You may have learned so far<lb />in life that friends will let you<lb />down, and they will also stop<lb />coming around. Friends are hard<lb />to find, friend like yours and<lb />mine.<lb /><lb />About a year ago I thought that<lb />I had some new friends. Friends<lb />that would stand by me and be<lb />supportive of me. Then one day<lb />I realized that the door bell had<lb />stopped ringing and the telephone<lb />had stopped ringing.<lb /><lb />These so-called friends were<lb />people that I had not sent for, and<lb />I didn Tt even know that they ex-<lb />isted. They found me. And now I<lb />know that they really only<lb />wanted to get close to me because<lb />there was something going on at<lb />the time that they could probably<lb />benefit from.<lb /><lb />My experience got me thinking<lb />back to Jesus and His disciples.<lb />Jesus had a huge crowd behind<lb />Him all the time as long as they<lb />were benefiting and Jesus was<lb />giving out blessings. But when<lb />Jesus needed them, you could<lb />hardly find one.<lb /><lb />Well, in a way it kind of hap-<lb />pended to me. I started out with<lb />a small crowd of about 30. Now<lb />there Ts only a few: God, me, my<lb />family, and two others. But know<lb />what? That Ts all it takes.<lb /><lb />So I'm glad that the crowd has<lb />dwindled since their intention<lb />were not good to begin with.<lb />Because had their intentions been<lb />good, I would still hear from<lb />them, and they would still be<lb />coming around or calling from<lb />time to time,<lb /><lb />But I want these so-called<lb />friends to remember that what<lb />goes around comes around.<lb /><lb />You've probably noticed that<lb />when one white person or family<lb />needs help, they all join together<lb />to help this person or family. For<lb />example, think about how all the<lb />whites got together and had bake<lb /><lb />sales and everything else you can<lb />think of to help the Ron Chance<lb /><lb />Family. Would we as a black<lb />race had taken time out to do this<lb />if the Chance Family had been<lb />black?<lb /><lb />Jesus chose no special person<lb />or family to help while He walk-<lb />ed around here on earth. You<lb />don Tt have to be a star to be in<lb />God Ts show. Because God uses<lb />ordinary people. He used or-<lb />dinary people in biblical days and<lb />uses them today. But we as a<lb />black race, we have our picks as<lb />to whom we help. How would you<lb />feel if you asked God for help and<lb />He told you that He wasn Tt going<lb />to help you. That He had chosen<lb />someone else instead? I doubt<lb />very seriously if it would make<lb />you feel good.<lb /><lb />We as a black race had better<lb />start thinking about pulling<lb />together while we Tre sitting<lb />across that table eating lunch<lb /><lb />with our white fellow co-workers<lb /><lb />everyday. Because when you get<lb />up from that table you are still<lb /><lb />just as black as you were when<lb /><lb />you first sat down. You didn Tt<lb /><lb />change one iota to that white man<lb />or white woman. They don Tt love<lb />us; they just put up with us,<lb />hecause one man dared to make<lb />a change when some of us were<lb />still in diapers.<lb /><lb />Your so-called friends will tell<lb />you so faithfully what they are<lb />going to do or what they are go-<lb />ing to say until it really comes<lb />down to the main event. Then you<lb /><lb />start to get answers such as<lb /> ~ ~maybe T T, ~ o ~I don Tt know T T,<lb /> ~check with me later T T, ~ ~we Tll<lb />see T, and finally, ~ ~I don Tt want to<lb />make it hard for myself T.<lb /><lb />Then you start to wonder why<lb />did they lead you on. Our so-<lb />called black friends are so en-<lb />vious. They Tre so afraid that<lb />you Tre going to get ahead of<lb />them. But they need to<lb />remember that ENVY shoots at<lb />others and wounds herself in the<lb />process.<lb /><lb />I was told a story not too long<lb />ago about a group of girls who<lb />were attending a class together.<lb />Everyone was car pooling<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 3)<lb /><lb />FINE CANDIDATES ... <lb />~ Class children<lb /><lb />by E. Kent Hayes<lb /><lb />Over the past ten years the<lb />number of middle and upper<lb />turning to<lb />delinquents "even criminal<lb />behavior has risen dramatically.<lb />Children who seem to have every<lb />advantage are ending up in court,<lb />and their parents are often at a<lb />loss to explain how this come<lb />about.<lb /><lb />Too often parents neglect is the<lb />root of the trouble. The same<lb />parents who coach the Little<lb />League teams, preside at the<lb />PTA may be neglecting some of<lb />their children Ts needs, without<lb />even being aware of it. Neglect<lb />can take the many form, from<lb />overindulgence to lack of<lb />communication.<lb /><lb />Good parenting is not a natural<lb />process but a learned process.<lb />Good parents know how to instill<lb />the value of delayed gratification,<lb />provide structure, get to know<lb />their child by becoming actively<lb /><lb />u Y, NOVEMBER 2-WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1989-THE ~M T VOICE<lb /><lb />involved in his or her interests,<lb />work hard to communicate with<lb />their children, learn .the<lb />dynamics of discipline, focus on<lb />negative behavior and ignore<lb />positive create within their child<lb />a poor. self-image, like<lb />themselves and know how to<lb />laugh, successful kids come first<lb />from*nurturing homes, a child Ts<lb />first and most important<lb />teachers are his parents, teach<lb />their children that there is joy in<lb />being part of a larger communi-<lb />ty, who learn the facts about<lb />alcohol and drug addiction are<lb />their child Ts greatest allies<lb />against the danger of substance<lb />abuse, and husbands and wives<lb />who do not love each other pro-<lb />duce disturbed kids.<lb /><lb />Criminals are formed by their<lb />environment. Good people can be bad<lb />parents. Being a good parent re-<lb />quires as much time, talent,<lb /> " , and thought as a full-time<lb />job.<lb /><lb />When we have problems at<lb />work, we call everyone together,<lb />sit down around a table, and<lb />discuss the issue. We do not do<lb />this with our families. The pro-<lb />blem simply fester. Being a<lb />parent requires as much active<lb />management, thought, and con-<lb />sideration as his job. We give our<lb />job more time and thought than<lb />our families. What were you like<lb />when you were seventeen? If a<lb />mother is tired and stressed<lb />(after a career job), the entire<lb />family is affected. Many of us are<lb />muddling along wondering why<lb />our house doesn Tt feel like a<lb />home. As parents, we tell our<lb />children how we want them to<lb />behave by what we say and don Tt<lb />say. Bill and Pam had a two-<lb />career marriage with no energy<lb />left over for parenting. April<lb />described her mother coming<lb />home from school tired and<lb />angry. Her father would come in,<lb />pick up the paper, and wait for<lb />April to call him to dinner. No one<lb />talked and when the kids tried to<lb />tell their concerns the parents<lb />said they were tired. When April<lb />became pregnant at 13 years old,<lb />Pam and Bill were totally un-<lb />prepared to deal with it. Set aside<lb />time for families to talk, family<lb />talk. Parents must interact with<lb />school. Know that your family is<lb />important enough before they Tve<lb /><lb />flexible and imaginative whe<lb />solving family problems as y<lb />are when solving problems on<lb />job.<lb /><lb />Our problems of behavior are<lb />established while we Tre young.<lb />The child and the problem came "<lb />from us. We rob our children of |<lb />\a neéded relationship and send<lb />them off into a competitive, com-<lb />plicated world believing that love |<lb />is wrapped in packages or car- |<lb />ried in a billfold. Assume your |<lb /><lb />role as parents, not nannies, baby "<lb /><lb />sitters. By giving you child<lb />everything she wants, when she<lb />wants it, you deskill your<lb />daughter and son.<lb /><lb />Our care of the child from birth<lb />to six provides the emotional<lb />foundation that will affect his<lb />behavior throughout his life. If we<lb />turn up our noses and call his<lb />body waste dirty while we are<lb />potty training, the chances are<lb />pretty good the chilld will feel he<lb />is dirty.<lb /><lb />It is during this period that<lb />children can learn to appreciate<lb />books and perceive learning as<lb />an adventure. They do not need<lb />to be pushed into reading, or<lb />counting, but if we read to them<lb />with enthusiasm, and talk to<lb />them with a healthy respect for<lb />their intellect, they will live up to<lb />their intellectual capacity.<lb /><lb />Teach affection by being affec-<lb />tionate with our spouses, the<lb />child Ts siblings, and the child. Children<lb />learn about sex and their bodies<lb />from us. If we turn our noses up<lb />and look disgusted at the question<lb />about the penis or vagina, they<lb />understand immediately how we<lb />feel. By then whatever words we<lb />choose are virtually meaningless.<lb />They will ask questions and be<lb />curious. For the better part of<lb />two years we cover their bodies<lb />with diapers, and when finally<lb />they have a chance to explore and<lb />discover these strange organs,<lb />they will be fascinated and<lb />excited.<lb /><lb />Ask yourself "What do I want<lb />my children.to know before they<lb />leave home? Educational needs<lb />and physical/medical/dental<lb />needs, surely. Children must be<lb />taught through social interaction<lb />that they are a part of a larger<lb />community is their responsibili-<lb />ty. They learn how to be sociable<lb />by watching their parents<lb />socialize. Our children are im-<lb />itators. The chances are good<lb />that they will associate with the<lb />same type of people we associate<lb />with. Become an active part of<lb />the community in which you live.<lb />Children learn from what they<lb />see, not what they hear. If they<lb />see a parent who can only relax<lb />with a drink in his or her hand,<lb />what does it say? Parents need to<lb />analyze their own consumption<lb />habits. As a society, we need to<lb />think about the example we set,<lb />and the images we create.<lb /><lb />Parents need to assume the<lb />responsibility of being their<lb />child Ts drug educator. Even six-<lb />year-olds need to be talked to.<lb />But how do you talk to a six-year-<lb />old about addiction? When he Ts<lb />two years old and reaches under<lb />the sink and pulls out the drain<lb />cleaner, we don Tt hesitate to tell<lb />him that the liquid in the bottle is<lb />a poison and could make him<lb />very sick. ~Tell him addictive<lb />drugs can also make him very<lb />sick, that they are poison to the<lb />system, Walking across the<lb />street without looking both ways<lb />is dangerous. If you get hit by a<lb />car, it could kill you. Don Tt be<lb />afraid to discuss harmful effects<lb />of illegal drugs with your<lb />children. If you see an article in<lb />the paper related to addiction<lb />that can be explained, bring it to<lb />the dinner table and talk about it.<lb /><lb />Parents who provide a nurtur-<lb />ing, structured environment and<lb />communicate with their T child<lb />have the best chance of dealing<lb />with substance abuse. Husbands<lb />and wives who do not love each<lb />other produce disturbed kids.<lb />When affection, respect and love<lb />are present in a marriage, the<lb />children are secure and happy<lb />with each other. Children whe<lb />feel secure seldom commit<lb />crimes or need to abuse others to<lb />meet their needs. We all need a<lb />time and place to vent our wrath,<lb />but the best place is not in front<lb />of the kids. There Ts a big dif-<lb />ference between an argument<lb />and a fight. Members<lb />and guests may now enjoy their<lb />favorite beverage without fear of<lb />problems with law enforcement<lb />authorities.<lb /><lb />Now is a perfect time for Afro-<lb />Americans to support the<lb />brotherhood social club and com-<lb />munity building. Doctof<lb /><lb />This week Ts column is a<lb />message to children in the many<lb />families in our community.<lb />Although this column has: been<lb />primarily an aid and an appeal to<lb />parents, it Ts the children Ts turn<lb />this week.<lb /><lb />Have you ever had a pfoblem<lb />that you were afraid to discuss<lb />with your parents? Perhaps this<lb />feeling was based on fear of<lb />punishment, loss of affection, or<lb />loss of respect from your parents.<lb />Some of the roles of childhood<lb />and of being in a family are to<lb />learn to accept disciple, to obey,<lb />and to make the necessary<lb />changes in your behavior.<lb />Therefore the fear of punishment<lb />from your parents is a legitimate<lb />one. It is a parent Ts responsibili-<lb />ty to punish for improper<lb />behavior. Punishment is general-<lb />ly much more severe if parents<lb />learn from outsiders (teacher,<lb />neighbor, police, etc.) things that<lb />you should have trusted them<lb />enough to tell them.<lb /><lb />Consider for the moment the<lb />types of punishments that exist<lb />today. Compare these<lb />punishements to those of your<lb />parents. Police or legal punish-<lb />ment may be harsh. School-<lb />teachers and _principals-<lb />punishments, may be imper-<lb />sonal. Such impersonal! discipline<lb />can lower self esteem. Outside<lb />authorities usually are much<lb />more severe and restrictive in<lb />their punishment and discipline<lb />than are parents. Parents disci-<lb />ple and counsel with love and<lb />understanding. Regardless of<lb />your feelings today, as an adult,<lb />you'll look back at some of your<lb />life experiences and give your<lb />parents the praise!<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 14)<lb /><lb /></p>

In addition you<lb />also accept the living guidance<lb />Muhammad left for us to follow.<lb /><lb />In the life of prophet Muham-<lb />mad you have clear examples on<lb />how to conduct yourselves and<lb />your affairs. Islam encompasses<lb />all aspects of life including<lb />government, private and per-<lb />sonal affairs such as education,<lb />marriage, finance and. dress.<lb />Muhammad shows you that<lb />God Ts words is compatible with<lb />everyday life. As each verse was<lb />revealed, it was immediately ex-<lb />panded in his lifestyle. The state<lb />he established and the laws that<lb />were enforced came from Quran.<lb />By following Quran he proved<lb />that there Ts no poverty, hunger?<lb />prejudice, or ignorance, in a God<lb />fearing state.<lb /><lb />Society should strive to live in<lb />accordance to God Ts laws and not<lb />outside of them. As a human be-<lb />ing you prefer your way of doing<lb />things. You may not, like being<lb />told how to live your life. The<lb />Quran teaches that God did not<lb />create anything in vain, nor did<lb />He create for sport and play.<lb />Everything you do on earth will<lb />either bring you closer to God or<lb />take you further away.<lb /><lb />Muhammad instructs you to<lb />think about structuring your life<lb />in a way that is pleasing to God.<lb />This doesn Tt mean living in<lb />poverty or denying yourself the<lb />benefits of the world. On the con-<lb />trary, it means building a socie-<lb />ty that considers not just your<lb />physical needs, but also your<lb />spiritual ones. In our society we<lb />have a democracy based on<lb />separation of church and state,<lb />We are free to worship as we<lb />please, but when it comes to cor-<lb />ruption we have no spiritual leg<lb />to stand on. Our laws are not God<lb />conscious, It is difficult to change<lb />unjust laws, or enforce laws that<lb />protect the environment and the<lb />innocent from the greedy.<lb />Sometimes our laws take away<lb />from us something basic and<lb />Godlike, for example, congrega-<lb />tional prayers in our public<lb />schools. So far removed are we<lb />from doing'what is Godlike in our<lb />laws that a question like abortion<lb />becomes a painful ordeal. A god-<lb />fearing government is nothing to<lb />fear, if you have a clear guidance<lb />and a clear: example to follow.<lb />Islam gives you both. The Quran,<lb />which gives you God Ts eternal<lb />guidance, prophet Muham-<lb />mad, who shows you how to<lb />structure your life with it.<lb /><lb />You didn Tt have a clear<lb />guidance to follow before Islam.<lb />No prophet before Muhammad<lb />b t a strong founda-<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />Rn EAE D OE AAA AEE EEA REAEELA TEED DEEL LAL ERD DEAD DED<lb /><lb /></p>

There is on-<lb />ly one possible science, Univeral<lb />Law the science of human socie-<lb />ty, of humans in the process of<lb />self, social and world construc-<lb />tion. With that<lb />thought in mind, Black Studies,<lb />then, becomes important because<lb />it is a study of a particular peo-<lb />ple which aids in the study of<lb />humanity as a whole.<lb /><lb />Black Studies is an important<lb />contribution to humanity Ts self-<lb />understanding, because Blacks,<lb />African people, are the fathers<lb />and mothers of both humanity<lb />and human civilization.
