (56% White and 9%<lb />Black) who find his White su-<lb /><lb />Get A New<lb />Ks Luok For Back<lb /> ? He aims it at the fears that<lb />increasingly more and more<lb />Americans have that Blacks are<lb />too lazy to work, but too eager to<lb />have ajob given to them in spite of<lb />their disqualifications.<lb /><lb />While we may differ with that<lb />argument, there is no arguing the<lb />fact that affirmative action is the<lb />rallying point for anti-Black senti-<lb />ment in America. Blacks won the<lb />battle of cohersive legislation, but<lb />lost the war of public relations to<lb />bigots like Duke.<lb /><lb />And opinion works its way<lb />through all levels of society and is<lb />eventually reflected in electoral<lb />politics and legislation. The new<lb />head knooks Ts name, after David<lb />Duke, may be mickey Mouse, but<lb />with the givens of the perception<lb />of affirmative action as something<lb />for nothing, there will always be a<lb />new head-hater of Black people<lb />waiting in the wings.<lb /><lb />Which leads me to my point.<lb />How much responsibility should<lb />the Black leaders bear for spend-<lb /><lb />ing all of the political and moral<lb />capital of Black America during<lb />the last two decades on an affirma-<lb />tive action program that has<lb />largely benefited the Black middle<lb />class and created the image that<lb />all Blacks are lazy and incompe-<lb />tent?<lb /><lb />And why did the same leaders<lb />never design these affirmative ac-<lb />tion programs to benefit poor<lb />Blacks, which would have been a<lb />justifiable reason for their exist-<lb />ence? Or an empriical means to<lb />demonstrate that those Blacks who<lb />benefited did something for the<lb />non-benefited among us?<lb /><lb />With noemphasis being placed<lb />on self-sufficiency over the last 20<lb />years, and all of it on social pro-<lb />grams sanctioned by Whites, Black<lb />leaders are now reduced to blam-<lb />ing David Duke for our negative<lb />position.<lb /><lb />I don Tt doubt for a moment<lb />that Duke would like to see Blacks<lb />hung and dried, but in all honesty,<lb />I cannot blame him for our condi-<lb />tion. Whether ornot you think<lb />that homosexuality is against na-<lb />ture or God, or you agree there is<lb />nothing wrong with it, the tactic<lb />Helms is using to discredit Gantt<lb />is unsavory.
