Autopsies of the other<lb />men showed they were drunk when<lb />they died.<lb /><lb />In Pitt County, such deaths<lb />are becoming more commonplace,<lb />as a county medical examiner<lb />noted recently, with drugs " es-<lb />pecially alcohol having a role in<lb />most unnatural deaths.<lb /><lb /> oMost vehicle-related deaths<lb />and more than halfofthe homicides<lb />and most of the large groups of<lb />violent deaths and suicides are<lb />also alcohol-related. ?<lb /><lb />Fie than _ fo the homi-<lb />cides and most o arge groups<lb />of violent deaths and ousidon are<lb /><lb />aC SS FATH | at Pollard<lb />WOOW Radio Station broadcast live with specials all day. Hudson said.<lb /><lb />Through years of toxicological<lb />studies of murder, suicide and<lb />accident victims statewide,<lb />Hudson said, medical examiners<lb />have detected a common thread of<lb />drug presence most notably alco-<lb />hol. Coroners collected autopsy<lb />data over a 10-year period and<lb />published the findings in a 1989<lb />report in the American Journal of<lb />Preventive Medicine.<lb /><lb />The report said that alcohol<lb />was present in 62.8 percent of<lb />murder victims in the state, in<lb />48.6 percent of accident victims<lb />and in 35.3 percent of suicide vic-<lb />tims. It noted alcohol being de-<lb />tected in 14.4 percent of natural<lb />death victims.<lb /><lb />Radio announcer, Jerry Barrett, far right, is shown posing with his<lb /><lb />father and two brothers. Father Barrett is a great supporter of JOY<lb /><lb /> " WOOW. He loves the gospel and his children.<lb /><lb />More than half of the murder<lb />victims had blood alcohol levels<lb />exceeding the legal limit of .10, the<lb />report said. And, 39.7 percent of<lb />accident victims and 26.6 percent<lb />of those who committed suicide<lb />were considered legally drunk.<lb />Only 8.2 percent of natural death<lb />victims were drunk.<lb /><lb />The report also found that al-<lb />cohol was a factor in most week-<lb />end and nighttime deaths, espe-<lb />cially in individuals who died<lb />betweeen 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. While<lb />alcohol-related deaths generally<lb />did not vary seasonally, the report<lb />noted that most murders and sui-<lb />cides occurred in the summer.<lb /><lb />In 1988, the state Department<lb />of Human Resources published a<lb />study of 200 house-fire deaths<lb />which showed that 112 victims "<lb />all ages 15 and older " were drunk<lb />when they died. Victims of cook-<lb />ing-related housefires were in-<lb />toxicated more often than other<lb />victims, the study said.<lb /><lb />In Pitt County, most traffic<lb />accidents " fatal or not " involve<lb />drunken drivers, according to lst<lb />Sgt. C.E. Pearce of the state<lb />Highway patrol.<lb /><lb /> oA lot of the wrecks are caused<lb />by alcohol. About 50 percent of the<lb /><lb />_ drivers are drinking and that has<lb /><lb />| heldtrue for several years, ? Pearce<lb />| said.<lb /><lb /> oT Tm sure that abuse (of other<lb />_ drugs) is on the increase, we're all<lb />aware of that. But, so far, we have<lb /><lb />traffic accidents related to that. ?<lb /><lb />Pearce, whose office also cov-<lb />ers Martin County, said the<lb /><lb />Highway Patrol is targeting<lb />; al bon telours, oOar ammbereen<lb /><lb />: = is to get drinking drivers<lb />the<lb /><lb />road and reduce fatalities. ?<lb />He said a new state law which<lb />became effective on Saturday<lb /><lb />lealanicns<lb /><lb />should deter drunken drivers. |<lb /><lb />| not seen a significant increase in "<lb /><lb />Under the new law, drivers of "<lb /><lb />commercial vehicles are considered<lb />ode heatebropberne arty<lb />level is .04, he said, noting that .10<lb />had been the legal limit, He said<lb />any vehicle that weighs at least<lb />26,001 pounds and transports<lb />people or property is conaldared<lb /><lb />commercial.<lb /><lb />Highway Patrol efforts tocurb<lb />drunken driving are paying off,<lb />according to Pearce. He said traf-<lb />fic fatalities have gone down in<lb />recent years and DWI arrests have<lb />gone up.<lb /><lb />The Greenville Police Depart-<lb />ment has recorded only three al-<lb />cohol-related fatalities in the past<lb />five years. Department records<lb />show 76 alcohol-related injuries in<lb />1985; 87 in 1986; 55 in 1987; 59 in<lb />1988 and 48 in 1990. Police say the<lb />most common alcohol-related<lb />crime locally is damage to property,<lb />noting that the city has averaged<lb />100 cases a year since 1985.<lb /><lb />Persons under the influence<lb />of alcohol or drugs may quickly<lb />become disoriented and find<lb />themselves in situations that are<lb />dangerous, even life-threatening,<lb />said Sandra Thomas, a local ad-<lb />dictions counselor.<lb /><lb /> oTheirresponsible use of drugs<lb />and alcohol leads to and results in<lb />irresponsible behavior because it<lb />disorients the brain and results in<lb />faulty or abberated thinking, ? said<lb /><lb />FOR :<lb /><lb />there is no reason for a woman or man to have a dirty car. But fami-<lb />lies are usually the only route to<lb />treatment because the impaired<lb />person is usually lost and difficult<lb />to reach, ? Ms. Thomas said.<lb /><lb /> oEducating the family is what<lb />gets people to treatment and it Ts<lb />just about the only thing that will<lb />work. ?<lb /><lb />She said families must first<lb />stop contributing to the problem<lb />by doing such things as giving<lb />money to a substance abuser when<lb />he has none; allowing the abuser<lb />to live at home despite knowledge<lb />ofa problem; ignoring the person Ts<lb />irresponsible behavior, and bail-<lb />ing out the person when he gets<lb />into trouble.<lb /><lb /> oThis is a family disease and<lb />the impaired person is only the<lb />symptom-bearer.<lb /><lb />N...In Washington, NC,<lb /><lb />outside of his Car Cleaning business is Brother Albritton. <p>+ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 - SEPTEMBER 13, 1999 " THE ~M T VOICE<lb /><lb />Pro-life perspective (continued from page 3)<lb /><lb />It all began in the fall of 1989<lb />when a group of five unions<lb />proposed to the ruling council of<lb />the AFL-CIO that it take a pro-<lb />abortion stand. Mr. Lane<lb />Kirkland appointed a committee<lb />of 18 people to study it and make<lb />a recommendation. There were<lb />only three who were pro-life on<lb />the committee.<lb /><lb />Mr. David Andrusko, editor of<lb />the National Right to Life News,<lb />designed a striking poster. It<lb />had a large picture of Lech<lb />Walesa, from Poland, and it<lb />simply said that if this resolution<lb />passes he couldn Tt belong to an<lb />American labor union "because<lb />Walesa is strongly against<lb />abortion.<lb /><lb />Early on, I obtained informa-<lb />tion that the main argument in<lb />union circles for passage was this.<lb />Union membership is declining.<lb />The percent of women in unions<lb />is increasing. Since all women<lb />favor abortion, therefore, if the<lb />unions is increasing. Since all<lb />women favor abortion, therefore,<lb />if the unions take a pro-abortion<lb />position, they will attract more<lb />women. End of Argument.<lb /><lb />I knew this was not so. More<lb />women oppose abortion than<lb />men. More blue collar people<lb />oppose abortion than white col-<lb /><lb />lar people. So we suggested a<lb />major poll to a national neutral<lb />pollster. Its results astonished<lb />the union leaders. It showed<lb />that 77 percent of members of<lb />union households felt that the<lb />AFL-CIO shouldn Tt take a posi-<lb />tion on abortion. Of those who<lb />feel it should have a position, 43<lb />percent said it should oppose<lb />abortion, while only 31 percent<lb />favored it.<lb /><lb />Better yet, polling of union me<lb />showed asmall majority opposed<lb />to abortion. But among union<lb />women, opposition to abortion<lb />ran at a better than 2-to-1 rate.<lb />Well, don Tt you worry. Through<lb />avariety of channels, every union<lb />local in the United States heard<lb /><lb />about that poll.<lb /><lb />Cardinal John O TConnor of<lb />New York, known to be very<lb />sympathetic to unions, wrote a<lb />strong statement which also re-<lb />ally shook the union leaders up.<lb />After reiterating his own strong<lb />union sympathies, the Cardinal<lb />pointed to a Supreme Court de-<lb />cision that would allow members<lb />of professional organizations and<lb />unions to withhold part of their<lb />dues in the event their union<lb />took a position on an issue that<lb />was offensive to the member.<lb /><lb />Leaders in the pro-life move-<lb /><lb />GARDNER'S BONDING CO.<lb /><lb />N<lb /><lb />.C. <lb />1981, and 1979, Mr. Helmsv<lb />against funding for handicapped<lb /><lb />education.<lb /><lb />Victimized by Liberals<lb /><lb />by Walter E. Williams<lb /><lb />The liberals, their fellow<lb />travelers in the conservationist<lb />and environmental movement,<lb />and a short-sighted, immoral<lb />Congress have messed up or<lb />country. The Middle East crisis<lb />is an early warning of things to<lb />come. Let's face it; we've put men,<lb />planes, ships, and tanks in the<lb />Middle ~East for one reason: to<lb />protect our access to oil. Anyone<lb />who says we're there to make the<lb />area safe fore democracy is<lb />whistlin T Dixie. The dominant<lb />feature of the Middle East is the<lb />contempt they hold for demo-<lb />cratic principles, human life, and<lb />liberty.<lb /><lb />Many people say we don Tt<lb />have ab energy policy, but that Ts<lb />not true. We have a policy, but it<lb />borders on insanity. Let Ts look at<lb />it. Point Arguello oil field, off the<lb />California coast, has been ready<lb />for two years and could add as<lb />much as 4.2 million gallons per<lb />day to our domestic oil supply. It<lb />could be on line injust six months.<lb />However, the California liberals,<lb />with the help of state officials,<lb />have shut it down.<lb /><lb />According to conservative<lb />estimates by the American Pe-<lb />troleum Institute: Accelerated<lb />leasing of the outer continental<lb />shelf oil fields could yield 32-<lb />million gallons/day; lease and<lb />development of the Arctic Na-<lb />tional Wildlife Range would yield<lb />20-million gallons/day; onshore<lb />Alaska leasing would yield 27-<lb />million gallons/dayjand onshore<lb />leasing in other states would<lb />yield about 5-million gallons/day.<lb />These facts lead me to the con-<lb />clusion that, if we have to land<lb />troops to insure access to oil,<lb />they would be better deployed in<lb />Washington.<lb /><lb />Several countries generate<lb />most of their electrical power<lb /><lb />from, nuclear energy. In France, «..<lb /><lb />nuclear plants generate 68 per-<lb />cent of their electricity.<lb />Americans invented nuclear en-<lb />ergy, yet it accounts for only 18<lb />percent of our electrical power.<lb />It takes us more than 10 years to<lb />build a nuclear power plant be-<lb />cause of costly litigation and<lb />regulation. InJapan and France,<lb />the process start-to-finish is<lb />slightly over six years. Moreover,<lb />theirs are built at approximately<lb />half of what it costs us. You say,<lb /> oOh, that Ts because their plants<lb /><lb />_ are less safe. ? Nonsense, French<lb /><lb />plants are built to U.S. specifi-<lb /><lb />| cations under license from<lb />_ Westinghouse,<lb /><lb />Liberals demonstrating all<lb />over the country have hamstrung<lb />our nuclear powerindustry. With<lb />media complicity, ir Bove<lb />nuclear energy is unsafe, but they<lb />can Tt point to asingle U.S. citizen<lb /><lb />| who has died as a result. Doing<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />the bidding of the environmen-<lb />tal crowd, Congress sabotages<lb /><lb />our nuclear development, Asa °<lb /><lb />result scores of people die each<lb /><lb />ear from coal mine accidents,<lb />black lung disease, and air pol-<lb />aan from power generation by<lb />coal, -<lb /><lb />Americans may be able to<lb />weather the high prices of oil<lb />but the real li l-generated<lb />disaster is in the not-too-distant<lb />future. Several Third-World<lb /><lb />countries, including Iraq, are<lb />developing intercontinental .<lb />missiles.If Iraq had those mis- "<lb />siles now, Saddan Hussein might<lb /><lb />very well target New York,<lb />Washington, or Los Angeles in<lb />response to any U.S.<lb /><lb />action against him. Sure we<lb /><lb />JOHJEM 18189)<lb /><lb />wipe him off the face of the earth,<lb />but possibly millions of Ameri-<lb />cans would have died from lethal<lb /><lb />chemical or biological "_. :<lb />evelop-<lb /><lb />_ Deployment and<lb /><lb />ment of a strategic defense<lb />system would enable us to ad-<lb />dress that threat, not to mention<lb />the threat of an accidental or<lb />ethnic terrorist launch from the<lb />Soviet Union. But the liberals in<lb />and out of Congress have gutted<lb />the program. They see tax dollars<lb />used for handouts as a better<lb /><lb />to current members who bring a<lb />guest.
