          <lb />j =»... .eaDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 27, 19990 " THE ~M T VOICE<lb />Change proposed by Southern<lb /><lb />Leadership Conference<lb />_ (continued from page 1)<lb /><lb />- astreet after Martin Luther King<lb />_ dr. that transvered the different<lb />communities in Greenville, not<lb />just an all black area.<lb /><lb />A street sign bearing King Ts<lb />name could serve as a reminder<lb />of how far Greenville has come<lb /><lb />and how far the city has to go.<lb />Let us remember Dr. King Ts vi-<lb />sion of a world where race doesn Tt<lb />matter, in his own words where<lb />people owill not be judged by the<lb />color of their skin but by the<lb />content of their character. <lb /><lb />City establishes tree team<lb /><lb />Citizens of Greenville will soon<lb />be able to see results from a new<lb />coordinated effort involving trees<lb />in the City. The City of Greenville<lb />has established a oTree Team to<lb />study tree issues in the city Ts ju-<lb />risdiction. The team is made up of<lb />four people - Environmental<lb />Planner Donald Belk, Buildingand<lb />Grounds Superintendent Ken<lb />Jackson, Parks Superintendent<lb />Walter Stasavich, and Jeff Byrd of<lb />Greenville Utilities Commission.<lb /><lb />The widening of Evans Street<lb />is completed. Now that the miles<lb />of pavement are down, it is time to<lb />look at what goes beside the road.<lb />Making Evans Street beautiful is<lb />the responsibility of two different<lb />groups. The NC Department of<lb />Transportation will handle the<lb />task from Greenville Boulevard to<lb />Howell Street and the City of<lb />Greenville will work from Howell<lb />to 10th Streets. Greenville Ts<lb />Community Appearance Commis-<lb />sion (CAC) played a major role in<lb />recommending the types of<lb />greenery to be planted by DOT<lb /><lb />along this section of roadway.<lb />Crepe myrtles are scheduled to be<lb /><lb />planted. The City Tree Team and<lb />CAC will plan for the City-owned<lb />section.<lb /><lb />Because the existing public<lb />right-of-away on Evans Street is<lb />so narrow (from 7 to 10 feet),<lb />planting of large shade trees will<lb />not be possible. So the Tree Team<lb />is looking at other alternatives.<lb /><lb />The idea for the Tree Team<lb />came out of a series of meetings<lb />organized by Senior Planner Libby<lb />Anderson. On June 14th the City<lb />invited several otree experts to<lb />talk with city personnel and rep-<lb />resentatives from local environ-<lb />mental groups. The guests were<lb />NC Urban Forester Tex<lb />Kunselman, NC State University Ts<lb />Dr. Jim McGraw, and Regional<lb />Forester Jim Key. The experts rec-<lb />ommended a more proactive and<lb />coordinated effort by the City.<lb /><lb />City Manager Ron Kimble ap-<lb />pointed the Tree Team shortly<lb />thereafter.<lb /><lb />The responsibility for main-<lb />taining, planting and planning for<lb />trees on public rights-of-way and<lb /><lb />(continued on page 3)<lb /><lb />wr<lb /><lb />Greenville, N.C.<lb /><lb />Women Ts Issues<lb />Adults<lb /><lb />we<lb /><lb />Carolina Psychological Associates<lb />S4 Doctors Park<lb /><lb />happily announces association<lb />with<lb />CHARLA SIZEMORE DAVIS, M.A.<lb />speciality, Avrocentric Approach<lb />Psychodiagnostics<lb /><lb />Adolescents<lb />Call M-F 8-5 for even/wkend apts<lb />Vv. I Tm looking for a 25%<lb />jump in attendance this year<lb />because we will have more ex-<lb />hibits, especially in livestock,<lb />more free entertainment, more<lb />added to the historic farm mu-<lb />seum, more midway and more<lb />things that haveneverbeen seen<lb />here before. oAlso, he added,<lb /> owe've got more livestock shows<lb />than ever. Forrest was refer-<lb />ring to the Hog Show on Monday<lb />night, October 1 and the two<lb />Lamb Shows. One Lamb Showis<lb />for Pitt County only on Wednes-<lb />day, October 3 at 7:00 pm and<lb />the other is for all of eastern<lb />North Carolina on Saturday,<lb />October 6 at 12:00 noon. Also<lb />there will be a Heifer Show at<lb />the livestock barn on Saturday,<lb />October 6 at 3:00 pm. If Forrests T<lb />predictions are realized this year,<lb />attendance could top 100,000.<lb /><lb />In addition to livestock, the<lb />agricultural and commercial ex-<lb />hibit building is expected to be<lb />filled to capacity. The regions<lb />pride in agriculture, education,<lb />science and industry will be dis-<lb />played for all to see. In the Farm<lb />Museum, or Village of Yester-<lb />year, to which it is sometimes<lb />referred, there have been new<lb /><lb />1990 FREE ATTRACTIONS<lb /><lb />displays added including a ca-<lb />boose and 100 T of track at the old<lb />depot. This exhibit of a turn of<lb />the century village oriented to<lb />agriculture is considered one of<lb />the finest of its type anywhere<lb />with 20 buildings packed with<lb />farm antiques. The building.<lb />Forrest stated, are not replicas<lb />but the real thing ... not built on<lb />the site, but moved to the site.<lb /> oWith a revamping of the fair-<lb />grounds last year, said Forrest,<lb /> owe have better access now and<lb />had arecord crowd visit the Farm<lb />Museum. A $25,000 extension<lb />show ring and seating have been<lb />added to the livestock barn,<lb />Forrest said. oWe are trying to<lb />put back into the fair the great-<lb />est county fair in the state, he<lb />said. oWe are now considered by<lb />many to be the state Ts fastest<lb />growing fair out of 55 fairs to be<lb />held in North Carolina this year. <lb /><lb />On The Midway<lb /><lb />Amusements of America have<lb />added over one million dollars<lb />worth of new equipment and<lb />much of it will be in Greenville<lb />this year with the midway being<lb />recognized in the last six years<lb />as the biggest midway east of<lb />Raleigh. There will be over 40<lb />attractions from the kid rides to<lb />the major rides to the spectacu-<lb />lar rides to the shows and con-<lb />cessions, all powered by eight<lb />roaring generators. Amusements<lb />of America has played the Pitt<lb />county Fair for 17 years and has<lb />an excellent record of cleanli-<lb />ness and safety. This is one of<lb />America Ts largest carnivals and<lb />1990 marks their 50th anniver-<lb />sary tour over the eastern U.S.<lb />and Canada. Over 110 vehicles<lb />of all descriptions must be used<lb />to bring this huge arsenal of<lb />equipment to Greenville from<lb />Fayetteville before leaving<lb />Greenville the next week for the<lb />Georgia State Fair in Macon,<lb />Georgia.<lb /><lb />Free Attractions<lb />Never has there been more free<lb /><lb />attractions on the fairgrounds in<lb />the fair Ts 71 years, as there will<lb />be in 1990, according to fair offi-<lb />cials. Share inter-<lb />esting parts of your reading.<lb /><lb />¢ Let your child see you use<lb />reading in daily life: preparing<lb /><lb />recipes, following directions,<lb />reading sports scores and picking<lb />a TV program.<lb /><lb />* Have things to read at home:<lb />magazines, newspapers, books.<lb /><lb />* Very young children should<lb />start a book collection, with a<lb />special place to keep it. Make<lb />birthdays and holidays occasions<lb />for giving books and magazine<lb />subscriptions.<lb /><lb />© At the library, help children<lb />learn how to choose books, but<lb />give them leeway in selecting what<lb />appeals to them. Librarians can<lb />help.<lb /><lb />* Don Tt constantly challenge<lb />your children with difficult books.<lb />Allow them the luxury of easy<lb />reading. For reluctant or slow<lb />readers, suggest short, humorous<lb />poems that encourage rather than<lb />frustrate them.<lb /><lb />* Listen to your child read on<lb />a regular basis, and don Tt be criti-<lb />cal. Praise the child Ts successes<lb />and avoid correcting every word.<lb />Keep it fun; don Tt turn it into a<lb />reading lesson.<lb /><lb />* Read to your children even<lb />after the learn to read. In these days<lb />of lax and conflicting laws, aman<lb />who has been divorced and re-<lb />married may be married to his<lb />second wife in one state, the first<lb />oné in another state, and to nei-<lb />ther of them in a third. Such is<lb />the confusion when men depart<lb />from the law of God.<lb /><lb />Coercion is another impedi-<lb />ment. Some time ago the<lb />newspapers gave a lot of public-<lb />ity to the case of two men who<lb />traded daughters, eleven and<lb />sixteen, and married them. No<lb />person or minister with any sense<lb />of decency would be a party toa<lb />wedding of that kind, and any-<lb />body who knew the facts would<lb />be morally obligated to object.<lb />The opresence of disease, of a<lb />type which would be transmit-<lb />ted to children, or cause them to<lb />be born physically or mentally<lb />defective, would also constitute<lb /><lb />those in love, but sooner or<lb /><lb />hard times will come, andthere .<lb /><lb />isn Tt anything romantic about<lb />living on soup instead of beef<lb />steak; neither is anybody happy<lb />very long in a otumble down<lb />. shack in the West, in spite ofthe<lb /><lb />catchy tune of the song. When T<lb /><lb />faced with adversity, some<lb />women will walk out on a man;<lb />others, who took their vows se-<lb />riously, will stand by their<lb />husbands and encourage them.<lb /><lb />Marriage is more than a meal:<lb /><lb />ticket, and love which will not<lb />stand hardships is not very deep.<lb />Sooner or later sickness, also,<lb /><lb />is going to come, and these vows |<lb />may mean in some cases, years.<lb />of care. In other instances it may :<lb /><lb />mean the woman will have to<lb />support the family. In any case,<lb />it will call for self-denial, pa-<lb />tience, and love.<lb /><lb /> oAs long as we both shall<lb />live is one of the most sobering<lb />phrases of the promise. It means<lb />that at the end of the way there<lb />will be a flower-laden casket and<lb />an open grave - one of the two<lb />will have passed over into the<lb />great beyond. It is nothing short<lb />of an insult to God for people to<lb />take vows' like these, and then<lb /><lb />Everything looks to<lb /><lb />is a sponsor of the event at Black<lb />Rock on a beautiful site over-<lb />looking the Chowan River.<lb />are $12.50 and are avail-<lb />able from the Windsor Area<lb />Chamber of C , Post Of-<lb />fice Box572, Windsor, NC 27983.<lb />,.
