There is a dire need to<lb />correct some long standing pro-<lb />blems which have been neglected<lb />in the minority and low income<lb />neighborhoods. These problems<lb />are a threat to the life and proper-<lb />ty of all Plymouth citizens. Why<lb />haven Tt these mounting problems<lb />been solved? Is there no more<lb />respect for life nor property?<lb />There are solutions to these pro-<lb />blems, but the solution to these<lb />problems appears to be the kill-<lb />ing and jailing of the victims.<lb /><lb />We need representatives like,<lb />Wilkins, Cordon, Boone, Thomas<lb />and Purnell who will stand up and<lb />demand programs, which will<lb />help to heal our drug and violent<lb />infested community. We need<lb />programs which will allow all<lb />youth to intermingle, thus giving<lb />them better human relations. We<lb />need more jobs and a more equal<lb />distribution of wealth. (MOST OF<lb />THE RICH ARE DOING THE<lb />CRIME AND THE POOR ARE<lb />GETTING THE TIME.) If the<lb />minority and low income com-<lb />munity would see their common<lb />plight, then we can put an end,<lb /><lb />owned a majority of Downtown<lb />Plymouth and.made major con-<lb />tributions to the greatness of this<lb />city. History Ts voice yet echoes<lb />and challenges us to write a new<lb />chapter by electing our coun-<lb />cilpersons and our Bro-Minister<lb />Robert L. Wilkins as our Mayor.<lb /><lb />With your support, history will<lb />always tell of the citizen of<lb />Plymouth, who had a sense of the<lb />past and present, and who dared<lb />to step in the future.<lb /><lb />On November 7th we shall<lb />leave a monument for all future<lb />generations to look upon with<lb />divine pride. To be successful in<lb />our efforts to elect Melvin Cor-<lb />don, John Boone, Carolyn<lb />Thomas, Louis Purnell as coun-<lb />cilpersons and Minister R. It does take ongoing plann- "<lb />ing and perseverance, but the ©<lb /><lb />rewards are worth your time and<lb />effort. T<lb /><lb />The secret to success is to<lb />believe homework is necessary to<lb />reinforce your child Ts<lb />schoolwork, and treat it accor-<lb /><lb />dingly. Making homework a.<lb /><lb />family commitment can help<lb />your child develop lifelong study<lb />skills, self-discipline, and in-<lb />dependence. Conversely, if you<lb />think homework is a waste of<lb />time, so will your child. Here are<lb />some tips:<lb /><lb />Start early.The preschooler is<lb />prepared for future homework<lb />when you establish a brief daily<lb /> oquiet time T T for stories. Continue<lb />this. pleasant routine through<lb />kindergarten and first grade with<lb />a half hour for reading or board<lb />games. When homework is even-<lb />tually assigned, your child will<lb /><lb />expect and welcome daily study<lb />time.<lb /><lb />Be consistent. Doing<lb />homework should become as in-<lb /><lb />evitable as suprise! Agree upon<lb />homework rules at the beginning<lb />of each school year, and make<lb />sure they are faithfully followed.<lb />Kids who have the homework<lb />habit will adapt as assignments<lb />become more arduous in upper<lb />grades.<lb /><lb />Plan. Try a calendar or chart<lb />that allows children to block in a<lb />regular schedule and learn to<lb />balance homework, play, and<lb />chores. Students in the early<lb />years should budget a half hour<lb />for homework while middle<lb />schoolers may need as much as<lb />two hours to complete<lb /><lb />P.O. Children need ample free<lb /><lb />time after school before starting<lb />homework, and also need to go to<lb />bed on time.<lb /><lb />Cooperate. Your youngster will<lb />study more willingly if he or she<lb />helps make the rules. Com-<lb />promise can work wonders. For<lb />example, if you choose to permit<lb />listening to music but cut out<lb />phone calls, you answer the<lb />phone during the homework<lb />period and take messages. So<lb />long as the student is doing well,<lb />allow him or her to choose the<lb />most comfortable place to<lb />study "the kitchen table, the<lb />bedroom desk, the living room<lb />floor, or wherever!<lb /><lb />More than one? If you have<lb />several children, experiment to<lb />determine if the children do best<lb />studying together or in separate<lb />areas. Each may have a different<lb />schedule, with rules varying ac-<lb />cording to age. For example,<lb />your middle school student may<lb />benefit from studying with a<lb />friend at the friend Ts home or at<lb />the library. Expect some socializ-<lb />ing also, but make sure your child<lb />accomplishes the tasks.<lb /><lb />Individual needs count. Each<lb />child needs a homework routine<lb />that fits individual age, health,<lb />temperament, and study skills<lb />and weaknesses. Homework may<lb />be a struggle for one child, a<lb />breeze for another. The slightest<lb />distraction may hamper some<lb />kids while others could study in<lb />a stadium. You may have to help<lb />one child more than another, but<lb />please: never berate a child mak-<lb />ing unfavorable comparisons to<lb />another child.<lb /><lb />Let your child do _ the<lb />homework. That Ts the only way a<lb />child will learn! But do help your<lb /><lb />youngster organize study time.<lb /><lb />(Continued on page 3)<lb /><lb />ag ae<lb /><lb />oh, ae<lb /><lb />fe ip page<lb /><lb />i yy i, eae Rs neg<lb />ee a eae we<lb /><lb />Ses<lb />ag grace ti Sto Me<lb /><lb />Bing eg Se es<lb /><lb />es<lb /><lb />ae<lb /></p>

Opening Remarks - I feel it<lb />would be a pleasure, a joy and an<lb />honor to represent others in the<lb /><lb /> ofamily moved to Greenville in Shan vadacniel nts, te A aNnk<lb /><lb />and b<lb />their place. With<lb />problems in other areas such a<lb />zoning, traffic flow, and signage.<lb />The list goes on and on.We need<lb />good council members to project<lb />five, ten, fifteen years into the<lb />future to best cope with these situ-<lb />ations.<lb /><lb />3. Thoroughfare Planning -<lb />Thoroughfare Planningis crucial<lb />to our growth. In my hometown<lb />of Wilmington, N.C., it is almost<lb />like driving in New York City.<lb />Greenville does not have a good<lb />passage running from one side of<lb />town to another without twisting<lb />and turning to get there. Ina city<lb />with a university, a community<lb />college and a health service cen-<lb />ter so geographically close, we<lb />have an increased chance of un-<lb />necessary wrecks because of the<lb />heavy traffic flow on certain<lb />streets. <lb />campaign<lb /><lb />mayoral hopeful Rudolph<lb />Giuliani took a giant step back-<lb />wards last week, following<lb />motor mouthing, racially charg-<lb />ed comments from his honorary<lb />campaign chairman, the less<lb />than funny comedian Jackie<lb />Mason.<lb /><lb />Mason, a Giuliani sidekick<lb />since the former U.S. attorney<lb />announced his candidacy, in an<lb />interview with a local reporter<lb />demonstrated clearly the course<lb />the campaign has taken since<lb />media consultant Roger Ailes<lb />(of George Bush/Willie Horton<lb />infamy) came aboard. Deriding<lb />Rev. Jews are of-<lb />fended by Jackson, who has<lb />never disavowed Farrakhan, a<lb />Black Nazi. <lb /><lb />According to Mason, who<lb />aligned himself with Meir<lb />Kahane and his wishes to see all<lb />Arabs expelled from Israel,<lb />Dinkins is a do nothing politi-<lb />cian.<lb /><lb /> oYou don Tt need a guy like<lb />Dinkins, who spends his whole<lb />life putting on shirts and jack-<lb />ets and parting his hair, T T the<lb />Jewish ~ ~comic T T said. oDinkins<lb />looks like a Black model with-<lb />out a job. Giuliani has ac-<lb />complished more in one day of<lb />his life than Dinkins has in his<lb />whole lifetime, Dinkins is a<lb />great role model for people who<lb />want to prove that at the age of<lb />62 you can still be tall. <lb /><lb /> oIt is simply racism in its<lb />most crude and barbaric form<lb />and is similar to the racist pro-<lb />paganda uttered by Goebbels<lb /><lb />Mayoral candidate Rudolph (<lb />Mason.<lb /><lb />against Jews in Germany in the<lb />1930s, stated Activist Attor-<lb />ney Colin Moore. ~ ~By extreme<lb />irony of history, the comedian<lb />has becbme the Goebbels of<lb />New York City. <lb /><lb />Mason, an ordained rabbi who<lb />grew up on the lower East Side,<lb />stated the Jewish vote is cru-<lb />cial.<lb /><lb /> oIf Dinkins wins, the major<lb />reason will be because he got a<lb />reasonable percentage of the<lb />Jewish vote, T Mason said. ~The<lb />Jews are constantly giving mil-<lb />lions of dollars to the Black peo-<lb />ple. Have you ever heard of a<lb />Black person giving a quarter to<lb />a Jew? I Tm not saying Blacks<lb />should be giving to the Jews,<lb />but Jews don Tt owe anything to<lb />Blacks, adding ~If Dinkins<lb />was white and you put his track<lb />record against Giuliani's track<lb />record, he wouldn Tt get a single<lb />Jewish vote. <lb /><lb />tiuliani and his sidekick Jackie<lb /><lb />David Fishlow, Dinkins T<lb />spokesman said he was dis-<lb />gusted by Mason Ts remarks and<lb />believed that fair minded people<lb />wouldn Tt think they represent<lb />the attitude of the City Ts Jewish<lb />community, but rather<lb />Mason Ts. .<lb /><lb /> oThis is most unfortunate,<lb />and it is not a matter to joke<lb />about, T Rev. Most of<lb />the people I know believe in this<lb />rather passive interpretation and,<lb />asa result, we have come to ex-<lb />pect civil rights fighters to simply<lb />absorb the blows and insults of<lb />their enemies.<lb /><lb />Could, perhaps, a more accurate<lb />(andrefined) meaning be toact by<lb />complying, obeying, upholding,<lb />respecting, honoring and cherish-<lb />ing.<lb /><lb />These two ways of looking at the<lb /><lb />' ~Tony Brown's<lb /><lb />Or Se<lb /><lb />a<lb />es e<lb />iw CS<lb /><lb />_S<lb /><lb />eNATIONALLY SYNDICATED COLUMNe<lb /><lb />concept of nonviolence are by no<lb />means exclusive; there is very<lb />little distinction in the intention.<lb />But action does distinguish itself<lb />from passivity, in that it demands<lb />overt behavior.<lb /><lb />I started thinking about nonvi-<lb />olence when I read a recent cover<lb />story by Juan Williams on Coretta<lb />King in The Washington Post<lb />Magazine. Much of the story was<lb />devoted to her critics, who were<lb />very violent in their assessment of<lb />Martin Luther King Ts widow.<lb /><lb />Two of these critics were White<lb />men who have written books on<lb />Martin Luther King and rode to<lb />literary fame on the back of a<lb />movement from which they were<lb />detached. Others were subalterns<lb />of Dr. King, men who have paid<lb />their dues, but have different vi-<lb />sions of how his legacy can be<lb />applied to resolving today Ts pov-<lb />erty.<lb /><lb />Mrs. King Ts vision of her hus-<lb />band Ts legacy is closer to,<lb /><lb />literally, her heart. It is also<lb />shaped by her concern for her<lb />children and the resentment she<lb />feels about not being recognized<lb />for her own ability to contribute.<lb />She must be credited with, almost<lb />single handedly, transforming<lb />MLK Ts image into an American<lb />legend.<lb /><lb />The King Center in Atlanta, for<lb />which Mrs. King has raised $10<lb />million in 14 years, is the bricks<lb />and mortar of this legend. Anditis<lb />here that MLK Ts life-meaning has<lb />been defined as nonviolence. Mrs.<lb />King even calls the King Center<lb /> ~ ~the West Point of nonviolence. <lb /><lb />The Post story said that ~ ~she<lb />expects to train a new generation<lb />of leadership, an army of 10,000<lb />within 10 years, schooled in her<lb />husband Ts philosophy of bringing<lb />about social change. T<lb /><lb />av<lb />make. But the fact of business is:<lb /><lb />Hard decisions must be made, and<lb />we hope the people in charge have<lb />the guts to make them.<lb /><lb />A considerable part of the cur-<lb />rent hostage debate is over what<lb />we can do to save the hostages. I<lb />sympathize with that sentiment<lb />and my heart goes out to the hos-<lb />tages and their families. But I<lb />ask: How much of our response<lb />should be dictated by concern for<lb />the safety of the hostages?<lb /><lb />Before coming to grips with that<lb />question, let Ts look at other situ-<lb />ations involving lives. Suppose a<lb />submarine commander were<lb />steaming to rescue some downed<lb />airmen, and his radarman in-<lb />formed him of a squadron of in-<lb />coming enemy aircraft, would we<lb />expect him to abandon the air-<lb />men in order to protect his ship<lb />and his men? Or would we expect<lb />him to risk all in an effort to save<lb />American lives?<lb /><lb />During World War II, when the<lb />Allied Command ordered satura-<lb />tion bombing of Frankfurt, Ber-<lb />lin, and Munich, would you have<lb />scrubbed the mission upon receiv-<lb />ing intelligence that Allied pris-<lb />oners of war were being held in<lb />those cities? Hitler would have<lb />loved to have hada U.S.president<lb />around at that time who consid-<lb />ered those lives overly precious<lb />and called off the bombing.<lb /><lb />Middle East disputes, Israel Ts<lb />role in them, and our own bun-<lb />gling foreign policy are not the<lb />main issues in the current crisis.<lb />What is at issue are the basic<lb />principles of international con-<lb />duct governing the ways that<lb />nations negotiate and settle their<lb />differences.<lb /><lb />The focal point of any discussion<lb />of our response should be:<lb /><lb />What are the best steps to take to<lb />reduce the chances of future ter-<lb />rorism? The Bush administra-<lb />tion should make it plain that<lb />taking hostages, blowing up civil-<lb />ian airliners, and committing<lb />other acts of international terror-<lb />ism are not profitable.<lb /><lb />You don Tt convince terrorists of<lb />this by congressional resolution<lb />condemning terrorism. T T On<lb />January 5, 1988, the C-span Net-<lb />work carried a television report<lb />from Nader and his scientific<lb />support group on a new subject:<lb />chlorinated water.<lb /><lb />During the course of the<lb />presentation, Nader himself<lb />made comments concerning the<lb />chlorination of water and the lack<lb />of information brought to the<lb />public concerning possible side<lb />effects.<lb /><lb />Nader Ts scientific represen-<lb />tative took the podium to further<lb />_ discuss the potential dangers of<lb />chlorination and to offer<lb />possibilities for a solution. His<lb />answer of course encompassed a<lb />major effort by the government<lb />to generally improve the quality<lb />of American drinking water.<lb /><lb />When pressed by a reporter in<lb />attendance as to what an in-<lb />dividual can do NOW, he<lb />answered, and demonstrated<lb />Granular Activated Carbon<lb />Filtration. He further<lb />demonstrated the loose carbon<lb />can be used for a low-cost, low-<lb />volume situation, but also cited<lb />several commercial units being<lb />produced. He warned against<lb />units with too little carbon to be<lb />effective, and units which aren Tt<lb />bacteriostatic.<lb /><lb />THE PRESENTATION IS<lb />AVAILABLE THROUGH C-<lb />SPAN.
